You are Sireyi Valyenya, formerly of House Valyenya is a Paladin of Velya, the only one currently serving Velya, and the first to be called in many years.
18 years old, you have just finished your Paladin training.

The story so far....
On your first real quest as a Paladin you were sent to help rid a village of its goblin trouble. Once you got there you found out that a logging operation had provoked the goblins and that the merchant in charge, Mister Gedwin, was ordering his loggers to deliberately destroy the goblins mushroom farms and drive them away or starve them to death.
The goblins (with the help of a half-orc ally) offered to relocate, if only Gedwin would provide enough funds for them to buy food and supplies.
Gedwin kept a tight grip on his purse and refused, even having two of his own men who witnessed the conversation killed (you think).

You convinced the local mayor to remove Mister Gedwins license for logging and force him to pay for the goblins relocation.
Going down to the logging camp you engaged Gedwin in a debate in front of his men and defeated him with your wits and social skills.

Now none of the loggers support him, and all that remains is to decide whether to:
i) Stop the logging operation, the logging will cease and the goblins will remain in the area. The village will just have to put up with the petty thefts.
ii) Gedwin can pay for the goblins relocation, the village can benefit from the profits from the logging, and the loggers keep their jobs (yay capitalism!)

Either way you plan on arresting Gedwin for the murder of his men on your authority as a Paladin.
>>
“Are you going to stand behind a man who lies and who murders you?” you ask the loggers.
“They will do as they are told” Gadwin responds, clearly ignorant of what’s happening behind him.
The loggers are in open revolt, yelling curses, shaking fists, raising axes.
He’s finished, the only thing left is to decide how this ends as you arrest him

>Pack up the camp, the logging is done (Ultimatum, Roll Fellowship, 1d20+2, DC 5)
>Fetch your paychest, you’re paying a ‘Goblin Tax’ (Ultimatum, Roll Fellowship, 1d20+2, DC 10)

No longer in rapid fire conversation mode, all votes count.

Best of 3 rolls used, crits/critfails only occur on 2 or more 1’s or 20’s.

Hey OP, do you take the first three appropriately modded dice for the winning option, or does that 15+2 not count because he voted for something else?
>>
>>33079220
I hope it's the former because the latter encourages people to vote for whatever got a high roll, rather than what makes sense.
Also, speed voting is bad and should never be used.
>>
>>33079267
That was exactly my concern about the dice, and the speed voting during rapid-fire conversation could work, as long as OP ignores the inevitable trollvotes and terrible write-ins.

It would still be better to just use a five minute time limit on anything that would use speed voting and only votes that choose one option being accepted.
That way, most people would get to vote while still being pretty quick.

HI, Op.
I have a question: How intense are the lewd scenes going to be in this quest?
On a scale from one to ten, one being Mills and Boone romance, five being Oglaf and 10 being, I dunno, like the Fuckronomicon as written S.L. Annesh, or something?
>>
>>33079920
He said last thread that they're just going to be Fade to Blacks.
There are no lewd scenes.
>>
“Fetch your paychest” you say to cheers from the loggers “you’re paying a ‘Goblin Tax’”
Looking around, Gedwin sees he has no support save for a handful of paid toughs, and his shoulders slump in defeat.
“Alright” he mumbles “you win”.
You and Mayor Bilthswaite march Gedwin back to his tent and discuss your terms.

Soon, everything is agreed. Gedwin is under arrest, under the authority of Mayor Bilthswaite. A lawyer has been summoned from Silas to represent him, will he see punishment for the murders he has probably committed? Maybe, either way the trial will take several months.
The logging will continue under the control of the village, with better hours and working conditions for the loggers, they picked Smits as their representative at the negotiations.

The village digs as deep as they can for any spare livestock or stored food to give to the goblins, and Gedwins paychest easily handles the rest of the cost. As Mayor Bilthswaite discusses sending some men to go and tell the goblins of the offer, you wonder if Sleekit isn’t around watching you.

Mister Gedwin is escorted back to the village to sit a cell until the trial can begin, and the remains of his paychest are being taken to the Mayors inn to be locked safely away.
There’s no great fanfare or parade for you, just a lot of happy smiling folk.

You look towards the forest and can see a tiny figure of a goblen at the edge of the trees waving and beckoning to you, or maybe he’s making a ride gesture, hard to tell at this distance.

The Mayor shakes your hand as it’s all over. “Thank you m’dear” he says effusively “couldn’t have done it without you. What will you do now?”

>I should be getting back to the Church and report my success
>There’s someone I need to see before I go (speak to goblins)

I think it best to use only the dice rolls from posts that voted for the winning option.

I would only fall back on dice rolls from other posts if there wasn't enough votes. But I am open to suggestions.

>>33079267
>>33079441
As regards speed voting, I wanted to create a fast-paced argument rather than a measured conversation.

Upon reflection, taking only 3 votes was clearly a bad idea and I apologise to any players whom I effectively ignored as part of that. I won't be doing that again.

I would still like to (in argument/social combat situations) be able to create the feel of a fast-paced conversation from time to time, and seems like a time limit on votes would be a better idea.

Or I might toss the idea if it's not going to work. I would very much appreciate player-feedback regarding how to create a fast-paced conversation/argument.

That is only going to be used occasionally.
>>33079585
I woke up too early, then crashed again
>>33079920
I'd be comfortable writing scenes as lewd as kissing and light petting, maybe even hand-holding.

Anything beyond that is fade-to-black.

Given that your character is a virgin who is saving herself for marriage, lewds may never happen.
>>
>>33080118
>Anything beyond that is fade-to-black.
That's fair enough, I guess.
>>
You wander over to the edge of the forest and the goblin beckons you further in, just out of sight of the camp, you find Sleekit and Braggedin.

Sleekit is jumping up and down in excitement “Bird-girl save goblins, bird-girl save goblins” he chants.

Braggedin is more coherent “Thank you Sireyi, Paladin of Velya, because of you, hundreds of goblins are going to have a chance at a life not filled with suffering.”

He looks like he’s going to hug you, or maybe clap you on the shoulder, instead he settles for a firm handshake. “I don’t know if our paths will cross again” he says “But you have a friend in me.”

Waving their goodbyes, Braggedin and Sleekit, disappear into the forest.

The villagers seems to want to celebrate your success and are enthusiased about holding a feast in honour of ‘no more goblin pests, and that swank bastard Gedwin is gonna get his’, you are obviously invited.
>Attend the feast later today, then go back to the Church
>Politely decline, you don’t want to be a glory-hog, it’s back to the church to report on your success, and maybe some more sleep (you only slept for a few hours)
>Hey I’m not finished talking to Sleekit and Braggedin QM, bring them back!

You stay for a modest feast, as much as a small village can make on short notice, the villagers seem very grateful, offering congratulations, and many toasts to your health, your future career, all the enemies you will slay, all the good honest folk you will save and many other things you can’t quite remember.

As the guest of honour, whilst everyone else is drinking ale, your cup gets continually topped up with the Mayors best wine. You’re not sure what time you got to bed, or even remember getting to bed, that wine was strong stuff. You hope you didn’t do anything too embarrassing.

You wake up in your own bed at the inn, and alone in your bed, which is a relief.

The next morning, wishing everyone a fond farewell, you fly back to the Town of Silas, taking time to stop partway and get a decent nights sleep, wine-free.

Landing at the Church of Velya you go inside to give the armoury back its armour and stow your gear in your room before reporting to Priestess Hapswith.

As soon as you’ve got your gear stowed in your room, and before you can take a moment to make yourself more presentable when reporting to your superior, a young novice scurries up, breathless with nerves “Priestess Hapswith requestsyouseeherimmediately” she blurts out “She’s got the Priests of Mazon, Konig and Yerra with her!”

That doesn’t sound good.

You quickly make your way to Priestess Hapswiths office and knock carefully on the door. You hear raised voices from inside. The door opens to the stern face of Priestess Hapswith, who looks relieved to see you “Ah there you are child” she says, stepping out of her office to talk to you in the corridor, before the door closes you can indeed see the head of the local Churches of Mazon, Konig and Yerra in her office, having a spirited discussion.
>>
>>33080500
“I trust your quest was successful?” she asks, keeping her voice low and glancing around to make sure the two of you alone on the corridor, which you are.
>Well it was quite complicated....(offer full run-down)

XP pastebin, below basic rules

If you were playing a rip&tear character you'd get bonus XP based on how much ripping and tearing you did.

You're playing a half-angel Paladin of the goddess of peace, with a skillset and backstory that indicates peaceful, diplomatic solutions.

You get bonus XP based on that.

we never got to use Divine Energy. How does it work?
How much energy do we use for our powers, like Smite, Redeeming Touch, Shield, etc?
>>
>>33080768

Maybe there would have been a boon from the warrior god instead, or dark side points.

Still, given the faith we're championing, I 'm guessing giving the polearm will be reserved as a last resort.
>>
>>33080990

That's what I was wondering as well. Well except shield is apparently a passive ability that's always in effect.
>>
>>33080889

I think we should spend 5xp for rank 1 Divine Warrior at least. Just in case things go south. We are really weak at fighting.
>>
>>33080889

Divine Warrior

Halo for Angel ability

All xp spent sans 1 Angel xp due to rulership discount, Fellowship bonus up to +3, Con malus removed, now +0, 1 rank of each skill since they'll both be useful based off last mission, Hitpoints raised for less fragility.

Divine Warrior to supplement our primary weakness, physical combat.

Halo serves as a light source for night-flying, and might give a circumstantial persuasion bonus, even at the current level, in addition to it's main purpose.

>>33081013
That's why I chose it, an on/off anti-magic ability wouldn't be nearly as good.
>>
>>33081043
That's pretty much what I was thinking.
Seconding the XP spending.
>>
>>33080889
>>33081013
Agreed. Divine warrior one sounds like a solid investment. It looks like we'll never be a master warrior, but at least we won't embarrass ourselves.

I would also like to vote for blessed health
>>
>>33080990
>>33081013
The costs for powers you have are listed on the character sheet

http://pastebin.com/tsAx3JGT

Redeeming Touch 1: You touch the target creature and flood their mind and soul with positive energy, showing them all the harm, all the pain and suffering they’ve caused others in their life. To the target this feels like a lifetime, but it only takes an instant, when it is over they know that they can make a choice: either continue down the path they are on, or try to make up for all the evil they have done. Costs 6 Divine Energy
Smite
Costs 3 Divine Energy

Divine Shield always on, no cost

Healing Touch
Costs 3 Divine Energy

To clarify:
Base Divine Energy is the total cost of all abilities possessed and refreshes each day.

In other words, you can use all of your abilities once per day each, if you buy no bonus energy.
Or you can mix and match use as circumstances require.
>>
>>33081081
So we can use our powers 4 times per day atm?
That's.... not much at all.
>>
>>33081110
You're first freaking level. You'll get better.
>>
>>33081081
So taking passive abilities doesn't add to our divine energy?
That does not seem very logical.
>>
You quickly give Priestess Hapswith the rundown on your success and she gives you distracted, routine congratulations. You feel a bit disappointed given that this was your first quest, but clearly something else is going on.

She glances around again to see that no one is nearby and says in a quiet voice “Child I am so sorry to do this to you but I need you to undertake a very dangerous quest. This is a terrible think to ask a new paladin such as yourself but these are desperate times.”

And without another word she ushers you into her office, the argument breaks off, it looks like Miclan, the head of the local temple of Konig was going to smash an ornate wooden box over the head of Gartus, the head of the local temple of Mazon as Halthan, the local head of the Church of Yerra was trying to stop him. In a somewhat shocked state at the sight of these three dignitaries acting like children you think idly that he can’t smash that box, that’s Priestess Hapswiths favourite filing box, she keeps all the disciplinary reports in there.

You stare at this frozen tableau for a few seconds as everyone realises what they’re doing. Priest Miclan carefully puts the box down and sets back down on a chair, as Priests Gartus and Halthan likewise take their seats. Priestess Hapswith glares at them all for a moment before pointing to a spot for you to stand on in front of her desk and then takes her seat.

You face the four senior priests with a little trepidation, wondering why they’re all here, and what could be so important.

Priestess Hapswith starts “Paladin Sireyi” she says, shocking you, she never calls you by your name “No doubt you’re wondering why we called you here.” She then breaks off and pointedly looks at Miclan, who, despite his imposing physique and reputation as a warrior, seems to squirm in his seat, unwilling to speak.

>Wait for Priest Miclan to speak
>Yes I am wondering why you called me here
>Something bad happened didn’t it?

I would've though we'd get a willpower bonus of some kind.
Also, the healing ability and smite seem a bit pricey in cost, I would've thought the normal divine abilities would cost DE equal to the level of the ability being used.

You wait politely for Priest Miclan to speak, he is your elder after all. He takes a few moments before deciding what to say. “Paladin Sireyi” he starts, “let me congratulate you on finishing your training, whilst your combat training could have been more thorough, I’m sure you are the best choice for the task at hand.”

Once he’s started talking he manages to pick up momentum “Your studies included a history of holy relics and artefacts of the Churches, so I’m sure you remember the Horn of Alzurad.”

“The horn is an important relic of Konig, and as everyone knows, it is held in the vault of Konigs Cathedral in the capital city or Dornmar, the city of Dornmar itself.”

“However, what ‘everyone’ knows is often not correct.”

“Indeed” interrupts Gartus, Priest of Mazon “Because today, ‘everyone’ thought the Church of Konig didn’t lie through its teeth to its fellow Churches, ‘everyone’ thought that you had more honour than tha-”

Priestess Hapswiths bony fist slamming down her desk shuts him up, Priest Miclan continues.

“The Horn was secretly kept elsewhere as a security measure, and a copy was held at the main temple. The real Horn has been stolen.”

You recall the Horn of Alzurad is a very important relic of the Church of Konig, said to have been given to Saint Alzurad by Konig Himself. The Horn can call forth long-dead mortal heroes to fight once again. The heroes have won major battles with their timely appearance and some say the Kingdom of Dornmer would not exist were it not for the Horn.

“Where was the Horn hidden?” you ask.
Priest Miclan looks discomforted “Here, in Silas” he says, you eyes widen in surprise as you realise you trained in the same Church that held such a major relic.
“It was given into my safekeeping by the High Priest of Konig, who-”
“Who neglected to tell anyone else that he was hiding such a powerful relic, vital to the defence of the Kingdom here” interrupts Gartus, his voice rising “Putting us all at risk, our enemies would have a happily burned this entire town to the ground to get their hands on-”
“Secrecy was a vital part of the security arran-” snaps Miclan before Priestess Hapswith cuts him off with a glare and a cough that sounds suspiciously like ‘get on with it’.

“Anyway” concludes Miclan “It was held at my Church, and now it’s been taken.”

“As to that” you respond “Who stole it?”

The four exchange uncomfortable glances “We don’t know” says Priest Halthan, speaking for the first time “We know there are extremely well-prepared, because none of my diviners can locate the Horn, we know it’s being shielded from divination magic, but we don’t know where it is. The list of enemies the Church – and the Kingdom – has is very long. Discrete enquiries suggest that whoever it was had help from the local thieves guild, but that’s all we know.”

“And what does this have to do with me?” you say finally.

“Me? A novice Paladin, that’s crazy!” you say “I mean while I will certainly assist in whatever way I can, I assume I'm not the last hope you have in retrieving the horn?
Why not a Paladin of Konig, or an army?”

Once again, the four-headed thing before you exchanges looks “We are sending an army” explains Priestess Hapswith “But right now, no one knows that the Horn is missing, and it is vital to the defence of the realm that we keep it that way.”

“The Paladins of Konig” explains Miclan quietly “will be supposedly hunting for my sceptre of office – an important, though non-magical, piece of church property, the High Priest of Konig will publically denounce the theft tomorrow and state that thefts from the Church will not be tolerated and set the Paladins searching for the sceptre. Our political enemies will assume that the Church of Konig is simply throwing its weight around, those who stole the Horn will be watching out for Paladins of Konig, and our enemies will be none the wiser.”

“Well why not raid the local thieves guild for accomplices?” you ask “surely someone there knows something.”

“I’m sure they do” says Gartus, leaning back on his chair, “and our enquiries are progressing, but a public raid on the guild could drive whoever helped them underground, one of my agents within the guild has already been killed for asking the wrong questions, we are focused on the guild, but we feel discretion is the best policy.”

“Well then, how am I supposed to find a Horn so well-protected that senior wizards can’t locate it?”

Three of the four priests look at Miclan, he shifts “The Church of Konig has the power to petition Konig to add a person to the roster of heroes” he says “To avoid frivolous requests, there are a strict set of rules laid out for a hero to be added to the Horn, heroism, exceptional courage, fighting for a righteous cause and so on.”
>>
>>33081801
“Normally a hero is added to the roster posthumously” he says as he starts to adopt a lecturing tone “But it has been done a handful of times with a living hero, a living hero is not summoned when the Horn is blown, but at all times has an infallible, and, we believe, unblockable sense of the Horn’s direction, though not distance or location.”

Wait, it sounds like he intends to-

“These restrictions govern adding mortals to the Horns roster, no such restriction apply for angels to be added to the roster – and there are a few angels on the roster – I believe, that your angelic heritage will allow us to add you to the roster of heroes, making you one of the Heroes of the Horn of Alzurad.”

Also how exactly does the horn work? I mean, to what extent have the summoned heroes their free will? Are they compelled to attack whoever the hornblower directs them to, or are they operating on the assumption that wielder of the horn is worthy of their assistance and follow their discretion when attacking? Can they turn against the wielder of the horn if they find him unworthy for whichever reason?

Okay, that explains why they want us, in particular.

Would being added to the roster essentially force our character to answer the call after we die, or does it work differently since we're being added while still living?

Would whoever has the horn be able to command a living hero?

Can one be removed from the roster, or is it a for life kind of thing?

These are questions directly to you, OP, so don't have Sireyi ask them.

Summoned heroes must appear when the Horn is blown, but have free will at all times.

They have no special knowledge about who blows the Horn, but they are accustomed to being summoned by a priest or paladin of Konig.

Whilst you live, the Horn cannot summon you, when you die, you will be forever tied to the Horn.

You cannot be removed from the Horns roster without Konigs intervention.

Heroes of the Horn can always recognise a fellow Hero of the Horn upon sight, though they gain no special knowledge about that person.

You will know instantly in the Horn is blown, being able to hear it over any distance.

All of this is OOC knowledge, not even the Priests of Konig know this.

That seems kinda rude, I mean, if people declared heroes by a god haven't earned their rest, who has?

>You cannot be removed from the Horns roster without Konigs intervention.

What about the goddess of joy, does she get a say in that? We're her champion after all.
>>
>>33081978

Well presumably followers of the warrior god might see opportunity to do battle once more as a pleasant workout.
>>
>>33082016
They should still be allowed to take themselves off the roster, some of the ones declared heroes probably didn't say they wanted to be or have special circumstances like us.
Plus, they evidently don't have to be followers of Konig, just have his approval.
Not to mention that people could always have a change of heart about the whole deal and the 'eternally bound to be summoned' thing.
>>
“I realise that this is a lot to take in” says Priestess Hapswith “But I can think of no better candidate for this task, indeed, you being a new paladin will lead the thieves to discount you. You would be officially travelling on a non-specific quest for the good of the Church of Velya. We will provide you with letters of authority from myself and the others to help you smooth your way, allow you to draw upon Church funds are required.”

As you sit there in stunned silence, she continues “Of course, you must act with discretion – using very large amounts of funds, or purchasing the most expensive equipment could draw attention. We have contacted the heads of the local adventurers guilds and told them that you may be along to possibly hire some of their newer members – as would be expected of a novice Paladin like yourself going on a quest.”

“You should avoid the Thieves Guild at all cost, but the Warriors or Mages could provide you with useful allies, and if you wanted, any of the clerics of the Churches would go with you.”

“And, as an absolute, an unbroken rule, you can never tell anyone, not your companions, not your friends, not your lover, the true purpose of your quest.”

>I don’t have a lover
>This is a lot to take in but, yes, I accept this quest.

>>
>>33082057
>This is a lot to take in but, yes, I accept this quest.
>>
>>33082042
While they can be summoned, they don't have to do anything. I suppose that there are enough heroes already that they can choose the willing ones.
>>
>>33082057
>>This is a lot to take in but, yes, I accept this quest.

>>
>>33082057
>I don’t have a lover
>This is a lot to take in but, yes, I accept this quest.

>>33082069
So, it works like the army draft in WW2, start with volunteers, only take less willing heroes if you really need more.
>>
>>33082057
>I suppose I will do this either way, but are you sure you cannot remove me from the rooster later? I don't think I even want to be a hero of the warrior god, no offense intended.
>>
>>33082042

Well presumably when you're in the afterlife, you can petition the god of war more easily and directly as a recognized warrior hero - thus securing Honig's intervention if it's desired.

It might even be that Honig won't send a warrior that doesn't feel like it, or if he finds a warrior unworthy, he will send a battle angel resembling said warrior to preserve image of his church, although that would seem not right with a honorable god. So I'm assuming that the priest will simply commune with the warrior god and get [x] told whether a hero is suitable for being writen in.

Did (m)any such interventions happen, I mean 'retiring' heroes from the list, OP?
>>
>>33082097
>Did (m)any such interventions happen, I mean 'retiring' heroes from the list, OP?

In the official Church history? no, all of the heroes are impossibly courageous and humble and willing to serve in any way Konig asks.

In reality, as befits a warrior Church, Konigs followers have sometimes fought questionable battles, a dozen or so heroes have resigned in protest at one time or another.

>>
>>33082130
Makes sense, any nation that has the horn would be able to use it and a lot of the heroes wouldn't fight their own homelands.
Presumably, Konig accepts heroes from kingdoms other than the one we're in, right?
What's up with a kingdom being able to rely on a divine relic owned by Konig's church for defense, anyway?
>>
>>33082093
>>33082142
A good question

Would you like to ask whether being put on the roster is a good idea now, or ask later?
>>
>>33082172

Well either now or in private with our priestess.

Probably better now. But it's probably unavoidable, since horn powers are our only lead apparently.
>>
>>33082156
>What's up with a kingdom being able to rely on a divine relic owned by Konig's church for defense, anyway?

Hoooo, politics. Saint Alzured was born years ago near what is now the capital city, Dornmer.

The Church holds the Horn there (officially) because it's close to where Alzured was born, and where he was buried.

The Church is only supposed to use the Horn against evil foes: Orc invasions, giant incursions, evil dragons, that demon portal that opened a dozen years ago, etc.

But in the past it has been used as a defensive (and offensive) weapon against other human-ruled kingdoms.

Doing so has led to the Church almost splintering into several smaller churches over the issue.

The current (official) doctrine is that it can only be used to defend against truly evil foes, and that it should be used to defend any kingdom with a significant Church presence.
>>
“This is a lot to take in” you say slowly “but, yes, I accept this quest.”

“Thank you child” says Priestess Hapswith, as the other Priests also offer their thanks. In a barely audible whisper that you think only you hear she adds “And may Velya have mercy upon you.”

Priest Miclan stands up and approaches you, with a bolt of fear you realise he intends to add you to the roster now, however it is done.

“Wait” you say, holding your hands up “Will Velya even approve of me becoming an eternal champion of Konig?”

Everyone looks at Priestess Hapswith, who looks away briefly “I have prayed on this matter and I have received no indication that the Goddess does not approve, I believe this is the right choice.”

Miclan lays both hands upon your head and murmurs a prayer under his breath for several minutes. Nothing seems to happen, and then you hear a masculine voice filled with authority and nobility say “Welcome, Hero of the Horn”.
Suddenly it feels like giant hammers hit you in both ears at once, driving you to your knees in pain, distantly you hear someone screaming and you wonder if it’s you. You black out.

You come round a few moments later with Priestess Hapswith crouched over you “are you alright child?” she asks, concern evident in her voice.

“Y-yes” you say and surprisingly, you are, you’re not bleeding from the ears and their no lingering pain, you can feel a distant tugging, pulling you South, and maybe slightly to the east.

“Well” says Gartus, rising from his seat “I think that settles it, when can you get started?”

“I think I can feel the Horn” you say, pointing “it’s that way”.
“Alsterport” says Halthan, nodding and stroking his long beard “Yes, a good place for the thief to leave the kingdom, We’ll tell the harbourmaster to search every ship leaving.”
“And may I just add” you say, crossly “Konig doesn’t mess around, Priest Miclan, that hurt, why didn’t you warn me?”
“Anticipating pain makes it worse, young one.” He lectures.
Aaaaaah! Followers of Konig, why must everything be a test of courage for them?
“Well, I guess I’d better hire some adventurers” you conclude “and maybe some supplies, where could I buy some weapons and armour?”
“The Warriors Guild typically buys the best weapons and armour the Town blacksmiths can forge” says Miclan.
“And the Mages Guild offers enchanted weapons and armour” adds Halthan.
“But nothing too flashy” cautions Gartus “You can’t be drawing attention to yourself”
Of course as the priest of the richest temple financing you, clearly he can’t be worried about the cost, clearly.

"Were can I hire someone with skills like a thief?" you ask.

Halthan chuckles "Well, despite the Thieves Guild constantly disagreeing, the Mages Guild have claimed Bards as their own, since they wield sorcery after a fashion. A Bard won't be as good as a full thief, but will have some similar skills."

For an investigator, having an ally in the shadows is indispensable. But that's not for party purposes.

As far as party members are the issue, we'll likely need someone capable of scouting, opening locks and avoiding traps. Not necessarily a thief, but someone of similar skillset. A scout or a guard operative then?

>>
After Priestess Hapswith dismisses you, you set out for the Mages Guild, a letter of instruction in your pocket.

A large, sprawling affair, the actual guild covers a large area, but you’ve been told to head to the large central tower. Once you get there the clerk behind the desk looks over the letter before sending a runner to fetch Magister Dast, Master of Apprentices.

About 10 minutes later a blocky-looking older man in a patched red robe comes bustling up.
“Ah, Paladin Sireyi” he says, all smiles, and shaking your hand “Yes, I was told you’d want to hire some of our more advanced students, I’ve had then prepare themselves, come this way. Now, who would you want to meet first, the Wizards, the Sorcerers, or the Bards?”

you know, people are going to choose depending on the NPC personality mainly anyway and not their power and usefulness. So, it may be better just to show us the candidates. I think it is obvious that we will at least check out the Bards
>>
“What the difference?” you ask “I mean, I know in general terms, but I’d like your views”

“Ah, the age-old question” says Magister Dast, stroking his scraggly beard “First off, anyone with magical talent tends to have it show in two broad ways: small and controllable, and big and powerful.”
“Wizards are the first one, we lack the raw power of the Sorcerer and so we make up for it by being able to turn our magic to lots of different uses, a generalist if you will, though plenty of wizards focus on a single area of study. A wizards biggest danger is to himself – if we lose control of a spell, or try to channel too much power we risk killing ourselves or burning out our powers.”

“Sorcerers are the second, they have raw power but not the finesse or control of a wizard, their powers also tend towards broad themes, such as being the master of a single element, or type of magic. A sorcerers biggest danger is to those around him, Sorcerers can only burn out their powers by channeling truly vast amounts of power, but if they lose control they can hurt those around them.”

“Bards, Bards are somewhere in between, their powers are not as strong as a sorcerers, nor as easily trained as a Wizards, so we encourage them to pick up a broader range of skills such as learning how to fight, or training with the Thieves Guild, to help them better succeed at life.”

“Does that help you decide?” He asks

>>
“I think I’d like to meet the Bards First of all” you say.

“Well then, follow me” saying Masister Dast, leading you through a confusing maze of corridors to a classroom, talking all the way.

“We have two candidates I’d really say are ready to try their first trip into the wider world.”

Fanyil Merryweather
Fanyil is an excellent fighter with a rapier, is very agile and his skills at picking apart locks and traps are top of the class. His magic ability is so-so, about the only magic thing he’s really good at is charm spells. Weakness? He’d have you believe he has none, but he loses focus when there is a pretty woman around. He’s had to buy magical healing three times now, when he had no visible wounds.

Janxi
I’m not really sure where Janxi came from, we don’t get many folk with her colouring around here. She was fished out of the sea after a shipwreck as a child and left with us. She’s got a natural talent for moving quietly and can slip into the smallest cracks. Tough, dedicated and loyal but a bit aloof, like she’s better than everyone else. Her magical skills are confusing, some things she grasps easily, others she struggles with, and there’s no telling which will be which until she tries it.

He finally users you into the classroom, were a well-dressed young man with blond, well groomed hair and perfectly tailored clothing is sat with a short young woman with dark hair and a face that doesn’t show much expression.

“Ah, Fanyil, our top fencer, and Janxi, our best infiltrator” says Magister Dast proudly.”This is Paladin Sireyi”.
Both rise smoothly to their feet, Janxi acknowledges the compliment with a nod and Fanyil pipes up “Magister Dast is too kind, I’m very good with a blade but I’d not say I’m the ‘best’ in my class-” he cuts off at a glare from Magister Dast.

>Janxi

I like them both, but I guess I'd be leaning towards Janxi. How good is she at lockpicking/trap disabling?
>>
“So Janxi” you address yourself to the young woman “What sort of magic are you good at? How good is your fencing? What would you say you excel at?”

Janxi responds in clipped Common, dropping each word precisely into place “I’m best at concealment magic and using magic to distract foes. I don’t do very well at fighting with a sword, but I am better with knives. I would say I am best at getting into places and out, unseen.”

“And Fanyil” you say “Tell me about yourself”

He takes a moment to adjust his hair “Well, I am, ah, almost the best in the class at fencing, I can pick any lock or disarm any trap, my magical skills are very good” He leans forward and winks at you “But I excel at...persuading people to do what I need them to. In short, I’m good at everything.”

“Janxi” you switch your attention back to the young woman “How good are you at picking looks and disabling traps?”
“Good enough” she responds “Better than most in the class”

“And both of you” you finish “What do you expect from adventure?”

Fanyil jump in first “To meet new people, to go to interesting places, to experience life.”

Janxi thinks before answering “To find out who I am”

“Thank you both for your time” you say “Is there anything else you’d like to tell me about yourselves?” they both shake their heads.

“Well Magister Dast” you say, “I’ll need to think carefully about whom to pick, shall we meet the wizards now?”

“Right this way” he says, leading you to another classroom and describing the wizards on the way. “Again, I’ve picked our two top students for you to meet.”

Jerome Haltwise
Jerome is one of our top alchemists, his spellwork isn’t great but he can make a potion do almost anything you need it to. He grew up in town, the son of dye-workers and he keeps asking to be sent to see the world, if nothing else, he’ll be eager. His weakness is his curiosity and lack of caution. He’s still regrowing his eyebrows since his last explosive experiment.

Isla Wendmore, of the House of Wendmore
Isla is a young but dedicated wizard. She always completes all her projects without any delays and her spellwork is technically perfect. She lacks raw power in her spells though, and sometimes is beaten by more talented classmates who don’t have to work as hard though. Unlike most nobles she hates talking about her family, not sure why.

He leads you into a classroom where a young man in stained clothing is feverishly writing something down, and a young woman is sat calmly, awaiting your arrival.

I'm currently leaning towards the dark ninja. The fencer would be good as a party-face, but we already have a party face (us). The only benefit he has is his lock picking and trap finding. Both of which the ninja can do, in addition to sneaking around better and having some useful magic.

>potion maker
I have absolutely no idea how useful that would be in this setting. How quickly can Jerome make potions, especially if he doesn't have a laboratory and can only use what ingredients he has at hand or can get wherever we are at the moment.

>Weak utility wizard
Utility is what I'm looking for in a wizard. This is an investigation / stealth mission. If we need muscle, we will just give the location of the horn to the paladins of Konig.

I think we should take Janxi for her rogue skills and Isla as a utility wizard, then hit the Fighters Guild for some muscle.

Something else I've been thinking of since the last thread, a way to help improve the image of our Goddess. We simply become more visible and famous, and remain a virgin. It would make those detractors that call her the Goddess of Whores seem like fools when her best known champion is the purest of holy virgins.

“Jerome” you ask “How easy will it be for you to acquire ingredients for, and make, potions on the road?”
“Er, most of what I use can be found in the wilds” he responds “But I’ll usually need a few hours in a decent lab to mix them, I’ve never tried making potions whilst travelling” he looks thoughtful

“Isla” you ask “Are you any good at charm or stealth spells?”
“I, I yes, I can do those reliably” she says, dropping her gaze and not meeting youe eyes “though mine aren’t very strong.”
“Ok” you say “How about fighting?”
“M, my quarterstaff skills are pretty good” she says, again not meeting your eyes “My teacher says I’m good enough to train with the Warriors Guild if I want to.”

You don’t think you recognise her, but from the way she’s acting, she might recognise you.

“And what do you both expect from adventure?” you ask.

Jerome blinks a few times and then says “Why, to learn of course, I’m sorry, was that the right answer?”

Isla looks down and mumbles something “I’m sorry, I didn’t catch that” you say, she then stares you straight in the eyes and says “Freedom” (What is her damage? Roll Fellowship to figure this out, 1d20+5)

“Jerome, what sort of scientific interests do you have, aside from Alchemy I mean?”

He thinks about this for a moment “Well I’d really like to find out how living things make more of themselves” he says “Theories of spontaneous generation don’t really hold up when you consider Hubbells Law of.....” and then you get lost in the technical jargon.

After you scrape your gooey brains back into your skull you ask “Isla, any sorts of spells you find easiest to cast?”
She looks down again “There’s not really any spells I’m bad at casting” she mumbles “But I suppose I’m good at spells that help me move around, like climbing spells, and increasing my speed.”

You’re good enough at reading emotional states to realise what’s up with Isla – Hero Worship, of you.

You’ve no idea why, you cannot recall meeting her before.

But you can recall fellow novices in training, looking up to you because you’re a half-angel, like you’re somehow purer and better than other people, following you around, imitating you, trying to be you.

“I’m Paladin Sireyi” you calmly explain, totally not scared.
“Oh” he says at a more normal volume as you turn around to see a broad man with thick arms, bald with scars up and down his arms and on his hands.
“I’m Sigur, you’ll be wanting to meet the trainees I’ve got” He says, “Follow me this way m’lady” He leads you deeper into the training grounds, pausing occasionally to shout at young men and women in training, when they fail to meet his impossible standards.

As you approach a training hall, you see him spot a young man, hacking away in a half-hearted way at a practise dummy, Sigur pauses and draws breath, you wince in anticipation of the verbal reaming that guy is going to get. The Sigur pauses, breathes out and says to himself “poor lad”.

“Right” he says to you “Not one of my cadets is fit to lick a real soldiers boots but I’m told you’re the forgiving sort, so let me tell you about the least worthless of my cadets.”

Sir Andrew Malsmouth, Knight of the Realm
Having just won his knighthood, Sir Andrew hails from a line of minor nobility and excels at fighting with a sword and shield, or fighting from horseback using a lance and shield, he prefers to wear heavy armour.
Exceptionally polite and honourable, perhaps his greatest flaw is his desire to see the best in everyone – he has been the target of tricks and pranks by his fellow students.

Rathgurd Snakefist, of the Snakefist Clan
Rathgurd came to the Kingdom of Dornmer from a distant barbarian tribe, determined to hone his skills for battle. His size and strength are impressive, and he can swing that giant axe around like a toy. He’s strong, tough and honest – if he agrees to serve you he will stay loyal. His weakness is his temper, he is easily provoked and won’t back down.
>>
>>33083854
Gilyan Thatcher
Gilyan is a local girl who always hung around the Guild, even as a child. As a young girl she was forever taking practise weapons of the rack and swinging them around. As soon as she was old enough, she started training here. Despite her small size she handles that spear like a professional, and I’d bet on her against many more experienced warriors. Her weakness is her lack of adaptability, she doesn’t react to new situations well, and has never been more than a dozen miles out of town.

You enter the training hall where your three potential recruits are: A young man in heavy armour going through sword and shield drill, a muscled mountain of a man ruining a poor training dummy with a huge axe, and a young, no wait, that can’t be right, she looks like she’s 12, a very short young woman moving a spear around as though it’s an extension of her body.

“Cadets!” bellows Sigur “Attention!”

All three stop what they’re doing, come running over and snap to attention in front of Sigur.

>Knight of the Realm
Uses a heavy armor, which is nice given that he would have to tank in a fight. Probably draws a lot of attention though, which means he cannot go with our bard on stealth missions.
>Thatcher
Miss Thatcher would not be the best fit in fights given that she might have trouble drawing the attention of several opponents until we can dispatch them. Still, her small frame and light build would be highly useful if we sent her on support duty with a sneaky bard.

I say we take the either the knight and the girl, or no one at all.

Aren't you a bit short for a stormtrooper? (no, wait, don't do this)

>all of them
What is best in life?
Nah, I'm kidding.
What do you expect from adventure? (Maybe ask the drillmaster to leave us in private to hear the answer?)
What makes a person right?
(I'm trying to gauge how they act during negotiations that might require concessions or compromise seen as dishonorable. Out of the three, Andrew looks best at a glance, since Rathgurd's short temper might be a danger to everyone including the mission itself.)
>>
HIDDEN OPTION UNLOCKED

Before you address the cadets you ask Sigur “Sigur who was that young man you didn’t yell at?”.
His face takes on look of pity for a moment before it resumes its normal scowl.

“Ahh, Matthias, poor Matthias, not his fault of course. An orphan left at our gates, Matthias was a guild lad, he can handle any weapon like a pro, takes instruction well, was liked by his classmates. But whilst out on manoeuvres he got separated from his training team and got mauled by a werewolf. By the time we got a priest too look at him, twas too late, the disease had settled on him truly. Nobody will trust him now. We’ll keep him on as long as we can but, if it looks like he’ll be a danger to the others, he’ll have to go. We can’t let him train with the others, he’s too fast, and too strong, even I have trouble beating him. We lock him away come full-moon, and he’s never lost control or attacked anyone, but you can’t take risks. A pity really, he was such a promising lad.”

“Armsmaster Sigur, if I could have a moment with the cadets” you say
“Right you are m’lady” he says, and stalks outside, grumbling about useless lazy cadets.
You walk in front of the cadets as they stand at attention “What do you expect from adventure?” you ask.

Sir Malsmouth responds first “To prove my worth as a knight, to protect the helpless, to defeat evil” sounds like he memorised that.

Rathgurd takes longer to answer “To fight, to get better at fighting, to be able to return to my tribe the strongest.”

Finally Gilyan says quietly “To master the Way of the Spear.”

Warriors...you ask them what they want and they all say ‘be the best’.

“What makes a person right?” you ask
Sir Malsmouth jumps in first “His actions according to his code of honour, obedience to his liege lord, respecting the gods” Does he have these answers written down somewhere?

Rathgurd “Might makes right, the strong rule and the weak obey.”

Gilyan “The goals you are trying to accomplish, and the methods you use to get there.”

OOC

Curing Werewolves BEFORE the first change is mid-tier magic.

Curing werewolves after their first change is Miracle-tier magic.

Lesser magic attempts to cure werewolves work, but kill the target in the process.

Werewolves are stronger and faster then normal in any form, they heal fast from anything except silver or fire.

Werewolves can lose control and shift at any time, but they always shift during full moon.

A werewolf in man-wolf or full-wolf form is a mindless beast, 99% of the time.

1% of victims are strong-willed enough, stubborn enough or lucky enough to keep most of their wits about them once changed.

You decide he needs a little encouragement “CADET MATTHIAS ANSWER THE QUESTION YOU WORTHLESS PILE OF MAGGOT CRAP”

He glares straight at you “I wouldn’t expect any damn thing from an adventure because I’m never going to be able to go on one, but if I was, it would be to find a way to get cured, or learn to live with being a monster.”
“And I think making a person right is always doing the right thing, no matter how hard, no matter if it hurts, no matter if nobody cares.”
His hands are clenched into fists.

“It hasn’t been easy” he grates, “But I’ve never changed outside a full moon.”
“And during a full-moon”
“During a full-moon I fight the change as much as I can but I never stop it, then I just lie down and try not to think about anything, try to ignore the urges, it’s horrible” he finishes, looking away in shame.

You’ve heard that some sufferers of the disease are able to control themselves during the change, but it’s an incredible rare thing, and even the churches only proved a handful of cases. Nevertheless for those that could, most found a sort of peace with their condition, able to change without madness, though it often took years of living with the curse.
In short, if he can control himself it would be very rare, but possible.
“So you don’t lose control you just feel urges, what sort of urges?”

“No” answers Matthias, looking inwards, “I never lose control, I just feel so angry, I feel the need to fight, to feed, to f-” he stops, realising the other cadets are hanging on his every word.
And then he blushes a bright red.
“Is there anything else you wanted?” he asks, “or can I go now?”

You go back to the Mages Guild to chat with Magister Dast “I think my mind is made up, but just so I don’t miss anything, can you tell me about the sorcerers?”
“Of course, of course” he says as the two of you chat in his office.

Fion Deliya, caller herself ‘Iceheart’.
‘Iceheart’ is a master of cold magic, she can freeze her foes with a gesture, launch icy shards, construct walls of ice. If you want ice to do something, this is your girl. She’s not cruel, but she does seem uncaring, like it doesn’t matter if folk get hurt or not.

Thurian
Red skin, those horns on his head and that long slender tail leave no doubts that Thurian has something infernal in the family history. He’s a hardworking lad but the other students don’t like him and he keeps mostly to himself. Thurian is skilled at direct-force magics – hurling bolts of pure magical energy, creating shields of it, using telekinesis to throw his foes, he can do all of that. He’s moody and a bit of a loner though, might not mesh well with a group.

Since the plan seems to be to fit Matthias with an obedience collar, this seems more likely
>>
I have to say, this is the first time I'm in a quest were it feels as if the whole player-base nigh immediately agrees on a choice but we still take ages before actually voting. I mean, it took me seconds after each set of characters was introduced to decide which one sucks and which one is ok and which one is best choice. And there has been no controversial position other than a short-lived "magic users only".
>>
>>33084749
with the obedience collar, can he maintain control with it on, and only activate it if he loses control?

Essentially yes, the device would be a backstop measure, as it would only kick in once he actually loses it.

Hidden character revealed.

Voting is over, this is just to sate any lingering curiosity

Haveril, allright, him. He was a good student until about 10 years ago when he and a couple of other students decided to steal a nobles ring for a dare.
Turns out the noble was actually a vampire, drain the others dry and left Haveril for dead, he crawled in here and alerted us. The vampire was chased off and Haveril....changed. He’s a vampire now, we keep him fed with animal blood, but we can’t keep him here forever. Because of what he is, his speed with a sword is unbelievable, and he can use magic to command rats, bats and wolves as his servants and spies.
Haveril looks about 12 (the age he was turned at) but is far stronger and faster than an adult human.

I'm sorry that most species tend to have half their members as men?
Would you prefer he sent only women, so that you could accuse him of railroading us into /u/?
Two out of three in the party are already women, and there was a female character in every choice.
The bard was an obvious comedic relief character.
The half-orc didn't do or expect anything remotely romantic.
the werewolf wants to fuck everything thanks to his affliction, not us in particular.
His mind is also just as consumed by feeding and fighting, and even then only when shifted.
Also, Sireyi is basically 12/10, so the same could be said of anyone, not just Matthias.
>>
>>33085634
What are you even arguing?
I'm simply pointing out that the chance shota vampire wouldn't be a romance option (consider that by being a vampire you can do the 'actually 500 years old' thing to remove skeeviness as well) is extremely low based on how many other male characters seem obviously magical realm.
>>
>>33085634
>Would you prefer he sent only women, so that you could accuse him of railroading us into /u/?
Please, anon. Female characters: all described normally, interact normally, closest you get to /u/ is the chick apparently reverent of us which has had no obvious sexual or romantic underones. Male characters: MC blurting out the kiss part, seducer guy was partly comedy relief sure but still seductive, werewolf mentioned to want sex - notice that unlike female characters, male ones are explicitly sexual - OP frequently mentioning magical realm stuff when male characters get brought up...
There's nothing wrong with romancing dudes, but pretending the OP isn't obviously pushing that way with the choices is naive as hell.

Now you're being unfair. The priests and the villagers were very non-magical, with the swashbuckler his attitude was fairly in-character and the alchemist and the fighters seemed completely tame. Your argument hangs on one word from the werewolf, and implied at that, after being asked a direct question.

I think confirmation bias is strong with you.
>>
>>33085675
The vampire is far and away more magical realm than any other character you listed, and thus I didn't feel the need to respond to that.
What I was arguing, was a perceived attack on OP in regards to trying to push dudes at us.

>>33085720
The reason male characters are explicitly sexual is because of the relative attractiveness of the MC, and if you think Faylin was seductive you need to get your head checked.
She blurted out the kiss thing is because it's a turn of phrase in human society, and got worried that Braggedin would take it the wrong way.
>>
>>33085787
>One word from the werewolf
And the half-orc was obviously sexual from descriptions, MC-reactions and, again, QM meta-posts. Seduction being 'in-character- matters what exactly? Still an example. Werewolf was implied, seriously? There's literally only one word that could have been. On the other hand, ladies are all basically asexual so far. Again, I don't have a problem with it but c'mon, it's right there.
>>
>>33085831
Maybe that's because the ladies aren't into other ladies, anon?
>>
>>33085812
>if you think Faylin was seductive
What does it matter if I thought he was seductive in his brief scenes? He was EXPLICITLY DESCRIBED as a womanizer, his bio came with fucking magical STDs. How is that not a character with explicit sexuality?
>>
>>33085860
'Seductive' would imply either you or Siyeri found his behavior in any way capable of seduction, and Siyeri likely did not.
Being a womanizer and acting on his sexual orientation are just the way his character would behave, and that's what OP writes, he doesn't make the womanizer suddenly turn into an asexual doll just because you're the MC.
>>
I'm happy with how QM has been writing the characters and think they are done well. I'm rather happy with the whole thing so far.
>>
>>33085921

I think the issue here was excess of information given by the master magician.

I'm ok with it though, it was information relevant to player choice, not enough to break a suspension of disbelief, for me at least.
>>
>>33085921
The point is only the male characters get these mentions. Hence my assertion that the OP is obviously pushing for us to get with the dudes.
Saying 'well maybe the chicks aren't interested' just reinforces my point.
>>
>>33085923
I have no complaints with the characters except for the stupid werewolf/vampire thing, this whole thing started because the idea that the dudes are pretty magical realm was apparently controversial somehow, not a complaint about how the QM runs things.
>>
>>33085952
OP has done other things with the character not explicitly mentioned in chargen, is it so wrong for an 18 year old girl to be interested in the opposite sex, at least to some degree?
Is it so strange an incredibly attractive woman would draw all kinds of male attention?

>>33085968
The vampire thing was only magical realm if OP had any idea we would take it that way, and if he was that magical realm, he wouldn't have explicitly stated that we aren't getting anything lewder than kissing.
I don't even consider werewolves magical realm unless they start doing lewd things in their shifted or half-shifted forms.
>>
>>33086018
>The vampire thing was only magical realm if OP had any idea we would take it that way, and if he was that magical realm, he wouldn't have explicitly stated that we aren't getting anything lewder than kissing.
