Dear Andreas,

How are you doing back home in Marconetti? I hope you're doing fine.

I was supposed to be staying in the castle but Uncle Gregory said that we could stay at his house instead so that's where me and Luciana are right now. Emilio didn't come though since he's boring like that. But even without him here, it's still really fun! Uncle Vincent's daughters come over all the time to play with me and Inaba, and Reinhold's been over too. He got Marianne a cake today, and it was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo yummy! I wanted to save you a piece and see if Aunt Ariane could use magic to keep it fresh until you can eat it, but Uncle Gregory said that it wouldn't work so I didn't.

I also had my first duel yesterday, Uncle Gregory was the ref and Reinhold was there to watch. I tried really really hard and Reinhold even said that I had good moves, but I lost. Guillaume hit me with his practice sword and it really really hurt and I cried a lot but I'm not going to give up. When I get back home, I'm gonna go visit Reinhold's grandma and she's going to teach me how to be awesome like her and then I'll make Guillaume cry the next time we fight.

"Oh God, now she's signing her letters with it," I mumble under my breath as I give Elena's letter a second lookover. I never thought that I'd actually miss this weird feeling of embarrassment and frustration over the bizarre things that she does, but I'm definitely feeling nostalgic for those days now...

...even though it's only been a few days.

I guess she's really grown on me, huh.

"Er, Sir Andreas?" the messenger who handed me the letter looks at me with a puzzled expression. "Did you need anything from me? I have a letter to deliver to Sir Monique as well, and-"
"Oh, sorry!" I stammer. "Thanks for delivering the letter, and I'm sorry for holding you up."

Dammit, I just made the guy stand there while I read Elena's letter...

"It was nothing," the servant says, bowing to me before hurrying off to deliver his next letter.

...heh. I don't think I'm ever going to get used to hearing the word "sir" in front of what's obviously a girl's name.

Wait, why does Masaharu have dartboards on his dude-kimono?

I'm kind of curious as to who sent Monique a letter, but... I honestly don't really like the guy all that much. Call me petty or whatever, but that duel really soured my opinion of him.

And so, I ignore my curiosity for a change and head down the hallway in the opposite direction from where the messenger's going. I think I saw Prince Alberto somewhere around this part of the castle, and I figure that I should probably say hi to him before we get to whatever bout of unpleasant business that we're going to be stuck with.

"Hey, you got a minute?" I call out to a maid who's walking by.
"Eh!?" startled, she freezes in place. "Erm, Sir Andreas? How can I help you?"
"I was just wondering if you've seen the Prince around today," I reply.
"Oh," she breathes a sigh of relief. "I think I saw him go down to the dungeon maybe an hour ago?"

Just the place that I -didn't- want to go.

After thanking the maid for her time (and apologizing for startling her), I head for the part of the castle that's been nicknamed the "stairway to hell," the sole entrance and exit to the dungeon. It's gotten a lot more activity than usual lately, what with the traitorous guards and the escape attempt the other day and all that...

...it was a really weird feeling to see a bunch of guys that I actually know from the Guard all locked up in there for treason. It's just the kind of thing that makes you question just who it is that you can trust.

But that's enough lamenting the sorry state of things for now, I have business to to take care of!

...and just as I make it to the stairs, I find someone walking up them and right towards me- Prince Alberto!

Thank God I don't have to go down there after all.

More than eager to away from there, I step back and out of the stairwell so that the Prince can pass.

"Hm?" Prince Alberto notices me standing against the wall. "Oh, Andreas. Good morning."
"Good morning, Your Highness," I say, bowing to him. "I noticed that you were just in the dungeon, would it be alright if I asked what brought you down there?"

Much like the folks from Granache that he admires, Prince Alberto never was one for all the formal stuff... but we're still out here in the open and I don't want any rumors starting about how I'm an impolite jerk or anything so I'm going to keep up appearances for now.

"Just seeing if our 'guest of honor' wants to talk yet," the Prince sighs.

He's talking about the Captain of what was once Marconetti's Fifth Royal Guard Division... after some particularly horrible mess, he was captured and brought down to the dungeon. Though he's been reduced to just his upper torso, his abilities as a Contractor of the Earth element have made it so that he's actually able to survive like that. And to keep him from escaping, the King himself placed a ton of wards down there that keep anyone who has less magical energy than he does from using magic of that element.

And since this is Celestino I'm talking about, there's no chance in hell of him getting out.

"No luck, I take it?" I ask.
"Nope," the Prince says, shaking his head. "He just laughed in my face when I asked him if he wanted to cooperate with us in return for possibly restoring his bottom half, and then he taunted me about all the loyal Guards who died thanks to his actions. To be honest, I wanted to go in his cell and strangle the man right then and there, but that wouldn't accomplish anything."

He's smiling as he says this, but it's certainly not out of happiness.

Fixed a few mistakes and added some minor NPCs because why the hell not.

I don't want to spoil his mood by telling him about his little sister getting beat up, so I think I'll leave out that little detail. Besides, I'm not sure if he even knows about Elena's sword hobby to begin with.

"From what she wrote, she seems to be pretty happy over there," I say. "She misses everyone back here, but she's enjoying herself with cakes and playing with Sir Vincent's daughters and all that."

Yeah, that's enough socializing for one morning. Although it is kind of lonely without Elena around to constantly ask me weird questions or sing songs or talk to that rabbit of hers, it's not like I'm getting paid to loiter around the castle and talk all day. Nope... while I am a nobleman, I'm the type that actually serves my country. Regardless of how much I regret choosing to do so sometimes.

And so, I go back around the way I came and stop at the audience hall. That's where I've received my orders for the past few days, and chances are that today will be the same.
