You are Tucker Keating, Terran and Flight Leader of the Galactic Union Star Ship Galileo's Victor 2 wing. Or you were up until one week ago. One week ago you handed in your resignation after the handling of your last after action inquisition. GU Tac Com intentionally supplied you with faulty intelligence during a raid on a pirate outpost. Nothing is right about that mission, the spooks told you your route without any input from your CO and the load outs weren't right for that kind of mission. You deviated from the fight plan and saved the lives of your squadron, though in doing so you disobeyed the orders of your Squadron Commander, causing dissention.

That's what it says in the official report anyway. Whether out of principle, the fact that your target got away or out of the simple fact that you fucked up a spook's plans, the inquisition quickly turned its eyes on you. Quickly the tired looks on your comrades faces from the constant interrogation took its toll, and you agreed to a dishonourable discharge.

It's currently 11am and you're a dishevelled mess. You've been drinking since then, hiding in a dingy little apartment you rented on the outskirts of the Hong Kong CBD. You're passed out on a couch, your feet hanging over the side of the arm rest, your clothes stained mess, smelling of bourbon. A bottle of which you have clutched to your chest.

Suddenly the door buzzer goes off. The sound is like a thousand song birds singing a beautiful chorus while they tear out your ears with their little talons. It disturbs you, but you're adamant in your decision to stay put. You manage to keep your position for the first few rings, but suddenly the person who wishes to pull you away from your wallowing starts using the buzzer to play a melody.

"Alright." You call out as you get to your feet, which make a cacophony of sound as they come into contact with the seemingly hundreds of beer bottles . "I'm coming."

You wipe your hand across your chin, lightly stubbled after a week of neglect, and tousle your sandy brown dishevelled hair in a vain attempt to get it tidy as you shuffle towards the door with a vague murderous intent behind each step. You're still clutching the neck of your bottle of bourbon as you reach for the door and open it.

There in the alcove is Daveth the Lucky, your navigator, well, up until a week ago. You're slightly surprised to see him, you've not gone out of your way to do so, but you mainly used cash to move around. But despite this, a part of you is glad to see him.

He has slightly tanned skin on his humanoid face with white scales that run down its sides, disappearing into the collar of his black shirt. The cool February weather has him wearing a white parka in which his hands are hiding. A set of horns poke out of his head and curl backwards.

He looks back at you with yellow reptilian eyes that burn with repressed intensity and a kind smile until he gets a whiff of your sent.

"Whoa, you reek something terrible mate!" he teases as he wafts his hand in front of his face. "I was going to suggest lighting a match, but you'd probably combust."

How do you respond?

[]"Yeah yeah, quit the commentary and get inside."
[]Eye him down and take a swig of your bourbon; it's too early for this shit.

You stare at him as you lift the bottle to your lips and take a swig of your drink. There's some solace in the thought that it will take the edge off the hangover. It's fleeting.

"So, you look... well." The dragon says awkwardly.

"I'm taking some me time." You reply as you force an empty smirk.

Daveth's expression became genuinely concerned "And how's that working out for you?" He said as he folded his arms.

You take a swig of your bourbon and a quick pause before you respond. "It's not so bad. If I get really lonely I can just walk down to the local dive and pick up a nekomata in heat."

You drop the act for a second and sigh heavily. "Look man, you don't need to feel guilty about anything -"

"Shut up mate." Daveth said with a wave of his hand and a smile "If the Navy thought I is sticking around after that mess, they've got another thing coming."

This causes you to manage a genuine smile "So then, the tavern you were always talking about? On some tropical planet out in Kepler Phi?"

Daveth shifted his footing "Ah well-" he hesitated, his eyes wandering before looking back at you with a smile "I don't feel like settling down yet. Besides-" His eyes lit up "Other things have come up."

The dragon stepped back and nodded towards the door "Go have a shower and get dressed. Smart. I'm taking you out."

[]"What's this all about?"
[]"Yeah, maybe later." Turn around and lay back down on the sofa

"Alright, give me a second."

You have a shower and clean yourself off. You still feel like ass but after a shave and a clean set of clothes you look halfway presentable. After putting on a bit of after shave you head on out.

Though the rest of Earth and indeed most of the core worlds were run by a socialist system, most of them retained a port where corporations that operated in the free market could maintain an outpost and trade with the Galactic Union. It is a sort of strange system where the corporations would build up a world, and as growth started to level off the GU would step in and "Lock it down". Both had their positives and negatives, in the Free Worlds you kept what you earned but inequality is rife, in the GU taxation is high but a lot of your amenities were provided for. Free Worlds and Territories tended to attract the more enterprising kind, and so corps and the PMCs they hired for protection tended to be better equipped than their GU counterparts.

For Earth the bastion of that combination of inequality and progress is Hong Kong, the skyline littered with towering, silver, monolithic tributes to free enterprise, the street just outside your apartment complex littered with market stalls. The majority of the people you see are human, but there are still quite a few different monsters and aliens of all shapes and sizes trading with the assorted merchants, all with assorted text languages on their banners but for the most part Cantonese.

This doesn't even earn more than the passing glance from you as you follow your draconic friend. You've grown up with these creatures all your life, you've served with them, it's just another day in the galaxy.

You follow Daveth down some stairs into a Metro station line that will take you to Aberdeen, the location of the Star Port. The magrail train comes to a halt, the doors open allowing people and sapient creatures to leave. You step on. A woman beside you reaches into her bag and grabs a small aerosol which she then proceeds to spray on her legs, which on inspection appears to not be legs, but octopus like tentacles.

Finally you step off and climb up the metro stairs to a vastly different scene than the one outside your apartment. The dress of the people here are much more professional, the streets are pristine and each street corner has a couple of guards, clad head to toe in advanced armour. Normally a single giant troll coupled with a single lithe harpy, the harpies feathers sticking out of their armour the only thing adding colour to the ensemble. They each carried a rife and causally scanned the crowd. A few were talking to each other, joking and gossiping while they guarded the people on the ground.

Daveth leads you to the most heavily guarded building, Dedalus Galactic Defence Services. You start to form some questions in your mind, but they are all put aside the second when you see the Silver Kitsune hanging out in front of the door to the building. You know her as Erika Tarasovna, she is, was your Squadron Commander. She is an incredibly attractive woman, with short shiny silver hair, silver foxy ears and a fluffy silver tail which telegraphed her emotions at the most inopportune times. Her skin is quite fair, and she covered it with a black turtleneck and the white vest of the GU light body armour, only it is missing its GU insignia.

[cont]

>>32606633

Seeing her invokes a few emotions. She's been your rival throughout your career and in your honest opinion is a better pilot than you. But healthy rivalry is fine, what you're really feeling right now is that resentment you've been brewing through your alcoholic binge. The fact that she froze up on mission, the fact that she nearly got you all killed, the fact that she reamed your ass out for it after the fact.

She approaches you with her normal confident gait, but her tail unconsciously wraps itself around her leg.

[]Say nothing, but glare at her

You turn to your draconic friend. "What is this? Some kind of reconciliation. What are you playing at Dave?"

Daveth turns to you to speak, taking a breath with a wide and bemused smile but is interrupted by the Vulpine and turns his attention to her.

"Listen, Tucker..." She hesitated, something she rarely did. She looks away, bruising her short fringe across her forehead before regaining her confidence and looking back "I froze out there, I is freaking out a little... quite a lot actually. You took over when it counted and made right decision. We would all be dead if not for you. It should have been me to make that call and to take the heat. I am sorry."

You let of a bit of that resentment and sigh "Look, we can't change the past, but at the same time..." you hesitate "I went from my gut, you went from yours, I just happened to be right..." You smirk to inwardly a little "and louder."

Daveth tugs at you by your shirt's sleave to guide you forward, politely smiling at Erika as the pair of you pass. Your eyes linger on her as your coaxed away, but she doesn't she looks down and sighs heavily with a kind of relief. Your eyes wander down and linger on her fantastically toned ass as your coaxed inside the DGDS building.

The insides contrast the outside, the reception area is warmly decorated with beige as the primary colour, black secondary and a crimson as a trim. There are some panels on the wall with pictures of DGDS ships and military actions, advertising both recruitment and services. There are a few guards casually walking around or hanging by little lounge areas, having coffee and talking while their visors were removed. Daveth approached the receptionist who is stilling behind a black garnet reception desk. She is an attractive looking blue gelatinous mass of slime, quite lithe, but if you remember correctly all it would take is a bit of water and she'd be as endowed as you wanted her to be, just taping away at a glowing holoterminal.

Daveth doesn't give you any time to linger on these emotions as he addresses the woman.

"Daveth the Lucky and Tucker Keating, here to see Kovinth the Wise." he points to you over his shoulder with his scaly thumb.

"Of course, one second." She smiles and types some things into her terminal, "Miss Kovinth? Your 12pm is here." She nods once "Of course." She says before looking back at you "Please stand still for a moment."

In an instant the pair of you are covered in green light as your scanned for weapons and bugs. As it fades you see the slime pull a couple of visitor cards out of her desk.

"Wear these at all times and do explore beyond floor 299 and the ground floor." she says as she hands them to you.

"Understood. Thank you ma'am." he said formally, his military background showing through.

>We better get some free food

"So... nice weather."

Daveth simply gives you a smile. "Seriously mate, relax and trust me."

You eye him for a moment, "Now... look man, I know we've known each other for a long time, but. How do I say this..." You say semi seriously

"What mate?"

You look him dead in the eye "Look, if this is all an elaborate plot to finally get all that sexual tension we've got going out of your system, I want dinner first."

Daveth Laughs incredulously "What the fuck are you on about mate."

"Just... if you want to take your scaly dragon dick and fuck me in the ass... just... I expect to be wined and dined first." You say with resignation.

Daveth laughs heavily "You're an idiot."

"You're the one being needlessly cryptic man." You shake your head with a smile "So are you going to fuck me in the ass or not? Did you at least bring lube?" You say with pursed lips.

"Shut up mate," he laughs "we're here" he says ominously

You step forward into the grand chamber, well lit with an elegant decor. The couches and upholstery have an art deco/Victorian resurgence to them with drab, comforting colours. There is a grand piano in one corner of the room and a desk with a behind it woman in the other.

She stands and you can tell from her horns and her red scales that she is a dragon, much like your friend. Unlike your friend she looks a lot older. She walks towards you with a subtle gait that almost makes her look like she's sliding, a red cloak draping behind her along the floor. She smiles mysteriously, as though sizing you up, raising an eyebrow when she gets close enough.

Finally after a long pause she finally speaks.

"They call me Kovinth the Wise, you are Tucker Keating." She bows respectfully before perking up slightly "Would you be interested in some Brandy?"

The interesting take on the greeting gives you pause, must be a dragon thing.

"Uh- no, I'm good thanks." You eye her curiously "Sorry, but can you explain what's going on? Why he's being cryptic." you nod to your friend

"Yes yes." She says dismissively, "You Terrans are always in a rush." She sighs before continuing on quickly "Pirates are threatening my clients in the Caprica sector. Normally this is fine, good for business, my clients are reminded about their need for protection. But this new leader of theirs is smart and cunning. I think you've crossed paths with them recently and were lead into a spot of bother."

You take a second to assimilate that information "You're talking about my recent discharge?" you ask

"You catch on quick for a Terran." she smiles "Thing is, they've got their web, so-to-speak, cast everywhere. I think their planning something bigger, but even if they're not, they're becoming too big of a nuance. I need them gone."

"I still fail to see how I fit in." You state

"I need a captain for a new task force, someone who's capable at command but also good at investigation." The Dragoness sighs dramatically, walking away from you. "Erika, your former Leader, was my first choice, DD's are normally bad for business." She turns back "But after talking to her, I agreed with her that you would be a better choice." She tilts her head slightly "Command of your own ship, relative freedom from oversight, a crew. I'll give them too you. All you have to do is stop the Pirates."

how about we don't go throw our life away to spite the navy and do sign up with the cool mercs

also kind of out of character to go straight to the people we were fighting against, who were trying to kill us...

so no, we ain't going pirates, we gonna be sweet mercs with a bitching harem
>>

Well, as long as we never intend to go anywhere near her shit ever again, that's probably fine.

Yeah I think after getting paid to kill and hunt them, they'd not be very accommodating of us wanting to join them.

sides, we'z gonna be a merc, the legal pirates
>>
>>32607764

Indeed you are.

He is referring to how they would not accept us as a pirate or want to deal with us.

fuck me, look at how this stupid retarded idea has derailed shit.

OP, lets get back on track, we've got us a dragon to deal with, a ship to command and a harem to acquire, starting with that delicious Kitsune
>>
You consider the offer for the second. She's offering a lot for nothing. You consider seeing how far you can take deal.

"I take it Erika is part of the deal." you ask without giving away your opinion of her.

"Actually no." the Dragoness replies "She decided to not take any other position with us." She smiles at you "But she would still be a valued member of DGDS. If you can change her mind I see no issue of it."

"What about when we're done? Is the ship mine."

"No, it remains the property of my company. You can purchase it and I have no issues with you doing jobs on the side to pay for it." She says taking a more Kurt tone. "You will be an employee of DGDS, employee to command a ship and her crew."

"What kind of ship am I getting? Weapons, armaments... The other corps on the rim will sell to anyone so I don't know what I'm getting into here." You ask

"I don't know the specifics, but my suppliers are good," she shurgged "Or so I'm told. I relegate technical details to my subordinates. I understand you'll have the latest equipment; DGDS needs to keep it's edge."

That answer didn't exactly fill you with confidence. "What about logistics? We'll need food, water, repairs."

"Again, we're not about to let assets degrade before their time. We're better at this than the GU Navy, you'll soon find that out." The dragoness says with a proud smile

"And I take it Daveth can join my crew, as can Erika."

"That should be clear. Think of it like you're in charge of your own department. You can hire anyone you want, but be careful about who you take on. You can't trust everyone, and some will simply be a drain on resources."

"Alright" You say with a firm nod. "Sounds good to me."

"Great. I just need you to do one thing before that." She added

"Wait... what?"

"You think I'd just hand over a ship like that to someone who was just DDed, on the word of one person? Who also happens to have a rather large guilt complex at the moment." She said with a smirk.

"This isn't an ordinary patrol run, that's why I'm hiring. I need to make sure you're the right man for the job. You have a place in this company, I just need to be sure I'm not handing a loaded cannon to an infant."

The Dragon laughs and sighs "Child, I am very old." she says with a patronising bite to her words. "In my time I've learnt one thing; that people lie. Sometimes they don't even know that they lie, or that they think it's harmless." She takes a breath and her tone becomes more even, though you still get the feeling that she's talking to you like a child "I need to see for myself."

You pause for a second, taking that all that in. Swallowing your pride you nod "Alright, fair point."

"Though" You add curiously "If I am a child, I still have a place here? That's what was implied."

The woman nods with a smile "Most of my force is made from children holding guns. You just don't want to give them anything too big." Her smile grows wider "You'll see what I mean."

Another cryptic statement. You shake your head. "Alright, what's the task to prove I'm not a child?."

"Oh, yes." She said as though she was completely somewhere else. "There is a valuable woman here in Hong Kong. A Lamia by the name of Rene Beaumont. Her parents are some wealthy clients from theta six or... somewhere. She's clever and worth a lot. If you can acquire her I'll be more confident about giving you a multibillion credit ship."

"What, like Kidnap!?!"

"No, nothing of the sort. She's fell in with some bad people and her parents want her back." She shakes her head "What do you take me for."

Where did Rene like to hang around?
How well-armed are these guys I'm going up against?

All she's said so far is "here's a test. acquire this girl."

If she expects us to take a move solely on that information I've high doubts on that info.

But yeah, we can grill an underling about it if we're getting more details on that more than simply accepting the mission on that basis.

It's a very strange test already - we're a flight leader, not a spec-ops soldier. A particularly dim-witted individual might take a "test" on orders of this dragon and go kidnap this girl, and then get arrested for it while bleating on "the dragon told me to do it! THE DRAGON TOLD ME TO DO IT!!!"

Asking for further details is only reasonable as a competent commander.

We can ask her who to go to for a full briefing, but expecting busy dragon businesslady to give it herself is dumb.
>>
>>32608562
Well, though we'll probably ask it from an adjutant, here's the reasonable list of questions to ask about this operation:

1: What's the aim of the mission? Get the girl back alive, or get the girl back willingly?

2: Who's the opposing force? Junkies and criminals, or nerd hackers, or a military force? What's the problem with retrieving her with a good mail asking her to come home?

3: What's the ideal method of going about rescuing this person? Diplomacy's likely not what you would come to me with.

3: What's allowed in terms of collateral damage? Will the death of enemy combatants be considered murder under law and treated as extrajudicial murder? Who will be paying for collateral damage? How badly do you want this girl?

4: What assets do I have to utilise? Do I have a squad to instruct and material to arm them with,

4: Am I getting paid for this? Or rather, I'd like to get it in writing that completion of this mission within the above parameters will get me a position in the company.

"I just wanted to clarify what I was doing. This is all new to me." You say modestly

"Good." The Dragoness says with a nod before she steps back and speaks to the room "Harriet, you can come in now."

The call to the room seemingly summoned one of the commando harpies you saw on the streets moments ago. Her helmet covers her face, but you can see brown feathers peeking out from under her armour shiny black armour.

She nods gracefully "You called mistress?"

The Dragoness looks back at you "This is Captain Harriet Sanders. She'll help you further and get you equipped."

You look over your shoulder to the armour clad bird girl who gives you a quick nod, although it's hard to make out her reaction behind her mask. "Hi, Tucker Keating." you say offering your hand.

She reaches out with her right wing and takes the outside of her hand with her talon, gently, though the oddness of the action takes you back a bit.

"Harriet, sweet heart." The dragon lady says kindly "Helmet, let the man get a look at your face."

"Oh, right, sorry!" she says with a slight giggle. With a tilt of her head the helmet folded away to revile her face. She has a massive brown plume of feathers on her head was pushed back. You would think it would look like hair from a distance. She has wide yellow eyes that look like a hawks and actually makes her look kind of cute.

She offers out her talon again.

"Other one dear." The dragon lady says again.

"Oh" she says as she retracts her talon and offers the other one with a beaming smile.

"I don't see why you need to hire new staff, you've got a ringer right here." you say rolling your eyes.

"Harriet has a very specific set of skills. She's a dragoon, not an expert in etiquette."

The bird-girl turns around and waves at Daveth who is hanging in the elevator alcove. "Hey Dave" she whispered loudly, who responds with a smile and a wave back.

You eye her for another moment. "And she'll help me with this task?"

"Everything we know about the target, she knows. She'll also get you clearance to our weapons locker should you need." The Dragon says with a smile "Now leave me, you have all you need."

Able to do little else, you head off, back to the elevator with the bird and your dragon friend in toe.

"So you want to go get some guns?" Harriet asks with a smile

"I guess." you shrug "And on the way you can tell me about the target."

"Oh, I know about her." Harriet says as she presses a key in the elevator

"Okay, so what can you tell me?" You ask diplomatically.

She places a claw from her right wing up to her temple as she recalls the information. "Rene Beaumont, criminal charges of data theft, grand larceny and money laundering, heiress to Beaumont Heavy Industries, whom DGDS has extensive contracts with. She has a wide array of contacts but is generally up for hire, her contacts here are unknown, but she's liable to be in with the lower class civilians."

"Wait, she's an heiress to a mega corp?" Daveth interjected with suprise

"Yup!" Harriet chirped with a smile

"Odd isn't it?" He says looking at you.

Harriet looks back at you "I don't think it's going to be easy getting her back, she likes to shoot at us when we hunt her, and we've been told that we have to cage her up and drag her home!"

"Know why?" you ask.

"Nope, but I don't like cages, so maybe she's like me!" She smiles

You turn to look at the smug dragon who seems to be having way too much fun "I hope you're having fun back there."

"You've got the stick mate, I'm just along for the ride."

You give him a forced laugh before looking back at Harriet

"You said 'when' you hunt her. I take it this happens often?"

"Not me personally." she clarifies "And we've had a few run-ins with her. We're not sure how many, record keeping is tough out in the Free Worlds."

The elevator comes to a halt and you step out into a pristine white hallway, almost like a clean room. Harriet leads the way with a confident stride, leading you to a fully stocked armoury. Every weapon conceivable is there; pistols, long bore rifles, assault rifles, sub machine guns, shot guns, even larger weapons that you couldn't hope to carry. All in three different flavours of plasma, rail gun or chemical ballistic.

"Mistress said pick anything you want, aside from the explosive weapons." she said, opening her wings to direct you in "Mistress says that "in Hong Kong, we're a police force, not a military." Good thing I don't come here often." She beams

"Been a while since I've had to use a fire arm." Daveth says "I think it was a year since our last refresher."

Holdout pistol for when we need to hose the room. Rifle for when shit hits the fan and a werewolf in a tank walks around the corner.

Reflex sights on the rail gun, basic iron/holographic sights on the pistol. No point in getting it snagged if we want it drawn in a hurry.

In an urban environment we have poor backstop for high damage weapons, and will only be using a railgun on very hard targets indeed. At least a pistol slugthrower shouldn't go through walls.

Laser bayonet; a layman's term for the Burst Impact Laser Device; attached to the front of a weapon for troops that required a means of piercing heavy armor and doing massive damage to the machinery or flesh inside;

The device is a relatively simple one, a high powered laser feeding into a fully sealed reflector chamber, which builds until the required intensity. On striking the target with the device, the end of the reflector triggers, releasing the entire laser charge at once - used in atmosphere the thermal shock is rated to cut through initial layers of armor before the light energy is absorbed by whatever material is behind, leading to rapid thermal expansion and in the case of power armor, frequently the death of the target.

The swift dropoff effect of a laser in an atmosphere means that the effective range of the charge is quite low, only reaching several meters before the loss of energy to the air renders it useless against armor, leading to suicidally close ranges required to use this device; though it is also rated highly as a room-cleaner against non-armored individuals in less reputable circles.

tl;dr you hit someone with a shaped laser charge.

Plasma Pistol won (just)
(Naked)
Kinda think of it like a Desert Eagle.
As a consolation prize to the guys who wanted chemical for very logical reasons it looks like Deckers gun from Blade Runner.

Rail AR won primary
-Two round burst even though it's baffling to me, but I shan't stand in the way of true love.
-Scope is hybrid, because they have those now and this is supposed to be the future so why not, unless major objections
-Plasma Bayonet (Use sparingly, limited fuel, will drain the capacitors for magnets.)
>>32609549
actually alright, that's cool, we'll go with that one. kind of like underslung shotgun... but with LASERS!

Daveth got the inverse of your weapons, so he grabbed a Ballistic Pistol and a Rail Shotgun.

We're we allowed to add Mods to our Pistol as well?

If so, I kinda wanted a tac-light, and shoulder/speed holster.

And for the AR.
A fucking grenade launcher is way better as an under barrel attachment than a fuckin' bayonet.

Advanced reflex/holographic sights; used in close combat situations, these sights link into either eye implants or worn HUD systems - they project and trace out the line of fire that the gun will shoot in, calculating whether it will pass behind targets or hit them.

This is shown as a laser that will indicate where it will strike on a target, highly useful from firing from the hip.

If the weapon is brought into a firing position the laser will appear as a dot when aiming down the sights.
>>
>>32609653
We're in an urban environment, we can get guns for boarding actions later.

Honestly, I was just describing a laser bayonet for fun rather than actually wanting to use it, but eh, not too bothered.

Really, I'd take some flashbangs instead - grenade launcher is just going to get our target killed and won't do too much against heavily armoured enemies.

Not every single projectile from grenade launcher has to be lethal or necessarily have an area of effect. There are a large number of variants of ammunition a grenade launcher can fire and is much more versatile that a bayonet in the long run.

Flares, Smoke, Gas, Rubber, White Phosphorous, Fragmentation, High Explosive, and more can be fired from a grenade launcher. Plus with this setting there might even be more crazier shit that a grenade launcher could fire.

And if we are getting the bayonet for the sole reason of heavy targets, I think we should really consider alternative forms of weaponry than the one that requires use to go fuckin' toe to toe with said heavily armored targets.

I mean bayonets are cool, but logically, another attachment more versatile attachment would be better in serving us that a niche weapon like a bayonet.

I thought the three round burst was to compensate for the dip in the trajectory over time and reduce the training time for those who don't get gravity. An extra bullet is an extra chance.

Light armor, you're basically deputised into the local police force. Heavy armor has servos and other stuff and needs to be specially fitted.

>And if we are getting the bayonet for the sole reason of heavy targets, I think we should really consider alternative forms of weaponry than the one that requires use to go fuckin' toe to toe with said heavily armored targets.

Honestly, the bayonet's not a good idea here, even if I thought up the mechanism behind it. We're taking the rail rifle for anti-armor work, the bayonet is overkill against criminal arms. Grenade launcher is in fact probably a better idea, though I'd consider the fact that you'd have to trust we put the right grenades in first (unless it's a multiple magazine with microgrenades or something cool).

>>

>An extra bullet is an extra chance
That is absolutely not the reasoning behind the Abakan's 2-round mode.
It fires the second round before the recoil from the first even hits your shoulder. This means that it's actually feasible to put two rounds through the same hole, GREATLY increasing effectiveness versus body armour.
>>
>>32609803
A high rate of fire three-round burst theoretically allows for greater effect on target. The G11 can fire a three round burst and shoot every round before the user feels recoil.

Most of the time though it's there only so the soldier doesn't waste ammo. Which doesn't really matter anymore since most doctrine has changed to machine guns suppress and rifles use semi-auto only. And that soldiers can be trained better to use auto. Which is why all of the Army's M4s are getting swapped/converted to the full-auto M4A1.
>>
>>32609852
Well, it's true, this weapon will flash-laser a gaping hole in someone, and superheat the air directly behind them leading to first degree burns to you, and if the beam hits a second person they'll effectively explode as their blood and tissues superheat. The stink of overcooked meat and ozone filling the air as little bits of them drip off the wall as the red tinged smoke blooms up around them, moments before the screams begin.

I'm sure no-one would expect the bayonet charge and everyone will be impressed at the amount of overkill you used on a two-bit criminal.

>>32609852
Yeah, because they mere mostly used as last resorts, And were only considered a real first option or second option tactic was during WW1 where tactics with "automatic modern firearms" were very much lacking.

I mean by WW2, bayonet charges were often suicidal shock/last ditch effort tactics. In fact many modern firearms no longer enable the use/attachment of a bayonet (some still do however), and many modern armies discontinued the training of their soldiers in usage of a bayonet (US Army discontinued it in 2010, the Marines still train in it), due to the actual lack of usage of the bayonet in today's modern combat. Hand-to-Hand combat still occurs regularly but, it rarely involves a bayonet.

And one pf the main advantages of a bayonet during it's time of prolific use, was to allow greater reach and range win a melee. But with today's evolution and advancement of weapons, the bayonet is not an ideal choice here for urban/suburban operations.

Note that their bayonet training is also less about technical skills in it's use and more about the psychological side of making the troops more agressive and giving them the mindset of daring to use the bayonet.

It is not like their enemies are likely to have trained parrying bayonet attacks.

Sure, but neither are the criminals/pirates etc we're likely to be taking on. I'll grant you it's as much about training to have the balls to try and charge an emplaced position as it is technical skill at sticking things in dudes, it can be a potent psychological weapon - if a bayonet charge can break Taliban morale, imagine the effect on you're average criminal thug, whose entire thing is being the most intimidating fuck in the room.

>>32610274
Yeah. I prefer the idea of a microgrenade launcher as per >>32609809
said - flashbang, smoke and shrapnel explosive in the barrel, switchable with a three-toggle system - just load up three of each and fire when ready.
>>
>>32610106
And now they discontinued the training of the bayonet, in favor of teaching other skills to their soldiers.

Still does not change the fact that for us, our character, and our situation or in general. A grenade launcher would be better than a bayonet.

>>32610175
Also this so much.

“Traditionally in the 20th century – certainly after World War I – bayonet training was basically designed to develop in soldiers aggressiveness, courage, and preparation for close combat,” says Richard Kohn, professor of military history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Bayonet training is, in short, used to undo socialization – to “basically to try to mitigate or eradicate the reluctance of human beings to kill each other,” Mr. Kohn says. It is one of the challenges in US or Western society “where we have such reverence for the individual, where we socialize our people to believe in the rule of law, and all of that,” he adds. “What you’re doing with young people is trying to get them used to the highly emotional and irrational and adrenaline-filled situations in which they are liable to find themselves whether they are within sight of the enemy or not – and the reluctance to take a life.”

>>32610267
The bayonet charge would be a semi-viable option, if our main objective is to cause our enemy to route and flee. But our objective is to find a girl and get here out, and a crazy wild bayonet charge in close quarters is not really going to help. Better to do just shoot them.

Bayonets do a have a role, but not here, not now.
>>
>>32610383
Which is also why we moved away from shooting bulls eyes to human silhouettes.
>>
>>32610383
>not here, not now.
That I will concede, though I don't thing a grenade launcher would really be any more appropriate for this particular task. I'll still maintain that often breaking the enemy morale is far easier and more desirable than outright killing everyone, so don't dismiss the bayonet out of hand. I didn't actually vote for it myself, but its not a terrible decision.
>>
>>32610450
