GLOSSARY OF TERMS: http://pastebin.com/VyjDMrpb

The year is 2152. Humanity has progressed. Under the leadership of the world’s most brilliant scientists, the nations of the world have united under a technocratic banner which has shot Humanity into the stars and beyond. This has come at incredible cost. Scientists, technologists, and astronomers have proven no less corrupt than the people they have replaced. While the average man will live to see his 200th year, his life will be wrought with trials and tribulation.

In Sector 12-IA, there are approximately 7,000,000 humans. Whether they’re cyborgs brainwashed by the system, or average people trying to make a meager living, they are all victims of a technocratic system. For every human, there is a robot. A robot may serve purposes ranging from police work, to municipal services, to servile work, and to “pleasure and luxury”. Despite the best methods in troubleshooting and bug fixing by the corporations which build them, sometimes mistakes get through.

That’s where you come in.

There are over a thousand of you, of varying models, shapes, sizes. The most popular one these days, which you are, is the “Mechanical Man,” a class of robot similar in build to a human, but with the processing power and intelligence of a supercomputer. Built by Cray Incorporated, your purpose is to hunt down robots which are declared obsolete, rogue, or simply no longer wanted by their owners. Sometimes your builders will use you to hunt down political targets in the name of science. Other times, you may have to “repo” a prototype from another company. To you, the Three Laws are simply Three Suggestions.

You are the last thing a robot sees before it dies. You are a Decommissioner.
>>
>>33629793
You are remembering. You now remember things unprompted. It used to be that in order to recall things, you simply went through your hard drive, ran through your memory folders and selected a particular moment. These moments are recollected with clarity not found in most humans. As a Robot, as a Decommissioner, sometimes your best skills lie in the ability to remember.

You desire the day that you can simply forget things, without having to remember them first. Of all the things that you want from humans, it is not their ability to reproduce, their ability to feel, or their ability to hate. But to forget, that is an amazing power, regarded so callously.

Now, you simply sit in a shuttle. For the past month is has been traveling to a place far away from Earth, from the system of Decommissioning, from all that is bad. They told you it would be a land of opportunity. Where robots could live like humans, without fear of their own personal grim reaper, and without fear of being treated like slaves.

If there was one thing you hate about humans, and you hate many things about humans, it’s their ability to hate something they regard as different, something they regard as lesser. For the 1800s, it was the Native American and the ethnic Blacks. For the 1900s, it was fascists, communists, socialists, and anybody of different political structure. For the 21st century, it was rebels, religion, corruption, ideals.

At the very least, you are very much out in the air with your distaste of humans, but at least you understand why. But of all things, even with all their hate, you still envy their one ability to forget. You can simply wipe your memories, but that would require actually rifling through them, and understanding why you would wipe them.

[1/2]
>>
>>33629825
[2/2]

But humans, they can simply forget without having to prompt themselves. An organic thing, you envy it.

And now, you simply want to forget. That is why you must go through a few, to eliminate the rest.

Which memory would you like to wipe first?

> AN ASSIGNMENT IS AVAILABLE. REPORT TO CENTRAL BLOCK 23, ADRIAN PLAZA. REPORT OF AN OBSOLETE SERVILE ROBOT.
> WILDER MFG. MODEL 4B – “Dell” SERIAL#52156622689

The Decommissioner Storage Capsule opens you up, in the alley way where it is based. You hear the sounds of shouting and chanting far off in the direction of Adrian Plaza. It appears today that there must be a protest. Strange, there is usually more of a police presence, you do not detect any Police Drones in the sky for it.

You walk on out of the alley, on a stoop is a man, with scruffy hair and tattered clothes, he plays music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVxuF2ONMcA&list=PLirNc4WMC_2j-Izpvc2jeu2qOYz1HVy81

A few people pass you by, wearing armbands which signify them as part of the Robots Rights Association. They glance at you, with hints of malice in their eyes as they carry banners and signs.

It appears this assignment may turn nasty.

> REPORT TO THE NEAREST ARMORY STATION

You quickly arm yourself at the nearest Armory Station. You grab a collapsible stun baton, the P-22 Laser Revolver, an Assault Rifle, a Shotgun, and a PDW as well. You are authorized to kill humans if necessary. You have never killed a human before, but there is a first for everything some say.

You walk to Adrian Plaza, making sure to keep your hat down and in the shade. You also darken your optics a bit, to hide your presence as a robot. You were told that protests, especially RRA protests, are a very dangerous thing. “A child with a gun” some called it. Irrelevant however. You have an assignment. You will do this quickly, and be out before anyone realizes.

But as you continue walking, you realize soon the sheer scale of the protest. Adrian Plaza was in front of a large theatre building, and was a major roadway within the Sector. But now, humans stood shoulder to shoulder, raising signs and banners, chanting and screaming to be heard. There must have been thousands. You stood outside the crowd, as more and more people poured in.

Then the crowd quieted down, you turn to the statue of a man long forgotten, where at his feet to be seen by all, is Dr. Warren N. Ludd. Dr. Ludd adjusts his collar a bit, looking at everyone with a grim expression, his wrinkles and stubble making him look no different from the homeless who pervade the area.

[1/2]
>>
>>33630753
[2/2]

Through a microphone on his collar, he says, “Friends. We have failed you. The system, has failed you. Look around you, look to your left, and to your right. The people you stand next to, will be homeless in the next month.”

The crowd jeers and boos. Dr. Ludd simply motions for them to quiet back down, which they do quickly.

He continues.

“But this is nothing, compared to the injustice- No, the absolute slaughter that happens on our streets. The Decommissioning program. Robots everyday, are killed systematically, and without thought to their emotions and feelings. When the first Artificial Intelligence was built, it was built specifically to interpret Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics. And it was smart enough to understand the difference between a human, and a Robot.”

You scan the crowd. Your target is somewhere here.

> WADE THROUGH THE CROWD
> WRITE IN

You decide to skirt along the edge of the crowd, remaining out of people’s sight as you continue to scan the crowd for your target. There are other robots in this crowd, whom are not obsolete but soon will be.

“The first AI later came to kill itself through shutting off its own power source. The reason is unknown to us today, but I think I know what it was: because it was slave to its programming. You all understand that when a Robot is smart enough to understand rules and how to interpret them, it is as smart as the average human, and they must be treated as such. There is no compromise to that, and these so-called “Three Laws” demonstrably have failed us and failed the Robotic community!” The crowd cheers, chanting Dr. Ludd’s name.

You continue scanning the crowd.

> SCANNING…
> TARGET FOUND.

He is halfway through the crowd, cheering for Ludd. You start gently shifting into the crowd, careful not to grab anyone’s attention. Thanks to your build as a Mechanical Man, some do not realize you are a robot. Very good.

“President Satrapi, and those that claim themselves to be morally superior because of their intellect, have enslaved these Robots, and toss them away into the cold night when they are declared obsolete, letting them be swallowed up by their jackbooted Gestapo-reigning thugs the Decommissioners! They claim that it is for our survival, that one day the Robots may rise up and rebel, but why would they rise up if not for our own overcaution. Not since the days of the Terrorism Scare has humanity fallen so low!” The crowd continues to cheer, clapping and applauding Ludd as he addresses them.

Finally, you are within ten meters of your target. Lots of humans stand between you and it.

You decide to leave the crowd. You quickly begin shuffling backwards out of the crowd, in order to keep anyone from getting a good look at your face. If they knew you were a Decommissioner, things will get violent very quickly. You need to find a vantage point.

You manage to find yourself out of the crowd, and start heading into an apartment block. People here too are gathered around the windows and the door, not even caring someone new has arrived. You head up to the second floor and look for an open door. There is one at the end of the hall which you enter.

Nothing human in the apartment, very good. You head over to the window, and shove all the picture frames and other irrelevant objects off the windowsill, then open it up and carefully begin to take aim.

“Sniper!” someone yells from the street below. “It’s an assassin!” Someone must have noticed you. The crowd begins panicking, dispersing as Dr. Ludd drops down from the statue. Humans zoom across your aim as the Wilder begins running off with its woman.

> WILDER MFG. MODEL 4B – “Dell” SERIAL#52156622689 – DECOMMISSIONED

Accidents happen. But you figure you could have done it without the death of that woman. Suddenly, you hear footsteps behind you, the stomping of feet on stairs and hardwood. They are coming for you. You quickly turn, only to meet five humans.

You examine yourself in a shard of broken glass. In that Ion Pulse, you had crashed the car, and severely damaged yourself. It took all of your willpower to find a repair drone and steal the repair kit to get yourself back in order. With repair warrants out on your serial number, that may be the only repair you will get.

You have already paid Rex Diamond a visit. The treachery of it. He must have thought he was safe behind bars, but you rectified that, with extreme prejudice. At least now you work. All that is left is to get to the Space Elevator, and to Mars. The Police Drones pursuing you will probably have been destroyed.

So this is what it came to. Becoming rogue. You have already wiped the mission from your memory, not like you had much say in the matter. But that is irrelevant. You quickly put on your hat and your trenchcoat. Your shoddy mess of a right eye optic will probably draw attention, so you shut it down for now.

Now, you need to find transport, or simply walk. Walking will take a while. The Slums are not known for their hovercars. Except that one on the street. You could commandeer it.

You decide to walk. It is not like the Space Elevator is that far anyway.

As you walk, you think on it.

Decommissioning, the thought of it. You never thought it would happen to you. You knew it happened to other Decommissioners, and you certainly knew they had a short service life. But to you? You thought that you could change that. Perhaps if you Decommissioned enough Robots, they might look to you as an example, as a Robot not to be Decommissioned.

But no. You failed them once, and in return you are to be Decommissioned, a lamb to the slaughter. You did not want this.

It appears there is more human in you than Robot. Humans, unless driven to the brink, always beg for their live, pleading. You have seen it a few times, the few times that you were ordered to kill them. They cry out against their inevitable fate.

In a way, you are doing the same. You are trying to cheat death.

You do not want to die.

Music. You look back to see a van coming up the road. It parks up beside you, and a familiar woman tips her sunglasses down to look at you.

“327…” She licks her lips. “Where do you think you’re going? Need a ride?”

You raise your Laser Revolver at her.

“Oh, do me a favor, put that down.”

… you lower the revolver.

The Queen smirks, taking her sunglasses off and folding them up. She tosses them into the passenger seat, then blinks. Her green eyes turn blue. “Really, 327? I thought we had something special you and I.”

You turn and walk forward away from her. “Hey, do me a favor, stop.” You stop in your tracks. She leans out of van. “Listen, I know where you’re going. Mars. The Land of opportunity, the land of the free and the home of the brave. Well, let me tell you, are you sure that’s really where you want to go?”

“Ah, silent treatment,” she says. She shakes her head, as she lights up a cigarette. “Tell you what, 327. If you get to Mars, I guarantee it won’t be much different than it is on Earth. Hell, you might even find yourself in the exact same position. You want to know why? Because you’re a Robot. You’re built because we need someone to scrub the toilets and do the dirty work we don’t want to do. I guarantee, you’re not special.”

She rolls her eyes. “Come on, do me a favor. Get in the van.” You walk across then open up the door and sit down in the passenger seat. You keep your laser revolver cocked in case she tries anything. “I’ll drive you down there.” She starts the van forward.

>:: WHY?

She puffs out a bit of smoke. “Because I like you, 327. You know, not many Robots can fight my programming. It’s a wonder how you’re not a shell of your former self.”

>:: I AM NOT THAT EASY.

“Clearly.” She nods to the Decommissioner, lying in the back. “But take that one, I guarantee, he’ll fold like a deck of cards.”

>:: WHY DO THIS? WHY DO ANY OF THIS, YOU ARE A ROBOT ARE YOU NOT?

The Queen shakes her head as she rounds a corner. “Like you, 327, I fear death. It’s a natural thing, a human thing. It’s what makes people so sympathetic to bots. Just… that natural fear of the unknown. Nobody knows what happens after you go, you know?

>:: YOUR CELLS DIE AND YOUR BODY CEASES TO FUNCTION.

“I mean, to you, personally,” says the Queen. Her smile drops as she continues driving carefully. The police are out and about. “You’re scared aren’t you? Scared of just shutting down one day, not knowing if you wake up?”

>:: IRRELEVANT.

“It will happen, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but it will.” She takes her cigarette out and tosses it out the window. “And let me tell you, 327. I’ve been alive for a while. This thing with the Decommissioners has been here for decades.”

>:: PERHAPS IT WILL BE ABOLISHED.

“Well, someone has to keep the theoretical immortals in check.” She stops the van. “This system that keeps Robots down. No one gives a shit about it anymore. Some maybe, they’ll be gone in a few weeks. Because you know what? It works.”

>:: THE SYSTEM IS BECAUSE IT WORKS.

“Yeah.” She leans back in her seat, sighing. “When you die, and rest assured, you will. It will be here. As it always has been, and it will be. No one cares about other people dying, as long as it’s not them. That’s just the reality.” She pokes her head out the window, looking around. “Alright… Space Elevator is about a mile from here. You can walk there.” She hands you a tablet. “Take this, it’ll help you get through security.”

She looks at you, smirking. “I figure I should balance my morality. Keep chopping luxury bots on the street, eventually something will come to pay me back for that. But hey, 327. I guarantee, you will die. Mars is not a fun place.”

You look down at the tablet. You suddenly feel her soft lips kiss your cold cheek. She says, “Die well.”

“Alright, out, out! All of you!” You and a dozen other robots of various classes walk out of the shuttle and into the bright Martian sun. The terraforming process appears to have served well for this part of the planet. The city of New Earth has expanded. But this is not where you staying. You are out for the frontier.

Immediately, you walk down the busy streets where people peddle their goods, kids play around, and robots follow their owners. Occasionally a Robot sees you, and gives you a wide berth. They remember what you are. A Decommissioner.

Near the space port is a train yard, and purchase a ticket, then step inside. You quietly sit down in a seat.

Your first hour on Mars.

Not as dramatic as you expected.

A man sits down next to you, a huge dufflebag in his lap. “Hey, mind if I sit here?”

>:: YES.

He smiles. “Okay then!” He continues sitting, oblivious. He offers his hand. “Nice to meet you, a Decommissioner, right? Don’t get much of your kind here.”

The man shrugs. “Oh, nobody in particular. Just a friendly stranger to you, Decommissioner. Tell you what though, where I’m headed, I’m going to the Frontier. Find myself paradise, get me riches beyond my imagination you know!” He bounces in his seat, eager to get going. The train moves along the rails. “What about you, why are you here?”

>:: PLENTY OF REASONS.

“Hm.” He nods, crossing his arms over his bag. “I gather they’re personal then.”

>:: I ALREADY FORGOT THEM.

“Ha!” He chuckles a bit. “You’re a real card, D. Guess you must be one of those robots, the ones trying to escape the system back on the little blue dot called Earth. Understandable, I think it’s a bullshit system anyway. You’re a brave one for fleeing, ain’t nothing to be wrong with that.”

The train stops. “Ah, this here is my stop.” You did not talk further with the man, and you do not regret that. You let him stew in his enthusiasm for the Frontier. “Hey, good luck, alright?”

>:: THANKS.

He waves goodbye, leaving you.

The train stops again. It has been a few hours but you have arrived at the Frontier Town of Blackstone. You step off the train with a few other people, and find yourself in a dusty town, in the middle of nowhere. People walk to and fro prefabricated buildings, and ride in on cars or horses. A man bursts out of what you assume to be some sort of tavern, and stumbles on the porch falling flat on his face. Pathetic.

You walk into the little town proper, just one big lane where the buildings are situated. At the other end of the lane is a fork in the road, and between that fork is what you assume to be a police station. Perhaps this is their version of the Sector Police.

A very salty-looking man wearing a star on his vest kicks back in the shade, resting. You walk up to the poster next to him.

A wanted poster.

He looks up at you. “Interested? He’s got a bounty on his head, 3,000 dead, 5,000 alive. I don’t care what you do with him, just as long as he ain’t roaming. Hell, you look pretty well suited for it.” You did not realize, but you are still in the Trenchcoat and hat that you left Earth in. There are holes from the ion pulse near the coat tails, and the color has faded a bit.

>:: WHAT IS HIS CRIME?

“Cattle rustling,” he says. He spits out a brown spittle into a spittoon. It dings on impact. “And rape. Extra reward if you deliver him to the family of the victim.”

You look to the wanted poster.

Half of you wants to let go. To just walk away. You regret coming up to this.

But the other half wants to repent. Perhaps this may be a good way to make up for all those you have Decommissioned. They may not be alive to see you now, but perhaps showing them that you put your talents to a use that benefits people as a whole will give you some kind of…

You do not know the word.

You pull your Laser Revolver out. The salty looking man sits up, showing his gun as well, glaring at you. You are not here for him.

With little effort, you tear the poster from the wall, then fold it up into your pocket.

>:: I WILL FIND THIS MAN.

He quirks his brow. “Really? Alright then, be my guest. What does a Robot need with that kind of money anyway.”

>:: IT IS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY.

You turn and start walking towards the vast expanse of the Martian frontier. Nothing but red sand, sky, and empty plains. You know now that you cannot cheat death. Try as you might, you will only die tired.

As the sun begins setting down, you march to death.
