Current geological era: life before land
Year: -246,000,000
Average chance of rainfall: 82% and slowly decreasing

Currently about 4 to 7 percent of the world's geography is land biomes, with the remainder being water biomes. Most of the land is either rock desert, mud wallow, beach, sand bar, atoll, or volcanic mud island. Ocean biomes that exist are; deep trench, open ocean, deep ocean, sea-bed, sea cliff, lava trench, shallows, coral reef, and very shallows.

Some already existing players are expected (and hoped) to return, but as time has advanced, a few new player run species are around, and a new player could choose to enter as one of them.

new species
>sea slug
>sea snail
>tri-chordate
>loop fin fish
>Primordial boney fish

Though its not guaranteed, later when more land is around, a few more species will appear as well.

If you're a new player, here is a sheet model for you.

>Species name
>Population: 10
>Number of dedicated hunters: 3
>Native biome: (selected by player)
>Evolutionary traits: (leave blank, I'll disclose what they are for each species)

I'm ready when everyone is ready, but am waiting a short time to let everyone who's already in this get here.

Already existing players: You may enter at any time, even if you're only just getting here much later.

>Size: 8 feet, more inches across
>Evolutions:
[Expanding/contracting stomach] - the ancestral organ of many things.
[Tube] body becomes more tubular and has more reinforcement now. Its sturdier. It can support its own weight.
[Tuning Organ], a very early form of echolocation that makes a shrill sound. More accurate. Decorative ridge with pointy bits.
[Sonar Burst] Stunning blasts
[Tracer Ridges] it makes you slightly faster. Its also decorative and makes you look a bit like a piece of seaweed.
[Expansive Jaws] Large muscle for great force, gripping, very big, able to open to three times the size of your head.
[Rigid Fins] Speed and minimul land capability
[Promordial Brain] +2 to all rolls
[Mudfish] Allows period of land wiggling
[Primordial limbs]
[Cluster-egg laying] At least 6 offspring per turn for min. 3 turns after reproduction
[3-Second Permanent Memories]
>Behavior:
[Lairing] Seek existing lairs
[Ambushing]
[Moderate Hunting] Double food.

Rolling your population. Increase your population to match the total.

Your evolutionary traits are;

Hermaphroditic Bimorphism - your species is both male and female, reproduction attempts produce twice as many offspring as usual. (though this initial roll is not multiplied)

Breathing skin - You breath through your skin automatically in an ongoing background process, able to breath both air and water.

Evolving spends points, you need biomes and population to gain the points, gaining points automatically from both biomes and population.
>>
Rolled 5 (1d6)

>>35353239
1. You gained primordial lung. You are able to breath air and hold your breath for about 7 seconds.

2. Increase population by 50. Increase population by diceroll total for three turns afterward. CORRECTION: Your pop increases by UP TO 6 for three turns, not 6 min, after each reproduction action.

3. 94 became hunters, of these, 82 came back from their first foray, increase hunters by 82.

Impossibly hard mode. Could do some sort of primordial amoeba style ooze though. That would also be very difficult though.

The portion of the world's evolutionary path when amoebas and microbes were the main life forms has already happened, and happened before the first thread started.

Geological Milestone: Birth of Nitrogenoflorans.

Nitrogenoflorans are a simple, weedy plant with a pulpy body and numerous tiny leaves each about the size of a human fingernail.

Like Oxygenoflorans, they breath out a vital chemical into the eco-system. (oxygenoflorans breath out o2). UNLIKE oxygenoflorans, Nitrogenoflorans breath out nitrogen, and grow on land only, whereas Oxygenoflorans only grow in water.

I think this maybe like a post behind cause I got a new phone and can't access the internet history on the old one. :(
I did have a brain however, and I had a pop boom along with 200+ pop because of spawning grounds (open ocean) that much I remember.

This is best as I can remember, I'm not trying to cheat or anything. It's just that it's hard trying to remember everything. Now for Rolling

1 Try to develop jaw further.
2. Improve my skin for protection and faster movement through water.
3. Spread out to find more biomes.

1. This time, you gain thorny points which flex, allowing you to move yourself around in tunnels even if your limbs can't move about. Underground specialized navigation: Movement thorns.

Note: volume of vibrations of tuning organ automatically increases with size. You only need to increase size to increase volume.

2. Your population increased by 42. You need more biomes and more hunters.

3. Birth defect: offspring are born with malformed brains. Psychotic members of your species kill 26 population and are killed in turn, lose 26+12 population.
>>
>>35357766
Reminder: You had jaws already and are now a "jawed fish", not a jawless fish. However you can still develop the jaw further.

1. Your beak precursor got rough turns and sharp turns, giving the beak precursor numerous painful points and bends. You gained: Beak Precursor: Improved.

2. You gained the social behavior "waving". Waving allows a tri-chordate to flip itself into the air/water in a display. It is a mating behavior. Attempts to reproduce gain a +2 bonus from here on. Its called "waving" because a tri-chordate (which looks very similar to a starfish but only has three big limbs), usually raises one of its limbs to do this.

3. Disaster!
>Distant earthquake

Very shallows became Rock desert suddenly, leaving 18 members stranded above water. Of these, 12 made it back to water. Lose 18 minus 12 population.

Rock desert is a "dead" terrain, it doesn't grant evolution points and doesn't house life. It will become something else on the next turn, and you may keep it or discard it as you wish.

Size: 1.2 feet
Native Biome: Coral Reef, Shallows, Coastal Shore, Rocky Shoal, Shallow Lagoon, Plains
Behaviors:
-Waving: Mating display, reproduction gains a +2
-Surprise Attack: Attacks without warning.
Evolutionary Traits:
- Feeler Hair: First thing to have hair. Sensitive to currents, heat, cold, and provides insulation. Also acts as a rudimentary feeler system (Touch: Feelers)
-Hair Knots: Hair is long enough to knot into very basic weaponry, grease getting stuck in the knots. Smells awful though.
-Breathing Hair: No respiration, but hollow hairs allow for the passage of CO2/O2, allowing air breathing
-Boney Limbs: Actual hardened bones.
-Sensing Grrease: Excretes a grease that acts as a basic ear membrane and a sense of taste. The grease has a numbing effect on contact.
-Primordial Brain: +1 on all rolls
-Simple Eye: Centered on the body, can look all around, but the body needs to move to help it

Action 1: Attempt to evolve the brain again
Action 2: Attempt to evolve lungs, or some form of inhale/exhale

What specifically do you wish to evolve?

You may evolve: SKIN, JAWS, TEETH, ORGAN, FINS, SENSORY, or BEHAVIOR. If you're not sure what you want to specifically change, but just generally want something better in an area, you can give just the general type (the all caps words, which do not need to be all caps when you use them), you wish to improve.

1. 69 hunters went out. Of the 69, 51 returned from their first foray. Increase hunters by 51.

3. Increase population by 54.

This is still considered your previous action, so no, you don't need a new roll. When you select 3 entirely new actions though on your -next- turn, you do need to roll dice.

Number of Dedicated Hunters: 85
Size: 6.3 feet
Lifespan: +2.7 years
Native Biome: Coral Reef, Shallows, Coastal Shore, Rocky Shoal, Shallow Lagoon, Plains, Muddy Coast, Humongous Fungus Forest, Sandy Coast
Behaviors:
-Waving: Mating display, reproduction gains a +2
-Community: Intraspecies sharing of territory and food.
-Surprise Attack: Attacks without warning.
-Fighting: Even more aggressive tendencies.
-Breathing Hair 2.0: Hollow hairs allow for the passage of CO2/O2, allowing air breathing. Can use currents of air/water to inhale/exhale
-Boney Flakes: Large flakes of bone matter are scattered through the body, making it hard to swallow a trichordate.
-Sensing Grease: Excretes a grease that acts as a basic ear membrane and a sense of taste. The grease has a numbing effect on contact.

-Simple Nervous System: +3 on all rolls
-Decentralized Instinctual Brain: Mutation! Little bits of brain are scattered through the central mass.
-Simple Eye: Centered on the body, can look all around, but the body needs to move to help it

Current Modifiers:
+7 to hunt attempts
+2 to all rolls
Rape imminent in 1 turns [+1d6 to population]

Recent Additions:
1. You gained 2 feet in size.
2. You gained reclusivity. You avoid, instinctually and automatically, things that are bigger than you.
3. You gain simple optic nerves. Your brain now processes information as ordered sense impressions, at least for sight anyway, which allows you to "hone in" and look at one specific thing of your choice like you're "zooming in" on it on a TV. +5 to hunting.

Final response to Mr Shark for tonight.

1. Gigantism mutation corrected, Gigantism becomes the norm instead of the mutation. Gain 8 feet of size.

2. Hunters developed a behavior, Feast Frenzy. A hunter in feast frenzy will relentlessly attack ANYthing, but only gets into a feast frenzy after it has launched the first attack. You gained Feast Frenzy: Hunters never retreat.

3. You found a salty river.
>>
>>35361060
Final response to Eels for the night.

1. You gained True Claw. You now have a claw with digits that can move about. Note that you may specialize claw to digging, fighting, climbing, grasping, or other such things. (note that it can grasp now, but specializing it to grasp would make it grasp better).

2. You develop a Proto-bone spine with spikes at each joint. Each spike is six inches long. Each joint of the spine has 3 spikes. You need a distinct action to get ribs. But you can get ribs, and with spine it'll cost less.

3. You found a fungus marsh, a swamp with gigantic mushrooms in it.
>>
>>35361084
Final response to tri-chordate for the night.

1. You gain ridges along your three limbs that allow you to pull your own body weight. You can now climb.

2. You gain sense of smell, the brain able to analyze air or water pulled in through the breathing hair 2.0.

3. You lost simple nervous system and decentralized instinctual brain to gain Web-brain. All the scattered bits are now connected together into one big mass. You gained a 5 second permanent memory and a +4 on all rolls.

Final response to Shirai for tonight.

1. 61 became hunters. Of these, 49 came back from their first foray.

2-3: 49 Hunters ate each other. Of the 49 that came back, 18 survived. These 18 are elite hunters, place them in a new field of the sheet, "Number of elite hunters". Each 1 elite hunter produces 3 food units.

Thats fine, except primordial insect is a land-biome creature.

Around 13% of the world's biomes are now land, and slowly increasing.

your evolutionary traits are as follows.

Dense shell - You take less environmental damage from heat, cold, and radioactivity

Mandibles - You have beetle like specialized jaws that allow you to wrestle your food to the ground, shredding it instead of chewing it thereafter.

Currently existing land biomes are as follows; Lichen Plains, Fungus Forest, Fungus Swamp, Bog, Deep Bog, and Fungus Jungle.

1. Try to make it less pointy and attackable.

3. Keep working on that grey matter to improve memory structures, perhaps this may even lead to a long term memory.

1. increase in size
2. Develop 'herding' hunting techniques: hunters frighten smaller prey towards nesting areas

1. You gained primordial veins. They only travel from your organs to other organs, they don't travel throughout your whole body. Metabolism speed increased, lifespan increased 1.1 years.

2. You gained proto-bone ribs. They increase your ability to sustain damage, but they aren't terribly strong or hard. They are however capable of supporting your body's weight, so you can lie on your stomach for example without harming yourself unintentionally.

3. Population increased by 89 plus any applicable bonuses if any.
>>
>>35371556
1. Failure of no evolutionary result.

2. Evolutionary milestone: Primordial Venom. The venom is less "poison" and more like a combination of germs and acid. It makes those it poisons very sick and eats away tissues near where they were hit. It isn't completely fatal, it is very painful and debilitating, though.

3. Failure of no evolutionary result.
>>
>>35371591
>>35371618
1. You gained 1.3 ft in size. You are now 1 ft + 1.3 ft total in size.

2. Impossible, you do not have nesting as a behavior. You do however gain swarming, in which all hunters attack the same target if the target is to big and strong.

3. Failure of no evolutionary result.

Dedicated hunters are members of your species who's entire purpose of existence is to find food. And no, they don't increase percentage wise, you spend an action to increase them, the number you rolled for that action becoming the number of hunters that go out, the number that returned from the first foray being the number your hunters increase by. In other words, lets say you rolled 30 on a "increase number of hunters" action. I would then say, "30 became hunters, of these 30, 22 returned from their first foray, increase hunters by 22".

1. You gained 77 population.

2. You need "sentient brain" for tool usage. Since there is absolutely no chance at all of success here, this result is moved to action 3.

3. Micro-nerves appear throughout the feeler hair, the hairs now having the slime congeal around them, allowing them to be much more sensitive to touch and heat, and allowing them to be more resistant to cold. The grease is now more a goop, though it does exactly the same thing. You gained "Micro-Nerve Hair", which is "feeler hair" tier 2.

-Community: Intraspecies sharing of territory and food.
-Surprise Attack: Attacks without warning.
-Fighting: Even more aggressive tendencies.
Evolutionary Traits:
-Micro Nerve Hair: First thing to have hair. Sensitive to currents, heat, cold, and provides insulation. Also acts as a rudimentary feeler system (Touch: Feelers)
-Hair Knots: Hair is long enough to knot into very basic weaponry, goop getting stuck in the knots. Smells awful though.
-Breathing Hair 2.0: Hollow hairs allow for the passage of CO2/O2, allowing air breathing. Can use currents of air/water to inhale/exhale. Also can determine smells.
-Boney Flakes: Large flakes of bone matter are scattered through the body, making it hard to swallow a trichordate.
-Sensing Goop: Excretes a goop that congeals around the hairs and acts as a basic ear membrane and a sense of taste. The grease has a numbing effect on contact.
-Web Brain: Bits of brain are now connected and scattered through central mass. 5 second permanent memory, +5 on everything.

Secondary Fins: mudfish type. These fins don't just let you swim around, they let you flop around on land a bit more effectively.
Bites: gore-imbued. This means rotting bits and pieces of previous meals stick to your teeth, which sweat out a fluid glue. As a result, being bitten by you even once, is usually severely harmful, though not truly poisonous.
Blow-Hole. You can breathe a small amount of air in by surfacing. You are still very much a fish, but you can breathe a small amount of air instead of water if you have to.
All your senses got 40% better.
Tertiary Fins, a type of fin thats up near your head and lets you flip about in water. You can now water-leap similar to a dolphin, though you aren't as acrobatic or pretty.

Transition event: The big dry-out.

All seas begin to slowly recede, losing 1 Biome every 4 turns. Enough land has formed that large islands are now frequent. About 26% of the globe has land on it, and the number of land biomes is increasing.

Ecological history milestone: Birth of non-fungus plants. Primordial Forest, Primordial Swamp, Primordial Jungle, Primordial Rain Forest, and Primordial Savannah biomes have appeared, and will slowly spread throughout the world.

Waiting for further posts before responding, assuming other players are still playing.

In addition, enough life has come about on the planet that a new dynamic is going to be in play very soon called "apex predator". Apex predators are exclusively either land or water (and do not evolve any further, so never change), but they are extreeeeeeeemly dangerous, and regularly prey on any and all player-run species that they can prey upon.

Killing an apex predator has many benefits, but it isn't something to undergo lightly.

Your martian ground changed to Primordial Bush-land.

1. Your bones gained a hardened inside, they're now soft-shell bones like a more evolutionarily recent bone, with a somewhat hard outside and a gooey inside.

2. You gained a weak logic center in one of your brains. It's dumber than the dumbest calculator, but it can make 1/0 yes/no type decisions to some degree.

3. 47 became hunters, of these, 39 returned from their first foray, increase hunters by 30.
>>
>>35375433
1. Venom is now actually poisonous, and not simply heavily debilitating.

2. You got the surface application, but it didn't do the whole "nest" thing. Instead, when a scorpion lobster is dying, it over-produces the acid, dissolving itself into a big gooey puddle of it.

3. You gained flexing muscles in your claw-limbs. They can rotate in a small circle now and orient on things without having the whole body have to turn and move.

Final turn for this segment approaching.

Time to introduce the apex predator. This apex predator persists throughout all future threads until I declare it extinct or it is wiped out by player actions or a catastrophic event.

The apex predator of this time period is the CARNIFERN. Up to 80 feet tall, the Carnifern is a gigantic florafaunic plant. It is mobile, eats meat and blood, and is made of pulpy, dense material that resembles heavily mold-ridden kale combined with heavily withered flower material. Carniferns hunt through all land biomes, but don't reproduce often and take a loooong time (several turns) to grow to adulthood.

>>35377957
This was the final turn, however, since you rolled a 98, I won't be a jerk-ass and make you discard it.

1. 98 became hunters. Of these, 91 returned from their first foray. Increase hunters by 91.

2-3: You lack sufficient parts to use language, you need vocal cords and other things, but your general intelligence level is roughly that of a 4 year old human child. So not a total dumbass, but not super genius smart.
>>
>>35378032
Ah, good to know. Though I have to ask if a non-verbal language is possible, using the flashy eye things.

Captcha: dgected That
>>
>>35378084
It is possible, though its not cheap or easy to get.

See heres the thing; the way the current game is set up, you're not "supposed" to be able to gain full blown sentience till chapter 7, "The Ascent of Intelligent Beings". Further, achieving full blown sentience and a surviving functional stone age civ is the "win condition" to the whole game.

So under the current system setup, if I let you gain full blown sentience like you obviously want, the game is over, you won.

Perhaps I need to rethink this.

Thoughts? From you and from the other players in general.
>>
>>35377556
fuck, I skipped you without even realizing I skipped you. This is not a continuation of the game, just me doing this one turn.

1. Success, all out attack can now use up to 36.

2. You're a tad bit to big for jumping, you need a bigger tail for that, though you did gain more muscle mass.

3. You gained acid-extruding feet-soles, this allowing you to slowly climb some forms of terrain.
>>
>>35378148
And we're in Chapter 1-2, yes? I can see how I may have thrown a spanner in the works there. I'd been going for a setup similar to humans, with relatively little physical ability (there are sharks more than twice my size) but a much greater intellect.

Perhaps heighten the win condition to something farther off? Say, a modern day or futuristic civilization, maybe even a 'Last Man Standing'. Or maybe have more inter-species conflict. Might be a little hard since most player species took different biomes to live in, but it could happen as we move onto land.

Another option would be to have the end condition be Stability: nothing really happens, or has the ability to happen. Again, something like last man standing, though it could involve things like domesticating other species instead of extinction.
>>
>>35378084
not part of this quest but, if I may you might want to add more threats other than one pan-biome apex predator to make players focus on more on survival and ability evolution rather than a straight out sapience rush. Hard to reach true intelligence if you cant fight of your predators. Also larger populations should have fragmentation due to regional differences and cause conflict due to that, making it not only a fight to evolve but a fight if you spread out too fast and having your species fragment.
>>
>>35378296
We're just now getting to chapter 1's ending, the next chapter will be chapter 2, "Life on early land". A full transition to chapter 2 will happen probably sometime in the next thread.

I'm thinking of something either like 1 civ must gain total dominance over the planet, or all the civs must either become exodus tier (star wars, star trek, etc), or destroy all other civs.

But this is a long way off, you still need literally millions (and millions) of points to buy sentient brain.

>>35378457
This particular eras apex predator is more like a disaster than a monster-battle. It'd be like trying to fight an earthquake, really all you can do is run. Later eras have different apex predators, and some eras have more than 1.

I like the regional differences idea. Are you suggesting something like automatic slow formation of sub-species that compete against the main form of each player-run species?
>>
>>35378457
Yes, basically unless a species has something to hold it strongly together over a very long period of time it would fragment and compete, or become totally different and therefore useless to the pc. things like strong family and mating groups would slow it done and language should stop it completely, but until then the more wide spread a race is over the biosphere, the more likely it will fragment and differentiate. Additionally you can either give larger points costs to advance more or give out bigger missteps on a botch. Thirdly any species not going for non apex-predator in a normal non walking hurricane sense should have predation issues of some sort, even humans get nommed on to this day and age by beasts in the wilds after all. Any regular apex predator would then have hunts issues because they have to eat a lot and require more than baseline food. Just some ideas

>>35378505
see above still not used to this, im new
>>
>>35378659
The final evolutions almost all cost millions/billions/trillions of points.

To help you understand what you're looking at in this game, each turn is 5,300 years of time, biomes give evolutionary points determined by their biomass, and population and hunters automatically generate a small amount of evolutionary points per individual (1) unit. Things like surviving disasters and beating apex predators gives evolutionary points as well.

ok I see, still they should probably be npc races that compete/ predate on other species, causes the players to think, throws curve balls in the sim like that fission meteor, the races could range from an actual threat to minor annoyances and could in time wax or wane according to you whim or dice rolls, after all fragmentation could account for some later beast that's a major pain in the but but nowhere near as dangerous as the carnifern. Historically humans, apes, dolphins and other species that are considered "smart" have had trouble not getting eaten out of or predated out of certain areas other species could easily push out of areas that a race would have a loose hold on after all. Just an idea.
>>
>>35378915
The final turn already happened, I just did a last-minute response because I saw that I missed someone. I expect to be running the next thread sometime tomorrow, probably in late afternoon or early night, which would mean somewhere between 5:30 PM and 9:30 PM. Thats not a guarantee, just what I plan to do.

>>35378916
There are NPC races, just a lot of what goes on is automatic and in the background. If I had to write out everything I'd quickly become mentally exhausted and unable to continue.
>>
>>35379135
These times are EST.
>>
>>35379135
ah ok I didn't know then yeah only thing I can really see that would change up would be having the species that are really spread out in the biome department have small chunks of their population start going in divergent paaths to more easily adapt to those fringe areas, sometimes giving rise to a new species, or cause strife before they are re-absorbed back in.
>>
>>35379135
quick question:
Am I the apex predator or is there something nomming on me? Also is there any chance I can keep the smaller version of my species within line, as in not to fragment?
>>
>>35379252
Apex predator is Carnifern, a land creature. And yes, things do nom on you if they hunt you.
>>
>>35379211
I could probably make that work. Theres already an isolation factor that slows evolution if you aren't widespread enough or your native biomes are all remote areas.
>>
>>35379277
Glad I could help, hope it works out
>>
>>35379264
Ooh nice, something to bring down. Is there anyway I can upgrade my ESP into psychic powers? or is that a no go. Cause with chin tentacles, we illithids now.
>>
>>35379417
>aquatic illithids
Oh god the power gamer in me just freaked out, poor unsuspecting fishes.......
>>
>>35379417
Yeah, but you can't until much later. I sort of pulled the ESP result out of my ass, I didn't really know exactly how it was going to work and I need to write up some rules for it and such.

>>35379453
It can happen here. Join us next time.
>>
>>35379453
6 feet terrestrial and 14.3 feet in the water, giant carnivorous sharks with Dunkleosteus beaks (look it up)

And psychic with all five senses.
I guess everything is coming up millhouse
>>
>>35379470
i'll try provided nothing comes up, work seems to constantly thread block me. Anyways glad some of my ideas might be of use. Night all
>>
>>35379529
This is the part in which the camera pulls back rapidly to reveal that this entire world, this entire UNIVERSE, is contained inside a drop of sweat on millhouse's forehead, then it keeps pulling back to reveal that THAT universe is contained in a piece of shit hanging off my ass hair.

Because fuck the simpsons.
>>
>>35379594
lol
>>
>>35379712
I'm sorry miss Sharkesian, I am fo reeeeal...
