In the world of Valaer, the Battle of Tirinia changed everything. That was 680 years ago.

Here lies the human Kingdom of Therindel - less a Kingdom than a confederacy of lordships, duchies, principalities, city-states, et cetera - banded together under the constant threat of attack from the mysterious Wood Elves of the eastern land of Xalfacia. For many centuries, these lords and rulers have bickered amongst each other for the right to succeed the King who fell in battle at Tirinia against the Elves.

Until ten years ago however, when Lord Leandros Lysandros Layton Lamarr the Fiftieth declared his capital city open to all lords and masters for trade, commerce, and alliance. This city within this divided kingdom is the High City of Imperial City! This is the city of adventure, where Adventurers gather to duel, to brag of their accomplishments, and receive missions from the needy and the poor! This is the city where Heroes and Legends are made!

You are not one of those people.

You are Kasimir Kanenas. A few years ago you came to the High City of Imperial City for opportunity and work, only to find yourself in the deep straits of poverty. There is one good way of making money however, and that is exploiting the naivety of adventurers and their belief in the importance of all things. It’s a meagre living, but it’s a living for you, as a poor trader in these hard times.
>>
>>36122864
The clattering and stomping of horse hooves against the stone streets is nothing compared to the cheers and the yells of the crowd standing alongside the street, making their bets and cheering for their favorite adventurer. You, Miss Eckhardt, Rusky, and Stiina stand in the street, watching and observing along with other marketeers before the Joust reopens. Miss Eckhardt herself doesn’t look very interested, unlike you and Stiina.

Heck, you got thirty silver down on this.

What you were watching now was a street Joust. There was only a rope to indicate the barrier between horses, different equipment and horses between adventurers, and a street for them to bear lances against one other. Of course this was all before the actual Joust between the nobles themselves of course.

The first adventurer, a hefty man wearing a huge iron breastplate and leather armor underneath rears his horse, heaving his lance into the air. The crowd goes wild, the women especially throwing their garters and their hats to him. You didn’t know his name, but you did know him as the Big One.

The other adventurer does not have the luxury of a breastplate, only a small shield. What he lacks in protection, he can make up for in accuracy without a cumbersome shield to stop his aim or a breastplate to lock his arms. You knew not his name either, but you knew him as the Underdog.

Stiina leans in towards you, whispering. “Which one were you betting on winning again?”

You cross your arms. “The underdog there.” You point to him as he sits upon his dark little courser, accompanied by his companion, a tan-skinned woman. “He’s got spunk and I like it. And he better win otherwise that’s 30 silver down the drain.”

Miss Eckhardt nods. “Good thing you don’t have a gambling addiction.”

Oh, it could be far worse than a gambling addiction.

Satchel, standing in the front alongside with Herringbone, laughs. “I told you you’re making a big mistake, that boy couldn’t hold a lance if it was his second hand!” Herringbone simply shrugs, watching eagerly for contact.

The judge throws down the towel, signaling the charge. The two charge at each other, bringing their lances down. Stiina holds onto your arm, eagerly, waiting for it to come to blows. Miss Eckhardt as well glances up, apparently interested now. Rusky howls, jumping up and down trying to get a view of the action.

They close in at full gallop. No facial protection, not even chest protection for the underdog. Just raw spirit and determination!

And finally, contact is made.

The Underdog flips off his horse, end over end, splinters of wood showering over him. The Big One cheers, throwing down his broken Lance and throwing his arms in the air as the crowd cheers him on. “Yes, yes! Ahahaha!”

“Whooo!” Stiina claps, running over to the Big One.

Ah.

Damn it.

Satchel grins smugly, holding out his hand. “Well…?”

I don't think that's the case. I think GermanSchteel just wants to tell the story about the Magic Shop universe from a lot of differing points of view rather than just from one type of person.
>>
>>36123549
Maybe. This is the first one of his quests I've played. I didn't know it was part of an existing universe.
>>
> “Fine. You got lucky, Satchel.”

You place the sack of coins into his grubby little greedy hands that filthy dwarf. “There, you got lucky, Satchel. It’s going to run out one day,” you say.

He chuckles, tossing it into his own personal inventory rift. “I tell you what, so is yours, Kanenas. You and these pretty little girls, and your shop of yours? It’s all going to run out one day,” he says. “Just saying, you better prepared to fish for gold in the Dustbowl like the humans of old.” Ah yes, the Dustbowl. It took nearly a century to cultivate all the farmlands lost during the Great Winter. Humanity nearly went extinct then.

“Sure,” you say. You gently punch him on the shoulder, letting him wander back to his stand at the Jousting Grounds. You walk over to Stiina, as she exchanges words with the Big One.

“… now jousting, it’s a noble sport, an adventurous sport fraught with risks and all that,” says the Big One as he looks down on Stiina from his horse. He smiles warmly, being a bit more sociable than you thought he’d be. “Miss, are you going to be partaking in the Joust?”

Stiina smiles. “Well, I’d love to, but I don’t have a horse.”

And as if on-cue, the Underdog walks up to the two, walking his horse on a bridle. “As is custom.” He limps a bit, holding his chest. He sets the bridle into the hands of the Big One. “Very good contact. Damn near killed me.”

The Big One nods, handing the bridle off to Stiina. “Next time, be better prepared. If I had hit you in the head or if you landed the wrong way, things could’ve been much worse. ” He looks down at Stiina. “And as for you, Miss, some up and coming nobles like myself will be partaking in the Joust alongside the likes of the Princess herself and even Lord Lamarr. Guy by the name of Sir Schwarz as well is coming in, scary guy, seems familiar.” He gives Stiina a thumbs up. “Sign up’s at the grounds, hopefully I’ll see you.” He spurs his horse on, happily walking along with his companions to the grounds.

Stiina happily looks at the horse, grinning.

> “So you’re gonna joust, huh?”

You cross your arms. “So you’re jousting?”

She smiles at you and Miss Eckhardt. “Oooh, maybe. I mean…” She shrugs. Then after a minute of awkwardly staring at you both, she then says, “Yeah, totally.”

“Well, you’re lucky the Black Baron isn’t around,” says Miss Eckhardt. “Otherwise you’d never walk out of the Jousting ring alive.” She’s blunt, but that’s otherwise completely true.

“Speaking of walking out of the Jousting ring alive,” you say. “Stiina, you realize how dangerous the sport is? You’re a City Guard, you don’t even have a breastplate.”

Stiina waves you off. “They give us shields and lances. It’ll be fine!” She quickly hops onto the horse, and it whines, hopping up a bit and nearly sending Stiina off. “Whoa! Okay!” She hugs the horse’s neck. “Now, admittedly, I haven’t ridden a horse since I was a child but I should be able to hold myself at a simple gallop. That’s what stirrups are for.”

You sigh. “Just be careful, Stiina. I don’t want to see you get lamed out there.” She smiles warmly on you. “That would cost me money.” She drops her smile, glaring at you. “I’m just saying.”

“Right.” She giggles a bit, snapping the reins and sending the horse forward to the Grounds.

Miss Eckhardt looks to you, crossing her arms. “The Joust doesn’t start for another few hours. Anything you want to do?”

You drop fourty silver to the man at the food stand then bring over your plates of food to the little table amongst others to Miss Eckhardt and Rusky. The grounds aren’t open just yet which means there are scarce few people here, other than the merchants getting ready to peddle their wears like you and the cooks getting all the food prepared.

Still, twenty silver for a full meal? At least Miss Eckhardt paid for it otherwise you’d never eat anything here, you’d rather starve.

But then again, strudel with cream, a cup of ale, a few cubes of cheese, and even a pork rib. Excellent! You haven’t had anything so filling. And it’s probably why Miss Eckhardt is looking at you as if you were slaughtering a baby that you’re eating so fast. You look up at her, confused. “What?”

Miss Eckhardt sighs. “You could at least use your utensils.”

You look to the side. Knife and fork, right. You take both, then start eating slightly more slowly. “Riiight… so Miss Eckhardt. You never really gave me a real answer about what you wanted to do.”

Miss Eckhardt shrugs, handing the pork rib off to Rusky, who happily chews it as he lies down next to her. “As much as I trust you, Mister Kanenas, and I have trusted much to you.” Oh yes, very much. “I’m not entirely sure about it.”

You nod. “You still don’t want to leave the High City?”

“I grew up here,” she says. “Like I said, the adventuring life isn’t for me. I’d like to live my days here, and if invasion comes and tries to force me out, I’ll just sit at my doorstep and let it happen, come what may.”

You nod. “I’ll respect that, Miss Eckhardt. You’ll at least stick to your principles.” You take a sip of ale. You sigh, if you are going to shove off and leave the High City, you will miss Miss Eckhardt. Those lovely legs of hers, that firm rear, her cute little squeaks when- No, no, that’s your business, no one else’s.

Still however, now you are kind of worried for Stiina. Hopefully she gets some easy targets in during the Joust.

You finally finish off your breakfast, licking at the rest of it as it lies on your fingertips. “That’s good, very good.” You look around, then blink. Hm, is that… “Um, Miss Eckhardt.” She looks up then looks to where you’re pointing.

Down on a bench at a table lies a very worn out Vogelvolk, a very familiar Vogelvolk. A torn up and tattered looking blanket lies over him, and his bags have all spilled out, revealing jars, bottles, and metal parts. Is he dead?

A janitor walks by. “He ain’t dead. He just showed up here last night, we couldn’t make him leave, so we just left him there,” he says.

Ah. Aloysious.

You and Miss Eckhardt walk over to him. You gently place your hand on his feathers, then nudge him a bit. “Oi, Aloysious. Are you awake?” He grumbles, fluttering his wings rapidly before settling down. “Aloysious, it’s me, Kanenas. You remember me?”

He turns over, intent on warding you off. But he immediately falls down on the ground, and starts flailing his wings and his legs, screaming and squawking. You and Miss Eckhardt back off. “Agh! Kut, kut, kut!” he yells in his native dialect. “Flikker op, sunava bitch!”

Well, that’s one way to greet you.

He turns over again, writing himself. He grabs his head, groaning. “What- what do you want!?”

“It’s me, Kanenas.” You motion to Miss Eckhardt, who simply hides behind you as a human shield. “And this is Miss Eckhardt. Remember us?”

“Eh?” He squints his eyes at you two, standing up straight and proceeding to tower over you all by over a foot. “Ooooh…” He looks inebriated, plastered like a statue. “I remember you, sort of. You’re the chap I sold my Schietgeweer to.” You clambers back onto the bench, then slams his head on the table. “Go away.”

You cross your arms. “What’s wrong?”

He flicks his wing at you, and you flinch backward in surprise. “Isn’t it obvious!? Nobody will take my design!” He throws his bag at you, revealing messes of torn up papers, revealing sketches and concepts. “All of it is worthless, worthless!” He cries, sobbing on the table.

The janitor walks over. “Hey, birdbrain. You’re going to be much longer? Joust is going to start in a bit.”

You sit down next to Aloysious. “There, there…” You pat him on the back as he sobs. “Come on, it’s not all bad. I mean, you have yourself a fine weapon, it’s just far too ahead of its time perhaps.” You snap your finger. “Tell you what, I happen to know the Princess, perhaps-“

“Forget it!” he shouts. “I tried to implore her of the idea last night!” He slams his wing on the table. “And all we did was have sex!”

“Yeah-“ You blink. What? “You… nevermind.” You suppose they don’t call her the promiscuous for nothing. “Look, Aloysious. You shouldn’t beat yourself up like this. Maybe you just need better marketing.”

“I suppose,” he says. He stands up. “You know what, forget it, Mister Kaneas.” He hops onto the table, his talons digging into the wood construction. “From here on out! I will travel, and I will show the worth of the Schietgeweer by any means necessary! It will be done!” He flicks his wing at you in a point. “Mister Kanenas, Miss Eckhardt, you two will be credited as my co-inventors for supporting me! But now I must go!” He flies off, taking his designs and his bags with him.

You sigh. You were hoping you could sell more of those useless things.

The stall at the Jousting Grounds is much neater, much more sturdier, so much more sturdier that Miss Eckhardt can sit on the counter as people start coming out for the Joust. Your stall is on a platform behind the seating area for the people coming to watch, allowing you a good view of the ring while you sell items and the like. With all these books Miss Eckhardt has and all these knick-knacks you have secured, things should be relatively good.

The trumpets sound off, signaling the approach of all the competitors. You see Stiina on her horse, wearing a borrowed helmet and a borrowed rusty breastplate as she rides along with all of them. The crowd starts cheering on and on, waving garters, flags, and handkerchiefs to the many.

You’re not even worried that all of the other competitors look more well-equipped than she does, if anything she stands out.

They trot onto the field, facing Lord Lamarr at his own little viewing station. They raise their lances in salute. And then the crowd quietens down.

Lord Lamarr stands up, smiling upon everyone. “Ladies and gentlemen, of the High City of Imperial City! Welcome to this year’s King’s Day Joust! Before us stand the brave, the proud, those who would venture forth from their homes to face the unknown, and for that we thank them for their service to King and Country! All of them! So dine well, eat your fill, and enjoy the festivities! Happy King’s Day!” The crowd cheers.

Miss Eckhardt smiles. “We’re about to sing the anthem.” You roll your eyes. “Ah, come on. I know you’re a foreigner, but any good man knows the anthem.”

You cross your arms. “Don’t test me, Miss Eckhardt. I’ll pass every time.” The trumpets begin sounding. And with that follows the singing of thousands. From the old, to the young, to the men to the women, to the soldiers to the merchants and the adventurers. All people of Therindel, divided but united under a single flag. Their song echoes through the plains, through the mountains, and over the hills and far away, unlike the Elves who tried to silence it.

We will rally from the hillside, we’ll gather from the plains
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
We will fight them round the bend and we’ll fight them on the main
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

The kingdom forever, we’ll never let it down!
Down with the Elven, and up with the crown!
While we’ll rally round his flag, boys, rally once again!
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

We are springing to the cause as he came to from before
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
And we’ll fill the vacant ranks with a million freemen more
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

The kingdom forever, we’ll never let it down!
Down with the Elven, and up with the crown!
While we’ll rally round his flag, boys, rally once again!
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

The crowd cheers, happily shouting and throwing up their caps, stomping their feet, and singing more verses to the anthem. The Joust will begin now! Miss Eckhardt happily claps, being one of the louder singers to it. Rusky howls, sitting in front of the stall, his head up high as he howls. “Glorious!” yells Miss Eckhardt. “Most glorious!”

“Come one, come all! We’ve got wares of all kind here!” You pick up one of Miss Eckhardt’s books. “Here we’ve got books from the ancient times! From the times of elves and the King himself!” You pick up a bowl, just a simple clay bowl you found lying on the street. “And an elven war disk, used to slaughter countless thousands of humans! What will you pay for this!? I’d pay fifty silver which is the actual price!”

Unfortunately, not many people really go for anything. A few hours pass by with no biters. You have to assume this is mostly because of the Joust. Nobody is interested in books or a bowl. They’re interested in the prospect of watching someone possibly get killed. You sigh, uncivilized it is.

“Ooh, lala~!” You blink. Could it be? Miss Sloane Selachi, crossing her arms and smiling at you. “If it isn’t Kasimir Kanenas at the Joust. I thought you wouldn’t be able to afford to sell at the Joust this year.”

You shrug. “I raised the money. You going to buy something?”

She scratches her chin, looking over Miss Eckhardt’s wares. Miss Eckhardt happily pulls up a book for her. “We’ve got lots of different genres and other topics for you to read! All within an affordable price.”

“Hmm…” Sloane looks at you. “What do you think, Kasimir?”

“You know me, I’m a scholar. They’re good, Sloane, so you should at least buy one or two.”

Sloane smiles happily, picking up a book and looking it over. She flips through the pages. “Ew, Old Standard.” Miss Eckhardt visibly deflates at that. “Hm… you got anything in Modern?”

Miss Eckhardt nods, holding up a book, a very huge book. “We have the Orevango Trilogy. Fifty silver.” Sloane happily sets down the silver for it, taking it and quickly tossing it into her inventory rift without much of a thought. “Thank you!” Instantly, Miss Eckhardt is lot happier now.

Sloane nods. “Yeah, yeah.” She looks to you. “Hey, Kasimir, since your mother made that dent into your debt, I was wondering.” You quirk your brow. “You know, once you pay it off. Do you know what you’re going to do?”

You sigh. “It’s not going to be anything with you, Sloane. I’m sorry.” She frowns at that, grunting. “I don’t know what I’ll do when it’s paid off. You should get a move on, alright?”

She nods. “Yeah, see you round.” She walks off, her hips swaying as she goes to watch the Joust.

Miss Eckhardt says, “A bit frigid, don’t you think?”

“Loan sharks, I just can’t get into it,” you say. You hear the explosion of a shattering lance and the cheer of the crowd.

The announcer yells, “Sir Seversky Schwarz has unhorsed Jerome Jericho! Sir Schwarz advances! His next opponent, Princess Patricia Parisia Perrinius Prometheus the Prmoiscuous!”

“Hey!” The Princess leans on your counter, chewing on an apple happily, not even bothering with a breastplate of her own. You could probably figure that out though, she’d need at least two for those puppies. “Looks like I’m up next!” She smiles at you, and Miss Eckhardt looks at you a bit enviously. “So, Kasimir, gonna dump this spot, see me wipe the little smarmy bastard off the field?”

She looks around, to see a few people scanning and browsing the wares of some bored looking merchants. “For what? Kingdom come?” You shrug at that. “Ah, whatever. Tell you what though, I saw that Stiina girl who wanted to join my Free Company.”

You nod. “Yeah? How is she?”

She shrugs. “I must admit, she seems a bit too eager. I’d rather have more experienced adventurers than City Guard veterans. Though, maybe her performance in the Joust might change my mind.” She pats your cheek. “Welp, see you. Maybe when I win, I’ll invite you up to my room, we can have a victory shag with my favorite succubus pets.” She waves bye to you, then looks over to Miss Eckhardt. “You can come along too, It’s been a while since I’ve had girls as cute as you.”

Miss Eckhardt blinks, blushing a little. “Um… okay my lady.”

You shrug. “I don’t know yet. We’ll have to wait and see.” You start numbering thins off on your fingers. “First I got to settle my debts, then I have to make sure things are good back here in terms of money. You know?” She shrugs at that. “I just don’t know.”

Miss Eckhardt nods. “Well, we should hope Stiina makes it through okay, right?” You nod. Of course you should hope. Heck, you’d be up there jousting for her if you could. You sit down in a chair, sighing. “Right. Let’s just get back to peddling our wares. Alright?”

“Okay, Mister Kanenas.” She sits down next to you, crossing her arms. “Hopefully, we get a lot of customers today!”

Lunch rolls by. Only two or three people come by to buy something. Some poor idiot actually fell for the Elven War Disk trick, and he actually overpaid you with one hundred silver for it. Idiot. But still, you only made three hundred silver, at least you did. Miss Eckhardt only made the silver she made off of Sloane. Seems people don’t buy books at a Joust.

You did hear Stiina make her second victory against another adventurer though, which was nice. And indeed, she walks up to your counter, happy and giddy, covered in wooden shrapnel. “This is amazing! I can’t wait to see who my next opponent is! I’ll ride them down like grass!”

You nod, smiling back. “Save it, Stiina. Next match is the Princess and Sir Schwartz. Whoever wins, you’ll fight.”

“Besides,” says Miss Eckhardt. “Overconfidence and hubris can be your weakness, you shouldn’t let your guard down.”

She waves you both off, hissing air from her mouth. “Pssh. You two are a bunch of defeatists.”

You nod. “Fine, fine.” You look down at Rusky. “Rusky, hold down the fort.” You place a be back sign as Rusky dutifully sits by your stall, wagging his tail and glaring down people who pass on by. With that, you and Miss Eckhardt follow Stiina down to the ring.

-

-

The fence by the sidelines is reserved for competitors waiting their turn. They feed their horses, make sure their lances are weighted right, have their companions keep their armor together, everything. Stiina just sort of sits around with her horse, sipping on a cup of hot chocolate. Miss Eckhardt looks around, “Wow, the Grounds are so big.”

“Of course,” you say. “Jousting is one of the biggest sports in Therindel. Dangerous but entertaining.”

“That’s right!” Stiina sits up a bit, pointing over to the Princess, who is busy waiting at her starting position. You can see one of Companion Cavalry ride up to her, and start whispering in her ear. “And I figure if I can get the Princess’ favor, I’m a shoe-in for a good position in her Free Company!”

You nod, crossing your arms. “Yep, and I figure that…” You squint as the Princess frowns, uncharacteristically. She sighs, then nods, patting the cavalryman on his shoulder. She turns her horse away from the ring and starts riding off. “… is she withdrawing?”

Just to confirm it, an attendant brings her flag down from the post. The announcer shouts, “Princess Patricia Parisia Perrinius Prometheus the Promiscuous withdraws!” The crowd groans in defeat, muttering about how they got ripped off and how she should’ve kept on. “Sir Schwarz’s next opponent will be Staff Sergeant Stiina Stelara Strafniki of the City Guard!”

Something’s not right. Stiina and Miss Eckhardt look at her competition, a very simple looking man, with grey streaks in his black hair, and scars below the chin barely visible by his black armor, Sir Schwarz. “I’ll go see what’s up,” says Miss Eckhardt. She quickly runs over to one of his attendants.

Stiina narrows her eyes. “Why do you think she withdrew?”

You shrug. “Could be anything.”

Miss Eckhardt starts pushing a willing attendant up to you all. She shoves him forward. “Tell them!”

The attendant says, “It’s just a Joust, I don’t understand-“

“Tell them!” she says. You can see Sir Schwarz look at you all, concernedly.

The attendant sighs. “Introducing my Lord and Master…” He motions to Sir Schwarz.

Stiina goes pale at that. You step back as well, flinching. All the competitors halt their doings, looking over to the Black Baron himself. One immediately hops over the fence and starts running away, and a few others immediately follow him.

You quickly walk to Stiina’s front. “Now, listen, Stiina. I know you’re an adult, and I know you can make your own decisions. But you have to realize this is a terrible idea, correct? This man has conquered nations, razed them to the ground, wrestled with the mountain giants, and is quite possibly the closest thing Therindel has to a living King. You can’t hope to defeat him.”

Stiina pushes you aside, glaring at you. She looks to the attendant. “Look, I’m ready to fight him.”

Miss Eckhardt steps up. “Stiina please, you have to withdraw.”

You all pause, and go quiet as the Black Baron himself trots up to you all. “Is everything okay?” he says in his grizzly voice. “Are you ready to joust, Miss Strafniki?” You feel the blood in you go cold at the sound of his voice. You are standing in the presence of one of the most feared men in Therindel. “I hope you will not withdraw just because of my reputation.” He smirks, chuckling a bit. “Maybe you’ll unhorse me, hehehe.”

Stiina smiles, obviously forced. “Ah, yeah, hehe. Of course, my Lord, I will be ready to joust in just a minute.”

“Very good.” One of his Companion Cavalry hands him a lance, and with that the Baron slips on his helmet and goes back to his position. The crowd is quiet, whispering and muttering.

Stiina climbs on, grabbing a lance. “Right, let’s go.” You grab the reins. “Kasimir, let go.” You still hold her reins. “The horse, Kasimir. I’m going whether you like it or not.”

“He’ll kill you,” you say.

“Then let him kill me,” she says furiously. “… if I can’t be a woman, I’ll at least be a hero. The one girl who stood up to the Baron, and probably died for it.”

You narrow your eyes. “Is this what this is about? The fact that you can’t birth children? Stiina, when he jousts, he thrusts his lance at the last moment! He’ll break you!”

Stiina leans down to you, glaring at you. “If you love me. You will let go of the reins.”

You don’t want to let go. Even if you didn’t love Stiina, even if she was just some random stranger to you, you wouldn’t have let go. You wouldn’t just let someone be killed like that. Miss Eckhardt looks at you, pleading with her eyes for you to hang onto her reins. Stiina simply glares at you, but you can see a hint of her pleading for you to let go as well.

You sigh.

You should let go. Dina would want you to let go. And that’s precisely what you do.

She canters on over to her position. Before Miss Eckhardt can yell at you, you quickly run over to the crowd, then stand up on the fence. “People of the High City of Imperial City! Staff Sergeant Stiina Stelara Strafniki is one of our most beloved City Guardswomen! She needs your help now! She needs a breastplate, a breastplate and a helmet! Will you be the one to hand her the armor that defeats the might of the Black Baron himself?”

The crowd talks and converses with one another. You don’t expect someone to just randomly start making armor in the middle of the crowd. It’s time consuming work! Nor do you expect someone to just give you a-

“Here you go!” You look down to see Satchel, with a fresh iron breastplate and a fully enclosed helmet. “On the house, just for Miss Strafniki.”

You take it, smiling. “Thank you, Satchel.” You hop down, nodding to him. You quickly run over to Stiina, who looks at you, confusedly, but then she sees the armor you have. She starts stripping out of her old rusty breastplate. You throw her the new one, and she quickly sets it on properly. You hand her the helmet as well. “Good luck, okay?”

[1/2]
>>
>>36129670
[2/2]

She smiles, then places her helmet on, obscuring her face. “I don’t need luck. It’s King’s Day.” You nod, then move to the fence to observe.

You sit down with Miss Eckhardt, who watches wordlessly, breathlessly. You cross your arms.

For the love of the King, Stiina, please live.

The flag is dropped. Both launch from their positions at each other, their lances brought low to meet each other. The crowd cheers Stiina’s name, pumping their fists. As they get closer, the chanting gets louder, and louder.

Then contact is made.

Time just seems to stop right then and there. You see Stiina’s lance glance off the side of the Baron’s breastplate, not even scratching the iron. The Baron’s own lance though meets it mark, right at Stiina’s head. He’s got an accurate thrust, and when the lance explodes, you almost see how Stiina’s neck just snaps.

And finally, when they pass, she simply slumps over and falls out of the saddle. The crowd is quiet. Miss Eckhardt covers his mouth, in shock. All the competitors are silent, some mourning, one even crying terribly. You can see the nobles on the other side look on, grimly.

Everything just seemed to stop.

You sit on the steps leading into the grounds. The Joust so far is wrapping up, and the cheer and livelihood is back again. Stiina’s death has been quickly forgotten thanks to the bread and the circuses of Lord Lamarr’s celebrations. It is King’s Day after all. You should be celebrating.

And yet, you are not.

You don’t remember much of what happened immediately after her death. You remember cradling her body when she died. The Black Baron apologizing as if all he did was break a vase. Miss Eckhardt was nigh-inconsolable.

And that was that. Somehow, you ended up here underneath the snowfall. People pass on by, not even giving you a second thought.

You’ve been here so long, the snow has piled up on you by inches.

Well, you let go, Dina. Look where that got you.

“Mister Kanenas.” You turn your eyes up to see Miss Eckhardt, holding a cup of hot chocolate. “Are you okay?” You nod a bit, shuffling some snow from your head. She dusts some snow from the step, then sits down next to you. “Her death is deplorable.”

You nod at that.

She blinks, then sighs, looking ahead. “I’m sorry. If you don’t want to talk, we don’t have to talk.”

> “We can talk.”

You nod. “We can talk,” you shakily. “I just don’t know what to say.”

“You tried so hard to keep her from doing it,” she says. “I’m sorry- that’s not what you want to hear um…” She brushes a bit of her hair back, biting her lip. “I don’t know what to say either.”

You cross your arms. “Stiina died doing what she thought was right. I won’t say anything about that, and I certainly won’t make light of her death.” You lean back, looking up at the stars. “But I think it has taught me something.” Miss Eckhardt turns to you, sipping on her hot chocolate, awaiting your word. “I guess the world just doesn’t like it when I’m actually successful at something. I don’t know what to do anymore.”

Miss Eckhardt grunts. “Now that’s just hogwash.” You glare at her. “Don’t give me that look, Mister Kanenas.” She presses her finger to your chest. “I know this is a time of mourning, she was killed not six hours ago. And you know what, would Stiina really want you hanging around in the dumps like this?”

“Miss Eckhardt-“

“No!” She throws down her drink, spilling it down the steps and stands up. “You can always mourn Stiina later. But you’re not going to get anywhere by letting her death destroy you.” She stomps her foot. “By the King, it’s not right! These are hard times for all of us damn it but it’s not right at all!”

You sigh.

Miss Eckhardt takes your hand. “I’m with you, Kasimir.” She grips it as hard as she can, looking you in the eye. “I’m with you. Just please, live for Stiina, don’t let her death define you.”

I want to see them go dungeon diving and exploring for a treasure or artifact, or to seek audience with a good or mystical creature who can bring her back and not barren this time

Miss Eckhardt sighs. “We have to face these things as we come.” She goes back to sitting down next to you. “We’re never going to learn how to live if we don’t learn to take these hits life gives us.”

“… that was so sad, her death. I can’t believe the Black Baron would just kill her like that!” she says. You look back to see a familiar face. It was that girl from a few weeks back, along with her Wandering Spirit companion. “It’s deplorable!”

“Deplorable indeed,” says the Cloak. “Sad way to end our stay in the High City.”

“Yes,” says the girl. She snaps her finger, smiling a bit. “But on our way to the Golden Fountain, yes?”

Miss Eckhardt blinks. “Marigold?” The girl and the cloak stop to look at her. “It’s nice to see you again.”

“Oh, Emily!” Marigold runs over and hugs her quickly. “I saw what happened back there.” She lets go, giving a very motherly concerned look to Marigold. “I hope things aren’t too bad, yeah?”

You stand up, looking at her incredulously. “You said the Golden Fountain?”

The Cloak nods, looking at you with his ghostly eyes. “That is correct.”

“You realize that’s just a myth,” you say. You shake your head, crossing your arms and looking at them like little children. “It doesn’t exist.”

The Cloak says, “Not at all.” He reaches into his torn up dark cloak, then pulls out a very wrinkled, and a very faded parchment of paper. “We found this during our journeys. It appears to detail some sort of path to the Golden Fountain itself, nestled within the Aegis Mountains to the East.”

Marigold nods. “That’s three weeks travel by horse.”

You blink. No. You nod. “And this is the same Golden Fountain that grants any wish you want provided you give up a gold coin.”

The Cloak holds up his own gold coin. “Correct.”

You pat your pocket. You pull out a gold coin, Stiina gave it to you a few days ago. You were hoping to slip it back to her after the Joust.

It's more the question of why, rather than what.

Why did German decide to pit the love interest verses a character which was known to kill people in jousting, why was such a character essentially unbeatable, why include such a person in a quest?

He hasn't exactly seem much screen time or characterisation, so the logical conclusion, considering he's appeared for this, is exactly what people are accusing GS of, no?

I think the main issue her is that since the Magic Shop/Poor Trader has been relatively lighthearted with minor consequences, nobody really took the idea that Stiina might die seriously. I can understand how people feel GS pulled the rug out from under them with this.

And I think GS really dropped the ball here, because now he's basically validated the shadowrunners' fears, and it's going to taint decisionmaking in every other quest in this setting from now on.
>>
>>36130844

You grab the Cloak by his cloak. “I’m going with you. Both of you!”

Miss Eckhardt blinks, stepping up to him. “Now, wait a minute, Kasimir.”

“Are you sure?” asks the Cloak. “This seems rather sudden, and you do not look rather fit to travel that distance,” says the Cloak.

Marigold says, “Well, we’ll be happy to take you on!” You let go of the Cloak, looking at her thankfully. She takes your hand, shaking it. “My name is Marigold Merriweather. You already know my good friend Mister Cloak and my other good friend Miss Emily Eckhardt! We’ll be glad to have you come with us.”

Miss Eckhardt sighs. “Kasimir, think about this, you said it yourself, it was a myth. You can’t…” You look at her. You need this. Just the chance. She falters, biting her lip. “K-Kasimir…”

“You don’t have to come,” you say. Miss Merriweather and the Cloak look at Miss Eckhardt, expectantly.

“Okay, I’ll go,” says Miss Eckhardt. Miss Merriweather responds with a hearty hug. “Okay, okay! I’ll go! Just this once!” She gently pushes Miss Merriweather away. “But I won’t make a mwish. Kasimir, even if we get to the fountain, even if we’re able to dip the coin in its waters… please don’t just use it on what I think you’re going to use it on. You have to be wise about this.”

You nod. “I will. I promise you that.” You pat her on the head, and she blushes intensely, furiously at that. “Miss Merriweather, I’m at your disposal.”

The Cloak nods. “Very well. We leave tomorrow.” You all begin walking down the steps, together, as a group. “Mister Kanenas, I expect much from you. I hope things are not as bad for you as they seem.”

You shrug. “These are hard times for us. Let’s just keep going as we can.”

I did not see it as light SOL either. We are a womanizing poor merchant who sleeps in a 4x4 stall in winter, and one of the chargen options was to be alcholic

Different guy here not even upset at the death, but it blatantly was. Maybe Schteel imagined it'd be about a down on his luck merchant that sifts through garbage and barely makes enough day to day to survive, but he's been way too soft from thread 1.

Sex, money, and support literally fall into the MC's lap for doing fuck anything. He gets an easy free ride every thread and dicks around with his waifus.

My ass this wasn't a SoL.
>>
>>36130957

>>36130972
Plus I wouldnt equate the level of ruse here with those two. He actually left more options here and if we weren't busy bitching and fighting we'd talk about the journey to this fountain.

And might not of, probably, put GS off of running a follow up.

So to everyone bitching about grimderp ending

Congratulations, you're the cause.
>>
>>36130992
Fuck that noise, we're going to wish to go back in time and that Stiina kills the Baron and she comes out unscathed, and then we're going to build a massive trade company with her and Emily and then we'll be raking in the piles of money.
>>
>>36130989
SOL is not restricted to cute girls doing cute things. I don't think you really understand the definition at all.

Still, killing off Stiina at the end like that just seems like very lazy writing to me. As if we needed a reason to push Kasimir into adventuring mode. Then again, I'm one of those guys who really dislikes last minute deaths for shock value.

>>
>>36131121
I said light SOL, certainly it could be sol, but if we say that what the hell are quests anyway.

I meant the light part mostly. Should have clarified.

I think GS meant for this to be more bittersweet, with hope looking towards this fountain of wishes.

Kinda blew up on him though.

Internet. Yaay.
>>
>>36131036
What >>36131113 said.

We go back, and either make Stiina win, or we resurrect her, unbarren this time, and put everything we have into building a better life for all three of us.

>>
>>36131181

>>
>>36131160
Didn't think it was light SOL*
>>
>>36131112
>ruse
There was no ruse though.
>>
>your favorite girl doesn't just lose
>she dies
This is a suffering I had yet to encounter, I'm getting hammered
>>
>>36131212
Oh, I meant that more colloquially, as in the suddenness I suppose.
>>
>>36131182

Or that she would win because of her own power. That way, the Baron gets to know that he has no chance of winning but has to go ahead with it anyway or he'll look like a big bitch.

Then we'll ask him about it afterwards.

"Hey Baron, how does it feel like to be a bitch?"
>>
>>36131212
Not a ruse, just differing expectations. Typical QM/reader disconnect. I'm sure things made sense in GS's head, but it certainly didn't translate to the readers in the way he intended.
>>
>>36131182
Well that is what I want to wish for, because just stopping her from jousting won't do all that much, she'll find a way around us or the feeling will just fester inside her.

So our choices for wishes are, we wish for us and Emily to go back in time and that Stiina win's against the Baron, and survives the joust perfectly fine, or slightly injured from a glancing blow. Or we wish her back then and there at the fountain, which I don't think would work all that well.
>>
>>36131113
If she wins she'll go be a lesbian with the princess
>>
>>36131238
>>36131231
Well I can understand that. I'm new to Quests so maybe I just didn't expect the same things you guys did.
>>
Where was it mentioned that she was barren?
>>
>>36131234
Don't leave the fucker alive.

>>36131257
Then just wish for her to be unseated but unharmed, and for her lance to end up going straight through the Baron's face.
>>
>>36131287

Second thread.
>>
>>36131234
But then he'll give the (insert inferior race here) lightning and they'll kill us all and one of them will turn into a demon spawning tree from trying to recreate the first fire and those idiots'll overrun the entire world.
>>
>>36131287
in this thread, and in the thread after we both got drunk and took her virginity
>>
>>36131291
Then she still beat the baron, dudes dead, he would kinda be disqualified, off to lesbian land for her
>>
>>36131302

Then we should wish to have the knowledge of how exactly to wish something ideal for everyone and how to convince someone else to make that exact wish for us and for them to wish it with unerring accuracy on both the letter of the wish and the spirit of the wish. In a timely manner (i.e. less than 1 minute).
>>
>>36131306
I thought the MC took Eckhardt's virginity. Hadn't he been sleeping.with Stiina for a while.
>>
>>36131355

Both are true.
>>
Wandering Spirit quest is next! I'll see you boys there.

Thanks for the amazing quest Schteel
>>
>>36131355
I'm pretty sure he took Stiina's as well as taking Emily's

>>36131324
Then how do you propose we get Stiina back safely?
>>
>>36131368
I never read Wandering Spirit, what's it about, is the MC Mister Cloak?
>>
>>36131375
Letting her lose but not die, or giving the baron super ultra bad diarrhea the day of the joust. Nigga will no show then the princess will whoop her ass and shit'll be good
>>
>>36131375
Well, actually defeating the Baron might give her a reputation that would be dangerous for her, especially since she intends to join the Free Company. It might be smart to wish that she was unharmed in her loss.
>>
>>36131391

Yes.

Though I have a feeling that the PoV won't switch back to Cloak. I think it is more likely that we may play someone else who is tangentially related to the journey that Kasimir & Co. are taking.
>>
>>36131437
>>36131456
>Letting her lose but not die
> It might be smart to wish that she was unharmed in her loss.
That sounds like the safest plan, who knows what resurrection does to a person, but if we go back in time and stop her actually dying and improve the situation then that's a good result

I say we find some kind of crystal or something to record our memories and our journey, and take that back with us and show it to Stiina when we hold her in our arms as we cry our eyes out about how happy we are she's alive after she loses
>>
>>36131554
>ever telling her
No, she can happily live thinking nothing ever happened
>>
>>36131571
Yeah, telling her sounds like a bad idea, us and Emily can keep it a secret while we make sure we spend every waking moment cherishing the both of them while we improve all our lives.
>>
>resurrection is risky
>but time travel is a-okay!
I don't know what you people are thinking, you're fucking with the fundamental order of things either way and throwing your lives at, as far as you know, a fool's errand.

The best thing to do (and surprise, what Schteel was *hinting at for the last two updates) is accept her death and move on rather then let it consume your life exactly like you're planning to do. This journey can even be a great opportunity for the MC to clear his head and find actually valuable junk to sell.

*I don't know if you can call it hinting when a character blatantly says it.
>>
omg i missed this and wtf happened, why

what about that orphan in thread 1?

this is also awesome if somehow all these random mini-quests Schteel does tie together into a megaquest.

Let go, fag. She killed herself and was a shit waifu to begin with.

Literally nothing we did mattered, GS just rode the train straight on through it all to her death.

We screamed on a box until a dwarf gave her a chest plate. Which, coincidentally, was not where she was hit.

>>
>>36133631
Anon, I voted to hold her back and not let her go, wouldn't have mattered anyway as GS seemed determined to kill her.
>>
>>36133631
How? How would we have stopped her? What would you have said or done to change her mind?
>>
>>36133657
Q: could we have saved her by holding onto the reigns?
A: sad story about his dog dying and then "Ever since that day, things have been quiet in my house. She'd always wait at the window, waiting for Mom and Dad to come home, or sleeping on the couch. But she'd always bark at people passing by, letting me know I wasn't alone in the house at least. It gave me comfort. I remember last week when I was walking with my brother, and there was another dog just like her that walked by, even sniffed and barked at me. Its owner scolded it with a whisper of, "Angel, no!" And I suppose that's what may have inspired the theme of this last thread.
Stiina's death is there because death can come for the people you love in the absolute worst ways and in the most unexpected ways as well. Part of Poor Trader Quest is learning to overcome these kinds of situations, up to and including that. Although one may disagree with how I wrote it and indeed, I don't blame you, you can feel free to criticize all you want, I don't regret writing this. Every day I wonder if I had just been fast enough to get my beloved dog to the hospital, or if I had convinced my parents earlier that something was wrong with her, maybe I could've saved her.
That's why I won't say, because life never says that either. You just gotta learn to move on from it. "
>>
>>36133548
What she needed was one of those throat to lower half of head guards like what Edward wears in A Knigt's Tale. Can't remember what it was.
>>
>>36133750
UHG, still trying to just get that neck snapping out of my head.
>>
>>36133750
Nah, that wouldn't have mattered at all because Schteel would have just ignored it and railroaded straight on through.
>>
Well put as this way anons, we are still in Stiina's debt for her giving us that gold coin, and we always ay back our debts.
>>
>>36133966
heh, I like that.
>>
>>36133966
>we always ay back our debts.
By living a good life and never forgetting her.

Mark my words, anon, wishing her back to life will not end well. Two different NPCs have warned against it.
>>
>>36134007
probably going to end with us getting to the place seeing the well, tossing the coin in and nothing happens. but we can always hope. Even if Hope is a dangerous thing. and just in case it does work we'll have Miss eckhart make a wish first for "The well to grant the spirit of the wish and minus and dick ass repercussions"
>>
>>36133427

doesn't the girl in that picture actually survive that attack?
>>
>>36134007
2? They've not warned directly against resurrecting or saving her, they've warned against us undertaking this jouney as we're constantly reminded of being a frail little twig, and that they don't think we should be trying the journey.

They've not said anything about bringing Stiina back, and after all this? Fuck that we're giving it our all short of dying for her to get her back, we're going to find the Golden Fountain, and we're going to bring her back to us safe and sound, alive and in our arms, and then we're never going to let go of her ever again.
>>
>>36134067
>Even if Hope is a dangerous thing
As Schteel found out when he said there was hope for thecaravan idea, then he shot that down and killed Stiina in a shitty railroad

>probably going to end with us getting to the place seeing the well, tossing the coin in and nothing happens
Ha, oh man if he did that, that would be a level 9 shitstorm.

I like to think he's smarter then that, though this thread alone has shaken my confidence in him, very much doubt I'll read whatever he does next live and just catch it in the archives to see how it goes before I ever give him my trust and hope again after this nightmare.
