Ah, to hell with it, you can do CUTE and CLASSY at the same time! You ransack your closets and make a few adjustments and slice up a few things, and put together a few others, and you manage to come up with something unique. It's a pretty silk kimono-style blouse with long sleeves in elegant black with turquoise peonies shading into darker blue bats; the sleeves are long but not too flared at the ends. Rather than an actual obi you have a soft silver sash with blue embroidery at the ends, and a tight little black silk skirt that isn't too long or too short. It has blue edging so it matches the newly created blouse nicely. Black flat sandals and black satin tabi make the outfit perfect. You can't wear sunglasses, it would be ridiculous looking, but you can definitely take an umbrella. You can never tell where you'll end up any given day, so you have outfits for every occasion! And shoes for every occasion! It makes the other girls jealous, but you claim it's part of your hoard, even though that's a Westerner's conceit.

Funny, no one seems to argue against that.

You do slip your wakizashi into ~Nowhere~ so that you aren't completely at the mercy of anyone and anything that bothers you. You look around. Supernatural creatures exist outside human senses and knowledge. Partial supernaturals, like you, Akari, and most of your siblings and cousins exist sort of under the radar, but when you have to pull out all the stops you can make a Barrier. While you're in a Barrier, you can let loose, but anything you break or destroy will suffer repercussions in the real world, eventually. It might take moments, or it might take years, but the spiritual destruction creates real destruction eventually, though not always on the same scale.

The two biggest problems are: One, since the oni-chick created the barrier, you have to find an edge and break out; you can't get out any other way unless she drops it entirely. Two, she's riding a cloud, but she said she was taking the rain somewhere, and she's carrying drums. So she can't make rain herself, but she's still riding a cloud. That means she's a Void Oni. While you're not weak to Void, you're not strong against it either; she does have a slight edge in that she has some control over water obviously, but that can work in your favor too.

But those drums mean she's got lightning, and that's bad news for anyone that isn't born of Fire.

Your Pearl pulses, and you feel your bones shift slightly, your ribs popping and your breastbone cracking in two as the thumbnail sized, glossy, perfect blue-black pearl slides from it's hiding place to just below the hollow of your throat. Your nails shimmer, lengthening slightly, you tail slides out from under your skirt to twist in the air slowly, and you feel your feet lift off the ground slightly – you're still land-bound, but you no longer touch the earth at all.

You feel your eyes cloud over and become depthless pools of shimmering blue radiance. It doesn't hurt – quite the opposite, you feel calm, beatific, cool. The umbrella falls to the ground and the oni stares at you, as though just now becoming aware she's made a terrible, terrible mistake.

There is no wind in a Barrier – there is no wind in the spirit world. Except when it is created, called, summoned. Water does not move in a Barrier, it is still and calm and motionless. Except when commanded. Your hait lengthens to it's full eight feet, the wind stroking, playing in it, your pearl gleams wetly, and the water lying placid on the ground starts to pool in mid air, coalescing and shimmering. Winds start to emerge, sliding out of the hidden places, whipping the oni's hair wildly, tearing bits and pieces of her cloud and consuming them. The sunless sky goes dark and stormy, and the oni bares her teeth, her green eyes wide with fright.

She whips the taiko sticks against the drums, building a rapid crescendo, but it is too late – you are already lifting your hands high, your claws glittering in the glare of your burning eyes.

She whips the sticks out towards you, arcs of yellow lightning leaping through the air towards you as she drums up the power of the Void into the spirit world. The asphalt you stand above turns to tar and boils, the street lamps explode in fiery showers and molten glass, the power of lightning – not electricity, this is the substance that electricity was named after, the archetype of all electrical power – searing lines across your skin and burning your muscles.

Her fragile shield shatters under the impact of the black tide that rises from the earth, the freezing ocean depths rising at your call to lay waste. She tries to cry out but the barrier is entirely filled – there is no air here, only the coldest depth of the deepest abyss. The cloud dissolves, and the large drums implode as the depths crush the magic that created them. Yui clutches her sticks and bangs the ends together, but the reverberating shockwave hardly makes any impact in the air-less depths.

The foolish oni struggles for a few seconds more, then her back arches as she spasms, the air bursting from her lungs in huge bubbles. She immediately thrashes, drowning.

You're not too badly burned, just some deep red marks on your skin under your clothing for the most part (except a couple of stripes along one thigh), and your clothing will be fine. Mostly what you feel right now is fuckin' TIRED.

Holy crap, you had no idea Barrier fights would do this to you. Your hands are shaking and you can barely stand...and you have literally burned off a third of your life force. You're regain it quickly enough, in a day or two, but if you'd gone the full four movements of a Barrier fight -only gods and true dragons can manage five – you're not even sure you'd be freakin' conscious!

Kurao Yui, on the other hand, is lying very still on the ground in a pool of water, her taiko sticks lying next to her hands, her drums waterlogged and ruined.

You run over to the oni-girl and kneel next to her, feeling the Barrier start to collapse without her will to hold it in place. Laying a hand on her chest – no, not her breast, her chest – you start to lean over but even that light touch causes water to spill from her nose and mouth, as though there is no air in her at all!

If you were any other element, panic might have overwhelmed your good sense, but you hold your hand over her face, and lift up, pulling the water from her lungs, her throat, her stomach, and cast it aside. When she doesn't start breathing immediately, there's only one thing to do.

You didn't think you would be giving an oni your first kiss, but you take a deep breath, and press your lips to hers, pinching her nose shut. You breathe into her lungs, filling them, letting not just air flow from you but a tiny measure of your own life force. She was stupid, rude, even cruel, but she doesn't deserve to die.

You repeat the gift of life, her lips soft, your breath, you life filling her lungs, her heart....

She coughs, weakly, and you lean back, watching her start to breathe on her own.

That was a hell of a first kiss.

Yui blinks slowly, looking up at you, her pupils huge, her breaths shallow.

She recoils slightly, though not much because her head' on the freaking pavement. “And you got my first kiss too.” you want to say something more but the expression on her face stops you from laying into her further or even making her apologize for her insult. .

Her cheeks slowly turn more and more red, deeper than her softly ruddy skin color, and her eyes start to squeeze shut, and her lip quivers.

….oh, crap.

She curled up against you, and you can't really stop yourself from gathering her into your arms as she starts to bawl like a freakin' baby. And she clings to you like one, holding onto you for dear life. You pat her back and sigh, and she's very soft despite being an oni, who are mostly just muscle (no really, they are almost made entirely out of muscle). “There there....” You pat her and she slowly stops crying, wet, cold, and looking more like a half dead, half drowned rat than a half dead, half drowned oni.

Barrier fights are not terribly common.

On a smaller scale, they;'re much more like your trainign fights. When a deadly insult is used, or you really must kick ass, you can create a Barrier and start a true battle: the first for selections
[] Razor Wit.
[] Scales and Claws.
[] Storm and Wind.
[] Style and Sword.
Determine the style you will fight with. You are them presented with four choices, three choices, two choices, and then a final, killing or fatal attack. If you unequivocably win at any point, one of your choices becomes an end of battle choice and one becomes a permanent end to your opponent (sort of...).

Keep in mind, that the elemental forces matter! Against Void you are almost evenly matched. You chose very hard hitting concepts and forms to fight with, and overwhelmed poor Yui (and yes, you shared your life-force with her - she is yours.).

Against Stone, you will not do so well at all; agaisnt Fire you will have overwhelming power. BUT, they can still win if they are clever or much, much stronger - you're just barely an adult by your kind's standards, and tryign to take on Uncle Ginsu the Fire Dragon-kin would get you curbstomed.

It is possible to kill a god, but it is almost impossible. Each attack uses a portion of your life force. 4 will almost certainly leave most half-spirits near unconsciousness. a god gets 5 because he can draw off of what he has ties to, and that makes him much,l much more powerful.

Ryukusa isn't going to fight a true god....though a demigod isn't out of the question.

Oni are slightly special case. Indentured servitude is part of their social structure. That said, if you overpower a half-breed totally in a Barrier fight, there are other options aside from killing (Entomb in the Ocean Depths, for instance, binds them and entombs them, and when you release them, they are your devoted and nearly will-less servant nigh-forever). It's not a nice thing to do to someone, and you can piss off many many people by doing it. But it is possible.

By and large most other situations it's the Japanese concept of indebtedness. You defeat them, they're in your debt.

The floral names of her attacks are actually very descriptive as to what happens in her case. This was not just anon's first Barrier fight, it was Ryukusa's as well. Getting into barrier fights is DANGEROUS even if you win, in case I didn't make it obvious enough. Half spirits aren't meant to use the powers of true spirits, gods, and demons.

BARRIER COMBAT

Ryukusa has four selections when dealing with Barrier Combat. Each selection is essentially a method of how she attacks and defends herself. They are all based around her element of Water - Dangerous, penetrating, clever, and deep.

Physical attacks are nothing compared to the malicious words and cruel thought. Pain and suffering are meaningless when you have no heart.
