"The sweating sickness..."

You say it much louder the second time around, causing the room to draw to a halt, "It's the sweating sickness! It spreads through the air! Get out of the room! NOW!"

You are Jack Albator, crafty voyager, master trickster, and now...
Amateur doctor?

The maids, princess, and your fluffy demon hunting companion stand in the stone hallway outside Gallete's makeshift infirmary. Inside, the hero of Gallete lays bedridden in a deep fever.
You have read books on illnesses and the spread thereof, but reading books and diagnosing an illness are two totally different things.

"Listen! What we need to do is establish a quarantine with the patient and only allow a few people to see her at any time! Keep a record on who sees her and-"
"Um, quick question." The princess asks, looking extremely confused.
"Yar?"
"What is 'Quarantine'?"

Uh oh.

"Well, Err, How disease works is that.."
You've read multiple books on disease, but each one has completely differing conclusions as to what spreads it. One theory involved tiny insects, another involved imbalance of the humors, the one you've seen the most involves the poisonous miasma that is created from illed flesh. You would have asked someone about which one is right, but your primary physicians for all of your life have been barbers.

>Dr. Albator, how do you explain the concept of disease to a world that you're not sure even has it?

>"She's breathing poisonous air! Each breath she takes could spread it to anyone standing near her!"
>"Tiny insects! Small seeds have grown in her body that slowly produce spores that float through the air!"
>"The humors! Her imbalance of bodily fluids have created a toxic breeding ground for parasites!"
>"Worms! Lots of microscopic worms dot her skin! There could be some on you right now!"
>"Just trust me on this, please."

Well, it's not exactly how airborne diseases spread, but it's close enough considering Jack comes from an era where humans can't into microbes yet.

Also, this is my first time catching a thread in two weeks, feels good.

"..Is that a toxic miasma, created from the ailments of the flesh, slowly seeps into the air from filthy places like swamps and graveyards. Sometimes the wind carries these poisonous clouds for miles into villages and towns. Making even more people sick, and as they are illed, they too breathe the same toxic fumes."

"..That's."
The princess goes from confused to worried. Camille answers for her,
"Quite a story, Jack. But it also goes against every explanation for sickness we have." She says with a smile, "You're probably just panicking."

"Whar? How do you explain illness, then?"
"Why that's simple!" She laughs.

She walks inside the room and points to something along the doorway,
"What happens is that evil spirits drift about in the world, looking for those whose souls are unprotected. All you have to do is make sure is lock the evil spirit away and wait for it to get bored and leave! And it can't jump to anyone else here, because look-"

You walk inside the doorway, and you see that there is a tiny white string lining the perimeter of the room.

"This white string is made from an enchanted rope, and keeps the spirit from leaping into anyone else who sees her. So everyone in here should be just fine." She says with a smile.

You feel dumbfounded, "And that is what you think creates illness? And that a string is going to prevent it from spreading?"

"Eyup! She probably has a really persistent spirit, so lots of maids need to be constantly showering her with the good remedies of the body, water, food, clean bedding. That sort of stuff."
You can feel your body physically clench, your posture tightens.
"Lass, d-does it have to be 'lots of maids'? Maybe just one or two would be good enough?"
"Nope! She needs lots of positive life energy, evil spirits hate that kind of thing."

Your hands clutch to your head.
"Oh! So you think it's okay to keep treating her?" The princess looks overjoyed by this news.
"Yup! Just be sure to wear white, that repels the bad feelings in her-"
"WAIT! WAIT! HOLD ON!"

You regain your composure, but you are two seconds away from building a raft and paddling as far away from this place as possible.

"..Is there any treatment or anything you had in mind that could possibly relieve this ailment?" This is a magic place, right? It should have magic treatments.

The princess ponders to herself, "There is this mushroom that is supposed to treat fevers and sweating, they use it at the bar in town. I didn't really know if it would work on repelling an evil spirit. But now we must absolutely treat our hero and make sure she does-"
"WAIT!"
"Hmm?"
"Can ye just, keep a few maids feeding her, and not go in yourself?"

She looks really irritated now, "Mr. Albator, if you're suggesting that I cut down on the number of staff tending to her, then you can forget it. She is MY hero, she is my responsibility. If I have to nurse her back to health myself, I would do it without a second thought."

"Then-"

>"I'll go RIGHT NOW to that bar and get those mushrooms, even easing her fever might help her recover faster."

I love the responses you guys have!

So, to recap things to do

>Tell them it's a disease from your world and doesn't behave at all like one from theirs
>That they probably should have realized this sooner
>Get some masks with herbs to keep the poisonous odors out for the maids
>Get the archmage and Aligot to look for a cure disease spell

And going and getting the mushrooms yourself barely edged out finding someone else to do it. You can leave someone here to enforce the quarantine on the room. Someone such as Aligot, perhaps?
Maybe you would want to take Camille with you in case she gets any ideas?

>>
>>34635020

And Camille doesn't believe us anyway, so lets just go get this Mushrooms STAT.

You grab Camille and the princess by the shoulders.
"Listen, both of yers, this. is. important. This isn't a disease from your world, this isn't even anything your world has EVER seen before. In my world, this was the most serious thing that could happen to a village or town, and you're letting your maids go in without a facemask or protective clothing. Aye'm not a doctor, but you need to listen to me just. this. once."

Camille doesn't seem amused, but sighs instead. The princess is the only one that looks convinced by your conviction.

"Okay Jack, I'm pretty sure we know what we're doing, but I don't really see the harm in entertaining your little game. "
She walks into the room and spins on her heel,

"So, what do we do first to repel disease? Stand in our heads?" She laughs like that's the funniest thing anyone ever said.
"No Lass, You need facemasks and adequate air in here, first."

You turn to the maid, "Get some of those masks that I saw the butchers using earlier, the ones they use to keep blood out of their mouths. You'll need enough for every person on staff. Pack them full of peppercorn, and do not share masks."
She nods, looking very confused at your orders. She wanders off down the hallway.

"Camille, you're coming with me."
"What?! But I need to stay here and-"
"I'll need help looking for these mushrooms, and I'm worried you'll just tell everyone to go into the room anyway. Let's go get someone to wait here in our stead."
She looks irritated at your comment, but you're not going to argue with her at a time like this.

You walk into the Library, it's far larger here than it is back in Biscotti. You could easily get lost in a library like this for days at a time. Maids and scholars hop back and forth from bookshelf to bookshelf, taking books off and putting them back. The sound of papers shuffling is almost enough to drive anyone mad.
You're already mad, so you don't have time for this.

The silence is broken with a magnificent yell, "Aligot! ALIGOT! Get yer ass over here at once!"

There's the sound of some maids gasping and some scholars averting their eyes. You wonder to yourself if being a tremendous wuss is a prerequisite for being a scholar.

Aligot gingerly shuffles his way from the back of the library.
"Jack, what are you doing here?"
"I'm giving you yer first mission, Aligot." you grab his arm and pull him into the hallway.
"I don't know what you're talking about. I'm supposed to be deciphering that circle, what is more important than that?"
"Too long to explain, but someone is sick."

He stops, "So you want me to do something? I don't know anything about healing, maybe the archmage can help?"
"If he does, go get him later. Right now you're going to keep people out of a room."
"Uh, what?"

Your entourage approaches the room, the princess continues to stand outside pacing back and fourth.

"Simple Lad, if a maid comes here, and she doesn't have a facemask on, you don't let her in."
"..Jack you do realize that I don't have any authority here, right?" Aligot folds his arms.
"Then grow some authorities. I'm going to find a remedy, make sure you are still standing right here when I get back." You draw an X on the stone floor with your foot.

Leaning into his comfort zone, you cock your eye in the same way the Quartermaster used to when he wanted something done,
"Or else."

"Uhh." He backs against the wall, "Y-yes Jack."
"Good! I'll see ye in a few hours. Come on Camille."

On your way out the door, you pass by Antonin.
"Antonin, Aye got a special job for you."
"Hmm?"
"Go to the room that the princess is standing outside of, and make sure that no one gets in that room without a facemask. There's a sick patient inside."
"A sick patient? Who is it?"
"Your Hero."

He pauses for a few seconds, looking toward his feet.
"I was wondering about that. I think I have a few questions for the princess myself if that's the case."
"Just remember, no one gets in the room without a mask."

He nods and waves as he walks off down the hallway. You're pretty surprised that everyone seems to be going along with you. Maybe it's because, deep down, they realize that they don't know what to do either.

You and Camille saddle up on her silly looking bird and head toward the direction of town. It's much closer to the castle than the town around Biscotti, so you should be able to make that trip to the bar in no time flat.

A half-hour later, the night is slowly starting to wane, dew falls onto the grass, and the matted dirt surrounding the village is swept up by shopkeepers opening their stores for the morning.

The bar has since filed out its patrons, leaving only a bored bartender polishing the furnishings and the counters.

"Sorry Folks, but I ran out of that a while ago. We're not like the fancy Inn back in Biscotti. Here, if you can't take your liquor, we just let you pass out until the morning."

"Is there any place I can get it? Someone's life, and maybe the lives of many more, are at stake."
The bartenders chuckles, like he thinks you're being dramatic.
"Well, you could try going to the Inn in Biscotti."
You know that this is at least a four to six hour round trip.

"Or, there's a nearby marsh where they grow. The wildlife there can be mighty fierce, but I remember simply going there and picking them when I cared enough to get 'em."

You pull Camille out before she has too many drinks. Spending some time browsing the potion shops, you eventually come to the conclusion that it's a wasted effort. You would think this
You take a note on what the mushroom looks like from the apothecary before setting off to the marsh.

The road starts to slowly decay and drop off. The once cobblestone-paved road decays into a light trail, and then a dusty path, and then a barely visible line of sand amongst the foliage and the trees.
You certainly hope Camille knows where it is, because you are completely lost right now.

"We're pretty close now" she says, adjusting her weight on the bird as it slowly starts to tread over muddy streams and moist ground.
"The girl at the shop said that it should grow under the shade of trees by the riverbank. Let's go on foot from here, Jack."

You both dismount and leave the bird someplace visible, one wrong turn out here could very easily mean getting lost for days.
Walking through the overgrown paths and mazes of trees. You come to the edge of a small lake.

"Over there!" Camille says, jumping onto a tree that has leaned over into the water.
On a root or some kind of small lump of sand, are three mushrooms with a red arrow pattern across their tops.

Camille swings on the tree and tries reaching for them, but is too short to grab them.

You get onto the tree with her, hooking your legs around the trunk of the tree, you hang upside-down to grab at the mushrooms.

"Alright, almost got it lass, allmost, just a little more."

You whip your hand around and grab a mushroom firmly. You pass it up to Camille as she puts it in a sack.
"Aye'll grab a couple more fo-"

You can hear a light cracking noise coming from the base of the tree. You were aware it wouldn't hold your weight for very long, but felt it would at least be longer than this.
"LASS! GET OFF!"

Camille takes a running leap off the tree. You arch your arm along the trunk and start swinging until you have a good back and forth pace going, before propelling yourself onto dry land. You're pretty thankful of the super strength at times like this.

Both of you press and kick the base of the tree to see if it budges, but to no avail. It seems pretty sturdy right now.

"Okay, Aye'll-"
You're cut off by the sound of a branch chipping and breaking from the tree. It falls onto the small mushroom patch with a heavy thud.

Off in the reeds at the bank, you could have swore that you heard a yelp.

The small mushroom patch shimmers and then submerges beneath the water.

"What?" Is all Camille can squeak out.

In the grass and weeds surrounding the bank, you can hear something crawling and moving. You can see something faintly illuminated by the sunlight. Wrapping and coiling beneath the surface, only barely disturbing the calmness of the lake.

Suddenly, with a yell, a figure explodes from the lake. It clearly has a kind of human shape to it.

At least, the top part of her is lady shaped.

"Who the fuck are you, and what the fuck was that for?!" She screams, brandishing a set of shapely claws. She grits her teeth as she whips and splashes at the water.

Along her back, you can see more of the same mushrooms growing along her body.

"Give me one reason I shouldn't turn both of you into little balls and hang you from the trees."

>scales
The important question is: does she have a tail to fondle?
>>
>>34639389
Yar, but she would likely wrap you with it if you tried.
>>
>>34639421
I fail to see the problem.

>how do you feel about scales?

Pretty ok, but we'll have to clean her up first, she's clearly filthy, and not even salty ship filthy like we're familiar with, just regular nasty swamp filthy.

I think this calls for a bath so we can scrub her back. That's assuming we don't just end up punching out the angry snake lady because GOTTA GO FAST, of course.
