You brace for impact.

And then, a half-second before you hit, the darkness flares between you and the asphalt. You splash into its cool, spongey grip. The cloud arrests your speed before your impact with the ground, and then you smash into the pavement with a dull thud.

You land half on your side, which while it knocks the wind out of you and is pretty painful, doesn’t do any lasting damage. You scramble to your feet and look back up at the window Ranthix threw you through. The wall around and above the hall is burning, and the interior of the corridor is lit with a fiery glow.

Before you have too much time to think or do anything, though, there’s a second blaze of light, and a loud bang followed by a rolling burst of flame that gushes out of the broken window like a volcano. You can feel the heat of it from where you stand.

However it happened, you get the idea that you’re pretty damn lucky to have made it out of there alive. Even so, though, there’s still the fact that all of Meckor’s demon posse are not far behind you, and that most of them are trying to kill you. You don’t know one way or the other about Ranthix, but you don’t think now’s the time to contemplate.

You turn to leave or go somewhere, and find the thin pale woman with white eyes standing sedately at the end of the alley, impeding that way to the main road. Her countenance shimmers, and then she is no longer the skeletal hag you first laid eyes on. She has a flat, white fate, with two squinty eyes. Her mouth is a long, jagged gash that reminds you of Heath Ledger from Dark Knight, but her nose-lessness kind of more reminds you of Voldemort.

Her fingers are long and pointed, though they don’t look meant for shredding like your claws are.

Her simple gray dress looks more or less the same, except for the fact its seams seem to be comprised of bones. She also wears a kind of tall headdress that’s somewhere between a crown and a bishop’s hat. It too seems to be carved from some kind of grayish bone.

Anyway, she looks about as tough as an old lady, though there’s still the fact that she somehow got from Waldric’s apartment to this alleyway before you did by getting tossed out the window. (Philostrathus: 6/6 HP)

She calls out to you, her voice shrill. “Which one are you, anyway?” she asks, her long, toothy mouth stretching into a macabre grin. “Sakheris or Nydalis?”

As you look at her, a hulking, serpentine thing begins slither-crawling out from behind her back. It’s length keeps extending, and it seems to keep growing larger, though it’s impossible that its bulk could have been concealed behind the demon’s frail form.
>>
>>33397562

The creature looks something like an Anaconda or a centipede, and its twitching antenna and gaping, boney maw certainly don’t add to its charm. It’s about as thick around the neck as your thigh. Before you can be properly horrified, though, a second of the centi-snakes – condapedes? – begins slithering out from behind the demon. And then a third. And the length of the first hasn’t yet stopped coming out from behind the witch when a fourth starts coming down at you.

All four of the monsters – five of the monsters, now - weave with alarming quickness over the ground and toward you, though not with such speed that you couldn’t easily outrun them. (Condapede: 5/5 HP)

>Why’d it have to be snakes?
>Charge the demon – Waldric said she’s the one engineering the mechanics of the invasion – if you can kill her, you won’t have to find the landwell.

Why exactly is it such a bad idea? You can move your mouth and your feet at the same time. It's just going to be Sierra shouting "the fuck's your problem, m8?" as she legs it. Probably won't even wait for an answer. Or do you dislike it because it doesn't really fit with the image of a stoic badass?
>>
Ok. So it looks like most people want to run.

Where do you want to go right now? Into the roiling inferno that is that building? Try to regroup with Ro? Stall until Isaac shows up?
>>
>>33397796
No, I mean, Sierra says stupid shit but she's usually fairly quiet in dramatic situations. It's just groan inducing to me for her to go "gee wiz guys, who pissed in your cheerios, oh you guys aren't saying anything because your trying to kill me, better cheeze it.'

I'd like to get Waldric, I'm surprised we didn't earlier. Why the heck didn't we grab him when we had the chance?

Because we couldn't. The people clamoring to rescue him and leap out the window were being ridiculously unrealistic.
>>

Yes, this. The cavalry is very necessary here. Not to mention our swords.
>>
>>33397870
We don't have super strength.
>>
>>33397880
How is it unrealstic? We managed to survive a two story fall with little to no damage because of our shadow powers. How would carrying another passenger make that less effective?
>>

This isn't a spiderman taunt or anything. She's not sticking around with a stupid expression on her face saying dumb shit.
If it makes you feel any better, imagine it as a lure to get the demob following us so we can lead her to Ro or Isaac
>>
>>33397870
I'd love to save Waldric too, but given the circumstance it was just not possible. There was no chance to grab him, we got thrown out of the building by Ranthix.
>>
>>33397908
Because ranthix, snake bitch, meckor, and our surprise belphegorean had us surrounded, with at least two people between us and waldric, AMD our shadow powers ate confirmed for not being that string
>>

We don't have super strength. We don't have super speed. We were surrounded by demons who would all be a handful 1v1. One of them had a crazy death laser trided that we can't dodge because it's fucking fast.

You expect us to charge across the room through all of that, grab Waldric, pick him up, and then charge another few yards out a window without any of them stopping us?

Nice joke mate.

You consider the entire situation before, even as a sixth condapede starts sprouting out from behind Philo’s back. Yeah, no.

You turn tail and leg it., tearing your dress in the process – it just wasn’t meant for running away from snakes. A loss, but a necessary one. “What the hell’s your guys’ problem?” you yell to anyone that’s listening. After hearing Meckor hating on you, you kind of get the idea, but all this snakes business is just ridiculous.

As you start to get to the other end of the alleyway and to a road that will take you to freedom, a thin, pale form steps out into your way.

“You look like a Nydalis,” says Pilostrathus, two condapedes popping out of nowhere behind her. You look behind you, instinctively. Philo’s not there anymore, though there are six huge condapedes weaving around trash bins and slithering across the gravelly ground behind you. Either she’s really, really damn fast, or she can like, teleport or something, because there’s no way she can be in your way all the time. (+3 Stress: 61/100)
>>
>>33398037

You look around for alternative options, and notice a back door that leads into the building across from Waldric’s. Could be a way out that’s not through the demon woman, though you think you could probably manage a charge against her – she really doesn’t look too tough. Unless, you know, she can do weird demon stuff.

>Charge and attack Philostrathus
>Run and try to get past Philostrathus.

Gun leading into claws.

What makes you say that?
>>
>>33398321
Because Moriah's a hellion and we've seen her demon form and she looks nothing like Philostrahus.
>>
>>33398333
Orite. Could be a variation? Not like we know shit about demon physiology by name only. Doesn't matter now though, and we'll probably learn later.
>>
>>33398300
Every demon that we've seen so far is a caster to some extent, some of them are just more fragile than others.
>>
>>33398333
She doesn't need to be a hellion to lie about HP, tweedy (stygian) did it too, there could be dozens of types of demons that Sierra doesn't know about.
She could also be a hybrid, that might result in a significant change to her appearance.
She can teleport and she's summoning things, she's definitely *some* kind of magical demon.
>>
>>33398283
We need to learn about angel types too.
>>
>>33398374
Having magical powers does not make someone a spellcaster type any more than superman having heat-vision and frost breath makes him a wizard, and Hellions were explicitly spelled out as a spellcaster type.
>>
>>33398612
Heat vision and frost breath would make someone a wizard if both of those things were spells in whatever universe we're talking about.
>>
>>33398653
Demon powers aren't spells here, they're just inherent powers, same as heat vision or frost breath. The caster types, presumably, can study external magic not based on their demonic breed.
>>
>>33398692
Maybe they're spells that manifest as supernatunal abilities?
>>
>>33398692
Demon powers are magic, not some other thing. Being innate doesn't negate their status as magic.
>>
>>33398708
No, but it can negate their status as spells. Unless you're saying a dragon's fire breath is a spell being cast? Because if so, I'd call you autistic and pedantic.

Not everything that's magic is a spell being cast.
>>
You keep running forward and pull your handgun on the demon, even as a third snake pops out from behind her.

Philostrathus flinches backward at the appearance of the gun, and all three of the snakes about her roil upward to block the shot. But they don’t block a slight opening at her head, and you aim for that shoot her., your gun kicking back in your hand.

There’s a crack of thunder, and she explodes in a shower of sparks.

The condapedes that were still coming out from behind her fall over and writhe in quiet pain – they’re unfinished at the tails, like they’ve been cut in half, and black ichor bubbles out of where they’ve been bisected. You leap over their squirming forms and pause momentarily to examine the spot where Philostrathus used to be . You can find no trace of body or blood or anything, though the smell of electricity and ozone is thick in the air.

You killed her! Maybe? You’re kind of dubious, but she’s not here, so that’s something.

Anyway, there’s still like, six, seven condapedes behind you. And then there’s an earthshaking explosion, and the ground rocks out from beneath you. A hot overpressure hits you in the back, and carries you to the ground. Shadows smooth your landing and shield you from the brunt of the hit as well as a rain of glass and debris that come streaming out of the sky.
>>
>>33398787

You crawl back to your feet and look back at the source. The entire face of the building centered about the window you fell out of has exploded and collapsed, spilling down into the alley in a smoking ruin. You note with satisfaction that it’s come down on all the Condapedes. Rest in pieces, snake devils.

Fire burns everywhere, and you can feel its radiating warmth from where you’ve fallen. Then, through the depths of the smoke and dust, you see a broad glow descending from the building. The glow intensifies around a single point of burning red light, and then resolves into a bright corona around a definite silhouette.

Out of the destruction steps a tall, flaming creature clad in a breastplate and fatigues. It has a skull-like face, bright, burning eyes, and a pair of broad, curving horns. It takes you a second to reconcile the majestic figure before you as Meckor, the dude that tried to deep fry you like, one minute ago. His trident is nowhere to be seen, and he does not look happy. He also looks a lot more dangerous now than he did when he was sitting on that couch – while he doesn’t have the obvious strength or fortitude of Ranthix, he could certainly give you or anyone you know a run for their money. But it’s kind of dark, even with the streetlights going nearby, and it looks like he hasn’t spotted you yet, though not for lack of trying. “Philostrathus?” he yells, his voice broad and booming – it’s the voice of someone who’s spent a lifetime projecting their voice to innumerable crowds. “Where is the abomination?” The fire and light radiating from him glow and pulse along with his every word.

I wonder. Are Belphegorans really common or something? Meckor's group had a lot of them. Like, the comprised half of his people. Or maybe he just recruited a bunch because they're probably good for human world stuff.

Meckor - Infernus+Hellion
Ranthix - Infernus
Cordeliate - Belphegoran
Hipster - Belphegoran
Waldric - Belphegoran
Tweedy - Stygian
Philostrathus - ??? none of the above

>Meckor found humans disgusting and inferior
Given Moriah's reaction earlier on when we referred to ourselves as a mutt, I suspect that demon's have a 'bloodline purity' thing going on as well.
>>
>>33399260
As I understood it, Moriah disliked the term rather what it meant. She even suggested alternatives.
>>
>>33399260
She didn't care that Sierra is mixed ancestry, she cared that she was being self-depreciating about it.
>>
>>33399260
I thought it was more of her not wanting sierra talking about herself like that, that she should take pride in what she is
>>
>>33399278
Which probably means she was defensive of us because demon racism is very real and very serious. Us being her only friend means that - when we say things that play into the racist demon society - she probably wants to protect us from sentiments that are very real when they come from others.

You pull some of the ambient darkness about yourself to mask your movement as you slink off out of view. The glow of the firelight does nothing to help you in that regard, but it being nighttime gives you plenty to work with, at least. (-2 PP: 23/26 PP) You manage to slip off without catching Meckor’s attention, and then you’re in the street, heading away as stealthily as possible.

You wonder how Ro’s faring – you called for her help, but this is way over both your heads. Was she in the building the explosion went off? What if she’s like, buried in rubble or something? You pause and turn back to look at the apartment building. Lights have gone on everywhere despite the hour, and a couple of people in PJs and bedclothes are coming out onto the street to see what the hell’s going on.

You crouch low behind a sidewalk bench and trash can and pull out your cellphone to dial Ro.

It rings once before she picks up. “Are you alright?” Rowan sounds out of breath.

You let out a sigh of relief at the sound of her voice, harried though it may be. (-2 Stress: 53/100) “Meckor’s here with his buddies,” you say. “I’m clear for now - where are you?!”

“I’m not leaving you behind,” you say fiercely. “I’ll meet up with you. Where are you headed?”

“Back to the car. First out the front doors, though – there’s a lot of smoke in here.”

“Well, there’s going to be more – building’s on fire. And one of Meckor’s dudes is a Belphegoran that dresses like a hipster, so smite first and ask questions later,” you warn her. You definitely can’t go back through the alleyway to get to the front with Meckor there, and his glow is intensifying, so you think he’s coming your way, which is bad. Unless you can give him the slip by going around the other side of the building, which you do. You pick up shop and start running over around the place.

“Roger wilco,” says Rowan over the phone. You hear panicked shouting and other talk in the background on her end.

“I’m coming,” you say between breaths. And then you round the corner and find a similar sight in this blackened alleyway.

“Going somewhere, hellborn?” asks Philostrathus, barring your way to the front, a couple condapedes slipping out from behind her. (Philostrathus: 6/6 HP)

This is the hugest part. Belph powers are all their own things. Infernus tree has tons of things that make Sierra better or are at least chainable. Ver tree has tons of things that make the core shadow manipulation better and it also has passives.

Belph tree has no passives. It doesn't have chainable things. It doesn't even have anything that improves on core powers or anything that's broadly usable. It's too clunky to be desirable.

I meant the way we can chain hellfire to our whip and stack the damage with them. We've never been able to do that with Sap Will and I don't think Languid is going to let us start when we get IP.

It doesn't stack or boost damage, though. It overridess the damage type. That's it. Unless they have heavy armor or something, it's going to just be better to not use it because it wouldn't hurt them any more than normal and it would just cost PP for nothing.

And there are ALREADY useful powers in it. REALLY useful ones. Ones that can take down Borya in a single use, ones that can dramatically fuck up people who rely on PP, and so forth.

And we have NO CLUE what gets unlocked with advancement.
>>
>>33400780
He'd be more vulnerable to further attacks, and getting the power that lets us corrupt our attacks would bypass his fire resistance.
What I'm trying to say is that he's vulnerable to Belphegoran powers, as most physical fighters are likely to be, mages too when you factor in Soul Drinker and that powerline.

>>33400811

The initial powers from the other trees all had something useful among them and more useful things that came from the first round of picks.

Belph tree didn't. Getting Corrupt and Dark Heart didn't unlock anything incredibly wow-worthy either.
>>
>>33400830
The belph tree isn't competing against the other trees at scratch, it is competing against leveled skills.

The belph tree is a horse pulled wagon racing against a sports car.
>>
>>33400864
Except it's not. It already has Inflict Pain (the ability that on-shot Borya) and a power that lets us seriously fuck up PP pools. It's already fantastic, and we don't even know how it advances yet.
>>
>>33400864
Yep. Languid seems to want us to keep things at least somewhat even across the trees, but he went and set advancement on a system that favors maxing things out.
>>
>>33400889
I think Borya getting one-shot was more a combination of being defenseless as a result of Inflict Pain and then getting ganked by the Lightning Sword.
Still a really good argument for Belph powers.

>>33400908
He also forced us to buy corrupt when we didn't buy any Belph powers for a while in an early thread.
I'd rather be allowed to choose which Belphegoran powers we're going to buy, since we're going to get them one way or the other.
>>
>>33400946
>He also forced us to buy corrupt when we didn't buy any Belph powers for a while in an early thread.
He didn't force us to buy anything. It just unlocked as a result of choosing to train with the Hallows. We unlocked several things that weren't Belph stuff because of training.
>>
Before things get overly hostile over pros and cons of ability trees, remember that you can just ignore whatever others vote and vote what you want.

Nothing wrong with debate of course! Just no need to lose your shit over shit like this.

Personally I'd like to see more of Totally-Not-Vampire-Demon tree but going against Languid's... encouragements, over-specializing might lead to some interesting developments.
>>
>>33400986
Corrupt unlocked, at the exact same moment that we got a level-up, on a level-up when we *just happened* to only get to choose one ability.

Training with the Hallows gave us the level-up, but it didn't force that ability on us, that was our bloodlines auto-balancing so that we don't explode.

How would the Hallows have even trained a half-demon to use corruption?
>>
Exploding and shooting are not really options – noise would let Meckor know where you are, and while you might be able to deal with Philo all night, you don’t want to see what the big bad guy can do without his trident.

You have other, less violent means of dealing with reoccurring problems. You hold up for a second to charge up a sphere of negative energy, and send it at Philostrathus. (+5 Stress: 58/100) (-5 PP: 18/26)

She’s not exactly mobile, and she senses what you’re doing too late to react. It catches her in the shoulder, and she wheels backward as if struck. The demon falls and you surge forward, sweeping her out of the way with your shadows. (-3 PP: 15/26) The rush of darkness throws her frail form at the wall. Instead of hitting it, though, there’s a crack of thunder, a shower of white sparks, and she’s gone, though the two condapedes she’s left behind still snake around in your way. Their billion and a half feet are too good at keeping grip on the ground to be washed out of the way.

The two serpents rise to meet you, wheeling upward and about in strange, alien motions that catch you off guard. One strikes inward with teeth barred, going for your throat. A surge of instinct wells inside of you, and you spin around and catch it in the side of its head with your tail, leaving a long, bleeding gash on its face. Its blood has an awful thick, sulphurous scent to it.
>>
>>33401111
>How would the Hallows have even trained a half-demon to use corruption?
Who knows? How did martial art stances suddenly make it click that Sierra could throw fire?
>>
>>33401123

The other condapede, however, is coming right at you, teeth wide to bite something of yours off. You catch its bite on your forearm at the last second, and it clamps down with incredible strength. Shadows writhe about its bite, between its teeth and your skin to keep it from scissoring through your flesh and the bones beneath, but the pressure is so intense that you feel your arm being crushed anyway, and a bolt of pain flashes up the limb. (-2 HP: 18/26) (+4 Stress: 62/100)

Its body waves to start winding about you, but you wrestle out of the vice grip before it tightens and grab the thing at the base of the skull, even as the second condapede darts in and bites you on the back of your calf. (-1 HP: 17/26) (+3 Stress: 65/100)Furious, you tighten your claws around the monster on your arm, digging through its scaley hide and into its flesh, and wrench it hard to the side. The creature goes limp, and you toss it away.

As for the thing at your back, it hasn’t managed a good hold like the other, and you jerk your leg out of its maw and lay another deep slash into the top of its head with your tail as you turn around to deliver a hard kick to the side of its head, killing it through the sheer force of the blow.
>>
>>33401147

Both condapedes flop twitching with a thousand legs to the ground, spasming between life and death. Gross. But their suffering does give you the kind of satisfaction you got as a kid when you’d run around stomping on snails for kicks and giggles. (-9 Stress: 56/100) (+2 PP: 17/26 [Dark Hearting])

With your way clear, you run forward to meet with Rowan.

You get to the front of the building, and see flames licking up the far side. The smell of smoke is thick in the air as people run out from the building, partially dressed and in confusion. It’s only a moment before you spot Ro – the batgirl costume is a dead giveaway – and she’s half helping, half hauling Waldric along with her. He seems half conscious at best, though for a guy with several huge gashes in him, he certainly isn’t bleeding as much as you’d expect him to. (Waldric: 3/22 HP)

Rowan spots you the second you start coming over with her cargo in tow. “I parked just around the corner!” she shouts, making her way over. Even with Waldric more or less as dead weight, she’s still making good time toward you.

Out of the building, ten, twelve yards behind her, comes the hipster, his beanie askew, and with one of the lenses of his ironic glasses missing. He takes one look over the crowd, and then zeroes in on you, Rowan, and Waldric.

You sense dangerousness levels rising.

>What do you do?
>>
>>33401170
Throw fire at him.
>>
>>33401132
Something about using certain movements to control the way chi/ki/whatever flows in the body, then externalizing it.
That explanation was given when we got the Hellbolt ability.

Using energy flow manipulation techniques to channel an existent power into a new form is different from teaching Sierra to use an entirely new ability.
Especially since corruption is probably anathema to angels and anyone with angelic blood.

Except that Sierra didn't know anything about corruption or how to manifest it, at all.
What you're saying is that the hallows showed her how to pour corruption into object using their holy powers as an example.
In spite of her not knowing how she would do such a thing and them probably not knowing if she could even do it, instead of giving her the combat training or refining of her existent powers.

You still haven't addressed that we got it at the exact same time as we got a level-up, and only got to choose one ability compared to the usual two.

The demon stares you in the eye, his expression flat. But the instant before anything horrible begins to happen, you twist an arm out and pull the darkness from above and around him together into two waves of force, the first catching him in the front of his legs, and the second slamming him in the back of the head. You hit him with such irresistible, sudden force that he cartwheels in place and slams face-first into the ground.

His image breaks at about the same time as his nose, and you think you can see two slight horns jutting out in front of his beanie as he tries to recover – definitely not a light weight, though you’ve seen worse. (Hipster: 23/24 HP)

You focus your attention on getting under Waldric and helping carry him off with Rowan, though. Between the two of you, you manage a respectable run even with the wounded not-vampire under arm.

You’ve ditched the growing masses and are more or less home free when you round the corner. You almost expected Philostrathus to be there waiting, but maybe the negative energy you hit her with is giving her something else to worry about for the time being.

Anyway, Vik’s Beetle parked before you, the three of you rush forward. “Let’s throw him in the back,” says Ro, pulling out the keys.
>>
>>33401920

And then Meckor descends out of the sky like a meteor. He lands on top of the car, and with a shrieking groan, the roof crushes in beneath his landing. The windshield to splinters and cracks, and the fire rolling from his shoulders and boots causes the paint to bubble and pop underfoot as he steps onto the hood and off before you. He doesn’t waste any time in throwing his hands up and blasting a wave of blinding, burning fire at you.

Rowan drops out from under Waldric and claps both hands on the ground. The fire, whose wavering heat doesn’t seem to bother you like you believe it should, crashes against an invisible wall and is diverted to your right and left. The fire keeps up for one second. Then two. Then three. It grows hotter and more intense all the while, and you realize that it’s not going to stop.

Rowan grits her teeth and stares straight ahead into the inferno, muscles straining and beads of sweat beginning to form on her brow. She can’t do this forever. Waldric won’t last a second in the flames, and Rowan’s holy shield thing won’t shield her from heat.

But though it feels like you're in an oven, it's not exactly an unpleasant oven. In fact, the idea of getting burned right now starts to seem laughable to you. It's kind of an odd sensation.

What's with all the cursing at the end, there?
I realize Sierra is pretty abrasive and curses a lot, but that just ruins any kind of dramatic impact to the line and makes it sound stupid.

It's a moot point because Meckor isn't going to die from one good roll, anyway.
>>
>>33403090
>that just ruins any kind of dramatic impact to the line and makes it sound stupid
I entirely disagree. People curse to add emphasis to things. Sierra is one of those people. And it sounds badass.
>>
>>33403121
A curse or two would be okay, but when the string of curses is longer than the line itself it just winds up sounding dumb and long-winded.

>>
>>33403274
Yes, but it still slows down the line and ruins it.
The point isn't the cursing itself, it's that it makes it too long winded.
Adding *more* syllables wouldn't make it better.

The whole line should be 7-9 syllables long, otherwise it wouldn't feel like a proper one-liner.
>>
>>33403401
>and ruins it
I disagree entirely. Showing our distaste towards his gang association and dislike of him in general make the line entirely better. 'Monster sends his regards' is a pointless display, with not even nearly enough vitriol.

I think that your suggestion of removing the second half is what ruins the line. I'd sooner have her remain stoically silent than deliver that trash.
