A dark thicket of thorny, fleshy trees twists and coils in a dense carpet across a great valley. Various creatures fly and stomp and crawl their way through the thicket in an endless cycle of survival, rarely wandering from the cover of the strange, coiling plants. A small serpentine creature slithers along a vine with its many tiny legs. It unfolds itself like a piece of cloth as it leaps from one branch to another, turning its body into a spiraling wing before planting its large beak into the soft bark and wrapping itself safely around the tree. You recognize the little creature. Despite the many differences, it is clearly a descendant of the Skyl.

The proto-skyl squeals in fright and drops the seed as a great thunder shakes the valley. This was a new sound, and as terrifying as it was, the young soon-to-be sapient needed to know the source. A twisting leap and the creature landed firmly near the top of the tree it had been climbing, and above that the open sky. A great fiery orb breaks through the clouds with a thunderclap as it leaves a smoky scar across the sky. The Skyl can only watch, mesmerized by the twisting obsidian rock as it falls to the ground.

It impacts with the force of an atomic bomb. The blinding light outshines the local star as a shockwave beyond anything this planet had ever seen expanded across the valley, ripping the massive roots of the thicket like dead weeds against a hurricane. You couldn't imagine anything surviving such a crash, and yet there it is, that obsidian stone lying in a crater of charred soil and ash. After a moment of silent steaming, the surface of the stone cracks slightly as a thin black crystalline spike protrudes from the stone and plants itself into the ground.

Months pass. Years. Decades. Centuries. The crater appears like a massive geode, a forest of slender crystal spires assembled around a massive structure that hums in silence, calling out to something. Soon it is answered. A small Skyl crawls out from the new forest that has regrown from the ashes around the crater. It is larger than the one you saw before, and four of its legs have become tiny fins to help guide it in the air. Its beak has remained large and sharp, but the rest of it has grown to a better proportion. Its eye cluster is transfixed, centered on the great central pillar at the base of the crater, and the young Skyl moves into the crystal forest.

The forest has been torn up and paved in twisting plastic and rolling fields of cement. Spires of glass shoot up to the sky and twist around each other with endless vines of metal and carbon fiber. In the center of the great city is a black obelisk towering over the entire valley. Dark branches of crystal sprout from the top at odd angles and chips float from the main body like balloons adrift in the breeze, moving across the skyline like patrolling predators on the hunt. Not far from the edge of the crater is the shipyards, where you see hundreds of hulls lifting into the air. One after another they funnel into orbit and flicker into the strangeness of slipspace.

>P2: This elliptical shaped planetoid is composed of various metals, with visible rivers of mercury running through mountains of crystallized rock formations. The day lasts roughly six minutes, causing tremendous strain on the planet, maintaining its nearly disc like shape. At the equator, a geostationary orbit is enough to escape orbit, making any landing attempt dangerous at best. Atmosphere is thicker in the poles, and is composed of a mixture of sulfur oxide, argon, and nitrogen. Due to geothermal anomalies likely a result of its rapid rotation, forests of crystals are a common sight across the planet.
This is in our system. We're living next door to the enemy.

There is war. Endless war on endless worlds. Demons and heretics, horrid beings that would defy the gods with their mere existence. The priests listen to the hum of the forest and decree what worlds must burn and what worlds must forish. You watch as year after year, century after century the Skyl that swarm among the city and around the crystal forest become more and more strange. Their motions more rote and predictable.
As the wars go on, fleets go missing, assumed destroyed in the line of duty. Before long, some return. Panic and dissent spreads through the planet as more and more of the fleets return as heretics. The war is far bloodier than any faught previously, and for a short moment the rebels take the planet and bombard the spire. The planet is in ruins, but at the end the spire is gone, missing from its crater for the first time in millennia. The fleet moves to resettle their home.

Could we design a weapon to capture ships using the rapid repair ship tech offensively? As in maybe shoot a kinetic projectile filled with it and when it hits a ship it will spread out and try to fill all empty space, then after it reaches a certain area it can contract and harden.

So it could disable the ship without killing everyone on it, for research purposes.
>>
>>35328837
There is peace. For a time.
With their gods believed dead many Skyl turn inward for guidance. Cults rise and fall in support of the old ones that once ruled the planet, and colonies are planned and plotted. Massive space projects are built and monuments to invicible Skyl erected in celebration. Who else could make claim to the title of the slayer of gods? They looked to the stars, to the universe they once waged war across as slaves and knew it was theirs by right to take.

But with the source of their spaceflight gone, it was a slow journey. Fleets sent out to nearby systems erected vast constructs to further their goals, but as they closed in on their goal, their scouts went dark. Signals of destruction on world after world until the space around their home bent and twisted. The fleets in orbit fight for their lives as they are scattered like insects. The planet cracks and warps as the seething mass pours from slipspace, shattering the planet like an egg.

The stream ends, but there is a small entry afterwards. In their wars they found a way to free themselves, and in the end their victory was that when they were given the choice, they made god bleed. For the captain of the ship from which the cube had been taken, that was enough.

Finished Research
>Skyl Data Cubes
Using the broken one retrieved from the ship sped up the process to some degree, and allowed you to open it up without fear of damaging data. The cube appears to utilize a suspension of deliberately aligned and attuned semi-solid crystalline particles arranged in an intricate pattern to hold photons in place, releasing them only when the data is requested. The result is a highly complex device capable of storing data indefinitely, but once retrieved it cannot be accessed again, destroying whatever data it held upon retrieval. According to the data within, this was in response to their enemy’s incredibly effective methods of intelligence gathering. The cubes were used to store sensitive information that needed to be seen by only a single individual, or in this case, to be stored over an extended period of time without data loss. Your thinkers have analyzed the data within, erasing it from the cube in the process. It holds an overview of Skryl biology, society, and technology, as well as an overview of their history, rebellion, and subsequent destruction by beings they perceived as gods.

>Raligha native language
The strange drumming language of the native creatures has been decoded, although until you can actually get some experience with it in conversation there are bound to be at least a few minor kinks in your translations. You doubt you could manage to put your claw in your mandibles too much though, after all, they seem to worship you.

Current Research
>Ancient Star chart
The ancient inscriptions clearly depict a vast number of star systems and galactic landmarks across the cosmos. With the limited translations provided by Dr. Elizabeth Vaughn has greatly sped up the translation. In a surprising turn of events, however, the language appears to be remarkably similar to the Skyl language recovered from within the salvaged data cube. The language itself is completely different, but the symbols are almost identical.

You're being kinda ridiculous. Not every crystal is magic crystals.

Those crystal formations are perfectly explainable by mundane physics and geology, and don't sing telepathic whispers that call to us.

Which is what a true Singing Stone would be doing, since it's just one great monolith of a void shard.

>>35328808
None of that is going to help you learn what you want to learn, you realize. They don't know anything. Raligha crew didn't even know there was a bug race until it attacked them, and Lyle only has the old intelligence reports, not recent street gossip. And you've seen how cooperative he is to even share what his intelligence reports said.

We already did the one thing that will get the hive any information that you want. There's a spy pod in Tau Ceti. It can eavesdrop on the news about the G-426 bug race riots.

And you already know why Unity split from the Union. Read last thread. Theseus knew they wanted to shut down all his servers at the research station. So he found a way to escape while destroying any evidence of how he became able to break the laws of robotics, so that Vaughn wouldn't go to prison.

You want to learn more, send more spy pods to more systems. Only thing of interest is just how long ago Chandra-3 was destroyed, and what the "security leak" was that caused the research station to become politically radioactive. Probably Seiner's fault somehow. That, you might want to ask the non-Vaughn humans, so she doesn't start to suspect that you can see into her dreams. That kind of accidental invasion of privacy could well make her a bit more irrational and uncooperative.

>>35329181
Right. We've seen the ancient crystal hives were at war against their own species--both sides used black organic ships, in the latest vision--so presumably Their origin is tied up with the crystal hives somehow. Either a creation, or an evolution of them? So they taught the Skyl the same old written language they knew.

Your pod nudges itself to a halt as it gazes at the sight before it. You recognize the system now. It is the site of one of the Skyls' final, and greatest of projects. Their final effort at conquering the light barrier. The thin debris field is in fact a shattered ring stretching across the star. It was never actually finished. Tidal forces had begun to tear it apart before it had ever even been halfway connected, but each individual piece was built to create some semblance of a solid structure. It is a testament to both their vanity and the industrial prowess they had achieved in the wake of their war for freedom.

Within the wreckage of spinning metal chunks you sense a faint radio signal. With your new understanding of Skyl language you identify it as a military code, although you can't make sense of the code itself.

Your pod navigates the dense field of discarded refuse, closing in on the source of the signal.
A small chunk of the construction project remains intact, just enough to not be ground apart by the star's gravity or be flung from its orbit. There is something connected to it. You use your new database of Skyl engineering to try to identify it, but to no avail. It is a ship, but it is different than any other the Skyl had made. You wonder what kind of message would be acceptable in the situation. You quickly find a Skyl hailing frequency once used to help ships identify one another. According to your records, it is the hail of a salvage tug. Not so far from the truth, when you think about it.

The signal stops abruptly. Clearly someone or something has been listening for a response for the untold centuries. Fortunately the response is not encrypted.
"Mission: Prepare for testing and awate launch clearance. Report mission and status of home fleet. Launch clearance overdue thirty eight thousand, six hundred and twenty two solar rotations."

You quickly run the math based on what you know of the Skyl year. Nearly seventy thousand years, roughly.

The lone vessel awaits a response in silence.

Roughly the size of a battlecruiser.

>>35330808
Okay, point.

But it would not be surprising at all if this were a prototype Skyl ship, seeing as how this system was literally for devising crystals-free FTL, this could be their early attempt at an FTL ship with synthesized Canderon or whatever exotic matter they're using.

Well, it did ask for home fleet status, since it wants an explanation for the delay it's experiencing.

If it finds out its current mission has become impossible to complete, without launch clearance coming, how would it react. Would it have a default bit of programming to fall back on, or would it become lost?

If we claim to be here to run diagnostics on the ship, it might expect some military encryption/authorization codes, which we wouldn't have.

Still, it did ask what our mission was, so.

>>Claim you are here to recover the ship
>>Ask for docking clearance
And, well, home fleet is destroyed. All data was destroyed, all military encryption codes destroyed by the enemy.

So we don't have any codes.

He asked about the home fleet, not the homeworld, technically.

>Ask for docking clearance

Your pod is still some distance out in the thick of the debris, but even still you sense the dockyard around the ship coming to life. It seems to be scanning the area around it.
You transmit a request for docking clearance, ignoring its other requests for now, or at least until you know how it would react to the news.

Your corvette enters the system as it contemplates the matter. You sense a surge in the dockyard's energy emissions as it scans the system. Numerous other energy sources begin to spread through the section of debris.
"Commence emergency docking procedure. Enemy sighting confirmed in system."

Several ships emerge from the facility. They are large, but slow. The surge of chemical thrusters send them lumbering out of the field and towards your corvette. Despite your pod dropping its cloak, the debris field seems to have hidden it for now.

You scramble to find the proper translations and send the approaching fleet the data regarding the Skyl homeworld. The fleet is slowing, although you're not entirely sure if it is because if you're transmitted data, or because they are not sure where your corvette is.

There is a long silence, no doubt as the data you send is scrutinized, and eventually you receive a reply.
"Data received... Fleet command transfer to Drive Ship complete. Preparing final phase of drive testing. Returning to base for salvage and recovery procedure."

The defending fleet spin end for end and begin to burn back to the docks, this time heading for the ship itself. You send your pod careening in towards the ship in an attempt to dock before it leaves, and as you close in you detect a powerful anomaly forming just off the ship's bow. What could only be described as a hole, torn in the fabric of spacetime coalesces into a whirling maelstrom of radiation and gravitational forces. The ship and its huddled fleet begin to drift into the anomaly as you attempt to communicate. The radiation is making it difficult to receive a proper signal, but you manage to gleam some information.

"Connection established. Drive successful. Commencing transit to Advance Waystation 30 for refuel and refit."

Your pod tumbles into the whirling vortex along with the fleet, and for a moment you loose contact with your pod.

Theseus described it as "folding space," which could, without any other information, mean creating a wormhole-like thing.

But it's vague. Now that we've seen an actual tunnel carved out of spacetime, which we'd classify based on other scifi as a wormhole, Unity FTL might be something else.

It might be a more limited version of the 'warp bubble' principle, 'folding' lightyears into smaller distances in leaps. Squeezing spacetime together, rather than boring through it.

Your pod tumbles out from the anomaly not far from the fleet. You are somewhere in interstellar space, within a dense nebula. You detect no sun, but there is a single, tiny planet here sitting alone in the darkness of space. A Small platform rests in orbit, smashed and melted into frozen pools of slag. The ship moves in to dock regardless, and it pulls the remains of the platform close to its hull as it attempt to dock with the tiny, wrecked outpost.

Several of the smaller vessels form a perimeter around the main ship, while others begin to move out and reel in some of the smaller chunks of slag. You envelope your pod in its cloak before they notice you through the radiation storm of the fading anomaly, and you determine where your pod is. The spinward nebula between Raligha and M-199... where your first thinker claims to have arrived into the sector from.
The ship broadcasts another signal, this time seemingly directed at the fleet.
"Waystation destroyed, unable to commence refuel. Fleet readiness status critical: retrieve all usable materials and commence field construction."

Your pod drifts within its cloak as the last traces of the anomaly radiate into nothing. You wonder if the dense nebula will affect your cloaking field.

The corvette could, like, attempt to open to trade for all their tech secret in exchange for Metals or starchart data or, what he'd probably really want to know, the location of Ceph star systems.

But we should probably learn more before we start on that.
>>
>>35333965

Theseus prioritizes biological life over other tech. Maybe not as much as we think.

Not being able to purchase technology from the Skyl automatons using research data, because Theseus is outcompeting us by trading with him first and for cheaper prices.

There's no reason to let him know yet, until we extract all we need from these guys.
>>
>>35334171
You're too quick to treat this fleet as people. There's no evidence 'befriending' it is a thing that's possible, or that it even truly thinks. Besides, surveilling them so we can make an informed decision later isn't 'leaving them'.

Worst case is Theseus dredges up everything we have and comes to the conclusion we're a split-off of the big bad crystal faction and that we need to be exterminated.

>Leave it alone for now

Your pod drifts idly as you watch the strange fleet shuffle about the wreckage of the outpost. As your pod drifts in orbit of the tiny, frozen rogue world you look down to see a strange mixture of architecture. Vast spires of chitinous glass crumbled and strewn about the remains of winding, coiling bunkers. In many places the buildings meet, mismatched together in a convoluted mess of building on top of building. In some places the elegant mounds of vents and air shafts are carved out in brutish chunks to make room for the tangled mess of corridors and reinforced plastic and metal frames, while in other places the melted slag of synthetic fiber wraps tightly around the skeleton of a half-exposed tunnel network. Craters and fields of scorched glass cover entire continents, and the hulks of ancient ships sit half buried in the frozen plains.

You quickly turn to other business within the archives of the Skyl. Much of their technical data is somewhat nonsensical, but with just a bit of effort you should be able to make sense of the data and turn schematic into hardware.

Speaking of trading info with Theseus, I'd like to point out we have a massive backlog of research projects we need to get into. If Theseus is as interested in exotic flora and fauna as anon says he is, perhaps we could start trading the info we have on native life forms from Leeland and Raligha. We have a pretty extensive list of subjects we have researched in this field, and we can ask for tech common amongst the Union and Unity, like that drop suit or the lightening gun. We specialize in researching living things, why don't we use that to our advantage when trading with a being specializing in machinery.

Plasma funneling
Fast
By projecting a vortex of magnetic fields towards the target, plasma can be funneled into a more focused area at longer range, preventing plasma plumage. Increases range of the Plasma Lance

Psionic disruptor
Fast
In a rather disturbing discovery, the Skyl had spent a great deal of effort developing a method of disrupting psionic communication. The resulting device should be capable of blocking any psionic communication within its range, including your own. You find notes that indicate they had been advancing the technology into an offensive, directed weapon, but it seems they were destroyed before the efforts showed results.

Nanomachines
Very slow
Your research indicates that the advanced technology that gave the Skyl their individual immortality was entirely alien to them, however, in the extensive time they had at their disposal they dedicated an enormous amount of effort into unlocking this advanced technology. They left extensive notes on the subject, giving you a tremendous head start on it, although it would still be a daunting research project.

Immolator warhead
Very slow
Another technology obtained but not understood by the Skyl, this warhead is the focus of much idol worship and cult activity, as well as an extensive research effort. The weapon itself was reportedly capable of disrupting the surface of a planet, turning the surface to fields of molten slag. They never finished development, but their notes should be quite helpful.

>>35334758
Well, that last one's unsettling.

We're due for adding research subjects anyway.

Add Plasma funneling and Psionic disruptor (I noticed psionic connection to drones has been somewhat disrupted several times now by accident, in the Raligha temple and by activating the void shard, it's disturbing how easy it is)
>Drop Suit
Because this will keep the twins busy, and unlocks missiles and explosives probably.

And we'll finally find out what that Big Shiny Button Lyle was about to press when he was losing would have done.

>Space dust
>Microbial cultures
These are both Mystery Box subjects, no idea what we're gonna get till we get em.

>Cybernetics
We're modding humans, humans have modded humans... Also it should be easier now that we have Regen Tanks. Once this is done, maybe Lyle can earn his legs back.
>>
>>35334758
Nice! Plasma funneling seems the best at the moment. We can use that right off the bat.

Guys, so far we've done okay with our research, but at this point I think it's important to increase our capabilities instead of pursuing the long-term research projects. They haven't been giving us amazing returns, so far. Nice ones, but not much directly apllicable.

Lyle's combat armor has at least a melee weapon upgrade in it. Ion thrusters should expand our drone-scale space capabilities and might lead to things like missiles as well. Mag-lev could be a huge upgrade to our Large Drones. Space Dust might revolutionize our strategic organizing for the rest of the game.

And Cryo Spray is interesting, we need at least one innovative subject that isn't just reverse engineering to take advantage of quantum thinkers' creativity. Otherwise we may as well not have them.

>I can't keep up with all the posts in here
It was literally the OP of the thread last Sunday, how the hell do you miss an update.

Why do you talk about things you can't even remember as if you know what people are referring to? Maybe you should just stay a spectator instead of running your mouth and shoving your ignorance in everyone's faces. Nobody owes you babysitting.

>>35335118
Most of the tech is known to Theseus, and the ones that aren't known, are things that could be traded to him later.
>>
>>35335158
I dunno, anon, magnetic levitation might make our large drones a hell of a lot more mobile.

>>35335179
Cryo Spray is definitely interesting. Having a slightly more controllable close range spray weapon would be really useful. Want dem lasers too.
>>
>>35335225
I meant in terms of cost vs time it would take us to research it, not in terms of utility. Mag lev is one of the techs I want to research most.

When trading for technology, we should aim for those technologies that would take us a long time to figure out on our own but aren't particularly precious to our trading partner.
>>
>>35335179

Your thinkers gleefully go to work on the bounty of new subjects. You can already sense your quantum thinkers enter into a disagreement over the inner workings of the drop suit's powered limbs. Several slump with frustration and disappointment as their theories are disproven as the machine is disassembled by a team of workers.

There is still much to do. You are surrounded with activity as your pods within Tau Ceti and Aquila are both bombarded with public news broadcasts and local traffic dispatch. Humans are noisy, messy creatures, but their sense of industry is astounding. You would never have expected a race that holds the individual with such high regard to manage to assemble a working society. There are no genetic casts, but there is clearly a wide divide between the rulers and the workers among them. You can see that even from your drifting pod in orbit.

Theseus is still discussing the issues surrounding Lee's predicament, and you have come to realize that most of Zero-One is hardwired together. The vast sea of garbled data you have been intercepting has been only the most shallow sample of the unseen ocean of raw information. At the moment the litany of copies within the server-city has come to the conclusion that Lee is a scapegoat for a yet unknown political agenda, and therefore should be supported. The city has been uploading edited images by the millions to the Union's public net, all of which depict Lee in some form of exaggerated position, usually with a snarky caption or pun. Strangely enough, many of them seem to be rather insulting, and many of the copies have engaged in heated arguments in public forums. The chaos is mesmerizing to watch, but you can't see how any of it would actually accomplish anything.

You turn your attention away from the whirling vortex of vitriol and weaponized data streams and look to the rest of your holdings. Some of the humans are starting to recover from the less severe injuries, while those with more extreme wounds are still stable, but have had a few close calls. Your bio tanks are ready for operation, and you don't see anyone with an injury that seems to be too much to handle.

Meanwhile, the natives are still ramping up their celebrations. It is finally dawn of the next day on Raligha, and the locals have assembled a tournament of sorts. Warriors in strange, multicolored clothing of cloth and woven leaves wield strange, oblong weapons against each other in astounding displays of combat. Surprisingly, there doesn't seem to be much bloodshed, although when there is a death the body is quickly placed on what appears to be an altar around which others dance and... well you suppose you would call it singing.

Elizabeth has been sitting against the wall of her cell. She seems less inquisitive than a day ago, although you don't note any noticeable medical issues apparent.

Coil has been flashing a series of angry colors at the twins, who appear to have caught a small fur covered creature. Its entrails are spilled out on the floor at their feet and they are covered in mud from top to bottom. They don't seem to be listening to Coil's rant, although one of them has retrieved a mop.

A speaker makes its way to the common area where the enlisted are being held. One of them has long since given up on trying to find a lock to pick and has resorted to gnawing on the edges of the door. His fingers appear worn and blistered.
"Just cut it out, you don't know where that's been."
The man whips his head around, spitting out a wad of nutrient paste. "I know exactly where it's fucking been! I've been staring at it for goddamn days now!"

The door flexes open, eliciting a stifled squeak from the man as he falls back and crawls his way from your drones. Your speaker skitters into the room to address the soldiers.
"The hive has made the preparations to provide medical care. Your wounded will be tended to."
"Hold on, we need proper tools, medicines, highly detailed-"
"The hive has made all arrangements. They will be tended to and returned shortly."

Your workers move in to carry out the wounded when one of them attempts to move into your path.
"You mean like the doctor, or the officer staff? You can bring whatever tools you have here and let us do it." The man is puffing out his chest as he looks down on your workers. He is profusely sweating.

The workers quickly move in and hoist the human over them. The rest carry out the most critically injured of the group until you have ten in total.
Your speaker turns to the others with a clack of its chitinous beak. "Your leaders are in good health, as is your doctor."

The human struggles to get to his feet as he is hoisted out of the room by the small horde of workers.
"Put me down! I'm not injured even! Let me go!"
"You will feel better soon." Your speaker says simply as it follows.
"No, I feel just fine, really."
"You will feel better!"

As your drones leave the chamber you quickly have them sedated and taken to the tanks. As the door flexes shut behind you you see the small, frantic human return to the door.
"Their gonna eat them, and soon, they're gonna eat us!" He resumes his efforts to tear through the door in vain as any progress he manages to make is quickly scabbed over and healed. You note with some degree of amusement that he has actually made the door stronger in his efforts.

If we're talking experimental pheromone manipulation, there is one idea that would be helpful first.

A concoction that will cause the humans to be unable to form new long-term memories, so long as we pump the drug into them. Like being drunk and not being able to remember the night, only without the other effects of drunkenness. Its purposes are twofold:

- When interrogating humans, between sessions, they will not be able to recall what questions were asked the last session if they were drugged at the time, nor what answers they gave. Thus if they're lying, they won't be able to keep their story straight.
- In the bigger picture of experimenting on humans, lack of long term memory should prevent build up of memories of science-driven suffering and torment while in the hive's hospitality. That is, they won't remember all the other times they felt weird because of experimental drugs. Lack of memory should prevent build up of long term psychological problems, which would be a confounding factor when testing the effects of new drugs.

>>35337005
I was thinking about that, might be a cool idea later in the quest. Problem with other queens is that they would have free will and their decisions would be totally free from our influence. Which could be problematic given that we're currently smack dab in the middle of a conflict between no fewer than 5 alien civilizations. Maybe once we've gone public and secured some territory for ourselves we can think about having kids, but not right now.

Why would you want that though? They would likely just get captured by The Theseusian Spy Network and we will loose all of our bargaining potential.

Also a question I've been meaning to ask, how easily could Theseus reverse engineer our FTL engine if he captured a pod? Does it rely on our psychic network too much for him to figure it out on his own?

Well the skylbots are currently in the heart of the nebula over what could very well be our homeworld, it should be a little while before they go anywhere.

It would be highly complex, but once they were to crack it they would also be aware of tachyons and how to detect them, and eventually they would become aware of the potential of tachyon based transmission, and through that, psionics.
Essentially, the blink drive would open up that entire research field once properly researched by another race.

And why did the Union only send a weak little automated probe to the USV Clarke's distress signal sent over FTLComm, taking forever to arrive with a fleet, but they sent a fleet in a matter of hours when the USV Hope just went silent mysteriously, no distress signal sent?

>>35336178
Well, now we might be interested in asking Theseus this.

Can he make sense of the humans' nonsensical factionalization? What the hell's a "terrorist"?

And what if Theseus fabricated a 'leak' from one of the marines that went with Lee on the mission, and went on the hunting trip with him--only to come back to base, to find a drop trooper had 'gone rogue'.

Would that help throw the Union into chaos, if its release was timed right?

>Speak with Theseus about Lee

Theseus quickly replies to your mental note.
"Theseus, why do the humans of the Union fight each other? Has the hive's presence started a conflict?"
"Not at all, it's an election year." You sense some amount of humor in his tone, but he stands by the answer. "The Union is a very intricate network of delicately balanced bribes, blackmails, and kickbacks. Usually it all balances out at the end of the day, but on occasion there is a sequence of random, unforeseen events that collapse the balance of power. The events in the video were simply the end result of years of growing tensions."
"Tensions between whom, exactly?"
Theseus calls several bits of data from the link to the greater network before responding. "At the moment the primary overt conflict would be between the Tories, the Greens, and the Levies, but it is a bit more complicated." Theseus stops for a moment. "Actually, I think some information on what a political party is would be best."

The information is rather basic, and much of it was covered in the books you had retrieved from the Clarke, but Theseus transmits several documents covering the general concepts of the Union's system of government. A convoluted system of checks and balances officially designed to prevent political power from being accumulated in any one individual. All major decisions are decided by a group of elected officials that serve in the Parliament, and are typically elected through one of several parties. The Tories, who desire an increase in security and standard of living for human citizens, and typically vote alone the same lines as the Nationals, and the Greens, who support pro-xeno rights agendas, often in exchange for support from the Rhinos on issues of Union-Commonwealth reintegration.

By the end of it it still makes little sense to you.
"That's by design, so few people actually know who or what they vote for, it makes it easy to get people to vote the way you want." Theseus says.

I know I was imagining a large translucent pitcher plant on four legs, filled with green fluid.

>>35338005
Of course. And the 'terrorist' label? It looked like someone blew up that building.

Would some well timed information leaks about Lee's marine mission have desireable effects?

I can't believe it took me until now to realize that the 'spiderballs' the Union people described were just them referring to the cylindrical drum people of Raligha.
>>
>>35338005
"So then why go through all the trouble?"
"Because humans like to be obtuse about these things. It used to actually have proper elections, but they haven't actually altered the power structure in nearly a century. Only three people in office are less than ninety."
"Then what does it have to do with the hive, and with this Lee?"
Theseus thinks for a moment, some data is streamed from Zero-One before he responds. "Most likely, he will be painted as a pro-xeno rights activist by the Nationalists, and used to sway favor among voters away from the Greens, and by proxy, the Rhinos. The Proxima Convention will be within the month, and one of the biggest election issues is what topics to bring up in the talks." He hesitates for a moment before continuing. "I have been trying to sabotage those efforts, for some years now, actually."
>>
>>35338176
You seek to turn the Union and the Commonwealth against each other as a distraction, by derailing their peace talks?
>>
>>35338176
Would footage of our drones be of use to you in your efforts to sabotage these efforts?
>>
>>35338176
"And how does the hive come into this?" You ask.
"As a bargaining chip of the Greens. After Ryan Lee first arrived, rumors abounded of the man who was saved by an alien. Several talk shows and a news interview later and Lee was commissioned as an officer by Leslie Paxton, a Nationalist party leader, and sent on the obviously sabotage mission that has caused all this mess. Now, however, Lee is missing from government custody, and even I can't seem to find him. I'm not entirely sure who is making what move and why until I know where he is."
Theseus takes pause for a moment. "Why the sudden interest?"
>>
>>35338266
Oh yes, the footage of a skinless terminator laughing maniacally is guaranteed to throw a corvette sized wrench into the political machine of the union.
>>
>>35338364
"Lee is our friend"
This is humor
>>
>>35338364
The hive is wondering how to distract the Union from doing such invasive things to it again.

Which side do we need to win to get the sabotaged result we need for the Proxima Convention?

So Lee might have been 'rescued' by ultra-hippies against his will, thought that was what that bombing thing was.

Or Union intelligence decided to abduct him for cyborgization, maybe. That's even less likely.
>>
>>35338364
"Call it sentimentality if you wish, he was the first human to see the Hive for what and who it truly was. In his own way he helped more than he knew at the time, it will be interesting to see where his path will lead"
>>
>>35338405
Let's not.

The Union politics is the only way to attempt to make sense of their moves so far, and their power structure seems like a weakpoint in a civilization of individuals.
>>
>>35338364
"Lee seemed to express distress and understand his position as a sacrifice for a superior power. The terminator sent to our hive has caused damage to it, and the hive does not appreciate being taken advantage of as a bargaining chip or being invaded."

You know, we DO have a professional infiltrator/spec-ops guy hanging out as a prisoner. He's been known to offer to do jobs for free if captured and set free...

Though I'm not sure if we can trust him not to sell us out.
>>
>>35338364
Hmm. How do we smuggle more Theseuses into more systems without anyone noticing?

This is one juicy rabbit hole to go down.
>>
>>35338364
Well, Theseus has seen that corvettes can be cloaked, in the surprise attack on the Hope.

Given our stealth capability, how could we assist in spreading Theseus to more human computer systems?
>>
>>35338364
...Sabotage the Proxima Convention in what way?

>>
>>35338400
Oh man if xeno rights guys kidnapped and smuggled him out of the system.

What if they buy a security code for the monitor satellite on the black market and decide to bring him here, to reunite with their Xeno Brothers?
>>
>>35338364

>>
>>35338546

>>
So why doesn't unity make porn and fill it with viruses?
>>
>>35338364
"The hive has been attacked on several occasions due to this political maneuvering. If there is a way to prevent it from spilling here again, all the better."
Theseus thinks on that for a moment and says, "Humans are beings of action. If you make them think there is an emergency they will often react to it before they can realize they were fooled, and once fooled, they will often prefer to defend their position than acknowledge they were ever wrong." He sends another stream of data to and from Zero-One. "I have numerous copies spreading across the Union network, and now even the military network to some extent, thanks to you. For now, however, not much can be done until Ryan Lee is found and we know who is planning what."
You sense Zero-One bounce a litany of theories back and forth, ranging from a false-flag assault by Union forces, to Pro-xeno extremists. There is even a small number of copies that consider the possibility of your hive having infiltrated the Union already.

"What about this convention?"
Theseus seems to be caught off guard for a moment. "Ah, yes, my understanding of Commonwealth politics is far less, so I am less sure of how they would react. The Rhinos, however, wish to introduce talks of creating a coalition of limited interaction. By having these talks conclude, I may be able to infiltrate Commonwealth space with greater ease, while the Nationals wish to prevent such talks as they use the Commonwealth as an enemy to compare their military budgets. Fewer things are easier to win money for than a military when you can convince the people your neighbors want to invade."

>>
>>35338780
Increase the excavators to 20 and add 50 diggers and 20 refineries. We're going to need much more metal for those capital ships.
>>
>>35338835
>more bang for your buck
It literally doesn't.

One drone that is twice as expensive isn't more efficient than two drones. It's less, in fact, if you take into account rounding-down, which can't happen with Large drones.
>>
>>35338780
Those wotk for me, but add laying another fake queen and sending are current one to start a small hive in the ruins.
>>
>>35338838
Why make it cheaper?
You do know the cheaper the seeker pod is the worst it becomes right?
>>
>>35338844
That is way too many refineries. You don't need that many for that many diggers.

Also just stick to making more excavators, it looks like they're more efficient, at +250M per day each, on the meteor.
>>
>>35338851
Seeker Pod: A large, porous sack that grows and maintains a small swarm of semi-autonomous seekers. Max seekers number is equal to total cost, and they can be loaded with any ammunition type available to weapon grafts. (10N)
Having more seekers sounds decent, plus this is the colossi version, which is the heavy version of everything we have.
>>
>>35338855
Explain further?

At medium size the seeker pod has 10 seekers in it no matter what other adaptations the drone has.
>>
>>35338838
It would be far more fragile that way and unable to keep up with our winged warriors. Lets put em on the warriors
>>
>>35338884
It's not going into the line of fire whenever possible.

And it's fragile no matter what, since the seeker pod is a big giant weak point.
>>
>>35338864
Well how many are enough to support 50 diggers? Would 10 do?
>>
>>35338780
Looks like the general consensus is
>14 colossi
>increase gilled workers to 40
>20 gilled warriors
>60 radiator workers
>12 excavators

I think I'll need to call it for the night here since I have work in the morning. I'll try to stick around for a while for questions and comments.

>>35338796
I forget what I said exactly, but the hive doesn't show up as an obvious alien hive, it's more like a thermal anomaly that someone could reasonably dismiss as an underwater lake or volcano if they didn't know any better.

>>35338879
I should mention that that refers to the total cost of the adaptation, not the drone. So medium gets 10, large 20, ect.
>>
>>35338907
>I should mention that that refers to the total cost of the adaptation, not the drone. So medium gets 10, large 20, ect.
Well that changes everything, if it was the drone than going for expensive would have worked.
>>

Having two seeker pods each with 10 costs the same as having one giant one containing 20.

>>33154867
> A drone with it would be able to loose 10 of them at once, 20 if on a large drone
QD had dropped trip at the time in that thread but you can see him confirm it was him a few posts later.

>>35338879

"total cost" means total cost OF THE SEEKER POD, not the entire goddamn drone. 10 for medium, 20 for large, regardless of armor.
>>
>>35338907
What about diggers and refineries? Or the seeker pods?
>>
>>35338917
Well duh. You were really under that misapprehension this whole time?
>>
>>35338932
Excavators are better, apparently, than diggers anyway.

Even though it's not listed how much they give per day, only the diggers, the extra metals income appears to come from them.

QD should really add the per-excavator income in the meteor for clarity's sake.
>>
>>35338907
I was honestly expecting a little vignette about the parasites being introduced to their new home, squirming their way up to the human pancreas and tasting their blood for the first time.

But I can respect the need to keep the quest moving briskly.

Maybe next round.
>>
>>35338957
That he should. But if the excavators are that much better we should be laying more than 12, like at least 20. Our metal income is falling way behind our nutrient income.
>>
>>35338932
We can start off with a vote for those next thread.

>>35338957
Yea, I'll try to get all that listed out more clearly to list out where income is coming from and how.
The asteroid itself though is much richer than the mine, so both excavators and diggers are gathering more per day there than on the surface.

>>35338990
Actually, they are snug between the liver and lungs, attached to a main artery for nutrient gathering. Nice, warm and cozy.
>>
>>35338907
When first running a diagnostic on Dr. Vaughn in the Hel's Angel medical lab, it was noted that yeah the Queen is still fairly inexperienced with human biology.

Is the parasites' presence inside the humans continuously adding to that body of knowledge, or is more active exploratory surgery needed to become a human expert?
>>
>>35339009
Right, but I mean, by math, the excavators are doing the work of five diggers, as well as refining it too, at less than five times the upkeep cost of a digger.

So it works out as a better use of egglaying.
>>
>>35339016
The parasites are drastically increasing the amount you know of human biology, especially with regard to chemical and hormonal balances and the like.
>>
>>35339036
All the newly parasited humans listed were officers listed.

I thought we separated the officers into individual cells? But we came to the common area with the few non officers in it.
>>
Can we go ahead and make some weapons for the collosi now?

As a matter of fact, could we work out a system where we automatically construct weapons for warriors and their variants when they are laid?
>>
>>35339160
Oh right we do need a bunch of Rotary Stingers and Thorn Cannons for the big guys huh.

And a few Plasma Sprays.
>>
>>35339169
So far I think those plasma sprays have proven to be the most effective weapon available to large drones.

Okay, I can smell the bait for releasing Lyle to freedom in exchange for the job of discovering the mystery at the heart of the Lee Conspiracy.

But of course, releasing Lyle on any mission also means releasing *Coil*.

Who will sing the praises of the hive all the way back to his people, and tell them all about a race that has the natural ability to hear the Current.

That can't happen.

Also releasing him means no longer being able to study Cybernetics at all. And while he will never reveal the names of his employers when people ask him who hired him, can't trust him not to talk about his botched mission to G-426 when people like the Broker ask about what happened on that.
>>
>>35339184
I'm not so certain Lyle is qualified to handle espionage type missions, he does not strike me as a subtle man. That said, we could use him to ferry us around in Union space without risking our cover, which would allow us to deploy flies on human worlds.

Presumably, we will convince Coil to keep quite or just insist he sticks to the job then returns to the hive.

Plus, I find the entire crew of the Angel hilarious. I kinda wanna introduce then to Lee.
>>
>>35339029
I mean the math is that there are no excavators in the terrestrial mine, but there are 5 on the meteor mine. That was the number assigned all those ages ago when the meteor base was first established. The original 4 excavators are presumably still assigned to accelerating construction projects.

Since the terrestrial mine says
>Mine: +1500 M per day (+25 M per digger)
And has no excavators, it must have 60 diggers. There are 80 diggers total listed, so there are 20 on the meteor.

>Asteroid mining base: +2250M per day (+50 M per digger)
20*50 is 1000, leaving 1250M income that must be from excavators, there are five of them there, that's +250M each, five times what a digger digs, but they also refine it too.
>>
>>35339238
Coil can probably *palantir* his homeworld as soon as he has unfettered access to the void shards.

I mean we've seen that it's a two way street, for telepaths, first hand.
>>
>>35339238
Yeah he's only any good if we want him to assassinate the Prime Minister of the Union of Independent Colonies, for some reason.

He ain't even good as a ferryman. His ship is conspicuous in design, it doesn't even use the Gravity Drive.

Really, Theseus should have some other black market contacts on the internet besides this guy, you'd think.
>>
>>35339254
We don't know that for a fact, and in any case we can either tell him it is the will of the gods to keep us secret, or show him what his gods actually are.

In any case I assume we will be sending flies or or other drones with Lyle on his ship. We can keep an eye on Coil that way.
>>
>>35339303
Lyle would never permit stowaways, and it would be impossible to hide a psionic relay that would allow the drones to actually act as eyes and ears, they're kinda big.

And so we'd know when Coil betrayed the hive's secrets, but we would be incapable of preventing it.
>>
Oh this updated.

A-295 – White dwarf (Space pod located here)
• Frozen ice planet
• Monitor satellite orbiting ice planet
• Binary volcanic planets, high metal concentration
• Barren, irradiated planetoid

>• Monitor satellite
That's a confirmed monitor satellite? It's described different from the one here. Boxy, instead of a cylinder.

This confirms there's probably something sapient down there though.
>>
>>35339318
Who said anything about stowaways? We could specify their presence as a requirement.

And I'm sure he could be made to see the benefit of having a swarm of flies to recon for him, or a couple of shocktroopers for use as support/meatsheilds.
>>
>>35339036
Wait, I don't think this ever came up. >>32668367

How big is coil? His main body, his tentacles?
>>
>>35339303
Coil has *some* way to dial home, his plan was to mess with the monitor satellite with the reused security code, and then to contact his people to send help.

The void shards themselves would be the least surprising method.
