You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

Noon is settling along the streets when you arrive at the Soames residence. It’s in a much nicer part of town, down towards the waters, where Queens begins to drain away into Brooklyn. The house itself is a squat little thing, probably two to three bedrooms, its second floor looming over a small, walled-off garden. Twisting, dark green creepers lounge across one side of the building, giving you the impression that the Soames prefer a more rustic feel than most of NY is comfortable with.

Making your way up the stoop, you sniff experimentally, drawing in the essence of your surroundings. The air is cleaner than you’re used to here, brighter. You can almost feel the symbiotic to-and-fro between the Soames, their neighbours, and the intermittent little bits of greenery that interrupt the greys and brick-reds of the city.

You smile a little secretively. You’re actually feeling a kinda better – that walk seems to have done you some good. You feel the sun – what scraps of it the winter permits, anyhow – with greater clarity, your limbs and your pulse and the weight of your bones all seeming a little lighter. Maybe you just needed some time to yourself.

>Photosynthetic Charge: 1/5

The door looms up ahead of you. It’s very… purple.

Listen to the wall/door and count heat beats. we will probably have to use our scent and infrared ability's when we are inside, but we can do that when the family is not looking.
Hopefully they do not dislike mutants to any great degree.

Can we call Rogue "Coma Girl" now?

What music do the other group members like? I totally see Rogue loving Taylor Swift

If JJ gets into conspiracy theories, he'd basically be superpowered Fox Mulder.

If JJ gets agi lvl 5, what would be the visual change? Spidey butt?

Does the Extremis rip-off fully kick in at age 18? Or when someone has finished "growing" their original power set? Cause JJ's 18 and all this shit is going on, though it could be because of him being #0

Does JJ have Niemann-Pick and/or Roberts syndrome? Or did he have it in utero?

Does JJ's agility help with musicianship?

>[X] Listen at the door.
>[X] Knock.

Deciding that your privacy is more valuable than the Soames’, you lean up against the aggressively purple portal, listening in. You catch a lot of background sound – the slow, steady groan of floorboards, the minute rattling of windows, but you filter through it. Someone’s playing a radio somewhere – sounds like Paint It Black, you think. Trying to focus solely on the specific intonations of biology, you clear aside the mutterings of the house, and pick three heartbeats out of the din.

Making sure that your cheap sunglasses (that should be your codename, you muse) are in place, you knock hesitantly at the door. A bundle of nerves slowly extends out through your stomach, unravelling up your intestines and diffusing, as if via osmosis, into your bloodstream, your bones, the seat of your skull. You check your shades again and cough pre-emptively, clearing your throat.

Eventually, the door edges open, and a short, slightly chunky woman in her late thirties glances out up at you. She’s wearing a drab, obfuscating turtleneck and the kind of excessively long skirt a nun might wear. She has a vaguely harried look etched into the crevices of her face.
>>
>>32329822
I'm not even talking about actively looking for money. Just walking along with excessively high senses and the sheer population amount of New York.
>>
>(2/2)

“Mrs. Soames?” You venture.

She nods, glancing over your shoulder momentarily. “You’re Mr. Girling?”

Yes. Yes you are. That was the best you could come up with on the fly. You nod in confirmation and she slowly opens the door, letting you in. The house looks about what you expected on the inside – long corridor running up its midsection, flanked on either side by openings into larger rooms. A set of stairs lead up to a small landing up above. It’s cosy. Lots of warm colours. Nice paintings of… stuff. Sort of abstract stuff.

“Could I get you anything?” She asks, rubbing her hands nervously, as if trying to wring something out of them. “Coffee? Tea?”

>[X] “No thanks, that’s okay.”
>[X] “How’re you holding up?”
>[X] “Could I see the scene of the crime?”

“No thanks.” You say it without thinking. In actuality, a nice warm drink would’ve been pretty much a godsend, but it’s out now. You can’t go back, lest you appear awkward and weird. Gotta keep going. “That’s okay.”

She eyes you a little oddly, and you realize that she’s probably just now beginning to take in the strangeness of your appearance – the tears, the generally not-very-sleuthish clothing, possibly the smell. You panic a little, and desperately claw for something to say, something that’ll distract her from the weirdness in front of her.

“How’re you holding up, Mrs. Soames?” You probably should’ve asked that anyway. Yeah.

“Oh, I’m…” She stops rubbing her hands together, but she sort of grips at the hem of her jumper instead, knuckles whitening very slightly. Her pulse dips and quavers, stumbling over itself a little. “…I’m fine… it’s been difficult, but I’m quite alright…”

You’re not sure you believe that. Suddenly you realize where exactly you are, that this is more than just a job, and you have a chance to help these people.

“I think it might be best if I get started right away.” You say, softly. “Could I see the scene of the crime.”

The woman fixes you will a short, wide stare, before seeming to remember something and nodding anxiously.
>>
>(2/2)

“Yes, yes, of course…” She guides you up the stairs, toward a tellingly pink door on one side of the landing. As you approach, she clears her throat and apologizes for staring earlier, commenting that – and this honestly could not make you feel more awkward – you smell a little like lilies.

Placing a careful hand on the doorknob, she ushers you into the room beyond.

It’s… pretty much exactly how you’d expect a young girl’s room to look. A bed sits along one wall, alongside a dresser cluttered with various photos and assorted paraphernalia. There’s a wardrobe on the other side of the room, and a desk-cum-bookshelf fully stocked with all kinds of adolescent fiction. Her schoolbag lies slumped at its feet and there’s a window on the far side of the room, overlooking their garden.

“We’ve kept it exactly as it was…” She chuckles a little weirdly. Like steam venting. “The police didn’t, didn’t even want to take anything…”

Well, you thought as much. You’re not exactly sure how a truant preteen could’ve fixed together this whole closed room deal anyhow. Seems a little complicated for a ten-year-old.

“And the police found nothing of interest?” You ask, grasping for some orientation. You’re not a forensic scientist. You have one tried and tested method for getting answers out of a place, and you can’t really pull that shit with Mrs. Soames watching your ever move. “Nothing at all?”

She pauses, biting her fingers a little, and leads you over to the window, pointing down at a set of long, thin scrapings along the bottom of the windowsill. You can see that they extend all the way along the wood, both inside and out.

“They thought it looked like a, a sign of entry, or something, but the window was still locked from the inside, so…” So they dropped it, you guess. “Detective Watanabe”– Wait, what? Oh, right, yeah. Ms. Phantom’s contact in the NYPD, the one in her notes. –“said that it could be something, um… supernormal. Like that girl with the X-people, the one that can walk through walls.”

You know the one. Shadowlion or something. Shadekitten. Whatever. Hopefully there’s no relation to this case and the X-Men haven’t added unprovoked kidnapping to their long, long list of brushes with the law.

You sigh. Well, at least you seem to have a point of reference now. But you could really do with some space to flex your powers…

“Thank you, Mrs Soames. If you don’t mind, I’d like to inspect the area alone.” Not entirely certain of how authoritative you sound, you quickly add: “This can be delicate work.”

She starts slightly, glancing to and fro among her daughter’s possessions, and nods a little nervously.

“Of course, of… of course.”

She leaves, telling you to ask her if you need anything.

Trigger scent doesn't wear off the second she stops smelling it. And, DBing off her face won't even stun her. You could cut off her arm and she would just gut you with her other arm. If you tear out her eyes she will claw randomly until she hits something.

You afford the room a cursory thermal glance, revealing a cloying world of shifting blue tones. There’s no abnormal heat spots or anything, the only traces of body heat being the vague imprints left in Mrs. Soames’ wake. Closing your eyes, you breathe in deeply, sweeping up the dust and the old hardwood floor and the creeping green outside. The place smells of everything – it’s lived in, unlike most of the scar, existing to your sense of smell as a stain upon a stain upon a stain, all mixed up and blended together and sopping this way and that. You slowly begin to separate the occasional scent from the reoccurring, the uncommon from the common, and finally, the common from the constant.

Soft hair. Tangerines. Running through puddles. Sweat. Long Sundays under the bedsheets. You find Tildie.

Her scent is everywhere, still peeling off the walls somewhat under a week after her disappearance. Interestingly, though? It doesn’t trail down the window. Oh, her hands are all over it, sure, but that’s not the way she left.

You stop to just listen. The floorboards creak under you and the wind whispers through the gnarled, stooped tree outside. Below, the music has changed – you think it’s Spirit in the Sky now – and you can hear people talking. Mrs. Soames, and one you don’t recognize. Mr. Soames, you assume. They’re on the verge of argument. Mr. Soames doesn’t seem to think it was a good idea to leave you alone.

He's a short, hairy, angry Canadian (angry Canadian seems an odd combination) with pointy hand-bits and popularity meaning he wins stuff.
We have super strength and flexibility, so we could probably snake around him and point his fists in his face or something. Snikt that.
Laura is more difficult because she has more locations where pointy bits pop out.

#1: Using Healing 3, some higher level of Claws and Subdermal, JJ can temporarily armor a weakened or broken part of his body (like an arm, leg, etc.) until he can focus mainly on healing or gets medical attention.

#2: Using some collection of abilities as well as Enhanced Flexibility, he can sort of stretch his body like Eugene Tooms from The X-Files.

>[X] Third heartbeat.

“...do you want us to do?” That’s Mrs. Soames. “What exactly should we be doing?”

“Look, I just…” Mr. Soames (?) sighs angrily, pacing himself through whatever he’s about to say. “…I just don’t like the idea of these people running around our house. Don’t tell me you don’t understand that?”

“I do, Donald!” She sounds exasperated. Tired. They both do, actually. “I do! I just – What else are we going to do?”

There is a long, bitter silence.

As you wait, feeling just a little oddly guilty, it occurs to you that you picked out three heartbeats on your way in. Was Tildie not an only child? There didn’t seem to be a third bedroom anywhere on the second floor. Maybe they have a pet?

Focusing your ears, you dig deeper, rooting through the quiet heaving of the brick and the mortar and the old, creaking wood, and eventually pick it out again, two floors down. Not really picking anything else up off it – it’s not talking to anyone or anything. The family pet theory seems likely.

Your attention is caught by Mr. Soames voice suddenly rising.

“Alright, alright!” He shoves something down on a surface. A table or something. “But I’m checking on him in a minute. He could be doing anything up there.”

I've seen them joke about the fact that he was on all the super hero teams at the same time during the Skrull shit. Like how was it mutantly possible for anyone but Maddrox to do that.
Unbreakable skeleton (that occasionally has the flaw of too heavy for him to swim in and at least once had a mention of high enough super-strength can still bend it to where he can't breathe), regeneration, senses, above average strength combined with regen to act stronger than he is. Basic feral package mixed with military upgrades and the best of regeneration abilities (given how often/quickly he heals from burns, which should be damn hard to regen from anyway).

Level 1 sounds nice, but we are invisible. No real need for it. We can just cower our face or something.

Also please stop with all the Hight investment fantasies. Use stuff we have. And stuff that synergies with Invisibility and senses.
Why are we going for 20+ point melee combat abilities, wen we can use ranged attacks for free?
Right now we need something that does damage over time without us being in contact, so we can counter regeneration.
We need ranged poison or some shit like that.
We can get this by pouring some bleach on rocks, or trowing nasty stuff (rusty nails, exc)
>>

And the melee stuff I want is only like 5 points in total (Strength 3 and Claws 2).

>(1/2)

Hmm. Well, you guess that’s understandable. You don’t need this guy’s trust, anyhow. Just his sweet, sweet mystery money.

Deciding to wait for Mr. Soames to come check on you, you take a closer look at the scrapings running along the windowsill. They look very much like something skidded out into the night, its weight or maybe its speed clipping a layer of pain and a few strands of wood from the bottom of the windowsill. It’s not nearly enough of a breach for something to gain entry through – by your estimation, you could barely slip a dollar bill under that crack, let alone a finger with which to unlock the window.

Your ears perk up, and a set of heavy, laborious footsteps reach up to you from the bottom of the stairs. You guess he’s tired of waiting.

You give the marks a quick sniff – smells like rusted metal, kinda, or traces of it – and straighten up, busying yourself with looking busy. Mr. Soames comes thudding through the doorway and you turn around, as if noticing him for the first time.

He’s a big guy with a big flannel shirt. Thick, stormy eyebrows hover over a tired, stern face, and he holds himself with quiet confidence.

“Mr. Girling.” He states.

“Mr. Soames.” You state back, but quickly tone down the confrontational attitude by adding a “Nice to meet you, sir. Is something the matter?”

He glances over his daughter’s belongings, as if to check that nothing’s been misplaced, and eventually relents that no, nothing is the matter.

“Good. Uh, by the by…” In a way, it’s good that he came up here. You’ve got some questions buzzing at the back of your head. “…Is it just you and your wife at home right now?”

His brow sort of rears up at the question, like a huge, hairy creature rising from the fens.

“It’s just Martha and myself.” He confirms.

“No… no pets?”

He shakes his head, eying you a little suspiciously now.

1.) years of malnourishment has negatively affected JJ. he should be able to do 2-3 tons right now but its 1-2, with 3 tons hurting JJ. this has been known since JJ got strength 2.

strength 3 and a healthy JJ gives us equal strength to Ultimate Spider-man, 5-7 tons.If we don't get rid of the nutrition problem, then he probably only gets 3-5 max

2.) its a shitty stop gap. they'd just spray and pray or use an area attack. the best way to improve stealth is get invis 5, get be stealthy lessons from Laura (she did offer that waaay back), and good rolls. just git gud at not being seen

You can tell that he still has his reservations, but the man doesn’t seem to be able to find anything incriminatingly objectionable about you. He shrugs a little grudgingly and meanders a little back toward the door.

“I don’t have a problem with that.” You clearly do though, man. Just send your wife back up, man. She’s nicer, man.

"Thank you." You mumble.

What is it about dads that turns them into total pricks? Are all fathers like this?

You trail out of the room, Mr. Soames hot on your heels, his heavy footsteps never far behind you. You can feel his cautious stare burning into your back. Gonna have to slip off your coat if he keeps this up much longer – which he clearly IS going to do. As you meet the bottom of the stairs and turn in to the corridor running along the centre of the house it becomes very clear that the man intends on sticking to you like your own shadow.

>>
>[X] Find that heartbeat immediately.

You’ve honestly had enough of this guy.

Pausing, you let your senses extend, sifting through the churning clockwork of the household. You catch Mr. Soames’ heartbeat first, strumming along beside you. Mrs. Soames is further down the hall, through one of the doors set into the side of the corridor. You can smell dark red wine and clumps of squatting, velvety furniture, so that’s probably their living room.

The third heartbeat tiptoes up to you from below – right below your feet, actually. Maybe a little to the side. You take a moment to process this information, working it into the meshwork of what you can see, and, pick out the broad, faded wooden doors set under the stairs.

Your old house had something like that. You can’t remember the word for it, but it’s supposed to lead down into a basement, isn’t it?

You make your way to the opening and reach out to take the doorknob…

Mr. Soames stiffens up behind you, raising his voice.

“Why would you want to check the basement?” He asks, his tone most certainly suggesting funny business on your part. “My daughter disappeared from her room. Upstairs.”

Well. That’s actually a good point.

>[X] “I know how to do my job.” (ahahahaha…)

You’ve had it up to here – here being at least your neck or your forehead or something – with this guy. You turn around, treating him to a long, no-doubt mysterious stare from behind the protective glint of your shades.

“I know how to do my job.” You say, eventually, and fight to suppress your own internal monologue, lest it explode all over this man as a stream of incognisant laughter. For a brief moment you wonder how the Soames would feel if they knew their case had been used to, for all intents and purposes, ‘haze the newbie’.

Mr. Soames glares down at you in stern silence, his brow bunching up into a solid mass of burgeoning anger.

“…Why would you possible need to check our basement?” He asks, again, in a louder, accusatory tone of voice.

“I’m being thorough.” You bubble it up on the spot. Like a pro, if you say so yourself. “I’m just checking all possible avenues of investigation.”

“But why the hell the basement? How could anyone possibly get up through there without us knowing?”

“I don’t know.” You grind your teeth and resist the urge to snarl. God you want to snarl or roar or something, just terrify the shit out of him. “Maybe I’ll find out. That’s the point of investigating stuff. To find things out.”

“Son, don’t you take that tone with me!”

“What tone, exactly?”

“That”–
>>
>(2/2)

SCHKLIKT!

You both blink, and turn towards the opposite end of the corridor.

Her shoulders trembling, Mrs. Soames stands not eight foot away, a very loaded shotgun braced in her arms. She’s shaking like a leaf, eyes wide and unreasoning. The barrel of the gun hovers in the ambiguous space between you and Mr. Soames, before slowly swiveling in your direction.

“Step away from him, Donald.”

Mr. Soames swallows hard.

“Now… Martha… let’s… let’s just talk about this…”

So either:

they both have a secret in the basement, which they believe is separate from ~'s disappearance, hence why she hired the agency.

Or.

The thing in the basement can mind control people, but only one at a time. It was controlling Mr. Sketchy, but when that failed to stop us form getting too close, it switched to Mrs. Sketchy who was closer to the shotgun.

And its power is that none of them remember or notice anything odd about their actions when under control.

But the rap battle was hilarious and resulted in Scarborough Fair
>>
>>32334503
>No seriously is salty the new rustled jimmies?

I have no idea.

I was making a sex joke in that post.
>>
>>32334483
She likes JJ, she has as good as admitted it.

Last tag game, we ended up with JJ and Laura holding hands.

Folks are letting it progress at its own pace, but Laura is into JJ big time.
>>
>>32333812
double issue today?
>>
>>32334477
Level 1 Is out of control enough, (with the cannibalism flaw we have). Any body fluids would change us.
Try keeping job when your face changes every 3 days.
>>
>>32334542
we can but hope.
>>
>>32334533
Well yeah that obvious, we knew she was gonna like JJ from the first time she was introduced, but I imagine that instincts take over when someone shape shifts into you, especially when 99% of your instincts are to kill shit
>>
>>32334483
nah, she'd remain still and stare blankly.

>>32334461
the same shit we did in this thread and have done for the past 70+ threads?

>>32334466
>>32334451
we're not always going to have shit to throw

>>32334522
I know, sometimes failure leads to character building and or a new life goal (not that tg would ever take that well)
>>
>>32334483
The fuck are you talking about. She has a huge crush on JJ. Crusty said on one of the first threads that a romantic relationship can start after we reach relationship level 3. We're at 4. She would have no problems kissing JJ.
>>
>>32334569
>a romantic relationship can start after we reach relationship level 3

I think you mean level 4.

I could be wrong though.
>>
>>32334569
I meant the whole JJ is gone and now it appears that she just kissed herself part, not the kiss
>>
Is Crusty gone?
>>
>>32333812

Where the fuck are you, Crusty?
>>
>>32334568
Yes, because we can't pick up a rock, or piece of wall. Especially with super strength.
>>
>>32334568
>the same shit we did in this thread and have done for the past 70+ threads?
Were you here when JJ couldn't go into the store? Or, when we almost got into shit with the mutant patrol with Peter?
Looking human would salve a lot of problems.
>>
>>32334606
those aren't always going to be there, anon.
>>
>>32334579
Not it's 3. Crusty confirmed we were at 3 with Victoria before we broke up with her.
>>
>>32334564
not really.
relationship may have been swept from us if we found others very soon after finding laura, but it took a while.

She disregarded logic, reason and instinct coming after us when we were captured. Very enamored with JJ. I doubt we would shift into a replica of Laura, but we would be able to hide none standard defects.

>>32334568
Hence shittyer version.

>>32334579
Kind of hard to tell, we went up in relationship with her very fast considering.
>>
>>32334600

he made like JJ and dissapeared.
>>
>>32334619

>Not having a pet rock right next to pocket sand

Stay pleb, JJ
>>
>>32334593
>>32334600
Would you want to hang around here after seeing what you had created?
>>
>>32334656
Taser hands trump pocket sand, though i will admit pet rock is pritty boss.

>>32334663
Sometimes he sticks around for post quest Q and A.
>>
>>32334547
>out of control
>Any body fluids would change us
It ain't involuntary. If it were it'd be a sure thing. The pastebin says
> JJ may
>may
Not WILL, every time upon consumption of genetic material.
>>
>>32334619
Yes, because we cant tear off piece of something, or trow our buttons, or pocket something, or shit in our hand and toss shit.

Seriously, that is not an excuse. We can rip off enemies body parts, or even our own pinkie and trow it, in worst case.

Of course, we can always FUCKING RIP OFF PIECE OF WALL AND TROW IT.

Unless we are in water and not carrying couple of rocks, we should always have monition.
>>
>>32334663

When people were starting shit over "out of character options", he stepped the fuck up and talked openly about it.

I don't see why he wouldn't do the same here.
>>
>>32334615
I've been here since thread one.

I remember when disguise checks were still a thing.

I remember when we sprouted fangs and claws right in the middle of the phone store. you know what happened? we invis'd out and sent Kevin in the next day. problem solved, with no x points spent.

>>32334656
>throwing your pet rock

reported to ACSPCA and FBI

>>
>>32334715
I would be too scared of Kim to laugh.
>>
>>32334700
We carry some pocket rocks for cases like that.
Seriously, its not hard. Rocks are fucking everywhere.
DB has even more limited munition. And shitton of downsides.
>>
>>32334710
Now you're seriously reaching for the most bizarrely pessimistic reading possible. Did you take a class in mental gymnastics?

You're just assuming that JJ won't be able to control the shifting, ever.
>>
>>32334710
It's not random. Why would it be random?

You eat DNA, and you... may somehow be unable to shift into that person? Or may randomly shift into someone else entirely?
>>
>>32334749
Look at comics. Witch shifter could completely control himself?
Even Mystique couldn't.

We have flaw that can fuck us up.
Crusty specifically said that it will fuck us up.
You want to invest in ability affected by flaw.
>>
>>32334663
Crusty isn't such a pussy anon. I guess he was busy today, short thread after all.
>>
>>32334788
you're talking out of your ass.

though Genetic Mimicry is redundant and unnecessary.

we have a better not getting noticed power and have had it since the first thread.

Invisibility.
>>
>>32334788
You seem to be reading it in a truly absurd way though. It's no more uncertain than zappy hands power.

Come on.
>Level 3: JJ may now maintain the change for an hour.
>Level 4: JJ now only needs an at least somewhat extended amount of physical contact with a target to take on their shape. Additionally, he can access a few of their mannerisms.
>Level 5: By consuming a significant portion of a person’s brain, JJ may permanently ‘store’ their genetic code and take their shape at any time.

Are you going to read every single "may" as in "he has no influence over it! who knows?" too?
>>

He said on Twitter he was free all day Saturday.

It's been a while. I wonder... one minor modification to the ritual...

Crusty is kill

I thought he did, guess plans changed or he had to do something really quick and will be back.

>he has a life outside QMing.

But he also said he'd be free all day.
>>
>>32334821
>not getting noticed
Yes, being invisible in a crowd will totally never be noticed.

Or trying to talk to a normal person while invisible.

Or buying stuff.

There are times you want to be SEEN but not noticed, you realize?
>>
>>32334881
he didn't say he'd spend it here

which is amusing because crusty is totally writing Laura like the main character from Drive
>>
Guys cant we hide our most visible mutations by getting some contacts?
>>
>>32335048
I saw Ryan Gosling at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
>>
>>32335091
not really JJ's eyes are black now iirc

the shades are just fine
>>
>>32335037
>>32335037
>“Excuse me…” He gets a closer look at your tattered silhouette. “…sir. Would you mind removing your glasses, please?”
That is not "just fine". Your definition of "just fine" is wrong.

Did you SEE the karma burning people had to do that thread?
>>
>>32333812
ummm... Wut?
>>
3 threads to 404ing.
>>
>>32335139
karma burning comes from shit rolls, something that will always be a factor regardless of what powers JJ has.

Genetic Mimicry is overall a redundancy
