You open your computer and start skimming through the emails around when Clara moved in with her mother and father. A little bit after the elementary school enrollment email, there's one from her father to her mother: "REMINDER: Clara moving in next Saturday!" Once she moves in, there's several emails of Maxine Hunter sending cute pictures of little Clara - you can't help but saw "aww" when you see them - to various friends. Some of the reply emails are to the effect of "I didn't know you had a daughter;" others are to the effect of "finally, we get to see your kid."

In the photos, little Clara is cute and precocious and climbs all over everything and stuffs her mouth with candy until her fingers and lips are coated brown with chocolate. All that kind of stuff. There's a few home videos you let play, muted, in the background, where little Clara dances and tugs at her mother's dress to whine for more candy and sings and plays with some big old dog.

Clara looks at you from over on the couch, curious. "What's got you so fascinated?"

"Pictures of you as a little girl," you reply, before turning your attention back to the computer screen. There's nothing particularly suspicious about the pictures themselves, so you try to focus in on what passes between mom and dad, since that's where anything suspicious will probably be.

"Her birthday is Nov 2, 2016," her father notes in one email, in reply to Maxine's question. Odd that she wouldn't remember something like that.

"Clara's first birthday party," is mentioned in one email in October 2022. A followup a few minutes later clarifies that "she's six, but this will be her first PARTY, sorry for any confusion!"

It's a personal email, and she seems pretty good at compartmentalizing.

You type in a new search term - Ezekiel. The only other kid from the facility she grew up whose name she remembers. The kid shows up by name only a couple times, most recently in an automated alert following a news story of "Ezekiel Watts" being arrested in 2032 on public exposure charges. The other one is from a "Dr. Naomi Watts," mentioning her son, from way back in 2023. Searching for Watts' name finds that "Zeke" would have been a better search term, so you follow up on it.

Little Zeke, it seems, also appears suddenly in 2022, at the age of six. There's no references to him before then. Other than that, he seems to a perfectly ordinary boy (besides the public exposure charges in 2032, which don't seem to have resulted in any jail time).

Naomi Watts is a scientist with a PhD in Biology; her dissertation is an in-depth analysis of human growth between ages two and six. She's happily married to Christine Haston Watts, who, according to various emails, was a surrogate mother for their child, with Naomi's brother contributing his spunk. Dr. Watts worked for Temporos, the company that put Maxine Hunter on the map, before it fell apart financially back in 2025.

I had a quest I was working on/considering running a while back with a very socially adroit protagonist who would describe the motivations of NPCs (that way players could follow along with them), and holy shit there just is not space to fit much at all. Still, two new names: Taylor Styles and James Herbert. Plus the maybe-case of Kimberly Watson. Potential former bedfellows of your Clara.

Your stomach growls, prompting you to close the computer. You rub at one of your eyes before glancing over at Clara, who's staring at you expectantly.

"Clara," you start, "want something to eat?"

You let the conversation drift off for a while, and eventually you wind up asking her about her plans for her life.

The parallels do not elude you. When she finishes her meal, you tie her arm back up, and she pouts a little but cooperates. You sit back down, considering things; Clara just sits there, quietly and intensely staring at you.

"I'd get up to hug you, but, you know." She wriggles uncomfortably beneath the bindings. "Not that I'm complaining! I understand that you're not sure you can trust me, and I'm willing to wait until you are. It'll just make it all the more special when you finally do." She sighs longingly, apparently imagining such a scenario.

You doubt that Maxine is going to be polite about this. Her men shouldn't be able to track you by that call, but that doesn't mean that they won't be searching three times as hard now.

When we've got an eye on her, she can go without the restraints. If we're sleeping, or we need to leave, she gets tied up again. Small steps.

It's also better to stay put for now. Nobody but us knows this safehouse, and if her dudes are out looking for us moving will make us that much more visible. We'll consider moving again if and when our other contact advises us that it's safer to.
