Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you reached the city and booked a hotel.

You pick up the meat-stuffed wrap and take as big a bite as you can manage without choking. It taste of home, of El-Amin. Of days spent ducking your master's incessant trials and days spent tormenting the guards with your friends. It taste of... something acrid and bitter. The after taste, gods above it's horrible! How can people actually eat this? You glance around at your companions to see them wearing similar expressions of disgust, all save Skull Kid who's devouring a fat, greasy slab of meat stuffed between two halves of a loaf of bread with various vegetables and sauces.

“How can you call this food? It taste like the sewage below smelled!” Darzi exclaims, having taken a bite out of her own kebab. Skull Kid swallows his mouthful of 'synth' before responding. “Well, that's no coincidence. The vast majority of food outside of the Tower is synthetic. Just a slurry of chemicals intended to simulate real food. The poms are real though.” As if for emphasis he picks up one of the fried potato strings and pops it in his mouth. “After a while you won't even notice the aftertaste anymore, trust me.”

You force down a few more bites of your doner kebab but the more you eat the more you feel like you're going to vomit. You decide to simply relegate yourself to your glass of fairly crappy wine and your pommes frites, the only thing on the table that actually taste good. You decide to make conversation to distract yourself from your roiling stomach. “So, I at least need new clothes. Where might we find a marketplace?” You look to Skull Kid when you ask this, and he wipes his mouth on his sleeve before shrugging. “There are shops all over this part of town, just gotta keep your eye out. They're kind of overpriced though. I'd say we ought to head to the Green District but they check ID at every gate.”
(1/2 or 3)
>>
You quirk up an eyebrow. “ID? Does that stand for something?” Skull Kid nods. “Yeah, every citizen of the City is implanted with an ID chip at birth, or whenever they immigrate. I used to have one but I pried that shit out of my arm as soon as I was banished. Anyway, if we want to get anywhere in this city we need ID chips.” You snap your fingers. “Oh! That reminds me-” You reach into your cloak and withdraw a stack of AWU chits. “-You can hack these, right?” He nods, taking the stack of five chits from you and laying them out on the squat table in front of you in two neat rows. “Yeah, no problem. I got a program that'll crack these in a few minutes.”

As he says this he reaches behind his back and grabs hold of one of those long cables that serve as his 'hair'. He stabs the spike at the end into a port on one of the chits and the chit springs to life, showing a password screen. Characters rapidly flash in and out of the password field, faster than you can follow. “It's just a simple brute force hack but it'll get the job done. Anyway, like I was saying. There's shops all over for all sorts of shit. Clothes mostly, but appliances, furniture, electronics. You can find it all here. Except weapons. The Red District is probably your best bet for weapons dealers, ever since the possession of guns by the citizenry was made illegal.”
(2/3)
>>
You contemplatively chew one of those delightful little fried potato strings, he's given you quite a bit to think about. Unfortunately there are other matters to attend to. “Fulvia-” You turn your attention towards her, she still hasn't put her projection back up. “-how long until you think your spell is ready?” She cocks her head to the side, considering for a moment. “At the current rate I am gathering vys, It will be two days before I am ready to cast.” You nod your head slowly, thinking. You hope to be out of this dimension in two days time, so that works out well enough. You can only hope this device Skull Kid told you about both exist and actually works.

Oh hey that reminds me, didn't we get an insight into Earth magic at some point? Because our character sheet says we didn't and my memory's a little hazy since I think it was a while ago.
>>
>>33825824
I don't believe so. I know you got to novice rank in Earth magic but I don't think you got an insight after that.
>>
>>33825819
dragon daughteru tiem
This will be 2/3 insight if we succeed, we can get the last at the Surya temple back home, which will probably have loot and a modifier.
>>
>>33825773
>>33825759
We should honestly do it now not suddenly at the last second. He should be given time to decide.

This is as good as it'll ever get.
>>
>>33825917
I know, but everyone was referring to it as our daughteru last thread, I thought we might as well keep it consistent.
>>
>>33825913
why is a master in Water concerned about cloths? Are you telling me it's that hard to wash them? I don't even think we should go out to buy clothing, it's probably expensive as fuck and we're going to need this room for atleast another day if we don't want to switch to a different hotel.
>>
So what do we medite on?
I like to get leaping done.
>>
>>33826537
Speed is more useful.
>>
>>33826537
I don't know how hard that metamagic is, but I think that one of the effects from the five effects book might be easier and more useful. I was thinking speed.
>>
>>33826563
leaping is cheaper and pays for itself in group battles.
Also what does speed do again?
>>
>>33826602
Makes all spells more powerful.
>>
>>33826602
Speed is like casting haste. I just remember effects being easier to learn than metamagic and that Blast was a bitch to learn.
>>
>>33826644
we should get both, if we can than.
>>
Speed seems to be the consensus, let's focus on that and after meditate on Leaping.

AoE is dangerous without selective though, depending on how it works
>>

I'm for speed that. Dragon training till we get to the water temple
>>
>>33826762
They cost the same and AoE can be combine with Selective to hit only certain targets.
>>
>>33826818
Let's stop on the way there at the Surya temple, then. We still hadn't looted it after all, and it'd be a nice way to start relaxing after all these near-death-experiences.
>>
>>33826897
the temple would be on the oposite direction of the "gin 'n juice" temple.
>>
>>33826897
Forgot something in this. I was thinking, maybe we should sleep at least once more while we're here? I remember that disembodied face appeared when we passed out from lizardbro's breath, maybe we could get some more ominous advice before we leave.
>>
You turn your attention once more to Skull Kid. “Is there any way to get fake IDs? What about sneaking into the other districts, or bribing the guards or something?” Skull Kid shrugs his shoulders. “There are a few people out there who will implant fake chips. Hard to find, because it's not like they advertise or anything. Gotta know a guy who knows a guy.” Skull Kid grins, an eerie expression considering his lack of eyes. “Lucky for you, I know a guy and you know me. I haven't seen him since I was kicked out of town though, so it might take some legwork to find the bastard.”

He waves a hand dismissively, moving on to your other questions. “Anyway, bribery is right out. Not that the feds aren't corrupt as hell, it's just they're paid a good salary. It's expensive to bribe 'em, you know?” He pauses to take a bite of his sandwich, chewing slowly while he thinks. Eventually he resumes his little speech. “Sneaking in might work. We could probably find a way past the walls through the sewer system, or we might be able to find a maintenance entrance and slip through that way.” He shrugs. “We'd need to check out the wall to be certain.”

You sigh, this just seems like it's going to be a whole ordeal. You're distracted from your own thoughts by a soft ping. Skull Kid unplugs the cord attached to the first chit and shoves it into the next one. “Alright, I'll take a ten percent fee for my services and then transfer you the rest, yeah?” Before you have a chance to respond Skull Kid's own chit pings cheerily and you reach into your cloak to retrieve your own, seeing a notification on the screen.
>New Balance: 1739 AWU
(1/3)
>>
You smile, tucking the chit back into your cloak. Nothing like money to raise your spirits. You risk another bite of kebab and force it down before asking. “So, how goes your training?” Profectus shrugs. “I haven't had much opportunity to meditate, not since the night in Skull Kid's hovel at least. I've sort of been avoiding using my arm since the area is so magically inert. The last thing I want is to be left drained on some foreign world.” Chryssa nods her head. “I have similar concerns. I did meditate briefly upon Earth magic on the night we spent in the tunnel, but I failed to gain any sort of insight.” That's a shame.

Darzi speaks up as you force down a few more bites of kebab. “I think now seems as good a time as any to discuss what happened in the bar, with Lucky and Pipsqueak.” You sigh. “Do we have to do this now? I'd rather shower first, at least. I smell like crap in a very literal sense.” Profectus nods his head. “I'll second that motion. Save it for after we've bathed.” Darzi relents. “Very well, but do not think to duck out of this conversation. What we did was despicable and I'll not have it happen again.” You wave a hand dismissively, though you're inclined to agree. You'd rather avoid ever setting a bar alight and taking hostages again.

You leave the table and retreat to the solitude of the bathroom. You're confused when you see not a large pool in the center of the floor, but a strange glass box and a person-sized bowl adjacent. Both of which seem entirely too small for you, the glass box would leave you barely any room to move around and the bowl would practically force you to curl up in the fetal position to fit inside. In the end you opt for the glass box, stripping down and tossing your clothing into the bowl. Perhaps it's intended as a washing basin? That would make sense.

>>33826982
It's probably one of the magi.
If rather not mess with him.
I mean it's going after him that caused us to get stuck in this dimension.
>>
Would it be possible that you post the world map Soma?
>>
It takes you an inordinate amount of time to figure out the various buttons and dials that control the water flow and its temperature. Eventually you figure it out through trial and error, but then you're faced with trying to understand the bottles lined up on a shelf for your convenience. You end up guessing, and step out smelling vaguely of lavender. Once clean you take a few moments to wash the filth out of your clothing in the large basin adjacent the glass box. It leaves a thick film of scum on the bottom of the basin but it's not your problem.

Redressed, you take a moment to collect yourself before rejoining your companions. How are you going to approach the coming conversation? It will probably just be the five of them scolding you for being too reckless...

I think it's been more or less stated that Lucky has a past and isn't exactly the most morally compunctious individual. That said, he does think the entire situation was pulled off poorly and reeked of amateurish panic.
I did not.
>>33827477
Yeah we screwed up, but not as bad as some people make it out to be.
>>
>>33827511
I mean, ok even if that's true, you do realize what we did, right?
We tried to threaten someone into leading us to a danherous place for free, set a bar on fire, killed those who attacked us for destroying their property/endanger them, took the ones we threatened hostage, and mangled the hand of someone who attacked us in self-defense when we held a pistol to her head.
It was also stated IIRC that Mik feels pretty shitty about it.
>>
>>33827710
Still the best bartering method out there.
>>
>>33827710
And just for the record, I didn't have problems with threatening Lucky, but would've choosing something less dangerous and less likely to expose us as a "warlock"
I still don't understand why people refuse to follow SK's advice to not say we're magic, instead showing off on every occasion.
>>
>>33827762

You see, and this is why we can't have nice things.
>>
>>33827796
Because magic is fun to use.
>>
>>33827710
>I mean, ok even if that's true, you do realize what we did, right?
Yeah, i do and we did it before, it just means that we should have better control of our magic before trying to threaten with fire.
>We tried to threaten someone into leading us to a dangerous place for free
We always try to weasle out of it, and he implied that he knew a way with out being dangerous, which makes me beleive that there are unknown short cuts, but atleast we got to the city at the very least.
>set a bar on fire
Actually no, we stopped the fire, if we didn't it would have been fatal for most of our group.
>killed those who attacked us for destroying their property/endanger them
We were protecting our selves, plus you have to remember these guys aren't as innocent as an average citizen.
>took the ones we threatened hostage, and mangled the hand of someone who attacked us in self-defense when we held a pistol to her head.
Yeah that was pretty bad, all around.
>It was also stated IIRC that Mik feels pretty shitty about it.
I agree we should feel shitty, but we shouldn't dwell on it.(we did frame some one for murder before as well)
>>
>>33827796

Yea.. I'd actually thought people had wised up about that until we decided to go the whole, "we're magic and special!" route with the guys in the sewers. We're special alright...

>>
>>33827864

>We always try to weasle out of it, and he implied that he knew a way with out being dangerous, which makes me beleive that there are unknown short cuts, but atleast we got to the city at the very least.

Actually, that's the part I have the most problem with. In the past, we've always bargained in good faith. We might drive a hard deal, but if someone's square with us, we're square with them. This is the first time someone's tried to bargain with us in good faith, and we decided to try to screw them over. Everything else snowballed from us trying to rob someone that was bargaining in good faith with us.
>>
>>33827996
Yeah it did snowball, but we have threatened before before for cheaper prices/lower fees.
Hell before this encounter we scared a guy into giving us a better deal on stuff we bought.
>>
>>33827995
We didn't "make" it like that, it was just a coincidence that it turned out like that. We were planning on framing the hooker even before we noticed she hit her head, which we thought could possibly help her case at the time, but didn't influence our actions.
>>
>>33827996
I disagree, I find the crux of it is that we couldn't trust him to hold his word, not to mention the fact he tried to rob us before hand and wanted us to go in blindfolded? Man that just didn't sound like a smart idea.
>>
>>33828048
Yet the plan was to make it look like self-defense.
>>
>>33827996
Would you say that trying to keep Lucky&P at the bar after things went ballistic and then later chasing after them is the point where it went wrong?
Because that's where we started to fuck up.
Intimidation is alright as a bargaining tool but only in that limited roll.
>>
>>33828121
Where were all you cautious people earlier when you were needed?
>>
>>33828182

Some people became cautious as a result of that decision
>>
>>33828152
It wasn't. The
plane was to frame her, the self defense was a lucky accident.
>>
>>33828121
I still find it weird that a good portion wanted to straight up attack him, especially at the bar.
>>
>>33828219
>It wasn't.
Except it was.
>>
>>33828204
I hope it stick then, at least. Just without also being reckless at the same time.
>>
>>33828038
Intimidations alright but we trapped Lucky and that girl in a ring of fire when they tried to leave.
That and running after them and breaking the girls arm when our allies were fucked up wasn't the best course of action.
And before anyone says. I know it wasn't our intention to be so violent but that's what happened.
>>
>>33828240
probably because he's a scumbag? oh well. At least we actually made it to the city.
>>
>>33828300
He is, there is no questioning it.
>>33828294
Except that wasn't part of threatening them for a trip, plus we payed him in the end.
>>
>>33828038

All that was under the bargaining option. Here's a hint. If we would have taken the bargaining option, one of the options listed, and not the threaten with fire option, then we might have done some grand standing, but when we were done we would have still been bargaining in good faith, no matter the roll. When we ignored the bargaining option, we chose to ignore the good faith route, and make sure there were going to be hard feelings, no matter what the roll. On top of that, we've been warned about a million times about using magic here. It was a given that just the act of using magic openly was going to inherently make anything we did more difficult. We chose to do it anyways.

I don't care about doing stupid stuff. We do that all the time. I just hate the idea of screwing over people just because we can, and that's exactly what we decided to do there.
>>
>>33828294

Actually, if you read what people were posting at the time, a good number of people did intend to be that violent, and they were enjoying every second of it.

Self-defense was brought up, yes, but only as a nice added bonus. Even then, we didn't actively do anything to make it look like self-defense.

Half telling the truth? Shit posting? Really? I was the guy that came in after the firefight started and asked what the hell people were doing, only to be shouted down by a bunch of adrenaline junkies that were riding high on how much damage they could do. People were having a freaking blast, with a few people going "WTF??" The threads are there to read, so lying would be a waste of time.

You decide to just sit through it as stoically as possible, though you must admit that you did mess up. You march back into the common room to find that Profectus has yet to return, but you sprawl out on one of the lounging chairs anyway. Darzi, who seems to be taking the lead in this little discussion, breaks the growing silence. “Should we wait for Profectus?” Chrys shakes her head. “I doubt he will be particularly interested in the discussion.” Skull Kid shrugs. “It's your show here, don't mind me.” You note that he's on the last chit, you'll need to check your balance after this.

Darzi is, unsurprisingly, the first to speak. “The situation you got us all into was despicable. If you'd simply paid the man or swallowed your pride instead of trying to show off your power-” Skull Kid interrupts here. “By he way, and I mean this seriously. Stop doing that. You did it again when we were with those scavs in the tunnel. I understand in combat it's necessary but don't go out of the way to try and prove to people that you know magic. That shit's really, really stupid and it's going to cause far more problems than it solves.” Skull Kid clears his throat, nodding his head towards Darzi. “Anyway, floor's yours.”

Darzi seems insulted that he would interrupt her but not overly so, she quickly moves on with her little tirade. “As I was saying, if you'd swallowed your pride instead of trying to show off he would've led us to the tunnels and we wouldn't have needed to fight off a squadron of angry-what was it they were called?” She poses this question to Skull Kid, who quickly responds. “Gangbangers, or bikers. Your choice.” Darzi nods her head firmly. “We wouldn't have needed to fend off angry gangbangers. We wouldn't of had to rush our way out of the Conclave. Most importantly, we wouldn't have compromised our own morals.”

>>33828885

>>
She folds her arms in front of her chest, seeming to have concluded her speech. Chrys is the next to speak. “While I understand captives can be invaluable, the way in which you handled taking those captives and keeping them under control was deplorable. Similarly the reasons for which you took those captives were selfish and yet the entire party suffered for your decision. The proper course of action, after botching your attempt at intimidation, would have been to let the enemy flee and slip out in the confusion.” She delivers her entire assessment in a clinical fashion without letting emotion enter her voice or her expression. When she's done, she simply nods her head.

Skull Kid is the last to speak. “I mean, there ain't much for me to say that hasn't already been said. You panicked, man. That's understandable. A lot of rookies panic in a hostage situation. Next time, if there is a next time, the important thing you need to remember is to just keep your cool. If the hostages get uppity, constrain them. If they attack you, kill them. If they make a run for it, don't sacrifice your objective to retrieve them. Most importantly, get whatever it is you need from your captives and then exit the situation. Either leave the hostage where they are or dump them somewhere remote and move on with your life.” He shrugs his shoulders nonchalantly and resumes picking at his pommes frites.

Once it seems like everyone has said what they want to say you sit up and sigh. “I admit I screwed up, there's no question there. I got caught up in the moment, I panicked, I overreacted. All I can do is beg forgiveness and swear not to let it happen again.” You do mean what you say too, you undoubtedly screwed up and you have no desire to be in that situation ever again. Chrys at least seems satisfied with the apology, though it's always hard to tell with her. Darzi only begrudgingly nods her head in acceptance, where as Skull Kid stays out of it entirely.

Okay what does everyone agree on?
That we took things too far?
That things got out of our hands?
That we shouldn't have used magic?
I'd like to know before we hear from our team on how they think we screwed up.
>>
>>33828885
...Why? How could you possibly come to this opinion? Is your reasoning anything beyond "it's interesting"? The only thing I regret is not checking out the grave, but would never consider going back there for it.
>>
>>33828885
The mask part was actually fun.
>>
Profectus emerges from the bathroom a moment later in a overly fluffy robe identical to the one Chrys is wearing. He looks at everyone confused for a moment. “Shit, did I miss the conversation?” Darzi nods her head. “Yes, but if you had something to say feel free.” Profectus waves her off. “Nah, I didn't really have anything to contribute. I just wanted to see Mik get his ass chewed out.” You shoot him a glare, but there's no real feeling behind it. “A real true and faithful friend you are, Profectus. It is truly a relief that you are guarding my back in the death traps we traverse on a daily basis.”

After that you excuse yourself and retreat to one of the bedrooms in the other suite to meditate. You take a moment to stretch out before crawling onto the bed and folding your legs beneath you in a meditative pose. You're surprised by the softness of the mattress, whatever material it's made of seems to shift to best accommodate you. It's quite comfortable.

You decide to meditate on...

You sigh, realizing you forgot the egg outside. Reaching into your cloak you channel a portion of your remaining energy into the weapon and then quickly drag yourself off the bed, making your way into the common area to scoop up the rotund object. It's nearly as large as your entire upper body and must weigh nearly a hundred pounds. Almost hard to believe that this thing was considered small in comparison to the eggs the mother kept closer to its nest. You waddle your way back to the bedroom you'd claimed and set the egg down on the mattress before pausing to think for a moment. Most everything in this room is flammable, the carpet, the bedding, the furniture. Perhaps meditating in here isn't wise?

You scoop the egg up and instead carry it into the bathroom, setting it down inside the little glass box you'd bathed in and then going back to retrieve the blanket off of your selected bed. As a precaution, you open up a small window above what you think is a washing basin to let the smoke out. Finally, you wrap the blanket around the egg as neatly as you can and then assume a meditative pose on the tile floor in front of the egg. Your preparations complete, it's a simple matter to ignite the blanket and slip into a meditative trance.

The world fades away to reveal... nothing. The ebbs and flows of vys you grew so used to on your own world are completely vacant, despite this being a city of several million people at least. The area should be richer in vys than any other area you've ever been in. The only sign of vys in the entire town you can see is a bright glowing globe at the very top of the tower, from which a narrow stream of vys extends towards the forest, towards that miniature sun at the center of the forest. You feel a pang of concern that there isn't a single spot of vys visible beneath the tower, but you try to ignore it.
(1/3)
>>
Trying to gather your vys is a futile endeavor that leaves you more drained than when you started. Instead, you focus on trying to keep the egg warm. It's a simple, monotonous task. Your perceptions shrinks until the only things you're conscious of are yourself, the egg, and the fire. All of a sudden you feel that same consciousness invading your own, forcefully inserting alien knowledge and instincts into your mind. The flames roar to life, enveloping the egg completely. Reflexively you cut back the flow of vys into the flames, but you overreact. The flames nearly gutter out and you feel the presence retreating. You're forced to expend a fair amount of your remaining vys to coax the flames back to life.
>Vys Pool: 8/28

You find yourself quickly getting used to your newly found power. At first, you can't quite pinpoint why exactly you're able to do so much more with the same amount of vys you've always used, but you quickly begin to puzzle out the instructions left to you by whatever developing consciousness lies inside the egg. Previously when you used fire magic you were holding back, you weren't releasing your vys all at once but rather trying to minimize the amount you expended, reducing the efficiency of the spell. Now you seem to be expending every ounce of energy you pour into the spell, leaving none to either return to your reserves or dissipate into the surroundings.

Upon reaching this conclusion you feel yourself waking. Oddly the dragon doesn't pull you back into your meditative trance, but merely lets you go. You find yourself frustrated, you were hoping to figure out why exactly you weren't good enough for this little bastard.
>Insight Gained: 2/3
(2/3)
>>
Your eyes snap open to the sight of the egg's shell glowing softly through the flames still enveloping it. Slowly, the fire dies down but the glow remains, illuminating the veins and cracks that spiderweb the eggshell. You find it curious, but the glow soon fades and you're left to hoist up the egg and carry it once more into the common room. You see that its been abandoned, your companions long since retired to bed. Oddly you don't see Fulvia anywhere either. You set the egg down on a chair and then return to the bathroom to wash the remnants of the blanket down the drain.

You settle down in the common room, sprawled out on a lounging chair with a book in your hand. This morning you've decided to finish off the Five Effects, reading up on the Slow effect. Like the Speed effect, Slow occupies a sort of hazy category between metamagic and regular magic. However, its effects are practically the polar opposite of Speed, as their names would suggest. Instead of hastening the effects of a poison, paralysis, or leeching spell it delays their effects. The author gives the example of a slowed paralysis spell. One could cast it on a person and not have the actual paralysis take effect for hours. A slowed poison spell could kill one's victim long after the caster has left the area. Where speed amplifies the brute force of a spell, Slow increases its tactical applications.

The author also notes that spells like paralysis, leeching, and poison cast in conjunction with the slow effect will typically have a longer duration but reduced effect. The target of a slowed paralysis effect will be affected for days, but they'll still be able to move their limbs with some great difficulty. The target of a slowed poisoned spell will die a drawn out, painful death over the course of days, or even weeks. A slowed leeching spell will pull in less vys but it will cling to its target like a parasite, channeling vys to the caster of the spell for several days to come at almost any distance.

Slow can only be cast with elements in certain ways. One may slow a healing spell to give oneself a sort of gradual regeneration. It may be cast without targeting a specific wound, rather it affects the target's entire body and will activate once the target takes a wound. The duration of the spell varies based on how much vys is expended, the absolute minimum being two hours. Once the slowed healing spell has activated, it will need to be recast.
(1/3 or 4)
>>
One may cast slow in conjunction with nature magic to temporarily freeze one's perception of time. A moment will seem to stop, allowing the caster time to breathe, think, and heal if necessary. An incredibly useful spell, but intensely draining. The author notes that he can only barely maintain this spell for a handful of seconds before he begins to feel faint. Oddly enough there is no recorded instance of Slow having an effect on the speed of plant growth, but the author believes it ought to.

A slowed fire magic spell will spread across the target with a sort of inexorable determination, without the need for fuel. It will continue to burn for hours and no amount of water is able to put it out, the downside being the target has plenty of time to remove any affected garments or get out of the way of the blaze. It is best used to block off doorways or other such narrow passages.

Slowed earth magic will disintegrate a target much more completely. The author remarks that just casting this spell and holding his hand against a stone wall, the stone was reduced to nothing. Not even sand, it just seemed to vanish into thin air as his hand slowly ate its way further into the stone. Perhaps most importantly, the spell is even able to eat through enchanted objects. The author learned this by accident, apparently. Destroyed an amulet given to him by his master.

Apparently there is no known effect to casting Metal magic in conjunction with the slow effect. The author posits that it must have some sort of effect, but what it might be he wouldn't be able to say. Perhaps it would allow one more careful manipulation of metal, or perhaps it would give one the same sort of protection as a slowed healing spell, except against mind altering effects.
(2/3 or 4)
>>
Slow simply cast by itself is an offensive spell similar to paralysis. The target will feel as though they are wading through a vat of molasses. Each step will require every ounce of strength they posses and attacking will be almost impossible. It will allow the caster or his allies to easily put an end to any threat the target might have posed.

The last chapter relates how to meditate on the slow effect. As expected it's essentially the polar opposite of meditating on the Speed effect. One must focus on the perception of larger and larger stretches of time, until the moment one exist in is too insignificant to merit notice. Channeling vys into one's mind and one's perception ought to eventually make time seem to stop for the caster, their thoughts should feel sluggish and muddled.

You slam the book closed, a wide grin on your face. You feel like you've learned so much from this book, the sense of accomplishment from having finished it is wonderful. Not only that, you actually feel as though you've learned to better partition and conserve your reserves, allowing you to make more efficient use of your power.
>Vys Pool: (9/29)

As you look up from your reading you notice that Chryssa has contorted herself oddly on a chair adjacent your own. She entered without you noticing, and is currently curled up with one leg folded up tightly against her chest and the other thrown casually over the chair's arm rest. A book rest propped up in her lap, you think it's 'How Earth Vatis Built the Empire', judging by the slim sheaf of pages between her and the back cover she must have almost finished it.

You reach into your cloak and withdraw the Excidium, opening the book to your dog eared page. Absentmindedly you wonder whether or not you should get a bookmark, considering the age of the books you're reading. The pages seems sturdy though, and you've yet to have a corner break off when you folded it. It ought to be fine. You resist the urge to dive right into the pages of your book and instead address your apprentice.

“How go your studies?” She closes her book, her finger holding it just slightly open so she doesn't lose her spot. “They go well enough. I meditated last night, focusing on weakening one of the wooden legs of a chair. I do not feel as though my control of Earth magic has increased, even if my understanding has.” You nod. “It often takes several sessions for one to truly grasp the secret of better controlling an element. For instance, I've meditated on the element of Fire twice now, yet I do not think my control has drastically improved.”

Chrys frowns slightly, about the extent of her facial expressions. “This book has proved a fascinating history lesson, more than it has a magical tome. It does offer a variety of insights into the practical uses of Earth magic but it lacks detail in relation to how one learns Earth mag-” She yawns, one hand politely covering her mouth. “-ic.” She briefly rubs sleep from her eye before changing the subject. “How is it you can go so many days in a row without sleeping, yet remain unaffected?” You cock your head to the side. “What do you mean? Meditation should be more or less just as refreshing as actual sleep.” She shakes her head. “Rarely have I ever felt rested after meditation. More often than not, I feel as though I have gotten barely a few hours of sleep if any. Since arriving in this world meditation seems to do me no good at all.”
(1/3)
>>
You contemplatively stroke your chin, leaning back into the comfortable cushions of your chosen chair. “That may indicate that you're not taking full advantage of your available vys pool, not completely replenishing it during meditation. I, too, have felt increasingly exhausted since I entered this world but that is solely because this world lacks ambient vys, or at least the volume of it that I am used to working with.” Chrys nods her head. “Well, perhaps that is something I ought work on once we return to our own reality.”

That seems to mark the end of the conversation, as Chrys returns to reading her book. You likewise crack open the pages of your book and resume reading where you left off, with the author having just been accepted to work in the 'Exotic Provinces'. You're curious to know what that might mean, but reading ahead doesn't offer any immediate clarification. Instead the author details his preparations for a voyage to the exotic provinces. Apparently he'll be confined to a 'foreign ship' for some two months, and as such he's primarily bringing clothes, amenities, that sort of thing. He remarks casually that he's concealed his firearm inside of his luggage, just in case. You're shocked to see firearms mentioned so casually, were they common in Ancient Rhynia, or was this man merely exceptionally wealthy? Perhaps a veteran?

His new wife will apparently be coming with him, though he remarks irritably that she must be 'concealed head to toe' and that they will be forced to sleep in separate chambers, though permitted to at least speak with one another while on board. You find that curious, you don't recall the Rhynians having any sort of taboo about the showing of skin. In fact, they were a rather libertine culture if you recall correctly. Then again, he did state that this was a 'foreign ship'. Perhaps it is the custom of whatever foreigner they travel with?

Before you can read any further a bedroom door slides open and Profectus wanders out appearing to all the world a dead man walking. Skull Kid follows, his helmet partially repaired. It takes only a thought for you to reach out to Fulvia. {Are you in the hotel room? Everyone else is awake.} There is a brief pause before she responds. {I am on the ground floor, I wished to take a walk around the city before the party had awoken but I have been waylaid by a man proclaiming himself to be John Smith. He is trying to insist I go with him to his hotel room, despite repeated refusal.} Great, so she's being hit on by a man with a particularly odd name. Seriously, John Smith? What sort of name is that?

You sigh aloud. {Do you need any help?} The response comes promptly. {No, I believe myself capable of killing this man in several dozen different ways. It is merely a mild annoyance. If you would be willing to await me I will return to the room shortly.} You consider asking her why she wished to explore the city alone in the first place, but you decide it best not to. You can ask later if you so desire. Instead you turn your attention to the rest of the party. “It seems Fulvia decided to go for a walk and is currently being aggressively hit on by some poor idiot who doesn't realize she lacks genitalia.”

That at least gets a laugh out of Profectus, and Chryssa quirks an eyebrow in interest before closing her book. Darzi looks concerned. “Should we go down and help her?” You shake your head. “No, she proclaimed herself quite capable of ending his life should he grow too annoying. She said she'd return to the room soon.” Darzi nods her head slowly. “Still, you never know. We've seen some rather strange technology in this world, perhaps it would be best to check on her anyway.”

>Maybe she's right, go down and check on Fulvia.

Soma are Golems created with the permancy metamagic still reliant on Vys being sent to them or can they collect and spend Vys the same way a Vatis can?

there was a lot of people wearing cloaks last thread, and SK mentioned that we'll get some looks but nothing that bad about our more obvious oddities.
>>

Some method of short, half-cloak actually seems to be in style at the moment. You'd probably be looked at as odd, but not entirely out of place. The armor is the main attention grabber.

Speaking of, will you wear your armor to go downstairs or store it in your cloak?
>Wear it

>>33834695
They can collect and expend vys just like a Vatis. The Commander constructs you faced in the first ruin were able to cast spells, even if most of the others were not.

4 or 5 golems plus our small unit tactics would go a lomg way especially if we can modify them on the fly

Yeah I don't remember the exact formula for permanent Golems but I think its

Manipulate + Permancy + Animate + How big we want it tob = X vys

Whereas we can do golems now but they're more puppets they we have to spend Vys to control. Could be wrong though

You pick up your armor, tucking it swiftly into the cloak. You glance down at Profectus' armor next to yours and consider for a moment whether or not you want to leave an artifact as valuable as this one in a hotel room, but it's not like you're bringing everyone with you. You opt to leave it here. “Hey Skull Kid, does the name John Smith mean anything to you?” Skull Kid nods. “Yeah, it's like... the most generic name there is. It's the name they use refer to a corpse they can't identify or someone who they can't actually name for legal reasons. I've heard some branches of the Fed refer to their agents as 'John Smiths'.” You stroke your chin contemplatively. “Well, the man hitting on Fulvia called himself John Smith.” Skull Kid shakes his head. “A fake name, then. Not good either.”

The possibility of this being a fed rouses your paranoia. “Skull Kid, Darzi. With me. Chrys, Profectus. You wait here. We ought to be back soon.” They nod, and your small party departs the room. You note a man standing in the hallway struggling with his door, repeatedly inserting and withdrawing the little keycard with no luck. You ignore him, instead making your way to the elevator. You press the button adjacent one of the doors and only a moment later one of the elevators pings, the doors sliding open to reveal an empty compartment. You step inside and select the ground floor, sending the car plummeting towards the Earth.

Roughly half way down the elevator stops, and the doors slide open. A portly gentleman in his fifties stands on the other end. He looks taken aback for a moment, and then gives you, Darzi, and Skull Kid the stink eye before stepping on himself and turning to face the doors. The elevator resumes its plunge and it isn't long before you reach the ground floor. Stepping out into the foyer, you see a few miscellaneous folk milling about but pay them no mind, instead focusing your attentions on finding Fulvia.

Finally you spot her by the entrance, a man has her cornered against a wall and is leaning in far too close to be polite, a sloppy smile on his face. Fulvia stands stock still, staring at him impassively. She almost reminds you of Chryssa, odd that the emotionless construct is usually the more expressive of the two. Unfortunately before you get very far a woman steps into your path. She's probably a little under five feet, attractive for a human. Her skin is, to your eyes, an unhealthy shade of pale but she certainly has a generous bust and wide hips. She looks over you and Darzi as if the two of you were chattel on the auctioning block before addressing Skull Kid. “How much for an hour with the two of them?”

>How dare she insinuate that you are some sort of prostitute?!

You glance towards Skull Kid, and he seems to take the hint. He raises his voice to not quite a shout but damn near and begins to berate the woman. “Ma'am I'll have you know that prostitution outside of the Red District is a crime punishable by forced labor! How dare you insinuate that I, a law abiding citizen, would so blatantly flaunt the law in a institution as respectable as this? I could have you arrested just for asking, you know!” His little tirade is certainly drawing attention, including the attention of Mister 'John Smith' over by the entrance. Fulvia takes the presented opportunity to slip away and join your party, this Mister Smith sharp on her heels.

He makes a grab for her arm but she twist out of the way, shooting him a glare fit to kill before continuing towards your party. You see John Smith scowl and turn around, a hand reaching up to his ear as he makes for the exit. Your suspicion only intensifies, though you once more return your attention to Skull Kid. “-thing, my friends wouldn't degrade themselves by selling their bodies on the streets to any worn out old hag that approaches them? Why on Earth would you think me their pimp? Do you think me of such low character as to pawn off my friends like some sort of slave driver?!” The woman is standing there seemingly paralyzed, shocked you would say. You can't help but smirk, and Darzi seems similarly amused.

>>
Skull Kid is about to continue but he notices that Fulvia has slipped into position between you and Darzi. He nods his head brusquely and turns haughtily on his heels, calling out to the woman as he struts away. “Good day to you, madame!” You turn to follow him, but as you do so notice that a man has pressed his hand into Skull Kid's chest to stop him and has pulled out a rather official looking badge... and he has six other men with him. “Agent Smith, Federal Office of Immigration Control. We're going to need you to come with us.”

{Grab all of our stuff and hide somewhere. We're being arrested.} Profectus responds with alarm at the forefront of his thoughts. {What do you mean arrested? What did you do?} Chrys merely responds. {Understood. Keep us up to date on your location and we will free you at our earliest convenience.} Her tone somehow inspires confidence in you. She speaks as if freeing you from prison is nothing more than a minor errand for her, no more taxing than buying groceries. Next you send a transmission to Fulvia and Darzi. {Follow Skull Kid's lead on this one, we don't want a repeat of the bar incident.}

They don't respond, but you trust them to follow orders. Skull Kid folds his arms in front of his chest defiantly and ask loudly. “Are we being detained?” The officer nods, putting away his badge. “Indeed you are.” Agent Smith says neutrally. Profectus scowls. “On what grounds? We have done nothing wrong!” Agent Smith reaches into his pocket and withdraws a strange device not unlike your AWU chit. He begins to recite charges as if from a list. “On the grounds of violation of a permanent expulsion, human trafficking, illegally entering the City, failing to register as mutants, associating with political dissidents, illegal purchase of goods and/or services, and the murder of Elliot Rodgers.”

Skull Kid raises a finger as if to protest, but seems to be lost for words. He takes a slow glance around the room, and then clears his throat. “Very well, Agent Smith. I suppose we'll go quietly.” The fed nods his head and gestures towards the reception desk where you booked your hotel. “Place your hands flat against the desk and spread you're legs. You're to be pat down and then handcuffed and brought to the Council Tower for questioning.” Skull Kid moves to obey, a defeated look on his face.

I think it'd be worse right now to let them take us in, I say fighting is what I'd pick right now.

Well I for one would find it seriously entertaining to be paralyzed and unconscious for days in a vys starved world after using the spice. To me, that simply sounds like a whale of a time, and of how a highly critical thinker the suggester must be.
>>
>>33836836
I don't know, we're pretty low on Vys and they presumably have some kind of advanced weaponry. We're also outnumbered and not wearing any armour.

I'd like a few more votes. This is pretty important.

We'll just spice up our speed abilities fast enough to rickify everyone in the room, no probs, lets do it!
>>
>>33836875
They better not try to take our cloak though. Or our egg.s We worked hard for those.

Maybe it's the guy SK knows pulling an arrestation to pull the wool on everyone?
Maybe?
Right?
>>

They're taking us to the tower right? That's where we want to go

samefag

Fight or run to the forest guys, surrendering sounds like a bad end.
>>
>>33836936
Maybe, this hotel that SK is familiar with, and a guy with a fake badge, are all here to cash out on otherworldly prisoners, and he's just the bait to the ruse.
>>
>>33836889
We can almost certainly just earthcorrode/melt the cuffs once we're outisde, no? then we can bolt for the sewers.

Its in possession of us, so its more like what happens when they try to take us away from the void cloak?

You reluctantly force yourself to move over to the desk and place your hands flat onto the wooden surface, spreading your legs apart. It's an awkward, undignified pose. It's made no more tolerable when a portly gentleman, come to think of it the same man you saw step onto the elevator, comes up behind you and begins to roughly check you for any sort of weaponry. He flips your cloak over your shoulder to keep it out of the way, and once he's confirmed that you carry no weapons on your person he flips your cloak down once more and pats it down as well. Fortunately, he finds nothing and Ricky doesn't try to drag him in for a snack.

The same is not true of Darzi. They find two daggers on her person, one in her boot and one hidden in her voluminous sleeves. On Skull Kid they find a small pistol concealed in a pocket and a tiny knife you'd think more suited for opening letters than killing a man. As they're finishing up you hear a quiet voice filtering over some sort of speaker in one of the men's ears. It's hard to make out the words, but you do pick out a few. “Room... two people... out the window...”

You feel a flash of concern. You'd told Chrys to hide, not go jumping out of the window with Profectus in tow. She's sturdier than your average human, certainly, but not sturdy enough to survive a fall from this height. Profectus at least certainly isn't, he'd splatter like an overripe fruit on the concrete below. You can only hope she knows what she's doing, but knowing Chrys it's a fairly safe bet that she does. Before you can worry yourself further the man who'd been patting you down grabs your hands and slams you forwards into the desk, forcing your hands behind your back and locking them into a pair of manacles.

You're dragged off the desk and forced to walk forward along with Darzi and Skull Kid. Half the people in the hotel lobby follow you out, it hadn't been seven officers it must have been at least two dozen, and outside you find more waiting for you. They've surrounded the entrance with some sort of low concrete barrier and there must be eight armored officers with rifles not dissimilar to Lil' Bastards aimed directly at you. “This seems a tad excessive.” You announce to the gathered officers, to which the man behind you barks. “Quiet, mutie!”

You find yourself stuffed into the back of a heavily armored vehicle of some sort, a vehicle lacking wheels you note, and chained to a row of benches on one side. The compartment is dark, cramped, and dreadfully stuffy. Darzi is seated across from you and Skull Kid adjacent, and then the door is slammed shut and you're plunged into darkness.
