The evening is deepening as you approach the Tabbycat, the shadows of the two, sphinx-like statues at its front sprawling out across the road, as if basking in the falling light. You approach the broad shouldered bouncer (a different guy from last time, you think) with no small amount of trepidation, briefly entertaining the thought that Hardy, in a fit of vindictiveness, could have issued the order to drop you on your ass on sight.

He doesn’t hit you, however. Just regards you with a big, looming scowl.

You flinch uncomfortably as she steps behind you, laying her fingers across your shoulders. The feeling lingers for a moment, but ebbs gradually away, the warmth of her hands transforming into something vaguely reassuring. You feel almost like a child.

“Okay…” You say. You don’t know what else to.

Sending a text to Remy informing him of where you’ll be, you sit down before the altar of the piano, the holy warmth suffusing you. You breathe in its aged scent, slipping off your gloves and slowly, respectfully, running your fingers along the keys. You feel it awaken.
