"I knew it! I'm not crazy!" Camille says with a kind of joy in her voice.

She may be right about this whole village thing, but you're not entirely convinced of her proclamation of sanity.

You are Jack Albator, intrepid daredevil, swift opportunist, and now keen private eye. Hot on the latest case of the disappearing villagers, you scour the crime scene in your investigation.

The village you find yourself in is completely devoid of any intelligent life, besides you that is.
This place was once a lively attraction for all the farmers and merchants in the area just before sundown. Yet, when your motley crew arrived; you found only the fresh footprints and signs of the denizens who were once here. Yuuki and Aligot have been busying themselves with extinguishing the small fires that have spouted up from the unattended grills and ovens. Which were still alight from the evening dinner preparations.

Camille, Fritelli, the wayward Gallete knights, and you all have been busy scanning the area for clues about their disappearance. If this was the result of an evacuation due to the demon attack, then it's cause for concern as none of the villagers have returned to their homes yet.

Aligot has his attention on something else, though.
"Jack! Your foot is on fire!"
"My..."
You look down at your feet, a fiery red glow appears to have spouted under your right foot. Leaping off of it, you notice that the glow is not unlike that of glowing embers. Tracing the glowing pattern along in the sand, you notice that it forms a straight line.

Aligot grabs several brooms from the shops, and your party starts sweeping the dust and dirt coating of the village floor. Slowly more parts of it becomes visible, like the outer ring of the circle as well as lots of smaller runes and engravings.

>Detective Jack Albator; from this information, what do you think happened to the Villagers?

And

>Keep investigating

You keep poking and prodding around the village further, finding more parts of the circle.

Soon, the entire circle and all of it's sub-circles are revealed. As well as a bunch of squiggles and drawings near the center of the village.
Your party gathers near the edges as Aligot finds a vantage point on top of one of the venues.

"What do you see?" Fritelli yells up at him, Camille seems to be keeping her distance from the perimeter of the circle.
"It's a magic circle, Lass."
"I think it's-"

Aligot is shocked, he looks like he could almost fall right off the top of the booth he's standing on.
"How do you know that, Jack?"
"Aw, the merchant ships that had missionaries on them would carry books on this stuff. Books on things like the differences in demons, devils, witches, witch-demon, devil-witches, and-"
"T-that's enough, Jack." Aligot's face clearly paled somewhere between 'devils' and 'witch-devils'.

"Probably blood sacrifice, I read a book that was all about those dark things. It maybe a witch-demon summoning a devil-witch, I tells you."
"Jack! Please!"

"What? I'm just talking about devil-witches." you think to yourself.

Something slowly draws into focus in front of your face.
It's almost dancing with a shiver. It's a long, fuzzy strand of yellow.
Odette, one of the Gallete knights, has slowly slinked toward you during your description. She's wearing some baggy clothes she borrowed from her brother, and your barrier jacket. So there's no reason for her to be cold.

You can hear her mutter, "y-you mean th-there's s-someth.. something.. arou.. demon-witches.."

Her tail continues to slowly tremble in your face.

"EEEK!"
Antonin, Odette's brother, immediately jumps into action.
And then loosens his posture when he sees you stroking his sisters long catlike tail.

"W-What are you doing?! Don't scare me like that!" She turns around and punches you several times.
You continue to pet her tail, it's much more stiff and flexible than the other tails that you're used to.
"Seriously Jack, I think you planned for that to happen." Her brother sheathes his sword with a sigh.

"In any case" Camille still refusing to set foot inside the circle, "If this was a sacrifice, it didn't happen here. No one died in this village."
She takes out another slip of paper from her garmets and throws it. It ignites with a blue flame, illuminating the villages as it floats gracefully through.
"See that? That's sort of a family trick, but it detects if people have died recently."

"Then, maybe they were taken somewhere else for it?" You say, walking back into the circle.
"If that's true, what's this circle for?"

Your party stands in silence for a minute, but Aligot speaks up a minute later.
"Jack, I think you're onto something here."

He points toward a section of the circle and jumps down. Running over to it, he takes out a notepad and jots something down.
"I don't know what these runes are for" He points toward some more scribblings, "But THESE here- I've seen them before in familiar magic. I think your summoning spell had the same ones."

He finishes jotting them down, making sure to note where on the circle they are located and how big the circle is.

"Then.. I must go, the castle needs to know about this." Antonin speaks up, darting toward his bird. His sister clumsily tries to chase after him but trips on her baggy clothes.

>"Hold it, We're going with you, you want an incident report from all of us, right?"

You pick up Odette and dust her off. She tries to bat your hands away, but lets you help her dust off the back of the coat she's wearing.
"I'll take 'er home, Lad. Leave it to me."

He looks at you incredulously for a minute, before turning to Fritelli.
"Make sure she gets back to the castle, okay?"
"Okay!" Fritelli chirps while dusting off another part of the circle.

The next hour or so consist of your party continuing to uncover more of the circle. Aligot uses various lantern spells and magic to craft an exact replica of the circle on the sheet of paper.
At the end, he seems sort of embittered.
"Something is missing from the circle. I think we missed a part of it."

Something is slapping at your hands, you look down and realize that you started petting Odette again without even realizing it.
"Er, well, it is pitch black out here, maybe we should just come back tomorrow."
Camille interrupts, "Better idea, let's all just go to Gallete castle and stay there for the night."

Fritelli looks at Yuuki and speaks up,
"I think Yuuki and I should head back to Biscotti, her princess is probably having a panic attack right now with her suddenly disappearing to go fight a monster." Yuuki looks suddenly worried when Fritelli says that.

You don't think she should be worried, it's not the princess' decision where she goes at night.

Yuuki quietly agrees with Fritelli, only managing a "y-yes, we should."
You try to stop her, "Don't you think if you want to test your boundaries with her, that you should decide where those boundaries are?"
She doesn't want to listen, "That's true, but I also don't want to stress her out when there's no purpose in it. I'll be the one to decide where those boundaries are drawn."

She gives an, admittably cute, bow and walks back toward the birds with Fritelli. You can feel a sort of disdain swell at the very idea of imprisoning yourself in the expectations of other people.

So much disdain that you have started to pet Odelle again, much to her annoyance.

Aligot finishes his preparation work, closing his pocketbook shut with a snap. Your party saddles up and heads toward the castle.

"So, what are we going there for again?" You ask, not entirely sure except to eat and sleep.

"The archmage there is a friend of mine. He knows a LOT more about these circles than I do." Aligot says, yawning.
Camille mimics his yawn, rubbing her eyes slightly. "And I need to tell someone that villagers are disappearing instead of dying. Maybe they can start a search party or something."

You would like to get Odelle opinion, but she's sitting in front of you completely silent. From your angle, you can tell that she's already leaned her head back into your chest and fallen asleep. Her head rolls and lulls against your shoulder as her ears twitch gradually against your shirt. Her tail stays aloft by wrapping around your waist.
You're not sure what time it is, but judging by the position of the moon and the stars; you would say it's just after 1 AM in the morning. Not particulary late for you during shore-leave, but your party probably wakes up a lot earlier than you do.

The lights of the castle draw into sight. Soon there are bored, exhausted guards linings the streets and the walls. Fortunately it's dark enough where none of them can see your face. They wave your party by when they see a sleeping Odelle pressed against your lap.

As well as some off-color comments in the background. You're certain Odelle would probably kill them if she was awake to hear any of those.

I feel it's worth mentioning that humans may no longer grow tails, but we do possess the biological structure to support them. In fact on very rare occasion there are in fact people born with short, hairless tails. None other than the famed Captain Kidd once claimed to have encountered an island inhabited by a tribe of people with such appendages, which he described to be 'the approximate size of an erect penis'. His words, not mine. Hand before God, I can't make this kinda shit up. Still, I think it would be both relevant and in character for Jack to mention this over a few drinks with his crew, as it came from a famous pirate of his world. Just throwing it out there.

Your entourage walks into the castle gate, leaving the birds behind at the entrance. As you walk in, knights wearing all sorts of differing colors walk out the door. Many of them talking about having a party in-town. They seem to have been finally given the go-ahead to leave the castle, and are making the most of it. When you enter the stone hallway, you notice Antonin at the end.

Then you notice that he's talking with an elaborately dressed lady. Beside her is a quaint maid who seems to be taking down notes as he talks. Antonin breaks his conversation and runs over to you when he notices you carrying Odette.

"Glad you honored your word, Jack. Though I would have preferred if she rode with Camille."
"Aw come on, I didn't do anything!"
Much.

He takes her and cradles her in his arms, "She was never able to stay awake for those long rides. I sometimes find her passed-out on Salsa miles away from where she was actually trying to go."
You want to comment on how ridiculously cute that is, but restrain yourself from doing so.
"I'm going to put her to bed, I think the princess wants to speak with you." He says his goodbyes and walks off. The maid breaks away from the elegantly dressed girl as she saunters over.

"Greetings Hero! And Camille! It's been so long, how are you doing?"
Camille laughs as she pulls her into a hug. She breaks the hug to introduce herself properly.
"I am Charlotte Di Gallete. You are welcome to this kingdom at any time."

"Wow her hair looks really soft, and those ears."
You mentally slap yourself, what has come over you recently? Surely it's not lust that's driving you to do these things, is it?

"Jack Albator, at your service." You bow slightly with one hand behind your back. To you, this greeting has always seemed mocking, but you've been told that it is proper.

"And it's good to see you again as well." Aligot says in a professional tone, actually taking initiative this time. The boy really does seem to change when he's doing the thing he considers his job.
"I request the aide of Aubert, he has specia-"
Charlotte interrupts him, "You didn't even have to ask, he's in the library right now if you want him."
Aligot bows properly and excuses himself, walking down the winding hallway and out of sight.

Camille has her smalltalk with Charlotte about things that you're not sure you were listening to. She ceases her chatter to tell Charlotte about the demon attack, what your party found, and to ask one very important question that has been on your mind,
"Charlotte, if you don't mind me asking. There is someone I wanted to see here."
"Certainly! I'll just get out of your hair an-"
"No, no. I wanted to know why we didn't see him today, despite there being a Demon attack."

"I'm sorry Camille, she really can't help us with those things right now. She's..Um."

She tries to find the right words, her hands start kneading the front of her dress.

"What do you mean, 'indisposed'? What happened?"
"Well.. It's a long story, but to make it short; she can't really fight right now. She needs to rest for a while until she can do anything like that."

Down the hall, you can see a room with a set of doors opened. Maids rush in and out of the room carrying buckets of water, food, blankets, towels.

Charlotte continues to walk slowly toward the door. Entering the room, you are greeted with the sight of what is causing such a huge disturbance.

...We're not going to like the answer, are we?
>>
>>34592041
What? Come on is going to be fun!
>>

Unless the answer's "the hero swag got cranked up to max and someone forgot to turn it off", I'm going to assume the hero somehow wound up merging with ever villager, resulting in some unholy, Legion-isque abomination who's every living moment is sheer agony.

...Actually, now I'm kinda hoping it's the previous, 'cause seriously, the latter be messed up, yo.

In the center of the room, illuminated by a lamp and several magic light sources.
Is a bed, on further inspection, you can see someone laying in it.

Charlotte moves ahead, you and Camille follow behind.

You don't have much first-aid experience, you can patch a broken leg, and maybe dredge water out of someone's lungs, but when it comes to actually fixing someone who can not be fixed. You're not great, to say the least.

Especially when it comes to illnesses, you have been taught about who should and shouldn't be let onto a boat. If someone is covered in scabs? Don't let them on the boat. Covered in pox? Throw them in the water. Coughing and hacking black sludge? Burn them, and then yourself just in case.

But there was one particular sickness that had you had been keeping a close eye on, especially considering the recent prevalence of it that you had been reading about in the region of France.

You approach the bed, the first thing you notice is the beet-red blush covering her face. Only eximplified by the white towel covering her brow. Blonde hair spills out from under layers of blankets and moist towels. Pitchers of water and drink surround her bed. On one side of her is a nurse of some kind, showering her in a shimmering green light. The nurse steps away as the princess approaches.

But the thing you notice, first and foremost, the thing that would get this girl thrown into the water at the docks and for the captain to sail off whether everyone was on board or not, was her skin. Beet red around the shoulders, pale as a ghost near her exposed chest. The blankets, bedding, everything the girl is touching is covered in a dense layer of her bodies' moisture.

"The sweating sickness..." You say, with a low pitched growl.

You say it much louder the second time around, causing the room to draw to a halt, "It's the sweating sickness! It spreads through the air! Get out of the room! NOW!"

Actually, on second thought.

This seems like a good place to end on

I think I'll end it here. It's midnight anyway for me.

Thanks everyone for the thread today.

How was my writing this thread?
>>
>>34592270
I'm enraged that you decided to stop there.

I suppose that means your writing is good, and that I'm enjoying the quest.

Faggot.

Considering that they son't know what a 'sweating sickness' is, it is likely that their immune systems would be very weak to it. Unless the dog/cat/whatever in them makes them immune to human diseases.

See you next thread.

Also as a note, >>34590806 was right.
>>
>>34592270
It is good. I know that it was going to be fun!
Thank for runing.
>>
>>34592270
Thanks for the run Announcer, your writing is top notch stuff. If its not too meta to ask, exactly what is the modern term for this 'sweating sickness'?
>>
>>34592363
I did a LOT of research on what the term 'sweating sickness' meant. It apparently referred to several different diseases that were hanging around Europe for several hundred years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweating_sickness

When referring to a french Sweating Sickness, it was in relation to an influenza epidemic that happened several times in the 1800s.

I'm actually sort of worried it would skew the timeline of the quest, but not that worried

I was late getting here, but enjoyed reading it a lot. I look forward to the next installment!
>>
>>34592270

Not bad, glad it wasn't as bad as I thought it was. >>34592220

Now, let's see how bad this is...

...Annnd there's no known cures listed. Fuck. Poor kid. Uh...how good is magic at healing diseases in this world again? 'Cause I don't think she's got long to live.
>>
>>34592488
We'll see
>>
Right, in light of her...situation...all in favor of having Jack doing this one pro bono, just this once next thread?
>>
>>34592510
Sounds like she's extra fucked.
>>
>>34592542
That, or Jack might just be put off my the prospect of the disease spreading to wash his hands of the whole mess.

There's no telling if the disease can spread to the people of this world.
>>
>>34592542

Well, that would depend on whether we can do anything or not.

Because unless we have a handy case of antibiotics laying around somewhere, this is pretty bad.
>>
Archived!

>>34592449
Thank you!

>>34592547
Oh it's fiiiiine or maybe it's not
>>
>>34592488
Good God, If this thing got released it would introduce a totally alien epidemic to this world. Full of inhabitants who have absolutely no acquired immunity to it. I can't wait to see where this goes.
>>
>>34592601
See fun! Just like I was saying.
>>
>>34592648
More fun than this world and its fluffy tails can handle!
>>
>>34592668

Uh, I kind of meant taking her place in the battle for the time being, but looking for a cure for her's fine too.
>>
>>34592793

Well, considering the poor girl's condition, eh, can't expect to be a hero without some charity I guess...
>>
>>34592793
Why not both?
