You are Flight lieutenant Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to fight the BETA, aliens who threaten to exterminate humanity. You and your allies have just returned from a mission in Lyon, where you disabled a BETA Hive and effectively forced the aliens to abandon France, for now. All it took was a sentient Tactical Surface Fighter.

While your victory is being celebrated throughout what's left of the European Union - you've been assured by representatives of various governments that everyone involved in the operation will be getting medals, and that the infiltration team will get just about every European medal that's still being handed out - you've been too busy to enjoy the media circus. The bulk of Europe's TSF forces are currently deployed to secure France and the Camelot group has only just returned to Dover after almost a week of non-stop operations.

Right now, you're with Mary as she entertains her 'guest.'

"I'm surprised you could come, Yuuko," Mary says. "I thought your work was keeping you busy. Or is that no longer a problem?"

"You know how it is for people with standards," Yuuko says. "I can't be satisfied until I've done my job right, but that's no reason to deny myself a vacation."

"I suppose that's true." Mary finishes the cup of tea she's just poured for herself. "After all, where will your standards come from if you can't get a good night of sleep?"

The two women laugh like they're about to shove guns in each other's faces.

You stand there and wait out the storm. On the other side of the room, Yuuko's security detail is doing the same. That UN Captain is suppressing her twitching surprisingly well.

At least it makes for good entertainment.

"What can I say?" Yuuko shrugs dramatically. "Scientific breakthroughs are so tiring."

"Yes, I imagine it must be quite exasperating to stare at a blank board all day."

"Not all of us are satisfied with reinventing the wheel."

"I know, it's quite disappointing." Mary sighs. "If only I knew how to swindle the UN out of billions. I have to make do with a box of scraps."

The civilized sniping goes on until the base's general alarm sounds. Then it gets louder as the two women start shouting alarms.

Oddly enough, that alarm is not Code 991.

Yuuko's security team looks at you expectantly.

"That's the emergency alarm," you tell them. "Stay here for now. The MPs should send someone to escort you to one of the shelters."

"I'll get an update on the situation directly from the command centre."

The base is in chaos all the way from the visitor's room, and the command post is even worse. The analysis and operators are pouring over computer screens and handwritten notes and juggling two or three phone lines. You head straight for Vivian and pull her slightly away from the mess.

"What's the emergency?"

"In six hours, the United States will declare war on the European Union, citing theft of military technology - that would be your doing - and Europe's refusal to share the remains of the Lyon Hive per the agreed-upon treaties."

"Oh, wonderful." It's obviously just an excuse, but it's a very good one. "Where does that put us?"

"We're the only force of Typhoons left in the United Kingdom," Vivian says. "Carriers will be arriving to pick us up in a few hours and then we'll intercept an American strike group. According to our sources, they're sending the Nimitz along with one squadron of F-22 Raptors, one squadrons of F-15E Strike Eagles and three squadrons of Super Hornets, one F-18E and two F-18Fs. The destroyer escort is unknown at this time."

"So that's army, navy and marines," you say. "They really want us dead."

"I need to stay here until we have a plan sorted out." Vivian kisses you on the cheek. "I'll meet you in the Excalibur when I'm done."

Right outside the command centre, there's a trucking waiting to bring you and three other pilots to the hangars. It's standard procedures to set up a taxi system like this in case of emergency.

You spot Elaine standing outside her Typhoon as you enter the hangars. You head for the locker room and immediately get changed.

"Julian, I need to talk to you." Mary intercepts you as you come out of the lockers. "I have the Excalibur scheduled for upgrades."

"You mean the engine?"

The Excalibur's engine was designed so that it could easily be swapped with a new one and the carrier won't be here for a few more hours. That should be enough time.

"The engine, or the full cyberwarfare suite," Mary says. "The firewall is fully operational, but its hacking programs aren't. The Rutherford field generated by the engines will make you effectively immune to attacks - as long as Merlin doesn't make any mistakes - but the cyberwarfare suite will be able to hack into the Americans' tactical networks."

One (semi-)invulnerable TSF is good, but being able to get into their systems means we can circumvent the enemy TSFs' stealth systems, which makes our entire army more effective.

Even a little while of the entire enemy army getting complacent in thinking they're off-radar is going to do a ton to turn a battle.

"I'll get the remote upgrade ready." Mary turns to leave, but then quickly turns back to kiss you on the cheek. "Good luck."

You climb into the Excalibur's cockpit and plug your fortified suit into the TSF.

"Merlin, are you aware of the situation."

The AI's text response appears in your HUD.

'Affirmative. Our mission is to intercept a carrier strike group inbound from the United States of America.'

"Is that going to be a problem for you?"

'Not at all. I am only interested in executing my pilot's orders and in ensuring my own survival. I do not believe this level of opposition is beyond your skill. I will be happy to cooperate."

"Good." You open up the main computer's maintenance prompt. "I'm proceeding with some of your scheduled upgrades to the cyberwarfare suite before we leave. Please provide assistance with the calibrations."

Between Mary's work at the remote update station, you on the maintenance console and Merlin debugging everything live, you easily install the cyberware suite and integrate it into Merlin's existing software. With this, getting into the Americans' systems should be child's play.

"We're done here," Mary says. "I need to get the Sangreals ready for deployment. They haven't been restocked yet, but we have to take what we can."

"Understood," you say. "I'll see you on the carrier."

That leaves you alone with Merlin. You pass the time with a systems check and wait for someone in charge to arrive. There is, however, one thing that's bothering.

"Merlin, have you analyzed the data on the BETA command elements?"

'I believe my analysis on the subject is complete. The BETA command structure is located in the original Hive. It does not accept the concept of carbon-based life. That is all I know. I do not believe I can draw further conclusions on the subject.'

"Do you know how we can beat it?"

'I recommend large explosions. Many large explosions. Once I am operating at definitive capacity, other options might become available.'

"I'll keep that in mind."

Vivian soon arrives, looking flustered. She takes her seat behind you and loads her console.

"You look terrible," you say. "Bad news?"

"From what we can tell, twelve Arleigh Burke destroyers and twelve Virginia submarines are escorting the Nimitz and since Europe has been pouring all its resources into TSFs..."

"The Royal Navy doesn't have the resources to stand against those numbers," you finish for her.

"That's right," Vivian says. "And we'll need to watch out for reinforcements. We'll need to deploy the minimum of assets here."

"I don't think you could call the Camelot group 'minimal.'"

It takes another two hours for the carriers to arrive, and then another hour for all the TSFs to get on board their respective carriers. The declaration of war will have been made official by now.

You disembark to find Mary's own Sangreal has been grouped with Arthur squadron, so you'll be together for the trip. No one knows exactly how long it'll take to intercept the American carrier strike group, but it'll take a few days.

Fortunately, you're not lacking for company.

You spend most of your spare time with Elaine. Vivian and Mary both have their own duties to take care of, but Elaine and you are pilots. Until the shooting starts, you're on standby.

So you wake up next to Elaine one morning. Your clothes are... somewhere. At least you had time to clean up before going to sleep, so there's no mess. Elaine wakes up shortly after you did and grabs for the nearest shirt, which happens to be one of yours.

"I love this part," Elaine says.

"The part where we're ready to go again?"

Elaine pinches you and you scream a little.

"No, the part where I wake up next to someone I trust," she says. "If it was just about going at it again, Mary and Vivian are much better than you are."

"Ah, but I can do everything they can, and then some."

You push Elaine down and then start kissing down her neck, then her chest, then her stomach, then she spreads her legs and-

The carrier's alarm interrupts you. You both reach for your fortified suits and get ready for battle.

Vivian is waiting for you when you enter the Excalibur.

"We'll be making contact with the American strike group in two hours," she says. "We've determined that an aggressive approach would be best. We want to keep them as far away from our own carriers as possible."

It'd be a simple task if it was just a matter of dealing with TSFs, but an Arleigh Burke destroyer carries a lot of missiles. They don't pack the same punch as the Laser-class BETA do, but a good hit will knock a Typhoon out of the sky.

The Excalibur's stealth, however, should be good enough to prevent a missile lock.

You have stealth. You have a brand new cyberwarfare suite. You have a TSF that outperforms the Strike Eagle and the Super Hornet. You could do a lot of damage if you charged in alone and, most importantly, you could easily get away with it.

"Hey, Vivian, shouldn't we send a TSF as a scout before we get in range of the strike group?"

"... do you really want to go out there to scout?"

"No." She's the one making the plan, so you can't very well lie to her. "But we're the only ones with stealth and those destroyers are going to have a lot of missiles."

"All right, I'll think of something," she says. "Just give me a minute."

It takes some time, but Vivian gets a deployment order from Hall. You'll be heading out first as soon as you're within a comfortable range of the strike group. Too far and you might run out of fuel during the fight. Too close and there won't be any point in sending you out to scout.

"Even for you, going out alone like this is really stupid," Elaine says. "They have a lot of TSFs out there, not to mention the destroyers and submarines."

"The Excalibur is the only TSF with stealth and we need an edge before the battle," you say. "Don't worry about it. I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think it would work."

At last, your carrier reaches the appropriate range. You launch off the carrier and ascend as fast as your TSF will allow.

'I am activating the cyberwarfare suite.'

"Vivian-"

"I know. You're not the only one Merlin talks to."

High above the ocean, you circle around the carrier strike group until the sun is at your back.

It's time to bounce.

You begin your dive at full thrust, but as far as you can tell, no one reacts. Your stealth systems must be working.

"Merlin, upload all the flight data for the American TSFs to Vivian's console. Live, please."

'Understood.'

"Excellent timing," Vivian says. "The Nimitz is starting to launch TSFs now."

The destroyers, however, are not nearly as capable. You line one of them in your sights as you finish your bounce and pull the trigger. Your 36mm cannons aren't enough to destroy it, but they put a hell of a dent in the hull and the crew will think twice about coming up on deck.

You level your dive just a few feet above the water and head for the next destroyer in sight. Their cannons can't depress enough to aim at you and you're sticking too close to them for missiles to be effective. Meanwhile, the Nimitz is launching TSFs away from you. Even if they know you're there - you don't show up on radar, but someone must have a visual on you - it will take time for the TSFs to circle back and find you.

"The RAF is launching its TSFs now," Vivian says. "I'm coordinating the attack."

And now, the American TSFs can't intercept you without leaving their backs open to the rest of Camelot group.

You weave through the destroyer formation, putting as many holes in their hull as you can. There's no catastrophic damage, but it's more than enough to keep damage control crews busy and having lots of people running around will make operations more difficult.

Time to move on to the next target.

Well... maybe. They have essentially one of the only untouched populations in the world, with a lot of refugees from nearly everywhere, so they certainly wouldn't lack the bodies. Since the MuvLuv verse never went through the same outsourcing craze the modern US did, they also have the largest industrial capacity of any nation on the planet, since China and Russia got nommed, and plenty of uncontested resources.

The problem is the BETA. the US Might be able to force all the other nations to capitulate officially, but plenty of their armed forces would reject that and keep fighting. By the time the USA pacified them, BETA would probably be knocking on the white house door.

You swerve to land on the Nimitz's deck and drop your assault cannons. You draw your sword and leap at the two nearest TSFs, which happen to be a pair of Raptors. They turn to face you, but the Black Widow had the Raptor soundly beat in agility and the Excalibur has better gear than she does. You easily slash their arms in half and proceed forward to the launching bays.

Behind you, Vivian calmly coordinates the attack. Most of the Strike Eagles and Super Hornets have launched, but they're not up to par with the Cerberus group's Typhoons. You pay just enough attention to your HUD to see Elaine charge through the enemy formation and make a straight line for the Nimitz.

You slash at the carrier's aircraft catapult, rendering it inoperable, and swerve just in time to avoid a hail of gunfire from another Raptor. You circle around the Raptor, then use your boosters to shoulder ram it into the Nimitz' bridge tower. The Raptor's pilot responds by hitting its afterburners at full power and pushing you back. You pity anyone who happened to be going up the tower's stairs.

You easily pivot out of the way and slash at the Raptor as it rushes past you. You chase after it and slice off the assault cannon pylons mounted on its back. You expected the pilot to go after you with his remaining assault cannon, but he drops it and leaps away, drawing his Raptor's combat dagger.

He holds it towards you, waiting.

I figured it would, based on interpreting

as being "Merlin is a unitasker" rather than "multitasking is fine as long as it all fits within the same skillset".

A remote shut-down also gives away the fact that we're in their systems, which is a thing we very much don't want them to know.

It's one dude, and we've got reinforcements inbound. Stick it out.

Get that Boss exp if we go for the duel! Also, this guy is asking for it.

According to your tactical network, there are no more operational TSFs on deck. There might be more in the Nimitz' hangar, but it's unlikely they'll be launching any time soon. With the amount of damage the bridge took, the carrier's command structure must be a mess.

"What's the status of the battle?"

'I still have full access to enemy systems,' Merlin informs you.

"The Americans have taken substantial losses, but we're still at full strength," Vivian says. "With the information we're getting on enemy movements, there's not much they can do."

"Good, good." You pause. "Hey, Vivian, you always wanted to see a duel, right?"

"This isn't what I had in mind, but I'll take it."

You can't see her expression, but you're sure she's smirking.

Well, it's going to be intense, at the very least.

...we're not going to be able to pass this off as trying to put on an exciting show, are we.

You drop your left sword so you use both your hands to hold your remaining weapon. Dual wielding is good for killing Tank-class BETA, but right now you need power and agility for a single decisive blow.

Your finger hovers over the trigger and you strain to keep your foot on the pedal without actually pushing it. This isn't a fight where you can callously charge in. If the opponent reads your movements correctly and comes up with a counter, you'll die. Whoever's piloting that Raptor is probably thinking the same thing.

Then it happens. You can't tell which one of you pulled the trigger first, but you're both charging at each other across the carrier's deck.

You come at the Raptor with a wide overhead swing. Your sword is aimed at his centre-line, but that's not what you're going for. You could cut right through his head, but it would halt your momentum and prevent a killing strike. You need to go for a diagonal slash along his shoulder, but you need to hold off on picking a side to cut from until you're certain he won't be able to defend.

With less than 30 metres between the two of you, you tilt your sword's angle towards his left, the side that's not holding a combat dagger. You bury your sword in the Raptor's shoulder, severing its arm, and keep going right for the cockpit, but suddenly, the Raptor surges forward. It's a small jump forward of a few meters, but it's enough to dull your sword's blow. You reached the cockpit, but you couldn't go all the way through.

The Raptor, however, has found its reach. Its combat dagger slipped through the flank you'd left exposed from your high flash and is now buried deep in your engine.

Welp, gg folks. It was a nice quest.

Your TSF's main systems shut down, leaving only the backup systems. Fortunately, that's enough to keep Merlin operational.

'The engine has suffered catastrophic damage. It will need to be replaced before the Excalibur is combat-ready again.'

"Good thing we were going to replace it anyway." You lean back and sigh. "What's the latest on the battle."

"It's a complete victory on our side," Vivian says. "According to comm chatter, the submarines are pulling back and the Nimitz's crew is waiting to surrender, including the remaining TSF pilots."

It's a good start for you.

G'night, ReverseChomp. Thanks for running.

Also,
>- Defeated Alfred Walken in a duel.
Through the clever tactic of shutting down completely and being at his mercy.
>>
>>32519332
Nah, his Raptor is wrecked more badly.

Defeated, not killed?

>>32519301
Thanks for running a bit longer then you normally do. Get some sleep and see you next time.

>>32519443
I hope not, Walken is a pretty cool dude, one of the few amricans that are not cartoon levels of villainous

also good thing it want a russain carrier
>>
>>32519374
I hope he's still alive. h'es not a bad fellow he just works for a bunch of malevolent idiots.
>>
I don't know about his chances. Didn't our sword gut his TSF in the cockpit? It said it didn't go through all the way, but once its in there, its not really hard to imagine him being impaled on the business end either.
>>
>>32519722
He pulsed his engines and stopped us from cutting through the cockpit.
