WIll looks at them, trying to see what the heck you’re talking about. “Who has calluses on the inside of his thumb, save he who… like, you know, uses a monkey wrench at least twice daily? Add to that an abnormal greeting – howdy, and practical clothing, and there’s only one profession that fits the bill. Or should I say, rather… Will?” you finish, giving a broad, dashing smile to all present.

Rowan groans at the pun. Will and Baron, however, have a laugh.

“Is she like this all the time?” William asks, consulting Rowan.

“Mostly,” Rowan answers.

“I’ll stick with one-drink Moriah,” you say, sitting down next to her. You lay a hand on Reeber’s shoulder and massage the fake fur. Fake fur has never felt so fake good. “You can take off and stuff, Baron. Go get a sandwich or something.”

“You sure?” asks Baron, looking over at you. Though the fiery half-light isn’t really enough to see his expression clearly, you can tell he’d be okay watching over her.

“No, yeah,” you say. “Just bring me back a beer and we’ll call it square.”

“Right-o,” Baron replies, pushing out of the sand and joining Ro and William.

“See you later,” Ro says.

“Nice to meet you for real,” William says, nodding.

“Don’t die,” you reply.

The three of them head back into the crowd, while you sit on the sidelines with a softly groaning Moriah. “Are you like, blitzed right now, or do you have more of a hangover?” you ask.

“Can you talk later?” Moriah asks from beneath her arms, her voice small and pitiable.

You wanted to ask if her having a hellion has anything to do with her negative reaction to alcohol, but you decide to hold it off. Though, if she’s really scrawnier and bonier than her glamor lets on, that could be a possibility. You never really thought about it before, but Wolfgang seemed okay with it, so you didn’t even think twice.

It’s nice just sitting and doing nothing with Moriah and Reeber for a few minutes. You wonder where Wolfgang’s got to – you were under the impression he’d be watching his sister like a hawk. Maybe he’s more loosey goosey than you thought. Or maybe he told Baron to look after her? Questions abound.

You search the darkness with your shadow sight. There’s a few little groups sitting off in the dark, away from the bonfire and the center of the party, but it looks cold over there without the fire. The clouds have begun to break up, and you can see a couple stars shining down from above you. Except, without the cloud cover, you think it’s dropped a few more degrees, and the sea breeze isn’t really making anything more comfortable.

Then you make out Wolfgang. Or somebody who could probably be Wolfgang. He’s sitting out by the ocean, with his back to everything. He has a nice view with stars and stuff on the flat, black horizon.

Baron returns about htne, a beer in one hand, a sandwich in the other. He offers you the beer, though he keeps the sandwich for himself. “I recall somebody asking for one of these,” he says, smiling. You take it and smile back, and Baron settles down.

You crack open your brewskie. “Thanks, bratahn,” you say, taking a drink.

Baron doesn’t know the word. “Bratahn?”

“Russian for bro,” you say.

He leans back on his arms. “They teach you all kinds of useful factoids in that Russian 101 of yours,” he says.

“Nah, I got that one from a park ranger,” you reply. “All you do in Russian is learn how you’ll probably never be able to learn Russian.”

He chuckles. “Should have signed up for Sci Fi Fantasy, Sierra,” says Baron. “We’re going through a bunch of short sci fi stories right now. Aliens getting kids to invade the earth for them, what life would be like if robots from the 60’s conquered the world. Real deep stuff.”

You down more of your drink. “Meh,” you say. “I already gots to read like, three chapters a day of Catch-22.”

“How’s that going?” he asks.

“Finished it today. But I’m technically still obligated to finish it by the end of next week,” you tell him.

“The pressure must be killer,” Baron says flatly.

“Kills,” you agree. A gust of wind hits you, and you shiver, even with your jacket and stuff. You should really grab your coat from where you left it. Or maybe…. “Hey Reeber, boy,” you say, looking into the face of your hellhound. “Go get my blanket. Blanket. Go get it.”

Reeber nods and shoots off into the night.

Baron watches him go, until he can’t keep track of him anymore. “Is that actually going to work?”

“Probably not,” you say. “I don’t think I taught him the word for blanket yet.”

Sure enough, Reeber trots back, a frisbee in his mouth. He sets it down at your feet, and then curls up between you and Moriah. You rub Reeber vigorously. “Good boy,” you say, running your hands through his fur. “You got the Frisbee. Frisbee, that’s a Frisbee you got me,” you tell him. You finish by dangling the Frisbee in front of his head, and setting it down in front of him. “Take your frisbee!” you say.

Reeber picks up the Frisbee with his teeth, and settles back into his spot, eyes closed, and the plastic disc still in his mouth.

“Fast learner, your dog,” says Baron. “What was he doing with the huge guy with the hummer? Nate says he’s your personal trainer or something, but I think he’d had one too many drinks.”

“Rax’s a family friend,” you say. “We had a guest over with allergies, so he looked after Reeber for a couple days.”

“Interesting guy,” comments Baron.

You’re still cold though. Frisbees don’t fix being cold. “I’m going to go grab some blankets,” you say. “Moriah could probably go with one. She’s not looking so hot. You want one?”

“I’m good,” says Baron.

No way a hoodie and swim trunks are enough in this weather. You snort. “Whatever. I’m getting you a blanket anyway,” you tell him. You get up and trek off into the night. Reeber watches you go, but stays where he is.

You shove your hands deep in your pockets, but it is a penetrating cold that is not so easily warded off. You eventually get to your stuff, and your castle. You collect Rowan, Harvey, and your blankets from where they lie, and make your way back to Baron.

You emerge from the darkness and toss one blanket high at him. It pretty much lands in his face, and he grabs it off. You take the next one and set it lightly over Moriah’s shoulders. She clutches at it and seems to disappear into its recesses. The final blanket, yours, you wrap about yourself like a cape and mantle.

“You know a lot of interesting people,” says Baron, watching Moriah.

“Count yourself interesting then,” you say, imbibing more spirits. “Lucky, I mean. Count yourself lucky.”

Baron sees that you haven’t sat down again. “Going someplace?” he asks.

You nod off to where Wolfgang’s sitting in the dark. “I’m gonna go check on Wolfgang,” you reply. “You okay with Moriah?"

“No problemo,” he says. “So long as I keep the dog.”

“Ugh, deal,” you say, with mock impatience. You spin around and trudge back into the night, clutching your half-can of beer. The cold doesn’t bother you, now that you’re armored with a heavy quilt.

Stepping shouldn’t be too much of a problem since you can see where you’re going, but even so you stumble a couple of times over the blanket. You feel less coordinated than you usually do. Still, you control yourself enough to sneak up on Wolfgang. Surrounded by the dark and the sound of your approach masked by the gentle crash of the surf, you’re in your element. You come up on your prey, who has the whole of his consideration fixed on the Pacific.

You are unnoticed.

You approach, and Wolfgang glances in your direction, his arms loosely locked about his knees.

“Nice view,” you say, sitting down next to him on the sand. The ocean really does seem to just stretch out before you forever, though. If you look at it the right way it’s almost like there’s nothing but the sea and the sky.

It’s a small relief to get off your feet. You’re feeling kind of wobbly after starting in on this latest beer. Which reminds you. “Your sister totally got blasted offa one drink,” you say, breaking the quiet. “She didn’t strike me as sucha light weight.” You manage to keep your words straight for the most part, but maybe three drinks can only dilute so far in your one-thirtiesh frame.

Wolfgang leans slightly toward you, as if telling you a secret. “Moriah’s never drank before,” he tells you. “The first time a hellion has alcohol, there’s a chance it turns out bad.” He pauses for a moment, searching the sea. Maybe somebody’s drowning out there. Well, maybe not out there, but somebody’s probably drowning somewhere, right?

Wait, did Wolfgang just say something? “What was that?” you ask.

“I said Mori may have bad luck, but she should be fine in a couple hours,” Wolfgang repeats.

“That’s good news,” you say. You were worried she might be bad tomorrow morning at school, which you’d feel guilty about. Even though she was the one that went ahead and got drunk. You feel a slight fogginess in your mind, but you power through it.

“So…” you say. “There’sa party and food and everything, and you’re over here in the dark, watchin' waves.” You look over at him. “Something on your mind?”

Wolfgang thinks about it for a minute before deciding on an answer. Finally, he speaks. “Not particularly. I was having a quiet moment,” he says. “I keep busy, for the most part. School. Friends. Work. Living on my own. There’s a lot to do when you’re paying the bills – some of them, at least. I’d have a lot less time on my hands if my father wasn’t footing the cost of my education,” he explains. Then Wolfgang lets out a long breath. “And now Meckor’s dead and the Marshall is on our side,” he says, sounding fatigued. “Haven’t had much a chance to… just sit down and not worry about anything. Not in a long time.”

He has a look of weariness on his face, though it’s something you can pick up coming from deep within him as well. The wind blows again, cold and sharp. Wolfgang takes a deep breath and braces himself against it, content to weather it as he is.

Hellions dine on spellcasters. They only have to eat the hands.

Seeing how tired he is makes you tired, though not physically tired. Since you ran into Isaac, your life has been a rollercoaster. People dying and people trying to kill you. You killing people back. Then just… you killing people. You’re tired of things happening. You’re tired to the core.

But Wolfgang seems to have the right idea. Sit back and do nothing. “There’s a thought,” you say, preparing to do just that. But you’ve got a quilt bigger than you are on your shoulders, and all Wolfgang’s got is his sweater. Part of you feels kind of bad for him, and you decide to do something about it. You adjust your blanket so you’ve got most of one side, and lean over and put the other side around Wolfgang. You kind of have to move a little closer for it to work out, but it does.

He doesn’t look like he expected the gesture, but he accepts it anyway. Wordlessly, he secures his end and gets it snug on him, as you do the same for yours.

Then, the two of you both look out at the sea together, and don’t worry about anything for a while.

You want to maybe kind of do something right now, but you’re not quite sure if you really want to or not. But one thing’s for sure, you can’t just say a line like that and get away with it.

You slug Wolfgang in the shoulder. “Wow, I bet that sucks a whole lot,” you say, snorting sarcastically at him.

“You asked, I answered,” Wolfgang says, wincing as he rubs his arm. “Anybody ever tell you you’re a hard hitter?” You’re pretty sure he’s mocking you.

He accepts this without issue. “Fair enough,” he says.

For some reason, his smooth response sets you off. “How are you so chill?” you ask, not really expecting an answer, but wanting one anyway.

Wolfgang considers the question. “Enough people say something, eventually it becomes true?” he guesses.

You snort, and kind of give him a half-humored glare. “Guess I’d just be throwing one more on the pile then,” you say, getting kind of in his face in an attempt to make him lose his cool.

And then you find you’re kind of in his face, and neither of you have lost either of your cools. Your face is kind of by his face in a kind of unplanned way that gets your heart hammering for certain reasons.
