You've attained more mastery over the energy ball, capable of sending off smaller ones that arer noticeably less draining. Seralana's helped you out a lot with training control.
You asked her who those dark Araraki were in the moments that the two of you were alone. She's told you that they're the ones that don't fit in with the rest of the Araraki. The ones that can't control a particular thirst. Gluttons.
Yet when you asked her why she had powers like them, she became quite sullen.

Promising that you won't, you're just glad that she's being more open with you now.

With each day of conditioning and training you feel that home is a bit closer, even though it's still so far.
Hao's preparations come to something of a fruition. Between your and his efforts there are enough volunteers for the crew of the hunt and a boat fit with what Hao referred to as “Imperial Impaler,” a large mechanism fitted with barbs and a very real corkscrew effect to it. Should the beast attempt to clamber onto the boat, it'll receive a frightful wound, likely even the killing blow.

Yet you refuse to begin without Akabaron, and you're curious as to what's taken him so long. With Hao's permission and a small personal guard with Nala included, you take a ship bound for Smelda to see what that old cat's been up to... Could they really replicate the repel technology?

After a week's voyage, you hear that this should be the day that you arrive at Smelda. Hao's guards stand around the ship. They wear the clothes of dock workers and shiphands, even Yasake. You had asked them why, and they quite simply said “This is a place that's easier to blend into than stand out. You and Marine were given clothes to do the same, wearing your armor underneath dirty shiphand garments, and peasant's clothes.

Heading out onto deck with the familiar rocking of a ship that's left the island swiftcurrent, you smell the air, it reeks of ash, sulfur and more ash. The sky around this place is dark and grey. In the distance you can see fumes pouring out of the top of mountains, orange-yellow and red veins running out along the sides.
Could it be? You'd only read about them, Volcanoes. This is the first time you've ever seen one! Something in you suffers a small thrill of childish glee. It's kind of breathtaking. Or rather it would be if you could spare the breath.
Yasake hands you a cloth, “Put it over your mouth. The ash of their mountains is toxic, even if they're able to tugh it out, it doesn't mean that we need to as well.”

The land is desolate and grey. The sun is obscured by ash and smog, casting this place into a dismal light. There's not a single green tree, but their withered ashen frames remain, marking where a forest may have once stood.

The port here is barely anything to speak of, just an outcropping of rocks with houses made of metal refuse. Rusted is the dominating color amongst this bleak land of black and gray.
Of note, there are a few larger structures that remind you of the warehouses back home in both their size and lack of complexity.

As you finish fixing the cloth to your face, Yasake waves his arm as though drawing back a curtain, “Welcome to the Isle of Smelda, one of the three Smolder homes.” There's a sarcastic drip to his voice that you ignore. You and Marine step off the ship, with the disguised guards, a few staying behind to haul the meat transported upon the ship. The lifeline of the Smolder. Yasake warns that you all make yourselves scarce lest you see the feeding frenzy that is the first Smolders come to eat.
“Like samehadas” He likens them to.

The disembark is just as he'd warned. There are already Smolder gathering. Some young with still a scrap of pride in them as they push out their chests, snarling at the lot of you as you pass. Others are just weary elders, come out looking for a scrap to eat. Some of the younger ones stand beside these ones as though to guard. Likely, they're looking out for their parents and grandparents.

Some meat's thrown overboard into the crowd and it dissolves into mild fighting that's broken up with mighty roars of what you might call overseers or some kind of civic guard.

You look back, eyes lingering a bit too long and see a mighty female end a fight with a roar as she takes a haunch of monster meat for herself. You content yourself with the thought that it must be for her cubs.

Your party walks through the port village, Wagons pulled by mighty males tromp on through. In an off-the-table trade, Yasake hands over some especially shiny bone sticks that make the male's eyes glitter. Shoving them into his belt, Yasake says something and you're all pulled by him to the next town, rumbling over rocky roads and seeing the vast, emptiness that is their lands.
Geysers here and there gush with mighty steam that scalds the very air, breaches in the ash and earth give way to hot volcanic veins. There's a chill further inland as you draw away from the warm oceanic winds, yet the natural heat of this place seems to comfort everyone else. This place is better than the Ararakian wastes at the very least.

Eventually you come to vast bubbling lakes of tar and pitch, large pockets exploding with the intense smells of the subterranean. It's beyond there that you see a city. Rising high into the air, wrought of steel and blood and piercing into the sky beyond the volcanic cloud. “This is the prime city of Smelda.” Yasake informs you, “I've been here many times before by order of my lord.”

As you come close, You see scrap-houses littering the outskirts of the great spire.

“That's... unusual.” Yasake mumbles dangerously low, staring up at a great frame positioned outside of the city...

As you near, there's a a large gathering outside, many other carts and cartpullers like yours drawing in with supply and material in the back.

“What is it?” You ask, keeping your voice low.

“If I'm not mistaken... The top of that is a keel.”

The Smolders are building a ship of steel.

You need to find Akabaron.

Yasake's sense of urgency carries you all forward, striking down Smolders that attempt to stop any of you with blindingly swift strikes. The guards at your rear hide the bodies before returning to the group, keeping up the pace for a time.

“We must speak with Akabaron and hear what is going on. This is treason.”

“Treason?” You ask, you've heard it before. Once in passing.

“Offense to the empire. This threatens everything we've accomplished.”

“But what about the hunt, the ship?”

“It would have been under our control. As it is now, we need to take him and return to our ship. Force him to stand trial and seize the shipyard. Though it could be too late if there is work being done in their other colonies.” Yasake bites back, “How could they have learned this?”

Yasake narrows his eyes upon you, obtrusively blowing air through the black cloth upon his cere. “I will allow this then. Meet us in the outskirts by their curfew or we'll come looking.” He rises up, waving to the guards, “With me.” They break away, leaping through the structures effortlessly.

Once there, you see many strong and young Smolder firing off their flame to temper steel, cut out sections. And plenty of other forge-work with their bare claws. The beat of hammers is deafening and the thundering cries of directors and taskmasters.

You stand at the edge, barbed fences holding back the potentially unsavory.

You and Marine find a moment to hop over when one of them isn't looking, only to be seen by another wary party.

They challenge you in Smolder tongue, that nasally and harsh speak.

Taken aback you try to remember the words that Akabaron had told you so long ago... “Je reap chakuen ojur des lan vize des driens.”

The Smolder snorts, flame bursting from their nostrils, the clash of metal on metal beating now inside your head. He says something in smolder and you get the feeling that he's asking who you came for. “Vi-Smohkan Akabaron.”

Nodding, he leads you through the work. The area's a complete construction zone with countless Smolder participating in this project. You can feel the hope welling within so many of them, as well as the gnawing hunger that pains them deep down. So many of them are gaunt, in scraps or even entirely naked. Their ribs cling to their skin, emaciated bellies despite strong arms. These are the ones that work the hardest, that believe the most in what they're doing.

It's troubling actually. Being able to feel these things. These people have a hope for the future.

They're different from Kahkori that are so well developed, minding more trivial things, or even the Araraki that are all unified by a singular belief. These are a desperate people.

If this fails, if they can't do this to help themselves... Then they're broken.

I've got a suggestion. It's from here that you reclaim your gear and settle in for the week. With Akabaron's approval you gain a rough understanding of Smolder firearms and how to operate some of their fancier devices such as mines, and grenades. They know to mix certain distilled chemicals together to create such explosive effects.

You take some walks through the outskirts, under guard with Marine at your side. Part of you feels bad, acting as a tourist and observing the sick and starving. But likewise, it's a sobering experience. It puts things into perspective. Marine shares some of her food, treating them all so kindly.

“It's like this in some parts of Pewter too. Silph doesn't do anything about it and no one understands why.”

You feel that it's terrible, yet you don't say anything. Marine already has too many reasons to stay as it is...

Akabaron teaches you proper form for firing, gun or no gun.
