You are Logan Drey, Unchosen Void Knight and liberator of Earth.

For 4 years you’ve fought against the rogue AI that took control of Earth. You were given a momentary reprieve from your battles when you were thrown into someone else’s battles, but you would always have to return sometime.

And return you did.

You went to Earth hoping to scout out its current military status, and wound up getting attacked by a massive Metal Suit containing the core of the AI you’ve been struggling against for so long.

The machine thought it had you beat. It studied you; optimized itself around what it thought you would be capable of, what you once considered to be your limits. But you’re so much more now than you were then.

With the AI defeated and humanity free, the only remaining issue is how to get your people out into the universe at large.

That, and figuring out how to ‘defeat’ a blight on the universe itself. Easier said than done, yes.

But you get closer everyday.

You give the smoking ruins of Franklin a wide berth. According to Vicky the place is a radioactive mess, the bomb that the AI hid inside the metal suit was a nuke. It’ll probably be years before the place is safe enough to live in.

You can see the settlement that the Franklin evacuees built to live in on the horizon, a good distance away from the blast. The settlement is made up entirely of identical little houses; they look to have been built more for function than style.

The desert below you is making you wish you lived somewhere with more interesting landscapes. Unfortunately, Franklin was built in the Nevada desert. According to the history books, Nevada was one of the Oil Age states. Franklin was founded during the end of the chaos that followed the Oil Age’s end. It was named after some guy from the 1800’s. Ben or something…

You never really paid attention during history class… You’d ask Vicky for a rundown, but you’d probably zone out for that too.

>Message received from Parin. Play now?

Parin? Why would Parin be-… Right…

<How long has it been since I left the crossroads?
>3 hours, 4 minutes and 57 seconds.

She must be worried, you were only supposed to be scouting.

<Play it.

Parin’s voice plays in your ear. “Logan, what’s taking you so long? Did something bad happen?”

You pull out your crystal to send a response back, placing it against the charger on your left hand while you think about what to say.

“Got a little carried away and destroyed the AI myself. Little beaten but I’ll live. On the upside, humanity is free. I’m about to go see the people from my old hometown, wanna join?” You say into the crystal.

>Message sent.

You keep flying for a moment, letting your mind wander as you fly. You wonder who actually survived, who you might see again and who you won’t. It’s both depressing and elating all at once.

Vicky breaks you out of your reverie.

You're not gonna have her plunge to her death, are you? That would have been very poor impression of visiting her bf's homeworld for the first time.
>>
You’re about to say yes, when it occurs to you that you’re at least a thousand feet above the ground.

You might try to be all romantic, catching her when she comes out of the rift and carrying her all the way to your destination. But your non-functional left shoulder puts a cap on that plan. With little other recourse, you descend.

It takes a few minutes to reach the ground, you’re being more careful approaching the ground than you were flying away from it. Even though Vicky takes care of the complicated stuff, you still have to get used to balancing on these things.

With your boots safely back on Mother Earth, you open a connection for Parin. While you wait for her to arrive, you wonder what her reaction to your home world will be. Come to think of it, what would a place with no Aether feel like to someone who was born in the ‘normal’ universe?

Your answer comes as a rift opens and Parin emerges.

And immediately clings to you for dear life.

“What the hell was that?” She asks, her voice shaky.

“What was what?” You ask. You think she means something about your planet, but there’s a million different things under that header.

“Out there! The thread I was in cut off and there was… there was nothing! Just the cold, and holy crap is it ever COLD!” She says.

“Welcome to Earth: The only known habitable world beyond the edge of the universe.” You say.

“The edge of the universe? The universe doesn’t have an edge. It doesn’t end.” Parin says.

You smile. “Don’t believe me? Let me show you.” You have Vicky load up the Visio rune, and it hovers t your fingertips. “Now, this is going to be frightening at first. Just remember that the ground is still there.” You pull away from her and poke the runes into her eyes.

“Ow! What the… heck…” Her complaints take a backseat to what she’s seeing and her mouth hangs open. The first thing she seems to notice is you, or rather the lack of you. She raises a hand to your face, touching it lightly to see if it’s still there. Then she notices the abyss behind you.

“Not… no… that…” She whips around to see the universe she knows. “How can…” She sputters, befuddled by what she sees. Then she looks down and panics, shrieking and jumping back into you.

<Vicky, cancel the rune

Parin gasps as her vision returns to normal, then she punches you in the arm. “Warn me before you do that!”

“I did warn you. I said it’d be frightening.” You say bluntly. “So, what do you think now?”

“I think… I think that Gramps needs to see this. Or at least hear about it.” She says.

“We could call him here, if you think he can stand the cold.” You say.

“He probably could…” Parin says, wrapping her arms around you and pushing her face into your chest.

“You gonna call him?” You ask, raising an eyebrow.

“Mmmmmm…” She whines.

“Earth to Parin, you can’t call him if you keep clinging to me like this.” You say.

“But you’re waaaaarm.” She says. “It’s not a physical cold anyway. It’s just an inward sort of off-putting feeling. I don’t think I could explain it… Gramps probably could.”

You pause for a moment. “I’m not cuddling with Nosim so he can study this.” You say jokingly.

She reels back, her expression one of shock. Until she sees you smiling, and she pouts.

You laugh at her. “Just call him already, would you?”

Parin pulls out her calling crystal, glaring at you while she brings it up to your face. “Jerk” She says, before the crystal is charged and she rattles off a message to Nosim about how he should come and check this place out. “There, sent.” She says, putting the crystal back in a pouch at her waist.

“Thank you.” You say, pulling her back into a hug.

“Well… the AI sort of… blew up the city.” You say.

“Is that even possible? I mean… without magic?” Parin asks.

“Yes.” You say, leaving it at that. You don’t really feel like going into the subject of nuclear physics with her right now.

“How are you still alive then? Come to think of it, how did you get all the way out here?” She asks.

“I flew.” You say.

“You… flew?” She asks.

You spread your wings and give the jets a pump. “Flew.”

Parin stares at your new equipment wide-eyed. “Where did you get those?” She asks.

“A piece of the Void Knight’s armor was here. It got left behind when the other pieces scrammed. I got wings out of it. Some sort of sigil-thing.” You say.

“Oh, the back piece. We probably should have told you about tha-“ Parin is cut off by a rift opening to your left. She immediately shoves off of you and brushes herself off.

“Fascinating.” Nosim says as he comes through the rift. “This place. It’s beyond the edge of the universe, isn’t it?” He asks.

“Welcome to Earth. Please save your complaints about how cold it is.” You say.

You give them all a quick rundown of what you’ve found while here: the wings, the edge of the universe, the giant mech. You even go so far as to show them a ‘hologram’ of that last one.

“You fought that?” Jax asks.

“I beat that.” You reply.

“You remembered that you could’ve called for backup at any time, right?” Achillea asks.

“Yes. And I would’ve if I needed it, but the need never arose.” You leave out the part where you got so caught up in your own bloodlust(?) that you didn’t bother calling anyone. “But that’s not important, right now I’m trying to get to the Franklin settlement.”

“On foot?” Jax asks, looking over to where the settlement is on the horizon. “That’d take you a while.”

“No, not on foot.” You say, putting a hand on your face.

“Wings, right. Sorry. Continue.” Jax says.

You sigh. “For now, I’ll fly the rest of the way there. You guys-“

“-Head back to the milestone for now. I’ll call you over when the time is right.” You say.

“Hmm? Why don’t we just wait here?” Parin asks.

“Do you really want to stay here in the weird cold? Besides, we don’t know what effect this has on you guys. I’d rather not risk something weird happening until we know more about this Aetherless place.” You say.

They all seem reluctant, until Nosim speaks up. “Sound logic. We’ll have plenty of time to chat about this later.” He says, cutting a rift into the air with the tip of the cane he carries.

They say their farewells, and one by one exit the planet. Except for Parin, who tells the others that she’ll catch up.

She turns to you and looks at you strangely. “You seem somehow… off.” She says.

“I feel off.” You say, scratching your head. “I’ll admit to being a little apprehensive about this. There are a lot of people in that settlement who I never thought I’d see again.” You say.

She leans in and gives you a peck on the lips. “You’ll be fine. These are your people Logan, and this is what you wanted.” She says. It sounds almost bittersweet coming from her.

Before you can reply, she’s off. And you’re left standing alone in the middle of the desert again.

>continued
>>
You shake your head and spread your wings. With a grin, you shake off any doubts and shoot upwards as quickly as you can.

There’s a certain freedom afforded to you when you have wings. You’ll admit, it certainly does feel good to leave the ground behind. Up here it feels like you’ve left your old limits and apprehensions down there, way down on the sandy ground.

It doesn’t take long to reach the settlement, flying at full tilt as you are. Feeling brave, you break into a full dive towards the identical little houses. Before you reach them you swing your legs out in front of you and brake as hard as you can, coming to a stop just in time to gently touch the ground. Looking around at all the faces fixed on you, you hope that looked as cool as it felt.

Among the faces are some that you recognize, including one that rushes out of the crowd to meet you.

“Logan you fuckin’ dickweed! I almost didn’t think it was actually you!” He says, running towards you and slamming you into a fairly violent hug.

“Derek?” You say, dumbstruck.

“Who else?” He says. “Check it out, you’ll never believe how many of the others are here!” He says, grabbing you by the arm and leading you through the crowd, completely oblivious to everyone around him.

You aren’t surprised by this. You’ve known Derek since before the rebellion. He was one of your few friends back in school, along with Brit, Bert and Hannah. The 5 of you were tight, but when the AI took over Brit already had the implant. It took you, Bert and Derek everything you had to get Hannah out of the school unscathed, considering that she was in a wheelchair.

Derek leads you into one of the houses, and almost as a response to what you were just thinking. “Brit? Bert? Holy shit!” You say, embracing the 2 of them.
>>
“Catching up can wait, hot-stuff. Right now we need to know. Al that stuff you sent over the network, was it true?” Bert says. You haven’t seen him since he left on the mission to scout out the Metal Suit factory with Hannah.

“Of course.” You say, pulling away from the two of them.

“I hope you know how crazy it all sounded, right?” Brit says. Her and Bert are siblings, both of them have blonde hair and blue eyes.

“Oh, trust me. I know.” You respond.

“Why don’t you tell us what you’ve been up to this past month, and we can relay it to the rest of the network.” Derek says.

“That works for me.” You say, but where to begin?

yeah, I should get to sleep.

Anyway, things to do: give a tank or two of our magical energy (apotropeia) to some scientists for study and have Vicky upload all relevant data, especially on corruption, to the network.

Cheers for the thread, OP(s)!
>>
“I guess I’ll start from the beginning.” You say. “One month ago when the AI made its final assault on our base, my unit got wiped out. I was trying to escape the Metal Suit that did it when I ended up in the underhousing district. Down there I met an alien, who gave me this.” You pull out the KV and show them the shield.

“It upgraded my weapons, as well as my arm and legs and gave me a new AI. It also cut a hole in space and sent me to a place called the crossroads.” You say, emphasizing this by having Vicky project images of the Crossroads and the Milestone. “While I was there I learned about Aether, an energy that everyone seems to think is responsible for all life in the universe.”

“Seems to think? Wouldn’t they know?” Brit asks.

“They did, until I showed up. Earth, humans and all the other life here doesn’t seem to fall under the reigning theory. We’re just past the edge of the universe, you see.” You project an image of the sky seen through the Visio rune. “That there is the ‘known universe’, which everyone thought encompassed everything.” You say, pointing to the beautiful array of colours in the image.

“And the rest?” Bert asks.

You shrug. “Beats me. Supposedly the universe was created by a pair of gods known as Aetherion and Voidling. When they left the origin- the Crossroads- Aetherion reached out to all the worlds and gave them life, while Voidling filled in the spaces in between.” You say.

“That story is gonna piss off a lot of people… wait, supposedly?” Brit asks.

“An old Hecatun- the inhabitants of the Crossroads- told me that the story was wrong with his dying breath. He might not have been lucid, but I get the feeling he was telling the truth. Every time I find out something new about this place, it seems more and more like something is out of place.” You say.

>Continued
>>
“And the Corruption? You mentioned something about that in your original broadcast.” Derek says.

“Yes. That’s a tough one, because I’m still not sure what’s causing it. It seems to be a sort of… allergic reaction that Aether has when it comes into contact with Void. Rocks turn purple and sickly, trees get all weird with the pulsing white veins, and lifeforms seem to lose their minds. I thought that was all there was to it, until I heard this.” You play the clips of Zeshua screaming about the corruptor, and of the creatures you’ve come to call the “ugly motherfuckers” telling you that ‘all will be as one’.

“Seems almost like a hivemind. They certainly talk like one.” Brit says, her brow furrowed and her expression serious.

“Every hivemind has a central figure though, couldn’t you take them out?” Derek asks.

“I could try. But even if I knew where that central figure was, I don’t know what it’s capable of. On top of that, killing it might just release the hivemind and send its occupants back to being crazed, corrupted beasts.”

“You said you needed humans to help you. Why us? There’s got to be some magic space aliens more capable than we are.” Bert says.

“Not in the way I need. Every other lifeform out there has Aether inside them, and is therefore susceptible to being corrupted.” You say.

Derek smiles knowingly. “But since this Aether stuff doesn’t exist here, we can’t be corrupted.” He says.

“Exactly.” You say. Now that that’s sort of done with, there’s a lot you need to do.

“Before I continue, you guys wouldn’t happen to have replacement rotors and internal bits for my shoulder around here, would you?” You ask.

“Probably, why?” Brit asks.

“The AI’s machine did a number on this one. A good portion of the internal structure needs replacing.” You say.

“Oh, well pop it open and let us know what you need. Bert’ll go and grab it for you.” Brit says, smiling at Bert, who clearly doesn’t want to grab anything but doesn’t want to say no. You move to a table and sit down as you pop your arm off. “Here, I’ll help you with that.” Brit says, sitting down across from you.

You’d forgotten that she was into this stuff. Brit used to take all the same Bio/mechanical classes you did. The two of you dig in to your broken shoulder, pulling out the broken pieces and logging down what they were so Bert can find a suitable replacement.

It isn’t long before you have the parts you need written down, and you send Bert off to wherever to get them.

“It looks like you’ve been taking care of yourself. Other than the damage you told me about, I didn’t really see much else.” She says.

“I was careful with them. Didn’t have replacement parts on me and I wasn’t sure when or if I’d be able to get some, so I did maintenance about 3 times more often than normal.” You say.

“Hmm” Brit hums, before going quiet. You look around for Derek, only to find that he isn’t here. He must’ve gone with Bert…

“So…” You say. “What was it like… Y’know… being plugged?”

Brit’s expression changes, shifting between gloomy and the odd curiosity from a moment ago. “I guess you would be the only person on Earth who doesn’t know…” She says.

“If you don’t want to talk about it, it’s fine.” You say.

“No, it’s okay. It’s not like I can ignore the fact that it happened. It was…” She pauses, looking up and placing a finger on her chin. “… relaxing, in a distressing sort of way. Like having a backseat in your own mind, letting someone else drive it while you watched. It was painful at first, like when I watched the 4 of you run away from me when it all started. But I got used to it. We built this place out here 3 years ago, when Junto stopped using people as soldiers and switched to robots. I’ve been living a normal life since then.” She says.

“Like you said, that sounds both relaxing and terrifying all at once. I can see the appeal in letting someone else take the reins for a while, but I personally like making my own decisions.” You say, flicking a small gear on the table causing it to spin like a top. “How does it feel now?” You ask.

She almost responds without thinking, but stops herself. She stays quiet for several minutes before finally speaking. “Strange… I was on autopilot for so long I almost didn’t realize I had been freed. When you destroyed Junto, I just stayed still for a long time. I was like that for a while until Bert rushed in and told me the good news.” She says.

“And was it good news?” You ask.

She seems caught off guard by this question, unsure of what to say for a long moment. “Yes… yes it was. And I’m glad that we can all be together again.” She says with a smile. But there’s something… off…

“What’s up?” You ask. If you remember correctly, Brit’s the kind of person who only gets quiet when there’s something she really wants to say.

She waves her hands around frantically. “It’s nothing! Honest!” She says.

You say nothing, merely raising an eyebrow and pressuring her to continue talking.

“Stop that! It’s really nothing!” She says, her body language telling you the opposite.

You remain silence.

She sighs. “Fine… It’s… Hannah. I heard about what happened. Are you alright?” She asks.

Oh… So in the end you pressured her into asking something you had no interest in being asked… “Peachy.” You say flatly.

“Just like you.” She says cheerfully, standing up and walking around the table towards you.

“What do you mean?” You ask.

“Even 4 years ago you were like this. It’s your problem, and you don’t want anyone to worry about you… but-“ She leans over and kisses you on the forehead. “-if you ever feel like talking about it, you know where to find me.” She pulls away with a smile and walks towards the door. “I’m gonna go see what’s taking those two so long.” She says.

And then she’s gone. “What the fuck was that?” You don’t remember her acting this way towards you before… That was weird…

You’re left with your own thoughts for a while before Derek and Bert come back, holding a box of little bits and pieces for your arm.

Derek and Bert both look at each other and shrug. “She’ll turn up eventually.” Bert says.

Without further ado, you get to work on your arm. It’s not as easy with Derek and Bert helping you than it was with Brit, as the two of them have no idea what they’re doing. But it gets done.

<Open connection.

“Well, I guess now’s as good a time as any to introduce you guys to one of my new friends.” You say.

“New friends?” Bert asks. “You mean… aliens?”

You nod. “Her name is Parin, she’s a member of an order known as the Way Knights. They’re the peacekeeping force of the universe. I’m a part of that order… sort of.” You say.

As you finish talking, a rift opens up next to you. Bert and Derek both look entirely unprepared for this, staring tensely at the open rift.

And then Parin cheerfully skips out, and they both sigh in relief.

“Yo, Parin.” You say.

“Hey, uhh… who’re these guys?” Parin asks.

“These are my old friends Derek and Bert. Guys, this is Parin.” You say to everyone.

“She’s… an alien.” Bert says, shocked.

“She’s… green.” Derek says, awestricken.

Parin leans over and whispers in your ear. “They’re… they’re staring at me…”

You kick back in your chair and laugh it off. “Welcome to the universe gents.” You say, popping your arm back in and testing out your shoulder. “Better get used to it.”

>That's all for tonight ladies and gents!

>I'd continue, but I'm so tired at the moment that I almost typed "pooping your arm back in" in that last bit.

>I'll still stick around for question time though.

Cheers for the thread, OP's

For some reason I have really bad feeling about it. It can't be ever easy, can it? All these people still have their implants and are linked together, aren't they?

I wonder if our scientists will be able to make something out of aether/void/corruption. Maybe we should invite Oz to come consult with them?
