“Please, God...” Your would-be murderer lies on the ground in a crumpled heap. He's failed, twice now, to pick himself up; you doubt he'd be begging for his life if he was still capable of moving. You can see through his denim jeans, through the layers of flesh and muscle beneath the skin of his leg like a macabre radiograph—until he hit the ground, you didn't think you let him fall hard enough to fracture his tibia. “I'll let you go, I swear!”

Still, is it bad enough for him to be crying like that? You can smell alcohol on his breath; shouldn't that numb the pain a bit?

You crouch a bit, retrieving his baseball bat from the ground with the sleeve of your oversized jacket pulled over your hand—wouldn't want to leave any fingerprints, after all. You take it into your other hand the same way, finding yourself distracted by the sound of your own whimpering; then, at once, you lay into him, beating him bloody until the wood of the bat gives way over his skull, breathing heavily and choking back screams and tears as the weapon slips from your grip, ruined top half swinging loosely from the handle.

You're sick of having this scene played back to you every other nap since you awakened your Origin. You shake your head, turning over in bed. It's been a good few days since you were stabbed by the lunatic poker star Morgan Mattheson—Caroline's Origin wasn't completely able to heal the damage despite closing the wound, which has left you debilitated—and even longer since you've attended class due to recent events.

You have exams coming up this week, if you're remembering your schedule correctly, but it's not like you have anything to worry about. By invoking Perception, you could memorize weeks of material in mere hours in lieu of actually studying—or, you could invoke Perception in the classroom, manipulating your field of vision to cheat undetectably, aggregating the answers of other students to ensure you get every answer correct.

“Camille! You're awake!” It's your roommate—Maria, you think is her name? Sometimes, you forget you have one, as she's usually absent due to sorority recruitment activities. You turn over again, cocking an eyebrow at her bare back—she's turned away from you, fastening her bra. She's a bit shorter than you, and a lot curvier; you wonder if a different you might be jealous. The very sound of her voice frustrates you sometimes, though... you want to guess she's from southern California, but what's even worse is that it sounds like she's putting it on sometimes. You wince out of habit as she continues. “You've been asleep every time I come by! Do you even go to class?”

“It's been a while. I have tests coming up soon, though, so I'll have to go for those.” You try to sit up, but pain flares in your ribcage and your hand reflexively snaps up to grab your chest. “Ngh...”

“Are you alright?” She looks over her shoulder at you. “God, what do you even do to get so tired?”

“Mm...” You shake your head and groan. You could tell her the truth and she'd most likely laugh it off, or simply misunderstand, as she doesn't seem the smartest type.

“'Mm'?” Maria laughs, rephrasing your dismissive groaning as a question as she buttons her blouse. “There's no way you actually sit around and read all day. I bet you go to all kinds of crazy sexy parties or something while I'm gone.”

“Yeah.” You wave her off. Anything to get her out of your hair. “You got me.”

“I knew it.” She giggles. “Alright, I've got sorority stuff to take care of. Call me up if you're going anywhere fun!”

“Will do!”

Across the room, the door shuts. You probably won't call her, and you really hope her name is Maria.

You are Camille, the Original of Perception.

An Origin is a word that rises from the nature of one's being, awakening in a time of great necessity, entwined deeply with both language and reality, giving rise to incredible power.

Before your awakening, you paid close attention to detail; now, nothing escapes your sight. Your kinesthetic senses, vision, and reflexes are greater than those of any human you know or can imagine. You can project and expand your field of vision, see through opaque matter, and discern the effects of invisible forces, such as the movement of air, heat flux through a liquid, or more relevantly, a concussive blast. You are an adept of motion, capable of accurately predicting the trajectories of up to three projectiles moving simultaneously with different velocities. And you've barely scratched the surface of your power.

Because, as you learned in Psychology last semester, perception is not knowledge. Augmented by knowledge, one's perception creates the understanding of their reality. The world is dangerous, now, and Perception alone might not be enough—if you plan to survive, you've got a lot to learn.

You feel like you could be growing stronger.
What do you desire of your Origin?
>To see in perfect clarity, such that no movement or detail might escape my sight. [Increase Power – Current Power: 1]
>To look through lies and deception, that I might discern the motives of others at a glance. [Increase Intuition – Current Intuition: 0]
>To force my perception onto others, and imbue it on the world itself. [Increase Area of Influence – Current Area of Influence: 0]
>To become one with my Origin, that I may outlast lesser Originals. [Increase Capacity – Current Capacity: 1]

>[Power Increased – Current Power: 2]

An Origin, it seems so far, is like a muscle; it outputs a given amount of power, but is damaged by the exercise, and grows used to it, recovering stronger than before once it is relaxed and rested. Understandably, unpleasant consequences are associated with stretching it too far. You haven't seen anyone push themselves to the limit, though.

You pull yourself to your feet, recounting recent events. After you awakened, you met others. You (and other Originals you've talked to) have a vague mental sense of the locations of other Originals, but the number you visualize in a city-wide area fluctuates daily, and it's once failed to pick up on an Original in the same room, attacking you.

You tracked down the first of several other Originals on your own campus, and met Anders, who thought you were an enemy until you knocked some sense into him. His Origin is Force, and he's used his power thus far to generate concussive shockwaves and hurl objects with augmented momentum. His power is frightening, in some aspects, but he thus far lacks the intuition to make good use of it; still, you've seen him perform very impressive feats of raw force without getting tired or slowing down.

Not much later, you met Caroline at a party; she also tried to attack you, but had been drinking heavily beforehand and seemed a bit emotionally unstable. Her Origin is unknown, but her power allows her to change any aspect of her body—you've seen her grow a bone knife, lengthen her hair, and change her eye color—and treat minor wounds. It's a power that has incredible potential, but she is a weak Original; she believes that it lends verity to the idea that she cares only about her appearance, which she is unsatisfied with, and this mental barrier prevents her from invoking more than a small amount of power at a time without hurting herself.

Michael Chang is Anders's asshole friend, who you hate. He isn't an Original, but he seems to have a lot of connections—you suspect he's a drug dealer, as well—and is highly invested in the development of Origins. He was the one who organized you, Anders, and Caroline to practice your abilities together by function of his childish superhero dream; because of it, all four of you almost got killed. Chang has an in on a secret online community of Originals based downtown, a ways north of campus. He also owes you a favor of any magnitude, which you plan to use at some point.

You've also met a student named Jason, a recently-awakened Original whose face you remembered from late nights spent in the library. He didn't have a lot to say, but seemed a bit distant, a bit obsessed—you recognized the beginnings of megalomania, even in your short conversation with him. The two of you recognize that soon, factions will emerge, and allies will be important; you exchanged contact information, but kept your discussion short. You're not sure what his Origin could be, but would like to meet him again soon.

Then there's Morgan Mattheson—or Morgan Moneymaker, as Chang called him. He's a poker star with a mean streak, and a powerful unknown Origin that seems to manipulate luck and causality. He came at you, Anders, Caroline, and Chang alone in a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, practically shooting up the place to get to you; you'd have gotten out sooner, but he was invisible to your Original-sense. You have no idea what his power was doing, but nothing seemed to go right when you tried to defend yourself; light fixtures fell to intercept thrown objects, convenient wet spots on the floor impeded your movement, and a knife that should have missed you buried itself right between your ribs. You're lucky it didn't catch a lung. The four of you barely escaped, thanks to Anders literally bringing down the house.

And then there's the only thing on the news: the murders in town. They've been going on for a little while, now; a killer, targeting women of all ages, who strikes in random locations and leaves nothing but pulpy human remains, nearly stripped of usable genetic identifiers, leaving no signs of struggle, nor fingerprints or hairs. The fourth case was a few days ago, and they aren't even close to a suspect. An Original, no doubt, but you can't imagine...

You sweep your phone into your hand, noting your text messages. There's one from Anders.

>[Heyo! Been a while since I've heard from you. Are you okay?]
You feel like you should be asking him that—you took a knife, sure, but he got shot and still managed to save your lives.
>[Did you find the other Origin? Btw, Michael keeps telling me about how he's super sorry about what happened. He wants to make it up to you and knows something important about the online group. Text him?]
Make it up to you? He'd better. You'll text him when you feel like it, which could well be never.
>[I'll be on that side of campus today, so let me know if you need anything. <3]
Oh, God no, you are not having any of that. Seriously, does he understand that there are...

Your phone vibrates aggressively before you can even open a reply. It's an e-mail, and you feel a chill in your blood as the subject line crosses your home screen.

>[EMERGENCY ALERT: CAMPUS LOCKDOWN]

This time, though, you've got a bad feeling...

Your phone vibrates again. Michael Chang is calling you. What will you do?

You glance at Chang's contact info for a second, frown, and ignore the call. He'll leave anything important in your voicemail, and you won't have to actually interact with him to listen to it.

Time is of the essence, and you'd rather not head outside in the same nightclothes you've been wearing for more than a day now. You hurriedly stride toward your closet, throwing on a university logo tee-shirt, your cerulean jacket, and a pair of jeans, then take a quick glance out the window. Your room is on the third of four floors on your hall, so you can see things pretty well; over buildings on another street, a cavalcade of campus security vehicles patrols the roads intersecting campus.

In the shadow of one of the buildings adjacent, though, you spy a lone security guard. He's headed vaguely in the direction of your hall, and is carrying a duffel bag, occasionally stopping to look at a small piece of paper.

...And his uniform looks very off-color—your vision focuses, revealing that it completely lacks your university's tag. This doesn't sit right with you. He's headed toward the rear entrance to the building, and you don't have terribly long before he arrives.

You grit your teeth, and make your way toward the door, pausing with one hand on it. You close your eyes, to open your senses. You invoke Perception.

There's a familiar tingling behind your eyes, but you feel as if you can see in even greater clarity than before, and focus on your environment as reality gives way before your vision.

Through the walls and floors of your room, you see your residence hall laid out like a blueprint. Colorless, featureless human outlines move about in the rooms adjacent yours and on the floors below. Then, you search for the sounds, pulling conversational fragments from the air in the lobby down the hall.

“...intruders...shots fired...sorority row...”

Where Caroline lives, and presumably where Maria is headed. There's more than one intruder. You break into the hall and head for the stairs.

What will you do?
>Check Chang's voicemail.
>Call up Anders and see where he is. Something's going on here.

Originals are able to sense the locations of some other Originals, innately. You haven't asked Anders and Caroline to document their experiences with it, but it comes to you like radar, a web of dots in continuous random motion, superimposed on your mental map of the city you live in. Senses flare as you stride into your hallway. Assuming everything is alright, you'll see three others on campus, and a fourth nearby.

There's an Original near the law library; it's probably Anders, as you recall he's a member of the work-study staff there. Thankfully, that's not too far away. A second one, close to the middle of campus and moving quickly in your direction. Caroline, perhaps? There's no third one on campus, but there's a fourth in a familiar location at the nearby campus apartments. You wonder if Jason is alright. You pull out your phone, and dial Caroline's number...

“Oh God, Camille? Hello?” She doesn't leave you waiting for long. In the background, wind. Rapid movement, and the sound of the phone pressed tightly to her face. It sounds like she's crying.

“Caroline, what's going on over there? Are you on sorority row?” You ask, heading into the third floor lobby. “Tell me if you're alright!”

“Campo was... shooting at us... and... oh God, I had to run away, I...” Her voice trails into tearful, unintelligible choking and mumbling. Campo—then, a simultaneous attack from multiple intruders in fake security uniforms. The locations can't be a coincidence, either; are they targeting the Originals? “Camille, please, you have to help me. I'm coming to your hall. I...”

“Caroline, you need to find somewhere safe. Don't run straight through the middle of campus, and don't go near anyone dressed like security... Hold on, alright?” You swivel the bottom half of the phone up to your forehead, and cuss under your breath, inhaling and exhaling deeply.

>Continued

>>35264880

There's four entrances on the lower floor. The front and back lobby entrances are two sets of glass double-doors; the intruder is headed for the rear lobby entrance, and over the stair-rail, you can see that your residence director isn't letting anyone in or out of the building. There's two side staircases, both with ID-locked, external access doors. You could slip past, but both of them lead to the rear courtyard, where you last saw the “officer”.

Caroline is still on the phone, and still moving toward you. She'll be here before long, at this rate, but you don't like any of the ways you can imagine this happening. It dawns on you that you should probably warn Anders, too...

What will you do?
>Stay upstairs.

“Caroline, give me a minute. I need to call Anders.” You bring the phone back up to your face, speaking quietly, pressed against the stair-rail to look to the lobby below. People are gathered below, conversing quietly with the residence director, checking e-mails and news feeds on phones. “I'll call you right back, okay?”

“O-okay... I...” She coughs, breathing heavily, then hangs up before you can do the same.

There's a set of three aggressive knocks on the lobby's back door. The residence director—you forgot his name within a week of living here—stands up and walks out from behind his desk toward the exit. “No one is supposed to be in the landing. I'm going to...”

There's a distant, muffled call of “Security!” that makes him freeze in his tracks. He tilts his head, eyebrow cocked, then begins to turn the other way.

There's the sound of a gunshot, and the shattering of glass. He tumbles backward, and students scatter as he hits the floor.

You slip back into your hallway, making your way down the flights of stairs toward the side entrance, clearing the bottom half of each staircase in a single hurried leap, dialing Anders's number as you run. You take a cautious look out of the door—looks clear—then step outside. All quiet on campus.

Or, at least, it looks that way; the lockdown has done well in keeping people indoors, you suppose. The phone rings, and rings. Then, someone picks up.

“Hello?” Anders asks.

“Anders, holy shit.” You sigh, catching your breath. “Are you alright?”

“Yeah, I'm good? Just here at the library. You got my text, right?” He pauses. “Wait, is something going on?”

“Anders... you know the campus is on lockdown, right?”

“I, uh.” He groans, and the conversation stalls. “Was there an e-mail? I used all my data for this month already.”

“There are multiple armed intruders here, and I think they're after us.” You shake your head, searching for a place to hide nearby. Wouldn't want to be caught in the open. “My residence director just got shot, and Caroline is fleeing sorority row. If I'm right, someone's probably after you as well. We need to think of something, fast.”

“Oh, fuck... What did you have in mind?” He asks.

What will you do?

Honestly not sure of the Geography, but Anders should attempt to find Caroline, considering she doesn't seem to be in very good health.
While we should attempt to deal with the closest of the enemies, preferably seeing if they're in radio contact first.

>>35265532

(( Sorry!

Effectively, Caroline is headed west toward Camille's residence hall from the middle of campus. She's almost there, but where Anders is is a bit further west; I might map this place sometime if it's necessary, but as of now I'm not paying a whole lot of attention to specific directions, just trying to highlight that Camille is about at the midpoint between Caroline and Anders. ))
>>
>>35265617
Alright then....in that case....

We'll deal with the intruder in our building, and move towards Caroline, Anders will have to do by myself.
>>
>>35265677

One building secure is better than none. If you keep running, they'll just follow you until you've got nowhere left to go. A brief invocation of Perception shows that the intruder is on the move. Students flee the building through the front door, and he's on his way upstairs, another pair of victims in his wake. It looks like he's heading up to your floor; you'd track him through the building walls, but you can't risk overusing your Origin in case you have to fight.

What will you do?
>Use the side stairs to beat him back to your room, and ambush from within.
>Follow him up, and catch him outside your hall when he fails to find you.

Back pressed to the wall next to your door, you wait, beads of sweat forming where your forehead meets your hairline, stifling your own heavy breaths. You leave the door unlocked, and watch, waiting for the knob to turn.

There's a distinct creak, and you recognize the most minute of movements. Perception shows you a blurry silhouette—even through the wooden door, or the several inches of concrete surrounding its frame—of a man, duffel bag over his shoulder, handgun in one hand.

He breaches the door, and you move to intercept, stomping on his foot as hard as you can as you reach for the gun. He yelps, whipping the weapon towards you and squeezing the trigger; you barely manage to pull yourself free of the trajectory as it spits fire against your shoulder, grazing you slightly.

You press yourself against him, grabbing the barrel of the gun with one hand and twisting it quickly; there's a sickening crack, the man's finger still in the trigger guard. He stumbles backwards, and the elbow of your other arm meets his face, knocking him to the ground against the opposite wall, leaving the handgun in your hand.

Face bloodied, he panics, reaching for the bag, but stops when you point the gun at him.

Doesn't look like he's got any sort of communicator on him. There's a cell phone in his pocket, as well as what looks like another magazine for the handgun you're holding. He's fired four shots so far; glancing through the plastic of the weapon in your hand, you count thirteen more.

He's unshaven, with short brown hair. Looks to be in his early thirties, smells like cigarette smoke. He's trembling a bit, and you hear it every time a drop of blood from his nose spills onto his uniform shirt.

“Slide the bag over to me, or lose your elbows.” You say—he stalls, but complies when you shake the gun at him, thrusting forward a bit. If he's an Original, you're not picking it up; you're pretty sure he's just a normal guy. He pushes the duffel bag across the floor to rest at your feet, then raises his hands.

“Empty your pockets and get face down on the ground. Move!”

“I got it, I got it!” He shouts, producing a magazine of ammunition, a few dollars' change, and a Samsung phone with a cracked screen. “Fuck's sake, here!”

You kneel, keeping an eye on his movements, and unzip the bag. There's—goddamn—what looks like an assault rifle inside. You size it up with Perception, noting 'AR-15' inscribed into the handle, as well as the fact that the parts don't all seem to match; it looks like it's been taken apart and reassembled.

There's also a spare magazine for the rifle, a crude-looking assembly consisting of an egg timer and a length of capped PVC pipe, a strip of paper with your current address and room number on it, and a pretty large wad of cash; it's a money clip, and you can see the outermost bill, a new $100. You adjust your footing, keeping the gun leveled at your assailant.

We're getting some nice loot from this guy, and he's a hitman so it's alright to steal it. A pistol and rifle, both of which work well with our Origin, what looks to be a crude pipebomb, and plenty of cash.

Tell the man that we're thinking about it. Ask him who he's working for, how many of them there are on campus, if he has any ways of getting in contact with his employers or fellow hitmen, how to use the bomb and what he was planning on doing with it.

We can probably pistol whip him and knock him out somewhat safely with our Perception once we're done questioning him if we don't feel like killing him.

You shuffle around in the bag a bit. Looks like there's some sort of suppressor, but you have no idea what it goes to.

“I'm thinking about it. Who do you work for, and how much are they paying you?” You pause, then grow more commanding. “Talk, now.”

“Look... This guy who called himself the Moneymaker offered me and my boys a hundred grand each to help him bust up this place. Fuckin'... wanted us to round you little shits up so he could deal with you personally. I ain't know shit was gonna go down this way.” He says. He probably doesn't know his boss's real name, but you realize he's working for the Moneymaker: Morgan Mattheson.

“How many of you are there, and how do you contact them?”

The question shuts him up. You invoke your Origin to make sure you have a clear firing line, and check for individuals around the building's lower floors. You catch a silhouette that syncs up with your mental map; it's Caroline, but she probably won't hear if...

You level the gun at your assailant, then put a bullet into the tile floor next to him, sending him scrambling to one side.

“Four! Four of us, including him! They're in that phone, alright?” He yells, panicked.

“Alright... and what were you planning on using a bomb for?” You scowl. The hostile Original is on campus somewhere; he's still somehow evading your senses, but you wager he knows where you, Anders, and Caroline all are. He's waiting, you think, for his men to get you to the same location.

“He told us to be ready with the works—that you weren't to be fucked with.” A look at his face lets you know he's growing more and more impatient. Much more of this, and he'll probably try and do something irrational. Luckily, you've got the gun.

“How do I use it?”

“What... is this some kind of a fucking joke?” At that, his eyes pop a bit. You stay the course, though, weapon trained on him.

What will you do?

Then finish looting, get the suppressor on the appropriate firearm.

“Of course not. Set the timer and it goes boom, correct?” He gives you a dismissing nod, and you assume you're correct. “Where did the Moneymaker tell you to meet back up with him?”

“The empty parking lot across the street, behind where the Dairy Queen used to be. East side. That crazy asshole said he'd be able to deal with the security response all on his own...” The man groans. “I don't know what he was thinking... I swear to fucking God, I'll...”

“Alright. Your cooperation is appreciated. Now, if you'd like to—” He pushes himself to his feet and shouts, attempting to charge you across the hall. Unblinking, you level the gun at his leg and put a round through his shin as you step aside; he screams, and you guide the charge face-first into the concrete wall.

The power of Origins must be difficult to understand. It must have sounded insane to them at the time, a single man volunteering to fight off the entirety of the campus's security force—and the police, provided they show up. Having fought Mattheson before, though, you have no doubt in the outcome.

Your shoulder stings, where the bullet grazed you. Your jacket is torn, the flesh beneath bloodied a bit. The door at the end of the hall opens up, and you manage to stay your trembling hand to avoid pointing a gun at Caroline as she enters, running toward you; she pauses, though, at the sight of your unconscious attacker. “Camille, what are you... oh God, Camille!”

“What? He's not dead. Plus, I got his gun...” You shake your head, collecting the hitman's belongings and tossing the duffel bag over your shoulder. Caroline's face is red, and there are tears in her eyes; her legs are shaking, and it looks like she's on the brink of collapsing. “Are you alright?”

“I'm fine... I'm fine.” She gives a hacking cough. “They killed Jessica and Fern... and I couldn't... oh God, Camille, I...”

You frown, idly fiddling with the suppressor. You manage to get it on, stashing the weaponry in the black bag. “It'll be alright. You did really good, Caroline. We need to get out of here, though. Let's move, and I'll get you up to speed."

You briefly consider stashing the pipe bomb somewhere. On one hand, it'll probably be useful to have something that could hurt Morgan without hitting him directly. On the other hand, you definitely don't want to be carrying an unstable explosive in your backpack against someone who causes misfortune.

>Stash the bomb while you're here?

“Camille, what's going on?” Caroline asks, as you drag her down the stairs by her wrist, pushing through the back door to the sidewalk outside.

“The poker star—the one that attacked us at that restaurant—sent a fucking strike team after you, me, and Anders. He's on campus right now, and he's definitely going to kill us if he finds us.” You say, turning in the direction of Sorority Row. “There's two more of them on campus, in addition to Moneymaker himself. We've got to stop them.”

“Where are they?” She asks.

“The one that attacked you is probably headed this way from Sorority Row. They're disguised, so they probably walk in the open, and I imagine he was carrying a duffel bag?” You ask.

“Yeah.” She nods.

“Alright, we'll take him down before he even realizes we're coming.” You say—then, your phone rings. “Hello?”
>>

Take out the hit men. Anders is a solid dude and can handle himself.

“Camille?” It's Anders, and he sounds a bit frantic. “You were right, man! A guy just went balls-in at the library, guns blazing!”

“Damn, so you made it out?” You ask.

“Nah, we're bunkered down. Chang is here, yo—he came over, right before.” Anders responds. “When the dude opened up, I knocked him on his face, and this asshole here fucking shot him, like, three times! We didn't get to figure out who he was.”

You hear Michael's voice in the background: “Yo, it was self defense!”

“Anders, listen. Moneymaker is on campus. He's coming for us, and I don't think we're gonna get lucky twice. We either need a plan, or we need to get out of dodge.” You say. “Any ideas?”

“Fuck, I had a bad feeling it was him. Oy—fucking! I'm not done talking, you piece of shit!” You hear struggling in the background, then Chang's voice overtakes Anders's.

“Yo, Camille, you there?” Chang asks.

“Yeah, make it quick.”

“Sorry. Look, I was watching the last time you fought him and I had some ideas. You could try and lure him out into the open where nothing bad can happen, but he might be smarter than that.” Chang says.

“What else you got?” You fold your arms, tapping your foot as you continue looking around to make sure the perimeter is safe. The security vehicles roll by on the distant street moving two or three times the speed limit, heading toward the east end of campus. Something's definitely going on down there.

“Okay, your Origins have limits, right? Even if he's not directly affecting shit, he still has to use his power. If we work together, we can outlast him and take him out when he's weak.” Chang says.

“Mm.” You'll consider the ideas, as little as you want to. They're all you have.

Ahead, in the far distance across the courtyard, you see a man with a duffel bag making his way toward your building.

(( Still need a vote on whether or not Camille stashed the pipe bomb. ))

“Caroline, get behind me.” You don't want to stick out running towards the second hitman, as he might recognize the duffel bag. Instead, you direct Caroline to the dumpster nearby, which provides cover, though limited.

He's definitely coming from Sorority Row, and not walking particularly quickly; due to his disguise, dressed identically to the man you just knocked out, there's no way he'd stick out to anyone, at least, anyone that was already in a hurry.

Or anyone who didn't possess the Origin of Perception. You produce the AR-15. Better than any scope or laser sight, you invoke your power to gauge your line of fire.

>33 + 5 [Origin Capacity: 1] = 38

The tingling behind your eyes, for a moment, turns to a burst of cold fire that snakes across the surface of your brain and down your spine. >84 [Bonus from Perception: 0]

But this time, you don't need it. Two shots, the first to the upper chest, and the second to the head. Both find their targets, the man crumbling to the ground.

You stash the weapon, taking another look around. No witnesses in the courtyard, but Caroline is noticeably distressed.

“It's gonna be alright, Caroline. We're doing fine, see? All we have to do is take down Moneymaker.” You say. As you guide Caroline toward the law library, you begin dialing up Anders. You start speaking as you hear him answer. “Anders, are you there?”

“Hello? Yeah, what's going on?” He asks.

“The third hitman is down. If I'm right, Moneymaker is the only one left.” You suggest. “Caroline and I are on our way over there, alright?”

“We'll be waiting for you.”

“Yeah.” You hang up, keeping Caroline close to you as you make your way through the streets. On one hand, you feel as if you should be saving your power; on the other hand, you can't help but use it from time to time, in small amounts, to check your corners, make sure you're not being followed or ambushed.

In the law library courtyard, the corpse of a third hitman lies riddled with gunshot wounds. There's a couple of bullet casings lying at the top of the stairs, and you can see Anders and Michael waiting in the darkness inside, beyond broken glass doors.

“Glad you two are alright.” The stocky Asian kid grins as you enter, and you give him a dismissive wave. “Pays to practice, doesn't it?”

You shake your head. “Go to hell.”

“Sorry, Camille. We're all a little bit on edge.” Anders pushes him aside, moving closer to you. He takes a close look at your shoulder, and his eyes widen in sudden panic. “Shit, did they get you?”

“Calm down, it's a scratch.” You respond. “We need to stay focused. Mattheson apparently wanted to round us up so he could 'deal with us personally'. Now that we're all in the same place, he's going to be moving.”

“So, what's the plan?” Chang asks.

In your possession is:

“He was planning to rendezvous with his hitmen at the vacant lot east of campus, and he's expecting us to be with them.” You fold your arms. “We're gonna be waiting with a surprise.”

“How will we get there if campus is on lockdown?” Caroline asks.

“I'm to believe Mattheson is currently single-handedly holding off, or at least distracting campus security—and if the police have arrived, them too.” You suggest. “I don't think anyone will be available to stop us from just leaving. We could find an open street, or just hop the fence in the parking lot.”

“Alright,” Anders nods, clapping a fist into his hand. “Let's get our feet out of the dust.”

You head northeast across campus, attempting to remain low-profile. A security vehicle is parked nearby the man you shot dead, but it appears unmanned. The four of you move quickly and quietly; past Sorority Row, things are a bit different, though.

There's a burning husk of a security vehicle rammed through the front-most wall of the business office; a cavalcade of cars is spread wide across the street ahead, with some spilling into the adjacent soccer field. They're security vehicles, joined by one or two state patrol cars. Some appear to have crashed into each other, while others are stalled completely normal to the flow of traffic, blocking all passage. A few of the vehicles are riddled with bullets, and a number of men in uniform litter the street.

“God damn...” Chang says. The four of you cross as far away from the scene as possible, hearing a helicopter in the distance. There's an unmanned blockade on the easternmost street; to avoid trouble, the four of you hop the fence anyway, darting across the empty surface road ahead and into the parking lot.

Far down the street to the south, an active police blockade stalls traffic. You imagine the four of you look like a group of students fleeing campus; you might rouse suspicion, but not much.

“Hey, this is Moneymaker's car.” Chang points to a black BMW in the empty lot. “I saw it outside the restaurant. No doubt he'll be here.”

“He did all that?” Caroline asks as you breach the sidewalk into the abandoned lot. “There's... no way...”

You invoke Perception to check the BMW. No more weapons, but there's a few loose bullets in the trunk, as well as—is that a goddamn propane bomb? What were they even planning? The thought dawns on you to plant your own pipe bomb in his car—there's no way either of the explosives are stable, so the pipe bomb's comparatively small explosion, combined with the explosives in the trunk and the vehicle's fuel tank, would turn into something that could set the whole parking lot up in flames.

It'd also turn this small terrorist attack into a large terrorist attack—not to mention the potential repercussions of using Origin powers out in the open.

It dawns on you, too, that you could give the pipe bomb to Chang. As Moneymaker is an Original, he can mentally track you, Caroline, and Anders; if Moneymaker's Origin affects you directly, it would cause the bomb to simply go off in your back pocket as soon as he knew you were there. Chang, though, would be able to wait in hiding, and throw it to the poker star's feet at an opportune moment.

Again, though, there's the whole problem with exploding things and shooting guns—also out in the open.

There's ample cover around the parking lot; a nearby tree lawn and a small magnetic-letter display sign shaped like the Dairy Queen emblem, no longer in use, as well as the entire abandoned building adjacent.

You don't have long.

“Chang, you know what this is?” You produce and hand him the pipe bomb.

He glares at it and nods. “Yeah.”

“When you've got an opening, set it and throw it at him, as long as we're all clear of the immediate area.” You respond. “Don't aim it directly at him. Go for his feet, or the ground next to him, if you can.”

“I got it.” He pauses. “Why me?”

“You're not an Original, which means he can't sense you.” You nod. “If his power affects us directly, it'd just blow up in our hands. Not even an Original can survive that.”

“Understood.” Chang nods.

“We'll wait for him out here. Find a couple of good hiding spots, and a good vantage point.” You suggest, and pass the silenced pistol over to Caroline. “All goes well, I'll be able to pop him off real quick before we realizes where we all are. Caroline, take the handgun, just in case...”

“Camille, you're seriously thinking about fighting him outside?” Caroline asks, hesitantly accepting the weapon. She gives a hurried look around, then tucks it under her blouse. “There's police just a block away, and helicopters... what if someone sees the gunshots, or see us using powers?”

“Yeah... even if we beat Moneybags, we'd be totally screwed.” Anders says.

The conversation stalls, and you usher them toward hiding spots. “Let's move.”

You wait behind the sign—it's a foot or two taller than you, so you unfortunately can't accrue a height advantage—and watch as Anders and Caroline maneuver toward the tree lawn, Chang ducking away behind the building's dumpster.

Minutes pass. You wait, police sirens filling the dead air. Your heart races.

In the street, you see Moneymaker—black button-down, black slacks, black cowboy hat. He walks calmly through the road, a helicopter soaring overhead. There's police sirens from the south, out of sight—then, a pair of squad cars careens down the street, skidding out of control as they pass him.

“You'd think it'd take more than just a little bad luck to send one of them spinning out of control, mm?” He crosses into the parking lot, and you hear him laugh. “Nah. It's just a roll of the dice, every time. Makes you think twice about driving to class in the morning, doesn't it?”

“I think that's goddamn infuriating. I bet it drives you crazy—not knowing how dangerous life really is.” There's the sound of wind, and the helicopter overhead. He remains still, a few feet away from the BMW. “You never know what's gonna cut your time on this world the shortest, right? It could be the drive to work in the morning... the cigarette on break, or the stop at McDonalds on the way home. Or, it could be...”

Across the way, Caroline emerges from behind the tree lawn, weapon leveled. You gauge her aim: dead center.

She squeezes the trigger. There's a click. The slide moves, about halfway—there's no fire. The gun jams.

“...you didn't know just who you were fuckin' with.”

He pulls his revolver like something out of a Western flick—a quick draw, aimed at Caroline. His weapon doesn't jam, and she's not nearly quick enough. There's a crack, a wisp of smoke, and a spray of red as she tumbles backwards.

You've got the shot.

You stumble, firing the rifle at him as you run for cover. It throws his next shot, and he ducks to one side. The gun doesn't jam, but something's wrong—maybe you can't tell your aim as well from here, but you should be hitting.

You follow the bullet through the air as it leaves Mattheson's barrel. You can't afford to waste a movement this time; the minimum possible will have to do. You tilt your head to the side, and there's a whistling sound unlike anything you've ever heard as it whips past your ear, intersecting with the space your brain occupied a moment ago.

He's got three shots left, and he won't get the chance to use any of them. You fire, fully automatic. When you aim at him, you aren't hitting a thing; then, you force yourself to look through, and make the impossible shot. He shouts, a bullet hitting the revolver in his hand, and you see him scramble to avoid dropping it. Another shot—does it meet the mark?—sends him stumbling away, clutching his arm.

Your left leg is bleeding badly, and you're starting to have trouble moving.

“Chang! Do it!” You clear the building wall, and watch the improvised explosive sail through the air toward the poker star. His eyes widen, following it across the parking lot. For a moment, you discern fear. Mattheson leaps free of the BMW, and extends a hand toward the explosive before it hits the ground. It's gripped by some unknown force, and it twists a bit in the air and bounces wildly on contact with the pavement, rolling a few feet to rest under the BMW.

There's a flash of light, and the sound of a muffled explosion. Metal shards scatter out from beneath the BMW; you hear a tire pop, and threads of smoke billow from the vehicle. Useless.

“That was your plan?” The Moneymaker laughs. “I'm afraid it was decided from the beginning. You lost this hand. It's gonna take a lot more than that t—”

You hear a distinct hissing, as the propane bomb in the trunk fissures and explodes.

It's loud, blinding, and hot even at this distance; immediately after the explosion, the sound of distant sirens and helicopter blades overhead is muffled by your damaged hearing. You're buffeted by force, and scraps of metal sail past you. A car door is flung wide, crashing into the face of the Dairy Queen. But mere feet away from the blast, you see the Moneymaker disappear into the fireball.

You limp out from the side of the building to get a clear look at ground zero, Chang moving to meet you.

“Did we get him?” Chang asks, pointing his gun—Mattheson's black revolver, from the last time you faced him—through the smoke, toward the burning husk of a vehicle.

Chance.

The word echoes in your mind. Rolling off his tongue, it surges with power. He approaches slowly, rivulets of blood pouring down his right hand. It clutches his revolver, which looks like it's spent some time in an oven.

“You think I'm a stranger to killin' folks?” He asks. “Back at home, people crossed my boys and I over money all the time. We'd round 'em up, play a little game-a-chance we called 'Aces and Eights'. Make 'em squeal like pigs, and beg us for mercy—while we shuffle the cards and see who lives and who dies.”

“Funny thing about games is, when fortune favors you, you never seem to lose. And with this power, fortune always favors me.” He points the gun at you. “So long as you know you can't win, ready to go one more round?”

Rifle still in hands, you squeeze the trigger. The gun hisses, and clicks. There's a round chambered, but no fire. The gun jams.

“What did I tell you? You just can't...” The Moneymaker chuckles—his chuckling turns to laughter, then, to choking screams, as he drops his weapon. His hands snap up to clutch his head, and you see his eyes twitch, developing a sudden and terrible case of hyphema.

He stumbles, and seizes, then falls backwards, arms locked at his sides, teeth grinding together, blood spilling across his face.

“He's overdrawn his Origin.” Chang says. “It hurts when you try to exceed your capacity, right? The group online seems to agree with that, at least. Push it too far, and you'll end up like that.”

Manipulating luck to emerge unscathed from an explosion of that caliber, then? You're not sure how powerful he was, but a feat like that must have pushed even him over the edge. You invoke Perception—granted, you're no MRI machine, but you can still take a good look at his head.

There's a lesion in the back where he hit the pavement, and a fissure across the front of his cranium from God-knows-what. His brain looks a bit... misshapen, though you're no biologist. Throughout, blood vessels are ruptured, and muscles are torn.

The bullet tore through her flesh where her shoulder meets her neck; it's a shot that should have killed anyone, but her flesh is gradually stitching itself back together. “Doesn't look like he's coming back from this.”

“...You've...” The poker star coughs, surprising you. He rolls to the side, and breathes his last.

At that, your eyes widen, and you feel refreshed despite your wounds. There's a dull pain in your head, a tingling behind your eyes, a feeling of mental expansion similar to your awakening. You tremble a bit, breathing heavily, and note that Anders looks the same—even Caroline appears to have stirred awake.

You feel stronger.

At that, your Original-sense fires; you were aware of some number of dots before, but suddenly, you see a number more in the city, and some beyond.

“...I wasn't the only one who felt that, right?” Anders asks.

“What?” Michael says.

“We'll sort all this out later. We need to move—someone's gonna be looking for us after seeing this.” You gesture to the helicopter overhead; the sound of distant sirens grows louder. “Let's go.”

What will you do?
>Head back for campus together. Get your wound treated, then find a rendezvous point and discuss plans.
>Split up and head back to campus—stay with Caroline, and have her repair your leg.
>Head east past the DQ together. The woods aren't far away, and you doubt you'll be followed if you go now.
>Split up and head east. You'll call each other when you know no one's pursuing.
>Split up and head in random directions.
>Other.

Let's get out of dodge for now, and not get noticed by helicopters, once there Caroline can patch up our leg, and head somewhere other than the campus where we can rest, get food, let things quiet down for a bit.

(( Archived. I'll be using the same tags and same Twitter, and will write a Pastebin at some point or maybe do a recap/Q&A thread. We'll pick up here next time. I like Thursdays, but I'll just tweet in advance when I want to run. ))

>She squeezes the trigger. There's a click. The slide moves, about halfway—there's no fire. The gun jams.
my inner /k/ommando is screaming at me

the slide of a blowback operated pistol does not begin moving until the bullet has left the barrel by a long way, the gas behind the bullet forced the slide to move ONLY AFTER it fires a shot

Cylinder, not chamber, each individual round has its own chamber within the cylinder.

This is just me knowing absolutely nothing about guns.

And this one is me being LITERALLY retarded, which is a problem I seem to have often when writing.

I'm reading the archives right now, and I have to say, besides some of the write-ins, I like what I'm seeing.
