You scan the COFFIN readout again, noting the change in absolutely nothing.

“Penetrator, vulfhound actual's orders stant. Maintain position unt recon in force at current gridskvare. How copee, over?”

You sigh, pinching the bridge of your nose.

“Solid copy, Wolfhound. Penetrator out.”

“Not good news, sir?” Nicky says, looking back at you.

You shake your head.

“Damned shame.”
You lean back, stretching and yawning. It'd been a long day of doing nothing. Even Rockfield, in her DSO chair, was struggling to stay alert. You can't imagine how it is for Anderson and his men, outside where they could get comfortable in their hides.
“Movement right, nine hundred meters. Four dismounted infantrymen, looks like.”
Michaels words immediately perk everyone up. You check the screen and sure enough, 900 meters away, there were four man sized targets moving perpendicular to your location.

“Ey sir, you got those four targets across our nose? Nine hundred meters from you?” Anderson asks. On the readout, you watch as a series of PEQ infared lasers light up and begin tracking the targets.

“Yeah, we got 'em. Keep eyes on.”

The turret swivels slowly and slightly as Nicky turns to put the gun on the targets. You'd like to think he'd be smart enough to not engage with the Railgun, but sometimes with Nick, you never know.
After running through the usual radio protocol, announcing who you are and who you're trying to get in contact with, you end up talking to the same RTO from Whitmann's HQ.

“Penetrator, you haff been instrukted to hold your position unt recon in force. Nothink has changed. Over.”

“Wolfhound, Penetrator has four, say again, four dismounted contacts at nine hundred meters. Please advise, over.”

“Penetrator, vait vun.”

You enhance the image in your helmet, zooming in on the four targets. They weren't moving fast, but they were sticking together and making sure that they were altogether. Unfortunately, your image enhancers can't pick up uniforms or weapons, the targets being just outside of range.

“Penetrator. Vulfhound actual reqvests you maintain eyes on until further instruction. How copee, over?”

“Solid. Penetrator out.”
You contact Anderson, relaying the orders.

“Shit sir, we could snatch 'em. They're not too far. And they're alone, Corporal Ooishi has been running her thermals all day. Picked up nothing.”

You watch as a pair of T-72's drive past quickly, followed by a platoon of them. Soon thereafter, a column of tanks, ranging from T-34-85's to T-80's to what you think may have been a hellhound or two scoot past, followed by a logistics column.

“Hoooooly shit, sir.” Nicky whispers, scribbling madly.

“Yeah, I agree. Probably good we didn't shoot.”

You watch as the stragglers move past, another pair of T-72's, before the road goes quiet.
