Mary pours you a cup of hot tea, which you drink in one gulp. She immediately pours you a second cup so that you can actually enjoy the taste - if it's synthetic tea, the quality is surprisingly good - and puts away her own paperwork for the day.

"The modules we built have met our expectations, so we'll keep going with the basic design," Mary says. "Our big problem right now is time."

You haven't been spending much time in the main base lately, what with the R&D and the sorties, but you know what she means. You can't quite put your finger on it, but you can feel something's off. It hasn't been officially confirmed yet, but everyone knows an attack on Lyon is in the works. Everyone at the base knows it has to be done, but everyone also knows that the last attack on Lyon went sideways.

Mary leads you down to the engineering labs, where the staff are busy disassembling and reassembling the modules you've already designed. They do work, but they also need to be perfectly interchangeable, and that's quite a bit more complicated, especially since you haven't finished all the modules yet. You need to know what works, but you can't afford to be stuck with a preset model either. It's a delicate balancing act.

You look at the current reloading systems. They're not that complicated, and some of them are designed to be installed on TSFs already for obvious reasons, but they weren't designed to allow one TSF to reload another's assault cannons. Then you need to account for the fact that while weapons are mostly standardized, they aren't fully standardized on a global scale, and there are still some differences between assault cannons of different models.

Fortunately, you don't need to reload every gun in the world, just every gun in Europe. That's a lot easier. After all, European logistics are limited to understate things.

You're satisfied that the design you and Mary came up with will work. It won't be particularly elegant, but a battlefield is not a fashion show. It won't be practical to reload a gun right in the middle of a battle either, but that's to be expected.

"Yeah, I think this will do," you say.

"I'll have a proof of concept constructed and we'll move on from there," Mary says. "The basic design will work, and we might be able to refine it once we have a physical model to work with."

The two of you walk back to the barracks. It's that annoying part of winter when everything should be getting warmer, but the cold comes back seemingly at random. It's a good thing that the weather around Dover is relatively mild. Regular blizzards and snowstorms wouldn't do you or your TSF any favours.

You and Mary grab a tray of synthetic food. It looks bland, but "bland" actually counts as praise when it comes to food, especially in winter. You easily spot Elaine and Vivian, who are busy chatting at a table by one of the windows.

"Hello, ladies," you say as you sit down. Mary takes the seat next to you.

"Hello, Julian," Elaine says. "How's engineering treating you."

"Oh, splendidly." You take a bite of something off your plate. Yeah, it's bland all right. "It's amazing how many problems just go away when you're apathetic enough."

"I wish that worked for me," Vivian says. "Which reminds me, I need to consult you on a technical matter later."

"Not a problem, I'll be at the research hangar," you say. "Anything specific you'd like to know?"

"It has to do with the devices you built in Italy," Vivian says. "I'm afraid I can't say more right now. I still need some paperwork to get through."

Once your meal is finished, you accompany Mary back to her research hangar for another round of R&D.

You decide to replace the TSF's hand with what essentially amounts to a large work table. Powerful electromagnets can hold armour plates and spare parts in place in order for repairs to take place and it's a simple matter to add welding arms and electric screwdrivers. It should be sturdy enough for normal emergency repairs, but it'll be fragile during combat. A stray Tank would be more than enough to wreck the entire repair platform.

Of course, if the Sangreal ends up in combat, it's screwed anyway.

"I like it," Mary says. "It's not practical for combat, but that won't be a problem."

"It seems almost boring, to be honest," you say. "Still, it turned out to be an easy job. I'm always thankful for those."

You lounge back in your chair just as Vivian enters the room, looking pissed.

"No luck with the backpay?" Mary asks.

"No, I sorted everything out fine," Vivian says. "They'll just double my hazard pay until it all balances out. It's just irritating to deal with."

"I am officially impressed," you say, swivelling around to face Vivian. "So, what can I advise you on?"

Ordering a prototype for mass production is probably not a good idea - can you even call it a prototype if it's being mass produced? - but you don't have a lot of options. The Hive infiltration could take week, which makes the Sangreal a lot more useful than a one-off trap.

"We don't need miracles," Mary says. "The Sangreal will extend the survivability of TSFs in the field and it should be more than enough to support a Hive infiltration. It's the best decision."

Vivian returns to her work, leaving you alone with Mary again. You take a look at the clock and then at your remaining workload. You can probably keep going, but it'll be a mostly sleepless night if you do, and things aren't so urgent that you need to finish this by tomorrow. On the other hand, you could rest here or go back to your own room in the barracks.

"Family business," she says. "I need to at least make sure my sister has enough to get by. And mother, I suppose. I also need to invest some money into some companies associated with the military. The good news is, I can send it through priority mail and I don't get charged since it's sorted as state affairs."

You clean up, get changed into your physical training clothes and get into your bed. You spend the next few hours with your eyes closed, going over the design of the Sangreal until mental exhaustion finally knocks you out.

You wake up in the morning to the sound of your alarm. You quickly turn it off to give Elaine a chance to get more sleep. She'll probably get up soon after you, but she doesn't need to be up as early as you do.

You change into your service uniform and get back out to the research hangar. The mess isn't open for breakfast, but the hangar's cafeteria is, so you eat a random pastry and swallow three cups of tea to get your morning started.

The only thing left to do is the extra armour plating module. You might be able to finish it yourself, or you could fetch Mary. She and Vivian are probably done with their private time.

There's already quite a bit of work done on the containers for the extra armoured plates, and it's no challenge to get them to fit into your existing modules. In fact, you manage to expand the size of your containers without compromising the TSF's weight or cluttering it up. The end result should significantly increase the odds of survival of a damaged TSF.

"I agree," Mary says. "Now I just need to build a prototype to make sure everything works the way it's supposed to and send the blueprints off for mass production as soon as possible."

Given the series we're in, going on a major mission is more or less a death flag in and of itself.

We'd have to lose all of the supplementary cast in waves first before the core ladies are at risk, though, so maybe that's not the safest way of going about it.
