[x] Not... exactly. (Tell her the full truth)

“Not... exactly.” You say, then begin to tell Merlin about the orders, Longstreet's letters, and Ice's utter lack of options.

“I-I won't go back. N-not even for that. I-if I c-can't fly with F-frank, I won't F-fly.” Merlin says, her voice panicked, but firm. “I-I'd rather hand in my w-wings a-and resign.”

“Merlin...” Ice starts, but Merlin shakes her head.

“I-I wasn't a witch until F-frank made me one.” Merlin responds. “I-if I'm not flying w-with him, t-then I'm not a w-witch anymore a-and they don't n-need me.”

Brigitte nods. “She got a point, sistah. De matron, she be de one to tell girls dey ain't got what it take to be a witch. She be in a tight spot if 'mantha here decide ta leave.”

“But she is a witch!” Ice says, exasperated. “That's why she's here.”

Brigitte grins and shakes her head. “No, ya be wrong. She be a talent, like de Baron. Dey different. De findings at Barin, dey not be so sure yet what dey mean. Meybbe she is a witch, dat true. But dey no be sayin dat yet, only dat de baron an her, dey make a good team.”

“So they're replacing her with a witch. It still doesn't mean we've got any way of preventing it.” Ice says. “I can't do anything, not without losing my career and even if I do that, my replacement will just transfer them off anyway.”

>>
Brigitte nods thoughtfully. “Dat be true, dey do be havin ya in a bad place. Meybbe I can be helpin a sista out, mmm?”

She looks over at you. “Ya give me de baron, no questions axed, for tree night. I take de little one too, and deir plane. It be leavin ya short I know, but ya be havin dat new witch, she be takin up some of de slack. When dey come back, I be able to work wit NAVSPECWAR an JSOC an we meybbe pull one over on dem, oui?”

Ice looks doubtful at the suggestion, and Brigitte shrugs. “All I be offerin ya is a way out. It be up to ya to take it or leave it.”

Ice looks at you. “What do you think, Frank?”

[x] Sounds like a good deal to me.

“Sounds like a good deal to me.” You say, shrugging. “Still leaves us Davis, though.”

Ice nods. “I can't just send her home, but if Merlin isn't leaving, I can't keep her here.” She says, then waves that away. “It's whatever. I'll handle it.”

“What about Joseph?” Wendy asks. “Isn't he to be leaving soon for Annapolis?”

Ice nods. “Yeah but that means he's still a couple years out of flight, even if he gets fast tracked. He's no help, even if he does eventually end up here. Don't worry about it, I'll handle it regardless. You three need to get back down to the pad, I don't want you caught up here if the raiders show back up, ok? Get going. Brigitte, sticking around for a second? I need to talk.”

Brigitte nods- you catch it out of the corner of your eye as you stand up and pick Merlin up, depositing her on your shoulders, while Wendy opens the door.

“So it that why you were as short with Matron Longstreet as you were?” She asks, once you're safely down the hall- the Japanese witch's unnerving gaze following you. You nod.

“Yeah. She's been trying to play dirty to get what she's wanted the entire time, it's getting old by this point.” You say. “She's going after Ice to get us.”

Wendy nods. “It seems, though, you've got friends who will go to great lengths to keep you here. That must be nice.”

Honestly I don't mind Davis coming into the squadron or even that she's trying to become Frank's RIO. She may have completed her time at the academy so she may possibly understand sparkle theory more than Merlin making her one of the best candidates for understanding or testing out how the hell Frank and Merlin's talent works by being a control group. As silly as it sounds when dealing with magic.

The problem is that Longstreet is trying to force a solution out of this whole entire thing when this is a situation that requires a more delicate touch. She could've easily sent Davis to observe and be a mediary. Even if she was suspected to be a spy that wouldn't be something detrimental to the group. Longstreet is working for the long term goal, but she sabotages her own efforts by being too hard handed.

>>35824206
Except for the whole, Longstreet wants her there so she can immediately poach her and not let her actually do any of that kind of work thing.
>>
>>35824073
Mainly I think that Longstreet's been involved in the ugly side of witch politics for too long so she made the mistake of defaulting to aggressive dealing and leverage when it came to Spellcaster squadron. If she simply apologized (falsely or otherwise) to Merlin and made a more passive inquiry into Merlin's abilities when they first came up at worst she'd have at worse a tense relationship with the squadron rather than outright hostility. Even now she could've made a move that would somewhat patch things up. She's basically using a power play over and over again despite the fact that a simple admission of fault (that loses her nothing) and would help everyone involved.

It's kind of sad really, but that's politics for you.

Playing devil's advocate here.

Davis may be just as effective as Merlin, if not moreso. Davis may or may not be an ardent Longstreet supporter.

Until we give her a shot, we can't make any judgements about her beforehand. She may indeed be an innocent party in all this.

And besides, why can't we poach her for ourselves? What's her excuse for not having a pilot assigned to her? Why can't Spellcaster or another unit near the front get one of these kinds of witches?

What if Fronk and Merlin are so effective primarily because they combine the best of witchcraft and steelwings? If saddling a witch and a pilot together can consistently produce results, why aren't more people doing it? It could become standard practice.

At one such party the group was discussing a particularly shitty schoolmate who had done something awful. Everyone's like "fuck that guy!"

Exchange student busts out the Taking-It-To-The-Next-Level disagreement, says "We should just burn his fucking house down." Offers to go get some gasoline, wanted to do it right then. Was fucking TOTALLY SERIOUS.

[x] You think you don't? You're one of us now, don't forget.

You laugh, wrapping an arm around her shoulder and pulling her in for a sort of side-on hug. “You think you don't? You're one of us now, don't forget.” You say, and she seems to pick up a bit at that.

“It's just- I'm not used to it. Sorry, sir.” She says, somewhat sheepishly.

You laugh again, letting her go. “Don't apologize! It's fine, we get it. But you are with us, now, and don't have to worry about it like you used to, you'll always have a place with the unit, ok?”

She nods, but you're not quite sure she gets it. “I mean it, Wendy. No one's going to fuck with you, not and get away with it. You're safe here, ya know? Well,” You amend. “As safe as you can be when you're in a combat unit.”

She nods again. “Do you- I mean, if it's not trouble, do you think we can do something for my birthday?” She asks, quietly, but kind of hopefully. “I understand if we can't, what with supplies and everything, but-”

She shakes her head. “I know it's silly, but I haven't had a real birthday party since I was ten. I always had extra duty or classes or something assigned to me in the academy, and in the squadrons, it was the same, so I never really had a chance.”

“N-nothing?” Merlin asks, and Wendy shakes her head.

“Well, one year I did get a cupcake from a bakery off base a few days before, and saved that.” She says, smiling. “That was a good year. The squadron maintenance unit let me have an office in the hangar and let me take a nap.”

“That doesn't sound like much of a birthday.” You say. She shrugs, a smile returning to her face.

“It seemed amazing, sir.” She said. “It came at a low point, for me, and helped me carry on. I think I should have resigned, had they not let me have that.”

“Well, I can't promise you anything, but I'm sure I'm not going to be the only one that's all for giving you a proper birthday celebration.” You say, feeling Merlin's weight shift as she nods.

“Thank you, sir.” Wendy says, actually hugging you as you stop next to their seats- Katya, who was reading by the maintenance lights, looks up briefly and quirks an eyebrow.

“Everything is going well?” She asks, as Wendy sits down.

[x] Everything's going good! We're going to have a birthday party for Wendy.

“Everything's going good!” You say, taking a folding chair of your own and tossing Merlin a poncho liner from your flight bag as she takes a chair of her own. “We're going to have a birthday party for Wendy.”

“A birthday party?” Katya echos.

You nod. “A birthday party! It'll be fun.”

Katya shrugs. “It will be fun, yes, but how are we to get the things for one? It is not as if we can just have cake and balloons and presents flown in with our next resupply.”

“We've got a pair of P Sixty Sevens.” You say, grinning. “And I'm only on nights right now, so as long as I can wiggle the crew rest, I'm ok.”

“We also are having excellent cooks.” Katya points out. “And it is more practical for them to be making the cake, and easier too.”

“But what about presents!” You ask, then look at Wendy. “Wendy cover your ears.”

She covers her ears, smiling as she does so.

“What are we gonna get her anyway?” You ask.

Katya shrugs. “It is your idea, Frank. It is your responsibility.” She looks sideways at you. “You will take responsibility, yes?”

You should have had Merlin cover her ears.

Wow, just fucking wow you are stupid as fuck.

Africa has always been the same, and no it can't feed itself, for the most part it is unsustainable barren wasteland.

That you think it could survive on its own and thrive and that only recently chaos took over shows how little you know.

The thing with nuclear power and GMO foods is that we don't fully understand the long term ramifications of their use. This is nothing new, just look at things like leaded gasoline and agent orange. The work of a single chemist managed to accidentally the ozone layer in a geological millisecond, and children are still being born without eyes in Vietnam.

Is nuclear power going to cause more problems than it solves? Are GMO foods going to give us all cancer? It's a question worth asking because if we get it wrong, we'll all be dead and gone by the time our grandchildren pay the price.

>>35826292
>untested GMOs were started their use back in the 70's, and interestingly enough, kids with food allergies skyrocket as well
>Correlation does not equal causation
Indeed it does not. GMOs might be a factor but it would only be one of MANY possible factors which are probably all at work. Things like Celiac's disease were a thing back in Roman times, it's possible that we are simply better at recognizing allergies today.

>This world can feed it self just fine long before the GMOs
>Tell that to the seven billion+ and growing population that is expanding evermore exponentially
No really we could, if food preservation technology was perfect that is. The sheer amount of food that gets thrown out uneaten every day (every HOUR even) would probably blow your mind. I've heard of figures as high as 40% in reference to specific cities or businesses like bakeries.

More people die from radiation due to coal plants than from nuclear power plants
Living near a coal plant gives you as much background radiation as living near a nuclear plant
Deaths from nuclear power, scaled to how much power is provided, are orders of magnitude lower than other forms of energy, including solar and wind. This is including from uranium mining.

But no one cares because muh china syndrome and wild fearmongering.

>we don't understand the long term ramifications of nuclear power

After 60+ years of its use? I'd like to say we got it pretty down at this point. People like to say "b-but Chernobyl/Three Mile Island/Fukushima!" But what? There's been three major accidents in the 60+ years of its use and all three of those can and have been pinned on human error or manufacturing faults.

If you build it right and run it right, hey, there's no danger! The only issue is the nuclear waste and where to put it, and due to poor business practices and mishandling there's further stigma around nuclear waste, but yet again, people who aren't shitheads aren't going to be dumping it in unsecured areas. And we're even inventing ways of using that nuclear waste in further energy production!

All it is is stigma.

Most people don't know who are their own representative in their government. Most people know who the big star on the Telly or the net than who runs the government. Fluff might be right and not know it. Government pass all sorts of laws but never enforce them. Case in point.

Yup, never change. its funny as hell (and somewhat interesting as well)
>>
>>35827077
You do realise most of the stuff on that website is a joke right?

But please, keep on propagating those stupid myths.
>>
>>35827077
As an Australian who is eminently aware of his laws and political representatives, I can safely point out that most of those are bogus, with a select few either limited to a defunct administrative region or have very, very good reasons.

The whale one, for instance, is in consideration because people have been graffitiing beached whales lately, in addition to cutting bits off of them "to see what all the whale meat fuss the Japs are making is about". And proceed to get sick because it's rotting whale meat you morons.

And some areas get a *lot* of beached whales. Like, dozens annually.

Like that one time a GM's telling of his sleep-deprivation-inspired magical realm became an argument over how much of Rome's advances originated in the works of other cultures

To all Aussie here... isn;t it, like, 3-4 PM down there now?
Don't tell me you all are posting from your workplace.
>>
>>35827124

normally, I'd make fun of the people cutting bits off beached whale and eating it.

but I live in the american south, and have actually met people who make roadkill stew, so....

can we call it even?

And yes I am posting from work.

>>
>>35827144
The trick to eating roadkill is making sure it's fresh. I met a couple of dudes once who ran over a deer once that jumped out in front of their car. They slit it's throat, took it home and butchered it, and ate the entire thing in one sitting after smoking some weed and getting the munchies. Didn't get one upset stomach out of any of them, although to be fair the weed may have helped with that.

It's nearly 8pm here in New Zealand.

>>35827124
I remember how in QLD they posted notices to not attempt to blow up whale carcasses with TNT after one town tried it with a couple hundred kg's of explosive, and it rained tons of whale meat over the town...
>>
>>35827227
>Dumb laws are all over the place.
All over the place including the rest of the world, I mean seriously look at Sweden and some of the stupid shit in America.
>>
>>35827011
Right kingdom. I can never remember the full sequence, Domain, Kingdom, Phylum something something. Ages ago my science teacher had this little song that was supposed to help you remember the proper order and had words that matched with the first letters. Hell if I can remember THAT but I think it had something to do with kings and socks.

>>35827124
>>35827144
>exploding whale carcasses
Fuck, now I keep remembering that gif of the whale autopsy.

I can't imagine why people would try to eat it. Reminds me a bit of all those surstromming videos of people opening the can and finding milky white sewage inside. LOL SWEDES EAT THIS SHIT THROWING UP ON CAMERA IS FUNNY RIGHT GAIS? No you idiots, it looks like sewage because it's been shipped across the ocean, it's probably expired, you didn't store it properly and you opened it underwater.

>>35827151
I know they salvage moose roadkill in alaska and give the meat to the food bank. Really as long as the animal is fresh and the impact didn't rupture the bowels and contaminate everything it's not any different from other game meat.
>>
>>35827144
I have eaten 'possom before. But that was from a freshly hunted one and not road kill. They are not bad if you prep and cook them right.
>>
>>35827244
Agreed.

The joke was that I don't work
>>
>>35827286
Oh Jesus Christ the cancer agreed with me someone pass the bleach.
>>
>>35827215

Yeah, exactly. It sounds a lot worse than it is- I mean, yes, it is roadkill, but it's not like they find a week old rotting lump of meat and fur and go "Damn billy bob dat look lak gud eatin chuck it up thurr in tha truck". Usually it's just deer you lose some of the meat on because motor vehicles ain't the best hunting tools in ever, and damage part of it.
>>
>>35827322
That and getting glass and plastic fragments in the meat is a bad thing too.
>>
>>35827337
nah. builds character
>>
>>35827378
Now you make me imagines that Pa Bishop at one points cook one of roadkills they found for his children.

Again; a ton of those are fake, though I do spot a bunch that are hilariously true.

Doesn't change the original point, however; that there is no law requiring kids to wear hats in any context; and never has been.
>>
>>35827378
Ghost, I can see that, but my uncle taught me, being able to remove the guts, and more importantly removing the bladder with out nicking them builds character.
So does being a Tripfag in here

I think I see the misunderstanding here. The postings often say 'Mandate' and I guess they are just taken as strong suggestions down under. But up in the US, the term 'Mandate' often are understood as a law or regulation put into place by the president or the government bureaucracy. Just saying.
>>
>>35827535

I'm just going to point out I can't find the word "mandate" in any of the links the cancer posted, the two blog-type things misrepresent the "requirement" for wearing hats, and the WHO/SunSmart links are basically just saying "This is a good idea, guize".

Regardless, while there *are* rules put in place by individual schools and such; that could be what people are seeing and assuming is law, especially since the rules generally follow the Sunsmart Guidelines to a tee.

Plus; places like sunsmart are NGOs, and can only make suggestions or recommendation; they can't actually implement or enforce any actual rules. That said most do follow their suggestions because they are damn sensible guidelines.
>>
>>35827535
"Mandate" is not an official US legal term.
