Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you read a book, learned to better manipulate fire, and chatted with your companions while on the road to the Water Temple.

You glare at the fortress for a moment. The last time you wandered off the road to explore a seemingly normal fortress, you ended up trapped in an ancient mine that stretched miles into the surface for almost a week and then got dragged through a portal into an alternate dimension for another week. You're finally home, you intend to stay here for a while. Instead you simply roll on past the fortress, over a rather fragile looking stone bridge. You'd be concerned, but it doesn't take long for you to figure out the bridge was formed magically. It supports the weight of your carriage easily and as you roll across you take a moment to peer down into the abyss. You see torches moving to and fro across the riverbanks like little fire flies as people go about their business. The next moment the sight is gone, you're once more on solid ground.

The road takes you on a looping path around the fortress. You ignore the branch that would take you to the main gates, instead making sure you're still headed north. With the fort behind you, you turn your attention to Chrys. “Do you want my cloak? I can always use magic to keep warm.” She shakes her head. “No, it's fine.” She pauses to yawn, covering her mouth. “If I wore it your pet monster would probably beg me to go out and capture a sheep or something equally ridiculous. He is similar in many ways to a particularly unruly child. However, I thank you for the offer.”

(1/3 or 4)
>>
You reach into your cloak and pull out a bottle of wine. Not the good stuff, but it'll do. The glass is clear and the wine inside is a deep burgundy. A cork seals it closed, but you pull it with your teeth and stuff it into your cloak. You're assaulted by the scents of cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg. You think you might also smell pepper, but you're not certain. You raise the bottle to your lips and feels like fire when it hits your tongue and seems to burn warmth into your chest as it goes down. As it settles in your gut you decide it's good, but needs to be warmed up.

You manifest a small flame just beneath the base of the bottle and let it heat the wine until it's near boiling. You swirl the contents around a few times and then gradually cool the wine to a drinkable temperature. When you next raise the bottle it slides down much easier. You're not sure how they managed to make wine this alcoholic. It must be fortified. You're about a third of the way through the bottle when Chrys interrupts your growing stupor. “What is that you're drinking?” You glare at her suspiciously. “Wine, fermented and aged grapes. Surely your people have it, yes?” She shakes her head slowly. “My father drank a type of liquor derived from anise and artemisia, but it was said to make a man go blind and half-mad. I never had much interest in it.”

You pass her the bottle and she takes a tentative sip, before kicking back the bottle. She passes it back to you, now significantly lighter. After a short while she nods her head. “It is sweeter than I would like, and as thick as tree sap, but I still enjoy it despite these issues.” You shrug your shoulders. “My people have always preferred their drinks sweet. I'm surprised it isn't more honey than wine. Normally I would add sea water to thin this, but none is available at the moment.”

(2/3)
>>
You spend the next hour or so passing the bottle back and forth as the carriage rolls down the road. You're feeling... drunk. Dead drunk, in fact. You ought to be able to handle yourself just fine though, right? Probably. Hopefully. Oddly enough Chrys barely seems inebriated at all. She drank just as much as you did, or almost at least, and her face is barely flushed at all. She isn't slurring her speech and she seems rock steady. You knew her constitution was greater than that of the average man, but you're still impressed.

Unbidden, she blurts out “I hope that bomb did not erase my name. I carved it into the wall next to the door, but I am unsure just how large the explosion was supposed to be.” You glare in her general direction. “When did you carve your name in the wall? I never noticed.” She thrust a finger into the air dramatically. “Of course not! You spend the vast majority of your time in a semi-catatonic state. I carved it while you were purging Fulvia of corruption, when the guards were changing shifts. I did not wish for it to be obvious, only to be found if the room was closely examined.” She nods her head firmly, finally lowering her finger. Maybe she's a little drunker than you'd thought. Her head whips around, the helmet portion of her armor has been pushed back so you can see her face. Why is she glaring at you? You didn't do anything...

“Why have you been so nice? You did not question me when I asked to travel with you, you invited me to plunder the ruin north of Licae by your side. You've saved my life over and over again. What do you want?”

>Pfft, what is she even talking about? Want? Why would you want something?

You scoff. She punches you in the shoulder. “Don't laugh! I am being serious.” You rub your arm when she hit you, even the lightest tap seems to hurt, damn. “Easy! Gods above, woman. No need to get violent. Wasn't even laughing just... why would I want something from you? You were the first-” You wave a hand searchingly in the air as you try to think of a phrasing you like. “You know, anything really. First thing I met that was friendly. Besides Sadik, at least. He was just...” You scratch your head in thought. “Probably just looking to take my money. Now that I think of it. Anyway, it meant something that you didn't try and kill me. Most of my own people, hell my own little sister probably would've killed me.”

You stare off into space for a moment, running over what you just said and trying to decide whether it was at all coherent. Your thoughts are unfortunately interrupted before you can decide. “So, I earned your loyalty?” You squint at her. “Yeah... I don't know, I guess you could say that. I mean, I'm kinda the leader here but it'll do.” She nods her head brusquely, apparently ignoring the vast majority of what you just said. “Good... so, if I were to ask you to perform a task, you would be happy to do so?”

Why is she being so weird? She's not even acting drunk, she's just acting all... weird. Don't her people value bluntness? Why does she keep beating around the bush?

>Maybe? It depends on the task. What is she being so cagey for?

This is weirding you out. She's been doing that a lot lately, come to think of it. Granted she is tipsy. This is the first time you've seen her the slightest bit inebriated. “I dunno, Chrys. Maybe? I mean, you're acting all... strange. I mean-” You wave a hand in the air, it's a gesture that doesn't really mean anything but you felt the need to make it. “-I guess as long as it's not mass murder or... burning down a city, or killing one of our party members.” She screws up her face in confusion. “What? No! Why would I ask you to kill one of the party? I rather like our fellow companions. I suppose I am a tad suspicious of Fulvia and Mortia, but I wouldn't want to see them harmed.” She shakes her head. “No, listen. What I have to ask of you is very personal.”

She takes a deep breath. You think this is probably the most words she's ever said in a row. “I want you to... kill my husband.” She's staring at you really intensely. It's a little unsettling. “He wed me by force, not of my own free will. He tried to force himself upon me multiple times. The vows I made prevent me from pursuing other romantic interest. In short, his death would make my life immensely more pleasant.”

You sigh, heavily. That seems like... a lot to ask of a friend. You still sometimes recall the face of Lord Spiros as you plunged a dagger into his abdomen and watched the life leave him, some part of you feels guilty even if he was a horrible person. From the sound of it, Chrys' husband is just as bad, but on the other hand you only have one side of the story...

>You'll do it. Not immediately, mind you. You still need to reach the water temple and have a few obligations to fulfill, but you will do it.
>You can't justify killing her husband. He was kind of a dick to you, and he did attack you once, but that doesn't mean he needs to die.

You glare at her for a moment. “This doesn't mean we're married, does it? I mean, you're great, really. Cute and all that. Just, you know. Marriage is a big contentment-” She cuts you off, why do her cheeks seem so much more red. “No! No, no it doesn't mean we're married.” She clears her throat. “It simply means I am a widow. If I were to seek another husband, I would need to craft a new marriage sheath. Then-” She shakes her head. “We've been over this, it's not important. When you are ready to depart, come speak with me. You will need to go alone, I would not wish the others to find out about this. I will provide you what information I know of him and of alternative entrances into the city. You will need to leave a body, but you need not take any trophies if you do not feel him worthy.”

Conversation sort of dies off after that. No better way to kill a buzz than talk about murdering a woman's husband. Seriously, you were really enjoying just being drunk and happy. That was fun. Now you're just sort of drunk and... unsettled. You feel a little sick, and your head hurts. The sun starts to rise, and you notice the surroundings are starting to get more lush. You can smell the sea on the wind and gulls soar by far overhead. You have to be near the coast, and hopefully that translates to near the temple. Perhaps an hour later you're rumbling along the coast, the road once more paved and straight, rather than a winding dirt trail. The sun is up properly by the time you spot smoke rising on the horizon.
(1/2)
>>
Instead of a vast temple complex, as you'd expected, you find that the road ends and a dirt path begins. It winds its way down a cliff face, onto a series of wooden slats that run along the white, sandy beach. The tide is just going out, and there seem to be an inordinate number of crabs, sea shells, and plant life scattered across the wet sands. The scene is almost achingly familiar, a reminder of a youth spent submerged up to your neck in sea water, trying to master the most basic of techniques.

The wooden slats eventually lead you into what seems to be a village of some sort. It's built up the side of a mountain face, the architecture odd for the region. You note a vast number of fishing boats setting out with the tide, and a good half of the buildings are built on little isolated islands of rock in the bay. There seems to be a small fortress situated on the highest bluff, and a small canyon carves its way into the mountain, a waterfall thundering into the bay from high above. You can't help but think that formation looks unnatural.

>Make for the fortress.

>>
>>34210671
Thanks, but I meant right now, as in if we should just let this thread die.
I might as well paste what I was going to ask on your ask.fm here in any case though

>killed form resembles Pani's depiction
>"Died Ignobly, Killed by His Nature"
>Nature magic from within grave
How did it take so long for me to figure this out, the guy in the tomb is the former god of Nature, since nature is the pair of water, makes sense they resemble each other.
>tfw we missed the chance to have a god indebted to us by freeing/reviving him+good points with Pani because they're siblings or something

>"Entombed Within The Bones of Earth"
So we can assume the female figure was the former god of Earth, though it's strange that she is dead now as well, maybe killed/other by the rest.

Am I on the right track?
I'll just ask this on your ask page too if you want, but please answer somehow so I know you saw it.
>>
>>34210792
You're moving in the right direction, a tad skewed but definitely getting there.

Also, good news! I'm apparently not doing anything to day. With that in mind, I'll be continuing this thread shortly. As in, as soon as I finish my bagel and start writing.
>>
>>34210928
hooray! It was a good thing not to close the tab all day
>>
>>34210928
>a tad skewed
Well, let me reconsider then
>4 figures present
>no metal except for when killing "nature" god
>in bones of earth
If nature god really is nature god, then maybe the female figure was metal and taking revenge for earth (or the other way around and using weapon to be symbolic or something)
also
>metal is "lost" element
>mask belonged to a cult to a dead god
this would point towards dead god being metal, if we didn't also see the coffin of "nature". And if metal wasn't still (presumably) practiced in the forests (though bad relations between them and the rest could be a result of conflict between gods)
We don't know of any cultures heavily tied to earth magic, do we?

Otherwise my theory of elemental relation=physical resemblance falls apart, in which case I might as well be shooting in the dark.
>>
>>34211096
Perhaps the Metal is tied somehow to Earth and Nature?
>>
>>34211096
>>34210792
Went back to check out the thread.
>Taking a closer look at the sarcophagus, it is carved with intricate geometric patterns. Mostly straight jagged lines with no real rhyme or reason to why they're carved in any one position. On a magical level, you feel that whatever is inside the sarcophagus exudes an incredible amount of power, bleeding it into the air around it. It's not just raw vys either, but rather distinctly earth magic.

It wasn't nature magic inside the tomb, but Earth magic.
>>
>>34211096
Ehhh, I probably shouldn't say whether or not you're getting colder or warmer. But you're getting colder.
>>
>>34211227
colder=ice/water, warmer=fire
>>
>>34211141
Well, metal is the opposite(in its effects) and pair to earth after all, I had assumed they had similar relations to water+nature. But now that I consider their applications/effects, it seems significantly different to what I assumed.
Considering water and nature don't contradict or work against each other, but in fact are almost helping each other. metal/earth might by rivalry.

>>34211201
You're right, and now that I look at the archives
>>30844217
>Going along the wall carving, Surya is entrapped by one of the figures in a cage of stone, and then the other figure lashes at it with a blade of ice. The god is cut, and his blood drops from the bars of his stone cage, down onto a dot bellow
>>30858714
>Surya is leashed by a collar of what you think is earth, the horned figure bowing low to what you think is Pani and offering her a chain.
So 4-armed is earth, and was allies with Pani (though I still find the physical similarity between water+earth strange) and is killed by a female with a dagger
which oddly reminds me of Chrys because crossed arms/daggers/slitting throat of male, but whatever
Now we need to figure out what "by His Nature" means.
>>34211227
How about now?
>>
>>34211372
Warmer.
>>
>>34211372
It kind of makes sense. Water will carve a canyon through the earth, erode a cliff face, and covers most of the planet's surface presumably. Earth would then be subservient to Water.
>>
>>34211372
>by His Nature
Maybe Earth and Nature were a thing, then Nature went yandere and killed him?
>>
>>34211372
You do realize the names of the gods in this setting match the names of the gods in Hindu mythology.

>>
>>34211507
>en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sūrya
Currently looking for Pani.
>>
>>34211372
cont.
We can also assume that the female is either nature or metal (who else?). "His Nature" is confusing me now, because nature/water and both Pani and unknown were females, but dagger to me implies metal (since both earth and pani used their own elements)
Now we have to consider the reasons for this "betrayal". Although not pairs, metal and fire ARE linked, since smiths learn some of both during their work, and the roles of metal and earth are basically opposite of each other (corrode/strengthen) AND metal can transmute earth into metal, though we do not know if the opposite is possible. I could say the Dead God's mindfuckery could be linked to metal's mental effects, but that might just be general god dickery. All this with metal being lost and the mask belonging to a cult leads me to the female being metal.
This begs the question where Nature was during the battle and what s/he looks like.
Gods above, this is fun

Maybe the nature of Earth magic? how it weakens/destroys things and how he bowed to Pani/went against Surya?

You pull back on the reigns, the carriage coming to a sudden halt. One of the camels bays irritably, turning its head as if to see what you're doing. What's his issue? He's a camel. You shake your head, turning your attention to the nearest ship. It's a small skiff with a single sail. The fisherman is the only man on the boat and he's currently manning the tiller. You wave your arm in above you and call out in your loudest voice. “Hail, stranger!”

He calls back after a moment. “Hoy, traveler! What need do you have of me?” You cup your hands around your mouth and call back. “Do you know the way to Pani's temple?” The man points, and you follow his finger. He seems to be indicating the canyon the massive waterfall originates from. “In there!” He calls back. “You'll find a path near the canyon, it leads to the temple! Just follow it up!”

You wave to the man in thanks, as his boat slips further out to sea. You crack the whip a few times to get the camels into motion once more and then guide them over a precarious wooden bridge that spans the river. You find yourself rumbling over largely disused paths into the village, buildings appearing first as scattered farms and groupings of huts and then crowding together into what appears to be some sort of marketplace. Your carriage rolls past a bakery with its doors thrown wide open, letting the sweet scents of freshly baked baklava and the smell of bread seep out into the surroundings. You very nearly stop the carriage just to run in and grab some breakfast, but it can wait. You're so close to the temple you can taste it.

>>
A man hawking fruits and vegetables calls out to you as you pass, and there seem to be a dozen fish sellers hawking their wares on both sides of the street. The road slopes gently upwards the longer you follow it and before you know it your camels are struggling up the steep slope, towards the fortress at the top. You keep looking for a path that turns off towards the waterfall, but you don't see any. Eventually you're forced to stop as you approach the fortress gate, several heavily armored guards stepping forward to seize your camel's reins. One of them addresses you, his hand on his sword. “What business have you with Varistha Sehzade?”

You recognize 'Varistha' as a style of address afforded the head of a monastery, if you recall correctly it means roughly 'Chief' or 'Commander'. That must mean Sehzade is the name of the individual in question.

You shrug your shoulders nonchalantly. “I have come to perfect my talents, to further advance my mastery of Water magic.” The guard nods. “Are you prepared to act as the Varistha instructs, to praise the benevolent Shahbanu?” Huh, you can't recall ever hearing that style used for Pani. It's an old Hiacian imperial title, used to describe the wife of the Shahanshah. Still, your family has always had close ties with the church of Pani, so why not agree? “I will give praise as it is do and act as I am bidden, so long as my knowledge grows.” The guard nods stiffly and removes his hand from his sword, letting your camel's reins go. His companions follow suit. One of them whistles loudly and the gate begins to grind open, allowing you to whip the camels into motion again and guide them inside the walls.

The guards walk beside your vehicle, the one nearest you speaking as you proceed slowly into the fortress courtyard. “You will be allowed to leave your carriage and animals here, they will be tended to. You will need to proceed to the temple on foot, the paths are much too narrow to allow a mount passage.” You nod, passively. That's about what you expected. As you reach another gate you jerk back the reins and the camels come to a stop. You stand, stretching. One of the guards reaches out his hand towards you and you hand him the reins before hopping off the driver's bench.

Chrys is following your lead, you think. She rounds the carriage to stand by you as one of the guards climbs up into the space you'd occupied only a moment ago. You pound on the carriage door as hard as you can manage and a muffled voice calls back from inside. You hear movement, and then a muffled curse. Finally the door is jerked open and Darzi is standing before you bleary-eyed and disheveled. “Are we here?” You nod your head solemnly. “We are indeed here, and here just happens to be the Water Temple. Come on, get everyone up and out.” She peers around at the guards surrounding the carriage. “Shouldn't we leave someone with the...” She gestures to the carriage, rubbing one of her eyes. “-you know. I don't trust the look of these guys.”

“I'm sure it will be fine, they're temple guardians. When have you ever heard of the church stealing from anybody? Just make sure not to leave anything inside the carriage and it ought to be fine.” She nods, turning away from the door and starting to shake people awake. It looks like Profectus fell asleep sprawled across one of the cushioned benches that surround the table while Skull Kid and Mortia nabbed the beds. Fulvia is hedged into the carriage directly opposite the door by your dragon egg and Profectus, but she waves. It doesn't take long for everyone to file out of the carriage. Darzi is the last to leave, the Dragon Egg in her hands.

You shut the door and wave to the guard sitting on the driver's bench. He waves back, cracking the whip in the air to urge the camels into motion. They lumber their way around, turning towards what you're relatively certain are a set of stables. One of the guards whistles, and the gate you're standing before swings open laboriously. It reveals a steep with only the narrowest of paths clinging to the side of the mountain and winding its way towards the waterfall. Sometimes there isn't even a proper path, just wooden post shoved into the stone. “Proceed up the path, you'll find the temple at the top.” You narrow your eyes, briefly. Was that instruction really necessary? You decide it best not to say anything, instead simple setting off up the path.

(1/2)
>>
The path quickly becomes hazardous. The stone is slick with lichen, moss, and moisture. The closer you get to the waterfall the more deafening the sound of water thundering down the rocks becomes. You don't really have any trouble with it though, you're a water vatis. This is home to you, as far as you're concerned. Your companions are less fortunate. Darzi nearly tumbles off the edge twice, while Profectus, Mortia, and Skull Kid keep falling behind. Chrys at least seems able to keep up, but that's what you'd expect. Eventually you start manipulating the water coating the path and freezing it in such a way as to offer better purchase. Spikes of ice dig into the soles of your shoes with each step, making the climb significantly easier.

You cross missing spans of the path with bridges of ice and simply move the thundering waterfall aside when you need to pass through it. Perhaps, were you not so skilled, this would be an arduous and draining journey. A test of one's skill or ingenuity. For you it may as well be a relaxing stroll through the park. Finally you reach the top of the falls and catch your first glimpse of the monastery. It seems to be carved from the stone of the mountain itself, decorated with wood and metal. You can see the beginnings of an elaborate cave system stretching out behind it, likely also incorporated into the monastery. A massive watermill turns with impressive fury as water pours from an aqueduct above it.
(2/3, I lied)
>>
You cross the stone bridge that spans the river and approach the main entrance, a single massive door carved with an image of Pani sliding a sword into the gut of a soldier. The doors do not open for you, nor can you hear anyone inside over the sound of rushing water. Come to think of it, you don't see any handles. You raise a fist and pound summarily on the door, but after several minutes of waiting and more knocking nobody comes to greet you. You're starting to grow annoyed. You try putting your weight into the door, but it doesn't budge in the slightest. Come to think of it the wood seems in remarkably good condition, for a supposedly centuries old door in an incredibly humid environment...

You run your fingers over the ancient wood of the door, tracing the carving of Pani and the warrior. In her other hands, Pani carries her typical trappings. A lotus blossom, a scepter, and a gourd which contains either water or wine, depending on which priest you ask. Her breast are bared, though this isn't unusual for depictions of Pani, and her lower body is garbed in elaborate robes. She's wearing the lotus crown that she's usually depicted with as well. The soldier himself is fairly generic. He is garbed from head to toe in armor and wields a spear in one hand. The armor, you realize, is quite similar to your own. That fills you with a deep sense of unease, but you ignore it.

You press your palm flat against the wound in the soldier's gut, where the sword has plunged through him. As you channel water magic into the ancient wood the carving seems to come alive. Pani withdraws your sword carefully from the soulder, and the man collapses into her arms. She raises the gourd to his lips and as he drinks the wound seems to knit itself closed. When the wound is healed the two figures separate jerkily, and stand on opposite sides of the door. The soldier reaches towards the door frame and, much to your surprise, almost seems to grab onto it. The door swings inward not a moment later.

Standing on the other side of the doorway are ten or fifteen monks dressed in the traditional robes. The Varistha is standing in the center, his arms spread wide in greeting. He is obviously an old man, his beard is long, thick, and ghostly white yet despite his evident age he looks to be in good health. He is not excessively wrinkled nor does he seem blind as your master does. He stands straight and proud, and there is a certain strength to his posture. “Welcome, travelers, to our humble home. Do you come seeking the wisdom the divine?” This is the ritualized greeting a priest makes whenever worshipers enter a temple. You bow, quite familiar with the response. Darzi does the same, and simultaneously the two of you say. “Kind priest we seek only what the Gods would offer us, will you have us at your table?” Your other companions at least have the grace to bow, though they don't follow along. You're not even sure if any of them speak Samjan. The Varistha responds after a short while. “Stand proud, and enter. We would welcome your presence in this place of worship.”

As soon as your party has stepped past the threshold the door shuts behind you, an elaborate series of locks and gears clicking into place to seal it off from the world. Interesting. The Varistha speaks once more. “I am Sehzade, honored to be called Varistha. What would you ask of our temple?”

You clear your throat, trying to dredge the proper wording from the depths of your memory. It's been years since you actually went to the temple for prayer. Your parents used to make you go regularly, but once you became an apprentice it was just never very important. “A place to sleep, a task to perform, and a meal to eat. I wish only to reside within your walls for a short while.” Sehzade dips his head briefly in understanding. “Will you willingly forgo any rivalries and grudges held before your coming here?” You respond promptly. “I will.” It's not like you have to actually give up your plans for revenge, you're just not supposed to pursue them so long as you reside here. “Will you devote your life to honoring the goddess, for the duration of your stay?” You nod your head. “I will.” The Varistha eyes your companions, specifically your non-Samjan companions. “Will you hold yourself accountable for the actions of your household, so long as you remain within these walls?” You hadn't quite expected that question, you don't recall ever being asked before, but you nod your head regardless. “I will.”

Sehzade smiles broadly, clapping his hands together. “What would your names be, brother and sister?” It strikes you as odd that he's only addressing Darzi and yourself. “Mikhael Abdul-Hakim.” If he recognizes your name, he doesn't show it. Darzi speaks as soon as you've finished. “Gunay Darzi.” The Varistha nods. “Very well, Brother Mikhael and Sister Gunay. Follow Brother Aziz to your new quarters. Your robes will be delivered shortly and your household-” He stresses that word... oddly. You can't quite put your finger on whether his tone is amused, irritated, or what. “-will be housed in rooms near-by.”
(1/2)
>>
One of the monks rings a gong, and as one the gathered men and women intone “We welcome our new siblings into the fold of the blessed Goddess, may they prove noble additions.” With that, they begin to disperse. Most of them leave in pairs or small groups, while the Varistha himself bows unnecessarily low to you and Darzi in turn. “When you have settled in please come and see me. You will find me in the temple gardens.” With that he stands straight and takes his leave.

The only one remaining in the room is a young man, probably not much older than you. He's tattooed with elaborate designs and writing. His head is shaved save for a single strip of hair he ties back into a tight bun. When the rest of the temple populace has dispersed he bows his head. “You'll have to excuse Varistha Sehzade, he still has vivid memories of our wars with the Rhynians. He has difficulty giving humans and...” He looks from Skull Kid to Chrys. “-near-humans the benefit of the doubt.”

Okay vague conspiracy time.
The Earth aspect of this god was getting too ambitious for the other gods comfort.
So the Nature aspect sealed himself off to stop the Earth aspect.
I mean what can stop a god but another god?
Anyways that rev enact we were chasing after in the mines encountered another Artifact blessed by the Earth aspect similar to the mask.
Instead of leaving the sarcophagus alone and leaving he opened it and was overcome by the Earth aspect turning him into what we saw.
Now here's where it gets completely guesswork.
The god we encountered wasn't the Earth aspect. It was the Nature aspect trying to reach out to a mortal that could resist the temptation of the Earth aspect and help it cleanse the land of the growing scourge that is His disciples.

“Wait, did you say he remembers the wars with the Rhynian empire? How old is he?” Aziz sighs contemplatively. “Nobody is quite sure, probably not even the Vasitha himself. All that we do know is that he is over a thousand, probably several centuries older than a thousand. Some say he's the oldest man in Pidjata.” He shrugs. “More likely he's the oldest anything anywhere, but unfortunately the millennia have taken their toll. He spends most of his time snoozing, and I'm fairly certain that he barely remembers his youth. He'll be happy to tell stories about charging into battle against Rhynian formations but if you ask him what life was like back then, or why they were fighting he never seems to give the same answer twice.” Aziz shakes his head, pausing at a doorway.

He presses his palm flat against the ancient wood. You feel vys being channeled into the door, and then you hear the grinding of gears. Eventually there is a click, and the door swings open. “The meditation chamber.” He explains, sweeping out an arm to indicate the room. It's a fairly expansive, sand-filled room with various stone platforms and decorations. The air is unbelievably humid, and the sand is wet. A small statue of Pani with her arms spread wide sits at the end of the chamber. “Available for you at your leisure.” He channels a touch of vys into the door and it swings shut, Aziz continues on through the temple.

You seem to traverse the majority of the temple before he stops in front of another door. He presses his hand against the wood just like before and channels vys into the door. It swings open after a moment, revealing an expansive garden. This particular room seems to be primarily indoor, with braziers of hot coals burning to warm the room. You see that the foliage seems to continue into the caverns behind the temple. “The Vasitha likes to meditate in the caverns, that's likely where you'll find him later. Do be careful not to disturb him unduly. He can get cranky when woken prematurely.”

You note a handful of brothers and sisters moving along the rows of plant life, condensing water from the air and letting it fall onto the plants. After only offering you a glimpse Aziz presses his hand to the wood once more and channels vys into the door, causing it to swing shut. This time as he resume the walk he speaks. “We've got quite the expansive library, a bathhouse, and a sparring ground that used to be a Rhynian amphitheater. The village provides us with food and various services, feel free to explore it as you like.” He shrugs. You decide to take the opportunity to ask another question. “Are there any specials rules I ought to know about, or a code of conduct to follow?”

Aziz nods his head. “Indeed, there are. Should you need to leave the temple for any length of time you'll need to request permission from the Vasitha. He's fairly lenient, so don't be afraid to ask. When you wish to leave the service of Pani, you may either abscond in the night, leaving your robes in your rooms. Alternatively you may inform the Vasitha of your intentions and a ceremony will be held. There are certain expectations of monks, but these can be discussed if you decide to seriously pursue this lifestyle. You'll need to work to earn your keep of course. Brothers and sisters who do not do chores do not eat.”

That's simple enough, you suppose. Eventually Aziz stops in front of a long row of doorways. “These will be your rooms. Most haven't been used in quite some time, so you may need to tidy up. Others are recently vacated.” He turns to leave, but you stop him before he goes. You had one last question. “Tell me, have you heard of a Chetan Abdul-Hakim? He is my younger brother, and swore himself into the service of the church?” Aziz taps his chin contemplatively for a moment. “I seem to remember a Brother Chetan from the temple in El-Amin, but I could not tell you with any degree of certainty if that is your brother.” He shrugs, and with that turns to leave.

You glance amongst your party members and then open the nearest door. It's sparse, simply a cot, a writing desk, a chair, and a lamp. At least it's not cobweb ridden and covered in dust. Profectus is not so lucky, from what you can tell by his string of curses. Still, there isn't particularly much to see in this room. Perhaps they think fewer distractions will help their monks progress in the magical arts?

You take a moment to remove your cloak, and your Master's robes, and finally you start to remove your armor. It's a lengthy process, made all the more difficult by the sudden weakness that overcomes you when you remove your helmet. The second that spike slides out of your neck you feel as though you can barely lift your arms. You're forced to sit down on the bed and simply catch your breath for a moment, the weariness of a night without sleep catching up to you. Your heart flutters rapidly in your chest and you can't quite seem to take in a deep enough breath. Eventually the effects dissipate, and you seal the wound on the back of your neck. Your weariness is banished with a simple spell. Still, this entire episode has given you cause for concern.

The rest of your armor is stripped fairly quickly and you shove the entire suit inside your cloak. You pull your Master's robes back on and slip your cloak onto your shoulders. Thus garbed, there really isn't particularly much for you here. You decide that you might as well look for something more relevant to your interest and march out of the room into the hallway beyond, the door sliding closed behind you with a touch of magic.

You find Mortia and Skull Kid standing outside of one of the doors talking amongst one another. Profectus has his door wide open, he seems to be struggling out of his Centurion armor. Come to think of it, you're surprised Sehzade managed to hold his tongue while in the presence of an actual Rhynian soldier wearing the armor that surely must have become the bane of his existence. Surely if he can tolerate that he can't be too torn up about the wars of a thousand years ago.

You clap your hands together to get everyone's attention. “Alright, I'm going to explore this temple. Who wishes to come with me?” Profectus calls from his room. “Just... give me a second! I'll be there!” Mortia and Skull Kid both simply raise their hands. You assume that means something in their culture, but you're not really sure what. Fulvia emerges from her room and nods to you in greeting. “I would enjoy a tour of the facilities.” Chrys remains in her room, as does Darzi in her own.

Once Profectus has finally worked his way out of his armor you set off, wandering more or less at random through the halls of the temple. You stumble into the library more or less by accident, and for a moment you're giddy as a school girl. It's two stories tall, books lining every inch of the walls and biled all around the floors and on the tables. A display case sits in the center of the room containing what you can only assume are temple relics. A tree grows next to them, tall and strong. The only other person in the room is a strict looking woman in a monk's robes, she doesn't acknowledge your existence. You take a moment to examine some of the titles and find them all written in your native tongue, and just from the brief look you've taken you've spotted treatises on water magic, thick tomes about the nature of the universe, and a thin book about battlefield tactics. Truly, it seems that there are a wide variety of topics available for every interest.

It's incredibly difficult to tear yourself away from the sight before you, but you manage. Your companions don't share your enthusiasm for books. Well, all save Mortia. She seemed just as bewitched as you were. You resume your wanderings, but fail to find either an amphitheater or a bathhouse. Eventually you stop the next monk you see, a young boy probably no older than fifteen, and ask him for directions. He smiles and offers to lead you there, an offer you accept.

You're led through a door you had passed over previously and into a wide stone cavern, at the center of which sits a spiral staircase. A few monks sit in a tight cluster one one side of the chamber, chatting idly and sharing a meal of steamed fish and beer. Your guide explains with no small amount of pride that they produce the best spirits in the region. Temples to Pani are well known for their breweries, you don't doubt his claim.

You're led up the stairwell and emerge into a dimly lit room. A murky pool of blazing hot water dominates the area, and steam fills the air. You don't see and dividers or doorways that would suggest separate bathing facilities for men or women, but mixed bathing is fairly normal in bathhouses. “These are the baths, you may use them as you like. Those who wish to spar will typically bathe here before proceeding to the fields and upon their return as well.”

You nod in response, and your guide tiptoes around the edge of the pool. You follow suit, as do the rest of your companions. Profectus falls in, getting the rest of you wet anyway, but oh well. It only takes a flick of your wrist to dry everyone's clothes. You exit the baths through a short stairwell and find yourself emerging onto a wide, flat plain. The amphitheater the Vasitha mentioned glows brightly with carved runes and lanterns even in the middle of the day. You're led along a short path through large arched gates into the sparring ground itself.

(3/4)
>>
Instead of a sand floor, as you'd expected, the floor is composed of a signle sheet of brightly glowing glass. Runes decorate it in concentric circles, and cover the edges of the sheet. Beneath the glass you can see a pool of water absolutely replete with sea life. An isolated ecosystem seems to have sprung up beneath the floor of the amphitheater. Stands surround the sparring grounds themselves, and you spot a handful of monks lounging in the seats, talking amongst themselves. Really, life seems fairly relaxed at this monastery. You can't recall seeing anything doing chores since you got here.

You grin a wide, unsettling, unhinged grin. “Allow me to show you all something, it's a little game I've invented.” He looks at you oddly, but nods his head. “Feel free, you may use this arena as you like.” You quickly wave them out of the sparring grounds, and wait until you see them in the stands. Once you spot them you step into the center of the amphitheater and raise your voice. “Ladies and gentleman! Brothers and sisters! I come to you today to give a presentation, a simple demonstration! A game I've invented that is taking the world by storm!” Perhaps that's a bit of a white lie, but hopefully they'll forgive you. Regardless, you have their attention now.

You throw your arms wide, pouring massive amounts of vys from your body. It burns your limbs, the skin of your hands shifting color rapidly as the power rushes through it. The sky darkens as storm clouds gather, blotting out the sun and covering the arena in darkness. Rain begins to fall but it doesn't reach the ground. You ensnare it in your grasp and twist it to your will. A massive citadel raises itself, blanketing the entire eastern wall of the amphitheater. Its central tower stretches skyward like a grasping hand, secondary towers raising themselves on either end. Battlements erect themselves from ice as black as the void itself.

Waves crash against the citadel and freeze in place, a stairwell carving itself directly through the center and revealing a large pair of double doors. Fortifications spring up, blanketing the area in front of the gate. The architecture starts to shift, going through many styles. You settle on something ominous and evil. The walls are fluted and topped with spikes. A skull forms itself from the top of the central tower, its eyes glowing a strange blue light as runes carve themselves into the ice around it. As you put the finishing touches on the citadel itself you sweep an arm over the rest of the arena, turning it into a blasted, snow covered wasteland replete with strange, almost mushroom-like towers.

The armies themselves are massive. Within the Grand Citadel of the Dark Lord you raise five hundred creatures of black ice and hate. They're heavily armored, every one of them, and made from ice as dense as you can create. They wield mostly swords and shields but there are companies of archers manning the battlements and the barricades and a small contingent of cavalry held in reserve. The enemy army, by comparison, is three times as large. Fifteen hundred troops camped what would be miles away from the citadel itself, were everything to scale. Their camp stretches from one side of the arena's widest point to the other, completely hedging the citadel in unless the defenders were to flee into the stands, which isn't really a bad idea. Most of the soldiers are lightly armored spearmen, a few of them more heavily armored. They've got no cavalry to speak of but that isn't as important, because they've got something better. One massive ice golem, three feet tall. It wields no weapons and wears no armor but needs neither.
(2/?)
>>
>>34221813
So you don't want us to use an enchanted medical tool, made for surgery(that makes the patient not feel the pain and causes slight paralyze, and is wicked sharp) on some one about to go into major surgery?
>>
Every figurine on the battlefield is at least three inches tall, some taller. The citadel itself is actually taller than you are, stretching all the way up past the guardrail that separates the stands from the arena. You feel drained, but not as much as you would've expected after such a massive expenditure of vys. That was probably half of your reserves, at least. You'll have to be careful going forward not to pass out, since you'd like to be conscious to hear the applause of the crowds.

The besieger's camp begins to mobilize, soldiers their weapons. As the spearmen begin to form up into phalanxes and the massive golem lumbers along behind them, the defenders in the citadel attempt to stall their advance. Massive catapults manifest themselves atop the walls and in receptacles carved out of the citadel itself. Soldiers begin winding back the arms and loading boulders the size of your fist into the weapons with the utmost care. The Dark Lord himself steps onto his balcony with sword in hand, garbed in comically evil armor and wielding a ridiculously over sized sword. He swings it forward, and the catapults launch in unison.

The first volley impact the snow-covered floor of the arena, doing little damage. However, as the besieger's army moves progressively closer they eventually come into range. The boulders are large enough that, should they hit a formation, the vast majority of its men are thrown into the air, crushed, or at the very least scattered. As volley after volley continues to rain down on the besieging forces, they continue to advance. Their leader stands valiantly atop the massive golem that marches behind the army. Finger pointed forward dramatically. Even as the golem itself is pelted by boulders, he stands firm.

We have to cut off the flesh anyway to regrow it so I don't see why not.

Archers atop the wall begin to rain volleys of arrows down on their attackers, enough tiny little shards of ice filling the air after each volley that the whistling echoes through the arena. Finally the Dark Lord's foot troops join the fray, charging forth from their barricades to meet the oncoming spearmen.

Weakened as they are from the bombardment by both stone and arrow, the first line quickly shatters under the assault of the well trained, heavily armored swordsmen. As they break and flee the lines behind them step forward, swarming the defenders. The battle is intense, and yet still arrows and boulders rain down from above to smash the valiant attackers as they advance.

Things are not going well, but then the golem joins the fray. It smashes one of its massive feet into the formation of swordsmen, crushing dozens in one fell swoop. It carries itself forward and the leader of the attackers leaps from its head, pulling an ice pick from his belt and slamming it into the fortress as he nears the wall. He nearly slips and falls, but manages to retain his grip and begin scaling the walls. Meanwhile his pet slams its fist into one of the recessed windows sheltering a catapult, smashing it and the soldiers that were defending it.

The tides begin to turn, but then from an unwatched sally port the defender's cavalry pours forth. Fifty men on horse charge into the backs of the southern flank, hacking away at the attackers. The attackers, though brave and equipped with spears, are not as well trained as the horsemen. As more and more of their men fall to the attack their morale breaks and they run, allowing the horsemen to continue their grim reaping against the disorganized defenders trying to mobilize against them.

No, the scalpel is fine, it has nothing to do witht he actual healing, I just don't want to use another master as a crutch

Fortunately the melee is finally turning in the attacker's favor. Through sheer numbers, the swordsmen have been whittled down and chipped away at. They've steadily been losing ground, and now they find themselves backed behind their barricades. The two hundred or so defenders in front of the main gate do their best to halt the hordes of attackers but it's simply not enough. The left flank breaks and spearmen rush through, swarming past the barricades. The swordsmen try to retreat, but they find themselves attacked on all sides. They make one desperate last stand, taking many of the attackers with them, but in the end perish to the last man.

Of the fifteen hundred attackers that originally stormed the walls, perhaps eight hundred remain. The defender's cavalry continue to harry their rear. They'll charge in against one phalanx and then retreat the next moment, making lightning strikes all along the line. Finally they choose the wrong target, assaulting one of the heavily armed unites of elite spearmen expecting them to be easy prey just like the rest of the attacker's army. As the cavalry wedge hits the first line of spearmen their horses collapse. Dozens die in the initial charge, almost all of them on the side of the horsemen. As they try to recover and reorganize the spearmen swarm over them, focusing on killing the horses rather than the men themselves. Before long they beat a retreat, only a few desperate stragglers still alive. They make a break for the edge of the arena, no longer populace enough to make an effective fighting force.

As the golem advances towards the main gate to bust down the door, the leader of the attacking forces finally hauls himself onto the Dark Lord's balcony. Immediately they leap at each other, sword clashing against shield and spear scraping against armor. It's a battle of attrition, neither side having the clear advantage. While the Dread Lord is massive and powerful, the lead attacker is quick and skillful. They dance around one another as a massive foot slams into the gates below, smashing them in one fell swoop. Spearmen rush into the citadel, banging their weapons against their shields triumphantly. The day will be won, the only question remaining is at what cost.

As the battle between the Dread Lord and the General rages on the General finally gets in a good hit. He slams his spear through the Dread Lord's armor and leaves him with a deep wound. The Dread Lord stumbles back, and the General takes the opportunity to cripple him with a jab to the thigh. Unfortunately as the Dread Lord collapses to one knee he swipes at the General and cleaves the man nearly in half, cutting him diagonally from collarbone to hip. The General collapses, dead. The Dread Lord lives to hobble into his quarters, heavily wounded but alive.

The death of the General seems to drive the massive golem supporting the attacking army into a rage. It begins to slam itself against the citadel, causing massive chunks of ice to fall off of the walls. Archers tumble to their deaths and towers collapse as the golem tries to tear down the structure in front of it. Seeing that smashing its shoulder into the walls isn't doing enough, it reaches its hand through one of the carved windows that allowed the catapults to fire on the advancing attackers. With one might heave it rips off a massive portion of the wall, destabilizing the central tower. The golem roars in triumph as the tower collapses, only to be crushed under its weight when it falls atop the construct with a cacophonous thundering.

As the smoke clears, the attackers are hobbling out of the ruins of the citadel. Few remain, perhaps only two hundred out of the initial fifteen. The defenders are in even worse shape. As the attackers finish mopping up the last archers atop the battlements the only remnants of the Dark Lord's army are a handful of elite cavalry, camped in the woods a dozen miles from the citadel itself.

You hadn't realized it, but you'd slipped into a meditative trance at some point. You stand up, shakily. The clouds are only just starting to dissipate and the stands are slicked with rain and snow. You don't recall this many people being here before you started. How long has this been going on? It takes you a moment to pick out the applause and the cheering in your currently dazed and drained state. You really just want to curl up and go to sleep, but you spread your arms wide and welcome their praise. You spot Sehzade himself in the stands, observing you passively. He neither cheers nor claps, simply sits at the top of the stands with his chin poised in his hand.

What a dick.
