You, Hillalum, and your mixed force of soldiers are on the move, heading eastward from town to town and checking for signs of your enemy. You find them in abundance. There are ruined villages and scorched fields, and many from the intact settlements have fled to the hills or to Ligish. The mood is tense.

You've noticed that Hillallum doesn't dig burrows for himself when the party makes camp. He stays in one of the larger tents with the Zagrosi instead. Right now he's just looking out into the foothills on the horizon.

> Practice fighting with him
Something we've wanted to do for a while.

If we get time to talk, then do
> Explain why you're wearing a chisel around your neck
>ask if he ever digs burrows for himself
>>
>>32422690
the offer to share a burrow with him is so tempting, but we have to be somewhat professional here.

>Practice fighting with him

try to teach him how to use his claws.
>>

> Practice fighting with him
Boy can't use his claws. Boy needs to know how to use them.

He's way better at it than us.

hm... Since he is so good at spearwork, maybe we can let him borrow our spear.
>>
>>32422690
>Practice fighting with him
Nothing else.
>>
>>32422690
You stick the butt of your spear in the dirt. "Did you eat already? Do you have time to practice fighting a little?"

Hillallum returns his attention to his immediate surroundings. Especially you. "Oh! Sure, that seems like a good idea. I didn't bring any training weapons, though. Should I go find some sticks?"

"Let's practice with these." You snip your claws. "You're good, but if we share what we know we'll be even better. You've been fighting longer with human weapons, but I've claw-wrestled in the underworld. Show me what you can do."

"You what?"

"Show me!"

"Yes, Hunzuu..." Already unarmed, he lowers his stance and opens his claws. You circle around each other.

Hillallum skitters sideways and flexes his claws with what you think might be nervousness, like he doesn't know what to do with them when they're idle. You start off by advancing slowly on him to see how he reacts. He uses his claws like thrusting weapons, trying to quickly poke you with one before disengaging. It's annoying and probably wouldn't do much in a fight. You pick up speed and grab him. He pushes back and shows that his strength is only a little less than yours, but he's not pushing with a goal in mind, so you can easily flip him over. "Ow! I'm okay, I'm okay. More, please..."

You go faster than before, showing off some tricks you learned in the underworld. Though you're bigger than him, you manage to maneuver under him and flip him over again, much to his surprise.

After that you go a little easier on him to see if he'll try using the moves you've used on him. To his credit, he tries. You're proud of him. Also, you can't explain why, but there's something exciting about locking claws with him.

After throwing him down a few more times and letting him knock you over once or twice, you see that you've attracted a sizable audience. Men from both cities are looking on as they eat and boast.

> Don't hold back. Keep gently correcting him when he does something wrong.

> Let him score impressive pinfalls on you. It'll make him and his people happy.
>>
>>32423187
> Don't hold back. Keep gently correcting him when he does something wrong.
Gotta train 'im right.
Though, do try to make him look good too. Or at least, to make it obvious we're teaching him how to fight in a way we are much more accustomed than him.

We have to do this again later, but with spears instead of claws. Let him show off how much better he is at it.
>>
>>32423187
> Let him score impressive pinfalls on you. It'll make him and his people happy.
Do him this favor and we'll dig some spear lessons out of him later
>>
I hope this doesn't weigh too heavily on how people view our relative strengths.
I hope people notice we fight way harder in the field than in a friendly matchProbably because he's the boy we like
>>
>>32423187
> Don't hold back. Keep gently correcting him when he does something wrong.

It would be disrespectful to hold back.
>>
>>32423187
> Don't hold back. Keep gently correcting him when he does something wrong.
Best way to make him learn.
>>
>>32423292
>>32423230
Can't we do this when his people aren't watching? He already knows we're better. He has issues with respect already.
>>
>>32423347
Well, I sort of want to do a public spearwork thing to counter out the clawwork show.
How hard would it be to throw together a training spear or two? Can we just take heads off of spears, or would that ruin them?
>>
>>32423347
He comes from a city where one has to EARN respect. To just give him respect by throwing it would be insulting.
>>
We seem to be at a split vote.
The compromise is
> Just try to make both of you look good and salute a worthy opponent at the end
yeah?
>>
>>32423374
At least the middle options then. He won't like throwing, but he won't like getting wrecked in front of everyone.
>>
>>32423187
You don't hold back. You have the advantage in both size and claw-fighting experience, and you let it show. Occasionally you'll put a claw gently to his throat to expose flaws in his defenses or pause the match to correct his stance and physically move his claws into a better position. You notice that he's getting blue in the face. Still, when you decide it's time to break, he thanks you and hands you your spear. "Thank you, Hunzuu. I needed that. It's important that we're all prepared for what we're going to face." You think you hear some of the soldiers from Zagros grumbling about their inferior scorpion. And if you can hear it, Hillallum can, too.

>Good. Now he knows how much more he has to learn.
> Follow Hillallum to see if he's feeling okay
> Track down the soldiers who are complaining, grab them, and hold them in front of Hillallum until they apologize.
>>
>>32423476
> Follow Hillallum to see if he's feeling okay
Welp, I called it.
>>
>>32423476
>>Follow Hillallum to see if he's feeling okay
Ignore those jokers, you just haven't been practicing claws like I have.
We'll practice spearwork on our way back, and you can show me tricks.
We'll use broken dead enemy spears.

>>32423506
It wasn't exactly unexpected. I just hope to make up for it later.
>>
>>32423476
> Track down the soldiers who are complaining, grab them, and hold them in front of Hillallum until they apologize.
This is the rational and sane thing to do.
>>
>>32423476
> Follow Hillallum to see if he's feeling okay

Before either of us leave, we should ask him to maybe spar with us later and teach us how to better use the spear, so that he can show where he is better than us.
>>
>>32423528
oh, also, I'm hoping he USES these claw tricks in combat to be a big damn badass.
>>
>>32423476
You wonder if you went too far. While it can be fun to tease Hillallum, it's not fun to torment him. You skitter after him. "Hillallum? Are you all right?"

Hillallum nods, but doesn't turn to face you. "Y-yes... I just need a little space..."

"Is this about what those men said? Their words mean nothing. You're a match for any one of them - any dozen of them! And soon you'll be as good with your claws as I am."

"You're still getting better. I'll have to catch up..."

"Look, how about next time we practice with spears? I'm no good with those."

"Even after training for a year?"

"Well... a lot of my training with Nakurtum was just strength training, moving heavy stones and statues around. I never like the weapons drills."

"Why not?"

"Because she's better than me."

"Oh..." He smiled and turns around. "I guess that's not something you're used to, huh? But you've got to accept it before you can be taught anything."

You fetch some spare tent poles for use as spears. "Come on, that wasn't enough to get either of us tired. Let's practice with spears for a bit."

Hillallum smiles for a change. "All right!"

The first few times Hillallum thrusts his practice weapon at you, you instinctively flinch and raise your claws to swat it away. "Hey, that's cheating!" Hillallum says.

"I'm sorry. Okay, for real this time." You lower your claws and do your best impression of holding your spear at the ready.

It turns out that the only spear move you've really mastered with your spear is preening down with it at something you have held fast with your claws. Sometimes you manage to score a touch on Hillallum at the same time he scores a touch on you, but mostly you flail around ineffectually and wish you could just snip his weapon in half with your claws. To his credit, Hillallum is as patient with you as you were with him. Once he skitters up alongside you and holds your hands in his to show you how to counterattack. It turns out that swinging a spear like a club and hoping to touch the opponent's weapon with it is not a good counterattack.

Time to devise a secret code to talk with each other without spies butting in.
>>
>>32424042
Hillallum starts to breathe more heavily as he puts you through your paces. You have decent reflexes - they just need to be trained to do the right things on short notice. "Are you doing all right now? I'm going to come at you again."

You simply nod. You have to focus. After feinting a few times, Hillallum drives his weapon at you and you counterattack just like he taught you, pushing aside his weapon's head and touching his chest in one fluid motion.

"That's good! Now let me teach you some drills to do. That'll give you more things to think about when sparring. Here' I'm going to stand beside you. My master always complained that I'd mirror his moves when he did this facing me."

Losing track of time, you keep training well into the night until both of you are tired. A day's march isn't a problem for you, but a day's march plus all this fighting starts to wear you down.

Hillallum returns the tent poles to the bundle where you found them. "Thanks for all that, Hunzuu. Sometimes my own people are a little... reserved about offering each other help. It's a competitive city. Men don't want to admit they need instruction, or accidentally give their neighbors the tools they'll use to surpass them. But you're very open. It's... nice."

"Thanks! You are, too. I bet you know a lot of things I don't. Can you read?"

"Sure. Can you?"

"Well... I can read some things. I'm really good at reading things I've already memorized."

He giggles. "Does that count as reading?"

"Yes. Yes it does."

Are the men still watching?

Tousling aside, we should retire to our burrow soon. And he to his tent(what's with that, are we asking?) We're gonna be sleepy in the morning if we don't get our shuteye soon.

Oh, and our city is pretty competitive like yours. Though, you have to worry more about people stabbing you from behind than from the front, so a bit of training is good.
>>
>>32424635
training doesn't really help with that though
precautions and paranoia do
>>
>>32424660
Well, I mean training isn't a thing held tightly to the heart in our city.
Because even if you're a good spearmen, you can still get poisoned just as easy with a bit of tainted wine.
>>
>>32424505
"If you say so! Well, I guess I should check in with the watchmen and then get to sleep."

"Yeah... We move out pretty early tomorrow, don't we? Ugh, I don't want to have to dig a hole after all that..."

"Then why do you?"

"It makes me feel cozy!"

"Just bring your favorite blanket. That's what I do."

You can't believe he has a favorite blanket. "Oh, you." You sidle up beside him and give his hair a thorough tousling, gently enough to be friendly but firm enough to remind him that you plan to make him yours. He has the perfect hair for it, with just enough volume to it to dig your fingers into.

He blushes, of course. "Good night, Hunzuu."

"Good night!"

You show the way straight to the mountain pass. You send the few Charioteers who came with horses out to scout the area around you as you move. Most of them report nothing but old stone ruins half-buried in the foothills, but one of them claims to have seen a centaur who fled to the south.

You're sure it's not Soul-of-Lightning because you left him in the city to look over things while you're gone. He may be a drunkard who's not terribly powerful, but you figure that he might be able to help rein in Iltani or Patience if they get out of line.

> Follow the centaur

Ah crap. Did they already double back? Or is it a whole different group? I know they're using multiple groups.
> Don't be distracted. You want to reach the naga kingdom before the lizard can completely turn them against you.
I guess we're going to visit the nagas? I thought we were only going to patrol around our city, but this works too.
>>

> Don't be distracted. You want to reach the naga kingdom before the lizard can completely turn them against you.
>>
>>32425087

> The centaur would be a wild goose chase. He's at least as fast as our horses, and probably more familiar with the territory. The scout closest to the trail should continue following him and report back if they find anything.

If he has a marker he can leave to mark his trail in case the worst happens, that would be appreciated.
>>
It's so much easier to have dudes around to scout for stuff and carry things. Much preferable.

We shoulda brought the snake folks, though, if we were going all the way to snake kingdom. Oh well, live and learn.
>>
>>32425169
You weigh the risks and benefits of chasing after this group of monsters, and you try to remember all the advice that Sharo taught you. "Have one scout keep an eye to the south of us. All the others, stay within easy reach of the main force, close enough to join us if we're attacked. We keep going east."

The troops change formation, and all the scouts but one stay close enough to be able to hear if an alarm is raised. The one scout who goes out further never returns. That tells you all you need to know. There's a hostile force to the south, but you can't let it distract you. You have to get to your real destination before they can cut you off.

In haste, you make some rather imprudent commands. You reduce rest time and send your men on something bordering a forced march. Your decision to follow the sun directly until noon, without adjusting for the season and your current latitude, makes you veer your troops too far north. By the time you've adjusted for the mistake and found the pass, there's an armed centaur camp waiting for you. With them is a freakish humanoid creature with a body of red conjured flesh, like Nakurtum's arm, and the head of a jackal, riding on a lammasu. When you catch sight of them, they're already charging toward you. It's clear they don' want to talk.

You take up Ishtar's spear, double-check the straps on your helmet, and rush to the front lines. The whole front rank consists of spearmen from Zagros, including, you're happy to see, Hillallum. He points to your spear and shouts over the sounds of men commanding each other and archers firing at the advancing centaurs. "You're holding it well!"

You'd love to fight by his side, but spreading the two of you apart has its advantages, too. Th centaurs immediately form a wedge and aim for the ordinary men between you as some of them are shot down by the two volleys of arrows that your men manage to loose before the melee begins. You rush to flank the centaurs. Their reluctance to fight flesh-eaters has put them right between two of them. You tear through one with your claws while driving your spear into the nape of another's neck. Actually bothering to use a weapon has its advantages!

The sight of the approaching lammasu troubles you more than the small cluster of centaurs who have focused on you. You withdraw, carefully dispatching one by one those centaurs who choose to pursue you. You leave about five of them with gushing wounds in their necks and chests as you reach an area safe enough to dig into your pack and fetch the grapple hook. Hillallum keeps fending off centaurs and drawing their attention away from his men so they can attack the beasts more safely.

The lammasu with the jackal-beast riding upon it clearly knows that you are the priority target, and the feeling is mutual. The lammasu's eyes glow red, and containers on its flanks burst open and turn into hawk-sized red insects. This one knows blood magic.

Hmm. I guess I'm the swing vote here.
Let's hold off on the archers for now, I guess. Our troops are clashing, and they'll either not hit anything important (other than the llamasu) and thus waste combat arrows or hit our own guys (in addition to theirs), neither of which I want to do.

All I can add is that if we can get the jackal-thing thrown off then we should quickly kill the lammasu. Better to fight one enemy then two. Or we can put our faith in those Something of Eight guys that they can take care of the lammasu whilst we kill the jackal-thing.

"Archers! Hold! I'm going to grab onto the lammasu!"

"Hold! This one is Hunzuu's!" Your orders are repeated among the archers in the din of battle. They make sure not to shoot you, instead shooting at the small group of centaur skirmishers trying to come up around them from the west. The Band of Eight didn't yet seem to have a better idea than to harry the lammasu with heavy javelins - they too hold off as you attempt your audacious maneuver.

You rush toward the lammasu, leap off a nearby boulder, and hurl your grapple hook at it. The hook catches one of the straps fastening the saddle and blood bags to the beast. The lammasu lurches and tilts to one side, struggling to stay in the air. The jackal-thing yowls at you and tries to reach down to cut the rope. Buzzing blood-conjured horrors swarm and sting at you.

You climb the rope as fast as you can, flailing your legs and pulling at the rope with both arms and both claws at the same time. The lammasu's wild movements are making you dizzy, and huge blood monsters are stinging you, but you really, really don't want to fall.

> The stings don't give you wounds, but you're now in pain and taking a penalty to some rolls.

The jackal-thing can't quite bend down low enough to reach the rope under the long bronze hook, so he does the next best thing and starts unfastening the saddle. Just as you're about to find a clawhold in the lammasu's flank, it comes loose, and for a breathless moment you feel weightless.

The jackal-thing cuts away the saddle, along with the lammasu's supply of blood. The lammasu quickly uses what's left to cast some kind of spell on the falling jackal-thing.

Fortunately, your'e able to dig your claws into the lammasu just in time, just under its wing. Now you're grabbing wet bone instead of rope. It starts descending rapidly. It makes something between a scream and a maniacal laugh. "HAAAAH! What's the matter? It's just the end of the world!"

He never reaches the word "down." His whole body pulps open as he strikes the ground. You are a bloody mess, but fortunately it's all red blood. Not yours.

Well, it's heading east, and so are you. Maybe you'll run into it again.

You turn back, unstrap Ishtar's spear from your back, and charge into the battle. With their lammasu gone, the centaurs are less eager to face you. They'd much rather kill your men, meaning you spend a lot of time running toward struggling units of spearmen and trying to save them. Their axes hit hard, and one of them cracks the chitin on your left legs.

> You now have 1 wound.

Due to your valiant efforts, the centaurs rout. You lost fifteen men, but it could have been worse. You show the men the remains of Ishtar's temple, and you pray for her aid among the rubble and flagstones as the dead are burned and the smoke rises from the valley.

After praying to Ishtar until you hope she's pleased, you remember that half of these men don't even really worship Ishtar, Hillallum included. You go back to the western end of the mountain pass in search of him, with an empty pot in each hand. You find him, apparently uninjured, burying dead centaurs one by one.

"Hillallum? Are you all right? Were you hurt in the battle?"

He shakes his head and brushes some dirt out of his hair. "No, but..."

You draw closer, concerned. "But what?"

"I dishonored myself. Some blood touched my mouth, and... it was like you said. I forgot myself. I started eating a centaur. I said inappropriate things to my men."

You set down your empty pots and offer clawhugs. He accepts. "It's all right. I have the same problem. But I know from experience that it can be controlled. You'll be forgiven, because your great deeds will be so much greater than your failings. You'll be strong."

He nods and squeezes you a little tighter. "We could be strong together..."

You try to collect some blood from the dead, but you fail to collect most of it properly. Collecting pure blood from those who have been dead for a while is tricky. You end up with 3 good pots' worth.

Every time we have eaten flesh, our body has been described as engorging. The last time that Hunzuu molted, she had eaten a particularly large meal of the maggot king which caused her to finally outgrow her old chitin.

Ostensibly these growth spurts happen whenever Anu pleases, but the only solid identifier that I can link to growing (physically) as a flesh eater is to, well, eat flesh. Unfortunately, that also seems like the way we get most of our other skills bumped quickly as well.
>>
>>32429536

I'll grant you that it's both possible and that circumstantial evidence is high. Still, we've turned down raw meat in the past for much less important reasons. Next time we go home, I'll vote for more delicious meat, but right now I think it's a bad time.
>>

You cast Knit the Wound on yourself. Fortunately, there are no humorous mishaps like when you tried to heal the Gold Priest's favorite whore. The one jar you have left isn't enough to do much with, but you use it to stop one injured Ligishi spearman from bleeding into his bandages. He is extremely grateful.

Hillallum watches you do your work from a distance. "Wow... I didn't know you could do that. That's like the magic that made us, right?"

"That's right! Are you curious?"

"I... no, I don't think I want to do that. Not yet, at least. I don't want to be around any more blood than I have to, until I can better control myself."

My wager is more on the mystical side of flesh eating to molt. You keep what you kill, and so on. The type of flesh and mood that struck Hunzuu during the consumption likely plays a key roll in how she grows. Trying the normal meat, glutton approach might not be a bad idea though.
