Death. It isn’t really that bad. Still moving, thinking in a normal capacity, the flesh just doesn’t regenerate like it used to. Ah, well, nothing new flesh can’t fix. Oh, and that new bundle of fibrous meat! What a treat that would have been. Ah, maybe there will be another chance down the road to sample that supple, young body. Blood sweet to the last drop. Oh, what an addition it will be!

Defensive, so defensive the young King is! He has two sisters, that’s one to spare. He only needs one after all. Well, we only need one of them.

Your stomach growls hungrily, made empty already by the need for new flesh. Bits of you fall into the ground below with each leap forward, revealing more of your almost crystallized inner skeleton; the glow of the tendrils lighting your way through increasingly dark skies. Pain cycles through your body with every pulse of your fetid heart. And your fetid brain’s reasoning collapses more and more as you hop along, further into the wilds. The two are in rhythm, pulsating to the same primal need. Anything at this point will do. It needs to feed.

[] The city’s sights and sounds. Reflexes, reflexes!
[] The coast, peaceful and serene meditation makes for delicious minds.
[] The forest, hardworking lumberjacks and smithies. Good muscle!

You walk. And walk. And you walk some more. It’s followed by more walking, and proceeded in kind with walking. Your future holds more walking, and your preordained past, as surprising as this might be, is walking. The complex is definitely not as close as first imagined, and to make matters worse, the group doesn’t seem all too pleased at having to walk such a distance. To make matter worse, Inumuta has decided to try and cheer everyone up with a song from his smart phone. Or just to piss you off. None of the others seemed bothered by it, so you let it pass.

Tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DD_NCM_RJs

“It should be over this next hill.” You huff, as you jog up what you hope is the final rise in the landscape leading to the manor.

“Let’s hope so.” Satsuki seems tired as well, although she wouldn’t show it. You’ve been walking for around two hours or so at this point along the single-lane road leading to the complex.

“Yeah, my feet are killing me!” Ryuuko chimes in.

“Mine, too!” Nonon agrees. Both of them seems quite out of breath.

Gama remains as stoic as ever, and Inumuta seems to be enjoying himself, snapping his fingers along to the music. The same damn song for two hours now. For some reason, you are beginning to desire some sort of nuclear winter, just to cool things off for a bit.

As you surmount the hill, the restored majesty of the Kiryuin manor comes into view. The white marble columns reach far into the sky, marking the long circular U-drive that connects to the snaking road you’re presently walking upon. The others catch up to you, and slowly assemble at the top of the last hill between you and the manor. Satsuki seems particularly taken aback.

“There will be time later for gawking. I’m hoping it won’t need to be rebuilt from the ground up any time soon.” You say as you begin descending down the final stretch of asphalt toward the inlaid brick driveway.

“I’m surprised to the extent of the restoration, to say the least. I’ve heard that REVOCS isn’t exactly doing too well as of late.” Satsuki comments, leading the pack down the slope.
“Ah, this was from the family’s personal fortune. I’ve had to divest quite a bit in order to keep the company afloat. You would be surprised at the various clauses that are included in most insurance policies. None of them seemed to have an exception for an alien acting on its own behest, though.”

“Which would be a lie.” Satsuki shoots back.

“A profitable one, though. And not entirely untruthful.” You quip.

“And whaddya mean by that, huh?” Ryuko remarks.

You stop in your tracks, halfway down the drive of the restored glory that is the Kiryuin manor. Beautiful gardens surround both sides of the drive, leading up to an impressive multi-storied façade. The main building was originally modeled after the Palace of Versailles. Ragyo, seeing the end in sight, operated on the structure to match her own tastes, throwing away over two hundred years of history and Kiryuin legacy; having rebranded it into a ‘modern’ style. Disgusting. But it has been corrected now; those threads unwound for ‘fashion’ have been retaught and refit, the dress matching purpose again in both form and function.

“You both seem to be under the impression that Ragyo was acting completely independently. That is simply not true.”

“And what are you implying, Hinode?” Satsuki questions.

“Come, let’s talk once we’re indoors.” You say, restarting your trudge to the front door.
>>
>>33233110

Slowly you progress towards the entrance of the manor, finally on the steps leading to the entrance. A pair of engraved oaken doors meet the group, showcasing L'Homme qui marche, surrounded by the phrase Esse Quam Videri, circling round the image.
The doors open, and Mitsuzō Soroi stand before you. He gives a slight bow, which Satsuki and the rest of the group returns in kind. Strange to bow to a butler, even if he is the maître d'hôtel. Tea would be great right about now, the problem is, where to drink it…

“Soroi, would you kindly prepare tea and bring it to the library?”

“Of course, sir.” The old guard bows and walks down the hallway, towards the kitchen.

“Come, follow me. If we are to have a serious talk, we should converse where the answers likely lie.” You say, motioning down one of the side halls.

Faces of spirits long past surround you as you walk down the gilded hallway. Their will still lingers, unfulfilled and waning. One after another, those specters surround you in the wide hallway, each a step forward for humanity; each a vanguard against the ‘Original’ Life Fiber. They pass before you, their presence felt with every step down the hall, whispering sweet oblivion into the ears of any listener: visual and audial.

Generals, kings, politicians, scientists… and the final picture, directly facing the library. A portrait you commissioned personally of your father, Soichiro Kiryuin. You, and your sisters, both stop to admire the painting.

“He died to make this all possible. And Ryuko…”

She looks at you expectantly, tears welled up in her eyes. That’s right. You doubt she has ever seen her father before adapting the identity of Isshin Matoi.

“… you never claimed your inheritance, you know.”

“My what?” She asks, confused. Satsuki also turn her attention towards you.

“Your inheritance. Father believed I had switched sides by that point, and he honestly didn’t trust Satsuki either. A pity. Could have saved a lot of wasted effort.” You lament, recollecting the relayed events of Honnouji Academy.

“The only child he could trust would be you. In addition to the numerous patents he held, and the land where his estate once stood, you’re also set to gain a certain bonus promised by the Takarada Conglomerate for the successful annihilation of REVOCS and Planet Cocoon.”

“Wait, what? I’m rich?” She asks, even more confused than before.

“Not quite. The reward was posted and paid, but was used to completely pay for the lease of the Nudist Beach Headquarters, the Naked Sun, and equipment. It was also partially paid out to surviving Nudist Beach members, and the remainder used to settle various suits against Nudist Beach for their extra governmental activities.”

Her face sinks, and looks like someone who just won and lost the lottery all within a minute.

Satsuki then chimes in, “But the land and patents are hers, correct?”

“Yes. She has executive control of the patents. Though, they do have a lien against them.”

“Eh?” Ryuko responds.

“Well, you destroyed a large section of various cities, and were under suit by various governments around the world.”

“FOR WHAT, SAVING THEIR ASS!” Ryuko is flustered at this point.

“Various civil suits surrounding civilian deaths in the wake of Earth’s Hemorrhage. And not you, Ryuko. Satsuki.”

Satsuki stands there, herself a little dumbfounded. “And why wasn’t I informed?”

“Well, it technically doesn’t concern you. The lawsuit was against the Kiryuin family, though your actions were the only ones listed in the lawsuit. A lot of claims of negligence and aiding and abiding the enemy were settled. And since the reward money was posted to our father sans alias, it was used to cover that as well…” You say, in an almost prepared and actuary tone, trailing off toward the end.

“And?” Satsuki asks, expecting more.

“And, well… that wasn’t quite enough to cover it. In addition, the patents were under a public lien, which proposes an unacceptable risk. REVOCS at the time could only afford half of the lien as well…“

Satsuki looks at you frowning even more than usual. “You didn’t.”

You look away, slightly embarrassed. “So, the patents are under joint ownership between the Takarada Conglomerate and REVOCS, both purchasing equal stakes in order to settle all accounts of negligence.”

“So, Takarada, the devil of Osaka, owns our father’s patents?” Satsuki states angrily.

“Half.” You correct her. She glares daggers at you along with the rest of the group. You turn back around, looking away from them, and cough a bit.

“And in order to protect his interest, he appointed a custodian. Someone, ‘that’d take a damn bullet for meh.’

Satsuki’s eyes narrow even more. The daggers in her glare have evolved to swords. “Maiko Ōgure.”
>>
>>33236942
“Yes, that she-devil, no-good, spy. Which is why she is currently ‘employed’ as a courtesy worker. Her real job is to make sure REVOCS doesn’t violate the terms of the dual-ownership agreement.”

“A necessary sacrifice. Shameful, but necessary. I suppose poor leadership will do that.” She dryly states, turning and opening the doors to the library, and taking a seat in the largest reading chair in the room.

Ryuko mumbles something unintelligible about Maiko and ‘dosh lord’ before joining her sister in the chair.

You follow them inside and stand before them, and the sum knowledge of generation of Kiryuins and other, now terminated, families. So, what to begin with?

“So, how about a little family history, then?” You say, strolling over to the family bible, alone on a solid pewter pedestal.
You pick up the large book, and begin to carefully flip through the pages.

“So, Satsuki, I suppose you’ve deduced that our family isn’t Japanese natively?” You ask as you flip casually through various family trees.
“I’ve figured as much. Though we do have some Asiatic features, most traits are European. I would surmise, West European.”

“Correct, correct. French to be exact. Ah, here it is. The split in our family tree.” You hand the book over to the two girls to inspect, pointing out the split in the tree, shown by a rotten apple falling from the stylized apple tree.

You continue to talk as a professor does to his students. “Our family’s heritage begins as Visigoths under the Roman order. Thanks to Roman ingenuity, and a certain lust for marble and iron, the OLF was discovered in a large natural cavern in the Southern mountains of France. Our tribe was the first to make contact with the alien being, and it deemed us acceptable as tools. Unfortunately, our ancestors had different plans, and quickly learned to override its mind controlling effects after being exposed to the central core.”

“The central wha-?” Ryuko asks, looking up from the book, as Satsuki reads intently.

“The central core. It’s the largest part of the beast and serves as its hive mind. Though, sorry to say, what was discovered was only a mere seedling.”
“And what of this split? What is its significance?” Satsuki asks, not even bothering to look up from the ancient tome.

“I was getting to it, but we can revisit the foundations later if you are that curious. We are the direct descendants of Louis XVI, the last King of France. The apple falling is the split in our family line, and our subsequent exile from France. In reality, the French Revolution, the Revolutionary Wars, and even the Napoleonic Wars were all a cover to try and wrest control of the OLF away from our family.”

“The next seventy years of war, failed republics, and restored monarchies were all in relation to a battle between two families, and consequently two factions: Bourbon (The Royalists) and Courtmanche (Republicans/Revolutionaries).”

The look on your sister’s faces seems… surprised? You weren’t really expecting that. The clatter of Inumuta’s fingers on his tablet could vie with a woodpecker in terms of speed. You continue, undaunted.

“At the end, Courtmanche won with the assistance of all the other royal families. But we had already relocated the OLF from Versailles to Japan under cover of a small fleet of Portuguese trader ships.”

“And thus, we were the last surviving link of the once extensive Bourbon family, now Kiryuin clan. Once finally free to search the country for the promised treasure, they found it missing, which only served to send those families and their countries into their own revolutions through spiraling paranoia and fear that one of them had gotten to it first.”
“And what are the names of the other families?” Satsuki asks, visibly shaken by the knowledge. The silence in the room at this point is such that a sewing needle can be heard dropping. And the footsteps of a certain trusty butler.

“Mmm… in a minute. Soroi is arriving with the tea.”

“No, I will not wait, and you will answer me this instant! What are the other families?” She bursts out, in a strange mix of anger and even a hint of apprehension at even asking the question again.

“Please, don’t try to overexert yourself, milady. All answers come in due time.” Soroi says, entering the library and calmly setting a tea tray down in front of the modest collection of not so modest furniture. Eloquently serving each and every person present their own cup of potent black tea, the man leaves without another word.

Silence. The room is left serene and still, each person slowly drinking the foul black liquid. You’ve never been one for bitter tea, but something about it. Maybe the aftertaste that lingers in your mouth long after the flavor’s initial taste has dissipated? Maybe the slight hint of various other flavors, all melding into one comprehensive experience? Maybe it’s the hope that it is an acquired taste, one that will grow with age or time. With your sisters.

You swirl the tea around in its cup, watching the cascading but perfectly synchronized waves twirl in their porcelain saucer. Small bits and pieces of twig and leaf float in the black, consuming sea, wading in and out between the surface and the dark depths of your tray. Such a small ocean to you, such a vast wasteland to the observer.

Again and again you lift the container from the saucer sipping on the still steaming liquid. Slowly the dark depths lighten to a brownish hue. With a single swallow left, it turns to a dark orange. Chamomile.

“Hinode? Are you alright?” Satsuki asks, with a look of concern on her face. It seems the tea has calmed everyone down, as they aren’t as angry or anxious as before.

Just how long how you been sitting there?
