You and Ranthix come up to Borislav’s cabin. It’s a quaint little place, but solid, and seems like it’s been here longer than some of the trees have. An old pickup is parked just off the dirt road nearby, alongside Ranthix’s huge yellow Hummer – one of the original ones, not one of those H2 or H3 things. If you slapped some desert colored war paint on it, it’d be ready to be shipped off to whatever Middle Eastern themed country your team’s invading today.

You flip out your cell phone – a temporary flip phone thing, because you probably melted your old hand-me-down one on Halloween – and check it, because sometimes, you get one bar here. But you have zero bars. Must be the clouds or the wind. You squint up at the unhappy grey sky. You like unhappy grey skies.
>>
>>33707596

A big black bird flies overhead and swoops down, landing on a tree branch between you and the cabin. It’s probably the biggest raven you’ve ever seen – you know, if you don’t count having seen this raven before.
It squawks and caws mockingly at you and Ranthix and dances in place, raising one foot and then the other as it calls down slander on your heads in bird speak.

Ranthix glowers up at the bird. “YOU’RE THE LANDMASTER, CAN’T ORDER YOUR BIRD’S SILENCE?” he asks. “IF IT FAILS TO COOPERATE,THEN WARN IT THAT I WILL EAT IT IF HE FAILS TO MEET THE DEMAND.”

But you’re pretty sure this isn’t a regular raven.

>I’m pretty sure reasoning with birds is not in my moves list, Ranthix.
>Where's your sense of humor? It’s a dancing raven. A dancing raven!
>Borya, it was funny the first time, but you’ve got to change it up or it falls flat.

You snicker at the raven’s dance. “Okay okay,” you say, “it’s just as funny the second time.”

Ranthix glares at the bird. “HOW IS IT YOU TOLERATE THIS CREATURE’S ANTICS NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE?”

“Oh come on,” you say, nudging Ranthix in the arm. “Where’s your sense of humor? I mean, it’s a dancing raven!” you say. You kick your feet a little in imitation of the bird’s dance, and wave your arms like wings to show Ranthix just how funny it really is. “A dancing raven!!” you exclaim.

Ranthix looks down at you with distaste. And says, “FINE!” before storming off toward the cabin.

You look back up at the raven, which gives little coughing squawks as if laughing.

“So, what’s the news, sky friend?” you ask the bird.

There’s a muted flash of light, and then Borislav sits on the tree branch in place of the bird, still chuckling to himself, his staff clutched in hand. “Sevonia, pagoda ochen horoshaya budyet,” he says, smiling down at you. He’s in an orange jacket and a pair of sweatpants, and a pair of flip flops hang off his feet.

“Hey, I actually understood something!” you say, excited. He said the weather was going to be good today. You can speak Russian! “Oh wait, I mean uh,” you say, trying to throw the thing you just said into the other language. “Ya ponimala… shto?”

“Shto-ta,” Borislav corrects you, and then hops down from the tree branch. He lands in a crouch, and then pulls himself up. “Vot, umnitchka takaya. But let us on English, okay?”
>>
>>33708870

“Right,” you say. Borya’s English is a lot better than your Russian is, but that’s probably because he has nobody to talk to ever except in English. “But you should probably say, ‘Let’s speak in English.’ Or just Let’s speak English, it’d be kind of weird to say ‘in English’ like that.”

“Ah. Let’s… speak English,” Borya says.

“Cool,” you say.

The two of you catch up to Ranthix, and then head inside the cabin. It has three rooms. A tiny bathroom, a tiny bedroom, and a tiny main room with kitchen attachment. Everything smells like nature and sawdust, probably because there’s bunches of wood carvings piled everywhere. There’s a big bear head carved out of wood hung up on one hall, along with a dozen walking sticks traced with interesting, Slavic patterns, to varying degrees of extensiveness.

You’ve come up a couple times, but this was your first time spending the night. A light backpack (yours) is stuffed over in one corner, by the couch that folds out into a bed. Ranthix was also up here somewhere, but you’re not even sure he slept at all. He walked out at like, eleven o’clock and never came back.

Anyway, you slouch in and grab your backpack while Borislav starts throwing things on the stove. “Lunch time!” he says, then looks over at you and Ranthix. “You like BLT, yes?”

You shrug. “I don’t know,” you say. “Probably?” You think you had a BLT once, maybe. You can’t remember if it was good or not.

“THE ‘B’ MEANS BACON, SPAWNLING,” Ranthix says, crouching down by Borislav’s fridge. He opens it up and pulls out a pack of meat, and hands it to Borya, who’s only an arm’s length away for the demon. “IT IS A SANDWICH WHICH WOULD BE AT EASE IN THE MOST DECADENT HALLS OF THE STYGIAN LORDS.”

“Decadent halls, huh?” you ask. A sandwich with bacon? There’s no way somebody could screw that up. You give Borislav the go symbol. “Sounds good,” you say.

“Good to go,” Borya says, beaming. He throws a bunch of bacon on the pan, and sizzling hits the air like an explosion.

The smell hits you immediately – raw pork, begging to be eaten and stuff, probably.

Ranthix leaves Borislav to his cooking, and ducks back out the door. “I WILL COLLECT YOUR KILL FROM THE MORNING,” he says, pausing. “THE MEAT SHOULD PROVIDE EXCELLENT COMPLIMENT, AND ALSO THERE IS NOT ENOUGH FOR ME, LEST I SHOULD EAT GRANOLA.”

“Good luck with that,” you say. “I’m going to get changed or something.” Seriously, you’re a mess. It was a good thing that deer was by a stream, or else you might very well still have its blood on you. You remember for a second that Reeber’s not with you, but it’s not a very concerning thought. He could probably survive in the woods longer than you could, alone.

Ranthix leaves in a huff, and you leave Borya to his task while you freshen up. The shower only has cold water, but after the beating you’ve taken, you don’t really care. A while later you come out in your one change of clothes, taking shelter from the cold in your hoodie. You don’t think this part of the forest ever gets above sixty degrees, and Borya’s place isn’t much warmer.

Despite the cold, you feel a lot better being clean and all that. (-15 Stress: 6/100)

You walk over by the kitchen and see Borislav with a bunch of bread and lettuce and chopped tomatoes, along with a plate stacked high with bacon. He lays another few strips out on the plate from the pan, and fills it back up with yet more meat.

The smell of it would probably make you drool if you weren’t paying attention. You take a seat and angle it so you have a good view of Borya. “So,” you say, “on a scale of one to ten, ten being cool, one being not cool at all, how cool are you with Ranthix hanging out here? I mean, he did kind of kick your ass one time.”
>>
>>33709947

You feel that you can get away with the scale comment thing complexity-wise, because you’ve run him through it before a few times.

“Eh, seven, I think,” says Borya, looking briefly over his shoulder at you. “He is ally now. But he eat all food in house, so eight or more is not allowed.”

You wanted some drama or something. People older than you are can be pretty lame sometimes. “Boring,” you say. “So, have you given more thought as to where the landwell is? I mean, I don’t really have any idea.”

“Yes,” says Borislav, turning around. “I think for San Fransisco, good place to find landwell is in park,” he says. “There are many parks in city. We will look there, before anything. I will come for two, three days, and we will find it.”

Well. That doesn’t sound too hard, you think. “Right.”
>>
>>33709947

A little while later, Ranthix comes back with your dead deer slung over a shoulder. In short order he’s got a big bonfire going outside, and he’s torn the animal apart and is roasting a couple of its legs. It’s kind of disgusting to watch – and also kind of appetizing. Anyway, after Ranthix collects a couple sandwiches, he heads back outside and you and Borislav eat BLTs, which are pretty much the best as far as you can tell. And you guess they’re not actually hard to make? Good for you, you suppose.

About an hour later you’re all full and whatnot, and Borislav’s gearing up in his park ranger stuff to go do park ranger stuff.

You grab your backpack and head out with him. He stops to watch Ranthix as he takes a bite out of some unidentifiable part of deer.

Borya eyes the huge, smoldering pile of embers in the fire pit . “Before you leave, clean up after self!” he shouts angrily. Though you notice a twinkle in his eye that shows he’s not actually mad.
>>
>>33709965

“I WILL DO AS I SEE FIT, WIZARD,” Ranthix yells back, taking another huge bite of meat from what you’ve now figured out is a leg, and then continues speaking, spitting flecks of meat spitting out of his mouth as he goes. “DON’T YOU HAVE ENORMOUS RED TREES TO WATCH? THEY’RE NOT GOING TO WATCH THEMSELVES NOW, ARE THEY?”

Borislav laughs, and pulls out the keys to his truck. “Trees are good watchers,” he says, effecting a wise tone.

“BEGONE!” Ranthix demands.

>Yeah, you heard him, begone, Borya!
>Watch what you say, or the trees will watch you say it for you!
>BE FRIENDS ALREADY.
>You two can kill each other if you want, but give me your keys first so I can at least get home.

“Ranthix, this guy just made you sandwiches,” you say, trying to reason with him. “Give respect where respect is due.”

Ranthix scowls back at you. “HE ORDERED ME TO DO SOMETHING, SO I CAN ORDER HIM TO DO SOMETHING ELSE. THAT IS WHAT RESPECT MEANS, SPAWNLING.”

“Respect mean you respect me,” says Borislav, laughing again and walking off to his truck.

You lean against a nearby tree and rub your forehead. “You’re not helping, Borya.”

Borislav smiles broadly back at you as he unlocks his truck. “No more fire in my forest, okay? Okay, goodbye, my dyavolskii friends,” he says with a wave.

Simmering heat wafts off of Ranthix’s exposed skin, and the meat in his claws begins to sizzle. “WHAT WAS THAT? YOUR BIG GREEN PLANTS DON’T LIKE FIRE? TREAD LIGHTLY, SHAPESHIFTER, OR EVERYTHING YOU LOVE COULD WIND UP AS ASHES IN THE WIND.”

You leave your tree to stand somewhat between Ranthix and Borislav. “You can yell at Borya later,” you tell the demon. “And this is my forest, so like, no threatening that.”

“THE THREAT WAS A RHETORICAL ONE, SPAWNLING. DO THEY NOT TEACH THE ART OF DEBATE IN YOUR AMERICAN ACADEMIES?”

You put your hands in your pockets. “Not quite like that?” you say.

Borislav drievs by in his truck, waving at you. You wave back, and he drives down the road and out of sight.

“Anyway,” you say, “you ready to go or you need time to digest the whole deer you just ate?”
>>
>>33710887

“I BARELY ATE LESS THAN A FIFTH OF IT AT MOST,” says Ranthix, looking down at the charred piece of flesh at his feet. “AT LEAST COUNTING THE PARTS GOOD FOR EATING.”

“What?” you ask. “Wait, never mind. I was joking. You ready to go?”

“YES,” Ranthix says, standing up to his full height and stretching. “AFTER ONE MOMENT. I MUST DEAL WITH THE REMAINS.”

A couple minutes later, Ranthix has finished stashing the meat parts of the deer in a cooler in the back of his hummer, which you suspect he keeps there for that specific purpose. The rest he buries, using the shovel kept by the fire pit.

A few minutes you’re on the dirt road, driving back toward a real road. Ranthix has enacted his glamor in order to avoid undo attention for being a demon. His illusion cover is that of a huge, military-ish looking guy maybe in his forties, with buzz cut gray hair. His near permanent expression of seething hatred of everything remains fixed on his face, unchanged. He looks almost as tough as he did in demon form, except for the important lack of armored plates and horns.

Really? I'd say it would be Greed most likely. The word Stygian most likely refers to The river Stix and the realm of Hades. Hade's, besides being god of the dead and the underworld, was also the god of wealth, as his realm contained precious minerals and Jewels.

If the realm of Stygia could have access to incredible and decadent BLT sandwiches, it's most likely they could pay a premium for it.

Verwelkens maybe? All consuming darkness sounds like them.

Though you could probably swap Stygians, Verwelken, and Tataran around and have it still work.

I've been wanting to say that Verwelkens are Pride because they seem to be the least human of all the demons and almost a direct opposite to angels. There's also the thing where in hybrids, the Verwelken part usually refuses to participate. I'm kinda picturing it as a "I refuse to associate with these lesser demons. We do things my way or I leave and take my stuff with me." type thing.

Reeber runs amock in the back, trying to get into Ranthix’s deer meet storage.

“Cut it out, Reeber,” you call back.

Your hound falls to its side, as if struck dead. Whatever, dogs.

You drive on for a while in silence. Eventually though, looking over at the huge demon beside you carefully disguised as a human, curiosity drags at your mind, and you are unable to remain silent, namely about that one time you killed the person Ranthix was supposed to protect. “So,” you venture, “did you know Cordeliate very well? I mean, I kind of got a glimpse of her being a colossal bitch, but I don’t know, maybe she was under duress at the time.”

“HA, NOW THERE’S A DEMONESS THAT KNEW HOW TO HAVE A GOOD TIME,” Ranthix says, smiling broadly. The smoky anger breaking off of him silences momentarily, its place taken by a warm, fuzzy feeling. You begin to feel kind of guilty. “GOOD TIMES, SPAWNLING. GOOD TIMES. HAVE YOU EVER HAD A NIGHT WHERE YOU THREW INHIBITION TO THE HOUNDS AND LIVED LIFE WITHOUT CONSEQUENCES?” he asks.

You recount your life up to this point. “Uh… no?” you say. Man, that makes you sound boring.

“GOOD. NEVER DO THAT,” Ranthix advises you. “THAT’S WHO CORDELIATE WAS. HER INCAUTION LEAD TO HER BE HERE, AND THEN IT LEAD HER TO DIE AT YOUR CLAW. AN ANIMAL OF PASSION AND CRAVING FOR NEW SENSATION, WHEN WITH HER TALENTS SHE COULD HAVE HAD LIFE AND INFLUENCE IN THE REALMS OF BELEROTH. INDEED, SHE WAS THE EMBODIMENT OF FOLLY,” he says.
>>
>>33712073

Your guilt vanishes before it begins to bother you.

“BUT IN THE THOUSAND HELLS,” he continues, “THERE ARE BUT A THOUSAND WHO WOULD REFUSE THE DISTINCTION OF BEING THE RISING IMPERIATE’S THIRD SLAIN FOE! SURELY YOU DID HER GREAT JUSTICE IN CLAIMING HER BLADE AS YOUR OWN.”

“Oh. Thanks, I guess?” you say. “But all that stuff you said about hell. I don’t know, I guess I’ve never been there. What’s all that business even like, anyway?”

“IT WAS ONCE A WORLD OF GLORY AND ORDER, WHERE THERE WAS NO QUESTION OF WHERE ULTIMATE AUTHORITY LIED,” Ranthix says. “A MAN COULD WAGE A GOOD WAR WITHOUT FEAR OF INTERCESSION. AND NOW IT IS A FRACTURED PLAIN OF BICKERING NATION STATES, MANIPULATED FROM ALL SIDES BY THOSE OF WITHOUT THE RESOLVE TO LEAD. NATURAL CHAOS IS SUPPRESSED, WHILE PSEUDO-CHAOS IS CHAMPIONED AS THE NEW ORDER,” he says, scowling. “TERRIBLE! ONLY THE GREATER REALMS KNOW THE VICTORY OF UNITY, AND EVEN THEY FEAR TO ACT AND FORGE THEIR OWN DESTINY. IT IS AN UNENDING TYRANNY OF SPINELESSNESS!”

"Is it like they're all fighting still, but they're doing it wrong?

>Mentally sort out the chaos-authority-order koan that he just spouted.
>So... nobody's strong, smart, or ballsy enough to take over hell?
>How is it, like, arranged? You said it's a 'plain' but I've been reading Dante's Inferno(sort of) and it talks about how there are levels and stuff. I've seen enough shit that I'm not going to throw anything out just because it appears in fiction.
>So, what, did that make my mom the Devil or something?
>>
“So how do the Thultal factor into all that deal?” you ask, trying to wrap your mind around what he’s saying.

“NOT REALLY AT ALL,” says Ranthix. “I AM TO SERVE ONE CAUSE AND ONE CAUSE ALONE, AND DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY CAUSES ARE IN HALTH, RIGHT NOW? HUNDREDS! THOUSANDS! TENS OF THOUSANDS!” he laments. “AND EVEN IF YOU CHAMPION ONE, IT CHANGES INTO SOMETHING HORRIFYING, AND EVEN IF YOU CHAMPION ONE THAT DOESN’T CHANGE, IT’S DIFFERENT IN DIFFERENT LANDS, AND IS DOOMED TO DIE IN FRAGMENTATION,” he explains, disgust, despair, and seething fury radiating from him. “PERPETUITY IS GONE. ETHOS DANCES AT THE BECK AND CALL OF TREASONOUS RATS AND PERISHES DESPOILED IN THE GUTTER.”

“Wait wait, I think I got some of it,” you say. “So basically, there’s nothing holding everything together. Like. It’s all just… coming apart at the seams. And I’m going to take a guess and say maybe that thing that used to hold everything together was my mom,” you finish, still unsure. “But how’s having some one big cause make a difference if everything’s supposed to be anarchy and chaos anyway?”
>>
>>33713026
“RAAGHH,” Ranthix says, clearly frustrated with your lack of comprehension. “CHAOS DOESN’T ENFORCE ITSELF! THE NATURAL STATE OF ALL THINGS IN HALTH IS A PERFECT DISHARMONY OF WILL, AND THE ONLY CERTAIN WAY TO ENSURE A CONCORD OF DISCHORD IS FOR EVERYTHING TO BEND TO THE INFALLIBILITY OF ONE BEING: YOU!”

>Aggh! That doesn’t even make sense!

Here's something we can try. You know how our Belphegoran powers are basically balling up emotions then shoving them into people and stuff?

Why can't we try that with positive emotions like happiness or lust

Because this isn't called Succubusborn Quest. Taking that thought to its conclusion, I'm more than ok with Sierra not having a romantic subplot, especially one that would involve notrape spells.

Aren't Belphegorans basically succubi/incubi?

I just want to know if shoving emotionballs into stuff also works with positive emotions.

I mean it seems like such an obvious thing that should have been tried by now.

The Forced Romantic Subplot has been the downfall of many a modern story.

You hold the sides of your head. You want to scream at something, but you refrain. At least for a second. “Aggh!” you shout. “But I’m not infallible! I’m not a hundred years old or like, a genius, or even that great a person - I make stupid decisions all the time! I make mistakes and do things I know are dumb, just because I feel like it!”

“HA HA, EXACTLY,” says Ranthix, smiling broadly and wagging a claw at you. “NOW YOU BEGIN TO REACH THE FOOT OF UNDERSTANDING, SPAWNLING!”

The comment is so ridiculous that it makes you forget to freak out. You take a few minutes to process this information as Ranthix drives. The demon smiles broadly as he goes. You’ve hit a real road at some point, and the tires don’t grate as loudly on the pavement as they did before on dirt.

“You know, this is kind of a different lecture about government than what I’ve been getting in Civics,” you say, feeling an odd sense of calm.

“YES, WHAT IS THE WAY OF HALTH IS NOT THE WAY OF THE VARIED WORLDS,” Ranthix answers.

“So in the end,” you say, thinking it through as you say it, “you’re saying that I need to be the ruler of hell… because hell needs to be ruled by me.”

“AN APT LEARNER. SAY SOMETHING ELSE THAT EXCEEDS YOUR YEARS IN WISDOM, SPAWNLING.”

You try to figure it out. If hell is supposed to have one absolute, arbitrary ruler, then wouldn’t that mean...? You frown, and look over at Ranthix. “Was my mom the Devil?” you ask him.
>>
>>33714366

“WHAT? NO, SHE WAS THE IMPERIATE. TERRAN RELIGIONS HAVE NO SWAY HERE!” he says. “ALTHOUGH, SOME MAY HAVE CONFUSED HER FOR THEIR DEVIL, I SUPPOSE, BUT SHE WAS ALWAYS CHTHONIA’S BRILLIANT EMPRESS AND GEM OF ALL THINGS.”

Okay, maybe that was a silly question. “So the Thultal,” you say, “ that is, you and your guys. Do all of them do the whole there must be an Imperiate thing?”

“THAT IS WHAT THULTAL MEANS,” says Ranthix. “THEM THAT BOW. THOSE THAT BOW BEFORE THE ORIGINAL MANDATE OF IMPERIATE!”

That idea strikes you as off, for some reason. “But people said my mom ruled for like, centuries,” you say. “That implies she wasn’t always ruling. What was going on before there was an Imperiate?”
>>
>>33714392

“THERE IS ALWAYS AN IMPERIATE,” says Ranthix. “YOUR MOTHER BECAME IMPERIATE WHEN SHE SEIZED THE MANTLE FROM THE PREVIOUS ONE. THAT IS THE WAY. AN ENDLESS LINE OF UNBROKEN DOMINANCE.”

“But everything’s falling apart now,” you say, looking questioningly at the demon. “If all this stuff about concords of discords or whatever is how it works, why is it my mom’s death screwed everything up?”

Ranthix keeps his eyes on the road, a worried kind of frantic look on his face. “I DO NOT KNOW. IT WAS NOT HER TIME TO DIE,” he says. “SHE WAS AMONG THE STRONGEST IMPERIATES HALTH HAS EVER KNOWN. SHE COULD NOT BE KILLED – SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN KILLED,” he continues, almost despairing. “AND THE CURRENT STATE OF MUDDLED COWARDICE IS AS INEXPLICABLE AS IT IS HERETICAL. IT HAS NEVER BEEN THUS, NOR WILL IT EVER BE AGAIN, ONCE YOU ARE ABLE TO TAKE YOUR LAWFUL PLACE ON THE CHTHONIAN THRONE, WHICH THE IMPERIATE HAS LEFT VACANT FOR YOU, HER SAKHERITH.”

>Does my name being Sakheris have some kind of meaning to it in the whole Imperiate context?
>Well, not saying that’s not going to happen, but that’s probably not going to happen for a long time if it happens at all.

>This might be another stupid question, but what happens if I die? It sounds like I'm a lot further than just a few sparring sessions away from being anywhere close to as strong as my mother? And won't it be harder to gather up a bunch of idiots with their claws out than it usually is to succeed an ancient emperess-imperiate-whatever-person? >>
>>33714392
We should ask Waldo, and magistrate about current political situation.
IF we don't know about it, and its keeping us from getting more power, we should learn about it.
>>
“Does my name being Sakheris have some kind of meaning to it in this whole Imperiate context?” you ask.

“YES AND NO,” Ranthix answers. “YOUR NAME IMPLIES THAT YOU ARE HER HEART, HER CORE ESSENCE. HER GIVING YOU SUCH A NAME SAYS THAT SO LONG AS YOU LIVE, SO DOES SHE, WITH YOU. OF COURSE, YOU WOULD STILL BE HER HEIR, NAME OR NOT, BUT THE NAME WITH WHICH SHE NAMED YOU CARRIES WITH IT GREAT POWER.”

But the thing is you’re not the only one she gave a name to. “Actually,” you say, “there’s something else. Or… was, anyway. I had a twin sister. Mom called her Nydalis. She’s, you know, kind of dead now. But would that have changed anything if she wasn’t?”

Ranthix considers this for a moment. “SOMEWHAT. IF SHE OPPOSED YOUR RULE, THEN YOU WOULD BE OBLIGATED TO KILL HER, I SUPPOSE. OTHERWISE, WERE YOU IDENTICAL IN EVERY WAY?”

“Well, yeah. Identical twins I guess.”

“HAH. SAKHERIS AND NYDALIS. MATCHING NAMES, CLEVER. WELL IN THAT CASE, YOU COULD HAVE BOTH BEEN THE IMPERIATE.”

“Like. Two Imperiates?”

“NO. BOTH OF YOU WOULD BE THE ONE, SINGULAR IMPERIATE. IT HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE, THERE ARE MANY TOMES WRITTEN ON THE TOPIC. IT’S A DEEP SUBJECT.”

You roll your eyes. “I’m picking up that vibe,” you say. “Next question, what’s the difference between Halth and Chthonia? Cause I’ve heard both kind of thrown around willy nilly,” you say.
>>
>>33715242

“CHTHONIA WAS A NATION THE IMPERIATE CLAWED OUT OF THE HEART OF HALTH, FOR HER OWN DEVICES, LONG BEFORE SHE OUTMATCHED THE LAST IMPERIATE. IT WAS THE PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF HER WILL IN KINGDOM FORM,” he says, “AND THOUGH FEW ACKNOWLEDGE THE IMPERIATE’S PRIMACY BEYOND THE THULTAL, THERE ARE MANY THAT RESPECT HER ROLE AS QUEEN OF CHTHONIA, AND WILL FLOCK TO YOUR BANNER ONCE IT IS RAISED.”

There’s one kind of problem to this whole being the one hope of Hell or whatever, though. “What if I die?” you ask. “I’ve almost been done in like, five, ten times now. And yeah, I’m pretty tough, but somebody like you could flatten me in a heartbeat. I’m nowhere near as badass as my mom was.”

“THAT’S FINE,” says Ranthix. “YOU WILL LEARN.”

“But what if I get killed?” you ask. “What happens to all this Imperiate stuff?”

“YOU CAN NEVER DIE,” Ranthix answers you.

“Like. I’m not allowed to, or like I literally can’t?”

“YOU ARE THE IMPERIATE, BUT YOU ARE NOT ON YOUR THRONE. YOU CANNOT DIE. YOU ARE NOT NEAR IN ANY WAY TO A POSITION IN WHICH YOU COULD DIE,” says Ranthix.

>So. Just like my mom, right?

Being on the Conclave is the smart move, and we let Ranthix know that we are doing it to stay out of the limelight. His strength will let us be the power behind the throne, and Waldric can be our assassin's target. Waldric doesn't get to make shit fuck all decisions without us since we pick his other "advisors", Ranthrix leads the armies to prevent him from building a power base there, and we can always call on the Hallows to wipe him out if he tries to seek allies outside the Conclave.

Just like your mom, you think to yourself. “I think I’ll play it safe either way,” you say.

“GOOD. YOU DO THAT,” says Ranthix.

“So, there anybody I got to watch out for? You know, like people my mom pissed off and stuff?”

“I CANNOT SAY. ALL WERE CAREFUL TO SPEAK PLEASINGLY TO HER IN LIFE, AT LEAST PUBLICLY. AS FOR FRIENDS, MECKOR SHOULD HAVE BEEN YOUR GREATEST ALLY, AND YET EVEN HE COULD NOT BE TRUSTED,” says Ranthix. “IF THULTAL LEARN OF YOU, PERHAPS THEY WILL BE CONVINCED, BUT MANY THERE ARE THAT HAVE GIVEN UP AND FORSWORN CORITHIS IN ORDER TO GIVE ALLEGENCE TO OTHER, FALSE IMPERATES, AND THEY ARE JUST AS LIKELY TO SEEK YOUR DEATH.”

“I guess in that case I really do just need to get way strong,” you say. “I mean, doesn’t that make my position better looking? Thultal and everybody sees some unkillable badass strutting around, that’ll raise red flags that I’m actually the unkillable badass Imperiate queen lady, and they’ll just bow down before me, right?”

“A BETTER WAY OF LOOKING AT THINGS,” Ranthix says. “AND THE BETTER YOU LOOK AT THINGS THE BETTER IT GETS LOOKING AT THEM.”

You don’t know where that line of thought is supposed go, so you bring up your idea with just getting super badass again. “So what should I do from here? Like, just train? Get huge? Learn magic? I mean, Moriah probably knows magic. Maybe I can learn magic. Or should I just like, get all martial artsy with my claws and stuff?” Then you think again. “Or do I just go around picking up landwells? I only got the one so far, but that did a lot when I claimed it, and the only real hard part about that was just figuring out where it was. And don’t just tell me to do everything, because geeze.”

“IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOU’VE THOUGHT THIS THROUGH,” says Ranthix. “YOU MUST HAVE YOUR NOTIONS. AND WHO AM I TO QUESTION THE WILL OF THE IMPERIATE?”

You scrunch up your nose at him, then punch him in as hard as you can, right in the arm. The attack is utterly ineffective. In fact, you probably hurt yourself more than you hurt him. Ranthix laughs heartily to himself.
>>
>>33716347

“Shut up,” you say, trying not to smile. Stupid Ranthixes and their stupid immunity to physical violence. You’re pretty lucky this guy’s on your side. With all the other crap that’s gone down, he’s probably the only one that supports you one hundred percent. “You know, by the way, thanks for having faith in me,” you say, trying to sound like you mean it, because you kind of do. “I mean, your other guys seemed kind of convinced Meckor could do big things. And Meckor was doing big things, actually, as far as all this king of hell stuff is concerned.” You speak quieter than you mean to. “Even if you’re Thultal or whatever, you didn’t have to ditch them for me if you didn’t want to.”

Ranthix says nothing for a moment, then glances over at you. When he speaks, he does so with a deep kind of reverence in his booming voice. “WHAT I WANT AND WHAT I BELIEVE ARE THE SAME THING, SPAWNLING,” he tells you. “I DO NOT QUESTION YOU, SO DO NOT QUESTION ME. AND MORE IMPORTANTLY,” he adds, “DO NOT QUESTION YOURSELF.”

You smirk and lean your head against the window. “Wisdom,” you say.

T-thanks Languid

Since this thread will probably still be up by then, and probably not even in autosage (unless people decided to get into a "you're idiots for fief!!!" argument), will you continue here?

>Thread in seven hours
Geez Languid, you're a fucking machine.

Ok well Waldric isn't going to pull some halfassed betrayal, you are forgetting he isn't a combat specialist, he preys on emotional weakness and the MC is not emotionally stable at all remember what languid said about the suicide risk.

He considers Sierra to be mentally unstable (which she is), his first thought when she showed up at the crowbar's place was that she was blackmailing him.

It isn't long until he decides we are a threat to him and he will move against us.

Giving him the fief give him the ability to execute order 66, where if someone else had the fief (lets say Ranthix or Sierra) he would have to ask permission to execute order 66 and we could just say no rather then reenact the first 3 star wars movies hellborn edition.

He can easily bug out to safety from the hollows or any other threat because now he has power and authority. If he does betray us it will hit us harder then it hit Melkor and we are less prepared to take it.

This idea has bad end written on every atom of it.

Just figured I'd post this here as well.
>>
>>33716857
>Guy says Waldric is unlikely to betray because it doesn't help him
>You laugh at it
>He asks if you care to show why he's wrong
>Your answer is "Because he's going to betray us"
Come on, dude. I want the fief, but you're just making our side look like crazy assholes now...
>>
>>33716940
probably an infiltrator from the other side!
>>
>>33716940
I want the fief too. Where were you guys last vote? Different time zones?

Also, anyone notice there were way more votes than usual when voting? It looked a lot like samefagging.
>>
>>33716940

I'm the guy that he was responding to.

I would actually add that it actively hurts Wally to go after Sierra. Wally has a chance to cement his control over San Francisco by getting the most powerful players on his side. (Issac/Sheriff, Ranthix, Magistrate, and even Sierra). It deters any potential betrayals from other members of his conclave or outside demons.

He just has to play the political game and keep everyone happy by keeping them on his conclave, which he already offered to do.

So why in the world would he go full retard and put out a hit on Sierra? He would simultaneously lose 4 allies and make enemies of them. He would likely lose his girlfriend. And for what exactly?
>>
>>33717043
I slept in cause I was sick.
>>
>>33717051
Go away Ned Stark, the dead shouldn't talk.
>>
>>33717051
I doubt that he would do something as overt as putting a hit out on us. I do think he will try to weaken our position while strengthening his, and maybe look for contacts outside of the fief to do it.

Also there's the matter of whether he'll step down when we want to take it.
>>
>>33717043
I don't vote for most things if I don't have a writein in mind because people always either just pick every single option, or they pick something close enough to what I'd have picked, or it doesn't look like a vote where I particularly care which way it goes.
>>
>>33717043
I was late to the thread, unfortunately.
>>
>>33717083

I don't think he would look for contacts outside the fief to do it. Too risky. If it gets traced back to him, he's fucked.

Marginalized our political position? I can see why he'd want to do it. But then again, Sierra is basically retarded at politics and don't really give a shit. The Magistrate is a much bigger threat politically.

And will we want to take it? If Wally is doing a good job and keeping everything stable, what's the motivation for Sierra to take it?
>>
>>33717122
>If

Why do you ask questions you answered?
>>
>>33717083
>Also there's the matter of whether he'll step down when we want to take it.
Would we want to? It seems like people have this goal of re-unifying Halth, so it's not like we'd be managing SF directly anyway. It would be handed off to someone else, so why not Wally if he hasn't cocked things up completely by then?
>>
>>33717122
>I don't think he would look for contacts outside the fief to do it. Too risky. If it gets traced back to him, he's fucked.
Why is it risky? Who's going to be spying on him 24/7 to make sure he never talks to any of the Imperiates?

>Sierra is basically retarded at politics and don't really give a shit.
So should she keep not giving a shit until all Wally has a sizably force and/or allies to back him up while she's fucking around?

>And will we want to take it? If Wally is doing a good job and keeping everything stable, what's the motivation for Sierra to take it?
It would mean we have an area loyal to us to build up our power, rather than an area with a magistrate of dubious loyalty. Basically I'd rather the place that is our stepping stone to more territory is ours, rather than Wally's.
>>
Totally finished guys.
>>
>>33717254
you forgot the names of three earths that flash godron dude gave us
>>
I don't think Waldric is sitting around rubbing his hands together while hunched over, plotting about how to fuck us over for more power, but I do think that the second his life or position is put in jeopardy and he has the chance to sell us down the river to save his skin, he's gonna do it. He'd probably love to keep us around and have his claim to SF be Officially Imperiate Sponsored or something, but he'd totally go for short term survival over long term optimization if he gets some pressure put on him.
>>
>>33717254
>No angel information

Why does everyone ignore me when I ask for angel information? We don't even know the names of all of them.
>>
>>33717228

What if his assassin or contact gets captured and spills the bean for he/she dies? There's an inherent risk in trying to arrange for a contract killer. Things might get leaked somehow. So Wally better have returns that justify taking a risk like that.

I don't see what those returns are and no one has made an argument outside of we are a threat.

And for me, this whole discussion goes back to my original point. What exactly is Wally's reason for rubbing Sierra out? And does it justify taking the risk in trying to kill Sierra? It seems fairly clear to me that Team Sierra offers more reward for Wally in terms of legitimacy and power backing.
>>
>>33717254
The blood drinking thing was actually infernus, not belphegoran. I know there was that thing about belph=vampires, but that was about the mind fuckery powers, not the blood.
>>
>>33717303
Like I said, I don't think he would assassinate or put a hit out on Sierra. I do think he would ally himself with someone stronger so he doesn't have to take shit from a demonbane or worry about being knocked off at the whims of a teenage hellborn.
>>
>>33717254
>Maybe add a section for the deceased?
>You didn't mention that Infernus skin is like armor. Also Isaac described them as "like the classic demons you'd see on tv or in a movie", which might be worth mentioning.
>We know belphegorans have small horns.
>Stygian are very large physically unless Tweedy was lying to try to intimidate
>Tartarans "interact with reality differently from others".
>We know that one of the angel types is "Seraph". They get stronger the more they fight and that's what the Hallows are.
>There are more planes of existence than Halth that we know about. Heaven has some weird name. You could find it in the archives. It's where he was talking about where his crossbow was made. There's also the other earths.
>Democondas was never said in-quest. It was always "Condapedes"
>>
>>33717254
>>33717376
>There's no section on Landmasters/landwells though it's understandable. We don't really know much
>Druids put under the "other types" category when they're just a type of wizard or something here.
There should probably be a category for types of magic, since so far we've seen druidry and fortumomancy or whatever it was that the flag guy used. There's sure to be more.
>>
I wonder if any of there will eventually be an {IN} power available that has "Immolation" in its name. I like that word.

I remember there being a mention that the demons themselves get a title of sorts and fly into Bloodrage (a name that I forgot too, thank you), and that it's a double edged sword since you care little for friend or foe.

not to myself.

>>33717346
That's why we actually USE our allies. Delegation fucks over rulers. That's why we have Wally have the title, but Ranthrix (our uber-loyal mensch) controls the armed forces. Mr. Magistrate deals with negotiations and politics. All Wally does is put his seal on shit. Look up "Japan" and see how they dealt with the Emperor during the Shogunate eras.
>>
>>33718127

As you drive over the Golden Gate Bridge, Ranthix turns to you. “SO SPAWNLING, WHERE AM I TAKING YOU ANYAWY?”

You idly watch the Pacific Ocean stretch out below you, seeming to meet up with the sky a million miles from where you are. A huge cargo ship passes by under the bridge as you drive over it, giving you an interesting view of the containers stacked up on its deck. You look forward and see San Fransisco loom before you. Where are you going?
