Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you woke up really hungover, learned a horrible secret, made a fool of yourself, and then stopped for pastries.

You step up to the counter, taking a look at what he has on display. You note a bucket containing a strange sort of bread, long and seemingly twisted together. It has a hard outer crust, and many of the loaves have melted cheese on top. He also has a sort of pastry you're not familiar with. It's soft, golden brown in color, and seems to be stuffed with something or other. They smell like lamb meat, lamb you think, but you're not entirely sure. Some of them also appear to be filled with mashed fruit, or cheese.

He has an entire selection of pastries that appear to simply be bread twisted together into intricate patterns and sprinkled with nuts or honey or a variety of other toppings. Of course, he's also only just pulled a fresh tray of baklava out of the oven behind him. You also note a number of pies, dates, apples, wild berries, chicken, and lamb featuring prominently. You note a fairly massive brick of halva, you think sesame based and filled with nuts. Finally there is a massive metal contraption set up next to the counter which emanates cold. You've little idea what might be inside, but it takes up most of the western wall.

You realize he asked you a question, and you've simply been standing there staring. You clear your throat in an attempt to recover and place your order. “We'll have three servings of the baklava.-” You turn your attention to Chrys. “Do you want anything else?” She nods. “I would like a half dozen klobasnek, a half dozen pirozhki, and a dozen kolace.” The baker grins wide. “Ah! Familiar with Elven cuisine, I see! From the Provinces or the Rebel Kingdoms? No matter.” He waves a hand dismissively. “What kind of kolace? I have date, fig, cherry, and grape.” Chrys frowns slightly. “Cherry and date, six of each.”

Well, that's a bit more food than you expected. The pastries the baker seems to be picking out are rather small though, it shouldn't be an issue. He packs them all tightly into a basket, separating each layer with a cloth before packing another on top of it. Once he's selected Chryssa's two dozen... whatever they were called he cuts three very, very generous portions of Baklava out of the tray and wraps them carefully in oiled parchment before stacking them and bundling them in a cloth. Once done he sets your food on the counter top with a wide smile. “Thirty silver, my friends!” Two gold, in other words. That's a fairly standard price for this much food.

Probably got put out while fighting a dragon, which he did so in order to discover its secret of fire, in order to become the worlds GREATEST BAKER

He's also a lich, that's why he was around when dragons were. He's a lich baker. I've got my bases covered.

You think for a moment, and then shake your head. “Actually, can we get a slice of halva, a half dozen sandesh, and-” You glance around. Doesn't seem he has mysore pak, but he does have something you think might be bamiyeh, a type of deep-fried dough balls covered in sugar, honey, and cinnamon. “Half a dozen bamiyeh.” He busies himself collecting your orders, but there's been a question eating at you since you first saw him. “Would you mind telling me what happened to your eye?” He hardly spares you a look while he's busy bundling up your bamiyeh. “Not at all! Most everyone in town has asked about it at some point.”

He sets the bundle down next to the rest of the food and then pulls out the brick of halva, looking around for a knife to cut it with. “Whilst plying my skills as a merchant marine, the vessel I had been hired to protect was boarded by pirates. I fought valiantly, as was my duty, but I took a blow to the head and woke up some time later in a damp cell. The pirates, you see, had a powerful vatis in their midst and he'd healed my wound, a wound which would've killed me otherwise. After that they offered an ultimatum to the surviving crewman, join up or die. I spent thirty years pillaging the high seas with that rat bastard Zaman. That is, until our ship met one of the Shah's navy. We were aflame on open water, I had no choice but to leap into the sea and swim for the nearest shoreline.”

(1/2 or 3)
>>
He shrugs his shoulders, having sliced off a generous portion of halva and further cut it into sixths. He bundles it up and sets it next to the rest of your food. “I came ashore a short ways down the coast. One of the fishermen found me and took me to see the Varistha. He treated me kindly and healed my wounds, even offered to heal my eye. However, I refused him. A wound such as this is a mark of honor, and I would not want to be rid of it. I've been plying my trade as a baker ever since, it was the profession of my father and his father before him. Funnily enough I went to sea specifically to avoid the life I currently live.”

He claps his hands together. “Now then! That will be forty-five silver.” You hand him three gold coins, a paltry sum as far as you're concerned. He scoops up the coins deftly and drops them into a large clay pot behind the counter. “May your days be long and the winds ever at your back, my friend!” He seems awfully friendly for a self-professed former pirate. He also seemed to give out that story far, far too freely. Normally pirates are either beheaded or banished, depending on the length and success of their career.

You pluck up your bundles of baklava and sandesh. Chryssa gets the bamiyeh and the various pastries she picked out. Food in hand, the two of you say your goodbyes to Bastien and duck out of the bakery. Chryssa speaks up as you make your way towards the docks. “Will we be able to eat all of this while we work? I would not want raw fish intestines to flavor my meal.” You shake your head. “We'll have plenty of time to eat before the fishermen return, don't worry.”

(2/3)
>>
The walk to the docks is a short one, the bakery is practically on the beach, or the rocky coastline that passes for a beach in this village. The docks are more or less abandoned, only a handful of ships in sight. However, you do see a man standing before a particularly ornate sloop. It's painted in shades of blue, red, orange, and gold. It's rigging is in good condition and it's triangular sails are furled. You'd estimate it to be roughly twenty, or perhaps thirty feet long. A sloop. The man waves enthusiastically once he notices you.

Presumably, he has something to tell you. You're not entirely sure how he knows who you are, but presumably he was told at some point. You approach, and he jogs up to you. As he gets closer you decide he couldn't be much older than thirteen or fourteen, barely out of boyhood. He's dark skinned even by Samjan standards, nearly coal black in color, and his head is shaved. He looks tragically underfed, but that may simply be a product of his age. As he gets close, he halts suddenly and snaps off a sloppy salute. “Morning, sir! Boss lady told me I was 'sposed to help yah out. Getcha all acquainted with the boat.”

>That won't be necessary, you're actually quite familiar with sailing a relatively small vessel like this one.

Well then
>>
You hold up a hand placatingly. “That's quite unnecessary. I'm more than familiar with sailing a vessel such as this.” The boy seems to visibly deflate. “However, an additional hand would be welcome. I have only one more friend coming and three people does not a crew make.” In a moment his spirits have rebounded. He pumps a fist in the air in celebration. “Yes! D'ya think we'll find any pirates? I've been workin' real hard on my sword work! I'm the best fighter out of all my friends!” He states this with a rather disproportionate amount of pride. “Well, I certainly hope we don't meet any pirates but if we do I'll rely on you to repel boarders.”

The look on his face is priceless. He only comes back down to Earth when you start to tromp off down the dock to the moored vessel. Apparently he'd already run out the gangplank, so you simply need to climb aboard. Chrys seems at least slightly uneasy, though she hides it well. Most probably wouldn't notice, but you're starting to get better at reading her lately. You retreat to the ship's castle at the stern and find it houses two rather luxurious cabins, for a ship that is. There is also a small common area which houses maps, star charts, a sextant, and a ship's compass.

You take a seat at a relatively large table in the center of the common area and start unpacking food. Chryssa takes a seat next to you, conspicuously scooting her seat a touch closer, while the boy sits down across from you. He's eyeing the food hungrily, you suppose you'll have to share. “So, tell me how these voyages-” You're not really sure this qualifies as a true voyage, more of a simple cruise around the bay, but it's of no consequence. “-usually go. What is expected of us?”
(1/2)
>>
The boy tears his eyes away from the warm meal reluctantly. “Usually wha'appens is they'll just take a little jaunt along the coastl an' then loop on back to the village. We get raiders, pirates, and traders occasionally but it isn't a common thing.” About what you expected, then. “What's your name, boy?” He beams proudly. “Husayn! On account of me bein' so handsome! 'least that's what my mom tells me.” Chryssa speaks up, her voice more or less monotone as usual. “Children are so adorable.” This seems to anger Husayn. “I'm not adorable and I'm not a child! I'm a full grown man, a sailor!” Well, that seems a bit of an exaggeration. “I'll fight you, lady!”

So...how well are these raiders and pirates usually armed? What are their motivations for attacking? They know can't possibly escape unscathed attacking well trained water Vatis in the middle of the Ocean, right? What are they, retarded or desperate? Are there any local fauna in the area that might be a problem? DO the rocks in the area pose any significant threat? (For Chryssa)

“I wouldn't do that if I were you.” You caution, tone serious. Husayn hesitates. “Why not? Horns don't scare me, especially not on a girl!” You turn your attention to Chrys. “A demonstration?” She simply nods. “A demonstration.” She busies herself daintily removing the food from the table and then stands up. You scoot your chair back, and Husayn mimics you with a confused look on his face. The deck complains loudly as Chrys grabs hold of either end of the table and effortlessly hoist the heavy wooden construction into the air. She holds it there for several seconds, at one point even holding it one handed, before gently putting it back down where it sat before.

The Husayn's eyes have gone wide by the time she's finished her little display. “Shit, lady! How'd you-” She cuts him off with a pointed glare. He goes quiet in an instant. “It is improper for children to speak such profanity. Watch your tongue.” The kid scrunches up his face in confusion. “What the fuck did I say?” Chryssa shakes her head slowly. “Do not play me for a fool, young man. A foul mouth leads to foul thoughts and fouler actions.” She states this definitively, as if recalling one of the universal rules of the universe. You're not really sure you agree, and knowing the way she thinks when she's angry or panicked you're not really sure she's in a position to be lecturing the kid about his potty mouth, but you'll let it slide.

(1/?)
>>
Instead of getting further embroiled in their argument you hoist the food back into its proper position and start unwrapping it, spreading your veritable feast across the table. This seems to effectively put an end to discussion as both Chrys and Husayn switch focus. Almost timidly, Husayn speaks up. “Might I share the meal, sir?” Suddenly he's as polite as could be. A rather drastic shift from his previous demeanor. You laugh. “Of course! Just don't take the last piece of baklava, it's for a friend.” He nods his head excitedly, plucking up one of the 'kolaches' you believe it was called and biting in. Chrys has pulled a piece of baklava in front of her and unwrapped the oiled parchment, staring at it with a mix of suspicion and curiosity. It takes you digging into your own piece to convince her it's okay to eat.

She chews slowly, face devoid of emotion until the moment she swallows. She smiles just slightly before stuffing another piece into her mouth. Seems she likes it. You have to admit, it's good Baklava. You don't recognize some of the spices you taste but they compliment the dish well and the bread is delightful. Perhaps it could use more honey, but that's a matter of personal preference.

“So tell me, Husayn. How long have you been a sailor?” He pauses mid-bite, reluctantly pulling the kolach away from his face. “About six years now, started goin' out with the fishermen after my pa' got drafted.” You'd come to understand that the Shah's Navy will typically run from coastal village to coastal village forcefully recruiting men of acceptable physical condition, typically for five or six year terms. It's hard to find people who will willingly abandon their families for months at sea. “I was 'bout... ten at the time.” You're relatively certain this kid is lying about his age, there is now way he's sixteen. For one, he's barely above five and a half feet tall. Perhaps not even that.

(2/?)
>>
His age isn't really any of your concern to you, so you decide to simply move on to your next question rather than call him on it. “What kind of fish does one usually catch around here? Any interesting sites to see, places to explore?” The kid shrugs his shoulders. “We get your usual bronze robalo, rope fish, sea bats, and needle nose. You'll also occasionally get some crabs, or polypodes. Way out I've hear fishermen have caught ketos, battled charybdis, and even spotted hydra. None recently though, think those might've jus' been old fisherman's tales. As for interestin' places? They're slim around here, I'm afraid. There are a bunch of coves on the coastal cliffs to the, uh-” He holds ups his hands, thinking for a moment. “-east of here, but nobody ever goes in 'em. Said they're haunted, and only pirates would dare enter.” Judging by the way Husayn scoffs, you can tell he doesn't agree with the caution of his elders.

You certainly hope you won't be facing any mythical sea monsters today. A hydra is said to be the only creature on Earth with better control of water than an experienced Vatis, and charybdis are more like forces of nature than creatures, sucking down ships much larger than the one you're sitting in whole. You have to admit you're not really sure what a ketos is. “What about these pirates? How well armed are they, why do they attack a village protected by a disproportionate number of experienced water vatis? What cause have they to pillage in the first place?”

(3/?)
>>
Husayn shrugs, tearing a piece off of a fruit kolach and speaking through a full mouth. “Well-y'see. Most of them pirates is vatis themselves, they're, uh...” He trails off, chewing contemplatively. Eventually he seems to recall the word he's looking for. “Aghtaki! Yeah, that's it. Y'see, on the seas a Captain is jury, judge, and executioner on his own ship. So we get a lot of sailors tossed overboard for bein' insolent or what have yah. They drown or get picked up by someone passin' by, and more often than not the people passin' by are pirates. Soon as they see that brand they're thick as thieves, fittin' since they are thieves. Anyway, there's this guy-” Husayn gets this look in his eye, a mix of admiration and loathing. “They call 'im the Pirate King of Anthus. Nobody who's seen him in person has lived to tell the tale, or if they 'ave they're part of his crew. He's supposed to be one of the best Vatis to walk the Earth.”

That sounds like an outrageous claim, but you suppose it's not unfeasible that a Grandmaster Water Vatis could quickly rise through the ranks as a pirate. Really, a pirate's life probably wouldn't have been too unpleasant, had you decided to go that route. You're distracted from your thoughts by Darzi's voice filtering through the back of your head. {I'm waiting at the docks, whenever you two come down this way.} You respond promptly. {We're on the painted up sloop moored at the docks, come to the aftcastle.} Darzi responds after a moment. {The where?} You sigh. {The raised portion at the rear of the ship.} She severs the connection after indicating she understood, and you return your focus to the meal at hand. Husayn looks at you oddly.

“Why'd you go starin' off into space, Sir?” You wave a hand dismissively. “Informing a friend of our location.” Husayn scrunches up his face. “How?” Right, most people can't communicate telepathically. You indicate the brooch fastening your cloak. “This enchanted artifact allows me to communicate with my companions, most of them at least, mentally.” Husayn seems suitably impressed, and after a few minutes of bragging about your numerous and varied adventures, leaving out anything of any import of course, Darzi pushes open the door. She looks a little disappointed when she sees you and Chrys, but that quickly shifts to confusion when she notices Husayn. “Who's the kid?”

You give her a brief rundown, relating that he was sent to help you man the ship. Darzi nods before joining you at the table and tucking into baklava you got her, as well as the various other pastries that the three of you hadn't already eaten. Around a mouth full of kolach she ask. “So, did I miss anything?” Chrys is the one to respond. “Not particularly, we have mostly been talking.” Chrys and Darzi share a look, and you feel there is some sort of nonverbal communication going on, but that seems to be the end of it.

So is the pirate king related to the guy who we're supposed to be stealing the red gem for Sadik off of? Anthus is fairly close to Chiron and for a guy who owns a mercenary fleet, dealing with a pirate king is probably commonplace.

You stand, stretching at length. “Alright, guess we ought to attend to our duties then. Husayn, run up the rigging and throw off our moorings.” Husayn scrambles to his feet, very nearly knocking his chair down. “Right away, sir!” He scampers off after that to attend to the duties you assigned, you turn your attention to Chrys and Darzi. “I'll need you two to help me turn the ship into the wind, you especially Chrys. Which of you has the better eyesight?” Chrys reaches into her cloak and withdraws her Elaudian Death Mask. She's not wearing her armor currently, so she ought to be able to wear it. “Fantastic. Chrys, you'll be on look out. Darzi, what do you know about sailing?” She shakes her head. “Absolutely nothing. I can read a star chart, if that helps.”

You shrug. “It might, but we're probably not going to be out here that long. In that case I'll leave you to do whatever you to your own devices.” With that, you stride out of the aftcastle with a confident swagger. It was nice to be back on a ship. It reminds you fondly of trips with your Master into the middle of the ocean, where he'd toss you overboard before sailing back to shore. You owe your abilities as a swimmer to those trips. You help Husayn run the rigging and then step off onto the docks to help unmoor the ship. Once that's done, you have Chrys grab hold of a rope attached to the side of the sloop while you and Darzi grab a rope on the other side. The strength of the three of you combined, but mainly Chrys, is enough to pull the ship out of its dock and from there the wind does your work for you.
(`/1)
>>
Getting back on is a bit harder. You can simply walk across the water, freezing it in front of you with each step. Chrys takes a few steps back and then runs forward, making a truly astonishing flying leap and managing to grab hold of the ship's rail, hauling herself up deftly. Darzi has the hardest time of it. She ends up following along behind you, nearly slipping into the sea on a number of occasions. Eventually, everyone manages to make it back on board and you dispatch Chrys to climb the mainmast while Husayn and yourself hoist and trim the sails. In a matter of minutes you've gone from moored in dock to sailing off with the wind at your back.

You steer the ship gently into the wind. A few fishermen wave to you as you pass, but by and large the waters are smooth and devoid of traffic. You navigate past a few small islands, each of which is crowded with buildings. Most of them appear to be homes, but you note a few inns, a handful of trading post, and even a shipyard dominating one island. It's rare for a village this tiny to have its own shipyard, most fishing villages either rely on family boats or buy from a major port. Once you're past the islands, it's nothing but the open sea.

The winds pick up significantly once you're out of the sheltered bay the village is situated on, and you have a little trouble keeping the ship on course. However, since you don't really have a course in mind you by and large just go with the flow, trying to stay within sight of the shore at the very least. You find yourself sailing along a sheer cliff face, pockmarked with caves and showing clear signs of erosion. As you sail further on you come across a truly massive cove, the entrance large enough for a frigate to easily fit inside, and it has innumerable smaller entrances that would serve well as escape routes. If you were a pirate, this would be your port of call. Sadly you see nothing inside, and so sail onwards.
(2/3)
>>
The first leg of your journey is peaceful, you don't notice anything of particular note. Around noon you begin to swing the ship around to sail back to port, the ship's boom swinging wildly across the deck and very nearly taking Darzi's head off. Fortunately she has the good sense to duck. However, what draws your attention is not the fact you almost knocked your friend unconscious, rather it's the pillar of black smoke rising on the horizon. It's further out into the open sea, and rather off course really. Nowhere near the village, and thus unlikely to involve a fisherman's vessel. Still, you find yourself curious.

You turn the wheel, shouting down a warning this time to Darzi and Husayn. The boom once more swings across the deck before slamming into place, and the ship coast gently towards the column of smoke in the distance. By your rough estimate, it's about twenty or so leagues away. You shout down to Husayn. “Hoy! What's our speed?” The boy rushes to an anchor, hefting it carefully and tossing it over the edge. After about thirty seconds he counts out the knots remaining on the rope and shouts back. “Eighteen knots, sir!”

You're making good speed. You ought to be able to reach the pillar of black smoke in roughly three hours, or there abouts. That means you probably won't get back to the village until nightfall, but hopefully the risk you're taking will prove worth it. The pillar of smoke continues to billow skywards for the first hour or so, at which point you hear a loud boom. Loud enough that you can hear it from fifteen leagues or so away. Roughly an hour after the boom, the smoke is gone entirely. Presumably the burning ship was sunk, but why, and by what?

It isn't long after that before Chrys's voice filters into your mind. {I think I can spy some debris floating on the water, there might be people in the water. I can't tell if they're alive or dead.} You frown. {Anything else? A ship, an island, smoke, anything?} She doesn't answer you immediately. In fact, several minutes pass before she does. You were starting to think she'd just ignored you. {A thin trail of white smoke, a cookfire I think. Not very distant.} The plot thickens, you suppose.
(1/2)
>>
You start to notice loose planks drifting by the ship, most of them charred. Then barrels of discarded goods. A corpse drifts lazily by, partially eaten. You call down. “Furl sails!”, Husayn rushes to follow orders while Darzi tries to assist, though she doesn't do much good. At least she doesn't get in the way of anything. With your sails furled, you coast slowly into the debris field. It's a mess of floating planks, discarded cargo, and dead men. Unfortunately, you don't see anything of particular worth...

>Take a moment to inspect the scene more closely.
>Move on, you can see the cookfire now, further ahead. There looks to be several, in fact.

You press on. “How does the armor affect its wearer? What does channeling vys into the various pieces of armor do?” Sehzade sighs wistfully. “Warlock Armor, as it was called in my day. Hellion Armor, as the Rhynians dubbed it. I'm sure you've already noticed that it innundates the body with Vys. You told me of the adverse effects that particular enchantment was having you already. It also enhances one's strength, sight, hearing, agility, stamina... every physical attribute you can name is doubled, if not tripled while that needle is planted in your spine. Channeling vys into the helmet will activate what myself and my comrades dubbed 'the Sight'. It allows you to see the ebbs and flows of vys as well as... other things.

he said that it's not the best armor out there and that if we keep using it instead of better alternative it'll be bad for us. Maybe he added the bit that using the armor itself is dangerous to us, it certainly can't be more dangerous than a spike into the spine on the short term.

I only want to use it till we Git Gud enough to use the Warlock gear without any drawbacks
>>
You reach into your cloak, withdrawing your Centurion Armor. The back slides open and it takes only a moment for you to slip it on, even if it's not necessarily as beneficial as the Hiacian Armor it certainly is more convenient. You also don't have to worry about horrible side effects should you wear it too long. You consider giving Darzi the Elaudian Armor, but decide against it. She has the spear you gave her, and in that armor she'd sink like a stone should she fall overboard. Instead you contact Chrys via the brooches. {Do you have your armor with you?} Her response comes after a moment. {No, but I have my bow and arrows. Should it come to battle, I will remain up here and attack at range.}

That's probably for the best. You've seen her hit targets at over a hundred yards with that bow, so you have no doubt she'll prove highly effective. {Do you see anything?} There is a long pause before she responds. {Perhaps, a distant mountain top, maybe a few buildings in the general vicinity of the cookfires. It's difficult to get a good look.} You spare a glance towards Husayn, who's currently staring over the ship's railing at a corpse with a mix of horror and curiosity plain on his face. You bark out an order. “Husayn! Below deck, now!” He opens his mouth to protest, but upon seeing you've armored yourself he falters. Instead he snaps off a reluctant salute and opens a hatch on the deck, slipping below.
(1/2)
>>
You leave the wheel for a moment, heading for the ship's railing to inspect the wreckage. The ship starts to drift, but with the sails furled it's not a major concern. You note immediately that the nearest corpse is absolutely riddled with holes, and that a large portion of its head is missing. As is its right arm. You also note that many of the planks are scorched, burned, or shattered completely. One has an almost perfect semicircle taken out of one end, the area around it splintered inwards as if from a great impact. You also notice a smell in the air, acrid and harsh. It actually... reminds you vaguely of your Rhynian Officer's Pistol, though much stronger.

You've little idea what might have caused this, yet at the same time you have little desire to find out. There are more corpses in the water than you have crew, and it looks as if these men died a horrible death. There isn't even particularly much left of their once mighty ship.

Lel wat. The Centurion armor is more advanced in terms of the modes of vision and protection, as well as base utility (IE: Magic flammenwerfen gloves)

Warlock armor buffs us to the tits and back and lets us see Vys (Which we see with Centurion armor anyway) at the cost of losing some of our Vys and maybe even our efficacy at casting should we wear it too much.

Centurion is better. Get good.

Now I don't want to start a shitstorm but this is kinda false, while the centurion isn't end game tier it's certainly more than enough to hold it's ground against the hiacian.

Centurion Armor [STORED]: (+5 Soak Damage, Spell Amplification, Magic Detection (Active), Hazmat Gear (Active), Self-Repairing (Active), Health Improvement (Passive), Boost Physical Attributes (Active), Hidden Effects)

Ancient Hiacian Armor [STORED]: (+4 Soak Damage, +2 Attack, +2 Dodge, Passive Vys Gain (2/hour), Passive Health Improvement, Hidden Effects)

Yeah the hiacian gives us trips str+dex+agi yadayada but can it repair itself if something strong enough cave her in like the cent does?

I'll bet roughly 20 hookers and a pound of cocaine that those are less pirates and more that cunt Elf warlord with the islands mercs running around killing able bodied sailors to weaken the Shah's navy by killing conscript able men, and disrupting the local economy(ies), softening targets he's likely gearing up to conquer.

That's why we can't say the Cent is shit, we wouldn't be here arguing over two suits of armor if the Cent was shit. You climb back to the top of the aftcastle and take hold of the wheel. “Darzi, hoist the sails!” Darzi runs about ineffectually for several moments before you sigh, calling down once more. “Darzi, go tell Husayn to come up and hoist the sails!” She stops, folding her arms over her chest. “I can do it! Just... give me a second.” You sigh in an exaggerated manner but motion for her to continue. This time she seems to get her shit together, because after only a few minutes your sails are taught against the wind and you're steering the ship towards what you think is the direction of the village.

“Darzi, run into the cabin and check the compass. We ought to be heading southeast.” She obliges, ducking into the cabin only to emerge a few moments later. “You're heading due south!” She calls up. While that would get you to shore, it would be faster to make for the village directly. You twist the wheel to the left, and after a moment Darzi comes running back out. “Due south-east!” You twist the wheel back onto course and hold it steady, Darzi ducks back inside the cabin, presumably to keep an eye on the compass. {You know, you can always just use the brooches instead of running back and forth.} Darzi responds after a moment, embarrassment clear over your strange mental link. {I'd forgotten.}

After about two hours of sailing Chrys contacts you via the brooches. {Land sighted, due south.} Good, everything is as it should be then. {Keep an eye out for smoke trails, lights, and islands.} She responds in the affirmative, and it isn't long after that before she contacts you again. {Spotted cookfires, slightly further to the south than our current heading.} You correct your course, and after another hour of sailing you find yourself ducking between the islands towards the rocky shore. Husayn climbed back above deck hours ago, and he starts to furl the sails before you even have to give the order.

>>
As you pull towards the dock, Husayn and Darzi grab ropes and toss them overboard towards groups of men on either side of the pier. They grab the ropes and gently haul you into your moorings. One of them calls up. “You're late getting back! Lucky for you, we saved you some fish to gut! Anything happen?”

We could probably switch between them whenever, or partial switch. If we learn enough Nature (maybe enchanting could help too) we might even be able to make i semi-independent, so it responds to attacks without us needing to command it. I guess it might be better to limit the independent attacks to nonlethal though.

I say nay! Nay! How dare you vote for gutting fish with magic, don't you know that's heresy? The true way of gutting fish is by hand and grit, knife and patience, to even think of such a method is a admission of your complete naivety towards the world of fish cleaning.
Basically, you're worse than an elf.
Fish cleaning is a most ancient, most respectable discipline and all you can do is shit all over it with magic as if you're "improving" the world with your "efficiency," which is guarshit and you know it.
Being in favor of using magic to gut fish is akin to giving Hitler and Stalin a high five while balls deep in your little elven sister. You disgusting incestuous depraved wizard prickass jerkface fuckbucket.

You climb off the aftcastle, transmitting to Darzi and Chrys. {You two head back to the temple and tell the Varistha what we saw.} While you transmit this thought, you simultaneously call down to the men on the pier. “Nothing of particular interest, I simply decided to take a pleasure cruise around the area. The scenery was lovely.” Another one of the sailors calls back. “Hope you wasn't pleasure cruisin' with the boy involved, else you'll have his Ma to answer to!” That gets a round of laughs, mostly because Husayn reacts so violently. “I'm not a boy, I'm a man! Don't you bring my Ma into this!”

You raise your hands placatingly. “It wasn't that kind of pleasure cruise, unfortunately.” This sends the sailors into a rousing conversation about Darzi's ass, which sets Darzi to blushing. You can't tell if she's flattered, embarrassed, pissed off, or some strange combination of the three. While Husayn busies himself hauling out the gangplank, Chrys slips down the rigging like some sort of acrobat and lands with a heavy thud on the deck. She and Darzi set off for the pier together, while you pull Husayn aside. “Listen-” Your voice is barely above a whisper. “-don't tell the villagers about what you saw out there today. If everyone starts to panic it will just make it that much harder to handle the situation.” He purses his lips in annoyance, but nods his head accordingly.

With that the two of you stomp down the gangplank and one of the sailors slaps you companionably on the back. “What's with the armor, mate?” You glance down, shrugging. “It's got certain features which prevent one from drowning should they fall overboard.” One of the other sailors slinks up beside you. “Oooh, fancy. That the one you bought off that creepy merchant fella?” Ah, seems your story's gotten around. “It is, actually. It's served me well since I started adventuring.” You chat mildly about some of what your armor can do and your fictional pleasure cruise, as well as what some of your companions look like naked. It's pleasant, relaxing conversation.

Before you really know what's happened you've been sat down at a long table with dozens of other men and women, a skinning knife pressed into one hand and a gaping fish in the other. One of the fishermen is nice enough to walk you through the process, and after your first few fish you think you have the process down fairly well. You manifest a blade of ice in front of you, using it to skin two fish at once. Then three. Yeah, you've definitely got the hang of this. He'll, it's even sort of fun once you get used to the stench. In a weird sort of way. Not to mention, the impressed stares of the villagers are always nice. You really are a show off...

You manifest more and more blades of ice, taking up the roles of first the men next to you, and then your entire row, and before you really know it you're doing the work of the entire table. Unfortunately, even at your level a task of this caliber is draining. You're expending more vys than you're able to draw from the surroundings as you work. Fortunately you had plenty in reserve and manage to maintain your meditative trance just fine. After only a few minutes you've whittled away a significant portion of the day's catch. Before twenty minutes have passed you're mopping up what few remnants you haven't gotten to while the villagers struggle to pick up the fish you've finished dressing.
>Vys Pool: (17/30)

You manage to recover some of the vys you spent while meditating now that you don't need to maintain as many blades to finish off the last of the day's catch. You actually end up gaining a little more vys than you had when you started. The last of the fish is dressed and carted off to be preserved, either smoked or salted, and you open your eyes to find a crowd of men and women sitting around smoking and chatting amongst themselves. One of them notices you're awake and cries out. “Our hero awakens! Savior of the village from the trials of manual labor!” A cheer goes up while you absentmindedly reach into your cloak to dump a point of vys into your shockwave sword.

You're practically dragged out of your seat, you count at least five people offering to buy you drinks so long as you don't accidentally burn down the inn. This leads to some friendly ribbing, mainly relating to kidnapping wives and daughters. Then again, you're not really sure if drinking is what you need to be doing right now. The Varistha probably wants to speak with you, and after the last time you got drunk you're just not sure...

>Have a few drinks, but duck out early to get back to the temple.

We should be stoked, meditating is hard as balls.
>>
So is Grandmaster 5 insights AND the "special" thingymabob?

Or is the special one the fifth one?
>>
>>34828793
We should have gained one, since we needed two to pass it, and we did spend 6 vys to make it pass.
>>34828805
We used vys before to boost a failed meditation before and got an insight.
>>
>>34828819
Still heresy.
>>
>>34828817
The special one is the 5th insight.
>>
So, since you've gained your 4th insight towards Grandmaster now is a good time to address this. Further insight gain is locked, to advance to Grandmaster proper you're going to need something special. I've touched on this before, but I'll go into detail now. More often than not, that 'something special' can be gained just from retreating to a monastery and living a monastic life for a long while. Some Water Vatis join the Navy and spend a few years at sea. Others retreat into the Pa'vala to seek out the artifacts of Hiacia, which often allow one to 'cheat' past the special insight.

Discussing this with those who are already Grandmasters would be wise. The Varistha, the other monks, and your Master come to mind. However, the choice is yours.

Anyway, writing for

>>
>>34828887

Well, we should hold off on this for a while and get master fire, some metal and nature. Then, we will probably go the cheat route since this is /tg/ even though I'd honestly prefer we find some natural way to do it, like living underwater in meditative trance for a while.
rehardless of what we decide to do, we first need to git gud with our other shit, especially fire for our dragon baby.
>>
>>34828903
I wonder. Would hatching a baby dragon count as a special insight towards Fire Magic grandmastery? It seems like it should.
>>
>>34828915
Even if not, communing with one while getting an insight towards grandmastery in a volcano (or innthe Surya temple) could probably count as an actual insight by itself.
>>
>>34828903
Yep.

Though I support staying at this temple for a while. Until we have adequate levels in the various elements and some affects/metas, and until after the baby has hatched.

Then we should just dive into the sea and survive for 6 months or so. Should work.
>>
>>34828915
We'd still need to master fire and then get the other insights of fire magic up to the point where we'd need the special insight, at which point the baby may already be born.
>>
>>34828915

You extricate yourself from the group of peasants as politely as you can. “I'm horribly sorry, I really must get back to the temple. The Varistha is expecting me.” Someone calls out. “Aww, come on! The least we owe you are a few drinks for doing our work for us!” You shake your head. “I really must decline, but enjoy yourselves on my behalf!” A few persist, but by and large it seems you've turned the crowd's attention away from you and towards the copious amounts of alcohol they're about to consume. You slip away, towards the temple, while you still have the chance.

You make your way through the fortress gates and into the fortress proper, slipping through the floor hatch into the underground tunnels which lead up to the temple. By the time you reach the gardens, you find them full of happy monks drinking, eating, and talking amongst themselves. A few call out to you, inviting you to join. You note Aziz among them, apparently he holds no hard feelings. Kaur is pointedly silent, despite the fact you just did her work for her. She at least doesn't silence Aziz, improvement you suppose. You wave them off regretfully and make your way inside the temple, seeking out the Varistha's chambers. You believe that was where you were supposed to meet him.

Fortunately, they're fairly easy to find. They pair of double doors at the very end of the monk's dormitory. It's even labeled with a need bronze plaque which reads 'Varistha Sehzade'. You raise a fist to knock on the door but it simply swings open in front of you before your can rap your knuckles across the wood. Nature Vatis can really be annoying sometimes. You step through to find the Varistha sitting at a large, rather ornate desk wrought from what appears to be ice, though it shows no signs of melting. In fact, much of the room appears to be decorated by ice sculpture, yet the room is no colder than any other. Curious.

I thought we had all agreed on that already, so I didn't see the pointt in mentioningnit. On top of mental protection, we could transmute dirt into gold too.
Also, guys, we should really check up on Fulvia now, I'm getting a bit worried for her.
>>
Sehzade addresses you as you enter, the door closing behind you. “Your companions have told me of what you found. You made the right choice by not pushing further towards the island. The pirates there have been causing us trouble for decades, but the Shah refuses to step in and put a stop to their pillaging. Every vessel he's sent has failed to return or worse, ended up a part of the Pirate King's fleet.” You never even knew the northern shore had a problem with piracy, frankly. You knew it was everywhere to some extent, but not to the point that a small band of pirates was regularly and easily defeating the Shah's Navy. That seems preposterous.

“So what should we do?” The Varistha sighs. “They don't bother us. Well, that's not entirely true. They occasionally pick off a fishing vessel that strays too far into their territory. However, over the last several centuries I've become something of a legend amongst the pirate bands of the Anthosian Sea.” You squint in confusion. “For what reason?” The Varistha grins, gesturing to a suit of armor on a stand. It shows innumerable battle scars, scorch marks and nicks in the material. Of note, hundreds of golden beads dangle off of the helmet, and arms of the suit, so many that they almost look like feathers. Each one denotes a Rhynian soldier killed.

“A group of pirates came ashore and attempted to extort the temple for protection money. I put on the armor and met them outside the gates. Every single member of that band was reduced to a fine paste.” He smiles at the memory, but it doesn't reach his eyes. Good question. As Empress of the Gods, Pani is expected to provide for her subject's defense. Most temples to Pani assume this means healing the sick and wounded, as well as providing shelter for those in need. However, some temples claim that Pani has already provided her subjects with the means to defend themselves in the form of Surya's blood, that is to say Vys. Those who don't learn to master Vys and find themselves in dire straights deserve what they get for being lazy gits. Many also claim that utilizing violence to solve issues is the last resort of desperate men, and that it should require nothing more than words and faith to provide for the defense of all. There is no universal doctrine for how monks and temples ought to treat the poor and downtrodden, and whether or not they should step in to stop lawbreakers.

That would be interesting. Awesome if true, though just getting as old as he is and being sane while being as powerful as him is awesome already.

I doubt he is sane anymore, more like he went so far down the rabbit hole that he reached the "eye of the storm" so to speak, a special kind of crazy.

>>34829995
Well, he's certainly not completely sane. We can tell that just by what we've seen of him so far.

Probrably something from a spirit/void/god.
>>
>>34830019
The only thing in the pastebins about the thousand year emperor is this passage:
>A buraq is a type of mythical horse with the head of a man and strange powers. It's said that in an instant it may reach any point within its line of sight, as far as the distant horizon. It will allow those of particular virtue to ride it, but none have been seen since the Thousand Year Emperor rode upon one's back to deliver a message to his general that an enemy host was coming through the pass, leading to a massive victory for the Hiacian against the Rhynian Empire. Personally, you doubt this story's authenticity. There a a million and one stories about the miracles performed by the Thousand Year Emperor.

I wonder what he'd say if we told him about the stooges and what they do everytime someone enter that machine to test powerlevel or something.

I have been suggesting talking to the stooges and telling the old man about them for atleast 5 threads now.

There's seriously too much to ask the old man, and I doubt he'd be willing to answer as Soma does on the ask page.
>>
>>34830130
True, but talking to the stooges should happen since we can get some answers(even if cryptic), and see what we owe them.
>>
>>34830130
Eh too much right at this moment maybe, but he's probably one of the best guys to ask about them since he's both ancient and well read on the occult (the fact he identified the dead god so easily means he may have read about the stooges as well and can give some insight).

You nod solemnly. “I must say I agree with you, Varistha. The temple's primary concern ought to be to the villagers and the monks. Waging a moral crusade against piracy would only cause more pain and suffering to those the temple is trying to protect.” The Varistha sighs wearily, slouching further in his chair. He looks horribly tired. “Let us speak of something else. I have been researching the Entity that has inserted itself into your mind.” You stand just a bit straighter, paying close attention as the Shah continues.

“There was said to be an artifact within a temple in the lands that now constitute the Pa'vala which allowed one to purge their mind of any corrupting influence. Addictions, moral bankruptcy, magical influences, spirits, and even, I imagine, Gods. If you could find this artifact you would need only activate it to banish the Entity to the mist of times. Hopefully to be forgotten entirely.” Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal.

However, before you can speak the Varistha raises a finger. “There are other methods. If you could kill yourself and transfer your consciousness into the body of another, before reentering a simulacrum of your previous body, you may be able to purge yourself of the Entity's corruption, or you may simply kill yourself, or you may not kill yourself but still have to deal with the Entity's corruption.” The Varistha shrugs. “We would need an enchanted golem designed to mimic your body to make it work regardless. We'll find that nowhere unless you suddenly rediscover the lost art of enchanting.”

(1/2)
>>
You have to wonder where on Earth he even read about such an idea. That sounds completely ridiculous. “Finally, and believe me I do not like proposing this.” The Varistha clears his throat. “Should the Entity become too powerful, you will need to be put down. I cannot allow that being to once more destroy my homeland. I will do it quickly and painlessly, you will receive a proper burial. I'm sure that your sacrifice would be rewarded in the next life with more opportune circumstances.” You stare at the Varistha flatly for a moment. “Let's leave that as a last result, Honorable Varistha.”

He nods. “Of course, of course. I'm just... proposing the idea. Something to think about.” You get the feeling he'd just really rather not deal with all of the hassle, but you're just going to push forward. “I've nearly attained Grandmaster rank in Water. I'm right on the cusp. However, I've been told several times now that the last insight necessary to become a Grandmaster requires some special feat, or years of meditation. Do you have any tips as to what I might try?” The Varistha nods. “I attained my Grandmastery of Water by consuming the heart of a hydra. The real task was metabolizing the poison coursing through my veins after eating it, but I managed.” What does metabolizing mean?

“An associate of mine huffed an entire vial of spice and meditated for a week straight. When she emerged, she was changed. Where once my associate was a kindhearted, gentle woman she was now vicious and bloodthirsty, concerned only with the next battle. The next conquest. She died a week later, facing off alone against a Rhynian golem easily larger than a noble's villa. Another associate of mine lost himself in the Pa'vala and never returned. I have reason to believe he still lives, we communicate on rare occasions. However, I am not truly sure what became of him or where he is now. In the end, it is a very personal journey. How you get there and how I got there are unlikely to be wholly alike.”

You're still a little bit shocked that he ate a hydra's heart. That seems so insanely suicidal you can't even think of how to respond for a few moments. Eventually you simply move on. “What can you tell me about Centurion Armor?” The Varistha grins. “Besides how to kill a man wearing it in a dozen different ways? Nothing, I'm afraid.” Well, that was about what you expected. Moving on. “Would you care to teach me more about that Point Defense technique?” There is a pulse of magic, and you feel a strange itch inside your head. It's infuriating, but subsides quickly. “You know the technique well enough, you simply lack the talents necessary to properly use it.”

You sigh, bowing low to the Varistha and touching your fore and middle finger first to your forehead, and then to your chest. “I thank you for your help, Sehzade. I will need to think on what you've told me.” The ancient Samjan nods, waving you away. Seems you're dismissed. The double doors swing open to allow you into the hallway, but close firmly shut behind you.

From the ask page man:

>Have you ever tried writing smut to see how well it'd go? How well DID it go? Are you comfortable with writing romance and couple stuff? Can we expect those if we waifu someone? Who in the quest is most like your type?
I've written smut on a somewhat frequent basis throughout my time writing. It's been generally well received. I am perfectly capable of writing couples or simply romantic interactions in general. It's uncertain whether you'd see that sort of thing in the quest. It depends on whether or not there is demand for it and who Mikhael ends up in a relationship with, assuming he ever enters a relationship. I won't reveal my personal preferences on this matter.

no, if darzi has been hinting, shes been doing it more subtlety than Oinkbane

Speaking of Oinkbane, does Were animals exist, Soma?

>implying he'll reveal that
You should just ask if there are legends/myths about them.

thats what i love about aspiring emperor quest. smut fades to black to leave room for story and nation building, with one pastebin'd full write up for every unique scenario. keeps everyone happy, pretty much

Sometimes its annoying when some anons prioritize sex over some things.
>>

Smut in a quest, even as an aside, leads to anons having smut as a goal.

Soma HAS said that he's interested in reading AEQ, so we'll see what he thinks about tht system. I personally would have liked some more scenes with the girls once they became more comfortable/used to us, and I don't think we eer got a solo scene with Sala or Undy? Admittedly I haven't been following it for a while now.
