As I scramble to throw my clothes on as fast as I can, I mutter every swear word I know... Somehow I managed to sleep in until TEN FREAKING THIRTY, and now I'm super late for school!

...screw it, there's no sense in racing straight there, I'm already late as it is. After doublechecking to make sure that I have all of my books and homework and that kind of thing, I swing my backpack around and make for the long way.

After I finish writing out the address of the vet's office, I do the same for the plate that she just said. SPDBRKR... "Speedbreaker?" At least it's easy to remember.

With that issue dealt with, I spend the rest of our lunchtime in the library asking Mina about what's happened in school before I came in. Me and Mina have all the same classes together (thanks to some schedule manipulation on both of our ends), so it's not too difficult for me to get caught up with the stuff I missed.

Luckily, nothing of particular interest happened, aside from one of the boys at gym class farting for like a minute straight when he got knocked over during warmups.

I'm really glad that I wasn't around to suffer through that.

With that done with, the two of us make sure to clean up before we head to our next class. We don't want to get on the librarians' bad side, after all.

"Ugh, next class is trig," I say, slumping onto Mina's shoulder. That's like my absolute worst subject, and I die a little every time I take a test in that class.
"Quit whining, it's not like you don't always copy my homework in that class as it is," Mina says as she pushes me off of her.
"It still sucks, though," I reply. "Stupid state education standards..."

I know I'm whining I do not care. With low spirits, the two of us make it to the classroom and head to our seats at the side of the classroom by the window.

"Cecile," Mina places her bag on her desk, "are you -sure- I can't convince you not to read the book before me?"
"Nope," I give her my sternest frown. "What's done is done and my mind shall not be hanged."
"No fair..."
"Book?" a voice calls out from behind me. "What are you two reading now?"

I turn around to see who it is, and it's exactly who I was expecting- our classmate Theresa.

She used to hang out with me and Mina all the time, but then she joined the track team and we kind of drifted apart because they practiced so often... she had to quit at the end of last year when she broke her leg, but we never really became close again.

Mostly because Mina seems to have a grudge against her for something, but I try to stay out of stuff like that.

Luckily, I manage to survive to the end, and the last two classes of the day are actually to my liking so I don't suffer too much from that. I do get the stink-eye from a teacher whose class I missed thanks to my oversleeping, though... I'm definitely going to have to explain myself tomorrow.

I guess I might as well head home. I'm pretty sure that package that Allison was talking about is the book that Mina bought, and I do want to make sure that I read the whole thing before I hand it over to Mina. But I do feel kind of bad for Theresa, too...

With nothing else to do, I head on home... and as expected, Allison is nowhere to be seen. After tossing my backpack on a chair, I walk over to the kitchen table and pick up the package that arrived earlier.

"The address... I've never even heard of that country before," I say out loud. "And the price... holy crap she spent THAT MUCH on this!?"

One hundred.

And seventy dollars.

On a book that she bought on a whim from an impossibly shady site on the internet that doesn't even exist anymore. What the hell is wrong with her, of course her father would freak out on her if he saw this! Hell, -I- want to tell her off for wasting this much money!

With a sigh of total exasperation, I open up the packaging and slide the book out of it and onto the table... This thing doesn't even seem to have a title, just a blank blank cover with a weird picture of a tree on it.

At least it's hardcover. It had damned well better be, considering how much Mina spent on it.
