The best advice you've been given is to be aware that he's cunning, and to bleed him as much as possible. The density and strength of oni flesh needs a huge amount of oxygen to sustain it. Even though he's a creature of the spirit world and sustained more by Shen than by flesh, oni are by their very natures creatures of flesh, blood and body. If getting him drunk were an option you'd have pursued it.

Perhaps most important of all, is that this is the uncle of your best friend's lover, and he intends to take her back to her family in Kuroukami's heaven, where, if your seer is correct (and so far she's never been wrong) she will die. Most likely at her own hand, you suspect, because the way she was treated by her family before is going to be nothing to how they treat her after she's lived a life outside of their grasp.

Whatever the case may be, it is 11:59:47 am, and you have just delivered your third and final offer of surrender to Kurao Goto. Well, technically it's your second, but you did say he could surrender during the duel if he was so inclined. Realizing that facing off against a samurai with a wakizashi versus a tetsubo means he has all sorts of reach on you that you don't have on him.

Which is just fine by you.

Even as you dart towards him he lifts the massive club one handed, the chain rattling like the westerners ghosts are supposed to to. It moves with speed that you can barely track, but you don't need to track it – you saw where it would be going with your ruby eye long before. You freeze as it passes over your head and then you're moving again, coming up under the blow.

The chain whips at you and you slice through it with the claws of your left hand. Carving a series of the jagged links to pieces, you dart in in an attempt to slash his leg open with the wakizashi. He lifts his leg, which you were prepared for, but the sweep of the massive iron club from above is unexpected – the golden glow of its dangerous quality precedes it only an instant before you are forced to hurl yourself away from the massive oni.

You don't stop there. You launch yourself into the air, gravity a thing of another world. Whipping Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume in a tight circle you strike for the veins near his face, by he steps back and around; his arm comes up to slap you down but you bring your own arm up taking the blow hard. The impact is hideous and you just manage to right yourself midair, your feet slamming into the wall and shattering the frescoes behind the wide and long prayer strips that cover the walls. You push off once more, as he whips the massive club towards you. You slide through the air under the massive weapon and you catch it on your feet as he tries to reverse the attack. His left hand grasps the chain and he yanks it from his belt and sends it hurtling towards your waist.

Catching the chain you fling yourself around the tetsubo and wrap the chain around the club and when you land you pull back, preventing him from moving the club immediately. He's also not trying to move it either. You shift your stance slightly and nudge the sheath with your toe.

“Your skills are impressive, bitch. It has been far too kamidamned long since I have had a fucking challenge of this sort.” His respect is grudging, and you can see that he isn't trying to move the club....trying to convince you that you actually have a chance of moving the club.

On the other hand....you just might. You've gained a lot more than magical power, and you're holding the chain in your left hand....

“Meaningless words coming from someone whose most recent challenges include a teenage dragonette and a tiny half-oni girl.” There it is again, that flicker of anger, that flicker of rage that is just under the surface. Water Eyes says it's guilt, it's the pain of someone who knows he's been found out and can't lie his way out of it. “Of course I could always demonstrate what happens when you really have a challenge.”

His face contorts, and you can see that he's about to give you one of the oni's infamous Angry Looks, but before he can really get started you kick the wooden scabbard up in the air and make a swift three-hundred-and-sixty degree turn lifting your arm up and wrapping the chain about your wrist. Slamming the butt of your wakizashi against the scabbard you send a concentrated stream of water through the splintering wood, shattering it. The club is already rushing at you, but you duck, even as Goto roars in agony as the splinter-infused jet of water tracks a line of darts along his chest, tearing his robes and leaving him with some extremely painful acupuncture.

You grab onto the chain and plant your feet and pull, even as Goto tries to yank the chain back. The club freezes in place and you look away, taking a risk for a high payoff. He growls and leaps, twisting in midair to free the club from the chain....which you immediately haul on with all your might, yanking him out of mid air and hurling him bodily at the wall. You lash out with your wakizashi and and he deflects it with his tetsubo. You roll away, landing yards away, facing him as he lands feet first against the wall and stands there, looking down at you.

His robes are in disarray now, and there are trickles of blood along his pale flesh. It look like you used a nail-gun on full auto up his chest and across his neck. He drops the chain and plats the top of his club on the wall, looking up at you from the side, which is actually giving you kind of a headache. Goto sneers.

You slowly walk in a wide arc, well out of reach of his club and he glares at you, keeping expression composed. He's definitely trying to defend himself against your Water eyes – pretending the stoic, calm demeanor. You can feel his blood racing, the heat of his anger in his body through his blood. You've managed to piss him off, simply by not being a good little dragonette and getting slapped around like he did to Yui and Akari.

“Where's that fearsome Void power you were so proud of having with my subordinate? Took her out in seconds, as I recall.” Smiling sweetly, you place your hands – and sword – behind your back and cross your ankles, leaning forward at you gaze up at the monster above you. “Can't deal with someone who might be smart and powerful enough to cope with your powers. Oh....oh I see. Performance issues; those are pretty hard to deal with. Don't worry, I totally understand. There's all sorts of therapy for that nowadays. Considered Viagra?”

His face contorts, an actual honest emotion this time, not an attempt to mask his emotions from you like the Void dragonette had. He failed to do so earlier, his masks were just masks. On the other hand now he's pissed but not so much so that he can't control it.

Turning his club parallel to the wall he drops it; it slams into the floor, cracking the flagstones and standing upright. He thrusts his hands forward and spreads them, ripping the air from around your body and snuffing a few hundred candles. Staying calm and collected you put your hands together, your blade hold between them, and standing on one foot, placing the other against your calf lightly. You draw water into the Barrier, wrapping yourself in the oceanic depths and breathing lightly and easily.

“I'm absolutely positive you were expecting something of the sort,” you say through the water, your power allowing your voice to be heard. “So lets see if you can do something that actually might be dangerous, huh? You're really disappointing me here, Goto. At this rate, I should probably just end it.” You start expanding the water, growing it. He twists his hands, snarling, and the winds explode into movement around the water, sliding into it, turning the sphere of water into a hurricane of wind and water, a storm that wipes out the candles, plunging you both into the strange darkness of the Spirit World that hides nothing from your dragon's eyes.

With a gesture you give the storm a life of it's own and grin up at your enemy, who is very much flustered and unhappy now. “Oh yes....you are definitely a cut rate warrior.”

With a roar of fury the oni leaps onto a summoned cloud and rushes towards you!

“That's better! That's more like the fierce warrior who beats up little girls!” That just makes him angrier and he goes for his katana....and then there isn't a cloud under him anymore as you rip the water and wind that make up the riding-cloud and toss it into your combined storms.

Which is really freakin' uncomfortable because pretty much you're wearing a robe and that's it. All that flapping around is annoying.

He sweeps out at you with his blade and he turns it just as you meet it and turn yours, the sides of the weapons clashing together in the tumult of the storm. Lightning explodes from around the blades and tries to engulf you but it leaps around your neck as Kiku-chan's gift eats the electrical storm. You reach out as he slides past you and dart in another direction, slicing his thigh with a series of shallow cuts from your left hand. Goto twists and swats you with his blade; you block but the sheer force of the blade this time sends you sliding through the water on the floor and sends up sheets of water, and leaves your arm aching.

Lets not, that's the easy way out and a cheap shot. We can do better than that.

Lets try and make him realize that by his own actions, without ever using the word ourselves, that he could be considered a criminal or at least tip-toeing the line.

Goto deliberately pulled that blow....he's trying to make you initiate the Barrier Combat before he does. You don't know why, but despite his rage he's desperate to make sure you start it, not him. Drawing the water to you, you grasp it and hurl the entire deluge at him. “An ocean of tears for you, little Goto....” you hiss as he lashes out with a slice of his sword and half splits the wave and still gets slammed into the wall behind him.

The oni crouches, his hands gripping his katana, glaring at you with eyes that burn like coals. “I think we're done playing, little lizard....” He smirks and you can sense him about to contort his face into a mask of raw anger that will burn your flesh and freeze your spirit.

You place Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume into ~Nowhere~ and yank the winds and waters out of the whirling storm that you and Kurao Goto have created, compressing it into a tiny whirling orb held in your right hand. You can feel the terrific force whirling in the tiny orb, the force of a hurricane trapped in a space no larger than your fist.

“At first, I thought you were holding back because you had some grand plan, some cunning trickery that you were going to use on me.” He hesitates, his Angry Face put on pause as you speak. While he's soaked to the bone, his fine robes plastered to his skin, the beads of pink water trickling from his chest, the sword dripping wet and his hair a tangled mess, you are clean and dry, your white hair floating behind you and your tail slowly coiling. “And then I thought you were just playing nice, testing me to see what kind of skills I have.”

Goto slowly draws the sword up, his hands near his left ear, his legs in a wide stance, and the sword pointed directly at you, preparing for a defensive attack or a quick block. “But then I realized what your fuckin' problem really is, Kurao Goto. I thought you were a coward, and that you could only pick on younger, weaker girls. But that's not it at all, is it?”

He starts to speak but you interrupt him. “It's not that you pick on weaker girls....you only pick on weaker members of your family....like Yui. Or Nikne Kamuy. You weren't beating up my niji-chan....you were beating up on her guardian spirit. You're worse than a coward, Goto.” You hold up that whirling orb of green and white and slowly close your fist around it, drawing the power into yourself, feeling not just your shen, but his undirected, misspent energies. Filtering them through your clever mind, your perfected body, you cleanse them of his Shen and purify them into your own power.

You see him tense, see him ready to defend himself against you. “You're a bully. A bully who gets off on beating up people who can't defend themselves. I was going to make you apologize to my Yui-niji-chan and to the landlady for intruding on his home....but I'm not going to do that. I'm just going to kill and drop you in Yomi. Because you're not that fuckin' important, Goto.”

He tries to let loose with the power of his Angry Face, and the surge of his Shen is more than enough warning. You Flick the collected power at him and it explodes from your hand in a tidal waves of oceanic cold and a hundred thousand tons of water. You hear his kiai, and she the flash of his blade and his magic as he splits the water, dividing it half, along with a half-dozen votive stands and a dozen wall scrolls. But by that time your already there, your foot on the back of his blade as his mask of fury causes a dozen votive candles to explode into balls of fire and burn out instantly, more wall hangings shrivel into ash, and a number of frescoes shatter under the force of his Angry Face.

Which is directed where you USED to be.

He turns and the katana comes up but you swat it past you with your left hand, the steel singing in pain as you fall, using two of your right hand fingers to slice through the back of his robes and into his skin while still holding onto his hair. Goto leaps away from you and swings again, but you block the blade with the palm of your left hand, letting it propel you away from him and you land lightly on the other side of the temple.

Goto slowly draws his fingers along the remainder of the blade and slowly takes the most basic opening stance of the Sword Drawing Way of combat, iado. His flickering yellow eyes spark and lightning arcs between them, while his hair slowly dries and stands on end, the stump of his pony tail a bristling testament to your skills and his shame. He tightens his double-grip on the hilt and the blade shimmers fitfully in the half-light of the spirit realm.

You leap up – not at him but at the handle of his massive club where he dropped it earlier, seizing it in your left hand. Using not only the supernatural strength you possess naturally as well as the enhanced strength of you left arm, you draw upon the immeasurable forces of the tides to help you pick up and hurl the tetsubo at him, using the force of your body and power to fling it end over end at him.

Kurao Goto stands still and there is a flicker from the blade, as well as a bright ringing sound....the tetsubo falls to pieces to either side of him, his only movement a minor adjustment of his stance. Your Danger Seeing Right Eye sees it all, however: Kurao Goto didn't attack the tetsubo, the ~sword itself~ struck the weapon a hundred times. It isn't a kami – you would have noticed that immediately. Realizing something is wrong you focus your Water Eyes upon the blade....and immediately see the sword's smug satisfaction at the deception perpetrated upon you.

The sword isn't a kami – it's another ONI, transformed into a sword!

It starts off as faint giggles....then snickers....and then you burst out laughing, all the while Kurao Goto is staring at you, his lightning filled eyes and his stance never wavering. The surge of hatred and shame is more than enough to your Water Eyes. The sword is no longer so smug, either.

“Holy shit, Goto-kun, you're so terrified of me you had to bring a friend to back you up! How pathetic is THAT?”

Goto's 'tch' and the gritting of his teeth is warning enough – you can no longer afford to play games. The other oni's anger at your laughter is quite real. Unfortunately you haven't the foggiest idea of whether or not the sword-oni could use Barrier Combat against you or not.

{No, mistress, he cannot, but he can still act to defend Kurao Goto on his own.}

Matagama-no-Shitoki's words explain why he wanted you to initiate Barrier Combat – you'd be acting and he'd be reacting. But if the sword can react in his place, it would be the same as him defending AND acting on his own. Now you've placed him on the offensive, reducing his ability to defend himself from your barrier attacks. If you need to, you'll call on Hidesato to help you.

Of course, he has no idea that you've gained access to somewhat more Shen than the average dragonette....

You feel the bones sliding around your pearl and reforming....then you feely your skin harden, toughen, your claws extending and your canine teeth, upper and lower both extending. Your eyes blaze with power and you float up several feet in the air and your hair and tail lashes slowly in the dead air of the shattered temple.

“Clan Kurao has hurt my beloved Yui so badly that she wanted to die, rather than return to you. I'm going to make sure she never has to face that choice again even....no, ESPECIALLY if it means laying waste to Clan Kurao, starting with you two....”
