Your forces have spread out among the stars at last, although not yet in full force. Your pods drift among the human systems wrapped in a cloak of twisted light as the humans of the Union move about their duties. You watch in silence as a tanker exits warp and drifts into the docking clamps of Gibson station.
“USV Jeremiah O’Brien requesting permission to dock.”
“Roger that, cleared for gate two.”
“So you got the graveyard shift again?”
“Of course. You have that new string for us?”
“Sorry, doesn’t show up on the manifest, but we got the next best thing, a recording of the latest semifinals match, Gemini against Mentan.”
“You’re a life saver. Tell hq we need that new string asap, we’re all getting sick of reruns out here.”
Elsewhere you watch the Texas as it makes its leisurely lap of the Koenig system and eventually accelerates into a momentary burst of radiation, disappearing past the light barrier followed by its escort. The system remains busy, filled with drifting shuttles and patrolling fighters, and at least a dozen larger ships docked to the stations.
The Valen settlement is by far the quietest, with their artificial lake now a small oasis in the dune sea of the barren rock, their cruiser nothing more than a stripped hulk.
Your last pod over Raligah watches as the humans continue to expand their small camp. A small clearing has formed where the trees have been removed and metal plating laid out along the ground.

Finished Research

>Skyl dissection
While the Skyl biology is rather interesting, you focus your attention to the complex array of microscopic machines that hold it together. When the Skyl void crystal was destroyed it appears that the machines lost power and began to fall apart from their arrangement. While they are currently inert, you were able to salvage them from the bodies. Each mechanical cell appears to still be intact, but they have lost their structure like dried out sand. The skulls of the Skyl samples each have a larger device near the base of the skull which catches your interest.

Experimentation and testing with new artificial strains of spores, as well as other engineered toxins would make it possible to produce tailor-made bioweapons that would be quick to spread and difficult to cure.

Back at your hive your drones report an interesting finding in their survey of the mountain. The mountain itself is in fact a dormant volcano, with much of the region covered in thermal vents and hot springs. On the far side of the mountain range a river flows from near the peak, and you detect a heavy mineral content within the water. The geothermal activity is rather mild, with no detectable disturbances. As a research facility it should do nicely. The heat of the thermal vents would go a long way to help hide your presence, and the mountain itself is remote and secure.

>>
>>33871709
>Start excavation
You waste no time in collecting your workers and excavators. Your shuttles carry them to the mountain and they quickly go to work. There is a great deal of water flowing through the mountain, which may impede construction, but you think that such a hazard may in fact help when it comes to containing dangerous experiments or samples.

>>33871662
It would be less detectable than the docking pylon, but once you readied it to fire it would be very easy to detect. By then it would likely be too late for the target, however.

The primary problem I have with that drone is that it doesn't do anything that a warrior cutting a cable can't do better.

That aside, Union ships have hack-proofing measures and the Unity is better at hacking then we could ever hope to be.

Btw, has anyone noted that whatever station received that football final game probably doesn't have an ftl comm, so it's ripe for the picking...

As you watch the Texas launch itself out of the system the massive station orbiting the gas giant of Calpamos comes alive with small vessels buzzing about it like a cloud of gnats. They drift to the various settlements on the small moons of the planet and you hear the station erupt in a burst of radio transmissions as docking requests and landing clearance is exchanged.

Your pod looks to the other small settlements. Calpamos has three moons, all of which appear to be inhabited to some degree. One is a primitive world with barely breathable atmosphere named Archeron, the second is a bustling city along the equator of a moon covered in small grasslands and sparse brush. The transponder labels it as Deckard's Claim. The third is a frozen ball of ice named Djin. It's atmosphere is filled with crystallized water thrown into orbit from thermal vents, giving it the appearance of a misty shroud as it drifts along its orbit.

Meanwhile, your corvette drifts over the Valen settlement, watching as the artificial lake continues to grow around the cruiser to form a small metal island.

As you start to lay your new drones you contemplate what you had heard from Gibson station. If it was true and they had no working means of FTL communication it would mean they were incredibly vulnerable. The only issue you see is the mining colony further in the system of Kaltara. You doubt the humans in the small station would be complaining if there was an FTL communicator on the nearby planet, but you can never be too sure.

"It is finished. For the most part."
Theseus interrupts your thoughts with a detailed overview of the Clarke. The hull has been repaired, the damaged systems rewired and the power tap stabilized. The only things that remain damaged are the shields, the weapons, and the gravity drive. The shields and weapons were destroyed during the crash, and left nothing to repair, but the gravity drive only needs fuel to function.

"They are looking for their ship?"
"I believe so, although it is unusual that they would focus the search on such a narrow area, unless they assumed it had been salvaged. The radiation and gravitational anomalies are indeed from the Clarke, but the valley appears to be much cooler than the surrounding area."

I would rather reunite Theseus on our terms rather than give him Canderon that he uses to then escape on his own. This way he's indebted to us, rather than us getting nothing out of it.

>Finished research
Bioweapon research
While containment may be an issue, with your new research base under construction you doubt it will become much of an issue. The basics are quite simple. Use a contagion to attack the enemy, in practice it can be much more challenging.
With your thinkers finished they present their initial findings. Humans and Ceph alike would be highly susceptible to biological attacks, but the Taidarens' immune system is far more robust than you initially estimated. With your current understanding of the limits of these alien biologies you should be able to assemble basic toxins and pathogens to target other species.

>New ammo type
Dart - this small slug is capable of injecting a dose of chemical or other biological substance into the target. It cannot puncture armor, but is useful for infecting soft targets at a distance

>New adaptation unlocked
Hypodermic claws - These blades contain a small hollowed out section capable of holding a biological toxin or pathogen. While the blades themselves are made less effective against hardened armor, any attack that breaks the skin will inject the substance into the target.

>New technology unlocked
Poison gas - this gas is highly toxic to breath, but will dissipate into the air quickly, making it most useful in closed spaces.

Spore strain - Essentially just the wild ocean spores, slightly modified to be more potent and more hardy. It is extremely lethal and difficult to contain once released.

Your corvette ascends into space and quickly breaks orbit.
"The human gave us a lighter. I can see why they would regulate against that now." You respond. It seems to go over the head of the Theseus in your corvette, but you can sense the version within the Clarke respond. "And a mastery of humor, an even greater feat!"
In a flash of radiation your corvette is gone, and then back. Your view is that of a single gas giant. A massive orb of blue and orange stripes. In a low orbit, just skimming the atmosphere is a massive cylinder of metal. Lightning bolts arc from the clouds to the hull and back as a stream of gas and asteroids flow into the open end of the ship. Almost at once a formation of cruisers accelerates in your direction as you detect Theseus feed a string of data to you, which is then transmitted via radio. Each cruiser has deployed a cloud of small spherical drones which have assembled in a wall between you and the server ship.
As Theseus finishes the transmission the wall parts and a single cruiser closes in on your corvette slowly. You receive a transmission in return.
"Transmission received. Dock with vessel to initiate exchange."
As your corvette and the cruiser close in you notice damage on the server ship. A wave of flickering lights from a swarm of repair drones flashes along the hull like fireflies in a mirror as they slowly close the wound running along the ship's side. This must be the same ship that was driven off by the Union fleet some weeks ago. They must have taken extensive damage to still be repairing.
>>33876735

Your corvette stops a short distance from the cruiser.
"Just jettison the cargo." You say, " I can take it from there."
A large crate drifts from an open port in the cruiser, followed by a smaller black colored box.
"Accept this Quantum communication system for purposes of future negotiations." With that the cruiser fires a number of thrusters and slowly drifts away. After it reaches a far enough distance from your ship it jerks and accelerates away behind the wall of drones, which promptly close back into their defensive formation and reverse their thrust.
You take aboard the cargo. The crate of canderon feels almost empty, but you confirm it is indeed filled with the strange, glowing substance, like shimmering liquid gold. The small box is indeed a quantum communicator, and is no doubt connected to a server ship, if not this one itself.
"We can go now." Theseus remarks simply.
You watch as the flow of gas sputters to a halt and the cruisers retreat to within the vast ship's hull. As you charge your drive the server ship begins to slowly crumple in on itself, bending like a twisted lense until the hull is deformed into a sphere of curved light which quickly fades. Your own ship blinks into nonexistence and back again over your hive.

Just a crazy idea: even if he did share us the older kind of drive, we could make a 'trap' spaceship if we wanted to. Based on the designs of the human ships we spied on their territory (and the Clarke), we could design a ship that looks like a human ship on the outside, but is a combat monster on the inside.
No wait - what if we make a hermit crab kind of ship? All we need is a good debris field and we have our dormant army.
Just a crazy thought.
>>
>>33878265
"And you intend to share this data, of course."
"Of course." He says.
Your workers haul the crate into the Clarke and begin to refuel the drive ring. It takes some time to properly distribute the substance within the ring, but soon the Clarke is ready for launch. You note that the Clarke should be able to dock in your docking pylon in the event of future modifications or repairs, although it would be an awkward fit.
Theseus begins to run the drive through a series of basic tests. The drive ring shimmers like a golden halo as the canderon within twists and contorts the light around the ring into a tight band. "A six percent efficiency increase, and three percent stability increase over previous generations. I would greatly enjoy to see its capabilities in the field."

You have a psionic relay installed on the Clarke, fusing it into the deck plating on the bridge. It seems to be one of the most well defended locations on the ship. The relay is installed directly into the ship's systems, giving you control over the drive, although it feels sluggish and clumsy, especially compared to your own ships.

The stone dome built around the Clarke begins to crumble and cave in, the chunks quickly being devoured by a small sun floating just above the ship. Theseus slowly moves the singularity along the dome, removing the rubble before a number of thrusters along the underside of the hull fire, hoisting the ship up by its stern. The entire ship slowly moves into a vertical position, hanging in the air by its drive ring.
The Clarke slowly gains altitude and eventually makes it to orbit and rights itself.
"The gravity drive uses the standard of the human world of origin, Earth's gravity field as a measure of acceleration." Theseus explains. "This ship appears capable of accelerating at up to fifty thousand gravities."

"Did you have an intended destination?" You ask.
"It will take some time to reach the edge of the system and build up enough speed to test the warp drive, but a short light year into open space should be a sufficient test."
You activate the acceleration and watch as space contorts in front of you. The hive behind you turns red and quickly fades away, the stars bending around where it was as the light around you is slowly compressed into a tight ring. The Clarke's systems quickly compensate, altering the view back to some semblance of normalcy. It lacks the grace of your own ships, as if it is violently throwing itself through space. With the slightest movement of the singularity floating just ahead of you the ship jinks to the sides.
"Evasive subroutines are still functional." Theseus says. "Now all that's left is testing the warp field itself."

The ring of light tightness as the ship gets closer and closer to the light barrier until, with a sudden snap the view cuts to darkness. The light rumble of the interstellar medium glancing the hull halts abruptly and the drive seems to go silent.
After an hour the stars erupt from nothing like a newborn universe, instantly filling the Clarke's sensors as the nearly nonexistent particles of interstellar space impact the hull like cold molasses.
"Two light-years per hour, by the looks of it. The Union have been making improvements." Theseus says as he reviews the data. Despite, or perhaps because of all the fuss you feel more than a little disappointed in the performance. Theseus seems to notice. "Of course it can't beat yours from what I've seen."

On the way back you go over every detail of the system, measuring its performance and stability.

We're at the point where upkeep and cost of land drones is pretty minimal and having the best of the best for scouts means not squandering opportunities.
>>

Small drones have comparatively limited operation time, I believe. The faster wings should increase effective operational range, albeit most likely only marginally because of the increased energy costs.
>>
I was going to wait to comment on making the spy drone or not, but since were talking i think we should use it's senses to study the environment, how the climate effects the local life and how they deal with it's changes, to find species we haven't found for dissection and study, observe the one's we have as they interact with there environment, to gather information on area's we start exploring, and finally whatever it was ment for.

You leave the Clarke docked at the pylon for now as Theseus calibrates the systems after the test run.
Your new Corvette patrols your space idly as it awaits new orders, although without a cloaking field you let it remain on defensive duty. Your pods continue to observe the humans, although their progress is slow and inefficient.

"Hope, we found something. I think you'll want to take a look at this."
An image streams in. It's grainy due to your poor angle but you manage to intercept it. At first it appears to be nothing but jungle, but deep within you see the glint of some sort of glossy substance, like a wall of smoothed obsidian.
"What are we looking at here, ground team?"
"We're not sure, but it looks like some kind of temple. Thermal's picking up nothing, and sonar can't look through, but it looks like most of it is buried under ground."
"What's it made out of? How old is it?"
"Can't tell right now, but I would say it's old. Really old. This forest didn't grow over it over night. We took some more photos, pass them along to Fleet."
"Roger that. We're receiving updates at the moment. The string should be calm in a few hours, we'll transmit them."

You look through the photos. There is something off about them. One is a dark wall covered in roots and carvings depicting various strange creatures in an abstract fashion, another shows a vast wall carving depicting what looks like some form of battle. The last is rather striking, depicting an army of small creatures below a large being of some sort, curves and lines are carved around the heads leading upwards like waves.

"Natives?"
"I don't think so. They don't match the native life at all. Totally different biology by the looks of it."

I'm thinking of the nature of maintaining and securing borders when it comes to an FTL menace.

I mean, *we* can just jump 25 lightyears into their territory over five blinks before we have to turn back and refuel.

They don't refuel. They could slip into the space between stars and go right past stars we occupy and to the homeworld, probably.

>>33881292
I'm somewhat doubtful that Unity would commit to an assault on a fledgling Union colony for what amounts to archeology.
>>
>>33881292
Only once they resort to analog computers as backup.

It denies them their normal, high powered quantum computers. It's a significant handicap.

Also, consider the class and size of the USV Hope, and the likelihood of containing very large megaton missiles, versus our own capabilities.
>>
>>33881293
If we don't intervene information about our race will leak out.
>>
>>33881279
Probably the most useful thing to do right now would be either block the signal or stop them from transmitting in first place, buy ourselves more time.
>>
>>33881325
Are you sure?

I don't think that's imminent danger.

They can't even enter the temple without being psychic.
>>
>>33881292
On intervention, we could request Unity to perform a raid and we can slip in undetected during the chaos, but we don't exactly trust Unity very well at the moment and we trust them even less with the potential information that could be found in that temple.
>>
>>33881330
If Theseus hacks the Hope, will that destroy their FTLComm?

That'd be ideal. But they could escape the system physically if they're not destroyed.
>>
>>33881279

Our corvette is pretty capable of taking them down by itself, if I'm reading things right. There's a massive boon to the attacking force in space battles, and our ship is specifically designed to be a burst DPS ambusher.
>>
>>33881323
Oh shit! Remember those nukes we have?
>>
>>33881330
FTLcomm is impossible to block.
>>33881342

>>
>>33881325
That's quite the assumption there. If the carvings were depicting members of our race, don't you think that would have been mentioned anyway?

We have to weigh the potential benefit of whatever is in this temple with the consequences of attacking the Union. Even if we pull off the attack successfully, Union presence and aggressiveness will increase as a result of their losing a ship and a colony.
>>
>>33881221
You ponder the situation for a moment. The Hope will be unable to broadcast for help while it is receiving data from its Quantum communicator. It would be the perfect opportunity to clear the area and investigate this planet yourself, but if the attack was fumbled things could escalate quickly. Sneaking onto the planet would be even more risky, but it's hard to say for sure. Of course you never know if the Unity would be willing to help and take the blame for the attack, but that could cost you.

I just realized that Unity also uses gravity drives, and they would take a while to get there. Perhaps we could do a first-strike on the Hope before they call for help, have a Unity ship be seen in-system as a cover for our forces if there are any survivors then explore the temple.

The Linear Particle Beam is more powerful, and allows a *continuous* freakin laser beam. Hence the very high rate of fire.

The C-beams have a very low rate of fire, they're very sensitive. A few pulses of devastating lasers, but they're far apart.

A continuous beam is much more devastating.

Your corvette accelerates to Raligah, its cloaked form leaving only a slight shimmer in the void of space.
"Hey, there's that signal again."
"Another super nova?"
"No, no, I think it's something else. Hope, requesting permission to investigate."
"Granted Three-two, stay on alert."
The small escort fighter quickly disappears from view, becoming nothing more than a dot on your sensors.
"Nothin yet. Hell, maybe it's just a pular or somethi-" You hear several alarms blaring through the radio. "Fuck, fuck! gravitational anomaly at six five five. Shit, it's a space fold!"
Your sensors detect a massive gravity well in orbit above the gas giant and a massive metallic shape unfolds from nothing. As light returns to its normal shape the vessel begins to release layers of drones like a shedding animal.
"Multiple hostiles incoming, get to warp, I-" The signal cuts abruptly. The shape rotates sharply on its axis and a kinetic round erupts from the pointed edge of the hull.

And you unleash the lance.
A wall of white flame erupts from your corvette as the sheath of twisted light breaks apart around it and engulfs the Hope as it accelerates away. You manage to catch the rear edge of the drive ring just as it leaves your range.

"Unknown target in close range! Shields up!"
"Extensive damage on aft projectors, power failure on multiple decks!"
"Move to one six three, full acceleration ass-end! Load the fifties and bring the rail to bare! Now!"

You detect power fluctuations throughout the Union ship, but as it moves away you see it flipping end for end to face you.

It's also fortunate that we went ahead and made another corvette. Though this one we sent was kind of carrying our entire military. Still, Theseus' drones supporting a Speaker 2.0 and some Workers ought to be able to eliminate the humans and explore the ruin just fine.

Your corvette accelerates hard after the Union cruiser as the swarm of Unity cruisers accelerate ahead of the server ship. You detect the initial salvo of the server ship impact the surface several miles from the base camp, far from the temple, fortunately.

"Hope, report! Hope, what is your status!"
The hope doesn't give a reply as its hull is rocked with the recoil of its railgun and your ship enters a wild spin in the opposite direction. As you watch the stars spin you see a bright streaking dot of light erupt from the Hope and arc towards you.

You send your corvette twisting through space, trying to stabilize from the impact. As you focus your auto cannons on the incoming warhead you take stock of the damage. The impact was bad, punching a hole clean through the hull and almost half way through the ship itself. You detect multiple injuries, but surprisingly no deaths.
Your auto cannons unleash a wall of metal slugs at the incoming warhead, filling the space around it and peppering the Hope with shrapnel until one of them hits. The blast is powerful enough to reach your ship, slamming into it and sending it into another spin. Several pieces of damaged hull disintegrate from the heat. As the explosion subsides you make out the silhouette of the Hope, its drive ring shattered where you had damaged the shields, and its forward cap is cracked in half and bleeding water, covering itself in a crystallized cloud.
At that moment it splits in half as a kinetic round nearly half the size of your corvette slams into it at a maddening speed. The halves enter a spin, slamming into each other and tearing themselves apart from the force of impact. The remains of the drive ring begins to spin faster and faster until it flattens and begins to stretch. The forward half is quickly pulled into a close orbit and forms a flat dist around the tiny star until nothing remains but a cloud of ice and a select few scraps of hull plating.

Your corvette is badly damaged, but it can still fly in an almost-straight line. The ground camp below is in a mad panic. You can see walls being turned over and small towers unfolding. Your own weapons are not powerful enough to reach them from orbit, but you still have some options.

How long could the hive be sustained on it's reservoir if the need arises? Can we research the foam (the one used to trap are wasp) and the chemical that brakes it down for are own purposes? There's not that much value in diversification, here. We don't really need a balanced diet.

The minerals within the volcanic spring water of your new research base will sustain the jelly fungus.
No, not really, just looked through them briefly while rifling through the humans' things.
The reservoir is mostly used for your crops at the moment.
Sure! Honestly, a lot of times I don't add something to research not because I forget to add it, but because I never actually thought it would be a big concern, so any time you see something that looks cool just point it out and say you want it as a research option.
Coil's harness lets him float around using small hover pads, which are an available research option.

>>33883358
Not all that much, actually. It's really expensive, so most are limited to text or pictures, with videos taking a while to transmit. You can assume that the super wealthy would be able to afford relays capable of live video conversations or television programs, but those would be crazy expensive.

Could we turn the books into a research option?

Alsp I thought of some potential Hive constructions options:
.Armory Bunker (armory+ fortification against bombardments)
.Hibernation Lair ( a specifically built room with bombardment fortifications to protect hibernating drones as well as keep the drones from filling up regular sleeping areas)
.bunker Lab Hatchery
.infrastructure important (fortify the doors and sensitive areas with metal)
.infrastructure important (create doors out of the memetic skin combo and use them as jib doors in are labyrinth to increase the difficult of navigation as well as create a two door system for exterior doors. The system being the previously mentioned door being used before the reinforced door to hide are entrances.
>>

You mean like a strain of spores that can only infect humans?

Should make it easier to contain and predict.

tranquilizers for intravenously delivered form, and probably need a different research for the inhaleable variant.

Makes sense.

We might be able to develop pheromones for passive debuffs on the battlefield against certain species.

I hope that initial detection of a "supernova" when the Pod first blinked into the USV Hope's system never got logged on their FTLComm.

Probably got not recorded at all, right.

We really have to ask Theseus what Unity calls their drive that they refuel from gas giants.

At least a name we can refer it to by.
>>
>>33884124
Let's play "name that FTL".

Unity:
Lens Drive
Bubble Drive
Bender Drive

Valen:
Sing Drive
Dip Drive
Swim Drive
Jump Drive
Hole Drive

Unity: Space Fold Drive.
>>

Valen: Them Drive

Hey, please don't kill everyone next week, until you find out just how long the USV Hope's mission was and when they were due to return back home.

Would like a rough timetable of when they're likely to send investigators to find what happened.

Try not to leave too many obvious scorch marks on the landscape.

So I just had a idea. Does anyone remember the dead world we found? I think we could make it into a giant space station and we could build hybrid biodomes and use them to see how life we find on other worlds would interact with each other if introduced into a shared ecosystem without risking damaging there natural environments.
>>
>>33884182
Unity: Gravitic Slide Drive
Valen: String Drive

>>33884246
So hollow out the world and use its underground real estate for biome testing?
>>
>>33884246
What?

What "dead" world.

You mean the one with the Valen colony on it.

I don't see the utility in experimenting with ecology. That doesn't nab us any good adaptations.

I don't remember the dead world we found.
>>
>>33884269
Pretty much. It could have other uses too, but that was just the idea I had.
>>
>>33884287
I'd rather use it as a giant bullet.
>>
>>33884279
That isn't the dead world. It was a cold dead world with nothing of interest. I'd have to search the archive for it. It was only a one or two sentence description saying nothing of interest here.

Jesus fuck colonydropanon, don't you ever give up?

You really need to drop it
>>
>>33884279
It could lead to somethings of interest and probably have trade value to the unity as it's information they wouldn't have.
>>
>>33884346
Seeing which invasive species will destroy the others or be destroyed when forced into a habitat it never evolved for isn't that interesting as data.
>>
For the bioweapons research, we should do this: http://oglaf.com/hypoxia/

Do you mean the ice planet in our home system, the seemingly boring planet that turned out to be full of CARBON POOL CRITTERS, or some other one?
