You knew nekomata were powerful, but you didn't realize that they were this frighteningly powerful. On the other hand, Rie has said she would help you, and it would be difficult for her to get her daily offering of takoyaki if she did something unpleasant like feed you to her furry minions. You are quite thankful you don't suffer from that common anime weakness of heroes where they're afraid of cats. Which does bring up the question of whether Kiku-chan is an anime heroine or not. But that's not important now!

You do try to speak, to ask where she is taking you, but the sorcery she is using seems to simply disallow the effort entirely. It's possible your talisman might allow you to break the spell....but so far, Rie's been helpful, if incredibly abrupt and entirely unpredictable. You drop your Water Eyes – they're doing you no good at the moment.

Strangely, the darkness and the silence and the movement of the youkai and cats around you all seems very familiar.

Suddenly you're in a massive courtyard of dead grass, black dirt, a wrought iron fence, and facing a decrepit mansion. The night sky is cloudy and dark, the windows are dark and there is barely any noise outside of your breathing and the soft swish of your and Rie's clothing. You can speak again, and you could probably stop walking if you wanted to, but Rie seems to be intent on dragging you into the spooky mansion you have never seen before despite how familiar all this feels. Almost deja vu levels of familiarity,

While you're fairly certain this is one of those places that should technically be in the more elite areas of Tokyo, you're not entirely surprised it's this close to Shinjuku. It has the look of a place that's fallen into difficult times, with people who try to keep it in good repair, but who are just overwhelmed with whatever is going on in there life. There isn't a car in front, and most of the windows are dark, but you can see things in the windows. Desks, chairs, bookshelves, bric-a-brac. Perhaps the home of an antiquarian or an old couple.

Rie steps forward quickly, her tails lifting her skirt up quite nicely, and it's interesting how her tails move in counterpoints to her derrière as well as each other. And she really does have a nice derrière, that just happens to be attacked to a powerful and very dangerous youkai. And is covered in white satin, which you really never understood the point of, since anything that goes with white satin invariably gets really hot. Taking your cue from the relative quietness of the disturbingly familiar grounds as you approach the mansions, you ask softly, “Where have you brought me to, Rie-sama? Please don't tell me the place is haunted, because that's a Western holiday.”

Rie glances back at you, her cornflower blue eyes nearly eaten by the black pools of her pupils. “She owes me a favor, so 'm gettin' it now.” Oddly, she speaks quietly too, which is not what you expected of the brazen nekomata. She leads you to the door, and pauses, then glances at you, then at the door, as though deciding. In true cat fashion, she calls loudly, “OPEN UP IN THERE! I WANT IN!”

“I could knock on the door, it you like, Rie-sama,” you mention casually, amused by how your question causes her tails to curl over at the top, the sign of a happy cat. One can't help but wonder how sensitive the base of her tails are, really. You know there isn't a dragonette in the world who doesn't like that sweet spot receiving attention.

“OPEN THE – oh, there you are. It's about time.” The door has swung open, though you don't see anyone doing said opening. Nor do you sense anyone other than yourself and Rie, fro that matter. Rie walks in without hesitation, her hand still holding yours quite firmly, forcing you to follow.

The foyer is a little dusty and somewhat spare, a single coat rack and a small roll-top desk from Europe the only things present. There is a large book on the, the paper old and thin, looking almost like translucent mulberry bark washi paper. There are names listed and Rie steps over – still holding your hand – as she inks the brush and writes 'Rie and Important Guest' in the book.

A soft noise of shuffling feet causes you to glance behind you to see who opened the door so you can thank them....

You don't tighten your grip on the nekomata's hand; you shift your grip slightly, locking your hand to the muscles that will move first if she tries to let go. Because if she does let go, you will not be finding your way back home without dealing with some of the nastiest darkness that exists in the spirit world. She doesn't seem to notice and you step up, tugging her skirt slightly. “I would have thought you preferred silk, Rie-sama.”

The nekomata pauses, then looks over her shoulder....which immediately causes both her tails to turn into electrified bolts of white hot fuzz. She yanks her skirt down, pushing both her tails down as well. Despite her reaction, Rie doesn't blush in the least, and simply starts walking down the hall.

You follow, glancing about the place. There is only one other servant that you spot, a bull-headed gozu oni, who is sitting at a desk far too small to accommodate him and who seems to be painstakingly carving tiny pagodas at his desk. Ignoring this servant as well, Rie walks deeper into the ancient building, and you do note that most of the rooms are filled with discarded furnishing, bookshelves, piles of books which are not actually in the bookshelves, cribs, carriages for babies, old stands, and one disturbing room filled with mannequins. She arrives at her goal, and she takes a breath to start calling for someone to open the door when it opens outward.

This room is completely contrasted to all the others. Rows of books fill the bookshelves, two thirds of them painstakingly lettered upon the spine, and the sizes of those numbers are quite frankly ridiculous. A pristine window, before which sits a young looking oni-gal, with long horns, at a wide and heavy looking ebony desk. She is peering through thick spectacles at a massive book, one of those from the wall, and writing in teeny-tiny letters an entry within that book. Her robes are Autumn robes, in red, and she has a set of Imperial Robes off to one side, hanging upon a stand. Along with a naginata with no tsuba.

“What do you want Ryiekatsumoun? I am very busy.” She utterly ignores the both of you otherwise.

Rie yanks you forward somewhat unsuccessfully, as you follow her movement and step before the desk before she has the opportunity to drag you forward. “Fix her!” she commands imperiously.

You bow over your hand as Rie makes her outrageous demand, unwilling to release the cat's small hand from your grasp to bow any more politely than that, which your hostess will undoubtedly understand. “Moushiwake arimasen....” It's the most sincere apology you can make for your intrusion, barring apologizing for existing at all. That does get the oni-girl's attention and she looks up at you over her spectacles, her dark eyes pools of liquid night surrounded by rings of burning iron.

You do manage a one handed salute to another warrior – her Imperial robes aren't just for show, and that weapon is definitely not a practice weapon, since the whole thing is a single piece of metal with a wrapping about the central part of the shaft. You glance sidelong at Rie, who doesn't seems to be bothered by the fact that you are fuming just a bit.

“I want you to fix her,” she demands imperiously once more, her tails lashing angrily and undoubtedly exposing her panties again. The mysterious book-keeper sighs and sets her brush down, then removes her spectacles and sets those aside as well.

“Fix her in what way, Ryiekatsumoun? She's injured, but surely there are those who can deal with such things in your world. It seems like the waste of a boon to me.” She looks at you with those burning eyes. “No offense intended to you or yours, Ryuu Ryukusa.”

Rie hacks from the back of her throat – oh, that was a cat-spitting noise, not a cough. “You owe it to me, and that's what I want. You ain't telling me she ain't broken ether, I can see it and so can you.” Rie's tails are lashing harder and she looks adamant.

Your as yet unnamed hostess sighs softly and pushes her chair back. “Very well, if that's what you want.” Opening the drawer in front of her, she takes out a black paper charm and then pulls out a glass and gold pen, a European calligraphy pen. She taps it twice against her blotter to get the ink flowing, and then scrawls on the charm in silver, flowing lines. Cloud Script, like Er Yin-sensei uses. Rising, she walks around the desk to hand you the charm. “This gives you permission to be here for one trip, so you can let go of Rie's hand if you like. If you don't mind accompanying me, we can get this taken care of and Rie can take you home and stop ~pestering~ me.” She gives the God's Eye Nekomata a glare that you wouldn't have dared to try.

Rie looks supremely bored now.

She looks rather startled, but almost immediately pads around the desk in cat form and curls up in the oni-girl's chair, eliciting a frustrated sigh from your hostess.

The oni-girl bows and indicates the doorway. “Please accompany me, Ryuu Ryukusa.”

You hold up your hand first and she looks up at you, almost as placidly as Akari can, save those burning eyes which are much more dangerous. “I would like to know what you mean by 'fix me' as there are situations surrounding me that require some careful consideration before anything is done to my mikoto.” She looks a touch surprised at your use of the Koshinto term for kami-self. “While if it is Rie it may not be helped, nevertheless I would rather not cause a catastrophe by accident. On purpose is a different matter.”

Standing up, your hostess glares at her chair, though Rie is hidden by the desk from you both. “I understand your concerns, Ryuu Ryukusa, and I will be happy to explain if you will accompany me.” With that matter cleared up slightly, you allow her to escort you from the room, and walk with her towards the back of the mansion.

“My name is Goyutomi Emi, and my duty is to record the names and souls of those who are reincarnating outside the usual Buddhist channels. My concerns are generally with the mikoto of Koshinto worshipers and the occasional rebirth of a kami. I work under the auspices of Amaterasu-Omikami and Kamuy Fuchi.” it doesn't take any effort to grasp exactly what that means for you. “Naturally I know all the important facts concerning your spiritual situation, if not those of the living world.”

In fact, if you have your landmarks right, you should be about a half mile away from the Tokyo Radio Tower.

Which would stand right in the middle of the crater you're about two hundred feet from.

You take a moment, and consider. What is in that crater – well, you have to admit that you know what is in that crater. You are in that crater. Or more accurately, your true mikoto, your kami-self, your own soul. One that needs to be....fixed. Not healed, not tended, not repaired....fixed. As if it is so broken or twisted, so ~changed~ that merely healing it is impossible.

Emi-sama is clearly a Fire oni-child, and one in the direct service of a Great Kami. They're not known for their healing capabilities. Apparently 'fixing' your mikoto involves the use of the strength and determination of a very old Fire oni-child, one who is ritually bound to serve Izanami and is a sorceress as well.

You shake your head. “You must do as you see fit, Emi-sama. I will wait here, without the promise.”

Emi inclines her head and walks over to the pit, looking down into it. She pulls out that glass and metal pen and writes something on a piece of black paper....which she lets fall into the pit, a breeze carrying it towards the center as it sinks out of sight. The oni-child claps her hands twice and starts shouting to Izanami, calling upon her power....and a vast black shadow descends to stand in her place and she prays. The shadow shifts and wavers, but you can still see the hint of a female figure, and can feel the presence of the First Woman, Goddess of Creation.

And Destruction.

The pit erupts in green flames that slowly bleed into blue, and then violet, before returning to crimson. You feel nothing, but you can see that something hideous, something horrible has been destroyed in those cleansing flames. The flames shift, and waver, and cast serpentine coils surge, sluggish and massive. They fill the pit entirely as they burn incandescent, and slowly sink into quiescence. Each one must have been the thickness of a building, and you saw neither head nor tail.

The shadow departs as the sorceress claps her hands twice more, and she is clearly shaken as she turns to walk back to you.

Despite your unwillingness to see what lies within that smoldering, still glowing pit, you move quickly to her side and offer your support. Emi blinks at you, her eyes unfocused and the radiance gone from them, making them surprisingly gentle pools of darkness. It takes no effort to avoid looking into that pit. You saw enough, perhaps more than any living person should have seen.

You help her away from the pit, the spirit s and ghosts moving in the darkness of Yomi, agitated and distressed by the display of the Kami who rules this world. “Thank you. I appreciate the kindness you've shown me.”

She shakes her head. “It is my duty. It was a debt I owed to Ryiekatsumoun and it is now paid.” Despite that she seems pleased by your appreciation. Unsurprisingly, you can see the cat herself padding fearlessly along the road towards you. “Mention the name,” she mutters darkly, straightening and composing herself, clearly not wanting to demonstrate weakness in front of Rie, though the cat has already seen.

“Nevertheless, I think I might be in your debt. At least allow me to make an offering in the name of your Kami, Miko-Emi-sama.” She looks at you strangely, your odd vernacular confusing her at first....then she nods, giving you tacit approval for the offering.

Rie steps up to you, taking human form as instantaneously as she does her cat form. “You look better. Was it that bad that it took so long?”

You stare at Rie, but Emi's reply is reassuring. “It was no more than ten minutes, Ryiekatsumoun. And I've paid my debt. Please leave me alone.”

You cautiously reach over to Rie and she watches you do so with the same calm wariness as any predatory animal would. She does not bite your hand off at the wrist as to slowly slide your hand along her pure white hair between her ears, which she lays flat, but her eyes also close. “Sorry, Rie-sama, I have to walk Emi-sama back to the mansion, to finish the last things we have to do there. Then, if you don't mind, I could use some help getting home.”

She doesn't answer as you pet her, and Emi is looking at you as though you've gone totally insane.

“And I appreciate the effort you've made on my behalf too, Rie-sama.” That does cause her to open her eyes, though they half-close with every stroke of your hand across her soft hair.

“I told you I'd help. I helped. You still have to give me takoyaki when you're home.” Rie turns and slips past you, sliding her body against yours lightly, letting you feel the softness of her breasts along your arm, much like a cat might do if it were brushing up against your leg. “I'll be back.” Then she's padding off into the darkness of Yomi, a cat clearly unafraid of anything she might meet.

“Stupid youkai,” Emi mutters softly, through she's faintly blushing, and her blood is running a little hot now. You kind of wonder how the oni-girl got into Rie's debt, but it's an incredibly impolite thing to ask.

As you walk back to the mansion, you find yourself wondering the same thing....

It would be a very bad fight - she's a Fire oni, but she's well into her fourth or fifth century of life, and she has contracts with great Kami and true Youkai. Not to mention what horrors or warriors she has trapped behind her Barriers. In Barrier Combat she'd have the edge on age and experience, being able to power through Ryukusa's water abilities despite fire's normal weakness.

If Ryukusa got the drop on her and simply assassinated her, that would be her only guaranteed win. Otherwise, Emi wins due to resources.

That's what offerings and prayers are all about in Koshinto and Shinto alike. That's why there are offerings places at altars even for gods of disease, death, pain, and destruction. Mind you that's no guarantee - you can hope she listens and accepts your offerings. Hinata-hakase might have a more direct line, but Kiku-chan might have a more mature and balanced outlook on it, since Izanami is closer to a koshinto kamuy than a kami..
