The Arkanids were originally a client species of the Naga during the First Ouroborosian Empire and allies of the Second. Even now, they hold close ties with the Central Aristocracy, facilitating the desires of their Nagan benefactors. Their shrewd and shadowy nature has seen them as both ambassadors and assassins, as well as anything else their former overlords desired. They also sport one of the most bizarre examples of sexual dimorphism in the Multigalactic Sprawl, with their women having a fleshy, eight-eyed upper body attached to an arachnid thorax at the waist and their men looking entirely humanlike, save for their heads which looks exactly like a spider. Despite their often off-putting appearance, they remain a polite and courteous people, which have made many all the more wary of entering into their parlor.

Not that that much matters to you at the moment. Right now, you’re mostly just angry. First, you waste a perfectly menacing pirate speech on a ship full of goddamn robots AGAIN (at least they responded this time) and then some bitch calling herself “The Scarlet Widowmaker” has gone and stolen your thunder by telling you-

“Beware, travelers! The crew of the Silken Gallows has caught you in her web, and now I, her captain, the dreaded Scarlet Widowmaker shall be your end unless you surrender yourselves to me!”

Yeah, that. It’s not fair, YOU’RE the one who makes the menacing demands for surrender and not anyone else. For you are Captain Valdessa Atroxius, fearsome leader of the space pirate crew of The Sol Regret, and nothing is gonna stop you from claiming your prize!

So how do you respond, Captain?

>Deliver your own menacing monologue right back at her. We’ll see who the better pirate is yet!
>Offer to split the treasure 50-50. You don’t like giving up loot, but you’re willing to part with some if it means getting one step closer to Scaly Dan’s treasure

It may not have been the most ideal raid, but hey, at least you’re finally talking to someone with a pulse for once. You figure you may as well milk that for all it’s worth.

“As generous of an offer as that is, I am afraid I will have to decline. It would be rather unbecoming of me as Pirate Captain Valdessa Atroxius, captain of the infamous Sol Regret and the eternal thorn in the paw of Fleet Admiral Graveside himself to surrender even one scrap of the treasure she has set her eyes on! Seeing as you’re the generous sort, I’ll make a generous offer of my own: turn tail and head back to where you came from and I’ll try to forget you ever attempted to shake me down.”

The comm returns nothing but silence interspersed with muffled arguing for a full minute before you get your reply.

“Then I shall look forward to meeting you on the battlefield, Pirate Captain Valdessa.”

Well that didn’t go exactly as planned, but at least she got your title right. That’s a first. What to do now, though?

>Have the Sol Regret fire at her ship to try and scare her off.
>Try to hurry up and find the reconfiguration chip before she can find you.
>Learn where she is boarding from and just cut to the chase while the rest of your crew finds the chip, you know how these things work by now.

“Helmsman Phillips, tell me everything you can about that new ship.”

“Looks to be a custom job, Cap’n. Whole thing was funded by some fossil hunting corp by the name of ‘Aureo-Flava Frontiers’, but who knows how they got their hands on it. Seems to be based on-”

“Its location, Rosco. Tell me where the damn thing is and what it’s doing.”

“Oh, right. Forgot you don’t care about all the important stuff. Looks to be dockin by umbilical opposite of where you came in.”

By umbilical? Is this some kind of complete amateur? No self-respecting pirate uses an umbilical, they’re too fragile, too slow, need a proper port, and leaves you with only one exit point. Boarding harpoons are the way to go. Either way, you got your information, so now it’s time to meet the interloper and party. Boarding party, that is. You tell Padstow to take the Mechaniacs and continue their hunt for the chip while you head off to the docking bay in search of your prey.

You get there just in time to see the airlock doors hiss open, time to see who this Scarlet Widowmaker really is.

What greets you is a mech not unlike your own, save more form fitting and with eight spidery legs where you have a snake tail and made out of sleek black materials. Less random attachments, too. It’s more of oversized power armor than a proper mech, come to think of it. But what really grabs your eye is the fact that she is wearing an elegant red dress over said power armor. In her hands is a matching red parasol, made of metal with a sharpened tip.

“Pirate Captain Valdessa, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”

Before you can get a word in, a machine army pours out from behind her and surrounds you, with even more rushing into the bowels of the ship. They appear to be like the servbots you’ve been facing, yet these ones look more equipped for combat, they’re dressed like stereotypical pirates, and you are absolutely positive those swords aren’t plastic this time.

“Do excuse my crew, Captain, they are merely here to secure my treasure. I will honor the arrangements of our duel as is proper between pirates.”

What’s your move, Captain?

>Charge her and try to trip her up. Something with that many gangly legs ought to fall right over!

No pretty girly mech for you.
Can we also shoot the deck under her, to just sort of shoot her into space? It works sometimes.
>>
>>33583168
Your ship would have to disengage its boarding harpoons to get into position since there are several layers of hull underneath your current position. Her mech is probably also equipped for zero-G maneuvering like yours is, unlike shirtless lion men.

Instead of coming up with some snarky reply, you just quickdraw one of your pistols and shoot square at where her hands are resting on the parasol shaft. Sadly, you don’t think you did much damage to that fancy looking mech, but she did drop that parasol with a gasp.

“Rude! That was entirely uncalled for!”

“Pirate.” You justify before shooting at her a few more times, much to her indignation.

She skitters about chasing after her parasol as you keep shooting it just barely out of reach (and her, for good measure). When she gets too close to you, you charge in and close the gap, weaving in and out of her legs before snapping taut, sending her sprawling to one side with a childish squeak.

“This is hardly dignified!” She cries out as you plug a few more rounds into her face, the two of you entangled in a heap. You see some scoring on her armor, but unfortunately not much more damage than that. Why can’t you fight someone who ISN’T nigh-invulnerable for once?

>Sword time! The laser lining of your cutlasses might slice through her armor and if not, you can still shred that dress of hers.
>Overcharge your plaslock pistols, a heaping helping of overheated plasma can punch through anything and there is no possible way this can end badly.

“My apologies, madamme,” you try to fill that last word with so much venom that you can actually feel a little dribbling out of your fangs “perhaps I can even the playing field and make things more fair for the both of us.”

You holster your pistols and unsheathe your cutlasses in one fluid movement, carrying the momentum all the way through with your strike across her back. You feel your cutlasses gain some purchase in her armor as their las-lining pulses with your strikes, but perhaps just as satisfying is the sound of fabric ripping. Unfortunately, you’re so focused on trying to cut through that power armor that you don’t notice her finally grabbing her parasol, nor do you see her pointing it at you.

You certainly feel the pile bunker on the front punching a hole in your hull and flinging you across the room, though.

You pull yourself up from the heap of…yourself that has collected on the floor where you landed to see her towering over your, presumably glaring through that sleek, crimson visor of hers.

“I think, dear captain, that it is high time you paid for your uncouth actions.”

As she stands there glaring, the cuts down the back of her dress take their toll on the garment, causing it to slip down off the front of her into a tattered pile of scraps. Her menncing demeanor all but evaporates with an embarrassed “eep!” as she goes to cover herself before recollecting her wits and aiming her parasol at you anew.

“As I was saying, you shall pay!”

Why would she try to cover herself unless…could it be that her mech is a simsense suit? That she can “feel” everything her mech touches, albeit to an obviously lessened degree? Maybe you could use that to your – oh shit her parasol is also a laser and she’s firing it at you. As you dodge and weave around the hull melting bolts, you think up a plan…

>Try to coil around her again and attempt to crack the armor. It might not do much, but she’ll be incredibly uncomfortable.

While you’re pretty sure you can keep dodging these lasers indefinitely, you have no idea how many charges that thing has, so you better do something quick. Attempting to get in close right now would be suicide, unless you could find a way to stop her assault, even just temporarily. You unholster one of your pistols and with a sad sigh disable the limiters on the plasma infuser and start charging it up. You really hate doing this to works of art like your plaslock pistols, but such is the life of a pirate. With an overburdened whine, you finally release the trigger, blasting the Scarlet Widower right in the chest and blowing out the firing assembly on your pistol at the same time. You wish you could give it a goodbye kiss, but encased in your mech as you are you’ll have to settle for a gentle pat and reholstering.

Also you would probably melt your lips right off.

Thankfully your pistol’s sacrifice was not in vain, as Scarlet’s armor is currently spasming and twitching, overloaded as it is. Most simsense suits can self-repair from this sort of thing, though, so you take advantage of this brief moment of vulnerability to close the gap between the two of your and wrap yourself around her abdomen. By the time she regains control of her armor, you’re already constricting yourself around her, causing her to squirm and writhe in your grasp.

“Would you QUIT that, blast it?!” She cries out in stunted gasps “This is HARDLY dignified! Just WHERE is your pirate’s honor?!”

“’Pirate’s honor’? Kid, you’ve got much to learn. The only thing a pirate is honorably obligated to do is anything it takes to get what you’re after.” As you lecture her, you wiggle the tip of your tail between two leg joints, forcing a fit of giggles out of her.

“I am not a child! I am just…short for my age!”

Wait, what? Oh shit, she really is just a kid. Well this makes things…awkward.

Before you have any time to ruminate on how many more laws you might’ve just broken, your commlink crackles to life, the face of a pained Padstow filling the commscreen of your HUD.

“Good news and bad news, cap’n! We found not just one, but two o’ them chips! Problem is, sommo these robits are a mite tougher n’ th’ ones we was facin’ earlier! Gonna be a tough time gettin’ em back home!”

You sigh. This girl may have a lot of toys, but she still has no idea what she’s doing.

“Look, kid, I think you bit off more than you can chew here.” You lessen your grip just a tad. Still too tight for her to throw you off, but she should be less uncomfortable now.

“I am the Scarlet Widowmaker! Fierce pirate captain of the Silken Gallows! You shall address me as such!”

She writhes angrily in your grasp, trying to throw you off. She may not have the knowledge, but she certainly has the spirit down.

“See, that’s what I’m talking about! ‘The Scarlet Widowmaker’? Are you a superhero or a pirate?”

Her struggling lessens just a tad.

“But plenty of pirates had nicknames like that…What about Voidbeard, or Magmauler Mordrek, or Scaly Dan?”

“Those were names given to them by others, champ. You can’t just give yourself an infamous nickname. It don’t work like that.”

She stops moving entirely, remaining thoughtfully silent.

“…then how does it work?”

“Tell you what, call off those robots of yours and I’ll tell you all about it. Deal?”

“Next up: umbilicals. Don’t use em. Ever. They’re fragile, clumsy, slow, and limit your exit strategies. Stick with boarding harpoons.”

Scarlet nods emphatically as she marches alongside you, no doubt committing your words to both her and her suit’s memory. The walk to where your boys and her bots were fighting over the loot was a short, but productive one. Growing up on Rotuga, you had plenty of piratical pointers to give her and she was more than eager to listen to them all.

Reuniting with your crew, you inspect your spoils: it’s mostly just a bunch of useless priceless Nagan artifacts, but among them is your real prize: a reconfiguration chip! And not just one, but two! It looks like you weren’t the only one who was after Scaly Dan’s treasure. You take out the cube and hold it up to the two chips to see that it only reacts to one of them, but that’s probably just because it only reacts to one chip at a time. Transfixed on your new treasure, you call out over your shoulder.

“Well done everyone. Now why don’t have our newest crewmate have her toys bring this loot aboard our ship, shall we?”

“I am afraid that shall not be necessary, Captain.” Scarlet returns with cold malice. “Jeeves, activate it.”

You barely have time to see an ancient, battered robot butler with no discernible facial features save his chrome handlebar mustache bow down in affirmation before your senses are overwhelmed by a bright flash. You lurch forward to strike, but only succeed in falling over yourself as your mech refuses to react. A flashbang EMP! Those aren’t even on the black market yet! By the time your mech’s emergency backup systems boot up, Scarlet and her robots are all gone.

You’ve been doublecrossed!

You can’t help but smile at the betrayal. Just one meeting with you and she’s already well on her way to becoming a respectable pirate. Still, you need those chips, so you can’t let her get away with this.

Well, chip. Thanks to your totally planned toppling over yourself, you managed to secure one chip and your charter black within your coils. As you backtrack through the hallways you just finished trekking through with Padstow and your Mechaniacs trailing behind you, you open a commlink with Scarlet.

“I see you’re already taking my words to heart there, Scarlet. Or I suppose it’s still ‘Captain Scarlet’, isn’t it?”

“Indeed it is, Captain Valdessa. ’Do whatever you must to claim your prize.’ Those were your words, were they not?”

“You’re not even a kid, are you?”

“It appears as though I am more treacherous than a snake, does it not? Perhaps I will gain one of those oh so unattainable nicknames of nefarious reputation from this treachery…”

You gotta admit, this girl does the whole “stuffy noble” routine well. But that’s not gonna stop you from taking back what you rightfully stole. By the time you catch up with her, she has already left the ship and her umbilical is retracting back into the ship.

Slowly.

Oh. So. Slowly. Retracting.

Time to show her why umbilicals are terrible for piracy.

Blow the side nearest to their ship open, enter from there, and trap 'em.

This girl...

now that I think about it, we're still clamped with docking harpoons, aren't we?

Can't we just sort of pull her ship towards us, so even as she is running away, she's getting closer to us? (also crushing the docking tubes)

Not quite. You're both docked to a ship in the middle of you. Sorry if I made that unclear.

Could they hook her ship at the same time, just in case.

Ah, alright.

So, anons. We still on for apprentice-ing her? Or is she a filthy casual now?
>>
>>33586668
She can still join our flotilla. Plus now she claims to be legal, no court would convict us.
>>
>>33586714
Cernu would though. But hey, let's not argue more.
We need that Jeeves.
>>
>>33586668
I was never for that, actually.
I'm of the mind she should be her own captain doing pirate things, but with tips.

“Follow me, boys, no way we’re letting some foolhardy greenhorn get the better of us! Sol Regret, disengage harpoons and meet us on the other side!”

You get an affirmative all around as you tear open the airlock and aim yourself at the umbilical, letting the vacuum of space give you and your boarding party a leaping start before using the retrojets on your mechs.

Thankfully, the hole in your mech is temporarily sealed with emergency foam as soon as you enter the vacuum of space.

The mechaniacs use their built-in autoguns while Padstow and you use your plaslock pistols, the whole lot of you aiming at the connection point between the umbilical and the ship. Cracks are already starting to form before you touch down, the Mechaniacs using their own pile bunkers to make short work of the already weakened corridor. At the same time, the Sol Regret flies upwards from below the cargo ship, perpendicular to both it and the Silken Gallows. As it speeds by, it sinks its harpoons into the umbilical and helps tear it off and away from Scarlet’s ship.

A rush of air as well as a dozen militarized servbots rush past you as you compromise the atmosphere, but Scarlet and her Robutler remain unmoved, no doubt wearing magnetized footwear.

“It would appear the Young Lady is still being accosted by these…ruffians.” The robutler observes.

“Captain!” Scarlet protests. “When I am wearing this armor I am your captain and you are my first mate, Jeeves!”

He gives a curt bow “Apologies, Captain. Shall I dispose of them for you?”

“It will not be necessary, Jeeves. I think it time we were leaving.”

“And how do you intend to…no, Young La-Captain, I cannot advise you doing that.”

“Rule one of dirty fighting…” She calls out as she backs herself as far as she can against the sealed end of the umbilical and begins to curl up in a ball. You rush forward, not wanting to give her the time to do anything.

Only to be bowled over by a giant, side-rolling armored Arkanid along with the rest of your crew.

“Why didn’t you tell me she could do that?!” You shout out at Padstow, nursing your spinning head.

“How was I supposed to know them demmed gumbutts could do that?! I ain’t never seen that before in me life!”

“…always do what your opponent thinks you can’t!” She taunts cheerfully, hurtling through space towards her ship, her Robutler dutifully flying at her side via jets built into his hands and feet.

Damn damn damn! You can nab the rest of the loot from those spaced servbots, but she still has the chip! If you want it back, you’re gonna have to follow her on your ship, and judging by those hyperlight emissions her engine is giving off, she won’t be around for much longer.

>Get back to the ship and chase her down! You can trace her jump and then get there before her. That ought to make her think twice about stealing what you stole!
>Try to bargain the rest of the artifacts for the chip. After all, she might not know its true value.
>Just let her have it for now. You got the chip you came here for ands the charter block will guide you back to the other if you even need it.

I do like the idea of a rival on our treasure hunt, but we can't let her get away here.

Get comforts from Cernu.

It's only properly piratical to give chase.

I mean, there's a PROCEDURE for these things.

But it's not really super important because we will be coming back for it later.

So like, only chase her a bit, then
>>33589250
once she does something stupid like flies through a deadly asteroid field to lose us.
>>

I agree, we gotta at least TRY to do this.

You are NOT letting her get away with your loot! That would get you laughed out of every tavern from here to Rotuga. Well, the ones that even know who you are at least. Which should be a lot more now that Admiral Graveside declared war on you and all, so you can’t let some newbie noble screw up all your hard work! Your boarding party gathers up all the loot that spilled out of the umbilical when you ripped it off as Rosco locks onto the Silken Gallows’ jump signature and prepares to trace it through hyperspace and Cernu prepares to step through the Dub in pursuit. By the time you curl up in your captain’s chair, Scarlet has already hightailed it out of there and you’re ready to do the same.

“Navigator Yorocontria, jump us right in front of them if you would. I want to look our little treacherous friend right in the eye before we open fire.”

“Jumping commence in three…two…one…”

You feel that familiar tug and hear that familiar sound of The Dub, but something seems…off this time. That split-second of eternity smells burnt more than smokey, yanks at your hearts rather than gently tugs, the gentle throbbing that normally surrounds you has become a screeching mechanical pounding, and paranoia replaces the usual calm you feel.

A shriek coming immediately behind you and an abrupt slamming back to reality breaks you out of your own mind. You swivel around and search the root node that contains Cernu, something in you already knowing exactly what’s wrong.

She isn’t there. It wasn’t closed as if she had returned to the green room, it was still wide open and active. She was just…gone.

“Give me a visual right now, Rosco! The whole ship, outside the ship, every last damn thing.” You shout a little too desperately. Where is she?! What the hell just happened?!

“Cap, how DID you and the first mate meet anyways?”

“I don’t see what that has to do with…” You start, before looking at the viewscreen, finding yourself in the middle of a forest. No, not a forest. An armada. An armada of ships grown from seed and molded from living wood and leaf. An armada of ships with the express purpose of preserving the secrecy of those that live within them.

Secrets you stole a long, long time ago.

Plant armada: Surrender and no harm will come to you.

Anyways, thanks for runnin'. See you next time and all that.
I don't know who normally archives this stuff, but I'll vote on that when it's up.

>>33589932
I think we happened to plot a course over the course of the plant fleet.
>>
Sorry for the abruptish ending and that hour long break (which is part of why I start so late), but I was summoned to dinner and this felt like a good place to call it.

Good news is I should be able to run again tomorrow at roughly the same time for longer and uninterrupted.

I can still answer any questions you might have on my phone if you have any.
>>
>>33589966
Thanks a ton for running! It's my first time in a full thread, it was fun.
I'm not clear on how they got Cernu out of our ship though. Not only needing the tech, but also notice her, locate her and make the teleport or whatever in such a short time, looks like we're in pretty deep shit.
>>
>>33589984
>I'm not clear on how they got Cernu out of our ship though.
That is certainly something to ponder.
>>
>>33589966
How well are the plant-people likely to welcome Valdessa? Full party, right? Right?
Fuck
>>
An Armada of angry plants and the spider-girl escaped with our loot, after taking advantage of our friendly and generous personality. Damn, Valdessa is having a bad day.
>>
>>33590143
She may or may not be very welcome. They might have even thought they were the good guys here.

You, however, will be treated as nothing short of a blight.
>>
>>33590274
I hope to be upgraded to "That boyfriend who is a terrible influence on our little girl"

Especially if she has a tattoo now.
>>
>>33590333
A good goal I think.
>>
>>33589966
I bet that Scarlet rapscallion set us up! Eagerly awaiting what comes next time.
>>
I forgot to archive it, but looks like someone got that covered for me. Thanks, anon!
