The sun rises, and a new day begins, regardless of the groaned protests from its subjects.

Breakfast is a simple affair, leftovers shared in a quiet circle- Now joined by wonderfully cool water, courtesy of your shield, hung from the trunk. Your family settles into a comfortable silence till the growing light urges activity.

Aria stretches, pulling limbs taut in preparation for the training to come, while Elle descends, crossbow in hand, a leisurely day of hunting ahead. The boys follow soon after, blowing the grogginess from their faces with a rush of speed to the bottom of the tree. Sara already has her book open, reviewing her notes, mouthing words and phrases as she retreads her evening's work.

You sidle up to her, glancing over her shoulder- The pages is covered in runes, carefully illustrated patterns that you can't make heads or tails of. You eloquently state as such to your smallest sister.
"I have no idea what those are."
She looks up at you, a smile forming across her lips, and gestures to one pattern.
"This is a more focussed version of the star spell- One concentrated orb instead of many. Visualizing the patterns helps casting, yes?"
"Like... Holding the mana in that pattern?"
She nods proudly.

"Yes! If you can master these sorts of things, you can shorten the chants!"
"Hmm. The star spell you used at the ruins- it took a few minutes to cast, yes? How much could it be shortened?"
"Er- w-well, if you're really good, you could probably pull it off in, uh. 20 seconds, maybe?"
"Do stronger spells take even longer, then?"
"Yeah. It's why I don't go hunting too often. If it's something I'd need magic to fight- It'd get away, or attack me first, yes?"
>>
>>34953601
"You could use web, if you were alone- and if I am there, then I will keep you safe, yes."
There's a conviction in your voice, something you've never had before. Determination, a fierce belief in your abilities. Something to protect. Sara's smile is warm, and she closes the book before wringing her hands together.
"Ah- Maybe? Maybe you could help me today? It is hard to see what spells do without something appropriate to throw them at, yes? Anything I can cast will destroy wood."

>A little later, maybe? I was going to train a bit.
>We could head to the ruins- Maybe see how deep a spell can burn into stone, or how long it takes.

I'm kind of worried that if we don't help Aria get her XP bonus increased, that she'll end up fighting against monsters too high level in her drive to get stronger.

>>
Oh yes! The first time I've participated in a live thread of RE:Monster EX.
>>
You idly scratch at your hair as you consider. The ruins would be good for something approaching research. Checking the effects of spells on stone. Different metrics as necessary. Sara would be all over that.

On the other hand... You've got that itch again. You want to see more of the forest, more of this world. More monsters, just, just, More. Getting excited over new things is something new to you. Which, in turn, gets you excited. It's a neverending cycle.

You're beginning to suspect that you might have acquired ADHD with the new body.

No, no. You're just young. Regardless of your size, you're only 21 days old now. Being curious, being hyper is only natural.
Probably.

You stuff the argument to the back of your mind and pitch the plan to your sister.
"So- What about the ruins?"
"The ruins?"
"Yes. Rocks should be a bit tougher to destroy, yes? We can try to see how deep they punch into the stones. Or how long it takes each spell to burn through."

Her grin turns a bit manic. You're not sure if you're seeing stars dancing in her eyes metaphorically or literally. Magic is weird.
"Yes, yes! We can get definites. Facts! This is good!"
"Mhm. And after, we can explore a bit further- You can try out the spells while hunting, and I'll protect you, yes."
And I'll get to see even more of the forest.
>>
>>34954595
Sara is aglow with happiness.
"Thank you! Thankyouthankyouthankyou! Let me- I'll just- I'll get my stuff. Wait! Wait here, I'll be right back!"
She tears around the nest gathering things into her bag, slinging her staff over her shoulder.
Your Mom points menacingly in your direction, switching from one finger to two as she points to her eyes, then back at you.
"Stay safe, yes? Or else."

There's a note of finality to her words. You nod frantically, trying to deflect the accusation as Sara returns.
"I'm ready! I'm ready! Yes, yes!"
She snatches your hand as she passes you by, tugging on your arm as she heads for the edge. You move with her- she's nowhere near capable of pulling you without your permission.

You descend to the forest proper, and head into the woods.

"And the Necromancer? The one that came looking for his comrade?"

"That was.... Nothing to dangerous, yes! I just charged straight past his skeletons and killed him before he knew what was happening. Also, he had far less undead then the other. I was a good Spider, we were completely safe the whole time, yes!"

"If you insist on attracting so much danger, I can at least train you to survive it, yes. Lots and lots of training, yes."

The trip goes much as it always does. You and your sister walk under web-slathered boughs, chatting about every topic you can think of. Sara tells you she managed to remember bits and pieces of what the voice said as she changed.

That it told her she had become an 'Astral Widow Arachne' and that she was now 'Embraced of the Stars'. She showed off as you walked, calling up orbs without spells, sending the searing spheres into smaller animals that crossed your paths. You shared the critter bounty, conversation dwindling as you both tore apart the snacks.

As you near the ruins, noise alerts you to danger- You pull Sara behind you without a second thought as a skeleton emerges from the bushes, bones clattering together as it moves. The monster doesn't even react to your presence, despite your preparation- its final orders to patrol taken literally. You reach out with one hand and crush its skull, the brittle bones proving to be no obstacle at all.

The ruins are much as you left them. Wind whispers through the fallen formations of stone, grass waving idly beneath a cheery sun. Shattered bones littering every square inch of grass.

Sara sets up shop in a clear bit of field, carefully arranging her books and inks on a wide, flat circle of stone. You pry up a few chunks of tile in the meantime, making sure each is about the same thickness. No point in doing the experiment wrong. You set each downwind from Sara's impromptu desk; healthy lungs or not, you have no desire to inhale a pile of rock dust.
>>
>>34955356
The experiment begins with your sister's excited clapping, and proceeds about as well as you can expect from amateur magical researchers. You find yourself assigned to counting seconds, checking each number against Sara's own.
"More witnesses is more accuracy, yes."
You'd say she belongs in a school, but you have a feeling her professors would wear out long before she did.

The regular orbs- and the free orbs for that matter- show fairly similar performance. Burning into the stones, dust flying- They won't burn out as log as she keeps them supplied with mana, but they're not particularly speedy at eating through rock.

Her new, single orb on the other hand... The heat is extreme, nowhere near the smaller spells. It engulfs the rock target, leaving a molten puddle of stone that threaten to start a wildfire. You end up standing over top of it while Sara looks on embarassedly, pouring water from your shield into the ashes and sizzling magma till it cools.

You still bury the remnants, anyway. No need to take any chances.

You relax for while as your sibling records the tests, lazing in the sun. The breeze, the smell of the forest, a sunwarmed rock. This is what being content is. You doze fitfully till she prods at your immobile form, giggling as you crack only a single eye in response. You pull yourself to your feet, cracking your neck with a quick stretch. and you both join in planning he next piece of your 'expedition'.

After a bit of work- You both agree on crossing the river. Even the town is on this side. It's time to explore. Fording is a simple matter- You're a giant spider. You walk across the river, ignoring current, slippery rocks, and other, tragically fatal for human-shaped-people-with-weak-bones obstacles.

The sky is bright, the air is clear, and all the trees are free of web. That little trill of excitement spins down your spine, and you advance straight into the new neck of the woods.

It is, disappointingly, pretty much exactly what it looked like from the other shore. The animals are the same, the trees are the same. You stop to chew a pair of rabbits that Sara cleanly nailed with her stars, using your shield like soup bowl and sipping water straight out of it. You polish off snack number two in record time and wander deeper into the forest.

With nothing sizable to pick a fight with, your mind starts to drift.
Now that you think about it- There were no flares that night from this side of the river.
So, no arachne live in this direction.
Does that mean that a different race lives on this side? It can't be the moths. They've sequestered themselves behind the spiders and the harpies. Mom told you they stick to a ring in the centre of the species hunting grounds- they eat plants and the like, so they're free to mingle with other races.

With your mind rapidly creating, and following trails of though to their conclusion, you nearly miss the creeping sensation of being followed. You call a halt, and Sara draws in, conjuring a small army of stars as she eyes the trees nervously.

Something flits between cover at ground level, circling the two of you hungrily. You brace, legs splayed, staying low, and focus on keeping the thing in your peripheral vision at least. It's a filthy gray-brown smudge, and you occasionally pick up a snarl as it moves.

It spins out of your line of sight again and you can feel it bunch up for the pounce, hurtling through the air towards you.
>>
>>34956479
Sara screams, orbs popping as she ducks, covering her head best she can- and you turn, catching sight of furry-limbed, scraggly looking young woman- Before your fist glances of her temple, spinning her twice midair and dropping her in a gangly heap.

It's a tense few moments while you pick up your hyperventilating sister. She eventually manages to calm down, and you move in to investigate your attacker.

She's young-looking; Despite the scars across her form, and a clearly broken and mis-set nose, the girl is probably only a little older than you. Her arms and legs terminate at the elbows and knees, growing into wide clawed paws and hands, thick matted fur coating them. Her hair is filthy, tangled strings coated in grime and grease, hanging halfway down her back, nearly concealing the large, triangular wolf's ears that peak through the mess. She's barely wearing any clothing, and her ribs are clearly defined beneath her sallow flesh.

You'd probably feel worse about hitting her if she hadn't attacked you.

Her breathing is shallow, but still steady- and she did take a hit, however glancing, from you. She'll probably wake up eventually...

>Wait for the girl to recover. Find out what's going on.

"But- If she wakes up, she'll-"

You place your hands on her shoulders reassuringly, and she pauses in her panic, looking up to face you.
"Sara. It's okay, yes? We are okay. I'll take care of it. Yes?"
She nods.
"Now, can you do something for me?"
"Yes- I, yes!"

She clenches her hands, nodding excitedly. You smile back.
"I need you to get some food, okay?"
"If you keep snacking, you're going to ruin your appetite."
"What- I- No. It's not for- Where did you even hear that?"
"Mom told the boys to stop eating their hunts before they came home."
"Okay, that's- Okay. It's for the wolf, yes?"

She looks over at the unconscious girl.
"Why?"
"You can see her bones through her skin, Sara. She's probably starving. I will keep her from trying to hurt us, and you go get some food, yes? And then maybe we can talk."
She looks a bit doubtful.
"Mnnn. Okay. Stay safe, yes?"
"I will. Be careful."

She turns, skittering into the woods, stars already forming above her as she hunts, and you turn back to the limp form, of the wolf girl. You don't really need anything complicated, just enough to restrain her.

You end up binding her hands behind her back, looping her arms around a tree so she can't simply take off running. You make sure to switch to regular silk, despite the difficulty in properly tying her down- You'd rather not tear out all her fur when you have to set her free.
>>
>>34956836
Do we have a ball? Cuz if we do, throw the ball. Maybe yell "FETCH!"
>>
>>34957835
The wolf's head lolls placidly, and you fold your legs beneath you as you wait. Sara isn't long; returning with another scorched pair of rabbits in hand. The wolf's nose twitches at the scent of blood and meat, and she begins to stir.

Her eyes slip open, and she takes in the sight of you and your sister surrounding her- and predictably and unfortunately advances straight to the panicked escape attempts.

She shoots upright, legs scrabbling for purchase- before her bound arms catch at the tree, feet sliding free beneath her and landing her firmly on her behind. She tugs with a futile strength at her bindings, a short whimper escaping before she slumps against the bark dejected.

Sara has positioned you between herself and the wolf, glancing around your shell at the stricken beast-girl, nervous despite the situation.

Not time like the present then.

Approach in a non-threatening manner, with weapons lowered and hands free and visible.
Offer a few calming words followed by the potential of a small meal.
If she stops trying to escape and seems to make an effort to co-operate, we can give her half of one of the rabbits, with the rest for leverage.
However, if she does not calm or continues to resist, either eat one of the rabbits ourselves Or go full intimidation mode for a few moments to give her a reason to stay on our good side...

If she is unable to talk or understand us, try drawing pictograms in the dirt...

Alright. You can do this. You don't even need a bad cop. Just food related bribery. Go.

"Hello? Yes, Hello? Can you understand me?"
The wolf's eyes flick to your face, peering through her matted hair, uncertainty across her features.
"Listen. We are not going to hurt you. Okay? We have food-"
Her ears perk at even the mention of a meal, and you drive forward. At least she seems to understand a few words.
"We'll feed you, yes? Just promise not to run away."

The wolf nods frantically, actually drooling at the thought of food- Her voice is dry, raspy, and her accent is thick.
"Yes! Yes. Promise, please."
"Okay. Stay where you are."

You shuffle forward, leaning around the creature to free her hands- She freezes at you nearness, barely even breathing as you neatly slice the silk. She pulls her arms around the tree, and you catch her wrists, pushing them together and tying them again. She doesn't even fight back, waiting limply for you to finish.

Satisfied with your ties, you lean back and place one of the rabbits in her hands.

If you though she ran fast, it was nothing compared to her eating- Bones, fur and all are crunched at mach speed, and she swallows so fast she starts to gag. You hold the shield up to her lips, filled with water- and she pushes it down, bending forward to lap at the shallow pool with a wide tongue. You will it to refill, and she spends several minutes draining it till she leans back, panting.

Her chest heaves with exertion, tongue dangling over her fangs as you consider her.
"Why did you try to attack us?"
You try to keep the edge from your voice, but the question comes out harsh regardless. The wolf-girl flinches a bit, curling her legs protectively towards her before answering.
"Pack."
>>
>>34958704
You glance worriedly towards Sara.
"You were hunting us for your pack?!"
"N-no. No pack. New pack."
Your forehead wrinkles with frustration. Her grasp of forest speech isn't particularly strong.

"You- Don't have a pack?"
The girl nods, keeping her eyes on your face all the while.
"Why not?"
She tilts her head to the side, a doglike expression of confusion, concentration. She gestures, hands tied.
"Gone. Fighting, so pack gone."

Your eyes run over her form again- The scars look like they'd match up with her own claws. A frown starts to cross your face. Sara remains behind you, silent and studious.
"Wolves were fighting each other, then? Why?"
"Only one. One alpha. Fighting for hunting ground."
"Is that why you're so hungry?"

She looks ashamed, suddenly. Dipping her head and hiding behind her hair as she answers.
"Ran. No time to eat."
You rub a hand through your hair, working your way through her monosyllable story.
"Okay. Okay. So- Your pack lost, but you ran- and you attacked us to... make us part of your pack, yes?"
"Mhm. Spiders are strong. Packs won't cross river, yes?"
"So you thought if you beat us we would be your pack? And the other pack would be afraid?"
"Yes."

"Okay, then."
You turn to Sara, still hovering over your shell and watching carefully.
"She didn't really want to hurt us, yes? It's fine."
"Mmm. Okay."
You give her an encouraging smile, and turn back to your captive.
>>
>>34958726
Hah! Foolish wolf pup You are now in Our Pack.
>>
>>34958726
You reach forward, slowly, and slice the bonds, freeing her hands. She stays seated, legs against her chest as you pull the silk free and stash it in a bag. Snagging the second rabbit, you offer it up; and she eagerly accepts, tearing into the small animal with a vengeance. Her tail thumps freely against the ground behind her as she eats, bringing a smile to your face.

You reach a cautious hand forward, through her hair- and she stiffens. Your searching fingers find the base of her ears, and you lightly scratch at them, the wolf closing her eyes, tail speeding up as she slows her chewing. She still finishes the animal in no time flat, and looks pleadingly at you till you proffer the shield again.

You watch her a little sadly as she drinks.
"Where are you going to go now, then? Will you keep trying to find a pack?"
She looks up at you with an expression you don't recognize, water dripping freely down her chin, leaving her skin pale beneath the dirt coating.
She watches you a moment longer before gesturing towards you.
"Lost, yes. Alpha."

You blink twice, face frozen.

>Okay. This is. Okay. Mom will understand. Right?
>What we'll do is- Sara will go up first. and explain the situation. She wouldn't get mad at sara. maybe.

This girl appears to be barely capable of speech. While she didn't torture us she immediately attacked us to absorb us into our pack. How is that not animalistic?
>>
Okay.
Clean the wolfgirl, take her home, and tell mom whatever you have to till she lets you keep her.
Got it.
>>
>>34959028
Seems like she wanted safety- she admitted she planned on relying on wolves being afraid of spiders to keep them away. chances are it was a suicide attack- she'd either planned on getting us to keep her safe or getting dead
>>
>>34959102
I.... I want to hug the puppy.
>>
>>34959028
She's obviously young, and probably not well taken care of by the rest of the pack.
Actually it wouldn't surprise me if she was the old alpha's daughter or something, and was run out of the pack after the death of her parent. She clearly hasn't eaten for a few days as well.

So she was on her own, and on her last legs, her attacking us was a desperate gambit to turn her life around. Where the Kobolds wanted to kill the little girl, the wolf girl wanted our help as a new pack.

All about them motives anon

You can feel it. You can feel the face Sara is wearing. Wide smile, barely repressed laughter. The wolf watches your face quietly, wrapping her arms about her knees, hugging herself tight.

This isn't fair at all. She's some little wolfdoggirl with a sad story and big puppy eyes. You can't say no and walk away- Gods, it looks like she hadn't eaten for days before this.

You pinch the bridge of your nose with one hand. Okay. This'll work. The wolves have packs- They must've been part of the big forest city. So Mom should be okay. Theoretically.

A hundred plans run through your mind all at once- promising to keep her in a little doghouse, letting sara break the news, running all the way to Jin's and just hiding until everything stops going like this.

You drop your hand and the plans, sighing. Your free hand makes its way to the wolf again, and she bends into it, letting you scratch gently, making contented little noises. She smiles up at your as you remove your hand, eyes concealed behind a sheet of greasy hair. Which is now all over your chitin.

Okay- this, this will probably work. I think."
Sara's self control slips, and a few bubbly giggles escape, her smile growing wider. You ignore her. You're older- You're bigger, at least. You can be more mature.
"First though- You're going to take a bath, yes."

She whines, deep in her throat, and you harden your heart.
"None of that. You are filthy- We'll get you clean, and Mom won't even complain about you being in the nest."
You push the doghouse to the back of your mind. She's sentient. You don't get to slap a collar on her and keep her in the yard.

You reach out and seize her hand, taking care no to squeeze too hard.
"It'll be okay, yes? Everything will be fine."
She nods slowly as she stands, holding tight to your outstretched limb.
"O-kay."
>>
>>34960514
Sara stands behind you, brushing herself off, and all three of you make for the river, the wolf easily keeping pace. She said the packs wouldn't approach the arachne's territory, but there's no need to take chances.

You reach the river in no time at all- It's a bit more work getting the wolfgirl into it. It's not so much that she's actively fighting- she seems to extend her deference to you as her alpha over everything. But she has let herself fall limp, boneless, and it is just making the whole ordeal that much more of an irritation. Your sister stands astride the riverbank, outright cackling as you dunk the shivering wolf into the river, using your silk scraps to scrub her as best you can.

She breaks the surface after a vigour scrubbing between her ears, panting for breath, and you strike, distracting her from the rest of her impending bath.
"I am Lyra, yes. And the giggling blue idiot is Sara."
"I am not an idiot!"
"She is very good at magic, but sometimes I wonder."
Sara puffs her cheeks out, turning red with frustration, and you allow yourself a laugh for one small victory.

"Sheszka. I am Sheszka."
"Then it is nice to meet you, Sheszka."
She smiles a bit, long hair plastered to her face with water.
"Yes."

Finally satisfied that she's at least mostly clean, she eagerly follows you out of the water, shaking herself halfway dry and spraying water all over you and your sister. You wrap her in dry silk, rubbing her down- She's still rail thin, unhealthy and a little too pale- but she's clean, and smiling. You take her hand in yours, and Sara seizes the opposite, and head for home.
>>
>>34960537
The wolfgirl looks confusedly at the foot of the tree, eyes searching the roots for a cave, a hole, anything to burrow beneath.
You give her a gentle smile as Sara starts up the side of the tree, and she gapes, open-mouthed as your sister crawls over the face of the tree. You scoop her up, storing your polearm over you back, and head up yourself, a wolf bundled neatly in your arms. She glances towards the ground- then swivels back, shutting her eyes tight, going stiff in your grasp.

You whisper reassurances as you clear the edge of the nest, greeting a tired looking Aria, and an indifferent Mom.
"Mom."
"Dearheart. I am glad for once, at least, that you have not dragged home the corpse of something larger than yourself."
"Er-"
"Lyra."
"Well- I- I couldn't just leave her!"
"You couldn't- What?"

She approaches slowly, looking down at your cargo. You shake the girl gently, prompting her to open her eyes, looking around the curved form of the nest.
"Lyra- One of the werebeasts? Her pack will be looking for her," She chides gently.
"Ah. Her name is Sheszka- She said her pack is gone- and she kind of, um, tried to jump sara and I in the woods?"
"Mmmn. And you beat her, yes?"
>>
>>34960574
You wince a bit.
"One punch, yes."
She gives the girl a sad sort of look, reaching out to pat her head gently.

"While it hardly pleases me that the beasts are still tearing themselves apart, I would never tell you to leave someone to die, Alpha."
You blush at the reminder as your mom smiles wickedly.
"That said- She is your responsibility, yes. Not just because you brought her- you accepted her, yes. She will follow you, and you will keep her safe."
The wolf in your arms nods along, affirming.
"Well, at the least... You will always have someone with you when you head out, then. That is a bit of worry from my mind, yes."

She looks down, speaking directly to the young wolf.
"Do not eat too much little one- especially is you have been starved. It will make you sick, yes."
She looks up, and runs fingers through your hair, gently cupping your chin.
"It is a good thing you have done, Lyra. Now come along. The boys will be along with food shortly."

You release Sheszka, letting her get her feet beneath her, though she stays near you, trying to keep your bulk between her and the edge of the nest. Elle returns shortly after, swiftly followed by the boys, and dinner is started. You spend half in quiet conversation, and the other half policing the amount of food your new packmate tries to jam down her gullet.

The girl is utterly delighted when the blankets are brought forth as everyone beds down for the night, twisting about in a blanket cocoon, curling between you and sara as the last light fades from the horizon.

It's not like they can't kill everyone you send to collect, catch their own food, make their own clothing, live in practically any environment, or make one of the most valuable commodities at the drop of a hat or anything.

Honestly, trying to place a monetary debt on an Arachne would just open you up to everyone calling you retarded.
