You continue to bask in pure unknown bliss as the show finally finishes falling. Though it was simply a light dusting, it lingers on the ground for a few moments before mixing in with the mud, leaving the area coated in a thick ground fog.

Turning around you someone shifting under the ruins of a dilapidated house, the suns fingers poke through the dark clouds as Lord Hitomi approaches Kujo, his white fur cloak becoming matted with mud. “We suppose you may have some questions for Us...”

As the two men begin talking you notice a single page among a now spent fire. Lifting it out of curiosity to get a better look at it, you realize it’s a page from the tomb of the mysterious armored creature. As you attempt to decipher the language its in before it’s consumed by the flames, you feel a shiver run up your spine and a knot twist in your gut. Doubling over from the pain you clench your eyes opening them to see that the flames have burned the page to ash. Something feels different, but you’re not sure what.

You clench your forehead and brace yourself on a downed piece of timber; however you notice your hand pales and your veins run purple if only for a moment. A lavender weblike substance forms on the lumber as small mushrooms and bulbous boils form on a small area.

You let out a scream and fall backwards into a puddle, soaking what dry and clean clothing you had left. You hold your hand out in front of you in disbelief. “N-n-no way…” you chant to yourself. A few beads of tears form in your eyes before you calm yourself.

Getting up, you hit the wood again. Nothing. Ok, maybe it was a fluke? You slap it once more. Kagura seems to be watching you, but you pay her no mind. Nothing again. “What if…” You think of the wood sprouting mushrooms and slap the wood and sure enough a single sprout “blossoms.”

“Well that’s a thing.” You say looking quizzically at your hand.

Standing up and attempting to brush some of the mud and debris off of yourself you make it over to Yura whos face seems to be fixed in a constant wide eyed scowl as she sits with her arms wrapped around herself. “Heeeey… how are you feeling?” She doesn’t respond. Ya that’s about what you’d do if you had a few dozen fist fulls of bugs shoved down your throat. “I’ll… come back.”

You put your hand to your mouth and fight back the urge to vomit as you make your way over to Lord Hitomi and Kujo.

Retracing your steps while fruitlessly looking for the strange sword the black knight used, you find that Yura still hasn’t moved since you last saw her. Still sitting upright. Still wide eyed and scowling. You crouch next to her. “Hey… are you going to be alright? That was pretty terrible.”

Her eyes dart to yours before looking back off into space again. Her body shifts as if inhaling, however she pauses and looks around before pressing her hand to her mouth and nodding her head.

“… Inuyasha wants to go get some magic sword to keep his borther from murdering everyone. Do you want to come along?” you say, scooting closer to her.

“Just th’ humans.” Inuyasha scoffs

“Have you been following me?”

“Not my fault yer in my way when I’m walken’.”

“D-does he have hair like yours?” Yura mumbles through her hand.

“Who, Sesshōmaru? I oh’no. I an’t seen him since I was…” he starts counting on his hands before frowning “Well I an’t seen him in a long time and it’s not like I ever went touchen’ er feelen ‘em.”

He pauses as if mulling something over. “I suppose then I would have to follow you with or without your consent.”

“Why would you want to do that?” you ask. If anything he should want to be as far away from this as possible.

“What about your wife?” you add.

He pauses and looks at you… no, through you. “I have a confession… my wife died some time ago. Stricken by illness. My shop and the stories I amuse myself with are all I really have left.”

He kneels to be eye level with you. “I aim to learn from the three of you and record your journey for future generations. Then one day, once I am prepared, I will restore my sons honor.”

Lord Hitomi steps forward, “Of coarse We have also offered him sanctuary within our city as a small recompense for his loss.”

You really don’t know how to react to this. You’re bad at dealing with grieving people. Hell until recently, your life was a pretty sweet free ride with you seated firmly in middle class.

You know you can’t go home thanks to those strange men and you can sympathize with that, so having a kindred spirit forced into a life of adventure might give you someone you can talk to about normal people stuff in a crazy world. Plus you do feel pretty bad about his son.

“I… guess I don’t have a problem with you coming?” you nervously chuckle.

“ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Fine! He gets killed or… AHH! Fine! Just keep outta my way.”

Kujo stands and bows. “Thank you.” Before turning to bow to the Lord behind him. “I am sorry I cannot accept your invitation at this time h-“

He holds up a hand. “There is no need for apologies. Yokohama will always be open to you. In fact, We would like to extend a formal invitation to all of you.”

A guard walks up to you and hands you a piece of parchment.

“Take this travel permit and you will be welcomed to any town or checkpoint under our protection.”

You take the papers with both hands and bow your head in reverence to the lord and his gift. He still seems a bit odd to you, but his assistant is flat out weird. That fan of hers is almost certainly unnatural. The glasses seem a little out of place too.

Your thoughts are interrupted by one of the soldiers however “My lord, what should we do with the town?”

He pauses for a moment before speaking “The dead must be honored, yet this scourge must be eliminated in its entirety. Burn the bodies individually, and keep as much of the town intact as possible. Post a notice as well.” He finishes walking off.

The soldiers and your team proceed with digging shallow pits for the mauled bodies, using wood from the ruined buildings to form pyres. You can’t find any traces of the black creature throughout the now almost barren town and as you stand watching a field of bodies burn into the late afternoon, you cant help but wonder why your life turned out the way it did.

Kujo rises from his prayer and pockets his beads before retrieving his pack and sliding the sword into it. He gives one last wistful look at the town before joining the soldiers at one of the gated entrances as he hammers in a signpost before mounting his horse and riding off with his lord.

“Ok.” Inuyasha grins, sliding his red top back on as the four of you continue walking down the dirt road “Lets get started…”

Overhead the stars twinkle amidst a blanket of deep blue; the waxing moon casting its eerie glow on the fields you’ve been walking through for the past few days now.

Walking is beneath you as is following. It sickens you that you have been reduced to such a state. You have been searching for decades and you can sense that your prize is well within your grasp, however it eludes you ever so slightly and your patience is wearing thin.

In the distance you spot the makings of a wall and were there is a wall there is a village. A village filled with worthless commoners. Your eyes narrow at the thought of such a place, however it has been quite some time since you’ve eaten and though its lodgings may be inadequate and the food lifeless and bland it will have to do for the time being.

You cross the threshold and open your eyes. A gust of wind kicks up soot and reignites long dead fires. On this wind a familiar scent.

Under you, you hear the sounds of gasping and shouting, but you are far too transfixed on the scene at hand. Betraying yourself you feel your lip hook into the faintest shadow of a smile.

“This is certainly an interesting change of pace for you my dear brother…”

I had all these little footnotes and other things and it's pretty cool to be able to use them in tandem with working some QM magic and thinking on the fly. Its given me a chance to do what I think are some pretty interesting things with the characters and setting thus far and even some things I wasn't anticipating or expecting. Don't be afraid to get a little crazy, as long as it's in character. I'm pretty hyped up for some of the things that I have planned down the road, so stay tuned!
