She pauses, looking at you for a minute. “Listen, I know I haven't always seen eye to eye with you, but-”

Honestly, if we say it in reverse order that they're listed, then both options are feasible. Probably along the lines of what was done will help with reducing his burn-out and also helping the squadron with patching Frank up after a mission. You can see her shaking her head as you leave, chewing on the options you gave her. What you didn't tell her is there's other ways, but the ones you know are all part of the Louisiana Coven's specialties- and you're not real sure your few matrons would look kindly on you just giving away secrets like that.

Though, to be fair, you're also not exactly sure you care what most of them think. They may be resisting a united American coven because they're scared of losing their political power, especially given how tiny the coven is, relatively. Then again, it's also the best in the US, at least as far as anyone you've talked to thinks, with a very high average strength among it's sisters, so maybe not.

Doesn't matter, in the long run. Eventually someone will unify the disparate US covens, and it still won't matter because you're well beyond what any of them can say or do.

Making your way through the castle, you nod at the sisters of the SEAL team that have been pulling security here- boring work for them, but necessary. That Merlin, she's something else. You're not exactly sure what the baron did in a previous life, but he had to have been one hell of a saint to get this lucky in this life. You only wish she'd had more time to follow up on the project you asked her about, but you get the feeling land strikers aren't her thing.

The marine chopper on the pad is shut down, though you can see it's pilots inside, strapping in and getting ready to get it moving. You jump onboard and take a seat, nodding at the crew chief and pulling your pack off your back to rummage around inside. You're bound for a base in Finland, so you've got some quiet time.

You pull out the battered paperback occupying a small pocket along the side of your pack- one of your favorite books, and as a girl in the academy, the one that inspired you to enter the navy's SEAL program.

Famous for his work in first proposing, then training and leading teams destined for behind the lines operations during the martian war, the man is, in some ways, considered the father of modern special operations. His school and teams formed the prototype, the first generation of any demo/sabo work that happened later in the war, and rumors say he was instrumental in getting the US to recognize the inherent potential in what had been, to that point, a limited 'sideshow' in the Subwitch program.

You're closing in on the last chapter, the one dealing with extensive post-war work in NATO and allied nations, when the crew chief comes back, holding up five fingers- you'll be on the ground in five minutes. You close up the book, standing up and putting it back in your pack. The stopover here is just a transfer- just in case someone saw you getting onto the big chopper and radioed it in to the reds. Last you heard, there's a multimillion dollar bounty on your head, which makes you grin. You think you're still worth more than the baron. Maybe you'll ask him next time you see him.

Your weapons and equipment are stowed in their travel crates, packed exactly as you'd ordered, in back, near the ramp and ready to transfer. Most of your other equipment- and your personal belongings, such as they are, will ride with the stallion down to Germany, and from there they'll hook up with VF-3's baggage train heading east.

Of course, you expect to beat them there.

The base, even in the early summer, is cold, raising goosebumps along your exposed arms. You're thankful you elected to wear fatigue pants- even the thin ripstop material helps cut the wind. A Norwegian sea king- or their designation of it, waits, it's rotors already spooling up. You nod to the crew chief of the stallion, who helps you move just what you need- your bag and weapons, while a forklift moves your strikers in their breakdown box. Even with magic, they're too heavy to move by hand, and you don't want to put them on just yet, preferring to leave that till you're mounting up in your mission bird.

The Norwegians don't talk much- they don't look at you much either, so you're relatively sure they've been told about you. You grin- the CIA and most foreign folks you've worked with like to call you Nix, though that's too flowery for your tastes. Mother of night indeed.

The flight is somewhat shorter- you're headed to air station Banak, in the north end of Norway. While you're not too sure about going on mission from somewhere so easily monitored- a single submarine off the coast could be watching for a lone aircraft, Admiral Nixon pointed out that the Scandinavian countries were giving the soviets absolute nightmares in their AOR, and provided enough proof of that to you that you didn't request a change of base somewhere inland and south.

The base is pretty small- and much colder, especially with the late evening setting in. You're silently dreading when you have to mount your strikers- always takes a while for the thermal shielding to get to work, and till then, your legs are going to be ice cold. Not that you haven't had worse, but you're a creature of the swamps and bayous of Louisiana, cold just isn't your thing.

You're greeted on the ground by a man in a US uniform- his woodland camouflage unbroken by any patches. Normally that'd put you on guard, but that's almost SOP for CIA or NAS guys out this close to a front- you wonder who he is.

“Commander Laroux?” He asks, horribly mangling your last name. It's pronounced La row, not le rux.

You nod. “Simple enough. Swim in, infiltrate de base, destroy de prototypes and anyting I can find related to dem, kill anyone dere dat looks at me, plant de beacons for de submarines, den leave.” You shrug. “Noting I haven't done befoah.”

He nods. “Good. Your exit route is being taken care of, your pickup will be marked by blue smoke if it's clear, otherwise you'll have to use the radio locator. You know the frequency, right?”

“Of course.” You say, somewhat offended. Who does this joker think you are?

Inside, a black aircraft squats, it's crew nearby and a fuel truck connected to it. Your eyes narrow. “Is dat...”

Mister Jenkins nods. “An osprey, one of the enhanced testbed models. We've been letting the Luftwaffe give it it's combat testing, that's who your ride is with. I'm assured this crew is the best special warfare team they have.”

You frown, noting the long blonde hair and distinctly feminine figures of two of them- not to mention their height. You silently curse the genes that stuck you at a measly five four. Both those girls have to be over six feet tall.

“Hey, gang. I've got your passenger.” Jenkins announces, and the four-man crew turns to look at you.

You see a grin split the faces of the two girls, while both the men smirk. “She ist very small, ja?” One of them says, walking up to look down at you. “Is ziss ze legendary mother of nacht? One so short?”

Your weapons, meanwhile, are pulled off to the side- their carrying case also containing the rest of your personal equipment- your mission specific gear in the case next to them. This mission promises to be long, so ammunition might be a concern, especially with a bigger weapon, but at the same time, you're always a lot more comfortable with the extra punch of the bigger rifles. The new XM4 you have isn't too bad, but the 5.56 round leaves something to be desired. Pistols is a whole other issue- you'd like to carry your .45, but, again, weight and ammunition might make your M9 a better option.

Of course, you'll be carrying your tomahawk. That's a given.

Sidearms
[] M1911 custom (28 rounds in 4 magazines)- It's your only custom weapon, really, equipped with a focus to make it punch well above it's weight and accurate well past what a pistol has any right to be.
[] M9 (60 rounds in 4 magazines)- Lighter and with far more ammo, it's not custom but if you're using the pistol, you might not want it to hit like a tank cannon round anyway.

In the end you leave your M-14 in it's crate, instead pulling out your much newer XM4. Rapidly stripping it of unnecessary additions, you opt for a suppressor, fairly simple, close quarters optic, and a foregrip. You won't need much else, and while you'd like to carry your M-14- going so far as to pick it up a few times before changing your mind again- you just can't justify it, especially with the mission at hand.

That said, you pull your M1911 out of it's case and pull it clear of it's holster, looking over it's lines critically, working the action once, and charging the focus located in the frame before holstering it again, grabbing the magazines for it and putting them in their pouches on your vest. The XM4 magazines you'll have to carry until you mount your strikers- they're stowed in the cargo space there. If you'd have had more time with Merlin, you'd have figured out something for a heavier weapon, maybe even one of the new M60 variants you hear the other teams are using.

Stripping out of your pants, you instantly miss them, the cold air sliding across your now bare legs, sending a shiver up your back. You absently wish for someone to act as a windbreak- you happen to know of a perfectly suited pilot.

“Yeah. I be out in a second.” You say, closing and locking your weapons cases and shrugging into your vest and grabbing the handful of charms out of your case, putting them on. Good luck never hurt anybody, and when you're part of a coven that specializes in making luck, you tend to put a lot of stock in things like these.

It feels like you've only just closed your eyes when you're shaken awake by one of the two crewmen in the back of the aircraft with you. He holds up ten fingers, and you nod. Ten minutes till your drop zone.

That's when you notice it's almost completely silent- and extremely dark- inside the osprey. “So dat be why you two be doin this.” You say. One of the two pilots up front nods, though she doesn't look back.

“It is extremely taxink on us, though. Ve vill haff to ask you to hurry.” She says.

You nod, opening your striker case and taking off the slippers you were wearing. Even steeling yourself against the cold deck does no good- your feet arch involuntarily against the cold steel, trying to minimize their contact area. It only takes a minute to slide your legs into their interface in the striker, and you feel the adjustable padding expand, tight against you, then loosen somewhat to your preferred settings.

These strikers are based on the LAV-25 the marines tend to use for cavalry and transport roles, though yours are special warfare modified- bigger, more robust shields, tweaked motive systems, better environmental sealing, and slightly increased cargo space. Your lefthand unit carries your spare XM4 magazines and the target beacon for the cruise missiles from the submarines up north, while your right side carries a small individual first aid kit, a booster relay for your radio, a survival kit, and a Demo/sabo pack, with C4 and det cord, along with several other goodies.

As usual, they don't mount the 25mm gun of the standard model- no need for it, and if you're in trouble big enough to where you wish you had it, you screwed up to begin with.

Your familiar emerges, your tail and ears appearing with that familiar pop. You're actually secretly disappointed- you always felt you should have an alligator familiar, but you guess you can't complain. Plenty of people don't have one to begin with, and can't know what it's like to harness the power you have.

The two crewmen in the back open the ramp, giving you a thumbs up. You return it from your prone position, then hit the releases on your rack, sliding out and into freefall. As soon as you're out of it, the osprey is gone- hidden by the Valkyrie’s magics. You're actually momentarily impressed- invisibility is quite a trick. Took you a long time to learn it.

You splash into the icy water with a gasp, reaching for the oxygen mask you know is mounted on the back of your right striker. Finding it, you slip it on, putting on the dive goggles a second later and opening your eyes in the dark, cold water. You'll gradually warm up as the thermal shields come up, though you prefer not to rush them.

Your target is nearly a four hour swim to the south, which puts you into the target area just after midnight local- almost perfect.

The base itself is largely new- the damage done to the ground by heavy earth moving equipment still isn't totally gone, new grass just starting to poke up from the dirt. It's surrounded by high fence, topped with multiple coils of razor wire- and that's just what you can see. You know there's probably tremor sensors buried around it as well, maybe mines.

The nearby town looks like any sleepy northern community you've ever seen, though you note the presence of several buildings that look much newer than their neighbors- probably recently built because of the base. The town abuts the base, though you can see the parameter wire runs through it still- and there's still a cleared lane of fire on the base side of the fence.

Still, the town offers a lot of cover, though at this time of night, you still run the risk of someone seeing you and crying out. Approaching from the river means you'll have to cross some open ground, but there's far less risk of running into someone.

[x] Go in via the river- you'd rather not have to deal with civilians if you can avoid it.

You elect to use the river to get closer- you'll stay with it as long as you can, though you need to remain fairly close to the aviation side of the base- that's where your targets are going to be. Hopefully the engineers too- while they're not top of the target priority, and wetworks was never your thing, knocking them out could kill this project.

You're fortunate- as you head south, the river starts to narrow, but will occasionally open up into attached lakes- lowlands like this tend to be like that, you remember. Cutting to the east, the river narrows, following a meandering easterly path- one that will spit you out squarely to the south of the base wire. Ideally, they won't be patrolling down here too much- though you see foot patrols on both sides of the fence anyway. That's good news and bad news- good because it means it's unlikely there's tremor sensors or mines there, bad because it means there's foot patrols there. You can avoid tremor sensors or mines, living troops are a bit more difficult.

You watch the patrols for a good half hour- there's a set pattern, which you can exploit. There's four groups, which seem to alternate- so there's always at least four pairs of eyes looking in a given direction. That mean killing these guys is right out- this section of wire is too small for that- but there's a good ten second gap in their coverage- which is enough, if just barely, for you to clear the fence and make the cover of the nearest building.

Alternatley, you could try to kill all of them before they could sound an alarm- the range isn't too long, and your XM4 is going to be nearly dead silent with your power. It'll let you get in far more easily, but it'll mean it's just a matter of time before they're missed and the alert goes out, meaning you won't have the same amount of time to accomplish the mission.

You decide to keep it cold as long as possible- if you're lucky, you can be in and out without a problem, and without firing a shot.

Timing it, you slowly exit the water, climbing up on to the bank of the river. Your ears and tail are soaked- no helping that- though you always hated that feeling. You really wish you'd had an amphibian familiar. You've honestly no idea where house cat comes from anyway, certainly not your mother's side.

You use your strikers to clear, muffling the sound of yourself jumping over the fence and your landing, then using them to wheel around the corner of the building. You count to yourself and peek around the corner to make sure no one saw you- the guards are continuing their pattern with no changes- so you're in the clear.

You're across the base from the aviation facilities- probably in among the barracks now, actually, though the place is quiet, very few internal patrols, and even then, they're only pairs of guys in vehicles- this is the easy part, you think.

Approaching the airfield, you notice a fuel depot- the unhardened, aboveground tanks a testament to the difficulty in working in the semi-frozen ground here. They'd also make an amazing distraction if you'd need them- little bit of C4 and they'd make some great fireworks.

The flightline doesn’t look like it's being actively patrolled- and you see four of those new soviet superfighters here, but none of them match the picture given to you- the one you're after has modified, inward canted tailfins, and it's longer than these, with a two man cockpit and a longer dorsal bulge. There's also three hangars along the runway, each of them closed up and darkened.
