Part 5

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Wilhelm of Koblenz, crusading knight in the Holy Land. After defeating a band of criminals and delivering their leader in chains to the Lord of Sidon, you have taken the rest of your time to rest and recuperate. With your band of companions ever growing you retired to a Saracen rest house to meet with friends, where you practiced your musicianship to the enjoyment of the crowd.

A night of passion with a slave girl took a wrong turn in the morning however, and has resulted in the death of the master of the house and one of his guests.

Your companions gather in the hallway over the bloody affair. Your sword is still lodged in the master of the house's chest, while Sabeen's sword drips with the life blood of the knife wielding guest.

"Sir, what have you done?" Franz asked, "What will we do?"

You draw your sword from the corpse and clean it on the hem of the corpse's shirt. Chihirizahd, clothed in only in bed sheets wrapped about her shapely frame, holds out for you your scabbard.

> we must flee
> this was not murder, the authorities will see that
> write in
>>
>>34542810

Uh, what do we know about the authorities from this time?

By flee, are we just fleeing from the house or fleeing from the city? Because we can't do latter without leaving the Danish guy behind.

>> this was not murder, the authorities will see that

For now.
>>
>>34542810
>> this was not murder, the authorities will see that

Lie if need be, they clearly attacked us first.
>>
>>34542810
> this was not murder, the authorities will see that

- The Master came to mediate the situation, because he could see the Merchant was furious. He did the right thing.

- We were personally attacked and threatened with a weapon. As a knight, we went for our sword to defend our person. We are right in this.

- The Merchant pushed the Master forward and attacked us using him as a shield. Wounds on the Master and the screaming will support the cowardliness of the Merchant.

- Witnesses saw our room being intruded upon and weapons drawn. We have muslims who can attest to our story.
>>
>>34543039
>We have muslims who can attest to our story.
Hah.,
>>
>>34543119
Considering this whole place is a Muslim joint, their word should carry some weight.

If Muslim testimony is discounted, we win by default because a Christian knight killed two Muslims.

Otherwise, just get Sabeen and/or Malik to testify on our behalf.
>>
You buckle your sword to your hip and consider the dead men filling your hallway. They had struck first, they had sought to kill you so that they could kill a woman. No man would judge that murder.

Besides which, you were a knight and they were commoners. Saracen commoners at that.

You lean against the door frame and consider your options.

"There's no sense in flight," you say, "For we've no place of friendship to go, save all the way back to Germany. We'll test this in court. No doubt a simple explanation will be enough."

Sabeen cleans the length of her blade with a cloth handed to her by Hugo. "You might well have a chance, but what of me? I am a Saracen, and a woman. There are different courts, I'm like to be tried under shariah in these Muslim quarters. It is the usual way of things, that Muslims should oversee Muslims. A favourable judgement is not likely, for a woman underarms riding with men. And the punishment most likely execution by stoning."

That takes you back a little, that someone who has come to your rescue should be punished for it. You are no expert on local law, though you had heard a little.

"Do not be quick to think that," you say, "Still you might be taken to a Frankish court. It is the same case, so the same prosecution should be brought forth against us."

Sabeen purses her lips. "But can you be certain of that? You might stay and see fair trial, but flight might be my best option."

> argue for her to stay (roll 1d100, average of three)

You think it over. You'd like for her to stay, if only to testify on your behalf, but you think it foolish for her to risk her life needlessly. With the corridor filling and her only in a short night shift you note her discomfort, her arms crossed under her breasts and back placed to the wall, scimitar tucked over her shoulder.

"If you think it best to run, run," you say.

She breathes out a long held breath.

"Thank you sir," she said, and slipped back into her room.

Malik and his men are soon in evidence.

"Aye, what is this?" he asks, startled at the sight of death, "What has happened?"

"A man tried to go through my room, to harm a woman," you say, parting a little to show the slave girl, "I would not let him."

Malik's brow crinkled. "You killed a man over a slave? You are a dangerous sort." You could not tell if that was approval or not. "I saw a boy run from the kitchens. Authorities will be here soon."

"My case is clear," you say, "I don't fear the law."

Malik nodded. "Fair point, but word has reached of my daughter's involvement from a passing gossip. We leave you here, for her safety."

"We talked a bit on that," you say, "And I can't disagree."

With that Sabeen returned armoured to ride.

"Good luck to you Sir Wilhelm," she said, eyes lingering past you on the slave girl, "Might you find justice."

"And to you Sabeen," you say, "If ever you need help, call on me and you'll have it. I owe you a great deal."

"Find us in Antioch," Malik said, "For its best we are gone from Jerusalem for a time. Peace be with you."

And with that they departed, leaving you with your men and other guests standing around the corpses.

A boy came running through the corridor.

"The Constable of Sidon is here!" he said.

> wait for the constable here
> go forth and meet him
>>
Well, if it is a Muslim trial, we just need to replace her with another person, it's not like anyone else saw her.

If we both get a Frank trial, she might have to get a champion? I'm sure Malik has competent people.

>>
>>34543727
He doesn't have any decent connections around here, since all the real power is with the Duke. As for the name, same again.
>>
>>34543760
He has two, one which reinforces our already connection with Froggy and the other with an unknown noble.

More importantly, we don't sell out our comrades like this. What would the rest of them think of our so-called honor?
>>
You decide to dress and wait for the constable at the scene of the killing. Chihirizahd has changed back into her clothes and pours you a drink of water. She waits on you were you sit, on her knees beside you.

"Thank you master," she said, "Whatever else happens, thank you."

You call for all your men to arm and line the doorway. Hugo comes to stand beside you, fluttering nervously as his eyes move between the slave girl, the corpses and the distant doorway.

"I shall commission a lawyer," Orlando said, "The best in Sidon, a Jew by name of Joshua. He has argued many a case successfully."

The constable appeared with armed men before and behind him. He was a young man, tall and fat, with stubble thick over his chin and neck and hair in patches on his head.

"And what is this of murder?" he asked. His belly visibly jiggled, even under the mail shirt he wore. For all his fat and ugly appearance his eyes moved quickly, taking in the scene.

"Sir Wilhelm of Koblenz," you say, offering the man your hand. He takes it, but eyes you sideways.

"Leon Grenier," he said, another relation of Lord Gerard. "You mind explaining all this to me?"

You motion to the scene. "I had awoken to a loud knock on my chamber this morning, to find two man waiting, one armed. They wished to take time with the lady distant, and I misliked their intentions."

"A slave," Leon said with a frown.

"A woman," you replied, "Who was in fear of her life. A woman I had given shelter for the night, to keep her from the depredations of flesh hungry men."

Leon gives you a look that said he doubted your chivalrous claim, but was more amused than angry.

"When they tried to force their way through, I took up arms. It was only the knife armed man I meant to struck, but the coward through the other in my sword's path. The desperate move of a coward. Alas, this other man was the keeper of this house, and owner of the woman yonder. The other cut me across the cheek," you show the cut, " before a friend could come to my aid and end him."

"And this friend?" he asked.

"Fled for safety," you say, "They were a Saracen group, and feared reprisal for slaying one of their own."

"Hmm, well they might, though Lord Gerard keeps all to just law Muslim and Christian alike. Well enough said," he nodded, "It sounds like self-defense, all within the bounds of the law and you should be fine. A case before the court shouldn't be necessary." He did not leave however.

A fat finger was jabbed in Chihirizahd's direction. "That could be trouble however. The family of the owner might claim ownership and have her killed as proxy for the death of her owner. And I might well let that happen to keep the peace."

He nodded to himself. "Though that is not justice. Perhaps I can make a claim, that you had purchased her legally the night before. For a sum of twenty pfennings?"

He reaches a hand out and grins.

Just take notice that of >>34544395
The merchant's family should pay for funeral rites and damages.

So what are we going to do with Chihirizadh? We can't just let her leave because she's going to get targeted by the innkeper's family anyway. It's probably not kosher to whore her out for extra money. We can't really bring her with us to our campaign.

Maybe it's time to find a permanent, yet modest housing in the city?
>>
>>34544349
Agreed. It never pays to piss off the local authorities.

Noble blood can only get you so far after all.

You produce the coins and place them in Leon's palm.

"Well meeting you Master Grenier," you say. The man nods as he slips the coins into a purse.

"And well meeting you Sir Wilhelm, don't be a stranger now. If you need me, come by the courts and we might have ourselves an association. This money might flow back towards a useful man, if he knows the way of things."

When he leaves with his men-at-arms the slave girl wastes no time and flings herself at you, her arms wrapped about your neck.

"Thank you master, thank you!" real tears trickled from her eyes, "I will serve you well, I will not be disobedient. I promise."

> acquired Chirihizadh

You untangle the girl from around your neck.

Personally, I'd say just keep the girl around as a personal servant, teach her to dress wounds and do basic tasks if she doesn't know it already.
She's going to end up in exactly the same situation as she was before if she were free, best case scenario she joins the hospitaller or somesuch, but that's not likely to happen at all.
Besides, having a mildly attractive woman on your hand always brings a sheen onto things, especially in balls and official places.
>>
>>34544769
We are Cao Bei! We just need to find a balance.
Also get Orlando to use his contacts for work and a place to stay.
>>
>>34544754
This fella has the right of it, why if we wanted to we could even make her into an assiaain or body guard.

Or at the very least someone to help take care of the day to day chores with our little brother and converted jew brother.

>This fella has the right of it, why if we wanted to we could even make her into an assiaain or body guard.

Yeah, a Muslim girl joining the hospitalier is pretty unlikely. I don't see it as anywhere close to best case scenario honestly.

Her being our personal servant is much more valuable than losing her for no gain.
>>
>>34544782
>>34544796
Yep. We plan on being a lord eventually, having the first member of our household now is no big deal. We can teach her things to be useful for stuff besides sex - intrigue, medicine, whatever.
>>
>>34544796
>assiaain or body guard
Honestly I think a cook or seamstress or intel operative would be more useful and more likely.
>>
Here's what Im thinking

>Free her but keep her on as a servant
>''convert'' her to christianity teach her the right words etc
>see what her skills are
>go in the natural direction from there
>>
>>34544866
>>34544851
>>34544834
Well at the very least I want her to know how to use a dagger since we can't always be there to be the knight in shining armor as it were. Better she knows how to stick the other guy then just get slaughtered by our enemies.

Also trying to catch up with what happened last time, seriosuly stright up murdering a guy? The hell hapenned?
>>
You decide to leave off any plans and spend your morning looking for a distraction. It wasn't every day you killed a man, least of all one unarmed. You find a place serving beer and settle down for a couple drinks with your men.

As you wash back your first you overhear a conversation.

"Have you heard?" a man said, "Count Hugh was here just last week calling on Lord Gerard. It's rebellion, it is in the air."

"Lord Gerard and King Fulk are not friends, but Lord Gerard's brother is Prince of Galilee, and he'll not take up arms against kin."

"What reason has Count Hugh to rebel?"

"I hear he is sleeping with his cousin the Queen, and seeks to make her paramount. With that he'll use her to take more land for his own. You know young Baldwin is his, not Fulk's?"

"Maybe. Word has he speaks with the Muslims as well, and has offered them land should they back his plans."

You could not see who was talking in the gloom, and as you look the gossiping petered off. You had been told an envoy of Count Hugh of Jaffa had been in Sidon, but this talk of rebellion was new.

"Aye," Solomon announces, "Aye, Wilhelm, I'm going to take a short trip to check on my horse. Hope the villagers have not sold him or worse. I should be gone only a day or two. Like to miss your trial."

"Froggy", Orlando's buddy. Sir Matthias is his official name, I think. Definitely ask Orlando to introduce us to Sir Matthias and Lady Lucca.
>>

If we're planning to do that we should pay attention to this Rebellion if it comes to a head so we can do it right instead of ending up in the gallows

You know Sir Matthias and his son, also named Matthias.
You've made a connection with Constable Leon

Friend might have been too strong a word.

>>
You decide to lean on your new friend Orlando, and ask him to introduce you to Sir Matthias.

And its up a familiar street he leads you, to a familiar door. He knocks and out of a window above shoots the firey hair of Lady Jehanne. Her hair is unbound and uncovered, forming a ragged mane. She looked tired and pale.

"Sir Orlando and...oh," she leaned more fully out the window, "Have you come to call upon the Lord of the House, or my Lord Husband?" she asked. She had a scrubbing brush in hand dripping with suds.

"Your Lord Husband, but both would be welcome my lady," Orlando replied.

"I shall send him down at once," she said, disappearing back inside with a small wave.

It was soon enough that the door was opened by an unfamiliar house servant and Sir Matthias the Younger came walking out. He really did look like a frog, with his skinny legs and fat belly, the broad face with thick lips.

He had a frown that turned into a smile. "Ah, Orlando!" they hugged, and when they separated he turned to you. "I feel we've met before, sir." He extended a hand to you.

"Sir Wilhelm, I escorted your wife from Acre," you say.

"Ah, yes. Not sure if it's thanks you should have from me or a drumming. She can be quite the terror," he said. Jehanne leaned in the doorway behind her husband. She was dressed in simple garb, dirt tracked around the knees of her dress. She tips out a bucket into the gutter and wipes sweat from her brow.

Still she gives you a smile in particular.

"And what is this call about, social or....?" Sir Froggy looked 'tween you and Orlando expectantly.

We may be a Bard Knight, but at least we know how to keep up with social niceties. Just straight up asking for work makes us look like someone desperately grasping for straws like a hobo. Starting as a social makes us appear in control of our lives and grants us the illusion of calm.

"Just here to make an acquaintance," you say, "I've few friends in Sidon, but would like more. You seem a good sort, and Orlando speaks well of you."

"He flatters," Sir Froggy said, "Come in then, a friend of Orlando is a friend of mine. I'll have the wife bring us some wine." He slapped Jehanne on the rump as he passed.

The house of Sir Matthias was not large, but it was built on two floors and was well decorated. Religious art ringed the ceiling, the saints at prayer or so you assumed. He directed you to sit, and had a bowl of nuts and dates to eat.

"Your man I think will be more comfortable in the backyard," he said, sniffing at Franz. You instruct Franz to follow one of the house servants out the back, leaving you with Orlando and Froggy. Welf loomed in the corner. The man was so quite it was easy to forget he was there.

Jehanne arrived with pitchers and cups, serving you each a generous serving.

Froggy ran a hand along the inside of her thigh.

"Aye, she's learning," he said, "Soon enough she'll make a good wife and a good mother." He rubbed her belly with a grin. "I cannot wait for her to plump up. She's still far too skinny." He sends her off with another slap to the rump. "Leave the men to talk woman, there's still cleaning that needs doing upstairs."

"Surely you have servants to do the cleaning?" you say as Jehanne disappeared.

"Oh, they have other duties, and its good to get the wife working. A husband must keep his wife disciplined lest she get ideas. It's all in a book I read by the Bishop of Pontiers," he said. "And I tell you, that woman needs to learn discipline, and how to discipline others. I had to dismiss her maid, she was so lazy on the girl. Why I caught them exchanging dresses one day. That was the last of that. Bah, good riddance."

He takes up a cup and raises it. "Gentlemen," he said.

Thinking like modern folks kind of caused us to fuck up badly in TKQ.

"To you Sir Matthias, a generous host," you drink and the others drink with you.

"Ah, a good vintage," Matthias smacked his lips. "My father has connections with the Italian quarter, we're gifted a bottle from near every shipment. It's a good friendship to have."

He ate some dates, smacking his lips loudly as he ate.

"So, I hear you've had some adventures Orlando. Come tell me a little. All I hear is gossip from clucking hens. Would that I'd ridden with you and been able to speak of them myself."

Orlando looked queasy. "There's little to tell."

"Sure there is something though," Froggy insisted.

"I think others would be better story tellers," he says, deliberately looking in your direction.

"I can speak to some of that," you say, "It is where our friendship began, under Orlando's captainship." You lean forward and spread your hands out. "A muster was called for by Lord Gerard, to deal with bandits who were harassing the poorfolk of the northern pastures. Aye, a small but mighty host was brought together. Unfortunately there was a rotten core to it. Normans under Sir Blaise who were not looking for justice but rather plunder. No better than bandits themselves. It was well in our adventure when they broke from our ranks to raise havoc, and it was only the discipline of good men that kept them from running wild entirely. I myself was injured in that fighting, the villain himself near killing me."

The crowd draws in, Sir Froggy nodding his head along. Jehanne listened from the doorway, entranced by your tale.

"After we had dismissed the Normans from our company we continued on to face the bandits. Sir Orlando proved himself a true knight in that action, cutting down a number of their best fighters. Sir Welf can speak of his valour. We took the bandit leader in chains, and it was Sir Orlando that presented him to Lord Gerard."

Froggy all but bounced in his chair, as if he were riding out against the bandits himself.

"Bad fortune however, the villain Sir Blaise had returned to Sidon and placed himself well in Gerard's court. Dripped poison against Sir Orlando that saw him unjustly punished for valiant deeds."

Froggy and Jehanne both winced, with Froggy punching the arm of his chair.

"Stripped of possessions and land, left to be a knight-errant. It is for bringing peace to the country that our friend now finds himself in poor position."

"Bah!" Froggy snarled, "No good deed goes unpunished!" He slapped his knee. "Why you should have come to father immediately. We shall arrange a petition with the High Court in Jerusalem and see your lands reinstated!"

He bobbed his head. "Yes, the best lawyers will be on this. Lord Gerard continues to go too far!"

"Wife, you wait on the man as if he were your husband," Sir Froggy says with a chuckle, "Come refill my cup and begone with you. You've had stories enough for one day and chores still to finish." She filled his cup and left. You watched her leave.

"Aye, see how I am soft on her?" he said, "But I could not bear to mar such soft white skin. It did not break my heart to give her old maid a slight bruising, her skin absorbed the colour well, but even that did not bridled the woman. Ah, disobedient women. What woman isn't though, eh?"

He finished his drink.

"Now I see you are a man of some martial inclination, perhaps you could do a favour for me. My father has been cheated by a merchant, and it would be good if he were punished some. Nothing major, a broken finger or two. You'll find some money in it for you, if you've interest."

"Fair enough, perhaps another time and a different venture," he says.

Your visit has run on a little late. "Well, it was a pleasure to meet you properly Wilhelm," Froggy said, shaking you by the hand, "And Orlando, do call on father when you can. You have our utmost support in your case. If you have a chance, head to Jerusalem yourself. This is most certainly a matter for the High Court, and should be dealt with quickly. Our Lord is grown too greedy of late."

He sees you and all your companions off.

"Don't be a stranger," he said, waving you away. As you leave you catch sight of Jehanne in the window, her gaze following you for a moment before the shutters closed.

You were not sure if you quite liked Sir Froggy, but could find no real problems with his hospitality. Sir Orlando seemed pleased with the run of the visit.

Chihirizahd came and walked a step behind you, enjoying the sky above.

"It was rare I should be allowed outside," she said, "I much prefer it. You should not grumble such Master Franz, there are worse things then a tidy yard with a bright clear sky."

You recall another friend of Orlando's. Lady Lucca.

"Oh yes, my dear Lady Lucca," Orlando smiles, "Yes, that would be good. If she is taking visitors. She is a very busy woman, taken to this and that with much demands on her time."

And while you plan to go there you take Franz aside.

"Would you ask around about Neomi?" you say, "It's not that I would seek her out but...well I worry she might be in a bad way."

Franz nodded. "If she can be found I'll find her. Had enough of dealing with nobles for one day."

He gives you a small salute and drifts off in a separate direction.

"My Lady Lucca is in the Genovese district. Light steps there, they rule themselves and our Lord has little authority to interfere."

It was a closed off part of the city you were permitted into, a very handsome section of the harbour. Sailors and merchantmen were in evidence, and they seemed in the midst of some celebration, drinking in the street. Whores called out as you passed, openly displaying their goods from window sills. It was a very different air from the rest of the city.

"She is in here," Orlando leads you through a tight alley that led up to a tall building, a tower in truth. He knocked once and the door was opened by a beautiful young woman with dirty blond hair.

"Orlando!" she kissed him on the scar on his lip, "Welcome back."

"Jessica," he replied, bowing, "Is your aunt home?"

"Oh but she's engaged," she said, inviting you all in, "It shouldn't be much longer, Sir Jean is a quick one."

It was a well furnished sitting room, with a painting of Mother Mary on one wall and St Michael on the other.

Jessica helped you each with your boots and placed them by the doorway, fetched a bowl of water to wash your feet.

"My brother James should be out shortly too," she said, "If that's your interest." She winked at you.

Soon enough a very satisfied looking old man appeared out of a doorway.

A shapely woman of early forties bid him out in thick french.

"Well now, I see a stranger," she extended to ou a hand to kiss and she said in fluent German, "What brings you to the Holy Land?"

You kiss her hand. "Where else is there to be?" you say.

"Where else indeed," she replied, still in German. "You are from....Trier, correct? No, but perhaps close. Yes. Along the Rhine some where." Her eyes darted over to Welf and her smile grew. "And what interesting company you keep." She bowed before him and said something in...was it Swabian? You only understood some of that dialect.

"Hnn," was all of Welf's reply, though he stood and retreated into the corner of the room as a result.

"Well," she said in Latin, "Well what a nice little group. So good to see Orlando with more friends."

And she sat in the seat Welf had vacated.

"Tell me sir, and tell it true, did you take Lady Jehannes' maiden head while escorting her to her own wedding?" she asked in German.

"Oh, I would not say of no standing what so ever," her fingers danced along your forearm.

Jessica returned with another girl in tow. She wore a simply dress meant for working, and her hair had been cut ridiculously short like a nun's, but there was no mistaking Neomi.

"My newest niece," she said, gesturing off to her, "I think we are much alike in some respects. We are both collectors of interesting people. Now what we use them for might be very different. Tell me, what do you really want out of the Holy Land?"

"What do I really want?" that's a big question. "What do I really want?" You hold out your hand and make a claw, envisioning all your futures in the palm of your hand. Money, power, women, land, war. Kingdoms rising and falling before you. The dream of power, the dream of glory.

"I want what only can be won, I want all that I can get with my own two hands. I want power and glory. I want land, land enough that a king would shudder. Money to make even the kings of Cathay weep. And an influence that even popes would fear me."

You look up to her, match her gaze. She watches you, eyes bright and smile wide, chest rising in exultation.

"What do I want? Everything. I want everything."

She claps. "We really are alike," she said. She leaned over and kissed your hand. "No one can promise everything, but I can promise much. If you will help me. It is not a big favour, though it may lead to big things. I want you to go to Jerusalem for me. Not now, but soon, and deliver a message to Queen Melisende. Very discreetly. Do this for me, and locked doors may open for you," she rose from her chair and smoothed her skirts, looked down at you waiting for a reply.

"Let it be so," you say, "I will deliver your message to the queen."

Lucca tapped her lips. "Then that is the very last we will speak of this. The message shall come through one known to you when you reach the city. Some time in this next month, ah, it must be before the beginning of Easter. No later than that or all is wasted. That is all."

She clapped her hands and some more people appeared, men and women.

"Meet my family Wilhelm, my nieces and nephews, and if its your interests take one for the night."

"You are very generous Lady Lucca, but no," your words have her head arching and eyes blinking in clear surprise, "I have other tasks that require my attention. Your family, as lovely as it is, will have to do without me."

Her surprise turned into a smile and a clean laugh.

"Why Sir Wilhelm, never be a stranger," she said, stepping up to tip-toes to kiss you on either cheek. "When you are ready we must certainly arrange something special."

"And I look forward to calling on you again. To continue our conversation, and other things."

She sees you and your companions out the door, sans Orlando who is taken away by his own lust into a backroom, calling out a 'see you on the morrow' as a giggling Jessica pulled him away.

Now it remained just you, Welf and Chihirizahd.

You buy a harp from one craftsman and give it a pluck. It's notes are clear and sweet. Next you see a clothes stall and purchase a new set made of fine silk.

Turning aside from pleasant feast day wear you buy a good helm with a hinged face plate. The merchant raps the plate with a knuckle and promises it could stop 'near anything, god willing'.

Fifty three pfennings are fished out, but the merchant selling the harp is willing to trade for your extra saddle. Instead its only twenty eight pfennings for a day's trading.

You think again of that lion skin, but for a good tailor to work it you would need to come to the markets early. The very finest craftsmen are already packed away for the afternoon.

With nothing else pressing you need to find lodging for the night.

By the time you get there it is quite dark, and drunks are out howling around the docks. Chihirizahd clings to your arm while Welf keeps a cautious eye on every shadow. You reach the place safely though, and are admitted by a sleep eyed young man with an open vest.

"I'm afraid my aunt has been called away," he said, "She's a very busy woman."

"We're just looking for a room, she knows us," you say.

"Hmm," he purses his lips, cocks his hips, "Well this isn't an inn, this is the Lady's private residence. But for a night, if you do know her..."

"Ten is a bit steep," you say, "Surely we can come to some kind of accommodation." The young man considers you for a second with a sly grin. "Some kind of reasonable accommodation," you reiterate.

You hand over the five pfennings with a minimum of grumbling. He grins and it disappears into his cod piece.

"Follow me," he says with a sashay of his hips.

He lads you through the house, giving you a few small glimpses of ongoing titillation. At one point a one armed man all covered in grease came bursting out of a room and disappeared down a hallway laughing madly, chased by a trio of young women wearing antlers.

"Huh," Welf muttered, scratching his neck.

It certainly was a strange place, the sounds of love making well muffled but still audible. You note the act in many voices, false delight put on for paying customers, but you hear no cries of anguish or upset as you had at other dens of lasciviousness you had frequented over the years.

"And here you are," some spare pallets by an oven. You had slept better on the road. He grins and disappears. A couple of servants are curled up already like cats, napping restfully.

Welf takes up in the corner of the room, axe out and over his lap, a whetstone working the edge.

Chihirizahd however swam up into your arms, draped her head across your chest, one hand on your hip, the other n your lap. It was a practiced, routine position.

It occurred to you that you knew nothing of this girl aside from her name.

"Ey, Chihirizahd," you say, "How long have you been a slave?"

She shrugged. "I was taken young," she said, "I must have been...I am not sure. What are years when you do not have days?" She drew out the crucifix around your neck, entwined the chain around her fingers. "I remember living in a valley with an older man. A husband I think. I was quite young for marriage but my father had no sons and an embarrassment of daughters. He was not so bad, this man, but when they came he could do little but...die I suppose."

She had a very distant look in her eye.

"They said we deserved it because we worshiped the devil. I do not know what that means. The sacred fire they put out with their piss and the priest they stalked in the ash. Then they took us away."

She was lost in the gleam of the little metal cross.

"Why do you care for where one such as I came from?" she asked, battering her eyelashes up at you, "Surely we could do something much more entertaining then talk." She released the cross and twinned her fingers through your hair.

"I like to know the story of my comrades, and my servants," you say, taking her hand in yours. She had very soft hands. "Do you know any skills?"

"I think you know where my skills lay," she said with a smile, pulling herself into your lap. She ground against you subtly, just the slightest twitch of her rear. "I am trained to dance as well, for the pleasure of men. I am trained to pleasure women too, should it be asked of me. Would you like to watch me pleasure a woman?" the twitch against her made her laugh. "I think you would."

"But what of things outside that?" you ask, "Surely you know things beyond bedroom play."

"I-" she blinked at you, ceasing in her circular motions. "There was a time I rode horses," she said, dropping between your knees to sit on the floor, "A leather glove and a falcon. We would just the three of us, go out into the mountains and catch rabbits. Other little things. There was a fox once, its fur pleased my husband." She ran her hands upon her shoulders. "And I spoke a different language then, I have had to speak many different tongues very quickly."

She ran a hand over your knee. "I once had a young noble man of Oman teach me letters. It was a game for him I think. He taught me numbers too, until his wife forced him to sell me. She did not like me, that wrinkled woman. He liked me much, would kiss me should I do well in my lessons. He kissed me often."

She leaned against your chest and looked up at you.

"No man has ever fought for me before," she said, running her hands over your knees, "You were the first, my very first."

It seems like fairly intelligent and well-educated. She knows different languages, letters (presumably can write), and arithmetic.

She also seems to be a quick study as well.

I don't know if we can take her to court (is that even appropriate?), but we could certainly use her intelligence in several different capacities.
>>
You wrap your arms around her, hold her against your chest. Her quivering subsided, her tears were blinked away. She leaned into your hug and was soon asleep in your arms. You soon slept as well, holding her there against the kitchen oven.

You dreamed that night about a storm sweeping off the sea. There was no thunder but lighting flared. You saw people, mostly women, scream as a great wave crashed over the walls. You saw the castle become a sea of its own, and you saw faces in the water, drowned faces staring up at you, fish streaming through the dark blonde hair, nibbling on their large, blue eyes. Her large blue eyes, with full lips open and drinking in the deep dark waters.

You face as you had that day, vanishing away from you as she was pulled under the waters of the Rhine.

You are awoken by a poke to the side of the head.

"Sir Wilhelm," it was Neomi.

The dream was fast retreating. Chihirizahd still slept in your arms.

"The day awaits Sir Wilhelm, and you are called to court," she said, offering you a platter of bread and nuts.

Court, ah yes.

"My thanks Neomi," you give her a kiss as you take the plate and she leaves in a fluster.

Welf and Chihirizahd seem in fine spirits that morning. Chihirizahd hums a foreign song as she combs out and does up her hair while Welf checks his arms are secure.

You decide it best to gather your companions if you can before going to court. It's not just your day in court, today was Sigfrod's, and you hoped to win him release into your service.

Orlando is the easiest to find. You extricate him from between Jessica's inviting bosom and though he laments his freedom but briefly, soon enough he is merrily trotting beside you.

Outside the Italian quarter you find Franz. Franz, who was hoofing about mad as hell.

"No luck sir, the maid has vanished," he said, "God keep her safe, whatever foulness she might have fallen into."

You laugh and when you tell him why his scowl is furious. "Well never fucking mind," he mutters, falling in.

Solomon and Hugo you do not have time to wait for. They are not at the hospitaller's cloister, nor at the gates to Tyre. You could wait, but circumstance could see them arrive in the evening or even on the morrow. You had no choice but to head to court without them.

The courts were not kept in the fortress. Some feudal lords did that back in Europe, but here they were kept in an old roman building before a magistrate. A thief was being tried for stealing a bolt of silk, the punishment a chopping off of the offending hand. Another was a civil dispute between two brothers over the ownership of a hunting dog left in their father's will.

Sigfrod was being judged by the Lord of Sidon however, and a big spectacle was being made of it. A crowd was gathered to see justice done.

Lord Gerard and a collection of noble anger ons had assembled themselves at one side of the room, a crowd of the common folk at the other. You left your men in that large crowd of rabble and stepped forth.

You stood between the crowd and the chained man. The giant grinned at the sight of you, jangling his chains.

"Well met sir," he said, "For a moment I thought you might have taken to a different action."

"I keep my word," you replied. To the crowd and the owlish lord you called. "I stand as defense for this man, and will speak on his behalf."

The crowd was a stir at that.

"Sir Wilhelm, how unexpected," Lord Gerard said. He sat a throne with a sword of justice across his knee. Constable Leon was at one side, the chancellor at the other. "You brought this man in yourself, and now you speak for him, what is your game?" He spoke so his voice carried across the audience.

"I have no game but justice my lord," you reply.

Lord Gerard nodded. "Very well, I shall allow it," he said.

"Now, let the case be made, and let justice by done in the eyes of God," an old priest said in rough latin.

We have been rolling pretty well throughout the entire thread intill now. Kinda suprised how long it lasted
>>
>>34552137

I'm crap at dialogue, so I'm not even going to try.

Here are some brief arguments/thoughts though:

1. Start off by saying that though this man was a lowly bandit, he is a Christian who is capable of redemption.

2. Recount stories of how he fiercely fought for his brothers and attempted to save their lives with his own. Of how he didn't give a second thought to his own life. (Basically going with the whole virtue while also enticing the Lord with tales of a strong warrior)

3. How his life should be spared so that he can redeem himself and suggesting that he be put to use as a soldier so that his might can be used for good.
>>
>>34552178
Hmm, obviously we don't want to go full on flattery, Lord Gerard has proven that he prefers results and pragmatism rather than flowery language.

The fact that he takes Templar vows seriously also proves that for whatever his vices, he considers himself quite a devout or even zealous man.

So maybe we should argue that this man fell from Christ's gaze and merely needs a steady but fair hand to return to Him. A hand that only we can provide, given that we bested him on the field of battle?
>>
"This man is a bandit," you say, "None deny that fact."

"Then what case is there to be made?" Lord Gerard asked, drumming the blade of the sword.

"Because this man is also a Christian," you continue, "And one of the tenants of Christianity is love and forgiveness. This man has seen the error of his ways. I say in his heart he is a good man, with much left to do on this earth."

"This is not a church of canon law," Gerard interrupted, "we are a secular authority. Make your arguments in the bounds of the law and save your pleas of Christian brotherhood for that. If the man repents God shall forgive him, but that does not absolve his crimes or his punishments. If they did, every criminal would cry 'redemption' and be set free."

Ah, that was more or less the crux of your argument.

>>34552218

Fuck it, his guilt has already been established. The prima facie case has already been made, we need to talk about mitigating factors now.

Mitigating factors are his valor and how he was willing to accept punishment for his brothers. (Just say that we executed his brothers regardless) How his might would be put to use on the ships or as a soldier.

Basically save him from death.

Agreed.

We aren't arguing that he isn't guilty, that is clear. We are merely arguing in favor of a lesser punishment (such as lashes or slavery). instead of death.
>>
We might not be able to get him, but fuck it, we're going to try our best to save him from death.

Where there's life, there's hope. We might even be able to buy him from slavery now or later.
>>
"Then consider, Lord Gerard, his valour," you say, "Against armour knights he stood and fought, rallying men about him. He fought like a lion. And consider also his sense of reason. In exchange for his brothers' lives he threw down his own arms and surrendered, knowing he would face the noose. All to save those he loved dearly. I say as one that captured him, if he wished he could have made a bloody scrap of it, and possibly slain a number in his escape. But his love for his brothers-in-arms came first. Think of what such a man might be if given to serve a true lord, and sent out against real foes."

You think you've seen something shift in Lord Gerard's eyes, but he slowly shakes his head.

"Valour is also laudable, and a strong arm needed in these violent times, but I cannot give a known bandit up to freedom on valour alone. You've spoken well this day Sir, you had no need to do speak at all, but I'm afraid the law is clear. Sigfrod must be punished for his crimes."

Lord Gerard stood. "I pass sentence, that Sigfrod shall serve no less than five years in the galleys. That if he should break any other law in that time his execution shall be swift and immediate. This is my judgement, be grateful it is not worse."

He sits back down and men-at-arms come together to drag Sigfrod away.

"My thanks for your efforts Sir Wilhelm!" he calls after you, "At least I yet live!"

"This court is adjourned," the Lord said.

Well you might have liked a better outcome, but the case was clear from the beginning. Sigfrod was guilty, with no shield against justice save a good sword arm. Perhaps that had spared him the noose. Perhaps it had been your arguments.

Next is your own trial, which really was a formality. You were in and out in a matter of minutes.

And that was all the tasks that pressed you. A poor Sigfrod, you think he might have made a valiant comrade.

"Come, let's go drink," Franz said.

"Tough day at court?" a man sits across from you, handing you a drink. "I saw you speak. You did the best possible, the crowd was certainly starting to drift in your favour." He's a skinny man, no warrior though he has sword and buckler at his hip.

"And you are?" you ask.

"Joshua," he said, "Just your local Jewish busy body."

"And what do you want, Joshua?" you ask, drinking the beer he'd brought you.

He shrugged. "Money, a better looking wife, a bigger dick, lots of things," he leaned across the table, "The thing is, mostly, I want King Fulk to know how Lord Gerard really handles things around here. Problem is, as a Jew I'm bared from going to Jerusalem. So I've been looking for a Christian advocate. Lord Gerard has been extorting the Jewish community for years. He has stolen our money. he's a odd man
>>
>>34552645
>He shrugged. "Clarity," was his only response. He raised a hand to shield his eyes. He had an oddness about his eyes, a wateriness that seemed deep with grief.

>"Saxony," was his reply. He had a look of deep reflection for a moment. Then shook his head. "No family, just this." He patted his axe.

Something traumatic probably happened in his past, but I don' think he's a simpleton.

What was there to make of Welf? He was a strange sort, very quiet. One might think he was touched in the head.

"You don't talk much," you said.

"Words...struggle," he puffed out his cheeks and looked downcast. He pulled out a bit of parchment from a pouch, and a quill with ink. He wrote a little, in a good hand. 'Tis hard for me to speak,' he wrote, 'the words, they crowd my tongue and get confused'. He turned the parchment over. 'I do not know why'. And he was out of parchment from there. He turned away from you with his drink, and downed it all very quickly.

"Mayhap there is an answer," you say, "Like one of the shrines to the Virgin Mary or one of the saints, the birth place of Jesus. Many have been cured of illness by visiting these places and receiving a blessing."

Welf shuffled his feet and nodded.

"Is that what brought you to the holyland originally?"

He looked over his shoulder and tried to speak, but the pain in his eyes made him stop. He shrugged.

"We could visit one of these shrines, in time," you said.

Welf just nodded, his head hanging low.

"You enjoying your time out here old man?" you ask Franz. He was glaring at nothing while he drank. Old Oak had been this sort of surly 'say little' for as long as you could remember. He had served your father once, and been baptized by the Arch-Bishop of Trier personally after dragging your father out of a burning siege tower.

"I say are you enjoying the holy land Franz?" you repeated the question. He blinked.

"Eh, it's too fucking hot out here," he said, "And everyone speaks some bastard language I don't understand. All 'blah blah blah' in a different accent. Too many fucking Frenchmen in particular."

"But plenty of Frenchwomen too," you say.

Franz blows a raspberry. "Aye, which you take as easy as if your cock were baited. A good looking lad like you has his pick, but for an old lump of wood like me, eh," he drinks, "what good are women anyway? I can sew and cook better 'en any of them anyway."

"But the adventure, Franz, the adventure!"

"Ah fee and foe on adventure," he slapped his knee, "Give me a cabin in the woods with plenty of fresh water and game to hunt. That's enough adventure as I need."

"When we were in Germany, you complained about Germany," you said, "Now that we are here, you complain about here. Are you never happy sir?"

He turned an eye on you. "I was happy, aye, when I saw you standing after fighting that monster of a Norman. And happier still, when you returned alive from fighting those bandits. I have my moments of happiness lad, don't think I'm all sour," he cuffed you around the ear.

With that Joshua returned with a bulging pursue. He came up quick and with it held close.

"84 pfennings," he said, "But I beg you, leave as quick as you can. On the morrow."

You take the coin and put it away.

You head out to the horse traders. Its just out the north gate of town, an area filthy with corralled, stomping horses, loud with the sound of their crying and whinnying. Bedouin children run about barefoot in the dust, laughing as they played their children's games. You approach a pen in particular and a group of swarthy, turbaned men.

"You look to buy horse?" one said, "I am Hassan, and these are my horse. You get good deal on good horse."

"You ask too much," you say, "I know good horse flesh. You ask too much by far." You make an offer and receive a sneer, but the counter offer still knocks some pfennings off the price.

You hand out 125 pfennings for two horses, a quick footed little hobby and a stable looking rounsey. The Bedouin man checks your coins carefully before nodding in satisfaction.

"You need new horse you come by Hassan's stall, we treat you right," he slapped you on the cheek affectionately, showing his crooked teeth in a broad grin.

You give the palfrey for Franz to ride.

"Good to be off my damn feet," he said, climbing up onto it.

And the hobby is a planned gift for your loyal squire.

You head to the markets to find a craftsman. You'd had an idea burning in your brain since you'd first killed that lion. Inspired by the old stories of Hercules. And you meant to see it come true.

You found a man who worked in animal skins and presented to him your lion pelt and enclosed helm.

He looks it over, fingering the pelt, knuckling the steel helm.

"It can be done, though I've no idea why you'd want to," he said, "Should only take a night. Say for 'bout twenty pfennings?"
