You are Sireyi Valyenya, 18 years old, you are on your first quest.

You have retrieved the Horn of Alzurad: a legendary artefact that can call dead heroes back to fight for the holder of the Horn. But now you’re lost on another plane, trying to find your way home.

You went hunting an assassin but ended up getting captured and knocked out.

You wake up slowly, your head hurts and your mouth tastes like stale beer. Only you’re not just hung over, it’s far worse than that. You’re in your natural form. Shackles and chains hang from your arms, your legs and your wings; your arms and legs are shackled together – making moving around difficult. Your armour is gone: all you’re wearing is the padded clothes that are normally concealed by your armour. You can feel a metal collar, no, two metal collars around your throat. Your weapons and your gear are gone. Good thing you left the Horn with Bokin. In total you’re wearing 60lbs of chains.

You take a look around you and discover you’re in a metal cage with a wooden floor, the bars of the cage are studded with inch-long iron spikes – all pointing inwards. You’re lying on the floor. The cage smells faintly of human waste, but it looks clean and the wood is wet, as if it has been recently washed. Your cage is three feet off the ground and it is on wheels.

The half-demon you fought earlier is nearby, looking away from you. You’re on a hillside overlooking Ravensport: which is a few miles away.
>>
The half-demon is wearing tight leather armour, he has the slender but athletic build of a dancer. You can sense strong evil (demon, magic) from him. He has deep red skin and dark hair, two horns just upwards from his forehead and a long slender tail waves behind him.

“How long are we going to have to fucking wait” he grumbles, turning to look at you “Oh, you’re awake, good.”

And so the wild ride begins.

>Who are you, and what do you want with me?

>try to focus and test what sort of magical damping effects we are under (divine, arcane...), preferably without making it show.

>Use Angel/Elemental power (Ride the Lightning back to the island)

First things first lets make an attempt to leave, futile as it may be.

God dammit Pally, why do you have to be so awesome and run so long? God I'm so fucking tired right now.

>RTL away, since we probably don't know IC about what all the magical things do.

I was kind of expecting us to wake up in much the same situation, but for the setting to be a taken-style slave auction.

Also, I had no time consuming commitments yesterday and had plenty of time to find all sorts of errors or ways to improve the character and rules sheets.

You call down the lightning for a quick teleport away. Lightning flashes down out of the sky and hits you, dancing over the cage you are in and scorching the wooden floor. You feel the familiar sensation of being lifted in the air and-

-a weight on your right wrist drags you painfully down. When the lightning is gone, you are still in the cage (DE 26/27).

The Half-demon looks surprised “stupid cheap chains” he mutters “guess I’ll need to add more.” To you he says “As you can see, you cannot escape.”

“Who are you and what are you going to do with me?” you ask before saying “release me!”

“I am Gendric, The Firedancer” he says, tucking his thumbs into his belt “thief, murderer, bounty hunter” he gives his credentials with a sarcastic smile “pleased to meet you, ma’am.”

“And I am not going to do anything much to you, I am going to transport you to those who have plans for you. But what I am going to do is tell you the rules, now stand!” he says the last in a commanding tone of voice.

Before you realise what’s happening your body moves on its own, raising you from the floor and standing up.

“First thing” he says “You’re wearing a collar that forces you to obey commands, the commands wear off after a few minutes, otherwise I’d order you not to escape. You must obey any command that is given, and that is clearly a command, not an opinion, not an idle comment, but a command. Not just my orders but anyone who gives you orders, although” he says as an aside “if anyone else tries giving you orders, I’ll make them regret it.”
The collar magical command took you by surprise, now that you know it’s there you think you can resist it.

“Secondly” he says “You’re wearing another collar, one that completely blocks your...um Angel powers. Don’t ask me how it works, because I don’t know, all I know is the priest who gave it to me to bring you in with was very highly-ranked.”

I'm kind of disappointed in the players' risk-assessment. We already knew there was a really high likelihood that the assassin quest was a trap. Even after having sprung that trap, they decided to wait instead of just leaving. Even after our goddess personally warned us, it was decided to just stay and do nothing. Even in the fight, which by the way was totally unnecessary given that we would have had no significant benefit from winning that couldn't have been aquired easier, they decided to just straight up fight (immediately and intentionally destroying our disguise btw) instead of moving to a more advantageous position.

Anyway, little is lost and hopefully princess dear will survive without us for a while. Next time our goddess warns us and we have little to gain by staying, I suggest we leave.
>>
>>33487867
[Metagame Info]
The first collar forces you to obey obvious spoken commands given to you by anyone. The command only lasts a few minutes. A successful Willpower roll will defeat the command.
DC’s range from 5, for things completely against your nature (harm an innocent, torture someone, let someone rape you), to 20, for things you would normally do anyway (heal someone, introduce yourself etc.).

As per previous guarantee, horrible stuff will require multiple failed rolls.

Player Agency: I want players to enjoy playing what is going to be a darker chapter, without taking away your ability to choose. Every time you’re given an order, you can roll to resist, even if you fail, you can selectively interpret a poorly-worded command. I do not intend to take away free will from my players, just make getting free difficult.

The second collar blocks any ability that uses divine power (paladin, angel and elemental powers), passive powers work normally, but attempting to spend Divine Energy requires a DC 20 Will check. With a +4 bonus you have a good chance of making this. Your captors believe the collar is 100% effective; in character, you already have good reason to believe that it isn’t. If your captors find out that you can beat the collar, they may take additional precautions.

You have a strength penalty whilst wearing some of the chains, and others drain your arcane energy away constantly, preventing you from using sorcery or draconic powers – rather, applying a huge penalty to use them and preventing you from regaining arcane energy, making them effectively useless.

Gendric looks over at a group of wagon-cages similar to yours 30 feet away, each stuffed with men and women. Whilst you have a cage all to yourself, they are packed in tightly, many pressed up against the spiked bars. They are humans and the more human-looking demon-kin. They are all wearing arm and leg shackles.

Around the cages, demon-kin in armour and carrying whips secure angry-looking horses to wagons. A fat, thick-necked demon-kin with muscled arms curses at them, urging them to move faster.

“And the trip” he says “will soon as that fat bastard Irigo get’s his worthless idiots moving.”

He wanders down to harangue the fat demon-kin. The two of them argue for a while. Gendric wants to get moving and Irigo insists they wait for someone.

A rider approaches from Ravensport, another slaver by the look of things, carrying a large sack...no...a person slung over his horse.

He rides up to Irigo and dumps the person off, they have their hands tied behind their back and look to be young, perhaps 15 or so.

“Late arrival” says the rider “tried picking a guardsmans pocket, very dangerous criminal this one” he laughs, dismounting and grabs the young boy, hauling him to his feet “And that’s not all” He grabs the boys head, forcing it to the side and brushes messy hair to one side “Ee’s an elf, lookit them ears!”

The boy does indeed have the distinctive long pointed ears of an elf.

“Well” chuckles Irigo “what luck we have, such a rarity will fetch a high price. He looks over at the packed wagon cages “We cannot have the young lad coming to harm” His gaze settles on yours “Guess he can confess his sins to the Angel before the Mistresses of Flesh get him, haha!”

“No!” insists Gendric “I paid for a private cage for my prize.”

“I am slavemaster!” counters Irigo angrily “The elf goes in with the Angel, or you can transport her yourself, and” he adds “I’ll have my shackles back.”

3/?
>>
>>33487887
“Fine, fine!” says Gendric, thrusting a finger in Irigo’s face “do what you like with the damn elf, but if one of your scum touches the Angel, he dies!”

“Whatever” says Irigo, before turning to harass his workers again.

The young elf is led over to your cage, the door unlocked and the elf thrown in, he looks groggy, a large lump on the side of his head, and doesn’t move much. His hands are tied together with rope.

When the slave caravan is ready to move, Irigo gathers his workers to him and addresses the people captured in the wagons, some are weeping, others are pleading, begging, offering money, goods, sexual favours for freedom. A few are quiet, a haunted look in their eyes.

Irigo simply waits until silence falls. “Welcome, welcome all” he says “I am slavemaster Irigo, these are my kind and compassionate assistants” he indicates the evil-looking thugs with whips “And you are all slaves” he gestures to the people in the cages “You are thieves, murderers, rapers, debtors and traitors, some of you” he says, with a look of mock-concern on his face “even blaspheme by worshipping the old gods!”

“But all is not lost” he says “A slave can earn their freedom from a kind masters, in fact, because I am so kind, I will let one, just one, of you go right now, any volunteers?”

Most of them remain silent, but a few start begging for their freedom. “That one” says Irigo, pointing to a young man “We’ll set him loose.”

The slavers unlock the cage and drag the young man out, removing his shackles. “Irigo points to the tree-line, 300ft away “You see those trees? Yes? Good, all you need to do is run to those trees and you’re free, ah, ah, ah, not yet” says Irigo, as the young man prepares to flee. “Got to keep it sporting.”

Irigo gives a piercing whistle and from behind the slavers emerge six large dogs. If dogs had red skin, horns and were the size of ponies.

3/?
>>
>>33487898
“Demon-hounds” says Irigo, “Purebreeds, worth every copper. Now” he addresses the young man “You run whenever you are ready, and I count to five and then set the hounds after you, if you reach the trees, I call them off, sound fair?”

The young man shakes his head in fear as the slavers start betting on how far he’ll make it, the most optimistic bets on 90ft.

The young man starts begging Irigo, claiming he’ll be a good, obedient slave “One” say Irigo, folding his arms. The young man starts running for the trees. “Twothreefourfive” counts Irigo quickly, following it with a command of “Boys, Kill!”

The hounds race after the man, moving faster than any dog should be able to move, they catch him before he’s gone a tenth of the distance, bringing him down. As he struggles you see that they are not trying to kill him, not initially anyway, they are tearing pieces off him whilst he’s still alive, seeming to prefer their food thrashing and screaming. Eventually he dies and the dogs eat the remains, leaving only a blood-stained ground, trotting happily back to Irigo. The slavers cheer throughout the whole thing. Some of those in the cages are violently sick.
Gendric watches most of it without expression, turning away when the slave dies, a bleak look on his face.

Irigo says to the slaves “Accept your new lives and give up all hope of escape” he shrugs “or don’t, my dogs are always hungry.” The dogs emphasise his point by running around the cages, snarling and snapping at the people in them, one approaches your cage but changes its mind after you stare it straight in the eyes, going off to harass a different cage instead.

5/?
>>
>>33487906
With that, the slave caravan gets moving, rolling away from Ravensport along the coast. Irigo rides in a supply wagon, some of the slavers ride in other wagons, or on ill-tempered horses. Some slavers walk alongside the cages to harass the slaves. This could be a long trip.
There’s 5 cages, other than your own, and each holds perhaps 30 captives. There’s 30 slavers, plus Irigo.

You are alone in your cage, except for the semi-conscious elf. Gendric is riding alongside the wagon but seems lost in his own thoughts.

As the wagon moves slowly onwards, what do you do?

You also discover that he’s not a he, you are looking after a young elf girl, dressed as a boy. The slavers seem to be fooled, but a close examination reveals the disguise. You wonder how long she can remain hidden. From the comments slavers are making about the women in the cages, you expect some of them are going to be raped when the caravan stops for the evening.

You summon your healing powers and pour them into the elf (DE22/27). The swelling goes down and your patient falls asleep, breathing more naturally. Best to let her rest, you can wait until she wakes up to talk to her.

“How did you capture me so easily?” You ask, wondering at how you could not defeat his magics.

“Easily?” he says “If you say so...I actually used up every bit of energy I had keeping you trapped and knocking you out. I was exhausted, lucky for me I was able to get you here and dose you with a sleeping potion before I passed out.”

“Why use all your powers to capture me?” You wonder what made him risk everything on such an all-or-nothing attempt.

“Because you ripped through the mercenaries I hired in seconds” he says, shaking his head “I’ve not seen anything like that.”

“If you were afraid, would it not have been better to flee?” you reason.

He’s quiet for a time before replying “I don’t run away from things that scare me” quieter, to himself he says “Never again” you barely hear him.

“Why did you capture me?” You ask

“Money” he says “Why else?”

You get the feeling there’s more to it than that. Roll Fellowship 1d20+5

“Who sent you after me?” you ask, wondering what new enemies you have made

“Oh a couple of priests of the demon lords” he says casually “Each put in their bid for my services, and each thinks I’m working for him alone.”

“How did you know where to find me?” you wonder who betrayed you, though you have your suspicions

“The priests who hired me directed me towards the Island of Storms” he says “But the thieves guild put me in contact with someone there wanting you gone and willing to lure you out, Ninther...Ninser, I think his name was.”

“Who are these priests?” you ask

He makes a dismissive gesture “Priests of the Lords of this realm, whose names I am not worthy to speak. Each serves one of the Demon Lords.”

“Isn't it risky, working for 2 masters?” you say, wondering what his plan is.

“Sure” he says “that’s what makes it fun”

>Partial Success
Money’s not his only reason, he likes a challenge, and likes to take risks, the bigger the better.

“How did you end up as a bounty hunter anyway? Are there not better positions in Drache for a person of your... heritage?”

A dark look passes over his face “Not everyone of the Blood is born into luxury, Angel” he says through gritted teeth. He rides a ways off, done with talking to you.

Seems his past may be a touchy subject.

A few hours later, the young elf awakens, confused. “Where am I?” she asks “What happened?”

“Can I have that in the Common tongue please? Without the thieves cant” you say. You’ve puzzled out some of what she was talking about but there’s no harm in asking for the full story, or checking to see if she even can speak a language you understand.

“Thief?” She says “I’m no Mobsman. Alright I may have been a grabsman a time or two, and I might ‘ave flimped now and then, was a palmer for a bit, had a talent for puckering, tooling as I needed to, only when things was rough aye? “The majority of the terms you are speaking in make little sense to me and only have relevance to your locale. Please try and speak in a less modified dialect of Common so that I may understand you better” You say, trying to be as clear as you can.

She grins at you “You musta fell frum ‘eaven if you can’t cant. Alrit then yer ladyship” she pauses for a moment and then retells her tale, adopting what she fondly thinks of as a noble accent.

“Oneself was a thief, the criminal variety of, what is skilled in windows, the breaking in thereof. My compatriots and bosom chums ran a most teeeerible deception. In which one protends to be a gentleman of means, he knocks sharply upon a carriage that is manoeuvring and exclaims most forthrightly that a young lady. his ladylove, has been struck by said carriage and implores the occupants to help her to a doctor or apothecary. It is a base deception to waste time so that others, namely oneself, might peruse, with the intention of thefting, items in the occupants home, as they are otherwise engaged in a charitable act.”

She pauses as she assembles the next part of the story “With great misfortune I encountered a pair of ne’er’do well ruffians, who by means of instruments blunt, inflicted a grievous wound upon my car-ranium. It with great regret that I fear my close, trusted companions may have sold my freedom to the servants of the towns law.”
>>

“Now that you’re healed” you explain what you did and ask her to keep it to herself “you probably want to keep pretending to be a boy.”

“Ah” she continues, still in character “It is with gratitude I must thank you for your aid, kind lady of heaven” she grabs your hand with both of hers and shakes it enthusiastically, until you stop her by pulling your hand away. She continues in her...usual mode of speech “But thank you, really, I’m not flamming. So toff, what’s the lay?”

You think she’s asking you what happens now, you wish you knew.

Well unless someone has a better idea I'd like to try smiting that bracelet again.

Though asking Jal to try and loosen shit is good too.
I wonder if we can smite and break/destroy an object without it exploding into a fuckton of pieces and causing a huge commotion, or if it'll just end up being a crack in the object and it loses its power...
>>
>>33488604
Well, if we do smite we should burn 4+2 DE, not just 4.
The reason is that RTL+1 passenger is 6 DE for one mile, and 12 would leave us with enough juice to attempt it twice.
6 rolls, and only one would need to pass 16, assuming we can break the bracer.
>>
Perhaps while everyone's up and ready is NOT the best time to smite?

Or are we not pragmatic at all and unwilling to wait until mid journey to break free? Obviously before the first night.
>>
>>33488626

Just putting that out there in case a tool for that could be procured. What kind of object would be sufficient in your skilled eyes? (In case someone wants to have fun with us tonight and we have opportunity to steal something)
>Look around, is there anything lying around, maybe remainders from previous occupants? How far away are the other slaves?

Depends how much power you use

"You have any idea how to loosen collars?" you ask Jal, she examines them carefully before replying

"Nah, it's full of fizz" she says "No clinks or tumblers in sight."

This again...

After some discussion you discover that both collars are unbroken bands of metal, with no visible locks or clasps. As magic items a command word may be needed to remove them.

Both of the bracelets are the same. The chains on you have locks though, and Jal expresses confidence that with the right tools, she can at least get your shackles and chains off.

You decide to try breaking the bracelet later, and spend the rest of the day talking quietly to Jal. She’s a street thief with no real specialisation other than picking locks. She has a number of amusing anecdotes about her life of tricking and stealing from people.

You will never look an eel pie the same way again.

The convoy doesn’t move very far in a single day, travelling through hills, on the edge of a forest.

That evening, the cages roll to a stop. A single cage is emptied of its captives. They are examined by the slavers – a foul-smelling paste is smeared upon any injuries. Judging by the captives responses, the paste is incredibly painful.
The slaves are fed a thin stew, before being allowed a moment of semi-privacy in the trees at the edge of the forest, before being herded back into the cage again, and the next cage is opened.
As the slaves walk into the trees the slavers have the dogs with them, and try to goad the slaves into trying to escape. None of them try to. Each time a cage is opened, several of the slavers take some of the women deeper into the forest: the screaming leaves you no illusions about why.

You and Jal are given bowls of the guards stew rather than what the slaves are having – at Gendrics insistence. You eat in your cage, rather than outside.

“It’s your money” say Irigo as Gendric fill two bowls of stew at the slavers cookfire “But why the elf too?”

Gendric looks over at you “If I didn’t feed the elf too, I suspect she’d give him her own food” At least Jals disguise is holding up.

As the last cage of slaves is being led into the trees, Gendric opens your cage and leads the two of you to the edge of the trees “Do your business and come back” he say “you have 10 minutes, then I’m coming looking for you.”

>>33488826

agreed. If she can get her hands on some bettys then its a valid option, otherwise we're going to get caught.

>>33488861
I'm not sure what you mean? My basic thinking is that we try and break smite an item away from prying eyes and to go back and hide the fact that we have destroyed one of them. Also our DE should refill every day so its not like we only have one shot of this.

You easily throw off the command and sink your teeth into the hand over your mouth, eliciting a curse as he lets go and drags his hand away from your mouth. He’s still dragging you backwards.

You hear a bellow of anger from outside the woods and hear running footsteps “You winged harpy!” yells Gendric “That bracelet cost a lot of mone-” he pauses as he sees your attacker.

Gendric grabs your attacker, pulling him off you without any apparent effort and throwing him away. The slaver tumbles end over end and then rises, a shortsword hand “Kinda selfish to keep that slice of heaven to yourself” says the slaver, advancing on Gendric

Gendric looks unconcerned and says in a conversational tone “I thought one of you would be dumb enough to try this, but not the first night, well you just volunteered to be my example to Irigo.”

The slaver rushes at Gendric, sword low, Gendric catches the sword blade with his bare hand, a small trickle of blood runs down the blade, with the other he savagely punches the man in the gut, folding him in two and dropping him to the ground. Gendric throws the sword away into the woods.

Gendric approaches you and backhands you across the face, hard (HP 55/58), with your arms and legs chained, you are unable to effectively dodge him. “That bracelet was expensive” he says, pointing a finger in your face “If you break the spare I’ll drug you into unconsciousness, now come with me.” He bends down to the slaver lying on the ground writhing and grabs his leg with one hand, and then grabs you by the wrist, heading towards the edge of the forest.

I see. Oh well, not like there's much we can do anyway.
>>
>>33489293
You can't drop your morals because it's convenient at the time if you wish to continue being a paladin.
>>
>>33489293
>Taking the chance to escape
It's a bad opportunity anyway, we'd be able to go 6 miles and still be chained, divine powers suppressed, unable to fly AND we have the tracking bracelet.
We would have no opportunity to regain DE before they catch up.
>>
>>33489290

They mainly know that it's an elf.
>>
>>33489273
Forgot that again.
>>33489158
Redeeming touch knocked the last guy out for several days. Would knock-out happen even if it fails?
In any case:
>Ask him to help the elf girl.
>If he suspects you will run, say he can Sireyi not to do that. He still thinks his orders work.
>If he gets her back: Teleport together (sacrifice some health)
>If he refuses, teleport to her (1DE) and then take her with us.
>>
>>33489270
Redeeming him will put him into a coma.
>>
>>33489307
>>33489313
It just feels kinda forced is all I'm saying. I don't really like the "you can't leave without falling" scenario
>>
>>33489315
In my opinion its not dropping morals. Its actually doing the thing which will most likely result in us and our new friends actually getting free and minimizing the total rapes we could take.

>>33489318
No, we can always burn health for DE. Do not forget that.
>>
>>33489341
Yes, but we recover that health at 1/day and, as has already been shown, we have to pay the price even if the teleport fails.

I'm not saying I disagree with trying to teleport back to the Island of Storms at expense to our health, I'm saying it's insanely risky and we shouldn't leave Jal behind if we do attempt it.
>>
>>33489335
Yes, not being a dick is something that all paladins are forced to do if they wish to keep their powers.

>>33489325
Seconded!
>>
>>33489335
It's not "You can't leave without falling" it's "You can't flee to save yourself without falling."
>>
>>33489158

>>33489325
Alright well that sounds like the best plan so far. I'll second that. It at least gives the option for what I want to do and lets us possibly save Jal, regardless of whether or not we teleport.

Ok, decision made, most popular choice is for Sireyi to ask Gendri to help, and if that fails, try to help her yourself.

You wait until Gendric returns, pulling Jal behind him, of her attacker, there is no sign. Jal is crying, but is still clothed, and doesn’t look injured. Looks like Gendric got there before anything happened.

He lets go of Jal “Go back to the cage” he tells her, not unkindly, he then grabs the slaver, who’s still clutching his stomach and moaning, and reaches for you.

I'm also tempted to play nice and try to convince him to side with us since we're planning to fight the demon lords. We can do this if we fuck up the rolls, of course, but then our position in talking him down will be weaker.

Still think porting out is the best chance for now. I do think we could benefit from tracking him down after we're unshackled though.
>>
>>33489576
I would have used trickery (pretent to want to hug her). Still possible?
>>
>>33489603

Welp, this plan didn't work. At least our friend didn't get raped, and that's what counts.

>>33489639
We don't want this guy asleep when he's the only one looking out for us. After this attempt fails, we submit to him.

>redeeming touch him, if he is near enough. Otherwise a teleport behind her, then teleport away. (kind of wasteful given our proximity, but better than running in chains.)
>>
>>33489718
I hesitate to redeem him when he is, at this point, our protector. If we can't get away and hes left in a coma. Hes dead and we are not getting out of this
>>
>>33489737
I agree, using redeeming touch right now would be a poor decision, especially since it'd probably just fail completely.
>>
>>33489718
I kinda want a rival, though. Besides, I don't really consider him that evil that he needs divine help to be redeemed.
>>
>>33489737

Where did you get the coma thing from? Power description says "an instant". Is coma special rule for part-demons?
>>
>>33489737
Good point. I rescind that part and vote that after both fellowship attempts fail, we immediately use the teleport plan.
>>
>>33489763
From the fact that the last guy we used it on went into a coma for three days, probably.
Read the archives, newfag.
>>
>>33489763
When we tried it on a cultist, he slept for several days. I do not know if this is usual or if this only happens upon a successful roll. Also, using redeeming touch as a knock-out spell seems inappropriate for a paladin so that plan was not that good to begin with.
>>
As you move away to go to Jal, Gendric grabs you wrist and hauls you back, dragging you face-to-face with him “What do you think you’re doing?” he asks, a frown on his face. His eyes lose focus for a moment then flicker from side-to-side “the teleportation they warned me about” he says to himself “you can take others with you...and you don’t want to abandon him, huh I guess they weren’t lying, Paladins really are real.”

He yells at Jal “Get back to the cage and wait beside it!” She heads back to the cage.

He turns to you “Alright, new rules, you’ll both be chained to opposite sides of the cage so you can’t get close to one another. You escape, he dies, you break my second anchor bracelet, he dies, and it will be your fault.”

He drags you back to the cage, shouting for extra shackles, which a slaver brings him, looking curiously at the slaver Gendric is dragging behind him.

Gendric shackles you to the bars of the cage, far away from the door, and then shackles Jal to the opposite side of the cage, the two of you far away from one another.

“And I was thinking of taking the leg and arm irons off so you could defend yourself” he says quietly before leaving, he returns with another bracelet that he secures around your wrist, it fits perfectly and seamlessly. “Get comfortable” he says “it’s a 3 month trip to the slave auction.”

He then drags the slaver over to Irigo, in full view of the other slavers, and the slave wagons.

“Bastard broke me ribs” gasps the prone slaver “Fucking bastard, gut him boss”

Gendric looks at Irigo, then pointedly at the injured slaver “I told you if any of your men touched her, they’d regret it.”

“Looks like he regrets it” says Irigo, not rising from where he’s sat.

“The message needs to be clearer” says Gendric “Nice trick with the runaway slave by the way, real nice, good idea.”
>>
>>33489796
He lifts the wounded slaver up over his head with both hands and addresses the other slavers “Watch carefully” he says “and learn why they call me the Firedancer”.

The slaver held above his head bursts into flames, screaming and thrashing, Gendric simply stares at Irigo and the slavers, who are frozen in shock. Within moments the slaver stops moving and goes silent, Gendric drops him to the ground and walks away. You can smell the charred flesh from here.

The other slavers look ready to attack him but Irigo stops them with a single upheld hand saying simply “he disobeyed my orders.”

Rest doesn’t come easily that night, but you eventually fall asleep. There’s only 29 slavers and Irigo now.

The next morning you wake up, having spent a miserable night chained to the bars of the cage, something is wrong, your Divine Energy is recovering much slower than normal (DE 7/27).

[Divine Energy recovers at 1 point/day whilst wearing the collar]

Will you?
>Try and escape again that day?
>Wait for divine energy to recover (how long?)
>Don’t escape until you get a chance to take Jal with you

Gendric will be watching you closely, and stops you getting close to Jal.

I say we escape until day 16 at least. Try to talk to people on the way, though. Might even convince our nice Jailor to help us if opportunity arises. At least make sure that he knows we do like him for being extremely nice (relative to circumstances) to us.
>>
>>33489936

Don't forget all of those require a roll with above average difficulty (after bonuses)
>>
Gendric will be watching you closely, and stops you getting close to Jal.

You travel for a week with the slave wagons (DE 14/27). After the attempt on you the first night the other slavers are keeping away from you, but Gendric watches you like a hawk nonetheless, giving you no opportunities to escape. You’re now miles down the coast, far from the Island of Storms, in the back of your head you can feel Ebonsong panicking.

Then the slavers try to separate Jal from you, saying that she doesn’t need to be in a cage, she can be tied up in a wagon whilst one of them watches her. The slavers doing this make it sound like they’re doing a favour for Gendric, as he never wanted you and Jal together initially.

Irigo simply watches from the sidelines as Gendric stands their considering their request, clenching and unclenching his hands – a sign of his you recognise as stress.

The exchange takes place in front of your wagon. What do you do?

Idle curiosity: why do you guys think Gendric is a nice guy? All I see is a 3edgy5me douchebag that's in it for the money/challenge.
>>
>>33490056

He probably had a rough upbringing. Probably had to do a lot of shitty things to get to where he is right now, but someone might have left a strong impression on him that he never quite forgot.
>>
(cont.)
In addition, despite his rather brash manner, he might think he's trapped in his current lifestyle. He might not enjoy being a slaver, but he may not see any alternative than to be what he is now.
>>
>>33490056
Eh, the only things evil about him are his heritage, the nature of his magic, and his willingness to kill those who slight him.
Otherwise, he's an honorable bounty hunter who likes a little adventure.
>>
>>33490056

He seems to fill the cliche of a conflicted scoundrel that could turn into a good guy, or at least do the right thing. Of course that is hardly a reliable measure and kind of meta.
>>
>>33490089
I don't really see the honorable part. The only thing that he did that could be called honorable was save Jal, but that was after a fellowship roll of 30. We could convince Hitler to save the Jews with a roll like that.

>>33490083
That's a hell of a lot to assume with how little we've seen of him.

>>33490093
....I never trust cliches. It doesn't usually work out well.
>>
“You said he wouldn’t get hurt if I did what you asked” you say, which isn’t technically true, but it gets the point across.

“The elf stays where he is” says Gendric, with a note of finality about it.

“As he says boys” responds Irigo “seems the big bad bounty hunter can’t control his prize without a hostage, be a shame, a real, real shame if something were to happen to the pointy-eared little thing, the elf stays there” you feel like he was going to add ‘for now’ onto the end of that sentence.

The slavers leave you all alone.

Over the past week you’ve learned quite a bit about Jal: she’s a street thief who never knew her parents, just the child gang who raised her, led by an old man who trained the children to steal for him. She’s very good at moving quietly, though she’s unused to the wilderness, having lived her entire life in a town. She claims to be an excellent lock-picker and pickpocket, saying that if she can get close to a slaver, she can steal everything they’re holding, and even a sharp sliver of metal would be enough for her to pick the locks on your chains, magic or no magic. Her full name is Jallariel- but she begs you not to call her that.

Over the next few days the slavers keep trying to separate you and Jal, not very subtly. Gendric has to break a few bones to get his point across and is trying to manage a careful balance of keeping you two together so he can watch both of you, and not letting you get within arms reach of one another. You spend a lot of time chained to the bars of the cage.

After a while Gendric is looking angry, stressed, and sleep deprived, as he keeps having to stop slavers from taking Jal for ‘a walk’ at all hours of the day.
>>
>>33490151

Do you?
>Ignore the conflict and concentrate on escape
>Feed the conflict, have Gendric fight more of the slavers
>Offer Gendric a bargain (i.e. in return for an oath not to escape, Gendric lets Jal go, or lets her close to you, so you can protect her from the slavers, or something). This will be a negotiation, so you’ll get to pick options.

Hey, remember that time when Moses kept failing all of his fellowship rolls with Rameses and all the firstborn sons died?
I suspect it was due to DM fiat.
>>
>>33490159

Hmm... on one hand, if the slavers managed to overpower Gendric, we'd have bettter chances. At the same time, fleeing without Jal would be shitty and not help us a lot, seeing as we're still in chains. We need her.

>Offer Gendric a bargain, try get him to let us fend the slavers off the elf by ourselves to some degree.
>>
>>33490271
>implying Moses didn't fail those rolls intentionally to get out of paying child support to his baby momma.

>Success

Several times Jal has been in what might be described as lesser peril: A slaver wanting 'some time with the young elf lad, not gonna hurt him bad, you can watch if you like'; slavers wanting to use the threat of the hounds to scare Jal to help keep you in line; several slaves attacking Jal, apparently jealous of the preferential treatment the two of you receive.

At these times, Jal could have been scared or hurt, without being killed, and probably without reducing her value as a hostage.

In each case Gendric has protected her, and, you get the feeling he would have done it without needing to.

You get the impression him leaving Jal to her fate the first time in the forest is something he's ashamed of, and maybe he's overcompensating.

Will leave voting open for a bit, then write response.
>>
>>33490002
We do not have unlimited time. If we need to, we can also use our health.

>>33490315
Getting closer to Gendric is far more useful than talking with Jal all the time. I suggest we try talking to him. Even if it's only meaningless babble for a while, that would serve a good basis for convincing him.

I also want to try finding out what makes him remain a bounty hunter given his repeated distress when people are hurt.

Hey, if our RTL purges the demon in Gendric, will it be like in Final Fantasy 3 (VI) where the love in his human half will let him survive?
>>
>>33490447
What.
Ride the Lightning (RTL) is a teleportation ability, Redeeming Touch (If that's what you're talking about) wouldn't fry his brain just because he's a half-demon.
What are you even talking about?
>>
>>33490409
Bokin is the only person on this plane this isn't too much of a pussy to even leave the isle and i don't have too high of hopes that he can do anything to help us.
>>
>>33490470

He probably thinks that teleporting through the storm would destroy Gendric's demon parts. I don't think that's how it works at all.
>>
>>33490421
Oh, I absolutely know. I wish we would have done my suggestion 10 days earlier, but even now this not a matter that has to be resolved immediately. My vote is to get a little closer to him, find out how he ticks etc. Then, depending on findings either
>Convince him to let both go.
(Monetary compensation would be assured by the princess and future employment is possible short-term through us, long-term through taking him away from this world. Both only conditional on being reasonable to say at that time)
or
>Convince him to ease our bonds in some way. Then attempt to escape.
>>
>>33490520
Oh sure, just buy off the bounty hunter, like it wouldn't completely tarnish his reputation to future customers.
>>
>>33490495
It's not, the storm doesn't just target the demon parts.
It would pick up on the demon parts, then say "YOU DIE" and vaporize Gendric, or it would just let him pass because we said it's okay.

>>33490520
Basically hire him away from his employers?
That's a decent long term plan, but we still need to decide what to do in regards to Jal and the conflict between Gendric and the Slavers.
Unless your vote would be to ignore it?
>>
>>33490549
That suggestion would hinge on him wanting to severe ties with demon-kin and only not having the opportunity so far.
>>
You engage Gendric in conversation one night when he is bringing dinner to Jal and you, commenting on how tired he’s looking, and thanking him for protecting you and Jal.

He waves away the thanks, seemingly embarrassed by it “Of course” you say “there may be a way to make it easier.”

“What?” he says suspiciously

“I could help” you say earnestly.

“Help how?”

>If you took my (non-magical) shackles off, I could help protect him, I’m a warrior after all.

>If you took off the shackles sapping my strength I could help defend Jal
>If you stopped keeping me and Jal apart, you wouldn’t need to split your attention between the two of us
>Other

“Sounds like you benefit from that more than I” he says “What do I get?”

>I’ll swear an oath not to try and escape whilst in your custody (no promises about when you get sold of course)
>I’ll swear an oath not to destroy any more of your possessions (the bracelets are his, the chains and collars are not)
>You must get very lonely, being able to rely just on yourself, no one to share your life with (seduction, will require Will roll to attempt)

A note on oaths: Velya isn’t a stickler for obeying the exact wording of an oath, only the broad intentions of it. And she has no issue with her servants breaking an oath to serve a greater good. Breaking oaths for frivolous or selfish reasons is against your code though.

Once you have the basics of your bargain selected, a Fellowship roll will be asked for, DC will vary depending on how much you ask for, and how much you offer

As my posts seem to be really unclear: My understanding was that the conflict was ongoing for several days and showed no sign of stopping. Okay, so we wouldn't be able to teleport and could still be tracker.
We can still fly at 200 miles per hour and use divine powers with impunity, hypothetically.

>>33490594
It's really not anywhere approaching a reasonable course of action.
Not to mention we probably only have a +3 to 'seduction' but a +11 to negotiation.

I don't think it means we'd actually sleep with him, just imply things.

I'd also like to ask Gendric how much hes being paid and to drop a hint that a ransom for us could easily be quite a bit more

>...Does it mean we'd sleep with him, OP?

Not on this vote alone, no.

Currently picking this as part of the bargain is implying you would be willing to sleep with him, if he was nice to you.

Actually going through with it is not part of the bargain and would be several move votes away.

Picking this as an option is about getting close enough to him for him to let his guard down.

>>If you took off the shackles blocking my arcane powers I could help defend Jal
>>If you stopped keeping me and Jal apart, you wouldn’t need to split your attention between the two of us
He would have to be extremely stupid to do either. He fears us because of our powers, and he knows we want to get close to teleport both of us, which he also knows we can do despite the limiter.

>If you took my (non-magical) shackles off, I could help protect him, I’m a warrior after all.
Moveability is more useful for us, I think.

>“What do I get?”
Doesn't need to put that much effort into protecting them. Maybe even a full night's rest.
>>
So, a request to take off the shackles draining your strength and allow you and Jal to get close enough to ouch.

And an offer to swear not to break the bracelets.

“If you took off the shackles sapping my strength I could help defend Jal” you say “and if you stopped keeping me and Jal apart, you wouldn’t need to split your attention between the two of us.”

"After all, I can't teleport without breaking the bracer, and even then it probably wouldn't work. Though my strength is great, it wouldn't allow me to fight off 30 people and win by its own merits."

“In return I’ll swear an oath not to destroy any more of your possessions.”

He thinks about it, obviously weighing up the risks and benefits before replying “No”

He turns to go, you know you have just one more chance to try to agree something, at least for tonight.

We should just add some things to the deal for him and bring other things to his attention.
Such as:
>Doesn't need to put that much effort into protecting them. Maybe even a full night's rest.
As >>33490725 said and:
>Alright, how about instead of the strength-draining ones, just the ones that restrict movement.
>Even with less strength than normal, I'm still a warrior and could defend Jal, and the Tracking bracelet means that my escape is either impossible or a moot point on foot.

I'm assuming that movement-restricting ones don't count the wings.

>>33490913
So, only getting near her, without the ability to move properly or having access to our full strength?
That would help us defend her in what way, exactly?
>>
>>33490885
Does he understand the weight of us swearing an oath? Because we should heavily stress that we can't break an oath once given because paladin reasons. Possibly stress the point beyond the truth.

Don't ignore the statement.

It might make sense from the point-of-view of us and our escape attempt, but we need to sell it to him, and in order to do that we need to provide reasons why it would make his life easier, not just make is easier for us to escape.

He won't accept it if he doesn't think we'd be able to defend Jal while we're still bound, and not defending Jal so he can relax gives him no damn reason to agree to anything we want.
>>

You decide to leave things for now; perhaps he’ll be more amenable tomorrow.

The next day starts out the same as all the others, you and Jal are fed, and Gendric escorts you somewhere private for your morning wash etc.

As you walk back through the camp towards your cage, Gendric makes sure he is between the two of you. Two of the slavers start harassing Jal, not touching her but walking alongside and telling her what’ll happen to her once she gets to the slave block. Since they think she’s a boy, the stories might not mean as much to her.

Gendric keeps an eye on them but doesn’t intervene.

“Ohhh, lovely pretty elf boy like you, the Mistresses of Flesh will put one of those parasite things in the back of your neck, make you all docile and ready to fuck whoever they tell you to.” Says one

“Of course” says the other “The Mistresses might get outbid, fat useless merchant might buy you, I bet they love a bit of boy eh?” he grins at his companion.

Jal doesn’t rise to the bait, walking on and not looking at them.

Gendrics hands start to clench and unclench, looks like he wants to do something.

Please pick only 1 option

Man, where are we even? We have no geographical knowledge of this place unless we fly up, and even then we're quite a ways away from the isle of storms. We need to get a map.
>>
>>33491193

Lets see if we can sell the protection. Or make ourselves such a nuisance fruitlessly protecting her that its dangerous if we don't have more power

>Get between Jal and her tormentors
>>
>>33491230
My thoughts exactly.

>>33491225
Not really.
RTL works by us giving it an idea of where we want to go, and then it takes us there, so we could still go back to the IoS as long as we're within range of it.
If we get free in any other way, then we can just get the chains off our wings and fly up.
A map would be nice, but it isn't really a priority, and I don't think anyone would be stupid enough to give a slave that's a high flight risk a map of the area.

Just thought of a bargaining chip: Fluffy Wings

Gendrics punch twists the slavers head around and he lands on the floor unmoving.

The other slaver just stares in shock as Gendric lifts the other one up and throws him bodily through the air, hitting one of the slave-wagons face first, deforming the metal bars with the impact. “Shut up!” he yells “just shut up!”

In the shocked silence, one of the slavers checks the one who hit the cage “He’s dead” he says.

“This one too” says Jal, kneeling by the slaver that Gendric punched, as Jal rises you see a flash of metal in her hand before it disappears.

Irigo is called over. “The first one I let pass, but now you kill more of my crew!” he thrusts a finger into Gendrics chest. “Any more trouble out of you, even a cross word, and you and your prize leave the caravan and you give me back my chains and my elf. Now go!”

Gendric seems stunned by his own outburst and simply nods mutely. Wandering back towards your cage.

Roll Fellowship 1d20+5, to figure out what’s wrong with Gendric.

In all the excitement, he doesn’t notice you and Jal are both side by side. Your current Divine Energy is 19/27

You could

>Talk to Gendric
>Do something else (what?)
>Don’t escape yet (Jal looks like she now has something she can use as a lockpick)

Plan: so we can fly pretty fast with armor on. Ergo, we get Jal to pick the locks to the chains on our wings, grab her, and then fly off without our armor.

That's a divine ability, possibly.
It doesn't use DE but it's the same as Lightning Mastery, which does need a roll to use, so I don't know.

No armor doesn't increase our flightspeed by any amount, and our wings are too heavily chained.
She'd need at least 10 minutes to get the chains off, even with a proper lockpick.

Plus, I'd prefer to get our gear back, like that anti-magic amulet and the platemail that was specifically enchanted to be near-weightless.

>Success

Gendric was a blood-slave to a vampire as a child.

Basically a vampire kept him as a food source against his will.

Jal almost being raped hit a little too close to home for him, hence the stressing once you pointed out he could save 'him'.

And the slavers being dicks said the wrong thing.

Gendric takes you back to the cage and locks you in, his body is going through the motions but his mind is somewhere else, his eyes aren't focusing.

The slave caravan gets moving and Gendric gets on his horse, not really seeing anything.

Possibly, but if we had no strength-draining chains on we could probably manage it.
Still don't know if Storm Wind's passive effects count as divine or not, so our top speed would probably be somewhere in the 35 mph range with a passenger.
Although she is kind of skinny and frail.
Also an elf, and therefore pretty light by human standards.

>>
>>33491716
Thanks for spotting, my mistake.

Sorry everyone for the lack of sense.

The following should have been in place before Gendric hit

You get between Jal and her tormentors, Gendric doesn’t seem to notice that you’re now within arms reach of Jal, he’s not looking at you, his eyes are unfocused, you’re not sure what he’s seeing, or maybe remembering.

You stare the two slavers down, confident they can’t say or do anything to hurt you. They seem to agree, and look ready to back down. Before they do they sling one last parting shot Jal’s way.

“It’s not all sex-slaves” one calls “plenty of wealthy vampires to buy you, they say young blood tastes sweeter!”

“Yeah” agrees the other one “Better coffin-bait than a boy-whor-”

Gendrics punch twists the slavers head around and he lands on the floor unmoving.
>>
>>33491759
Oh. Well there we go. Thanks Pally. Thats significantly clearer lol
>>
>>33491789

Also, new thread
>>
>>33490315
>You get the impression him leaving Jal to her fate the first time in the forest is something he's ashamed of, and maybe he's overcompensating.
so
1. he wasn't born into luxury
2. he is only in it for the challange
3. he is actually a decent person

We should really try to redeem the guy. and if he is with us, the two of us could slaughter all the slavers and rescue all the slaves not just jal.
