I've had a long night, but I stay up with Mom long enough to get some tea and calm my nerves. Fortunately, I don't seem to have any more nightmares to accompany the rest of my sleep.
Just to make sure though, I sleep in Mom's bed for the rest of the night.

--

Morning washes through the windows and the blinds. A tiny peek of the sun through the window shines into my eyes and stirs me from my sleep. Which is just as well, because I was going to wake up soon anyway.

Rousing from my slumber, I walk to the living room just in time to notice Mom setting out breakfast. We sit down and starting eating in relative silence.

"So," Mom says, sipping from her teacup, "Do you want to tell me what happened last night?"

>Pick one from here
>Tell her about the dreams and the cards
>Tell her about the dream
>Just tell her about the walk
>Other?

Before I can say anything, she has a sudden realization, "Oh and I forgot to mention last night. If you want, we can both go to Fortune this morning and you can be back in class by Noon. You could even come over during lunch if you want or after class."
She sips her teacup, "Or just not worry about it. It's up to you."

>And also pick one from here
>Go to Fortune before lunch
>Go during/after lunch
>Don't worry about it for today
>Decide later.

"I'll go during lunch. I really don't want to disappear before school and have my friends looking for me."
I sip from this morning's tea, she really did an impressive job with this brew.

She nods as she dips into her rice. I do the same, and notice the rich texture of the moist granuals. She really does make the best rice.
"And as for what happened last night, I kind of had a nightmare and decided to go for a walk." I take another sip of my tea, clearing my throat.
Mom doens't seem very phased by it so far, "Mm. What kind of nightmare?" She idly says in a wistful manner.

"I dreamed of a young girl having a card taken away from her." This gets Mom's attention, and I can feel her eyes turn to me. "Somehow, I feel like I was linked to the card that was being taken away."

She downs the rest of her tea with a single gulp.
"Is.. that all?"
"Well there's one other thing." I say, smiling at her, "That girl looked a little like you."
I can tell the pressure has swelled in Mom's head. A small blush draws across her face as she pours herself another cup of tea.

I smile at her, "Why not tell me about your nightmare, next?"

She quickly gulps this cup of tea down as well,
"Um, well sweetie, you see." She puts down her cup of tea and kneads at her hands in a worried manner. "I kind of had the same nightmare as you."

Two people having the same dream at the same time? That-
"That's weird." I say, stirring at my rice.
She laughs nervously as she scoops up more rice into her bowl. "It is, isn't it?"
The next few minutes are spent in relative awkward silence. Occasionally we reach over and gather more helpings of food for ourselves.

This is probably a really poor question to ask, but I'm going to ask it anyway;
"When you were younger, did that really happen to you?" I can feel my cheeks turn red as I finish asking that question.
She coughs slightly, looking back down at her plate.

"Uh, um. Hey! I figured out what these two new cards I got do." Awkward laugh all around.
She relaxes almost immediately, "O-oh? That's good."
"Yeah! One can jump really far and the other. "
Actually, I'm not sure how I should describe the other one.
"Well, the other is just for fun, I guess."

She leans forward, setting down her rice. "Can I see it?"

I nod and take out the card and slip it on over my pajamas. I can feel the weight of the blue and red outfit against me. I turn over to where my shadow is being cast along the floor from the morning sun. Just like last night and the shadow from the moon; there is now a black silhouette of myself standing in my shadow's place. It looks back at me with its inky black face. It probably wouldn't be so creepy if it had visible eyes or a mouth.

Mom looks shocked, "That's. really something sweetie, but-"
She cuts herself off, her eyes go wide and her jaw drops. Her gaze has turned from me and out the window.

Spinning around, I'm immediately face-to-face with Aiko. She stands in the driveway, peering inside, wide-eyed in terror. I'm suddenly very aware that my shadowy double is standing right in front of the window.

I open the window and lean out of it, my shadow does the same.
"Hi Aiiiko!" Both my real hands and nebulous hands both wave at her.

She looks like she wants to faint onto the pavement. Slowly, she trudges toward the front door.

I dismiss the card and open the door, "Hello Aiko!"
"Masami.. What was that just now?"
"What was what?"
She's still wide-eyed and shocked "There was a-"
"a what, Aiko?" I can't keep myself from smiling.

She studders and tries to draw vague figures in the air with her hands.
Suddenly, her outbreak is interrupted by Mom, "That's not very nice, Masami."

"Oh okay." I can feel my mouth turn into a really goofy smile. "It's a new card, but I don't really know what to do with it yet."
I take the card out and put it back on, the shadow double appears behind me, mimicking my motions.
This didn't really seem to help Aiko's confusion, "That's.. uh."

"Want to come in for breakfast, Aiko?" Mom says, clattering some plates together.

"N-no, Um. Well. Maybe." She looks back toward my double, and sighs in resignation.
"..I'll have some tea."
"Great!"
Mom hurries off to the kitchen to get another teacup for Aiko.

Aiko walks up to the table and sits down. She's shrouded in silence for a moment, before a wicked grin shines across her face.
"Now that there's two of you, I can expect both of you to help with my homework, right? Or how about with club activities?"

"Uh. Um."

This came back to haunt me in a way I didn't expect.

We say our goodbyes to Mom as we step onto the driveway. I make sure my cards and phone are in my uniform before I shut the door.

Aiko and I chat about some minor things on the way to school. She didn't seem to be missing anything from her house, but she did notice that someone had moved some objects in her room. I jokingly suggested that maybe a bug was planted.

I really shouldn't have suggested it, because she took it seriously. Then started to worry about all the places that she didn't check. Like maybe in her lightbulbs? Or under the carpet? Or maybe even inside a light switch?
I tell her that she just watches too much television.

We round the corner a block away from school, when we notice something amiss.
There's a commotion occuring down a side street. I can hear some clashing and banging from down an alleyway. It sounds like something huge, like maybe construction equipment?

"Hold up Aiko, I want to go see what that sound is." I turn and start walking down the side alley.

"You heard it too? I thought I was just going insane."
She grabs me by my collar, "Hey! Don't just wander off without me."
"Sure, sure." I say to her. We both start off down the alleyway toward the sound of commotion.

The noises slowly start to become clearer as we approach their source, first it sounded like construction equipment, then like demolition work, now it has the clear sound of metal grinding on concrete and pavement.

What draws into view is another fully metallic monster. Again, this one is WAY taller than either of us. A definite contrast to their smaller counterparts that we've been fighting.

He thrashes at the pavement, he seems to be fighting something that's buzzing around him too fast for me to see.

Aiko turns to me, "Let's get Ryouta to help! We shouldn't be fighting that thing alone!"
She whips out her phone as she starts to run in the opposite direction, back down the alleyway. I keep up with her, until I remember that monster was still fighting a person, and that I should at least help until Ryouta gets there.

I run back toward monster, just in time to see something reflect off its armor with a bang. It's the masked girl from the other day.
"Are you okay?!" I yell at her, she looks back at me, and then tries to shoo me away with a hand motion.

"You want me to leave?! I can't just-!"
She ignores the rest of my sentence and jumps off toward the monster, leaving several dents in its armor and tearing away a pauldron.

"What do I do?"

I jump inside Julie's card with a running leap. Letting the sword take its hold in my hand; I dash at the monster full-speed. Nearly taking off one of its arms whole.
The masked girl is clearly upset by my interruption, but I'm not going to let that stop me. She holds something close to her chest, with a wave, she thrusts her hands at the monster.

A bolt, seemingly made of air, whizzes past his head. This is his cue to grab her and hit her as many times as he can before flinging her across the street with a mighty throw.
That's not good.

I slice at the air several times, the blue aura surrounding my sword forms into a very dangerous blade. With a flick of my wrist, it flies outward in a wave toward the monster. Slicing it directly in it's back.
That's new, I didn't know it could do that.

His attention is now firmly on me, the girl still struggles to stand as the monster approaches.

Rolled 12 - 2 (1d20 - 2)

I step back several paces, really knowing that this sword can attack from afar changes everything.

Feeling the aura moving through my hands, I let the sword take a big gulp of blue, swirling energy, before unleashing it straight at the monster. He takes it right in the face, before bumbling backwards uselessly.

His armor cracks and splinters, falling off into chunks which all hit the ground and disintegrate.
He rears up for another attack, but is interrupted by several shots that bounce off his back. Ricocheting and splintering his armor.

The last few pieces of his chestpiece fall off, revealing a card floating in the darkness of his carapiece.

The masked girl makes her move, even though she's clearly injured. She hobbles in a light dash toward the card.

No no, she's not doing it. She's going to grab that card and try to take off again.
I'm not letting that happen, at least not while she's injured.

Taking my sword in hand, I dash at the monster and unleash a flurry of cuts and swipes.
Slowly, he starts crumbling to pieces, exposing more and more of the card. First the pieces connected to his shoulders start to slide off, then the rest of his legs fall to pieces.

But just before his arms come apart, he pulls back for a punch directly at me.
And on his backswing, he 'accidentally' elbows the masked girl in the neck. She tumbles backwards onto the pavement, wheezes several times, and then stops moving.

Oh no.

While letting the energy build up in the sword, I take one might stab straight through the center of it, and detonate the energy. The blue wisps of light wash away the last remaining pieces of the beast.

I grab the card and stuff it in my pocket, I'll look at that later. But first, I flip over to Haruko and run over to the girl. I can tell she's out cold. Her breathing is short and her neck is sporting a bruise.

Immediately, Haruko's aura sets to work healing the girl. I scoop her up into my arms as they weakly try to push me away. Her eyes aren't open, but she can tell who the person holding her is.
Within a few moments, through some struggling and writhing, she falls asleep in my arms.

"Now what?"

A bit of a tie we have here regarding peeking or not.

Also next post may be the last post of the night. Sorry again for another short thread.

I'm really tempted to look under the mask.
But at the same time, I know how it feels to have secrets that you don't want the world to know.
I know my friends tried to poke and prod into my personal life, and while they're still my friends, I felt hurt when they told me.
Everyone has their reasons for hiding something about themselves. I'm not even sure that I'm ready to come out with all my problems to my closest friends.

I take out my phone and send a text to Aiko and Ryouta, telling them that I'm fine. As well as telling them that it's under control and I'll be in class in a few minutes.

Ryouta texts me back a few minutes later, saying that he's coming over anyway. I don't really want him coming over and un-masking the girl either, so I start a light walk down the street, toward a small park.

We arrive at the park, and I lay her down on one of the benches before sitting beside her. The aura continues to slowly heal the lump on her throat.
Several minutes pass by, I watch several passerbys walking their dogs wave at me. Maybe they don't notice the suspicious person in a mask laying next to me, maybe they don't care.

I can feel her stirring after a short while. Her arm rises to the back of the bench as she pulls herself up.
And then snaps around to notice me sitting there. I smile and wave at her as she leaps from the bench into a stance.

"Calm down, you were hurt."

(1/2)
>>
>>34713792
She relaxes her pose, and turns her back to me.
"You didn't look, did you?"
"No! Of course not. I know what's like having something to hide."
This, for whatever reason, makes her ball her hands into fists.
"Thanks, but I don't need your help. I'll be fine on my own."

She wearily starts to walk away, but I don't let her go that easy.
I stand up and put my hand on her shoulder.
"Just, do you need my phone number? A place to stay? Anything?"
Her shoulders slump, she starts to say something, but hesitates.

"No.. I'll be fine. Just.. Go away."

That's not going to work, at all.
Running up behind her, I pull her into a hug. I take out my phone and show it to her.
"Here, Here's my phone number, just call me if-"
"PLEASE." I can tell her body has stiffened at that last line of insistence. She shrugs off my hug and continues walking forward.

She swipes a card against her wrist, I interrupt her again before she decides to disappear.
"Can you at least tell me what that thing is?"
As she's leaping away, she tells back to me,
"Why don't you ask your father!?"
And with that, she disappears from sight.

Great. More things Dad is hiding from me.

Thread end.

I abandoned it for the last few posts because it's mentally intensive and it's late here, but I start by writing the dialogue first, action next, fluff next, flavor text last. Which means I have to plan the entire post ahead of time and keep track of it in my head.

Glad it's working out when I'm awake and aware, at least. I should just go back to running at 12PM EST where I had the whole day to write.
