"Mom, one of my cards can hover, let's go to the roof and wait there in case anything happens."

Mom looks back at me like I'm crazy. Like "How can a little girl even suggest jumping off the Fortune building because she has a magic floating card" crazy. At the same time, if someone told me that was their plan I probably wouldn't believe them either.

We walk down the hallway, being careful to dodge the other monsters and beasts who seem to have the same idea, and enter the stairwell.
Just in time to see the biggest line of monsters, people, all sorts of things slowly filing one by one from the various floors.

All of them seem to also have the same idea that I do, they're all going UP the stairs and barging through the access to the roof.

On the roof, things become a bit more clear as to why everyone was suddenly interested in being up here.

The monsters are forming a kind of barricade from anyone getting into the door. Standing in front of them, on the other side of the roof-

Is the masked girl, she's fighting one of the monsters now. With an impressive somersault and a hit, she sends the monster tumbling across the roofing.

Several monsters approach her this time, this isn't good.

We should really point out at some point that she's already given herself away and that the whole masquerade thing is pretty pointless at this juncture.

She knows that CEO guy is our "dad", which is something only our friend group knows. Maeda and the masked girl have been in the same location before, which (unless one of the guys has a secret crossdressing hobby) pretty much narrows it down to Aiko.

It was already pretty obvious from the narrative, but the slip of the tongue, from the masked identity nonetheless, pretty much cements it. Plus, I kind of want to know her reasons for going about it the way she has, and what she's been doing with the cards.

I hold out Cirrus in front of me, with a flick of the wrist, I can feel the short witch outfit in front of me.

And that really short skirt replaced my dress again, ugh.

"Mom, come on, we're getting off this building."
"W-what?!"

We walk over to the edge, none of the monsters have even spotted us, they're too busy pre-occupied with the masked girl.
"Sweetie, are you crazy? What is your plan?"
"I'm going to grab you and jump down."
"BUT!-"

She looks horrified for a few seconds, before decrying any action I may have regarding that.
"NO! Absolutely not!"
"Huh?"

That's kind of confusing for me.
"Why not? I can fly with it-"
"Never! I will not allow my own daughter to jump off of a building!"

"H-Hey, Mom, it's fine! Watch!"

I hop up into the air, careful not to jump too high, and start floating around. I slowly float over the edge of the roof, taking care to not float too far away. Mom's face goes from horror, to worry, to confusion.

And then she has a blush across her face. She looks around before looking back at me.
"Honey, get down from there! Everyone can see your-"

My what?

Immediately I drop back down to the ground and hold my skirt between my legs.
Looking around, everyone else is pre-occupied with the masked girl. Good, that was a close one.

I'm not sure Mom is convinced, I try to jump off to show her that it's safe, but she only grabs my shoulder.
"No! Absolutely not! You don't know how the card works, it's not safe! And I don't want people looking at you like that."

"Okay Mom, if that's the way you feel, I won't jump off alone."
"Good."

With a squeal, I scoop her up into my arms and leap off the side of the building. Slowing our descent until we reach the parking lot.
I could have swore as we get close to the pavement, she was holding my skirt between my legs.

Landing gently, I let her stand up on her own power-
Just so she can immediately grab my ear.
"MASAMI! What were you thinking?! I was so worried about you!"

"You were falling so fast and I was so scared, and you were so high up, you put all your faith in-"

"Mom, wait right here, there's someone else you need to scold, too."

With the confused look on her face, I turn back to Fortune HQ and take another leap. Just like last night, I'm able to leap the entire height of the building with a single bound.

Landing behind the rows of monsters, I notice that their numbers have grown considerably since I was last up here.
Looking toward the door, I notice that trend isn't likely to stop. Right now the masked girl is fighting three monsters at once, and she is losing.

I'm not even going to let her try to struggle out of this one, I bound over the rows of minions and snatch her straight out from the fight. Which is a good thing too, because I just grabbed her out of the path of a very nasty axe swing.

"W-What are you doing!?"
"I'm saving you, you big dummy!"

Seriously, what was y- I should just ask.
"Seriously, what was your plan!? Get trapped on the roof while you get captured?!"
"I-I know what I'm doing!"
"Then-"

Wait.

"Then why did you get trapped on the roof when the fire alarm went off?"
I take a running leap from the roof, falling back toward the parking lot. She doesn't seem the least bit concerned on if I'm able to carry her or not.
"I didn't get trapped, you fool! I set off the alarm!"

"..Seriously? you set off the alarm? Why?"
"It.. Didn't work out the way I thought it would! But it doens't matter!"

I land flat-footed in front of Mom. She doesn't even wait for me to put her down to yank at both of our ears.

"Masami.." Her voice sounds irritated and angry for the first time I can remember. She looks over to the masked girl, "And you! Who do you think you are?!"

I grab out and nearly don't catch her in time,
but I do happen to grab that stupid outfit she's wearing. Seriously, what is the point of that thing? It just screams "I have too much time to myself".

Oh whatever.

"Hey! We're not done here yet! Why did you pull the fire alarm!?"
"Hmph."

She turns around to face us,
"Because there was something I needed inside. But it's not important now. All that matters to me."

She points an accusing finger at both of us, rude.
"Is destroying Fortune!"

"But you don't understand, I want the same thing!"
I don't think my pleading is going to convince her any.
"Oh really? If that's true, why are you there, making cards for them!?"

Seriously, she's saying that I WANT to work for Fortune? The very idea makes me sick inside.
"Don't get the wrong idea!" I yell at her, any kind of pretense of politeness completely melting away.
"I only did it because they threatened to hurt Mom!"

I don't know when I did it, but I have already ran over and hugged Mom by her waist.

Wait.

"How did you even know what I was doing in there?"
Her teeth clench, "That's not important! I'm leaving."

"Wait."
I look up, Mom has broken away from me and is approaching the girl.
"You're doing this because you're running away from something, aren't you?"

The girl looks increasingly frustrated, "No! I'm doing this because I want to."
Mom isn't believing her, "I don't think that's why you're doing this at all. Which is why-"

Mom reaches out, and grabs her by the arm again,
"-if you ever need anything, a place to stay, a person to talk to, my doors are open at any time."

The girl struggles and pulls at her grasp for a moment, but then-
She returns the hug? What?

I'm convinced now, Mom's hugs are magic. That is her magic ability is to make magic hugs. That's the only explanation that I have for this.

"I don't care who you are, or why you hide your face, or why you fight Fortune. But I do know what it's like to have to take on the world by yourself."
"W-what do you know abou-"

The girl breaks the hug and slowly turns away.
"..I'll think about it.. Okay?"

"That's all I ask, please come find me anytime."

She leaps away, but I visibly saw tears pouring down the front of her mask in the half-second that I saw her face.

"Mom, why did you make that offer to her?"
"Oh, I don't know." Mom turns back toward me. "I guess she reminds me a lot of how I was when I was younger."

What is that supposed to mean?

Okay, guys, I'm really sorry about tonight. I shouldn't have bothered trying to run tonight if I felt as completely tired as I do right now. One update per hour for six hours isn't enough for a full thread.

It's not at all impractical as long as the thread doesn't end too close to the bump limit. It just requires one or two people checking the thread's page every few hours to keep a thread afloat for a day or two.
