You thank her for assisting in the repairs of Tiny Pete, making sure to use the elaborately formal language that Mami had tried her best to teach you in those rare, stolen moments that you cared enough to ask. This seems to go over quite well with Barbara, the ironclad girl bowing once more, the smoothness in her gesture going beyond human grace or flexibility - and into something almost boneless in its fluidity.

No, it wasn't that all disconcerting to look at, but you did feel a shiver of instinctive revulsion crawling up your spine at the sight of it. ...That uncanny valley thing that you keep hearing about, most likely.

"On behalf of the Fourth Officio, with the authority given to me by my Warmsmith - blessings upon her name - I accept your heartfelt and cherished gratitude, Warmaster Matsuda, and count on your Officio to help us in times of trial and trepidation, as we have done the same here." She straightens up, her eyes briefly sparking pink before settling back into their usual azure glow. "Should our Officios cross paths once more in the future, then let it always be as allies, and never as enemies."

...Yeah. Right. You hope so too.
>>
>>35891463

You turn to look at Tiny Pete's newly-restored form, tapping the handle of Muramasa against your shoulder. ...Wait, she called him the Indomitus Prototype, or something? If he's a prototype, then that means there's an upgraded model of him somewhere, right?

"Oh, yes!" Barbara smiles, clasping both hands in front of her in affirmation - her polished metal fingers making a delicate clinking noise as they smacked together, bringing to mind tiny wind chimes being jostled by a gentle breeze.

"Tiny...um, Tiny Pete, here, as little Misaka has colorfully named him, is a prototype of the Indomitus-pattern Ironform: a humanoid bipedal weapons platform designed to protect its pilot while augmenting their long-ranged and melee combat capabilities to devastating effect."

She gestures towards the armored giant lashed to its metal rack by cables and support harnesses. "We've been very diligent on improving upon his design, with our very brightest at the helm. I'm pleased to report that we may be able to start mass-production for a commercial release anytime soon!"

You blink at the Fourth Officio liaison, and then at Tiny Pete. The rather long-winded description of your robot buddy aside, you couldn't help but hear the unheard implication of her words. She could have just said it outright, but you had a feeling that she consciously held back from doing so.

"Then that means Tiny Pete is..." You let the sentence hang unfinished between the both of you, as you turn to stare back into the robot girl's glowing eyes. There's the smallest quirk of the corners of her lips, before she nods.

>Warmsmith
Now that's a hell of a title. I'm not sure whether to expect something cuddly, spiky, or both.
>>
>>35891498

"NO!" Misaka's scream rings out like a gunshot, and with a flurry of grease-stained blue overalls, your arms dealer pushes past you, past Barbara, before placing herself squarely in front of Tiny Pete. Using herself as the tiniest barricade to protect the armored giant from a rather nonplussed robot girl. "TINY PETE IS MISAKA'S! TINY PETE IS GIFT FROM BIG SISTER MURDERFACE, NO ONE IS TAKING HIM FROM MISAKA!"

"Idiot," Rea breathes from beside you, before stepping forward and talking in a louder, clearer voice. Evidently trying to calm your arms dealer down, something she seems to have done a couple of times already. "Misaka, we already talked about this. Miss Barbara--"

"MISAKA FIXED HIM! TINY PETE WAS BROKEN WHEN MISAKA GOT HIM, AND MISAKA FIXED HIM!" The young Russian girl is crying now, a fact that she'd pulled her goggles on to conceal - but there's no mistaking the worsening shudder in her voice, or the twin trails of moisture dripping down her cheeks, down her chin. "BIG SISTER MURDERFACE, PLEASE TELL STUPID ROBOT GIRL TO GO AWAY!"

Rea looks up at you with an expression approaching apologetic embarrassment. "...Sorry, Warmaster. I tried."

You shake your head, before turning to Barbara. ...Is she really sure that Tiny Pete is the Fourth's property? You're going to need some proof, you just can't hand him over--

"Cross-checking with my Officio's very extensive records proves it, Warmaster Matsuda." Barbara holds up a hand, and pinpricks of light shoot from her fingers to manifest a small holographic model of Tiny Pete over her palm. "Tiny Pete matches the Indomitus prototype Ironform that had mysteriously vanished from our armories fifteen months ago, from the...rather unsightly bronze iconography on his pauldrons to the laser-etched microscopic serial numbers on the inside of his armor plating."

[2/3]
>>
>>35891510

Something approaching regret makes the robot girl's smile appear almost human. "I'm sorry, Warmaster Matsuda, but the Ironform that little Misaka refers to as Tiny Pete is in fact the...lost property of the Fourth." Although she didn't say it, you could tell she almost said 'stolen'.

"NO!" Misaka shrieks again. "TINY PETE IS MISAKA'S! STUPID ROBOT GIRL CANNOT TAKE HIM AWAY!"

Tch. How do you deal with this?

[]Ask Barbara if this can be worked out somehow, to the mutual benefit of your Officios.

Both of these, put together.

"I'm sorry if the loss inconvenienced you - we're not entirely sure how it ended up in our inventory to begin with, but at any rate, he's been extraordinarily helpful. That being the case, I think we owe the Fourth a debt for the aid already rendered, and for its continued service. What sort of price would you ask for us to buy it?"

For some reason I see this being something like "Tiny Pete, or the Prototype, or whatever you want to call it, has been deployed by our Officio several times and has proven extraordinarily capable - hell, it's even saved me from death. As such we're loathe to simply return him, especially as he's an integral part of an upcoming operation. Is there any way for us to retain the services of the prototype that also fulfills the needs of your Officio?"

And let the crap above be testament as to why I should never be a writefag.

[X]Ask Barbara if this can be worked out somehow, to the mutual benefit of your Officios.

They don't NEED Tiny Pete, per se - loss of a single prototype didn't stop them from advancing almost to commercial production stage, after all - but it didn't help them, either, and it must be rather vexing for some expensive tech to walk off like that.

I'd offer them an ongoing research contract. In the real world auto companies often have vehicles in their "auto pool" that are loaned out for employees to use on buisness drives or whatnot, for the express purpose of putting miles on them so techs can later tear them down and examine them in detail, allowing them to study how things held up under wear, tear, impacts, etc. A similar arrangement with the Fourth would let them get the remaining value Tiny Pete has for them, and give us technical support during his (increasingly frequent) tear-down and re-builds.

The only downside is, they need to send someone brave enough to deal with the tiny, tiny, angry cossack.

"Misaka." You call your crying arms dealer by her name, the glowing green tri-slits of her visor swiveling to face you. You beckon her forward with one hand, just as you tuck Muramasa underneath your arm with your other. "Come here."

The tiny Russian hesitates here, briefly glancing towards Barbara, as if suspecting treachery from the Fourth Officio liaison the moment she leaves her spot in front of Tiny Pete. Misaka mumbles something underneath her breath - something in Russian you couldn't really catch or understand - before she finally moves towards you in a tottering run, stumbling a few steps before burying her face right into your stomach. Her visor clattering loudly on the floor as she sobs into the material of your costume.

You run your fingers through the crying arms dealer's hair, patting her a couple of times, allowing her to cry out her rage in the hopes that it'll calm her down long enough for you to get her to apologize to Barbara.

You can understand her being protective of Tiny Pete, sure - you'd probably have done much worse if you'd been in her place, and you absolutely can't stand the thought of saying goodbye to your reliable robot buddy festooned with spikes and skulls and spiky skulls - but Barbara didn't quite deserve being called a stupid robot girl just yet, when all she did was politely point out the truth. And after helping Tiny Pete get repaired, too.

Thankfully, Misaka does manage to calm down long enough to listen to you, and through a grimy, tear-streaked scowl, she grumbles an apology to Barbara that's as heartfelt as a warning shot right between the eyes. The Fourth Officio liaison had the good grace to accept it, however, even deigning to try and pat Misaka on the head herself - an attempt that was quickly thwarted by the little Russian growling in a way that would've made Sayaka proud.

[1/2]
>>
>>35892603

"...Is there any way we can work this out?" You ask Barbara, after Rea had dragged Misaka away to help her finish up Tiny Pete's repairs - more a pretext to keep the emotional arms dealer away from Barbara than anything else. "A way that could be--" You feel your throat close up at the thought of saying something that a watch-wearing dildo would say, but force it anyway. "--mutually beneficial to both our Officios?"

Barbara's smile brightens here. "Why, yes, Warmaster Matsuda, of course! I must say, I was given orders to assess the situation regarding the missing Indomitus prototype--"

"TINY PETE! HIS NAME IS TINY PETE!" Misaka barks from the other end of the repair bay, before being shushed by Rea. Barbara winces here, before smiling again as she continues.

"--Sorry, Tiny Pete, and to judge what kind of reparations we'd insist upon once we recovered our property. Or if we need to actually recover him at all." Her smile turns into a more knowing one. "I see now that the latter seems the wiser decision - not only because we love little Misaka back in headquarters, but also because I've managed to mine quite a bit of data from him just by assisting in his repairs."

Data? You blink. Data about what?

"Everything he's been going through so far!" Barbara seems excited at this, suddenly in the zealous grip of something that makes her eyes glow just a bit brighter. "How his AI has been adapting to all the threats that he's been encountering, as well as the effects of brutal combat encounters on his moving components!"

She gestures to your robot buddy, where Rea and Misaka seems to be trapped in a shouting argument on what bronzed icons to add to the armor covering his right leg: a skull with spikes, or a spike with a skull impaled on it. "Information like that would help us immensely in our work towards the creation of Ironforms like Tiny Pete!"

[2/3]
>>
>>35892623

Huh. Well. You never thought about it like that.

So you just have to...keep taking him with you to operations, then? That's it?

Barbara nods, still smiling. "As well as allow me or one of my colleagues to come over every now and then, to check up on Tiny Pete and mine the data we require."

...Well. She doesn't seem to be asking for much.

How do you react?

Attention! I'm going to be writing another lewd piece after I get part 2 of Wish finished. And I want you, dear readers, to see who gets in. An internal poll got Midori as one winner and a writeup character as the other. So please, vote who you want. You have till Chikuwa when the poll will end!

http://strawpoll.me/2903991

Also, one of the few times I will namefag outside of writeups. Odd.

>>
>>35892647
>[X]Ask Misaka what she thinks about it first.

Also stipulate that we'd need somebody to be present during the extraction to go over the data to determine how sensitive it is. We'll share it regardless, because we do owe a debt, but we just want to have a say in how thoroughly the Fourth classifies it.

>>
>>35892800
Do you mean that Midori will be doing the lewding, or just that there will be some kind of combination of the two? Because some of the characters on here should definitely be the dom if they are chosen like Jade and Gavrill
>>
Regardless of what we decide, Misaka absolutely must be in on the loop. She has authority on repairs and suchlike, but not really the data collection stuff. It might not help to ask her to use different terminology than mining when Misaka's around, too.

It all depends on the situation; Midori may be the rapee or the raper.

Or the two will just be drunk enough to fuck and not care.

I would say it's as much of a part of the NECO persona as the actual writeups, profiles and so on. "Using a name means she wants to be harassed" is... iffy, though I can see where that'd start.

You accept Barbara's offer. It seems reasonable enough - you still get to keep Tiny Pete as your robot buddy and facesmasher, the Fourth gets their data. It's strange how it works out in both your favors, but it's convenient enough that you can't help but say yes.

...Although, you have a couple of concerns--

The Fourth Officio liaison holds up a hand. "We'll only take operational and performance data, Warmaster Matsuda. No visual recordings or audio logs of any sort, not even location data. We just want to measure how he performs, how he adapts, and how his Ironform endures. So you don't need to worry about data breaches or anything of the sort."

Another smile curls Barbara's lips, this one seemingly tailored and practiced to reassure its recipients. "But if you wish that the information be pre-approved before we mine it or take it back to our headquarters, then we have no objection to that. After all, every Officio needs its secrets to survive."

Well. You just want to make sure that you're not accidentally giving anything classified away, that's all. You're glad Barbara's being really reasonable about this, considering Tiny Pete IS her Officio's property.

She giggles here, the sound curiously cute, even with the slightest buzz of static overlaying it. "My primary role involves facilitating communication and goodwill between the myriad Officios and my own, Warmaster Matsuda. Being reasonable is something I'm very good at, among other things." Her glowing blue eyes spark pink again as she seemingly winks at you.

[+100 Barbara Points!]

[1/2]
>>
>>35893942
Anon, please, Barbara is the bleeding edge
She can do ahegao better than any real girl
>>
>>35894009

...At least you've got that settled. You wave Misaka over, to tell her of the deal - and while she seems to be overjoyed (and quite relieved) to know that Tiny Pete is staying, she doesn't seem too eager about having someone from the Fourth come over regularly to examine your robot buddy. She relents a moment later, however - with the condition that only Barbara would be doing the data-mining.

"Stupid robot girl not that incompetent with Tiny Pete," The russian explains grudgingly, still scowling. "Misaka heard stupid robot girl say sorry to Tiny Pete just before removing his AI core. So, not too bad."

"I-I was just...paying my respects to the Ironform's machine spirit, of course, nothing more and nothing less." Barbara chimes in, her voice not as perfectly modulated as before. "Tiny Pete may be a machine, but he feels the way we do. Being taken apart for maintenance, while important and therapeutic, is still an ordeal for him, the way surgery is a traumatic ordeal for meatbags."

...Meatbags?

Barbara flinches here. "A...my apologies, Warmaster Matsuda. Officio argot, for unaugmented Magical Girls. It's...usually a pejorative term, I'm afraid, but I didn't mean it in any offensive capacity, just a slip of the tongue as it were."

Right. Well, none taken, you assure her. You just wanted to know what it meant, even if you are just a meatbag.

"Thank you, Warmaster Matsuda." The Fourth Officio liaison curtseys, clearly relieved.

Anyway, that's one crisis settled, thankfully. And to think you just stopped by here to check up on Tiny Pete! Instead, you had to calm down your surrogate little sister AND negotiate with a representative from a completely different Officio. Fucking watch-wearing dildo work finding you wherever you go, clearly.

Watch-wearing dildo walking! Watch-wearing dildo walking, here!

"Big Sister Murder, Big Sister Murderface!" Misaka calls your attention as she tugs on your sleeve. "Um, why are you down here again? And..." Her eyes narrow up at the sword still stucked underneath your arm. "...Why are you carrying Kirika's sword? Big Sister Murderface is Vindicare, not Eversor!"

You smile down at her and shake your head. No, you came down here to check up on Tiny Pete, because you'll need him for a mission later.

"Oh!" Misaka's eyes grow wide here. "W-well, why didn't Big Sister Murderface just say so?! Misaka will get Tiny Pete operation-ready in no time at all!" She rolls up her sleeves, clearly eager to get to work. "Ah, what kind of armament would Big Sister want Tiny Pete to come with?"

Well...the usual ones? He always came with that big hammer of his, right?

Misaka nods. "Yes, but have new ones too! Is important to pick the right one for the right combat scenario!"

Huh. Well...sure. What are your choices?

With Barbara's help in deciphering Misaka's mile-a-minute explanations filled with mind-numbing technical explanations and jargon, you discover that you can have Tiny Pete outfitted in the following modes:

>Assault: Thunder Hammer + Plasma Gun + Jumpjets
>Devastator: Reaper Autocannon + Bolter + Refractor Shield
>Original Recipe: Thunder Hammer + Bolter + Refractor Shield
> Mystery: ???

What's the mystery mode? You turn to Misaka, puzzled.

"It is a mystery!" Misaka replies, grinning. You turn to Barbara, who simply smiles as well, seemingly in on the joke too.

Which mode would you have Tiny Pete outfitted into?

Urgh. You can't help it, that 'Mystery' mode is gonna drive you crazy no matter what it is, so that's what you pick. The other modes sound cool and all, honestly - the mere mental image of Tiny Pete rocketing skyward one moment and then smashing his giant hammer down onto his enemies as he landed, like the fist of an angry god, is enough to make you salivate in excitement - but you know that you'll always regret not picking the mystery mode, with its tantalizing lack of information.

And sure, there's always the risk of it being disappointing, but...well, Misaka has a good track record for her surprises, at least. Tiny Pete was one of them, and he'd never disappointed every time you called him in, or fought by his side. Not even once.

So yeah. Mystery it is.

"Big Sister Murderface has chosen Mystery!" Misaka cheers, jumping and waving her arms all at once. In contrast, Rea simply pouts, as if displeased at your decision. You ask her about this - and all this does is earn you a puzzled stare.

"...No, Warmaster. This is how I usually look." Your Vindicare Rank Leader tells you, deadpan. "Mystery Mode does take a bit longer to set up, but I don't mind it. Miss Barbara's helping us, and with Misaka's mood considerably improved from earlier, it's something I'm actually looking forward to."

Hah. Well. That seems like a good sign, then. Is Mystery Mode really all that it's cracked up to be?

Rea nods. "I'm not supposed to tell you, because it's a surprise, but..." Shes seems to pause here for dramatic effect. "...it'll be breathtaking."

[1/2]
>>
Oh. That reminds me:

If Misaka and Rea are about done with Pete, send the two of them on to Yuma. Misaka particularly since she's not a Meguca and shouldn't be affected by her.

Need to design her some kind of augmentation. Maybe they could get Babs help: Seems like the fourth may already have some tech in this area, and I think Kyubey would agree that, as our lone prognosticator, Yuma would be worth the expense.

...Right. Suddenly, you can't wait. Yeah, the Prophet op as it is right now is looking pretty dangerous, and not all of you may come back from it, but all the same - you can't help but imagine the look on Oriko's face when you come charging in, not just with your Kill-Team but also with a black-armored giant bristling with all sorts of weaponry. Ready to smash things and kill dreams in the face.

After a few more minutes of trying to eke out more details about Mystery mode from Misaka and Rea - and failing miserably - you also pitch your idea: about Rea piloting Tiny Pete as you call him right into the op itself. This of course got the two arguing again, until it was settled in a good old-fashioned Rock Paper Scissors game. Rea won, after three do-overs. Misaka probably would've thrown another tantrum then, but the good news of Tiny Pete staying made her amenable enough to accept defeat. It was therefore decided that Rea would, indeed, be piloting Tiny Pete in the Prophet op.

You leave the trio hard at work with your robot buddy, with Rea still trapped in a daze from her good fortune.

Well, you should probably check up on your team mates next, huh? They should be...somewhere in Headquarters.

You have time to visit only one venue.

I don't remember off the top of my head, but:

Introtech level (due to being made by a small startup mech design company during 3040 or so)

35 tons, goes 7/11/0. Most popular configurations were 1LLaser/1MLaser/1Flamer, 2 MLaser/2 SRM-4 with 1 ton of ammo.

Biggest selling points were: modular armor (could swing from 4.5t-6.5t without major refit work), modular jump-jets (could fit up to 6 or so without drastic alterations to the chassis), modular weapon brackets, roomy cockpit, ease of maintenance, and disarming grin. Though not quite as versatile as an Omnimech, the players thought that making an easily customizable and recognizable 'mech was the way to go. Plus, selling proprietary weapon housing was thought to be a good way to make money after the 'mech design was sold.

It was early afternoon when Izuho Taniguchi ended her stay of several hours in the Third Officio's hospital wing. A hulking Eversor with a tendency to loom over her patients, wrapped up in what might charitably be called a costume: An ill-fitting patchwork of dark purple woolen cloth, kevlar and pieces of metal armour. Clearly designed, as she knew all too well, for someone who kept the sort of shape that was generally intended for a human; no longer quite sufficient, but it would have to do. In some ways, it looked like something that might be more at home attached to a siege engine of some sort, but then, she supposed, that wasn't entirely off the mark. Not clothing or even armour so much as a holster for a weapon, in a manner of speaking.

It wasn't that she needed the hospital herself, of course. ...Well, that wasn't entirely true. It was a useful vent, whether that was the point of visiting or not. Find a few of the wounded to apply some of her spare energy to. It wasn't enough, but it took some of the strain off her, and it meant that the Third had almost no need for any other medical care. There wasn't a great deal that an application of pure life force couldn't fix.

Best to spend what she could before it overflowed, anyway.

The last ten minutes or so had been occupied by cleaning up the mess she had left, as usual. Every two hours, like clockwork, she would find an ideally discreet place and... there was really no good way to put it. If an injection was out of the question, it would be a knife to the throat or a bullet through the head. The former, this time. Regular near-death experiences to keep her powers in check, distracted with rebuilding a broken body. Still, it was messy, and needless to say, remarkably painful. Practice made it easier, at least.

"I want to live". Four of the most poorly considered words she had ever said.

Mercy Killing 1: Near-Death Experience (forgot the title before)

The walk down to the Venenum's office – as per the instructions on her phone – earned her a good few stares, but then, so did just about every waking moment. A massive, somewhat misshapen Eversor was enough of a sight, even when she didn't have, say, a vestigial hand growing out of one elbow on that particular day, to take one past example. Overflowing life force tended to find its home in no end of regenerative mutations. Her veined eyes and the bags under them testified to no end of sleep deprivation, even if that no longer affected her health. Not much did. It was still easier than passing without notice outside, at least.

Not having to wear a cloak to cover all the partial and broken weapons sticking out of her was, after all, something of an improvement. She settles down on a bench along the way and opens up her lunchbox – something of a misnomer with how rarely she used it to store food these days. Instead, she picks out three grief seeds, grimacing slightly as she looks them over. It was inevitable, of course, with the sheer amount of magic she expended just existing. The details were beyond her, but Harumi had suggested that it was unwise for anyone in this profession to go without grief seeds for long if they spent as much power as she did.

Now, if only she could use them normally. Still, beggars couldn't be choosers. She swallows one after the other, wincing slightly at the sharp sting. Why did they have to be so sharply pointed? At least it would dissolve quickly enough. Funny; somehow, swallowing a tiny sphere with a spike on the end made her more uncomfortable than slitting her own throat. Maybe she could look into another way, one of these days, to get through her dosages.

The Venenum's office lay ahead. They had belonged to the same officio for a while, but not had a great deal of time to speak before, and now she had an outright request to enter the laboratory. Curious and, given that she had largely supplanted the work any healer might have at the Third, more than a little awkward. It might have been strange to feel a sort of faint guilt over treating the wounded, but then, there was so much in this life that made little sense.

The door was plain enough, wooden and adorned with a brass plate: Penelope Baines, Venenum. A scratch reaches across the name, and under it, an addition in black marker, in the sort of handwriting that spoke of the highest levels of medical enlightenment: 'Penny Dreadful'. She'd heard the title before, certainly; that it was at the Venenum's insistence was news to her.

The woman was a knight, she was certain of it; all the more reason to look forward to this meeting. The profession was, to her faint embarrassment, among her long-standing fascinations. One of the Knights Hospitaller, perhaps. Those still existed, didn't they? She was almost certain she had read something to that effect before. Of course, some would tell her Britain was no longer a land of knights – that she was pinning some entirely unreasonable hopes on one of the Third's few foreign members – but the existence of the Second made her point for her well enough, or so she liked to think.

It only left the question, really, of why she was being brought here, but that question would be answered soon enough. She brushes a little strand of blue out of her eyes, and knocks on the door.

[3/9]
>>
>>35895536

She missed the cauldrons, she really did. It had to be vats, lately. Sanitary reasons, they had said, as well as ensuring consistent results. Well, maybe that was for the best; the less they tried to look like witches, the better. The cat stayed, though, for as long as it could keep itself out of an accident. A bedraggled half-stray tabby that spent most of its time bumping into equipment or table legs head-first, and occasionally biting her leg.

As cats went, Rags was not an especially good one, but this one was hers. At least, the cat seemed to think so, and she was in no hurry to correct it.

Now, sprayer in working order, vats bubbling – she had always set the spare ones to bubble, just for the look of the thing – and the remainder of the chemical stocks were churning in a way that vaguely implied progress. Fooling around with schematics would have to wait a little longer, but that was alright, she had enough to occupy herself with.

She would need names, too. They didn't have names yet for half of her concoctions, and as much as the implications from that pleased her, it was all a little inconvenient. Except for the barrel of warm, thick yellowish liquid behind her, of course. Everyone recognised custard just fine, even if she didn't let most of them dip into her personal supply. What if she went sharing it around and needed a fresh batch for herself in some sort of emergency? What then?

She would be able to imagine just that sort of emergency some day, she was sure of it. Everyone had their vices, and this was hers. Well, this and unspeakably noxious chemicals.

[4/9]
>>
>>35895548

The Venenum climbs up a ladder, cracking open a tall container of some roiling acid and scooping up a cup of it. The cup would hold for a while, at least; meanwhile, she leans in to take a long sniff of the gasses that stung her eyes and burned her skin. Nothing she could ever get away with as an ordinary human, as she would happily admit, but she enjoyed the smell, and a little burning never killed anyone. ...Not anyone like her, at least. Just one of the job's little perks.

Transforming on her way – might as well make the right sort of impression – she goes to answer the knock at the door, right on time, swinging the door wide open with such speed that it slams into the wall, before greeting the newcomer with open eyes and an ear-to-ear smile.

“Yer richt on time! Come in, come in! Welcome to tha lair o' Penny Dreadful!” She leaned in to add a little conspiratorial whisper, as if sharing her greatest secret with the recently arrived Eversor. “M.D., o'course.”

“Er... good afternoon, Miss Baines”, came the answer, the guest lumbering into the laboratory with all the nervous caution of a frightened mouse, trying her best not to knock anything over. A guffaw from Penelope is the only answer she receives for this.

“Aye, aye, guid affie an' whitnot. Nae need ta be so stiff, Izzy. Didna think ye'd be sae quick! Most keep me waitin' for yonks, jes' dinna ken how to hurry! Real treat, it is.” While the Venenum was hardly imposing – slightly rounded and strutting about her laboratory in a sweater and jeans, with a mop of orange hair – she certainly made every effort to intimidate. She wore a bright red, chemical-spattered coat and a black hat more at place on a highwayman, like a tricorne that woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Her pockets practically overflowed with rusted, blood-encrusted scissors and scalpels, while a bulky tool belt held no end of vials, as well as a pair of wickedly sharp claws.

Then there was the grin, right under a pair of uncannily bright green eyes; Izuho, at least, was rather certain that it would have made a shark uncomfortable.

“M.D.? So you're-” she asked, before being cut off. 'Penny' seemed inordinately pleased by the question, as if she had been waiting for it.

“Mean an' devious”, she answers with a little cackle. “Dead chuffed tae meit ye.”

Peeling her eyes away from the gallery of toxins and acids around her, not to mention its caretaker, Izuho forced herself to focus, though not without being a little mystified by the entire experience. Certainly, from what she had heard, the Venenum had been in Japan for some time and should be able to speak the language without difficulty, but every word was wrapped up in a nigh-impenetrable accent, and that was before she started bringing in words that could only be guessed at. It didn't quite add up, or so she liked to think.

Then again, it was getting harder to put anything past the chemist with every passing moment.

“You needed me for something, Miss- I mean, Penny? If this is about the hospital wing, then I'm sorry, but-”

“Naw, I dinna care fer havin' ta deal with doctorin'. Fykie business. Ye took a right heavy load off me back, mm? Naw need tae g'won aboot wark; ye want a tour o' th' lab?” An eager, pointy-toothed smile for the newcomer, as she gestured towards the labyrinth of nightmarish chemicals ahead.

Before she knew what she was doing, Izuho had agreed. Curiosity got the better of her.

[6/9]
>>
>>35895592

“...An' that one's th' sprayer, loaded up with a noo batch. Reckon that's it! Anythin' ta speir at me over?”

“Is it true that you came from the Second?” The chemist blinked once, twice, apparently not expecting the topic, then burst into peals of laughter. It takes a while for her to wipe her eye with a slightly seared plastic glove, calming down enough to answer.

“Naw. Sec'nd disna tak thugs, y'see? All about bluidlines an' whitnot. I got na bluidlines, jes' a wrench an' some poison.” Another of her grins as she waves a surprisingly normal wrench about, retrieving it from one of her pockets. “Willna take me, an' that's foyn. Came here instead; Mita-whatsit's a guid toun.”

“...Ah.” Well, that explained a few things. “Er... what did you need me here for, again?”

This time, Penelope was far more eager to explain than before, hefting the large, chrome-plated chemical sprayer and its pair of sloshing canisters up in her arms, giving it a meaningful tap as she looks at the Eversor.

“Gotta fresh batch of th' mean stuff right 'ere, brand noo mix! So I tole me phone, 'git th'... th' lairge one, th' melty lassie, Izzy. Naw one o' th' wee 'uns.”

“I'm not really sure how-”

“Wir project, aye? Jes' wirs.” A hurt glance meets Izuho's faintly skeptical look. “Oof, dinna lookit me like that. Nothin' daft, just hafta make guid an' sure th' whole barrae's all richt.”

“...How do I come into this?” The Eversor asks, with a faint sinking feeling.

“Bin nearly two oors by noo, mm?”

“...Ah. Thank you?”

“Ye're walcome, think naethin avvit!”

My theory is that the scale of the points and whether it's relatively 'good' or not varies enormously from person to person. We got 10000 Kyouko points but you get 1500 just for getting her a sandwich, we got like 10 Wendy points but she tends to only give out +5s for pretty significant things.

Something like that.
>>
>>35895618

The next ten minutes passed in a blur, which was perhaps for the best. When any sort of clarity returned to the world, the testing area was drenched and covered in smoke, while most of Izuho was reduced to a collection of bone and chemical burns. She couldn't help but be a little impressed despite herself, both by the effect and the sheer power of the painkillers she had received beforehand. A shame that the latter kept her from being able to walk just yet.

“Guid wark, guid wark. Hol' still, aye? Looks like I skailed some of th' ole nasty bubblies. Dinna want tae touch it. Wad keep yerself t'gether till ya can move richt again. Got somethin' for ye in a second. ...Ah! Y'need any scran, Izzie?”

The baffled look must have been taken as agreement; it did not take long for the Venenum to return with a bowl of what looked to be, of all the things she might find in a lab, custard with pieces of fruit floating in it. Presented, admittedly, with a cheery warning to avoid getting any on the currently-exposed portions of her skull.

Well, that would heal soon enough.

[8/9]
>>
>>35895645

“An' while I mynd, I've got some o' these for ye.” A small box lined with, as far as Izuho could tell, syringes. “Will nae even sting! Jes' a little tickle, real tidy!” She gave her visitor – and until a moment ago, test subject – an enthusiastic pat on the back, only to pull her partially skewered and bloody palm away. She should have noticed the exposed blade, really. Best not to mention it.

In passing, it occurs to the Eversor that she should have felt perhaps a little less grateful to receive a boxed set of lethal injections. Then again, there was no arguing the convenience of it; it was some sort of consideration, after a fashion.

“Oh! Dinna forget to bring th' greetseeds in the morn's morn, now! Gotta grind 'em up for ye, see if we can see how t'make...” She thinks for a moment, then chuckles. “I dinnae ken, some kinda sad milkshake?”

Staggering out of the office ten or twenty minutes later with – of all things – repeated thanks to Penelope despite herself, she could only wonder what she should expect of their next meeting, and if, judging by what she had heard, every Venenum was...

It takes a moment to realise that her last question had been said out loud, and then only by the laughter behind her?

“Barmy? Jes' Vennies? Hah! Maun be noo 'ere. Dinna ken much aboot th' job yet? All guid, ye'll learn.”

Trials of the Thrice-Cursed

Chapter 2-1: High Seas Slaughter

I used to work for the Ninth. Those missions were some of the most fun things I did in my life, and since that incident happened, I didn't think I'd be able to do things like that anymore. I couldn't be more glad to have been wrong.

I stood on the fore deck of the cargo ship as it closed in to the location of the ultimatum that had been sent to it, wearing a bright red kimono with golden details and ornaments. I knew there would be blood, so this was the best choice. What I didn't know however, was how. The pirates' boast had been bold, but vague, and as the vessel slowly plowed the water all I could think of was: "what were they going to do? what was their trump card?" Already I was imagining the possibilities and it made me more eager the more I waited.

Soon enough the ship came to a halt. Mist had been starting to rise slowly for the past two hours or so, but now it thickened at a suspicious speed. Some had been predicted by Silke, but this was more than there should have been - unless I was just remembering wrong of course, which was equally possible - hinting that the enemy may have hired a Callidus to conceal their approach.

It made no difference to me in the end. I didn't rely only on sight, but on all my senses, failing that I could push them even further with my combat drugs. I was tempted to ingest some Rose right there and then but I restrained myself. Taking it too early would just waste most of its duration waiting for the enemy to show up. I simply closed my eyes and focused instead: I heard the semi-regular flow of the weak waves on the hull, I smelled the cold and salt of the high seas.

It was coming.

Another engine purred in the distance, made faint by some means I could only take guesses at. The scent of smoke tickled my nose; they were coming from the same direction as the wind. I made my way to port side with a quick pace.

+What are you doing? you're leaving your position.+ a sharp pain stabbed at my mind as I heard Silke's voice as clearly as if she was right behind me even though she was supposed to be on the other end of the ship. I didn't know how to reply to that strange... telepathy, for a lack of better word, so I didn't, and her voice stabbed me once more; cold, harsh. +You better know what you're doing.+

"They're coming, kid." I simply whispered to myself. I highly doubted she could hear me, but it felt good to give justification. By now the mist had thickened so much that it was impossible to see more than a few meters ahead of yourself. If the pirates hailed the cargo ship or anything it didn't show. All I heard from our side was the calm and the waves. Most likely the human crew was left totally in the dark, else I would be hearing the frantic clanks of people running on metallic stairways and catwalks or just.. something. The smoke was close now, tickling my nose again.

Before long, something else joined the smoke and the salt. Iron, copper, sulfur. It was a smell I knew; a smell I liked. But it was not a smell that belonged here, nor a smell that belonged to mere pirates. This had gotten even more interesting. My own blood started to boil in anticipation, the wait was burning me.

And then it finally started with a loud clanking noise.

Who the fuck even use boarding ramps anymore? This isn't the 16th century.
==[2/12]
>>
It tore into the hull with massive, fang-like hooks that shook the deck while a number of chains were fired across the side, tangling the railing. Then came the howling. This was honestly not what I had expected, but I braced myself for it. The smell of brimstone became pungent, almost enough to bother me. Fortunately I didn't have much time to be annoyed.

The first hound leaped at me and I brought my left arm to guard. It bit down on my armored forearm with enough strength that if it were mere flesh it would have been chomped clean off; enough to have gone through normal armor as well. I was able to get a good look at the thing in the split second between this instant and the one where my right hand's black claws pierced the soft underflesh of its red neck and pushed until they ripped all the way through.

The creatures looked like massive hounds - or small wolves - but had no fur. They were covered in red scales from head to toe and sported claws and fangs better fit for dinosaurs. To complete the imagery, some of them bore spikes on their bony heads while other had web-like, fleshy growths of sickening green colors. All of them had eyes that knew no hunger, but only hatred for all living. And then some more.

I knew those creatures, but they didn't belong here. They didn't belong in the real world. They shouldn't be here.

That was all I had the time to think before more attacked and others spread across the deck; this would be the wrong kind of messy. The hounds were fast and nimble, more than their heavy, large frames had any right to be and even someone like myself couldn't under-estimate them. A single moment of inattention would be enough to have your body entirely picked and torn apart by those beasts.
==[3/12]
>>
My body twisted and spun, giving them their match. fangs first met claws when a gaping maw was rammed by fleshmetal, black steel impaling into soft daemon flesh and coming out coated in gray and white pulp. I tossed back the twitching husk into the fray but not quickly enough to fully avoid another maw that took a chunk out of my left arm, a bit below the shoulder, rendering it useless for a moment.

"Kch, arrogant little mutts." I jumped and landed forcefully on the most distant one, causing its legs to buckle and giving me time to sink my good claw into the back of its neck. It was more difficult with the thick protective scales, but I still had enough hold to twist and break its neck without issues. By that time the pack had already turned back and--

+T-tatsuki! w-what are those things?+ Shit.

It would just have been too convenient if they all stayed here for me to kill. Gunfire and screams started to erupt at other parts of the ship. I could hear it all clearly as I continued my work; pleas, cries for help, shrieks, last rambles of agony. I needed to finish this quickly, so I attempted to do so in the most efficient way. Baleful energies gathered, coating my good hand in ephemeral colors while my other arm was still regenerating. With another jump to dodge the dogpile of daemon-hounds I released the energy downwards in the form of several spheres of volatile, empyrean force. They detonated violently on impact, covering this area of the deck in purple flames that shifted tones with every heartbeat.

I had under-estimated those things. The explosion itself had blew away some of the further ones and caused them to fall into the ocean where they would surely drown, but the others stood insultingly unaffected by the Warpfire licking at their bodies. I moved back in without a second thoughts; fleshmetal drawing blood, daemon fangs drawing blood.

If only I could enjoy this dance of death just a little while longer, ah...

The last of the husks fell down heavily as it hit the railing with a crunching sound, bending the steel and tumbling down into the dark waters below. I knew I was right to pick red. My kimono was tattered by countless slices and tears and even my long black hair was stained crimson, but my body held nicely. It would take more than hell-spawned familiars to keep me down. I made my way to the Aft deck at full speed. I needed to hunt down the spread out creatures, but the first priority was the Culexus. She sighted them far too long ago already...

Silke was sitting down against the wall near the door leading to the bridge, breathing heavily and looking exhausted even with her helmet on. Her chest rose and fell quickly. She seemed completely out of it, but she wasn't dead yet, so that was all that really mattered.

Around the little Culexus was.... the things looked like they were shot by some sort of heavy, heat-weapon from a sci-fi movie. Entire halves of canine bodies were just gone, the remains charred with the missing parts nowhere to be found. Another was blown off the middle with 60% of its body gone and meager, charcoaled ends pathetically twisted on each side of the ashes.

Just what the fuck -are- Culexus anyway...

"Hey, don't witch out on me kid." I reached out a hand and Silke looked up slightly before weakly taking the outstretched hand. I helped her to her feet

"I.. didn't let.. any of them in.. so the bridge is safe... but I.. couldn't.. " I put a bloodied finger on her lips with a small 'shh' and stopped her. I then produced a Grief Seed from my inventory and handed it over to her. There was a short moment of silence as she applied it and her breathing stabilized for the most part. "I'm sorry.. I couldn't pinpoint the source.. I had to stay here and take care of this.."
==[5/12]
>>
"It's fine." I shook my head lightly and tried to speak in a comforting tone. Try being the keyword here. "We'd be pretty fucked if we completed the mission but didn't have the crew to bring this ship back to port."

"Do.. do you have any idea what those things were?" Silke hazarded, still clearly a bit shaken and my bloodied appearance probably not helping at all.. "They were like familiars... but we aren't in a Witch's Barrier."

I just nodded. "I felt the same too, but I have no idea how that'd be possible." I let out a small breath "We'll have to find out later, I need to finish clearing up." I turned around and tried to head off but a gloved hand stopped me.

"Wait!" Silke's voice rose above her usual shy tone and forced me to look back. "When I Pulse to you. Stop. Being. Silent." I blinked, both surprised by her sudden coldness and serious as well just genuinely lost as to what she was even talking about. "Simple. I send a message to you, you focus back on me."

+Like this+

"Ouch fuck." the message stabbed me more strongly than it did earlier. "That hurts, but fine I'll.. try to do the thing." I sighed with annoyance and rubbed the back of my head. "Yes. You do the thing. The thing is -important-" she replied flatly before letting me go.

Without wasting more time I headed back towards the center of the ship to hunt down the remaining hellspawns. It wasn't pretty. The crewmen that had been left to their own devices didn't have any chance, even those with firearms. They were all torn apart. Even those who had tried to hide had been killed, most likely sniffed out if those things had the same sense of smell their canine forms suggested.

+Alright, now let's set a plan.+ I cringed lightly, but Silke's Pulse was softer so it was bearable, so I tried to do the thing.
==[6/12]
>>
+I'm a little busy, but what have you got?+ I tried to do the thing, but I didn't know if it worked just yet. I learned soon enough when my mind was metaphorically stabbed again. This would take a lot of getting used to.

+After you finish securing the cargo, we'll board the pirates' ship.+ a small pause, hesitation? +I was supposed to do it myself earlier, but you saw what happened.+

+Sounds good to me. We'll meet up at the ramp once I'm done.+ I tried the thing again.

+Understood+ was her final answer. I was pretty thankful to be getting a break from this. Did this pain always affect other Magical Girls whenever they message them this way or was it just my body reacting strangely again? I couldn't help but also wonder why that would be if it were the case.

Strangely enough, when I reached the nearest straggler, it vanished, dispelled into some sort of fairy dust bullshit. I didn't know what happened, but it told me that for whatever reason, those things had limits to their presence. Maybe they could only be here for a limited amount of time, maybe they went too far from.... whatever hole they crawled out of. I didn't know the specifics, but it seemed that way. I scoured the whole cargo for their presence but found no more of them.

Chapter 2-2: High Seas Slaughter

I made my way to the boarding ramp and found Silke waiting for me there. Actually, she was leaning on the intact railing and looking down at the waters, avoiding to give any direct look to the charnel house that was the deck on her left. The purple flames had gone out a while ago, which was good as they would have made things even more surreal for the younger Magical Girl. I wondered just how much stuff she had seen up to now; how used she was to this kind of scenes.

"Let's get this over with." she didn't make any comments, didn't ask me any question, just went straight to business with her voice completely robbed of any tone by that strange vox-caster thing. "I'll let you go in first then take advantage of the commotion."

I nodded lightly. This was usually the Eversors' job anyway so it made perfect sense, even though I couldn't grasp what she had planned to do herself just yet. "No problem with me, this should be easy." I gave a small grin, but she didn't look away from the water.

"Don't be careless, after this we don't know what else they're capable of." she immediately scolded my casualness and my smile dropped. I walked over and put a hand on her shoulder, forcing her to look at me. I tried to keep my voice neutral and not to look angry... not too irritated at least. "I may be 'new' here, but I'm not a Green. You can kick back and relax if you want, I'll show you not to worry about me."

Silke stared at me for a few seconds and I could imagine behind that helmet of hers she might have looked pretty irritated. Again however, she didn't display any aggressivity, responding with the same flat tone. "If you insist. I'll leave you some space." I couldn't help but feel like I offended her somehow, but that tended to be a thing I often did without meaning to.
==[8/12]
>>
That wasn't something I had time to mind at the moment though. Whoever was leading those so-called "pirates" was probably a bit stunned their initial attack didn't succeed, but even if they were they wouldn't stay that way forever. For all I knew they were already preparing a Plan B right this moment. I didn't wait any longer and decided to step up the game. The scent of sulfur and iron rose again suddenly, but this time it wasn't a surprise.

It was my doing.

Empyrean energies surged through my body, pushing its speed and my reaction times even further than Eversor training already had. In a heartbeat's time I was already gone, having crossed to the other side of the ramp and onto the other ship. It was a very peculiar feeling, but most of all it was an addictive one. How could I say... It was a little like the feeling of speed and freedom some people got when riding motorcycles or cars really fast, mixed with the lightness that came from a good drink and with small random electric shocks keeping you on edge. That would just about begin to describe it. What awaited me on the other side of the boarding ramp though was... confusing, to say the least, and much less pleasant.

It led to some sort of large magical enclosure made by wards that projected some sort of three-walls barrier to block the way further onto the ship from their side of the ramp, but that part made sense. The part that did not make sense was how the inner side of the enclosure was even more bloodied than the cargo we were tasked to protect. There must have been enough body parts for a dozen or two of people's worth, all ripped apart in the same way that the pseudo-familiars' unfortunate victims.

>>
It was a little difficult to see with the deck as it was practically literally painted red and caked with gore, but underneath the charnel there were large inscriptions and marks, as if it was all part of some dark ritual of sorts. Great, me and religious types never worked out, even while I had my whole 'Blessed Lady' phase I really got into. Not that that's entirely over either... I guess, but I just can't stand people who can't think for themselves without deferring to some 'higher authority' to dictate everything like the bad zealot cases do.

I didn't waste too much time here either, the sigils were in too bad shape to tell me anything worthwhile. The Barriers were once again insultingly resistant to my attacks, being completely unaffected by explosive bolts, but they weren't so tall that I couldn't just jump over them. It was almost as if they were there to contain something else.

Either way, the thick mist that concealed their advance earlier turned into an advantage for me as I began my work. The lack of visibility prevented them from spotting me from a distance and prevented any would-be Vindicare - or just human snipers, those can still hurt a lot too with the right expensive toys - from tracking and lining a shot.

As I expected it was very easy to purge the deck, humans were appallingly sluggish and dull compared to hell-spawned beasts. Those who didn't freak out at my sudden appearance were rarely fast enough to even move their guns in my general direction and those who were missed by a mile. It must have been terrifying for them, to hear gunshots, screams, then silence, all in close succession and creeping ever so closer. All this while being unable to see what was even going on. Some cracked of course and tried to spray bullets in the general direction of their ex-living 'comrades', some even not -waiting- for them to be dead, backstabbing bastards, but it was futile. By the time they fired the only thing left to eat the steel was corpses.
=[10/12]
>>
Once I finished purging everything on the outer section, Silke met up with me at the back. Whoever was in command here was holing up in the superstructure and left the goons to fend for themselves. It was kinda pathetic actually, considering there was no way they didn't have some magical firepower too. But then again considering the visibility maybe they thought they had better chances inside. By now the Fel power that had strengthened me earlier was gone, its bright flame having cooled down to dying embers. All this asides though, there was something that concerned me a fair bit more.

"How did you get past the Barrier at the ramp?"

"What Barrier?"

This is wrong.

"The Wards"

"There wasn't anything like that."

No.

I kicked off the ground and landed a dozen or so meters above, onto the side of the superstructure, turning my profile towards the 'Culexus' and prepared to defend myself. If they used a Callidus to conceal their approach they could be using one -now-. I brought out my Soul Gem and kept it out of sight by blocking it with my body. The thing could use some serious cleansing, but it wasn't the time for that.

+Excuse me but.. what are you doing?+ The sharp pain in the back of my mind snapped me back from my sudden burst of Paranoia and I cringed, not so much from the pain than a little bit from shame. I sighed and brought back my Soul Gem to its other form on the back of my neck before hopping down back onto the main deck, uttering a small apology.

"No, it's fine.." The Culexus' voice sounded... almost pleased? it was hard to tell with this damned vox. "It's good to see you're more cautious than you let on." Silke moved ahead towards the steel door and gave it a small testing nudge. "It's been welded shut..."
==[11/12]
>>
I took the hint and moved closer. "Can't you use whatever it was you used on the Familiars? it seemed pretty damn powerful."

The Culexus shook her head lightly, simply giving a small "it's complicated." I raised an eyebrow but kept the questions for later. At that point I was starting to have a whole grocery list of weird shit I wanted her to explain.

I warned her to take some distance and she complied while I put the palm of one hand flat on the door and took a small breath. Once more baleful energies coated the ebon metal but this time there was no space for the energy to coalesce and it was released in one large detonation that ripped through the steel and left the sides of the gaping hole horribly twisted and mangled. I heard a small gasp behind me just before the heavy thud of the once-door several meters away.

"When we get back from this mission, we need to talk."

What the hell? That was my line.

I'm not sure how Decu'd write it, but to me she's on a different track. Rather than something like 'a real woman', she's more concerned with the idea of 'an ideal adult'.

She's likely to play up on her appearance too.

>so Kharn never knew her best friend's face!
Sometime after those kids are born we need to go visit Kharn. Tell her somebody helped us remember Malal and Walpurgisnacht.
