You make a bunch of calls. And you peep in to tell Rowan about the plans, which she seems happy enough with. Cassandra and Isaac seem content enough as well, provided you’re back home by midnight since tomorrow is school. Though, since they let you do the rave thing on Halloween, this is pretty damn tame in comparison.

You let Vikrama and Baron know what’s up, and you secure pledges from both before you call Moriah and Wolfgang. This seems more like an all ages (young ages) kind of party, since apparently Sydney’s brothers sound like the type to be older than she is. You don’t really know Maviel or Waldric really all they well, but they seem hip enough to probably enjoy themselves, so you tell Moriah to pass the word along if they wanted to drop by.

And then you call Ranthix, hoping his phone’s -

“WHO IS THIS AND HOW DID YOU GET THIS NUMBER?” he asks.

You hold the phone off a few inches from your ear and sit up. “Dude. I’ve been trying to call you,” you say.

“I HAD BEEN OPERATING UNDER THE ASSUMPTION MY CELLULAR DEVICE WAS DOING ITS JOB,” he says. “I WAS MISTAKEN.”

“Well, just so you know,” you say, “I was kind of in trouble, and it would’ve been nice if you had kept your stupid phone charged.”

“WHAT KIND OF TROUBLE? DID YOU GET KILLED?”

You sigh. “Yes, I got killed,” you reply flatly.

“HA, WHAT IRONY. BECAUSE IF YOU DID GET KILLED, YOU WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO REPORT YOUR DEATH TO ANY OF YOUR SUBORDINATES,” he says. “WHAT DO YOU WANT NOW, THEN?”
>>
>>33894928

“I’m just calling to tell you I’m going to the beach,” you say. You give him the details. “Just so you know where I am and stuff. It’s probably not a good idea for you to come along, you know, because….”

“BECAUSE WHAT, SPAWNLING? BECAUSE I CAN’T MAKE-BELIEVE BEING WEAK AND SMALL? YOUR INSINUATION LACKS TACT.”

“Since when do you care about tact?” you ask.

“NEVER,” he says. “YOU DO YOUR SPAWNLING ACTIVITIES, AND I WILL CONTINUE TO DO MY ACTIVITIES. ALSO, THIS WINGTREADER OF YOURS PROVES DIFFICULT TO ELUDE. KEEP OUT AN EYE.”

“Okay man,” you say, cracking a smile. “See you later.”

“YES,” says Ranthix. He hangs up.

Goodness. Well, with nothing really to do between now and when you’ll probably leave, you have some time to kill.

Nap and work. We can socialize when we get there. And what are necessary items? I presume we get to pick an outfit properly whatever options we take, and we can always yell at Rowan or Harvey to make sure they grab all the hot dogs, burgers and buns we need. Maybe some soda too I guess.

You decide to make the most of it and get all the work stuff out of the way so you don’t have to worry about it later. You do your Catch-22 reading (which is actually kind of fun) and memorize Russian vocabulary words (which is actually kind of not) and puzzle over math for awhile, before you eventually finish stuff enough to be satisfied.

Then you get on the task of preparing for beach parties. All the things you need, you assemble. A coat, because night on the water front is cold, a blanket, because for sitting and for cold, sunblock, because you, and a volleyball, because beach volleyball is a thing when you’re on the beach. You also steal a pair of Rowan’s shorts, because you don’t have shorts, and because maybe you’ll want to get your feet wet.

And you pack some snacks into your backpack. Important things, like hotdogs, bread, ketchup, and marshmallows and chocolate. Graham crackers can go screw themselves, but you pack them anyway, because people seem to like that kind of crap without milk for some reason. And since you have time to spare, you consult with Harvey and work with him to go all the fucking way and get another bag, and throw some plastic plates and sodas into it, as well as fire starting stuff.

Not enough for everybody, but you’ll have private provisions for you and your friends, which is what’s important here.

You’re ready up the wazoo, and have no obligations until tomorrow morning. You go over and fetch Rowan, who has finished figuring out her own glamors, and looks just like before, except she has a kind of weird expression. “Glamors feel way weird,” she says, as you, her, and Harvey make your way out to the minivan.

“Tell me about it,” you say.

As you throw the bags into the car and climb in, Ro gets behind the wheel and notices your clothes. “Are you wearing my shorts?” she asks, incredulous.

Harvey smirks to himself and remains silent.

>Uh. No?

“Yep, and I’m probably going to keep ‘em. That’s what happens,” you say.

“Whatever,” says Rowan, opening the garage door and driving out.

“You should be flattered she likes your clothes enough to steal them,” says Harvey.

Rowan chuckles. “Good point.”

You pinch the fabric on your leg and feel it. “Yeah, they’re pretty cut.” Can you use ‘cut’ as a synonym for cool? Maybe if you say it enough, it’ll become a thing. “You have good taste,” you say. “Only thing with them it I have to wear a belt. They’re kind of loose,” you say, smirking. You jab playfully at Rowan with an elbow.

“Quit that, or I’ll crash and we’ll all die!” Rowan yells, as if in mock panic.

Harvey pleads with you from the back. “Sierra, please, can’t you see you’re killing each other?”

“There is no room for mercy!” you exclaim. But then you go back to not harassing Rowan. “I was just jokingly insinuating that you were fat, by the way.”

“Everybody’s fat compared to you,” Rowan clips back. “Or just wider, I suppose. You have a thin build.”

“That’s me,” you say. “Thin as a fiddle.”

“The phrase is fit as a fiddle,” Harvey provides.

“That too,” you agree.

“If you’re thin as a fiddle, I get the fit as a fiddle part,” Rowan says.

“So,” you say, “I guess everybody’s coming to the beach tonight. Because, you know. I invited everybody? And nobody said no, so that bodes well. I kind of wish we could bring Reeber.”
>>
>>33896875

“It’s not your fault you had to leave him with your demon teacher guy while we had psycho murder angel lady in the house,” says Rowan. “There’ll be other beach parties down the line.”

Harvey scoffs. “Where are you getting that from? There will never be a beach party again, ever.”

You fake cry, but then recover. “So, you invited Red Hood, right?” you ask. “I would have invited him, but his is the only number I don’t have.”

Ro seems uncertain. “I don’t know. Should I? We just saw each other yesterday. I don’t want it to look like I want to see him again so soon.”

Harvey leans forward from the back. “Well. Do you?” he asks slyly.

“Ugh, fine.” Rowan grabs out her phone and hands it to Harvey. “Okay, text him this – he’s under William, by the way.” Texting and driving isn’t just a bad idea – it’s against the law. In some states. Maybe California included?
>>
>>33896899

“What, you’d rather have your brother take dictation on a romantic text than me, a fellow girl and also mastress charmer?” you ask, playing up your charm as much as possible.

“What’s a mastress?” Harvey asks.

“I think she was going for ‘seductress’ and ‘master’ at the same time,” Rowan says, keeping a straight face.

“Shut up,” you say, glowering at them. “But really, Ro. I thought we had an understanding.” You give a kind of disappointed look back at the youngest Hallow. Harvey’s just sitting there, ready to start taking letters, as if it could happen at any moment. "Why him?"

Rowan gets a slightly pained look on her face. “Have you ever read one of your texts, Sierra?” she asks you.

>Why’d I need to read them? The point is so other people read them.

“Why’d I need to read them?” you ask. “If I wanted to read something, I’d pick up a book.”

Rowan focuses on the road. “Just… never mind. Harvey, you ready?”

“Ready as a fiddle,” says Harvey.

“Okay. Um. Say… Hey, what’s up? There’s a… get together going on at the beach. All my friends from the Halloween party are coming, and I thought I’d invite you too, if you wanted to come along.”

Harvey texts madly.

“A get together? What, are we playing checkers or something?” you ask. “Screw that. Just say it’s a party.”

“Okay, fine. Say there’s a party at the beach.”

Harvey deletes some things and rewrites it.

“Beach party sounds better,” you say. “And cut out the Halloween party, just friends is enough information. You don’t want to overwhelm Red Hood with information, do you?”

Rowan furrows her brow. “What’s up, there’s a beach party going on, and my friends are coming.”

Harvey makes the necessary corrections.

“Yeah, and then, don’t sound all willy nilly about the invite – you’re making it sound like an afterthought.”

“Well, I want it to sound like an afterthought,” says Ro. “I don’t want to come off too strong.”
>>
>>33898731

“Okay, fine, but at least make the last part have less ways out,” you say. “Don’t ask if he wants to come – that’ll make him feel like he’s imposing. Tell him, it’d be great if you could come, or something, so he doesn’t feel like you’re just informing him out of social obligation.”

“So,” Ro says. “What’s up? There’s a… party – a beach party, at the beach – wait. There’s a beach party in a couple hours, and me and my friends are all going, and I thought I’d invite you too – it’d be great if you could make it,” she says. “And then I guess include a time and the address?”

Harvey finishes it up. “Anything else?” he asks blithely.

You think about it. “Well,” you say.

“Send it!” Ro shouts.

He hits the button.

--

You swing by Sydney Edison’s house and pick up Sydney Edison, who sports round ears, not elf ears, a neon orange windbreaker, and a pair of short shorts – she’s going to be cold later. You never understood the whole short shorts thing. She greets you and Ro, and then sits in the back by Harvey. She’s way small. Like, five foot flat small. Anyway, Harvey and her have some conversation so full of metaphor and inside jokes that you can’t even be sure they’re speaking English anymore. Luckily, it’s only a while longer before you hit the beachhead, and you get shop set up.

Stress: 25/100
Sanity: 83/100

You’re at the beach, and it’s just beachy. Cold, salty wind comes at you from the Pacific.
>>
>>33898755

You can feel the subtle shift in the earth’s energy as the sun starts its downward descent in the sky, even if you can’t make it out past the heavy, overcast clouds. You take a second to enjoy the feeling of nature doing nature stuff. (-2 Stress: 23/100)

You lay out your blanket in prime blanket laying territory, along with Ro and Harvey. You kick off your shoes so you can enjoy the feel of sand, and leave your heavier clothing for later, next to your bag. You’re still getting things laid out when Vikrama shows up. “Yello!” she says, waving as she walks over. She has a huge, floppy straw hat, a pair of sweat pants, and a denim jacket. Variable clothes – good idea, for when night rolls around.

“Hey Vik!” Rowan says, waving.

“Which one’s yours?” you shout, searching the parking lot.

“Don’t mingle business with pleasure, darling,” Vikrama replies, sounding somewhat like Cruella de Vil, now that you think about it.

“Vikrama,” Harvey says, pointing at her.

She comes over and lays out a blanket next to yours and Ro’s, onto which she tosses her bag. “How are you guys doing? And it’s been ages since I saw my dear Sierra,” says Vikrama, giving you a smile, as she settles down on her property. “I hardly see you outside of school anymore. Where have you been?”

“Places,” you say.

“It’s a work study kind of thing,” Rowan supplies.

“You’ll have to tell me all about it,” says Vikrama.

“Hey, look over there – it’s the guys,” says Sydney, tapping Harvey on the shoulder.
>>
>>33898797

“The guys,” Harvey says, pointing at them.

You look over, and see a medium mob of youngish-er high schoolers screwing around a little further down the beach front. It looks like they’re still milling around by the parking lot, searching around for a good spot.

“Let’s go get them over here,” says Sydney. She gets up and heads off, Harvey getting up and following a moment after, sparing a second to rid himself of sandals.

Vikrama takes a deep, satisfied breath. “Ah the beach. A blank canvass of possibility. You can do anything here,” she says. Then she lies back and, apparently, goes instantly to sleep. Though maybe she’s just enjoying the environment.

Hmm. What will you do with a blank canvass of possibility? It may be a little early for a bonfire.

It must be done

Is sunburn still a thing for Sierra? With her fire resistance, she could probably quite comfortably sit in that bonfire.
>>
>>33899766
Sunburn is different from fire burns. I fully expect some of our durability and regen abilities to be able to offset any increasing Verwelken vulnerabilities though. One question is whether our glamor suppresses the problems of sunlight on our prehensile shadow, by virtue of effectively moving the shadow out of the sunlight via magical trickery at the expense of not being able to use it until we get it back out.
>>
>>33899766
Fire burns and the Sun are two different things. Avoid the sun.
It's bad news.

Rowan gets up and heads down to the water to kick around and whatever.

You make sure to apply sunscreen. Lots of sunscreen. You came prepared, after all.

Vikrama cracks her eyes at you as you rub your legs down. “Are you expecting the sun to explode before nightfall?

“I’m not taking any chances,” you reply.

“A little sun never hurt anybody, my dear,” she says.

You glare at the sky. “Yeah well, me and the sun have a special relationship.” If it weren’t overcast, you’d probably be a lot less comfortable than you are now. Luckily, while the ambient light is seemingly omnipresent, it is not as bright as it might otherwise be, thanks to the cloud cover. “And you’re not including vampires,” you add.

Vikrama closes her eyes again. “I think one day, you’ll learn this isn’t one of those things you can just run away from.”

That statement sticks with you, for some reason. “You’re right,” you realize. “I have to hold my ground somewhere, right?”

Vikrama doesn’t answer, but you set to work anyway.

You can’t run from the sun, but you can hide from it. Hide behind great bulwarks of sand and fortifications made of sea shells, towers of wet sand poured carefully from on high and molded together by the iron grasp of a queen’s gentle but firm hand. (-4 Stress: 19/100)

And the tides, perhaps one day, will lap upon these lands, and will break on these walls, and all will be laid low in a great, aquatic cataclysm brought on by astronomical events impossible to constrain, but while this fortress – this temple of respite, remains standing, those passing will find refuge in its shadow, and comfort in its sandy embrace. A monument to an era of industry and peace. A testament to the troubled foresight of a woman who feared the past, and worked toward the future. A symbol of sandy strength and -

“Wow, that’s some castle you’ve got going on there,” says Baron, planting his feet on the outskirts of your domain.

You glare up at him, over your nearly two foot high ramparts. Baron, of course, dwarfs your fortifications. He’s in shorts and an oversized, formless hoodie. “You’re standing on verdant farmland,” you growl at him. “Back!”

Baron looks down, though he can only see sand – he clearly lacks vision. “Ho-okay,” he says, taking a big step back, and looking a little weirded out by your reaction.

You realize you have a headache. You rub your brow, and grimace, though it’s fading. “Didn’t mean to be snappy,” you say. “I was just uh… getting involved, I guess,” you say. You’ve got to get a better handle on yourself. Buckle down, you. (+1 Sanity: 84/100)

Nathan’s nearby – Baron must’ve invited him. “Hey, anybody got a volleyball? There’s a couple people looking to start a game up,” he says.

Vikrama continues impersonating death.

You take note of your surroundings for the first time in a while, since the last time you made a water trip for castle construction. Harvey and what you assume are his many friends are punting a beach ball around. There’s another group that’s hunkered down on the sidelines and enjoying soft drinks and the like. You guess if there really is going to be booze at this thing, it’s coming after the sun goes down, which should be in an hour, probably, gauging by the ambient light level.

You look over, and see Rowan sitting with just her feet in range of the waves, contemplating the expanse of ocean before her.

>Yeah, I have a ball. But hold up, I plan on being involved.
>>Go see if Rowan wants to join you.
>Well have fun and stuff, I guess. I’m going to go walk off the horizon or something. Anybody want to join me?
>Go get your feet wet. Or more like your shins – you had to get your feet wet during castle construction.
>There’s a bunch of little shop things on the beachfront. Maybe you could check those out until it’s time for six foot high flames.

Higher CO2 levels and temperatures are actually boosting plantlife globally right now. There's been a pretty significant greening of the earth. It doesn't get mentioned in the news much, but if you actually read the scientific material in the IPCC reports and wider literature, a temperature rise of up to 2 Celsius is supposed to be overall beneficial., both to the environment and to us since it'd make growing crops a fuckton cheaper and easier.
