It is a good darkness.

It is not the pitch black darkness where you don't know what might lie in waiting; it is not the heavy darkness where you can barely spy your surroundings but can never be certain what is there and what isn't, or what might just be lurking in the shadows. It is the darkness that belongs where light is sufficient in low quantities. It is the darkness you would expect to find in a place so far from yours, so alien and yet welcoming.

Monochrome and yet varied are your surroundings, where the eye of your mind allows you to see that you are within and next to the creature, its cavernous spires and slimy membranes offering many places for its countless tentacles and feelers to explore. Many eyes sprout from every wrinkle and the smooth carapace-like parts, following your steps as you confidently walk along a bridge of solid mucus up towards the gaping passage.

The multicoloured lights of many alien stars surround you as you briefly escape the welcoming cavernous insides of the creature. You have been there before, in your younger days you have played in your dreams with, within and without the agents of Ishtar, the ancient mother goddess. Today you are an adult, but in the safety of your dreams, even with the awareness that it is but your mind that is travelling, you feel like you can relish in the embrace of the mother you never met. Slimy warmth and the strange yet alluring scent of eldritch gases reaches your mind directly.

"Sister", you hear. An acknowledgement of your presence. Not actual words, it is a sound that comes from within you, for your ears wouldn't be capable of interpreting what the agent of Ishtar wants to relay to you.

"You have done well".

A feeling of warmth and satisfaction fills your whole body. You had glimpses of such sensation ever since you set foot in the Shadow Marches, and now the visit from your goddess confirms that you have done well.

"Your brothers and sisters need you". The message comes from your own head. You are directly instilled with the awareness of what you must do. It is a good feeling, there is no intrusion, you do not feel violated. You feel like Ishtar is talking to your very being through one of its many agents.

"The quelling of the Fomor threat breeds discord", along with the awareness of the message itself come the feelings of the ancient mother goddess. Concern, worry, filial piety. It is like it's your own children that are in peril.

"Discord breeds conflict. Conflict breeds war. War ends lives". You know what that means. You feel like the few distinct episodes of racism you have suffered were bad enough, but you are half human. You have no idea how it feels to be less than that and be faced with wary, possibly scared people when there is no other enemy to fight and be worried about.

"Your brothers and sisters are out in the Shadow Marches. They need your help. Do not let the humans scorn them. Do not let the humans fight them. Do not let their bloodlines be lost. They shall live on". Countless eyes of all shapes and form stare at you expectantly as slimy tentacles with ticklish feelers caress your body with brotherly skinship. The agent realizes the request is taxing and there is much that is being asked of you. Its comfort is heartwarming.

"Seek aid in your quest. Horns and stripes will lead the way. In the devourer's mouth you shall hear the whispers of love. Heed the warning of hungry pests and listen to the pleas of vermin. Quench the fires of war lest it burns all the bright feathers".

Your vision begins to twist and tunnel, many more eyes and tentacles appear within the cavernous body you came from thanks to your new perspective. You slowly fall towards them, many-fanged mouths opening to catch you. "Good luck. Sister".

You wake up with a sticky feeling, and also groggy and still a little confused as it often happens after you've been visited by Ishtar's prole. It takes a little for your mind to clear a bit, enough to remembe where you are and why you and your friends are all sleeping in one cramped common room in the second story of a seaside Inn.

It then takes you but a single look to tell the source of the sticky feeling. It's Tahenohan, drooling on her cushion in her sleep. And her cushion is your breasts. Good thing she's so amazingly lightweight or you might have had bad dreams for sleeping with someone right on top of you instead of cuddled to your side as common sense would demand. Unfortunately that's impossible since what passes for a bed here is just too small.

Everyone else seems to be still sleeping and it's just breaking dawn, casting an orange yet already bright light inside of the room, making all of the long shadows inside look lively and fresh. You already feel a little hot, though it's probably in good part thanks to both Tahenohan being on top of you and her robe being on top of her like an impromptu bedsheet. You really should make her get some underwear if she wants to stay with civilized people.

Your attentive mind also reminds you that you were supposed to leave with Nasir, the merchant from the same ship as yours, right outside of the city gates. Or at least to go and tell him that you and your friends weren't going to come. As he himself said, he was going to wait for a while and then depart in any case, but courtesy (and honour) would still demand that you keep your word.

And you'll have to slip out from under that half-elf anyways, earlier or later.

You decide against leaving a delicious golden brown half-elf that is alien to the concept of underwear alone and unsupervised. Also, if you have to go do a favour to someone and wake up this early in the morning already, you're not going alone.

You try to gently shake her, if anything to make her stop drooling on your breasts, and you summon a few muffled sounds, kind of like "Mmfmfaughafm" before she slowly blinks and she tilts her neck to stare at you with groggy eyes.

"Good morning", you greet her, still trying to not be loud enough to disturb the others: they've all worked hard the day before, into late evening. You did too, but you feel strangely refreshed, must be the visits in your dreams.

"Aufhgm...", she answers, still drowsy, and buries her face in your chest, forcing you to try and get up despite her resistance. You try your best to avoid leaving her naked for too long, but fortunately nobody is watching so she can dress back on her own without really being concerned for her modesty.

Thanks to the marvels of technology, most importantly plumbing, you have easy access to running water and something to wash your face with, and to wipe the drool on your chest too. You realize you could use a bath. You realize Tahenohan could use one too. Actually, all of you could use a bath, and spare clothes. It sure sucks being poor.

Dragging the still yawning half-elf outside of your room, you gently close the door behind you and value your options. It is still dawn, the air is still fresh, and there can't be too much people out in the streets right now. Would it be a good idea to:

>Go straight towards Nasir. You never know

Plumbing should be the norm in the kingdom of Rune, and Reboldeux should be a flourishing port city, so this place having plumbing isn't too surprising.

Now that you think about it, you wonder if the sewer system and aqueducts can take the large increase in population that the Reconquista provoked...

You decide to leave a note for your friends, in case they wake up and panic because you weren't there. You doubt they would have panicked, they probably would have just asked the innkeeper but hey, they're your dearest friends and you would feel bad leaving them behind.

You decide to concede yourself a bit of pleasure by jaywalking; since it's so early in the morning there still isn't the thick, unusual traffic that you've been swimming through yesterday. It's still a busy town, but instead of sweat the place smells like seawater and freshly baked bread, definitely much nicer. You also see that the many people of different places and cultures that wander about are interesting to look at: clothes that range from coloured silk to sober cotton with various other types of fabric.

You realize that, now that the crowd isn't trying to choke you, you can easily tell the locals from the various immigrants (you included): most locals wear airy but still decent clothes, so that they're fresh without having to strip much and almost look like they're showing off. Not that there's anything bad about it: people that have the right looks have all rights to flaunt them. I mean why not share? That'd be rude.

Tahenohan is holding your hand as she walks, at first because you were a bit afraid that you'd lose her in her still sleepy state (she must have really low blood pressure), but even now that she's considerably more awake she isn't letting go. The various skulls she adorns her hair with wobble with her hair at every step.

You really do have a bit of time, but not too much if you don't want to miss Nasir. Would it be a good idea to check out:

The inviting scent of bread attracts you to The Red Stone Oven, a bakery that made you go hungry right now, because you trust your own nose and you know what is good for you.

Unfortunately, you have to reconsider your choice. You don't have money, because you got paid with room and food for your work yesterday, and the money your friends did get is going to be needed to just plain survive in this city. Regretfully, you have to admit once again that being poor sucks and you need to find a job before being able to enjoy the pleasantries of life.

Sure, you think Tahenohan has something valuable in her bag, but you're not sure how much of that is junk, how much has an actual value and whether she's attached to any of that. Also, you're not sure whether she has any money that will be accepted, so you can't really rely on her.

Sighing, you quicken your pace to leave the bakery behind you before the scent becomes too tempting. But you will be back there. One day.

After taking it easy, you reach the eastern gates. They are guarded, but the guards themselves are relaxed: there's two on each side both inside and outside of the barbican, with a few more on the walls, though it doesn't look like any of them is expecting trouble.

Not far outside the walls proper, you see Nasir right next to his small caravan, brushing the horses. You approach him and wave your hand, and he waves in answer.

"Good to see you again", he offers you a smile. There is no makeup on him today, as he's going to be travelling instead of talking, "So are you going to come?".

"I'm sorry, I won't", you just couldn't ask your friends, and it's a bit too sudden of an option, especially considering Zillis. Had you a sureway to ensure a future for all of them out in the wilderness, it might have worked...

"I see. Don't worry", he smiles again, "I did find another companion, in any case".

"An artisan I met in the Chamber of commerce yesterday, not long after you left", he looks towards his own caravan, "Should be in there with her son- ah, there she is".

The door opens and a young woman climbs out. Contrarily to what a trip to the wilderness would suggest, she is wearing a layered skirt, green and black, and a small top hat, along with a walking staff. It must be Prontera fashion, although it's surprisingly practical.

"I'm sorry, he was still a bit sleepy. Oh, hello there!", she greets you with a wide smile, "Is she another of our merry company?".

"Sadly, no", you inform her, "I would love to come but my friends and I are still struggling to make money and right now, Reboldeux is where we have the most chances", you pause, and look at both of them, "Where were you going, again?".

"We're going to follow the military expedition", Nasir claims, "I want to set up shop and supply them with general goods before someone else can come and steal this market from me. And she...".

"I'm a cocoa specialist", she smiles proudly, tipping her hat.

"Seeing how we're going to stay around here, how do you suggest we try and make money? We need to make plenty and don't have much time", you skip the details, but you should get in a good economic situation before Zillis gives birth, at the very least.

"Mh... Have you considered getting an exploration charter at the Duke's palace?", Nasir suggests, "If you're the adventurous sort, you might get some good money by participating in such endeavours. If you're not inclined to risk that much, I hear they're looking for censors; there's been many people coming lately and I'm sure the Duke wants to be kept up to date with the population".

"How is cocoa going to help you?", you ask. You know it's an import food and not available on a daily basis, but even someone as destitute as you and your lot had the pleasure of eating chocolate a few times.

"Easy", the woman says with a confident smile, "Up until now there were three places where you could get cocoa from: Ayotaya, Al De Baran and Reboldeux", she counts off on her fingers, "Now that the Shadow Marches are going to be taken again, we'll have people working the fields and foraging in the jungles, and we'll get plenty of cocoa amongst other things".

"Which means she'll get first and cheap access to all the base materials she needs", Nasir finishes, and the woman smiles.

"By the way, I'm Delphine", she shakes your hand, "I hope you'll hear from me in the future. Have you ever had mint chocolate before? Nasir here has plenty of mint in his stocks, I'll try to make it into a big hit when I set up my shop".

Mmmh, mint chocolate sounds good.

"Is it going to be safe, though?", you ask with a bit of concern, "Isn't it a full week to get to the advance camp?".

"Oh, it's safe. They're starting to build inns along the way already. As soon as the roads are built there'll be plenty of traffic, and most of the dangerous critters have been exterminated", Nasir sounds rather confident.

"Where do I need to go to become an explorer or a censor?", you then ask.

"Go to the Duke's palace. The public offices are open until the sun goes down and it's a pretty place to visit too, if you appreciate art and architecture. I'm afraid I can't help you more than this", Nasir says.

"Oh, by the way", you ask before seeing them off. You furrow your own brow as they stare at you, and consider whether you really should ask or not, but then decide to just go ahead, "Have you seen anyone sporting horns or stripes coming your way?".

They look at you the way anyone would look at you if you had asked the question you just asked. You can't really blame them.

"I did", Nasir then surprisingly says, surprising even Delphine, "It was while you were inside", he informs her, "There was a woman with a staff and large horns leaving town on foot, followed by... A... Young... Person. Probably... A familiar of sorts".

You remain in silence a little bit. Well that was unexpected, "Oh, I'm not sure who she was though, I'm sorry".

"Maybe an explorer?", Delphine raises her eyebrow, "You should ask at the Duke's palace, maybe they know something. It sure beats asking two strangers like us".

You then hear a bit of commotion behind them, in the distance. Looking away, you see that outside the walls, some guards are dismantling and breaking down a few wooden tenements. You hear one of them saying, "No tenements outside the walls! Duke's orders", to a few hapless people.

Talk about overpopulation.

You bid the two merchants farewell. Tahenohan has been oddly quiet but she's awake. Unlike Mires, you guess that she can keep her mouth shut when she doesn't have anything particularly interesting to say.

As Nasir and Delphine leave in search of monetary gains, you decide to approach the commotion and investigate.

Outside the walls, the land is lush and green, with farmland starting not far from the fortifications themselves, full of growing peas and red beans, with probably more varied cultivations in the distance. What the local guards, wearing a breastplate over the red and blue uniform of the Reboldeux town guard, are busy taking down a wooden tenement, though you see they're trying to not break the wood too much, as if they intend to recycle the material.

"But there's no more room inside the town!", you hear the poor plead against what seems to be the leader of the four-man squad, who is holding a halberd but with apparently no immediate intention to use it (fortunately). His look is stern and possibly a bit irritated, "Where are we going to live if we can't build our homes?".

"Build them elsewhere!", the man sternly remarks, "You have the entire Shadow Marches at your disposal! Go reach the other colonists and start a farm or something, nobody's stopping you from doing that".

"But we're no farmers, we're artisans and labourers! We have to work here!".

"Duke's orders!", the man insists, "I'm sorry, but this is the law. Now please disperse or I'll be forced to take you in".

The commoners still grumble, but they know better than to try the law. Being without a home still beats being in jail. It's not a nice place to be in.

"Excuse me", you ask, trying to not sound threatening. Angering the town guard on your second day in Reboldeux would be terrible for your general state, possibly your health too, "Is there a problem?".

The guard turns first and you almost see him jolt, tightening his grip on the halberd. He does his best to relax, however, letting out a frustrated sigh. "Didn't you just leave a moment ago? I was told a magic user with a demon was going to leave town this dawn. Or is it you?", he asks Tahenohan, visibly unsure on whether he really wants to strike up a conversation with a half-elf.

"Nope", she answers, shaking her head and then smiling, "I'm no demonologist, I'm actually a-".

"It's not us", you interrupt her before she forces you to do a lot of fast talking, "And I am not a full demon anyways. I was just wondering if there was a problem here".

"They're not letting us build our homes!", the commoners behind protest, as if you're their saving grace, but the guard turns and motions sternly, "Quiet, I said!".

He then turns again and motions for you to back off, "Nothing to see here, don't start any trouble or you might regret it".

"I don't want to start trouble, I just wanted to know why an immigrant can't build a house".

"Because of the Duke's orders", the guard repeats, "No tenements outside town, and the inside of Reboldeux is full to the brim. The town isn't ready to expand on a whim just because there's a bit of tourism going on. If you want to help with the Reconquista, go colonize the rest of the Shadow Marches, there'll be no more homes here and this is final!".

The commoners keep protesting, but you doubt their pleads are going to do much. You also see the other guards lifting some wooden boards to carry them away. They really are going to recycle that wood.

"Why did the Duke order no tenements? Isn't it better if Reboldeux grows?", you ask.

"Why are you asking me? If you have a complaint, file it! Don't bother me!", you feel like you're trying his patience.

"Oh, but this means he plans to order the construction of more houses, right? Like, let the town grow during this time of peace and then build another set of walls?".

"Oh, you're smart aren't you?", the guard offers you a sarcastic smile, chuckling even, "Look lady, I'm just a man doing his work. If you're this clever you're certainly a politician. So why don't you go bother the Duke himself at his own palace? Go ask for an appointment, talking to me is pointless".

He does have a point. You wanted to give the people watching the scene some hope for them, but you have to admit he cannot change the laws or do anything about them. Heck, not enforcing them would land him in trouble.

"But there's no problem at all building settlements outside, right?", you ask, and as the man rolls his eyes you realize that's the last question he's letting you ask.

"Yes", his voice is tired even if it's just dawn, "Now, for the last time, stop asking me stupid questions. Take this talk to the Captain of the People if you need someone to listen to you, I'm done with you lot".

He then leaves, along with the rest of the guards, and you decide you really should let it go this time. There's absolutely no reason to get in trouble over this, especially not in your situation. You have friends to help out and money to gain.

Still, if you can't have a home for yourselves, that's going to be difficult. You have no idea how you're going to break these news to Lucas and Zillis, who are expecting a child.

With still a glint of hope in his eyes, one of them looks up at you, "Oh, it's Marrican the Rockwise. You can find his house in Saint Gerome street, it's the one parallel to the street behind the Duke's palace. You can tell his house because it has a large balcony on the second story with crawling plants, the flowers should be in bloom this time of the year".

"It's pointless, Geoff", another says, shaking his head, "The Duke's stubborn and he's too busy filling his pockets with the profits from all the business booming here".

"Why doesn't he want you to build homes outside of the walls?", you ask, hoping they might have an idea.

"Because the Shadow Marches are going to get a new Marquise", another informs you, "A Royal Messenger passed by a couple days ago, to bring the news to the advance military camp. I hear the candidates are out there fighting for our safety and to give us more land".

You see where this is going, but you decide to inquire further, "So... He doesn't want more people here because once the first rush ends it's going to be a problem, and he encourages you to leave because...".

"Because technically, we're not under his jurisdiction any more", a woman finishes your sentence as she spits on the ground, "We're tax money while we have it, and someone else's problem when we're out of luck".

Well, at least now you know what's up...

"Don't lose hope, as long as you're alive you can still do something", you don't want them to lose hope. Seeing other people in a situation similar to yours just lose their will at this stage is disheartening. You think you're identifying with them a little, even if your situation is a bit different, "I'll try to talk to the Captain of the People about this, okay? Maybe we can find a solution".

"He can't do anything about it", then one of the group frowns, "And who are you, anyways? Why would he listen to someone like you?".

"You're listening to me right now, aren't you?", you offer them a confident smile, "You know, if the Duke is treating you like this, you really should leave. You're doing yourselves a favour by not giving him tax money. Besides, what are the chances that the new Marquise will be worse than him?".

"But we're no farmes. We're artisans and-".

"The new colonies are going to need artisans and labourers too. In large quantities", you insist, "I just waved goodbye to a couple that was planning to use ordinary plants you can find anywhere nearby to start whole enterprises, I'm sure people with your skills will be able to help build new towns. They're going to need everything: tools, homes, plumbing, water supplies... You must know something about these, you were building a house a while ago, right?".

The group considers your words for a moment, looking at each other and bumbling, muttering something under their breath. "We... We'll give it a serious thought", one of them finally says.

You know this is the best you can hope to accomplish right now, but it's already something all considered. "Good", you smile, "Leave the rest to me".

As a matter of fact, you should:

Even if you promised to help the commoners by talking to the Captain of the People, your real objective was to get them to leave and look for fortune elsewhere, which you believe is the most convenient solution for them. You still intend to talk with that man, but you have to take care of your own situation as well.

The Duke's Palace is a lot more majestic than the Chamber of Commerce: the guards are dressed differently, in ornate armour and dressed in red and gold instead of red and blue, standing at attention and letting you, along with plenty other people, pass unhindered in the public offices.

There are no open stalls, there are booths instead, divided by competence, and there are helpful signs for your navigating convenience. You also see an impromptu stall with a very helpful sign that has been clearly scrabbled together in a hurry compared to the rest. It reads: "This way for charters".

You decide to go there and you find surprisingly few people in the small room that must have been a waiting room before. A table turned into an improvised counter is set beneath a pair of high windows that let the pleasant morning sunlight fill in; a man is sitting behind it, drinking something that looks like tea from a large cup and eating fresh bread, which explains the scent. A young lady is behind him, messing with some papers in a shelf.

As he sees you, the man pulls out a handkerchief to wipe his mouth. There mustn't be very many people looking for charters, or maybe it's just a lazy morning. "Greetings", he offers after he gulped down the bread he was chewing, "My apologies, is there anything I can help you with?".

You can ask both questions, though I'd rather you ask one or the other first.

Since it's important: You don't have to go through any of the two options, you'll have the choice to ask about the other too before going through. Or deciding to go for a third option. Or whatever.

So don't worry, you won't be put on rails A or rails B at this point in time.

"I would like an Exploration charter", you confidently claim. The man is taken aback a little, as if not expecting such a bold statement this early in the morning, but quickly recollects himself.

"Ah, uhm, sure miss. The King of Rune has given our Duke permission to sign Exploration charters for the yet unknown lands to help with the Reconquista. Any able-bodied adventurers and cartographers are encouraged to- Well, you know the drill, I'm sure", he smiles, stroking his short beard as he turns towards the younger girl, "Could you fetch me the papers? We have a potential explorer".

As the girl leaves, you turn to listen to the man again, "The only requirements to be an explorer is to be able-bodied... Which you seem to be, to not have criminal records in Reboldeux... Your name, miss?".

"Lillith", you tell him, "With two ls".

"Lillith, eh? I'll see- Lie!", he calls the girl, "Check if we have something about a certain Lillith on record". He turns his attention back to you then, "Are you a cartographer? We're going to need that as well. If you can't, we can write you in the register anyways, and when we will try and organize you in a team next time a cartographer without company of his own asks for a charter".

"I also heard you are looking for censors", you inquire.

"Ah, yes. Censors. It follows the same procedure, really, except you don't have to draw maps. You can read and write, can you? That's good enough", he smiles, "It's considerably easier and safer, but you have to travel a lot. Unfortunately we can't supply horses or pecopecos, so you'll have to walk if you don't have one yourself".

"What would I need to do?".

"Travel to all the new colonies and count up the people, really. Write down their names, their sex, their age, and you're set. Then come back and we pay you for your services. You get paid per town, depending on the population".

While you are talking to the man in charge of the charters, you spy Tahenohan looking at the portraits on the wall, gawking like a tourist to the point the secretary girl, Lie, approaches her, possibly to check whether she's okay.

"Who's that man?", Tahenohan points out as soon as she senses someone next to her, which kind of scares the girl a little. Damn half-elves and their weird senses!
"Uwen the Red. Conqueror and founder of Reboldeux", the girl explains, "It's a portrait commissioned by Queen Octavia herself about two hundred years ago, during the first conquest of the Shadow Marches".
"Oooh, and what's that?".
"That is a scene from the battle of Rock Pass. It happened seventy years ago, during the sixteenth Fomor wars. I don't remember the medusa's name, though".

Being given both options, you feel yourself a lot closer towards the exploration front. After all, you suspect that the brothers and sisters your goddess wanted you to find don't exactly stick around civilized areas.

"Will I be given maps and tools for exploring? Or do I have to bring my own tools?", you ask.

"I'm sorry but we're not giving out tools. Not after the first rush of people that wanted the advance payment and then left. Since our Duke doesn't like his jail to be full, we decided to just cut this small benefit, I'm sure you understand".

You do, which is even more irritating because you kind of own nothing but the clothes you're wearing.

"So, if I sign up for an Exploration charter, will I be put in a waiting list? And how do I know if a cartographer came around looking for a team and I am needed?".

"You'll have to come check yourself, I'm afraid. Just drop by once or twice a day if you're really eager. Late morning and late afternoon would be most indicated, we'll put you in touch with each other and you'll decide if you want to go with them or not".

It seems like they have some rough team-coordination going on. You were sort of expecting there to be more explorers, but then again all of the adventurous folks are likely following the military expedition, which should have always been outside of the Duke's jurisdiction as they answer directly to the King. After all, he does have part of his Royal Army working towards the Reconquista.

"How long do you expect this will take?".

"There's no way to tell. You could be lucky and bump into a cartographer as you leave, or you could have to wait for a week".

"What about working as a Censor? Would I be given an area or...?".

"Well... Between you and us?", he looks around a bit and then leans forward before whispering, "... You'd be the first. But don't tell anyone I told you!".

"Wait a moment", you frown, and then lean closer yourself, since apparently this shouldn't be a known thing, "... Why are there no other censors? I thought it was something important, keeping tabs on population".

The man looks around, then leans to peek outside in the main room and leans over further to push half of the wide open doors a little more closed. "Look, I don't know who told you we're looking for censors, but... It's not really something we publicize".

"Is it because once the new Marquise is nominated it technically won't be the Duke's problem too? And he won't have to pay them either if no one gets hired before the Marquise does?".

He just sits there, staring at you, mouth agape. The unsuspecting girls in the room are still chatting amiably. Or rather, Tahenohan is sitting on the large, red-cushioned sofa and making comments about how it's soft and fluffy and has the colour of blood and she once sat in a pool of blood this deep and it was hilarious because she didn't have to kill the monster herself though the blood was cold when she arrived so maybe it wasn't as fun.

"... You didn't hear that from me, okay?", the man makes a worried smile.

"I did not".

"Because I would never say anything like that".

"You certainly wouldn't".

"And you're too smart to go say that in public, too".

"So, can I do both?".

He pauses again, then sighs and facepalms, suddenly feeling very tired even though it's still morning. "... It would be difficult. But... If you don't take too long and only explore the area surrounding a new settlement and do the censoring while your cartographer works...".

"It can be done, right?", you offer the most Cheshire-catesque smile you are capable of.

He sighs, facepalming with both hands, "... I... I guess I can arrange that".

"Well, since I don't get any advance pay... Deciding he isn't going to argue with you any longer as he'll just be thoroughly humiliated in the fast talk department, he snaps his fingers towards Lie, who is glad to jump at an excuse to get away from the nonsense-talking half-elf barbarian. "Lie, could you get me the papers for the Exploration charter and the Censor abilitation?".

"Both?", the girl asks raising an eyebrow.

"Yes, we are in front of a very productive member of society". She isn't sure just how ironic he is being, but then the girl decides it's his job and his problem and goes fetch the required papers. Damn bureaucracy for getting in the way of everything.

"So... Your name, again?".

"Lillith, with-".

"With two ls, yes. You don't have a last name?". You actually don't, you lived in quite a backwater place and never had a real family. But then again your friends don't have last names either. In rural areas such as those you were born in, first names and the father or mother's names are all that's needed.

You shake your head, and he sighs, "I'll need something to put in the last name. Not even an origin name? Your place of birth?".

"Lillith Taieart", you then claim, feeling a bout of pride into your chest as you offer your surname, that you just made up, and it gets written down in an official document. Since bureaucracy is what it is, you are now officially Lillith Taieart.

Oh boy you'll have to boast to your friends about this.

"Very well, Lillith Taieart", the man sighs, "Sign here, and here. Aaaand welcome to being a censor and an explorer, I guess. As you said yourself, there is no advance pay for either of the jobs, so while I'm glad you have come to a satisfying situation, you won't get anything out of it until you return with something to be paid for".

"No problem", you invested in your future, which means a lot to you and your situation, "So, I have to come back and see if there's a cartographer available later, right?".

"Late morning. Or late afternoon. Or both if you're really eager", he finishes compiling a few more papers and Lie brings him some more. You didn't expect back office paperwork to be so detailed. You wonder what he's even writing, "If you're half as lucky as you're good with words, you'll have someone waiting for you".

"Thank you, I'll come back later, then". With a thankful smile and a wave, you take Tahenohan with you and leave the Duke's Palace.

My, that was a satisfying turn of events! Not like yesterday, where you spent most of the time split between being deluded that improvising yourself as a merchant won't work and then working your back off as a barmaid to pay for your lodging.

Well, whatever works I guess. It's the QM's decision after all.
>>
You promised the people you've seen outside the walls you'd pay a visit to the Captain of the People, and you're feeling in too much of a good mood to go back on your word and disappoint someone.

And since it's still morning, why not? Stroll a little around town with Tahenohan while the streets begin to fill up with people. Unfortunately, it gets very crowded very soon, which spoils the feeling of freshness you had before. You wonder if the streets you walked through this morning are what Reboldeux was like before the whole Reconquista deal. It certainly felt like a much better, more relaxing, cleaner town and it's a bit of a pity that it's so overcrowded right now.

"So you have a last name? That's cool!", Tahenohan trots at your side, sticking close to you so as to not lose you amongst the crowd.

"You don't have one?", you wonder. You never asked, in fact.

"Nope, just my name. But it's a cool name so it's okay", she smiles brightly, staring at you with her aquamarine eyes, "Still, I'm a bit jealous. I wonder if I should get one too?".

>"You probably should, let's think of one for you"
>"You're fine as you are, you don't need no last name"
>"You can always share mine, we just need to get married"
>"Is there anything you'd like to do or see before we visit the Captain of the People?"
>>
>>35093581
>"You're fine as you are, you don't need no last name"
Yet.
>>
>>35093462
Just to be clear: I don't particularly care to write down the exact size of Lillith's breasts nor the length of her dick. I am more interested in details that are more important in scenes that won't be fading to black anyways.

But we'll save this for after we finish running this episode.
>>
>>35093581
>"You can always share mine, we just need to get married"
I don't even want to be forward, but how could I resist?
>>
>>35093581
"Tahenohan Taieart, mine seems to fit well with yours too."
"Maybe we could share at some point?"
And
>"Is there anything you'd like to do or see before we visit the Captain of the People?"
>>
>>35093581
>"You're fine as you are, you don't need no last name. Tahenohan is great, does it mean anything?"
>>
>>35093607
To clarify, most people are arguing about appearance in general, rather than dick size, or exact breast measurements.
But you're right, later is the time.
>>
>>35093581
I'll back >>35093628!
>>
>>35093581
>Is there anything you'd like to do or see before we visit the captain of the people?
>>
>>35093628
Second
>>
>>35093581
>"You're fine as you are, you don't need no last name"
Yep.
>"You can always share mine, we just need to get married"
We can say this one jokingly. But we can consider it if she takes it seriously.
>>
"I don't mind your name. Tahenohan... Does it have any particular meaning?".

"Oasis walker", she explains, "It implies wet feet, but it doesn't translate well in Midgaardian".

You presume so. Whatever language they speak in her land of origin must be quite weird. "Still, if you want a last name you might as well share mine. I think Tahenohan Taieart fits pretty well".

You decide to tease her and gauge her reaction, and she seems to be actually thinking about it, "Really? Can we share? Is that how it works?".

"Sure", you smile, "All you have to do is marry me".

"Eeeeh?", she looks amused, almost to the point of laughing, "What, marrying people copies the last name over?".

"Isn't that how it usually works?".

"Is it?", she blinks, somewhat confused, "I thought two people remained separate even if married. I don't think they share the same last name".

"I guess it's a cultural thing then. In many places, either the husband or the wife takes the other spouse's name. It depends on the place and social relevance, usually". In fact, where last names are common, they don't get shared through marriage, but only one gets through the children, and there's a very detailed set of laws that decides which one, but that's irrelevant in your case. But you assumed that if one party has no last name they'd get the other and it'd be automatic.

You however didn't consider that Tahenohan is, in fact, a barbarian.

"I didn't know that", she admits, pondering the issue, "Mh, but is it worth for just the last name? I think marrying is for other reasons. And why would we? We're not fairies".

Fairies are the only all-female monster race that doesn't steal men from others (almost always humans) to reproduce, unlike harpies or mermaids. You're not sure how it works, but you've been told it's icky.

You get what she means.

>"Nevermind, it was just an idea"
>"I'll give you some time to think if you want"
>"Actually... That's not a problem"
>Other?
>>
>>35093859
"For what sort of reason would you marry someone then, Tahenohan?"
>>
>>35093859
>"You're right about that, you shouldn't marry someone just for their name. But you're not in a hurry, right?"
>>
>>35093859
>"I'll give you some time to think if you want"
>>
>>35093859
>"Actually... That's not a problem"
>"I'll give you some time to think if you want"
>>
>>35093859
>"Well I wouldn't marry just for a name myself at least, and I've not heard of anyone doing so outside of marrying into nobility or the like. What kind of criteria would you use when evaluating a potential marriage-partner then, Tahe?"
>>
>>35093944
>>35093904
>>35093894
Second
I think we're going a bit too fast, but alright.
>>
>>35093953
I don't really want to marry her, it's way too early. I think the conversation makes for a nice way to learn more about her/elves though.
>>
>>35093953
Yeah... It kinda is happening a bit too fast. We don't have to do it now, but we can atleast plant the idea in her head, so she might be more receptive of it later.
>>
"Well, marrying someone for the name is a bit off, I'll give you that", you can't argue with half-elven logic. Especially not for once that it coincides with actual, real people logic, "What would you marry someone for?".

She seems to be giving your questions a serious thought as she swims through the crowd with you. You make a point of taking a detour and use alleys to avoid the most traffic. You also avoid stepping on the merchandise spread over impromptu stalls. Not even the alleys are private any more.

"Isn't marriage something for life? Ahahaha!", she laughs herself at the idea, "I'm sorry, I don't think it actually happens. Life is long! And just one partner is... Eeeeh, I don't know. I'm going to live long, you know?".

She's right. You have no idea how long you're going to live. You really should find someone that knows a fair deal of things about demons and ask.

"So... You would marry for what?", you insist, smiling to entice her into answering.

"Mh. For children? It would make sense to bind someone to help you with that. I mean that's what people usually do when that happens", she nods to herself, as if speaking from personal experience, "But that would exclude you", she then frowns.

"My, I wonder...", you give her a sheepish smile, "I might have an ace up my sleeve, who knows".

She blinks, staring at you without really understanding what you meant, and you just leave her hanging as you head towards the Captain of the People's house. You're not sure if it's going to do anything, but you did promise, and you have a bit of a social justice agenda to push forward. In a way.

Thank you for running with me again! My, I'm starting to get cocky and think I can actually be a QM!

Ha ha. I'm sorry. We'll close here because I'll have to go to bed earlier or later if I want to actually wake up in the morning tomorrow.

I hope I gave the feeling of accomplishing something at least this time. I realize my games are always slow to start and slow to get anywhere, and between the character limit and everything I'm afraid this quest might suffer from that as well.

I'll stick around for a while in case you have anything you'd like to discuss.
>>
>>35094105
You're doing a lot better than other new QMs, I'm really enjoying it so far.
>>
>>35094105
Thanks for running!
Looking forward to starting our censure/adventuring.
>>
>>35094105
Thanks for running. Liking the quest so far.
>>
>>35094062
What, even sleeping ON us she didn't notice our extra something? Well, it'll have to be a surprise then.
>>35094105
I'm having fun at least. Felt like this thread had more direction than the previous ones too. Any idea when you can run next?
>>
>>35094105
Yes, we're definitely getting shit done now. It's about to pop off with the captain, I think. Looking forward to the next session.
>>
>>35094179
>What, even sleeping ON us she didn't notice our extra something?
Maybe she was sleepy and distracted or thought your underwear was made that way. There's no telling what goes in a half-elf's head.

>Any idea when you can run next?
I know for sure I won't be able to run this friday, and I'll be busy all weekend. Maybe monday? My fridays are cursed and I usually have stuff to do wednesday. I'll try and make mondays more regular but I can't promise anything.
>>
>>35094236
Alright, we'll have to wait warmly then.
>>
>>35094236
The appearance issue may persist later on, so I'd suggest writing up a proper description.
Whether you decide it, or whether you leave it up to us to decide, is your choice.
>>
>>35094304
It's not really a big issue...
>>
>>35094331
You have NO idea how autistic /tg/ gets over this sort of thing.
>>
>>35094105
QM why must you make Tahenohan so adorable. It just makes me want to waifu her so hard.
>>
>>35094347
I'm trying to maintain my composure but it's bothering me in the back of my head.
>>
>>35094356
Does imagining her as >>35092196 help?
>>
>>35094372
I've been imagining her like that from the start. So yes, it does indeed.
>>
>>35094304
Oh, right.

I'll be archiving the thread, but before that: I'm personally satisfied with the description we have. It's generic enough that I don't have to reference specific parts of the main character every time or worry about NOT referencing them.

There are only two instances where I could use knowing something more than you can help me out with:

- The colour of her eyes.
- The shape of the horns. Placement, length, general shape.

Knowing these two details that weren't set before could actually help me out. Everything else, it's your headcanon.

>>35094356
Because why not. When I throw NPCs like that at my players they just either ignore them, think they're almighty gods of destruction just because they're girls or just feel annoyed for no reason I can discern, so I'm glad you're liking her.

>>35094385
Yeah, me too, how'd you guess that was my reference? Was it the skulls on her hair?
>>
>>35094408
I'm not that anon, but the skulls on her hair was the big thing for me.
>>
>>35094408
Her hair wasn't described either you know.
But for conveniences sake, I suggest we go with >>35093033 >>35093134 >>35093178
For the hair/eyes/horns
>>
>>35094408
>Yeah, me too, how'd you guess that was my reference? Was it the skulls on her hair?
Wel, it does help that I saw the source material of where that image came from recently, so the intial interractions with Tahe just sorta clicked.
>>
>>35094449
Whoops, forgot about the hair. Yeah, deciding on that would help too.

Oh, and I'll say this and it'll be set in stone: no retconning over chargen. What was decided then will stay.
>>
>>35094449
I'm not a fan.
Prefer >>35091999 for horns, and something fairly normal for eyes. Maybe green.
>>
>>35094496
It's fine, I think we're at peace with our futa tiefling.
>>
>>35094496
I don't really think anything more is necessary.
>>
>>35094496
I'd agree with >>35094449, convenience would be best.
>>
>>35094669
Those designs are so shit though.
I'd prefer no image used for our looks at all, please.
>>
>>35094538
Glad to hear that.

I might be excessively inured to 4chan and Japan, but frankly, futa doesn't even register as weird to me any longer. When the MC turned out to be a futa tiefling I was just "Okay".

I witnessed way worse characters being brought to a tabletop game. And I couldn't even say "Well at least it's lewd and it's a magical realm game so yeah".

>>35094574
I don't strictly need any more than we have and I'd rather just leave everyone to their own headcanon than risk splitting people in unnecessary debates.

But, if people can be civil enough and come to a consensus to flesh the character out a bit more then I won't mind. I'm not against more detail either, especially for the parts left unmentioned.

Heck, I won't even hate it if someone decides to drawfag something.
>>
>>35094693
It isn't about an image used for looks though, it's just an image to describe the eyes/hair/horns, nothing else.

>>35094710
>and it's a magical realm game so yeah".
It was?
>>
>>35094725
I don't like the goofy horns either really.
>>
>>35094710
I'm not expecting much consensus and some people might have left already and won't get a say. There's no need to vote on it, either leave it ambiguous or just pick something.
>>
>>35094735
I don't particularly like the goat-like horns in >>35091999
It doesn't matter too much though, it's just two horns.
>>
>>35094725
>It was?
It wasn't. The point is: I've seen bad, terrible, boring as all fuck characters to the point I'd rather someone bring lewdbait and try to turn my games into magical realm than deal with yet another grimderp assassin or warrior of few words or library-bound wizard. With absolutely no character development past that.

>>35094760
I know /tg/ and I'm not expecting much consensus either, but hey, I might have been surprised, who knows?

Seriously though, considering I already have few people following me and none of this is really too important, I'll likely decide something myself unless some kind of consensus comes out at a later date or someone drawfags something amazing or suggests something I really like. Or something.

That is: I'll be happy if it eventually gets decided, but it doesn't have to be now and doesn't have to be at all. I'll find another way.
>>
>>35094831
>It wasn't. Ah, I'd agree with that. We've ended up with a fun character anyway, besides, our half-elf friend wouldn't marry us without our special surprise from what we've heard anyway.
>I'll likely decide something myself
I'd support that, just make it true to the chargen and nothing too extreme, and leave details that will only come up in FtB, to the FtB

Eh, this is not a bad idea, it's something I can use outside of FtB situations, just for fun.

Though I don't know about the horns. The tail: certainly. Horns don't strike me as something that would be particularly sensitive unless we want to make a special case of unusual stimulation for this?
>>
>>35095167
Dude, where do you live? 5'10" is closer to 1.8 metres. That's tall as fuck for a woman.
>>

>>
>>35095168

>>
>>35095168
Have them get more sensitive as they approach the tips of the horns, while the base is relatively unsensitive
>>
>>35095190
Really? Huh.
Alright then.
>>
>>35094995
I understand that there is some note of the rituals in there, however what I meant is, could you elaborate on Lillith's part IN them?
>>
>>35095387
Oh, that.

Well, you're the one that has the actual power to make sure they work as intended. You're the one that has to collect and spread the blood if you want to fertilize soil, and you're the one that has to collect the blood and make the body paint and apply it if you want to fertilize people.

If you're asking about the latter case: you don't have to participate in the ensuing sex. Unless everyone is okay with you joining. In which case you'll have to apply the body paint to yourself as well. Otherwise, your job is done as soon as the sex begins.
>>
>>35095456
Alright, I just remember a discussion in /qtg/ where people didn't want us quite ending up like Maka from Exalted Quest, rather wishing to keep us monogamous, rather than having hundreds upon hundreds of partners.
Oh and, does the sex HAVE to result in impregnation? and is the interest in interracial breeding from Ishtar, or from the cults?
>>
>>35095456
What sort of power has ishtar given us anyway? just supernatural charm or someshit?
>>
>>35095502
The cult of Ishtar furthers Ishtar's own goals, and it's said that the existence of monsters capable of breeding with humans is because of her. You know this to be true and you belong to the camp that actually encourages that part.

To answer your questions, since it helps understanding how your cult and duties work: you don't have to have hundreds upon hundreds of partners. It is an option you have if you want to, but you don't have to take it. As a reference, the majority of the population in this setting is heterosexual and monogamous. That doesn't mean other options don't exist, but they're in the minority, so there isn't much request for actual orgies except in specific circumstances.

And the rite of fecundity's whole point is for the sex to result in impregnation. If you want to avoid that, use contraceptives, not the rite of fecundity.

>>35095541
That and the Rite of Fecundity. For now.
>>
>>35095594
>And the rite of fecundity's whole point is for the sex to result in impregnation. If you want to avoid that, use contraceptives, not the rite of fecundity.
It's more so I can get a hang on our abilities than anything else.
Will this ritual solve any birthing problems that may have occurred already? Such as infertility and such.

>>35095627
>Will this ritual solve any birthing problems that may have occurred already? Such as infertility and such.
You never tried it, but your in-character educated guess would be "yes"
>>
>>35095594
So, like, no fertility aura or something? I suppose our dick had something to do with Ishtar though. What sort of other crap could we expect from Ishtar?
>>
>>35095658
Actually, your dick is most likely because of your demonic heritage. Or possibly just a random Ether mutation. Who knows? It's certainly not because of Ishtar, whether you have a dick or not is irrelevant to her.

>>35095654
That's a start. Can I ask about what the ritual involves?
Blood, sex, and some sort of pentagram?
Would it make sex between incompatible races possible?

>>35095680
What's ether supposed to be?
>>
>>35095680
So, like, no fertility aura or something? What sort of other crap could we expect from Ishtar as a cultist?
>>
>>35095696
No pentagram. You need to mix the blood with another agent that can make acceptable body paint and then paint specific patterns on the participants' naked bodies. You have plenty of freedom on what kind of patterns actually, so your headcanon can be whatever you need.
Then, of course, there needs to be ritual dancing and sex. Unless you're fertilizing soil, in which case the sex is unnecessary, and so is the dancing.

As for making normally impossible breeding possible, well, that's kind of Ishtar's thing. I mean where do you think most monstergirls came from, originally?

>>35095738
No fertility aura, no.

As for what other crap you can expect, it will all be revealed at the appropriate time.

>What's Ether supposed to be
Short version: mystical energy that allows both great power and odd, if not freakish, mutations.

Long version: maybe when I feel like it I'll do a pastebin.

And now I'm off to bed, thanks for everyone who stuck around!
