You stand before the Priestess of Velya in her office within the Church, your name is Sireyi and you are a Paladin of Velya, the Goddess of Joy, Life, and Peace.
You are 18 years old, a young woman, you have just completed your training and are ready to go out in the world and do some good.
Velya, being a goddess of peace, rarely calls Paladins into her service, indeed you are the only Paladin of Velya currently serving, and it has been many years since Velya last called a Paladin.
Priestess Hapswith takes a seat behind her desk and speaks “sit, sit child, you’ll make me strain my neck by looking up at you.”
You take a seat, wondering what the old woman who has looked after you for so many years wants to say to you.

“Congratulations on finishing your training child, now the really hard work begins. Soon you will leave the town of Silas and go out into the world for whatever tasks Velya has in store for you. But before you do, I think it only right that you take a moment to look back on all that you have done before, to remind yourself who you are.”
“I don’t know what the Goddess has chosen for you” she says “But these are not easy times for our Church. The High Priestesses decision to petition the King for prostitution to be legalised and recognised as an official profession – allowing the madams to found their own guilds and hire official guards to protect their establishments has not been well received – our detractors now call Velya the Goddess of Whores!” Her voice rises in volume before she gets herself under control again and continues in a more normal tone.
“Just because we don’t have the same hide-bound restrictions on love as the other churches, restricting a person to only one lover or to their own race. And just because many of our followers are healers and midwives who will treat anyone no matter their station in life: prince or pauper, noble or whore....”
>>
She trails off, as if realising she’s gotten distracted.
You fidget slightly on your seat, this is all very good but you want to be going out and making a difference!
“Now child” she continues “When you first came to us you had aptitudes for certain things, and others...took a bit of work for you”

Pick Stats:
2 Primary (start at 12)
2 Secondary (start at 10)
2 Tertiary (start at 8, cost extra XP to raise)

Strength- this affects how strong you are- allowing you to perform feats of strength and deal additional damage in melee combat.
Agility. How dexterous and able to dodge you are. It also affects your finesse on delicate work.
Constitution. - How well you can take a hit or how long you can perform physically difficult tasks for.
Intelligence- How smart you are and how well you apply it
Willpower- How well you channel magical energy, and resist it.
Fellowship- How well you get along with and interact with others.

“And of course, you recall your family and how you came to us?” She continues

Your family
>are unknown to you, you were found on the church steps late one night when you were just a babe. You were raised by the church (penalty to social interactions outside of the church, extra divine power – below)
>Solid peasant stock, your parents love you and were overjoyed that you heard the Goddess’ call.
>Solid peasant stock, your parents cursed the day you were born, another useless mouth to feed, you were beaten often and ran away to the church (-1 Fellowship, +1 Willpower).
>Crafters and traders, your parents love you and were overjoyed that you heard the Goddess’ call.
>Crafters and traders, your parents planned to marry you a much older man to secure a lucrative trade deal, you hated him and ran away to join the church, your parents complained that you had been kidnapped and the church had to settle them down by paying them off (+1 Agility, Church is in debt, you feel an obligation to pay this off)
>>
>>33059668
>Rich Merchants, your parents love you and were overjoyed that you heard the Goddess’ call (your starting gear is superior quality, uncommon -1 vote).
>Rich Merchants, your parents planned to marry you off to a minor noble to secure an alliance, at the wedding ceremony you smashed an ornate glass sculpture over his head and ran off to join the church (Enemy: Minor Noble, +1 Willpower).
>Nobles, your parents love you and were overjoyed that you heard the Goddess’ call (your starting gear is superior quality, bonus to social rolls, rare -2 votes).
>Nobles, your parents planned to marry you off to the ruler of a distant land. You ran away and have been dodging attempts from both your family and your husband-to-be to kidnap you (Enemy: Noble Family, Enemy: Foreign Ruler, +1 Intelligence, +1 Agility).
>Royalty, your father is the kings brother, and you’re....somewhere in the line of succession. Your family love you and were happy in a restrained, regal manner when you heard the Goddess’ call (your starting gear is magical, large bonus to social rolls, unheard of -3 votes).
>Royalty, your father is the kings brother, and you’re....somewhere in the line of succession. Your decision to serve the Goddess of Whores did not go down well, culminating in a screaming match between you and your father in full view of the royal court. Your fathers armsmaster always had a soft spot for his most dedicated pupil and broke you out of the tower – the palace guards killed him as he helped you escape. As a paladin of a recognised Church, your father cannot order you arrested, but he has ordered all nobles, royal functionaries, town guards etc to give you no help at all, and the common folk turn away from you, fearing they will be in trouble for aiding you (penalty to social rolls, large penalty to social rolls vs crown employees, +1 Strength, +1 Agility, +1 Constitution)
>>
Some votes are rated
Uncommon -1 vote
Rare -2 votes
Unheard of -3 votes

This represents the rarity of such a thing, when the final votes are tallied, votes will be removed from these options – they are still possible and I will follow the wishes of the players, but a large majority would need to pick these options for them to happen.
>>
And talking about your family
>You’re fully human
>You’ve got a bit of angel far back in the family tree (pick one or both of: Silver hair, gold eyes, uncommon -1 vote)
>You’ve got a bit of demon far back in the family tree (pick one or both of: red eyes, fangs, uncommon -1 vote)
>You’ve got a bit of dragon far back in the family tree (pick one: blue, green, red (really, really red), white, silver, copper, bronze or gold hair – representing the colour of your draconic ancestor, uncommon -1 vote)
>One of your grandparents or great-grandparents was an angel (physical appearance as above, rare -2 votes, +1 Willpower, +1 Fellowship)
>One of your grandparents or great-grandparents was a demon (physical appearance as above, rare -2 votes, +1 Intelligence, +1 Willpower)
>One of your grandparents or great-grandparents was a dragon (physical appearance as above, rare -2 votes, +1 Willpower, +1 Strength)
>One of your grandparents or great-grandparents was a giant (+30% height, rare -2 votes, +1 Strength, +1 Constitution)
>One of your parents was an angel of battle (you look almost like a full angel – flawless looks, silver or gold metallic hair, unheard of -3 votes, +1 Strength, +1 Agility, +1 Constitution, bonus to weapon skills)
>One of your parents was an angel of rulership and nobility (you look almost like a full angel – flawless looks, silver or gold metallic hair, unheard of -3 votes, +1 Fellowship, +1 Willpower, choose either: Wings or an extra divine power – below)
>One of your parents was a demon of violence and destruction (you look almost like a full demon – red skin, claws, fanged maw, unheard of -3 votes, +1 Strength, +1 Agility, +1 Constitution, bonus to melee weapon skills)
>One of your parents was a demon of deceit and lust (you look almost like a full demon – exotic skin, horns and a long dextrous tail, unheard of -3 votes, +3 Fellowship, pick one of: Wings, large bonus to seduction checks)
>>
>One of your parents was a dragon (you look almost like a full dragon, though you are humanoid – scaled skin, claws a tail, and wings, unheard of -3 votes, +1 Strength, +1 Constitution, +1 Willpower, Wings, Pick a breath weapon: Fire, Lightning, Poison Gas, Cold, Acid or Knockout Gas)
>One of your parents was a giant (+60% height, unheard of -3 votes, +2 Strength, +2 Constitution)

“But family isn’t everything” says Priestess Hapswith, raising an admonishing finger “What’s important is how you apply yourself”

During training you displayed a natural talent for
>nothing really (skip section below)
>melee weapons (bonus to melee combat)
>ranged weapons (bonus to ranged combat)
>mounted combat – I mean fighting from horseback, geeze (bonus to fighting whilst fighting on horseback)
>powers of the faith (your divine magic is stronger)
>book learning (bonus to knowledge rolls)
>socialising, it’s party time! (+1 Fellowship)

But you didn’t do so well at
>nothing, I get to skip this section remember?
>melee weapons (penalty to melee combat)
>ranged weapons (penalty to ranged combat)
>mounted combat – I mean falling from horseback, ouch. (penalty to rolls whilst fighting on horseback)
>powers of the faith (your divine magic is weaker)
>book learning (penalty to knowledge rolls)
>socialising, I have no time for distractions (-1 Fellowship)

“And of course” she continues “As we are so rarely blessed by Velya as to have a Paladin called, we had to ask some of the other Churches to help with your training.”
The Church of Konig: God of Warriors, Knights and Paladins, The Church of Mazon: God of Merchants, Trade and Commerce and The Church of Yerra: God of Dragons, Wizards and Sorcerers agreed that you could spend time with their paladin and cleric trainees.”
>>
Eventually, the Church of Velya sent you to train with the knight-aspirants at the Church of Konig, there you
(pick 2, a single option can be chosen twice)
>Trained hard at learning how to fight (+1 Strength)
>Trained hard at learning how to not get hit (+1 Agility)
>Joined every long-distance field exercise you could (+1 Constitution)
>Made a lot of friends (+1 Fellowship)

But it wasn’t all fun. This one time, a particularly arrogant knight-aspirant wouldn’t give you a moments piece, calling you ‘Whore Knight’ and ‘Champion of Sluts’, frequently you
>Calmly explained to him that his behaviour was unbecoming a knight-aspirant of Konig (+1 Fellowship)
>Decided to fist-fight for your honour (+1 Strength if you mostly won or +1 Constitution if you mostly lost)
>Walked away, he wasn’t worth your time (+1 Willpower)

Later you studied with the cleric-apprentices of Mazon, you
(pick 2, a single option can be chosen twice)
>Applied yourself diligently to your studies (bonus to knowledge checks)
>Learned how to turn the system of rules to your advantage (+1 Intelligence)
>Ran your own business (extra starting money)
>Made a lot of friends (+1 Fellowship)

But the clerics of the merchant God are not the most....honest lot. You saw a fellow student stealing from the church coffers and you
>helped him escape in exchange for a share of the take (extra starting money)
>decided to blackmail him (you have a somewhat unwilling ally in the church of Mazon)
>turned him in to the authorities, they expelled him from the Church and he swore revenge on you (bonus to social rolls with the Church of Mazon, Enemy: Disgraced Cleric)
>>
Finally you learned under the tutelage of the ancient sages of Yerra, you
(pick 2, a single option can be chosen twice)
>Applied yourself diligently to your studies (+1 Intelligence)
>Learned a great deal about magic (+1 Willpower)
>Made a friend in summoning class, whom you might just run in to again (pick one of: Angel, Demon or Elemental)
>Made a lot of friends (+1 Fellowship)

But magical power can be tempting, one of your teachers made a pact with a demon and tried to sacrifice you to it, you
>Found a flaw in his summoning circle, allowing the demon to drag him back to Hell and devour him (+1 Willpower)
>were rescued by your fellow students (+1 Fellowship)
>played along to make it look like the demon had dragged you back to Hell to feast upon your mortal soul. In truth you made your own deal with the demon, and walked into class the next day like nothing had happened (unwilling ally in Church of Yerra, Demon ally, you owe the demon a favour, pick one of: bear its child at a time of its choosing, ritually sacrifice 10 people at a time to be specified later, spy on the churches, unspecified favour).

Just to clarify: This is you remembering your life – you’re not telling Priestess Hapswith everything that happened.

“And” She drones on, you were free to associate with whom you chose to, we are not worshippers of Konig – to put pointless restrictions on matters of the heart.”
>>
Whilst in training did you have any...special friends? I mean, your Goddess doesn’t forbid her followers to have...relations, in fact she encourages it, what with being the Goddess of Joy.
>I don’t understand what you mean, all of my friends are special and we discussed my relatives above.
>I’m keeping myself pure for marriage
>I had one but...I’m too embarrassed to talk about it!
>I had a few yeah, I’m no innocent.
>I had more than a few boyfriends and girlfriends, sometimes it was hard keeping track of them all.
>I can’t think of any of my friends I didn’t sleep with at some point, I mean I love all my friends and I want them to be happy, I don’t understand why liking sex is bad.

“But now you are ready to take up arms and be the hand of the Goddess in this world, to do so you’ll need weapons.”

Now, what fighting style do you specialise in?
>None, specialisation is weakness
>One-handed weapon and shield (pick Sword, Axe, or Mace), good stable style
>Two-handed weapon (pick Sword, Axe, or Hammer), slow but powerful (requires 12 Str minimum)
>Polearm, (pick Spear or Halberd), keeping my foe at a distance
>Ranged (pick Bow or Crossbow), shoot them before they get close
>Two-Weapon Fighting (pick 2 of Sword, Axe, Mace), double the attacks! Defence? What’s the fence got to do with anything?

“And” She concludes “You will need the powers the Goddess has bestowed upon you.”

As a paladin of Velya you have certain powers, you automatically have the following power:

Redeeming Touch: You touch the target creature and flood their mind and soul with positive energy, showing them all the harm, all the pain and suffering they’ve caused others in their life. To the target this feels like a lifetime, but it only takes an instant, when it is over they know that they can make a choice: either continue down the path they are on, or try to make up for all the evil they have done.
>>
You can choose 3 of the following powers, individual powers can be chosen multiple times for greater effect:

>Smite: You can channel your divine power to deal additional damage to your foes, has greater effect upon magical or evil creatures.
Once: Small damage bonus
Twice: Medium damage bonus
Three Times: Large damage bonus
>Divine Shield: You have an innate and constant resistance to magic.
Once: it’s hard for wizards or other magic users to affect you
Twice: it’s very hard for wizards or other magic users to affect you
Three Times: Only powerful wizards or other magic users can affect you
>Paladins Mount: Your Goddess has called a special animal to bear you on your journeys
Once: You have a horse that is a fine example of its breed, it has no special powers, yet.
Twice: You have a fantastic or unusual creature such as a Unicorn, Pegasus, Hippogryph or Griffon (or other fantasy creature – write-in)
Three Times: A young Dragon has been called by the Goddess to serve you (pick dragon colour)
>Healing Touch: You can channel your divine power to heal others with a touch
Once: You can heal minor injuries
Twice: You can heal serious injuries
Three Times: You can heal life-threatening injuries
>>
>>33059751
>Divine Warrior: Your Goddess has blessed you with supernatural strength, speed and toughness. A favoured power of the Paladins of Konig.
Once: You add +2 Strength, +2 Constitution and +2 Agility, and lighter weapons barely break your skin (low damage resistance, equal to light armour)
Twice: You add +3 Strength, +3 Constitution and +3 Agility, and most weapons barely break your skin (damage resistance equal to medium armour)
Three Times: You add +4 Strength, +4 Constitution and +4 Agility, and even heavy weapons barely break your skin (damage resistance equal to heavy armour)

“Now I know you are eager to go haring off on a Quest” she glances at you, a smile on her face “I too was young once, difficult as that may be to believe.”

“I expected to tell you to visit the different adventurers guilds here in Silas, however” She shifts uncomfortably in her seat “The village of Dallersgill to the north have told us the local goblins that live in the area have gotten much bolder and have stopped stealing small items – and chickens – and moved up to attacking the new village and the new woodcutters camp that has been recently set up. Both the Mayor of Dallersgill and the merchant financing the logging camp have requested help in sorting this out. I think this would be a good experience for you, and no so dangerous that you can’t handle it alone”

>Sure, killing goblins sounds fun!
>Sure, I’ll make peace between all the parties, even if I have to crack their heads together!
>Sure, but, how should I go about this?
>I want to go to the adventurers guild first, I’ll sort the goblins later

Decisions about method do not tie you in to a particular outcome yet – you’re just talking right now.
>>
>>33059758
Oh holy shit, that chargen.
I'll...I'll give it a shot, give me a moment.
If I'm the only one that bothers reading through this, and I choose an option with a vote malus, do I win by default?
>>
>>33059758
Jesus, OP. Maybe you should've done these one at a time?
>>
>>33059854
Yes
any option not voted for is ignored, so even if the only option picked has negative votes, it wins

>>33059870
Good point, after posting all of that I had second thoughts, I'll try to spread things out a bit more in future.
>>
>>33059854
Primary: Fellowship Strength
Secondary: Agility Intelligence
Tertiary: Constitution Willpower

>Nobles, your parents planned to marry you off to the ruler of a distant land. You ran away and have been dodging attempts from both your family and your husband-to-be to kidnap you (Enemy: Noble Family, Enemy: Foreign Ruler, +1 Intelligence, +1 Agility).

>One of your parents was an angel of rulership and nobility (you look almost like a full angel – flawless looks, silver or gold metallic hair, unheard of -3 votes, +1 Fellowship, +1 Willpower, choose either: Wings or an extra divine power – below)
Wings. Since I'm the only one that's going to be filling the damn thing out, may as well go for broke.

>melee weapons (bonus to melee combat)

>mounted combat – I mean falling from horseback, ouch. (penalty to rolls whilst fighting on horseback)
Who cares about horses, we got wings.

>Joined every long-distance field exercise you could (+1 Constitution)
>Made a lot of friends (+1 Fellowship)

>Walked away, he wasn’t worth your time (+1 Willpower)

>Applied yourself diligently to your studies (bonus to knowledge checks)
>Learned how to turn the system of rules to your advantage (+1 Intelligence)

>turned him in to the authorities, they expelled him from the Church and he swore revenge on you (bonus to social rolls with the Church of Mazon, Enemy: Disgraced Cleric)

Second post of this fucking job application of a chargen, incoming.
>>
>>33059962
Whatever, I second this. I ain't gonna read through all that text OP, just get this pimp wagon rolling!
>>
>>33059962
>Learned a great deal about magic (+1 Willpower)
>Made a lot of friends (+1 Fellowship)

>Found a flaw in his summoning circle, allowing the demon to drag him back to Hell and devour him (+1 Willpower)

>I’m keeping myself pure for marriage
Former noble, yeah?

>Polearm, (Halberd), keeping my foe at a distance

>Smite
>Healing Touch
>Divine Shield

That...was a thing
>>
>>33060022
10/10 would smite with.
>>
>>33059962
Ah, wait fuck, Reverse Strength and Willpower's places, I kept them there from one of the earlier ideas when I was making a battle-angel not a wizard-angel.
>>
>>33060022
And thank you for putting in the time, updating Character sheet
>>
>>33060053
and whilst I'm doing that, some (simpler) choices for you to make:

You are
>Tall (6ft to 6ft 6in – pick a height)
>Average Height (5ft 4in to 5ft 11in – pick a height)
>Short (4ft 10in to 5ft 3in – pick a height)

You are
>Athletic
>Of Average Build
>Slender
>Chubby
>I’m Not Fat, I’m Just Big Boned

You have
>Gold Hair
>Silver Hair

You have
>Gold Eyes
>Silver Eyes

You have
>A-cup breasts, no really, I have breasts, I’m not a boy stop calling me that!
>B-cup breasts
>C-cup breasts
>D-cup breasts
>E-cup breasts, stop staring you perv
>>
>>33060086
Seriously we don't care, just start the quest already. I vote for the first choice in each category, done and done?
>>
>>33060050
>>33060086
Just to make sure, you did see my other post, right?

>Average Height (5ft 8in)

>Why is curvy not a damn option

>Silver Hair

>Gold Eyes

>D-cup breasts
'Fellowship'
>>
>>33060115
Yeah I got that thanks.

Ok, chargen done, now what would you like to do about dem goblins?

(reposting)
>Sure, killing goblins sounds fun!
>Sure, I’ll make peace between all the parties, even if I have to crack their heads together!
>Sure, but, how should I go about this?
>I want to go to the adventurers guild first, I’ll sort the goblins later

Decisions about method do not tie you in to a particular outcome yet – you’re just talking right now.
>>
>>33060154
I built us for diplomacy and magic, so that probably.
>Sure, I’ll make peace between all the parties, even if I have to crack their heads together!
>>
>>33060154
Wait what what goblins? Nobody told us about no goblins.
>>
>>33060233
second half of this post
>>33059758
wanna stick with the choice made by >>33060199 ?
>>
>>33060250
Sure, sounds like there's not (much) bloodshed yet so maybe we can prevent situation from escalating.
>>
>>33060266
>>33060199

Priestess Hapswith looks at you carefully "Yes, a peaceful option would be best, but not everyone sees the world the way we do."

"Gather your things and head north, if you recall your lessons, you know that Dallersgill is perhaps 2 days travel to north - on horseback that is, you could probably make it by nightfall if you left now."

>Leave now, try to get there before nightfall
>Leave now but no slow, no point in exhausting yourself
>Stay and do something else
>>
>>33060329
>no slow
should be 'go slow'
>>
>>33060329
>horseback

Isn't a flying human-sized thing faster than a horse, or would that exhaust us too much?

If it wouldn't be exhausting and be about as fast or faster than a horse, Fly, otherwise leave now and go at a decent pace, not exhausting but not too slow, try to get there early-midday tomorrow.
>>
>>33060356
>early-midday
to clarify, by this I mean about 10:30 a.m. or a little earlier.
>>
>>33060356
To clarify, when flying you can move about twice the speed or a horse over long distances - you glide as much as you can.

But flying does wear you out, like a forced march it allows you to cover a lot of distance quickly.

Flying in combat doesn't really wear you out.
>>33060369
Looks like it's the careful approach.
>>
>>33060329
Let's try to get there before nightfall, no reason for dillydallying. We're on a mission from God!
>>
>>33060397
>>33060369

Tie-breaker, roll 1d20 and repeat your vote, highest roll wins
>>
>oh neat a new quest I'll take a look and see if I like it
>GREAT WALL OF CHARGEN
nope
>>
Rolled 6

>>33060418
Before nightfall anon here.
>>
>>33060422
chargen is over, quest has begun
>>
>>33060418
Actually, I'll just change my vote (>>33060356) to using our wings to get there by nightfall.
We will probably be able to sleep in town before they expect us to fix everything, right?
>>
>>33060422
I did all the chargen for you anon.
Now no one else has to suffer like I did.
>>
>>33060422
I'm sticking with it because there's a slight chance we might get to bone a goblin.
>>
>>33060451
We're a virgin, remember?
You'd probably have to roll for an out-of-character action.

Seriously, I'm not opposed to smut, but save it for something remotely worthwhile.
>>
>going slow it is, writing

Forgot to say, when you are close to approaching the village will you land and walk in there, or descent from the heavens like an angel?
This is a village of regular folk, your appearance will cause a stir no matter what you do, but first impressions are important.
>>
>>33060484
Land and walk in, no reason to be a showboat about it.
>>
>>33060490
You fly north at a slower pace, stopping to camp before you get to Dallersgill. You approach the village at mid-morning.
You land away from the village and walk the last half-mile or so.
Dallersgill is a collection of perhaps 20-30 houses as well all of the usual things you’d expect to find in a small village: a smithy, a church an inn, etc.
In the distance, on the other side of the village you can see the start of a huge forest, on the edge of the trees is a makeshift encampment and you can hear the sound of wood being chopped and the the swearing and shouting of ordinary workmen doing their jobs.
You ask some of the locals and they tell you that the Mayor is also the innkeeper.
As you enter the Inn there are a few early patrons there drinking, every eye turns to you as you enter and the conversation stops dead.
After a pause a large man in his with a greying beard steps out from behind the bar.
“Can I help you lass?”

>I’d like a drink
>Ah, the Mayor I presume
>I’m here about a Goblin problem
>I might need directionss, this is the village of Dallersgill right?
>Other (write-in)

By the way, I'm tending to take the first vote because it seems like we only have 1-2 players, if people want me to wait a few minutes for voting, just say.
>>
>>33060515
>large man in his with a greying beard
well I fucked that up
should read
"large man with a greying beard"
>>
>>33060515
>Ah, the Mayor I presume
>I’m here about a Goblin problem

It's my votes you're taking, but waiting at least a few minutes from the first vote would be better.
>>
>>33060515
>I’m here about a Goblin problem
People might just be waiting for chargen to be over. Because ho lee shit.
>>
>>33060541
Good point
>>33060550
I can confirm chargen is fully complete
>>
>>33060550
It was kind of terrifying, yet also the main thing that drew me to this quest in particular.

>>33060558
Good. Next time you do a choice like that, break it into pieces.
Although this way did result in a more focused character build, it also scared most people away.
>>
“The Mayor, I presume” you say “You asked the Church of Velya for help with your Goblin problem, what can you tell me?”

“I am” he says, offering you his hand in greeting “Mayor Herbediah Bilsthwaite of Dallersgill atyerservice.”

“Well girl” he starts “We’ve been having goblin troubles since, oh...before my granddad was a lad. But the troubles we’re used to is them sneaking off with odds and ends, tools left out and the like, chickens, the occasional sheep if your boy isn’t watching the flock right. A nuisance, but one we’ve got used to. The gobbo’s ain’t smart, usually.”

He offers you a seat at a well-worn table in a corner and yells out “Missy, a couple of ales!”

‘Missy’ a young girl, arrives as he continues talking, slamming two mugs of ale down on the table with a sulky expression.

“But this is diff’rent ya see.” He continues “It all started when Mister Gadwin bought his crews in to start logging, I checked his writ, all there and official, and his boys are always proper respectful in my Inn, I told Mister Gadwin if his lads caused trouble for me or any of the ordinary folk here I would complain to Baron Silas so I would!”

He gets back on track “Well after this, ‘bout a month after Mister Gadwin started chopping trees the gobbo’s get organised, get violent.”

“A dozen folk have been injured and I hear that two of Mister Gadwins workers were found dead one morning with cut throats. Though I can’t say for sure, what with him having the bodies taken away so quickly.”

“What more do you want to know?”

>Do the goblins have a nest, a lair or something?
>You said they got organised, what do you mean?
>Where can I find Mister Gadwin?
>What happened to the villagers?
>What is Mister Gadwin doing about his dead workers?
>I know enough, time to solve this
>>
>>33060663
Ask all of these, in order.
>>
>>33060663
>Do the goblins have a nest, a lair or something?

When attempting to create a compromise between two groups, you should always gather as much information about the conflict as possible from both sides.

Is this gonna get lewd?

>>33060690
Maybe, maybe not.
Chargen made us a virgin, so it probably wouldn't be in character to start boning goblins.
>>
>>33060690
Players choice, the option is open for lewdness though any sex scene will be fade to black, wake up next morning.

But as >>33060699 said, virgin was picked so some rolls might be required if you want to do anything.

Probably the best way to handle it, honestly.
I've seen too many playerbases go toxic from arguments over such things, and this gives no OoC incentive to lewd.

Looks like a job for a diplomat. We need to gauge how willing the logger is to compromise and what sort of authority we can muster before having to resort to genocide.
>>
“Lots of things” you reply “When attempting to create a compromise between two groups, you should always gather as much information about the conflict as possible from both sides”

“Er, ok” he responds, nonplussed “You’re not want I expected”

“For starters” You continue, beginning your list “Do the goblins have a nest, a lair or something? You said they got organised, what do you mean? Where can I find Mister Gadwin? What happened to the villagers? What is Mister Gadwin doing about his dead workers?”

“Woah, Woah, slow down girlie” he says, raising his hands in defence against your onslaught of questions “right ah, yeah the gobbo’s have like a bunch of run-down huts deep in the forest, ‘swat I heard anyhow. Tis probably not too far from the logging site, I can ask one of the fur trappers to guide you there if need be.”

“Now as to organised, well one gobo we see every now and then is Sleekit – I guess you could say he’s their leader, he’s smart for a goblin, knows a bunch of human words. Anyway When some of the villagers got hurt he was standing at the back of a bunch of goblins, giving commands ‘fire that’ ‘get that human’ and suchlike. He’s never done owt like that afore. An mostly gobbo’s use teeth and claws, some ‘ave been using sharp sticks and stolen tools as weapons recently, though not well.”

“Mister Gadwin will be at the logging camp, in the big tent at the centre, he’s got the coin to dress well and you can’t miss him – he’ll be giving the orders. As to what he’s doing, well he signed the petition I sent to the Church but we had a set-to about where to send it, he wanted a follower of Konig out here to slaughter the gobbo’s or chase them off. I insisted we try the Church of Velya on account of help they’ve given us before.”

“He stormed out, was a mite upset I’d say, I heard he’s asking about hiring proper guards for the camp.”
>>
>>33060779
“Now the villagers, well, twice so far the goblins have come out at night and tried to set houses on fire, they ain’t too good at it and we’ve plenty of water so nothing’s been burned down yet.”

“But when folk come running outside to see what the fuss was about an’ grab buckets the gobbo’s attack them, all biting an’ clawing. There’s plenty of folk with marks on ‘em now and Halwid coulda lost use of his left arm, though he seems to be healin’.”

“I sent that petition after the second attack, I knew summat were up, I’ve heard that they’ve attacked the loggers camp last night, but I don’t know more than that.”

He runs out of breath, and, maybe things to say too.

>I need more info on...(write-in)

what do we, in character, know about goblins? What is their political status in the realm and in our religion? Pest to be exterminated, or a sapient being to be respected? It's obvious they don't have any legal claims on the land, but maybe there could be some workable deal between them, the village and the loggers...

Thank the man for his time.
Let's meet Mister Gadwin

That comment was actually meant for my fellow anons, not necessarily a dialogue suggestion, but if you want to use it as that it's fine.
Just keep in mind, if people want something to be dialogue or a write-in, they'll usually use greentext, quotations or state it as something the character does.

Goblins are officially vermin - killing them is not a crime.
Your church disagrees and think any living creature is worth respecting.

Goblin intelligence is somewhere around 'smart ape'.

They don't normally know much, but in the past invading orcs have used goblins as cannon-fodder in their armies as well as scouts and saboteurs.
>>
You head off to the loggers camp. It is a sprawling collection of tents with dozens of workers hauling logs around behind mules, clearing off branches and stacking the logs onto carts.
Beyond the camp, at the edge of the forest trees are being cut down. All around you are tree stumps.

As you walk through the camp your appearance draws attention as well as a lot of unwelcome commentary from the workers as to what they would like to do to you, requests that you remove your clothes and what your...position...should be after that.

The sun is up and you can smell treesap and sweaty workers, underneath it there is a wet, rotten smell that you cannot identify.

You approach the large tent in the middle of the camp, the entire front of the tent is open, allowing you to see several tables with maps spread on them. Looking at the maps is an older human in fine clothes barking commands. Also in the tent are a young man with inkstained hands and a submissive manner, bowing his head and nodding at the commands, and two rough looking fellows carrying shortswords.

>Your workers are extremely rude!
>Are you Mister Gedwin
>What is that smell?
>Other (write-in)
>>
>>33060946

Well this is going to be tough.

We need to find out how much the logger intends to or has to pay for mercenaries and hazard premiums for his workers to work in dangerous environment, because those are probably going to be limits to his concessions.
>>

We're here to deal with the goblins, not annoy people.
>>
>>33060955

>>

The first is unnecessary, those guys were just blowing off steam.
The third is probably just a smell we don't recognize from not being in many logging camps before, and we can always ask about it later in the conversation.

He walks around the table as he talks, approaching you he tries to take your hand and kiss it.

Natural 1 and Natural 20

A single 1 is of no consequence, it’s just a number and has no special effect.
If 2 out of 3 rolls are 1’s then the action is an automatic failure and may have other negative consequences.
Three 1’s indicate catastrophic failure.

A 20 is a great roll! But it’s just a number and confers no special bonuses.
Two 20’s are an automatic success and may have additional (beneficial) effects.
Three 20’s are as good as it gets and will always include a special bonus/effect of some kind.
>>
>>33061159
That is pretty much perfect, normal d20 bo3 tends towards criticals way too much, but your system negates that entirely.
I withdraw my comment about switching to d100s.

He kisses your hand, lingering over it as he does so, when he finally lets go your hand feels kind of clammy and you have a momentary desire you wash it clean.
“I’m Sireyi, Paladin of Velya” you say in a clear and commanding tone “I’m here to help solve your goblin problem.”
He pauses, caught out “of course, of course, my apologies I wasn’t expecting the Church to respond so quickly.”
“Let me show you what these filth have done.” He gestures towards his clerk, all business now “Ben, call a 5 minute break for the loggers and ask Smits and Yost to come here please.”

Ben leaves and then you hear a bell being run several times followed by a thin voices yelling out instructions.

Gadwin lowers his voice and steps closer “Listen, you look like a smart girl, I’m sure they Mayor has sold you some crazy story about us provoking the goblins and how we should go cut trees somewhere else. But I promise you I can make it worth your while it you just get rid of this problem, no questions asked.” He shakes a large pouch filled with coin suggestively.

A few moments later a couple of loggers enter, sweaty and stripped to the waist, Both have still healing wounds on their arms that look like claw or bite marks.
Gadwin steps away from you and says “Ah, Smits, Yost, please tell Paladin Sireyi here about the goblins.

The two loggers look at each other for a moment, one loses the silent contest of wills “well miss” he says, tugging his forelock and refusing to meet your eyes “We was just bedding down a few nights ago in our tents after work and they we wakes up with something biting and clawing!”

“Twas gobbo’s trying to kill us in our sleep!” He shows you his arms “I fights ‘em off and I yells as much as I can and they scarpers, must’ve been a dozen, no two dozens of the beasts miss!”
>>
>>33061330
“There” says Gadwin “You see, out of nowhere these goblins attack my men in their sleep!”
“And it wasn’t just these two, they killed two of my best men!”
He’s getting worked up now “They kill my men and who has to pay? Me! Of course it’s always me!”

As he starts ranting about the injustice of the world towards an honest business many trying to make enough to get by, you notice Yost and Smits glaring at him, before they notice you looking, at which point their gaze drops.

What now?
>Smits, or is it Yost? Tell me more about the goblin attack
>The Mayor said your dead workers had cut throats? Sounds a bit neat for goblins
>Tell me about the logging operation
>I know enough, time to go elsewhere
>Gadwin convinced me, time to wipe out the goblins
>>
>>33061336
>The Mayor said your dead workers had cut throats? Sounds a bit neat for goblins
this as an idle comment
then
>Smits, or is it Yost? Tell me more about the goblin attack
>>
>>33061336
Learn more about the attack from Smits and Yost, ask about the specifics of the men's deaths, from both them and their employer.

Maybe bring up the differences in the stories, assuming they say 'it was cut throats'.

Ask about what he said earlier about provoking goblins in regards to their logging operation.

In that order.
>>
>>33061403
>assuming they say 'it was cut throats'.

That should be assuming they DON'T say 'it was cut throats'.
If they say it was cut throats, there's no difference.
>>
“Smits, or is it Yost? Tell me more about the goblin attack” you start, adding as an aside “The Mayor said your dead workers had cut throats? Sounds a bit neat for goblins”.
“Yost, miss” says Yost, before Gadwin interrupts “Smits, Yost” he barks “Back to work!”

The two loggers leave.

He turns on you and points his finger in your face “I know what silly rumours the mayor has been spreading, there’s nothing to them. Goblins killed two of my most loyal men, and that’s that!”
“Now unless you have any real questions, may I suggest you get about what you came here to do.” He nods towards the open side of the tent.
>Er, right, I guess I’m done here (leave the camp)
>I’ll just take a look around the place (explore camp)

Well how did these two wake up while the other guys had slit throats?

We need to talk to each of them in separation.

Can spin it as confession so that they don't get offended, just so we can compare the stories.

For now let's ask about the logging operation maybe?
What were those stories about 'provoking the goblins', see just where he's licensed to cut.

Gadwin looks at you, hard and you can almost see the wheels turning behind his eyes as he searches for a way out of this.
He nods to his two guards (?) and they go stand by the tent entrance, turning away the clerk when he tries to come back in.
“Alright, the truth is, the goblins have a leader, a smart one. A half-orc named Braggedin.”
He wrings his hands nervously
“The goblins started attacking us almost from the day we got here, organised attacks at random times, supplies destroyed, tent ropes cut, fires started, hooting from dusk till dawn to stop us getting a full nights sleep. Too organised, much too effective.”
He pauses “only recently have they attacked the village.”
“I took my two best men and tried to find the goblin lair, maybe I could buy them off with some shiny beads or ale or something?”
“Braggedin found us first, before we knew it we had goblins all over us, he knocked both my men down – but not before one of them managed to cut him.”
“Braggedin was clear: we had to leave or he’d kill us, he was the one who snuck into camp and killed my men – probably as revenge for managing to wound him.”
He looks you straight in the eyes, trying to impress upon you the seriousness of what he says.
“I think Braggedin has military training, plenty of mercenary companies will take on half-orcs, if you see him, don’t hesitate, kill him quickly. If you don’t you won’t stand a chance.”

Ah, I was wondering why thet were there. Thought that maybe it had to do something with being the paladin of joy.

Yeah, it is min-maxed a lot. If I was in your position and had free reign of chargen, I would have made sure to make it more balanced. Less strength and more willpower for one. Having such a glaring weakness wouldn't be a good idea.

Somewhat related to this, do we know any non-divine magic?
I mean, just a basic fire bolt or something, willpower is our second primary stat.

I would've been more worried about that 8 fellowship. Seriously, just picking up a rank in divine shield instead of the third in divine warrior would help with your mage-fear.

Sorry, I got bored and went with the more interesting option

“Actually, before I go” you say, “I did have some questions, You said Braggedin was having the goblins attack you from the moment you came here? Can you think of any reason that might be?"
“I really couldn’t say” responds Gadwin, stiffly, “I’ve never seen or heard of him before.”

You move on to your next question “What dealings have you had with Sleekit?”
“I’ve seen the little monster directing his fellow goblins like a general” says Gadwin with a snort of contempt “But I’ve never had any dealings with him.”

“Alright, and finally, how far are you licensed to cut?”
“I have a license for 100 men for half a year” he gestures to a wooden chest in a corner of the tent “Signed by Baron Silas’ scribe” he continues proudly “It wasn’t easy getting that I can tell you.” He hand moves to caress his money pouch absently

>Somewhat related to this, do we know any non-divine magic?

Not yet, once we conclude this quest the plan is you go back to town, pick up 2-3 companions and start on another quest.

Your companions can teach you their skills, so if you pick a wizard follower you can learn wizard magic, pick a fighter and you can get better with weapons etc.

We should figure where the loggers are staying and have a word or few with that clerk/accountant, he might confirm or destroy trader's claims. Apart from that, I guess we could find the trappers.

You leave the loggers camp, your mind churning over what Gedwin told you, was he telling the truth, was even his confession a lie?
After asking a few of the villagers you find a rather run-down hut on the edge of the village, the home of the fur-trappers.
Knocking on the door you are greeted by an elderly man who invites you inside.

Inside are a number of lean-looking men wearing furs, they all look like they could be related, or half-bear, or half-bear and related. They’re sat around the place on the floor or on beds and drinking some foul-smelling concoction from ceramic jars.

The elderly man who ushered you inside offers you a seat on a rickety wooden stool. He speech sounds rough and difficult to understand.

“Hmm, Mayor said y might stop by girlie, you’m wanting to go to goblin den? Hmmmnot doing it ya hear? Me or mboys. You wait till ‘night and you’ll see mpplenty of gobs.”

we don't know of any person who died to goblins. We only know that two people got killed and even their employer admitted it was most likely done by a half-orc.

“I am a Paladin of Velya you will guide me there!” you proclaim, trying to sound authoritative.
The old trapper chews on his lip for a moment “mmmmmk, but mmmdoing myself” He turns to the other trappers “boys stay here, llback soon.”

The old trapper leads you deep into the woods, a journey of several hours, it’s now mid-afternoon (3-4pm).

The canopy of branches closes overhead, if you had to you could still fly, but you can no longer see the sky, and it’s dark here, you hate not being able to see the sky.

Suddenly he stops, holding up a hand to indicate you should stop too.

“What?” you ask. He waits and then says “I heard some-“

SUDDENLY GOBLINS EVERYWHERE

Goblins surround the two of you on all sides, springing from nowhere. A few have improvised weapons but those that don’t have grinning maws full of teeth, and long nails hardened into claws. You estimate there are maybe 30 goblins around you, they average about 4 feet in height and some wear strips of furs, others are naked.
Before you can react one steps forward, wearing a battered metal pot as a helmet.

“Yesyes!” he shrieks “Sleekit clever, Sleekit find you!” He jumps up and down in excitement “Sleekit find bird-girl, Bringing you to Baggin.”

He glares at the old trapper “Go away, not wanted here, only bird-girl”

Sleekit beckons you to follow him and turns as if to head deeper into the forest

Yes, any preference on wing appearance or is stereotypical white feathers ok?

Someone asked how visible are wings, when wings are at rest (i.e. walking not flying) they are visible from the front but they can be mistaken for a cloak at a distance - or covered with a real cloak. This assumes standard feather wings.

Braggedin's is, or was, a mercenary, right?

That would explain why the church of Velya and it's one paladin got the request, rather than a church to a god like Konig.

Sleekit looks at you for a moment, then says slowly and carefully, as if explaining to a child “Baggin not hurt goblins, Baggin keep goblin alive, all goblins alive today because of Baggin”
He waves his arms as if trying to convey the idea of something to complex for him to describe.
“Mens came, destroyed all foods, goblin starving, many goblins dying, Baggin friend of goblin for many years, helps goblin, brings meat, yum yum” he rubs his thin belly with his hand, looking at you to see if you understand.
“Baggin say, cannot bring enough meat for goblins, goblins go hungry, goblins see bird girl in human nest, humans talking to bird-girl. Baggin say must talk to bird girl, make mens stop destroying food.”

“Wait, wait” you say “How did you know I was coming?”

Sleekit grins “Men big and dumb and blind, goblin hides” He snorts in amusement “Watching bird-girl, always telling Baggin, Baggin say ‘Mayor’ and ‘Merchant’” Sleekit pronounces these two words carefully, as if he’s learned them by rote but doesn’t know what they mean “listen to bird-girl, maybe bird-girl listens to Baggin, maybe bird-girl tell ‘Mayor’ and ‘Merchant’ to leave food alone.”

Sleekit looks around then scampers over to a tree and pulls off a chuck of fungus as big as his fist “fruit of trees” he says, eating the whole thing in a couple of bites and licking his fingers “But this fruit small, goblins plant many big fruits” he says, spreading his arms wide to show something bigger than him.
“But all gone” his shoulders slump “Goblins plant, men destroy”

“Ok, How is Braggedin keeping you fed?” You ask
“Baggin great hunter” insists Sleekit “Find many big creatures in forest, deer, bear, boars, all meat for goblins, but too much goblins, not enough meat” he says.

“Braggedin is your friend, how long have you known him?” You say, trying to get some idea of the relationship between the goblins and their protector
Sleekit thinks about this one and then holds up 2 grimy fingers “Four, four snows” he explains “Baggin hurt, hurt bad, Sleekit find in woods, Sleekit remember orcs, orcs teach Sleekit, Baggin orc, Sleekit help, bring food, water, Baggin get stronger, Baggin not forget Sleekit. >>
>>33063022
As you follow Sleekit you continue to talk to him “Men destroying food, you mean the mushrooms you grow, why?”
Sleekit pauses as he scrambles over a log “Mens bad?” he ventures “mens hate goblins” he finally decides.
“Ah, ok” you think you’ll ask Braggedin that one.
“Why not just replant?” you ask, surely there’s enough room in this forest for everyone.
“Sleekit replant!” Sleekit stops, turns around and yells at you “Sleekit replant many, many, many times” he explains, holding up all 8 grimy claws “All times mens destroy food, Sleekits young die because of mens, Sleekit always replant!”

Seems like you hit a sore spot.

After what seems like an enternity, though is probably only a few hours, Sleekit leads yo into the Goblin village, your sense of direction isn’t great but you think he led you on a very indirect path to get here.
It’s early evening and the light is already starting to fade.
The goblin village is a collection of makeshift huts and borrows and treehouses, everywhere you look you can see goblins scurrying everywhere, there must be hundreds of goblins here.
If they wanted to they could wipe the loggers and the village off the map.

As you stand there trying to wonder what sort of idiot expected you to wipe these out on your own you hear a commotion.

A trail of goblins are following a big...something. As it gets closer you see it’s not a wizards nightmare made real, it’s a half-orc carrying a dead stag on his shoulders.

He makes his way into the village and drops the stag with a grunt, goblins swarm over it, carving off lumps and running away with them. The half-orc slumps, naked to the waist you can see he’s covered in sweat, he must have carried that stag a long way.

Well, not perfect, there’s a trace of Borderlander accent in his speech.

He offers you he hand, one warrior to another “We need to talk” he gestures to a much larger hut than the others “my home away from home” he says, a wry twist to his expression “come inside”

He stops, looks around and points to a couple of flat rocks about the right height for Goblins to use as a table “Of course, how clumsy of me, please take a seat, you must be tired after walking through the forest all day”
Seeing no threat as the seats are too far apart for him to easily grab you, you take a seat as he continues back to his hut, picks up a large earthenware bowl full of water and dumps it over his own head, soaking himself.

“Tell me how this all went wrong, from the beginning please” You say, you feel like you could be here for a while.

“It’s not that complicated” Braggedin explains “The goblins cultivate huge mushroom growths as food and the loggers started cutting right into one of their patches, destroying it.
The goblins retaliated and now Gedwin has teams of his loggers and the fur trappers out looking for mushroom patches to destroy.”

“I figure he’s trying to starve them out” He continues, “Sleekit asked for my help when he couldn’t solve the problem, I....know a little bit about how a smaller, weaker force can destroy a much larger one and I’ve been teaching the goblins the same tactics, whilst trying to keep them fed”

“Ok” You say “How did you meet Sleekit?”
“And as to that” he leans back and looks up in contemplation “I came here two years ago, I was wounded after taking on more than I could handle, dying actually. Sleekit kept me alive through the worst of it and when I decided to make a home in the forest I helped the goblins out occasionally, chased predators away from their village – I don’t actually live with them all time, I’ve build my own place not to far away.” He nods off towards the east.

“Sleekit sought me out not too long after the loggers arrived, and here we are.”

“Mister Gedwin says you murdered two of his guards after one of them stabbed you, and that cut on your arm looks like a sword-wound”
>>
>>33063911
He glances down at the cut on his arm and shrugs dismissively “That? I’ve had much worse, Gedwin came with his bullyboys trying to intimidate me into leaving, I showed them the error of their ways, one got in a lucky strike, but they were both alive when I chased them out of the forest. I don’t know who killed them, but if I could sneak into their camp undetected, I would have killed Gedwin, not his hired thugs.”

“I even think one of them felt sympathetic when he saw the starving goblins” muses Braggedin “It’s a shame that one’s dead, I really thought he was in favour of the offer I made to Gedwin”.

“Why haven’t the goblins just wiped out the loggers?” you ask

“Because The Mayor would run to Baron Silas, Baron Silas would run to the King, and they’d burn the forest down to get rid of us” explains Braggedin

Hmm, ok that’s food for thought

I'm simply asking why they didn't leave already if their mushrooms, prey and environment are getting slowly eliminated, and the opposition would be backed by the king's army should they fight.

We're not ordering around anyone.
>>
What couldn’t you handle?” You ask, curiously
“You’ll have to get me very drunk to get the answer to that question” answers Braggedin, with a smile.

“What deal with Gedwin” you ask.
Braggedins eyebrows go up in surprise, and then down “He didn’t-no, of course he wouldn’t, not to his advantage.”

“Gedwin tried by trying to bribe me to leave, I told him that if he offered enough money to buy supplies for the goblins for a month or so, that would give them enough time to move far enough away from the loggers that they’d never see each other again and still have enough time to plant enough fungus before the food ran out.” Braggedin explains “Gedwin didn’t want to pay that much and after he ordered his thugs to kill me and I fought them off, he left, he was arguing with one of his guards when he left.”

“Did the goblins try to burn the village” you ask
“I had them burning damp straw” explains Braggedin, “Smells awful, wakes everyone up, smoke everywhere but doesn’t burn very hot.”
“I wanted the threat of fire more than houses burned down and people killed”

“Why don't they migrate somewhere more peaceful?” you ask “surely all this violence isn’t the answer”
Braggedin gives you a long, level look “That’s exactly what I said to Gedwin, the goblins would love to migrate somewhere, but if they leave without enough food, they’ll starve.”

“I only have your word that you didn’t kill those two guards” you say
Braggedin concedes the point with a nod “I can’t prove I didn’t kill them, since my only witnsses are goblins, but if I snuck into that camp in the middle of the night, Gedwin would be dead.”

“How far would your authority over goblins go? Could you negotiate on their behalf? Would you negotiate with the mayor?” you ask, trying to find some way to get an agreement.
>>
>>33064340
“Sleekit is their leader” explains Braggedin “And Sleekit looks up to me, if you can find a deal that helps them, I can convince them to take it.

“Do goblins have anything worth trading with the human settlement?” you ask, perhaps they can live in harmony.

“Not that I know of” replies Braggeddin “But I’m no merchant”

“How far did goblins go when 'retaliating'?” You ask, worrying about casualties

Braggedin shakes his head dismissively “These are not warriors, they’ll steal, they’ll bite, they’ll claw but they’ll only kill in self-defense, or when starving.”

>No really, what couldn’t you handle (Fellowship, 1d20+2, Extreme difficulty, like two natural 20’s)

Whilst you have been talking, the goblins have been making stew out of the deer, and probably lots of mushrooms, the smell off cooking reminds you that you haven’t eaten since this morning, and that was trail rations. Your stomach growls in protest

Smart moneys on Gedwin for killing the guards, to cover up that he was offered a deal.

So trade seems unlikely, but the goblins are willing to move out. That is good. Still, peaceful coexistence would be nice, perhaps setting up some sort of boundaries past which the two settlements should not pester each other. Helping goblins move would be next best thing I guess.

>I'll take it your offer still stands then? Do you have anything more you'd like to tell the mayor? Would you be willing to meet with him if I arranged a meeting?
Naturally we'd have to find a spot where both parties would feel secure.

Regardless we need to investigate the loggers camp some more and have a chat with some of their people in private. That clerk might have something we could use to leverage the boss with.
No healing just yet, we're supposed to be the neutral party at least until order is reestablished at least.
>>
You continue your conversation with Braggedin. Eating a bowlful of deer and mushroom stew with your fingers is tricky, but you passed Sister Superior Agnes’ etiquette class, eating goblin-made stew is much easier than that. The two of you are sat closer to the fire as darkness has closed in and it’s getting cooler. Around you is the sounds of famished goblins slurping down their food, none of the goblins seem bothered by your presence.

“So, if I find enough food for the goblins” you say between mouthfuls “They’ll leave”
“Undoubtedly” responds Braggedin “That was the deal I offered to Gedwin – I’d already discussed it with Sleekit and he was ready to go for it.”

“But then” you continue “Who killed the guards?”
Braggedin looks thoughtful “The only finger I can point is at Gedwin, for some reason he must not have wanted anyone to know that he could get rid of the goblins by paying them off with food supplies. Stupid of him because I told him I would offer the deal to the Mayor next.”

>Wait, is that why Gedwin wanted Braggedin dead quickly? (Roll Intelligence, 1d20+3)

“How about I get rid of that wound for you?” you offer.

“This?” responds Braggedin, looking down at his arm “This is just a scratch, it’s nothing”

“hhmmm” you think “But where could we get enough food to feed hundreds of goblins for a month?”
“The village could provide some” suggests Braggedin “Gedwin was offering me a substantial sum to leave – on its own it wouldn’t have stretched far enough but with some help from the villagers, and maybe if one of the churches or the town of Silas helps, we’d have enough to get by”

It is now nightfall, many of the goblins are retiring to their huts. The fires are burning down slowly

I'd say it's pretty obvious Gedwin didn't want us to talk with the orc.

At any rate, let's get back to the village. I'm sure there will be enough libel circulating enough as it is.

Ask for a goblin guide to lead us towards the village by a shortcut, would go some way to prove their good intentions and the orc should by now realize we're unwilling to genocide the goblins.
>>
>Int check succeeded

“Ok I think I can convince everyone to pitch in and we can do this” you say, hoping this works.
For the first time since you met him you see Braggedin with a genuine smile “seriously?” he says “Well any help I can give, just tell me, I know not many people like goblins but they kinda grow on you after a while, despite them being a consistent danger to themselves.”

And that’s when it hits you “Of course!” you cry, shooting to your feet “consistent danger, Mayor Carrolwyns Clause!”

“Are you alright?” Asks Braggedin, rising to his feet.

“Mayor Carrolwyns Clause” you say again, starting to babble a bit “Mayor Carrolwyn won a concession from King Ansius II 200 years ago stating that ‘any mayor may cancel any contract within the limits of his village or surrounding environs if execution of the contract presents a clear and consistent danger to the people of his village, subsection 2 goes on to say that the mayor may confiscate such assets as he sees fit from the contractors to remove the danger.”

“And that’s good, right?” asks Braggedin, clearly not following you.

“It means that as long as I can convince the Mayor that the logging is provoking the goblins, he can remove Gedwins right to go on logging, or even confiscate his paychest to help the goblins move.”

“Wait, wait” says Braggedin, just catching up as you march across the village, full of adrenaline “Won’t Gedwin say that the goblins are the danger, not him.”

“That’s the beauty of it!” you say, overjoyed “Crown law doesn’t recognise goblins as intelligent – it’s no different than if Gedwin was causing floods, or avalanches or provoking a pack of wolves. The very laws that say goblins are vermin prevent them from being held accountable for their actions!” You spin to face him to see his reaction.

“But I should be getting, the village, I back to the village I get” you babble incoherently as you back away from him out of embarrassment.

“Woah, woah, slow down” says Braggedin, trying to follow you “If you what you say is true, then Gedwin won’t want you coming back alive, his men could be watching the forest right now waiting for you to emerge and kill you, then claim the goblins did it.”

“But I can just fly past them” you say, flaring your wings (hey at least it stops them doing that twitching thing).

“How much flying have you done in forests, at night?” he counters.

You flee out of sheer embarrassment, flying straight up, trying desperately to find a way through the canopy.

As the branches close in around you, you realise that this attempt is not going to work and you make a controlled dive back down, without hurting yourself. Fortunately risking life and wing seems to have cleared your head a little.

You alight on the ground near Braggedin “Any ladders or ropes I could use to get up there”

“Sure” he says “Let me show you”

Flying over the loggers camp you can see small groups of men in groups of 3 and 4 spread along the forests edge at regular intervals, covering a stretch of the forest maybe a couple of miles long.

Looks like they were worried about you and wanted to make sure you came home safe, the lanterns they’re carrying are to help them find you, and the axes...well they’re lumberjacks, of course they’re carrying axes. None of them think to look up.

You soar back to the village and hammer on the inns door, demanding to speak to the mayor.
You’re shown into the inns common room by a sleepy Missy, and a few moments later the mayor joins you, he’s wearing a floor-length woollen nightshirt and a woolly hat.

Going down to the inns common room you see Mayor Bilthwaite tucking into a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon and sausages.
See you he says “have a seat lass” and passes you a plate of fried food “get yersel around that”

Tell him about the legal loophole and the deal the orc offered.

Ask about his thoughts on this.

After we've informed the mayor, we can still go to the trader and convince him to make the deal willingly and still profit on it - or refuse to cooperate and be expropriated.

Maybe we could also investigate the murders before we confront him, get some testimonies from individual loggers.

“They’re all sleeping in late” chuckles Mayor Bilthswaite “Maybe been up late handling their logs.”
“Ah good” you say, letting that comment slide “Do you remember what we talked about last night?”
“A peaceful solution about the goblins moving on” he replies after a moments thought, “I don’t recall the specifics but that part stuck with me”
“And” you continue “If I had a legal way to force Gadwin to do something, what’s to stop him from telling his loggers to kill me?”
The Mayor puts down his knife and fork and stares at you hard “You really think it’ll come to that?”
“Uh, maybe” You wonder if Gadwin is so blinded by gold that he’ll try and kill a paladin in broad daylight.
“Anyway, about my idea....” You explain the legal stuff to the Mayor and cite the relevant precedents, your legal history teachers would be so proud.
“well I never” says Mayor Bilthswaite “we had the solution all along, I suppose we should go down to the camp right away and roust Mister Gadwin out of bed, unless you think it prudent to bring a few of the lads with us?”

“Bring a few of the lads” you say “Justice is best served with witnesses.”
“Well said” responds the Mayor, raising his morning ale to you in a toast.

A few minutes later, with a handful of the lads behind you, you go down to the logging camp.
Mister Gedwin is there, looking tired, in fact all the loggers are moving slowly this morning.
As the crowd approaches Gedwin comes out of his tent, his clothes rumpled and a handful of ‘guards’ at his back, the loggers all stop work to watch what’s going on.
“What do you want Bilthswaite you old sot” growls Gedwin, catching sight of you his fists and jaw clenches and he opens his mouth to say something but decides against it.

Please, OP, make sure you fill tag in right, seperated by commas. Don't go make thread specific tags, just tags that will work for the entire run of the quest (ie. no "tavern fight" tag just because there was a tavern fight in that particular thread). Try to make the description non-spoilery

Also, don't put the responsibility of archiving on the players. I believe that QMs should archive their own threads.
Another thing. The archived threads only update automatically once an hour till the thread dies, if you think the last update might not get archived before the thread deletes, manually archive it again.

>So to let me summarize what you did: You try to bribe me the moment I come. You actively try to antagonize the usually peaceful goblins by having their food-sources destroyed. When the goblins still offer a peaceful solution, you try to bribe their leader and then have your own negotiators killed. You then spout blasphemous comments directly in front of a paladin and many witnesses. You have killed two of your employees because they found out about how corrupted you are. Then you practically admit it in front of their armed comrades. Are you sure you are qualified for this job? Even if I left now, do you really think you could continue your work?

Even if I left now, the Mayor would exercise his right to null your logging contract, which he is allowed to do because you are endangering the whole village be creating a village full of starving goblins, only held back by their leader. Even if the Mayor somehow let you continue, do you really think your loggers after having two of them killed because of convenience and endangering the rest of them because of your own short-sighted idiocy?

Having them resettle would end this as well, which is another reason to do it. It's cheaper and less bloody and risky than exterminating them.

>Well as a bare minimum he's going to pay for the supplies for the goblins to move

Since we're such a diplomancer perhaps we could go beyond our initial task and work out something mutually beneficial between goblins, the village and the loggers? Gadwins contract will go to the village, thus the loggers can continue working. Not exactly sure how to make the relationship between goblins and the village progress into something beneficial.
>>
>>33069212
hire some of the goblins for logging/goods transport and pay them in food? Or something to that effect. Also try and make some sort of contract so the villagers don't just turn the goblins into slaves
>>
>>33069211
Agreed. But I think that maybe too late now since the loggers are pretty damn unhappy with their employer.
>>
>>33069212

Yeah, I've been thinking what goblins could offer, but to be honest I think the best they can do for the villagers is to move away from them so that the petty theft stops.

Yeah, the loggers should be allowed to stay under new management.
>>
>>33069272
If the humans taught the goblins how to properly maintain a forest, they could give the spare wood to the humans in exchange for food. Also, the forest would be healthier, too.
>>
>>33069305
maybe goblins could gather some herbs and shit in the forest and trade them for stuff?
Shit, I don't know.

Maybe their mushrooms could be used as some ingredient or fermented into alcohol (can you do that?) turning them into trade good and giving an incentive to make and maintain new farms. Would give more prosperity for the village, no more petty thefts and annoyances from the goblins.

We could always ask the half-orc
