Welcome back to Golem Quest! Here you take on the form of a stone golem, who just one week ago awoke to find your creator burnt to a crisp and yourself gifted with sentience.

Skirmisher Squad I: Defend: Goravan

Previously, you maneuvered your creations to defend the hamlet of Goravan against a predicted bandit assault. Hiding your golems amongst the town's buildings, you waited and bolstered your defenses.

Soon the bandits appeared, in roughly two score, led by a huge man by the moniker of 'Wolf'. This man seemed quite brazen, marching into the town square with his forces, challenging the town's authority.

Swiftly, you engaged the forces with your skirmishers and heavy unit, the Titan. You decided to aid the Titan in its attacks, letting the skirmishers battle the rabble. Blow after blow were exchanged, with the fleshy bandits taking the worst of it. However, something strange happened, something you did not calculate.

The Titan had been exuding an odd mental feeling through the bond, and the battle seemed to exacerbate this, causing your bond to be severed midcombat. Your perception is currently housed in your main form, with your ancillary crafting form animating a new skirmisher.

What do you do?
>>
>>33071998
Can we try and reestablish contact with the titan?

If not, switch perspective to the skirmishers and try to support its actions.

Try to connect again with the titan

Connect with our skirmishers and see how the fight is going.

Also, gonna be a bit slow on the start-up here, everyone. Gotta grab a bite to eat, shouldn't take too long though.

You turn inwards, searching for any scrap of the abstract link connecting you to your wayward creation.

At first, any scrap of it seems to be gone, lost to the ether. You dig deeper, allowing yourself to feel for any feeling or remnant. After a rough minute, you find a mote of the link remaining, a sliver of what was once a strong, nearly complete, connection.

Thinking quickly, you believe that you can try to subdue the simple mind now undoubtedly on a rampage across Goravan, taking control of the form once more. It would be difficult and perhaps dangerous, but it would be quick and the most complete solution.

Secondly, you may be able to reason with the new creature with your other golems in the field. Considering the primal state the mind was in when you last observed it, this may be shockingly easy or impossible.

Finally, you know you can separate yourself completely from the golem and take it down with your forces in the field.

There may yet be other options... but what do you do?
>>
>>33072970
When you say subdue, are you talking about completely overwriting the mind, or taking control of it like a cerebrate?
>>
>>33073023
Depends on what you guys want to try to do. Both are possible.
>>
>>33072970
Lets try the first option, as it can be done from here, then decide from there if it fails

I'd vote for trying to take a cerebrate, then.

In its most base form, cerebrate essentially means to think. In this sense, however, it is being referred to as a physical form dominated by a stronger being mentally. If you're familiar with Warhammer 40k, many of the more cognitive Tyranids could be considered Cerebrates, as they can operate independently to an extent, but neither their wills nor their thoughts are their own.
>>
Gathering yourself, you lock onto the mote of the connection remaining and flood it with your mind, trying to enter it as you have entered the minds of your more pliable subordinates.

You burst into a mind running nearly completely on rudimentary instinct, though it is not animalistic, as you can hear mumbling. You feel a buzz in your mind as you are within another's.

"Who are you? Get out, get out, GET OUT!" You feel your mind accosted by the other's, attempting to shunt you back down the path you have just blazed. Marshaling your mental presence, you attempt to expand your connections in this mind, flooding it with yourself.

Your goal is simple; subverting this mind's higher level processes to be subservient to your own. This will leave the creature sentient, but beholden to you.

This is not an easy task, as you have not done any fine work in any minds other than blank slates. Your relatively superior mental ability dwarfs this new mind's, and you easily begin to shift its contents to your liking, with some difficulty caused by the body's occupant. Your finesse could be better, but as you work, you leave the contents undamaged, mostly.

At the end of it, you do not know how much time has passed, but you can feel the mind's feeble struggle end, welcoming you wordlessly, as a dog would its owner.

You return to your own perception and then the skirmishers' seeing that in the interim, the bandit force has been dealt with, bloodily. Bodies are strewn across the streets, a number of buildings are damaged, and Wolf's body is... in several places. You can see precision work, where your skirmishers have been dealt with the intruders, but the rogue Titan seems to have done most of the work.

Surveying the losses, you can gauge that you have lost two skirmishers in the battle, leaving you with your retaken Titan, one Pylon, and Three Skirmishers.

What do you do?
>>
>>33073578
I don't suppose we know if any of the bandits fled?
Send the skirmishers out to scout, have them ping us if they find any humans.

Tell the people waiting that the battle is over.
>>
>>33073664
Yeah, i'll back this.
>>
>>33073578
Tell the people in the church that the bandits are either dead or fled. Ask if they can go scout out to make sure no more are around.

You use your remaining skirmishers to scout out the town, searching for any stragglers as your Pylon returns to its mobile form.

Using the Pylon, you alert the villagers to the current situation, "The fighting has ceased, searching for stragglers. The immediate area is safe."

After a few minutes, your skirmishers find one straggler, dead by his own blade, it seems. Odd, that.

After the skirmishers return after searching the immediate area, you find the villagers milling about the area, some seeming unfazed, while others are obviously quite upset by their surroundings. Many are glancing at the Titan, who has stood idle, on the east side of the hamlet, since you returned to direct control of your golems.

What do you do?

I'll agree with the other anons, but also ask our pet bandit if he thinks the people he used to work with would suicide due to a lost battle, and if not what might have caused that one guy to off himself.

>>
You use your skirmishers to remove the useful items from the corpses, while transporting them a decent distance from town.

As they do so, you use your now renewed connection to your Titan to order it to offer its services to the town.

Almost immediately, the Titan animates, crouching down to the nearest villager, asking if they need help.

It takes a long while, into the evening, but you get the town cleared out, the weapons and armor stockpiled in the town, and the Titan is... trusted, again.

The lord speaks to your golems as they assemble in the town square in the evening.

"Thank you so much." He grins. "If not for your efforts, this town would have been ransacked and enslaved twice now. I need to find you a suitable reward for these heroic deeds!"

What do you say?
>>
>>33074340
WE REQUIRE MORE VESPENE GAS
Serious answer, we could always use more goles to be built
>>
>>33074340
The though is appreciated, but I'm not sure what rewards we would even care about. Goodwill seems the best thing for us right now, as our main weakness is a lack of knowledge that friends can help rectify.

Also warn him that this isn't over, as the bandits still have their best troops and spellcasters. Tell him that you'll continue working on more forces, and Tomas may be able to erect stone walls for fortifications.
>>
>>33074340
I don't believe there is anything you could provide me that I do not already obtain on my own. Your gratitude will suffice.
>>

>>
"I do not believe that you have anything of particular interest to me. The best I may request is simply your gratitude and goodwill."

The lord smiles, "You may say that now, but I'll come up with something, just you wait."

"Keep in mind, this isn't over yet. We have simply dealt with the underlings."

That sobering thought wipes the grin off of his face. "Yes, well, good thing we have you around then! Good day, Sir Golem." He walks down the main thoroughway, talking to villagers as he passes.

What do you do?
>>
>>33074733
Set our golems to work building defenses around the town
>>
>>33074733
Some basic fortifications would be great, but we need to continue building our numbers as well
>>
>>33074733
Talk to the bandit we have and ask him why one of the people attacking us would suicide.

Escort tomas back to the tower with the skirmishers, keep the titan in town. I expect the enemy witch is doing some trickery.

Keep working on golems.

>>33074845
When tomas can cast stone wall, the fortifications problem will be solved.
>>
>>33074733
More golems of course
>>
>>33074862
This, but lets see what our new cerebrate is capable of. Experiment a bit with commands to find out how much leeway it will use to accomplish goals. Try transferring a skirmisher to its control.
>>
>>33074733
our melee is good, but i think we need to get some range in our arsenal, i mean what if the enemy has a spellcaster in the back of a ton of goons? just let them sit there shooting us till we can cut through the whole army?

i say we need to research long ranged artillery
start research:magic:lightning strike
>>
>>33074733
what is the smallest golem we can build?
build that as a crafter, use that smaller golem to make an even smaller golem with the same relative proportions, repeat until we have dust sized nano golems

You return the golems to the base of the tower for now, leaving one skirmisher in the town square as a method for which the town could reach you.

During the transit, you ask the bandit. "Would there be any reason for your former allies to end their own lives in response to being routed in a skirmish?"

He starts at the sudden question, but responds, "I wouldn't think so. Failure is not a death sentence in the band. If it was, most of the band would be dead at this point. I have no idea why one would do that."

You leave it at that for now, though you ponder his response as a though occurs to you. Technically the Titan still thinks on his own. Perhaps he could command a portion of your troops in your stead?

When the group returns, you attempt to shift the mental bond of one of your skirmishers 'through' the bond between you and the Titan. It's a very slow process, as you are only used to manipulating these bonds very slowly and carefully. Finally, though, you feel the bond between you and the skirmisher fade away, yet it still stands.

You order the titan to harvest wood, and use its new protege to aid it. Immediately the Titan begins to work its way to cutting down a tree, using its mutable weapons as a makeshift axe to do so. The little one, without your input, shimmies up the tree and begins to lop off boughs to make it easier to transport.

So simple tasks are within their reach. Good. You allow them to finish, and order the Titan to guard the base of the dwelling with its skirmisher ally.

Interesting developments. What do you do?

Can we get the body of the guy who killed himself and study it? My paranoia is intensifying.
