The constable was a harder position, you felt. Sabeen seemed a good candidate, but she was a woman. In the saddle she was as good as any man, but how would the old fathers deal with an unveiled girl in arms?

You decide Tancred is the better option, and have him marked for the job.

You decide to spend your time in your study, drafting letters of greeting to the local lords, and letters of invitation to those further afield. One you spend a great deal of time on in is a letter to Archbishop Albero in Trier, as well as your father in Koblenz. It took you longer than you thought to draft them properly, extending to each an invitation to visit your new holdings. Your father had never been much of a land owner. He might be impressed by your lordship. He wasn't impressed by much.

To those near and far you extend a letter of greetings and offerings of hospitality. Count Hugh had left you with a list of knights and lords that you should do well to greet, and to each of them you send a small note offering your hospitality in the upcoming harvest festival.

It was no casual matter, once you were satisfied with the contents of the letters you sent them off with all haste. It would be no way of knowing for a year or more if the letters reached Germany.

For the rest of the time you got to know your land a little. Solomon had nothing kind to say of the young men he had been given.

You secured your lion helm and mounted, bow slung across the horn of your saddle.

It was a party of five that rode out toward the farmlands. Both squires had spears and armour to match their knights. Jacques was proving himself a useful young man, a ready fill-in for your own squire. Might be you had need of another squire again, lest Hugo get overburdened with responsibilities.

You spy a pair of farmers waiting. Dark burned men with worried frowns.

"It has taken a child," one said in broken Greek, "We do not know if she still lives. We doubt it."
