LAST TIME, ON Pokémon: SOUTHERN SHORES QUEST….

Grey and Dani split up to be sorted into their colors, Gray and Red, respectively. Grey spotted Nick also in his color. Grey completed the first half of the Initial Examination with a record-breaking run of the Capture Test and a very solid finish for his Cunning and Intelligence Test. He will have two more tests, receive his results - and then it's off to meet the Professor to help with his research!

But for now? We switch perspectives, and join Dani for a bit….

My name is Dani 2795, and I am a clone.

“27” refers to the designation of the Housing Facility where I grew up. 95 means I was the 95th clone produced there. Despite the number of kids and caretakers there it was a bit lonely growing up, but it wasn’t too bad. I had Peter, and a couple of the caretakers were nice, like Mary.

I miss her.

But things are looking up right now!

Well, not… exactly right now. Right now it's just kinda boring. I’m currently sitting in the second of a series of waiting rooms between testing chambers. I just finished a test on my “cunning” and “intellect!” I’m sure they found that I was no Alakazam, but I think I did alright. I had to make my way across this body of water and then up a wall using a voltorb, named Amps. We built a raft together, which was a… pain in the ass, actually. But it got us across the water!

Once at the wall I used Amps’s reflect ability to make hard surfaces for us to climb up. It worked out like stairs. I was pretty proud of myself when I thought of that. I wasted a lot of time, though, trying to get this rope ladder down. And, uh... Oh yeah! The diglett was another tough obstacle because it kept burrowing away from attacks and electricity did little to it. Eventually, I used reflect again to create a surface under Amps. When the diglett tried to attack him from below it just conked itself on the see-through wall and Amps was able to get it with a Sonic Boom before it ran away. If the little round guy had arms I would have given him a high-five.

I have a couple more tests to do, but then I’ll be given my starting gear, see the ceremony… and then I’ll be meeting up with Grey again!

Holy crap, Grey. Ah man, he… he said I was cute… Crapcrapcrap he said I was cute.

I mean… I didn’t even know what to say. I had spent so much of my time getting ready to get out of the StandFah (short for standardized facility and housing) that I hadn’t really paid much attention to… well… let’s just say I was busy carving up magikarp when they handed out boyfriend lessons.

Ah, man. Pretty girls and actresses don’t carve up magikarp... He’s gonna think I’m a brute. I’ll just have to win him over with my cooking!

I don’t realize it, but as I was thinking about how I was going to win over Grey I had this stupid smile on my face and I was punching a fist into my other hand. Thankfully, though, the same voice as the last waiting room snaps me out of my tornado of immature thoughts. “The Doors are unlocking. Dani 2795, please proceed to the next testing area. The doors will now open.” Alright, two more tests to go. “Pokémon hunting and husbandry” and “Survival Skills.” Let’s do this.

>Just a couple more posts

“Greetings, Ms. Dani. In this test we will look at your ability to procure food, water, and shelter – all three of which are vital to survival while out on your tour. While an allowance will be disbursed at the closing of the initial ceremony, it is advised that you ration your money carefully. Someday, you may have to choose between buying food or items to help your training. Medicine or shelter. Success and failure. To be a successful Trainer; indeed, to succeed at life; you must make the best use of your resources at hand.”

The attendant is an old yet kindly bald man in the same lab coat all the proctors have been wearing. His smile is reassuring, and I do my best to take his words to heart. I knew that someday I would be out in the wilds, surviving on my own. I’ve done a lot to prepare.

For the first test, we will look at your ability to find food efficiently and use it wisely. Please wait on the starting circle, and a testing environment will be generated. Once the timer starts I want you to survey the virtual surroundings. Once you feel you have identified every possible source of food, please hold up your hand like so,” he holds up a four-fingered salute, palm facing me, “and the timer will stop. You will then report your findings to me.”

The testing machines, lights, and displays whirl to flashing, moving life around me. It’s still impressive every time they throw these holograms up onto the testing rooms… Aside from the red shading and see-through bits it all looks so real!

Okay, time to focus now. No more gawking. Have to focus.

Trees… bushes… rocks… ground… Is that a …stream over there? A whole forest scene builds itself around me. Okay, focus.

“Testing will begin in 3….2…”

I take a deep breath and get ready to start moving.

“..1!”

>Alright Anons, time to identify some sources of food!
>Keep in mind that using food to get other sources of food is also viable.
>Roll 1d100 in addition to suggesting what Dani should explore and look for.

Alright... well this is an intense test!

Look for tracks for pokemon If there are predator tracks that can lead to prey, which I'm assuming we can hunt?
If the tracks are of an oddish or something like that then we could just eat the oddish or something

look for berries, acorns, and plant stuff that we can use as bait. if we have bait then we could make traps out of sticks and rocks and stuff. maybe we could even make some sort of trap to catch magikarp.
>>
Rolled 89 (1d100)

>>36141166
Well, let's start by identifying edible plants and berries. We can use the berries as bait to trap ground-based Pokemon, and use meat from them or just berries again as fishing bait for Pokemon in the stream.
>>
>>36141166

I might as well take this moment of quiet to address something that I meant to address last thread...

There was an anon who expressed his dislike of the OOC info-dumps. I want to say that your complaints did not fall on deaf ears, and I will definitely try to avoid that in the future. The only reason I did so in the past was because I wanted to give you guys some important IC knowledge/background and I didn't want to slow the pacing of the story down, which is already slow.
I am doing my best to pump the updates out quicker, so I will try to meet quick pacing and updates with sufficient information. We'll see how it works out.

>>36141398

I set to a brisk jog, quickly analyzing various plants, the ground, availability of berries, tracks, the depth of the stream….

>89

There is just so much to take in. I identify beggar tick bushes, bush mint, cat tail, various wild Berries – I’m not sure how edible the cluster-y purple ones are, but no matter… and some different pokemon tracks, too. Looks like nidoran, bellsprout, maybe oddish…? And there is a lone scyther in the area. That last realization makes me particularly glad that this isn’t a real life test. Scythers are aggressive, territorial, and extremely deadly.
All in all, there is a lot of food in the area. There aren’t any nuts on these virtual trees, but I think one of them was hickory or pecan or something…? Also, acorns! There are a lot of oak trees around here. Man, surviving in southern shores won’t be too bad!

I give the attendant a hand signal and he quickly stops the timer. Then, I watch with mild wonder as the test dematerializes as I walk towards him.

“Excellent, Ms. Dani! Now, what did you find…? What would your main strategy be to find food and survive?”

>If you come up with solid trap ideas/strategies (or pictures) you don’t have to roll
>Well, I would use X food items to fish using Y trap…
>Well, I would use X food items to hunt using Y Trap…
>I would do Z about Pokémon A in the area!
>>
>>36141674

OP was a boyscout or something this shit is over my head

okay, we can use acorns and wild berries to trap magikarp. we can weave nets out of the cattail reeds or make like a basket or something that will catch the magikarp, and we can put berries inside the basket.

Or, we could make a rock-fall trap and put berries underneath it. if a rattata comes along it will be crushed by the rock after it triggers the stick thing

tell the scientist that we would move out of the area because there is such a dangerous pokemon there

and i looked it up and you can eat beggar ticks so we could make a salad with dandelions or something
>>
>>36141819

This is solid. No roll needed. I'll go ahead and take it.
>>
>>36141919

“Well, there are a lot of things I would use for food around here. The bush mint, cat tails, and beggar ticks provide edible parts. Also bellsprout roots and oddish berries are edible – and I found their tracks. For the nidoran tracks… I would most likely construct some rock-fall traps using the berries and plants in the area as bait, because nidoran are herbivores. If I had some wire I could make a snag-line trap… Ooh, and I would try and trap some magikarp or other aquatic food by weaving together branches and cattail leaves!”

The man listens intently to my little speech, nodding and “hm”ing along while scribbling on touch screen. “I see. Very good, and very quick observations. Anything else, Ms. Danielle?”

Urgh.. nobody ever uses my real name.

“Yeah, actually. I would probably move away from this area- I think there were Scyther tracks on the ground, and those are just too territorial.”

He smiles a bit, then finishes his notes with a “Duly noted!” and closes up the touch screen. Then, he walks back over to his dais and begins flicking and handling the controls.

“Now, for the second part of the test – you are to procure some water and build a shelter with the materials that will appear before you. Please resume your place at the starting circle!”

This time, no holographic scenery appears. Instead, the floor opens up in various places and is replaced by… real scenery this time! A new floor rises up, covered in sand, different varieties of real shrubby plant. Alongside this patch of prairie some tables are produced containing… plastic wrap? Scissors, gloves, some bowls… a bunch of sticks…a small shovel, and a tarp. Huh.

Shelter and water, huh?

Okay dig some holes untill you reach most sand/soil, throw some of the shrubs into said hole, place the bowl in the center on top of the shrubs, cover the hole in plastic wrap, create an air tight seal by covering the edges of the plastic wrap in sand, place a small to meadium sized rock over the bowl on the plastic wrap, and now we wait for the sun to do its work.

So, using the tarp and sticks we can set up one of those condensation condensers and have the water drip off into a bowl. Not sure how well this would work in this setting though, it tends to be desert areas that one uses this. Does make sure the water is as clean as the tarp and bowls though.

Suggestion two: using a base layer of shrubby leaves and an upper layer of sand to filter the -

Damnit all, reread and realised we're lacking a stream and also need shelter. So, uh, the tarp is probably gonna need to be used for a tent. Can use woven shrub leaves to make bindings.

Another timer starts, and it’s GO TIME!

Not having too many friends and attending a pretty good public school has its benefits. I put a lot of time after school studying up on the neat things I would learn in culinary, crafting class, and Survival 101. A solar still is a nice, basic way to collect water – and the sun does most of the work, which is always nice. Thank youuuu, Sun!

Anyways, I quickly start onto a hole with the shovel. It’s short, but sturdy enough, and the soil and sand here is nice and easy to move. Not like the clay back home. Man… that stuff is a bitch to dig through! The metal of the shovel cuts through sand, soil, and roots alike though, and within a few minutes I spot moisture. I take the larger of the two bowls and place it ontop of the sandy soil, but then I have an even better idea.

Turning around and rising to my feet, I begin pulling off large green sections of brush. I stuff this down in the hole and then put the bowl ontop where it is level and secure. There’s plenty of water in the plants – might as well make use of it!

>>>>

Building the rest of the still is just a matter of cutting up some of the clear plastic wrap, which is thankfully rather thick, burying the ends, and then weighing down the middle. Easy, solid construction – that delicious water would be mind if I was dying.

>Now for shelter construction!
>Some branches, brush, grasses, a tarp, scissors, and some twine are at your disposal.

>Dani is a SURVIVOR

I stand up, brushing my hands on my knees to knock off the pine needles and dirt I am now covered with. In a matter of minutes – a personal record, I think, I have managed to build one of my most impressive shelters to date.

The tarp is anchored by forked sticks in three places, and the forth corner I have tied to a very large, sturdy stick. This keeps the end propped up and provides a nice sloping structure that should survive all but the harshest winds and be able to keep me dry of any rain that would fall. If I had some mosquito netting I would have a veritable palace on my hands! Okay, well, not really… but it’s pretty damn nice!

Ya know, I think I should show off some, actually – I’m sure I have plenty of time on my hands.

Getting to work, I gather brush, grass, twine, and green branches from a couple pine saplings. As I work, I fall into a sort of zen-like state… My hands just operate on their own, knotting and pulling, twisting…

“… Ms. Danielle?”

“What?”

“…Ms. Danielle! I think you have sufficiently finished the test!”

I snap out of my little survivor trance, the proctor standing next to me – a look of concern on his face. Standing up, I turn around and…. I can see why.

I didn’t stop at cushions. I made a couch – out of sand. A couch. I might have gone a little overboard.

I wipe the sweat from my brow, plant my hands on my hips, and stare wistfully off into the distance. “Well… at least now I won’t have to drink my own piss.”

“What was that Ms. Danielle?”

“Uh, nothing!”

I step through sliding double doors once more. This time, it is not to an empty room. The same white tiles greet me but this time there are also three cages. Another scientist: this time a tall, darker man. However, he isn’t alone – a portly man wearing the standard red Ranger apparel is with him, poke balls at his side. “Welcome to your final test, Dani.” The scientist greets me with a smile and a short wave. “My name is Gregory, and this is Ranger Ortega. He will be here in case of emergency.”

I give them a small nod and wave each, apprehensive but still trying to maintain my usual smile. “Please to meet both of you. I’m ready whenever you are.”

“Excellent! For the initial test, I would like you to wai-“

I can’t help but finish his sentence with a laugh, “… on the grey starting circle?”

He chuckles a bit himself. “That’s right. I ask that you please wait there, as is standard. When the first test starts a cage will open. Use the tools that appear on a table behind you to befriend or calm the Pokémon inside. Ranger Ortega will intervene if you feel unduly threatened.”

Ranger Ortega gives a nod while thumbing one of the balls on his belt. “My Hypno’ll calm them down. No worries, miss.”

“… Yes. Thank you, Ranger.” Gregory gives a weary smile, rubbing his brow. He must be tired – he’s probably been doing this all day and still has hours left. “As you calm each Pokémon a new one will appear, until you have cleared all 3 cages. Shall we begin?”

I nod and then take my starting place.
The test initializes, with a table rising from the floor behind me and a cage door opening, showing a… Huh. A growlithe…. Uh-oh. He sees me and immediately sets up on his back haunches, growling and baring his teeth. He’s so small though!

I put on the fireproof glove, which fits pretty snugly. Good. Then I pocket some beef with and grab the ball with the left. I contemplate the water bottle but… with a fire-blooded creature like Growlithe like will be a last resort.

I approach him. He eyes be warily, his growling intensifying and his body coiling lower and lower on his legs. I try a gentle, friendly approach first. “Shhh…. Shhh….” I wave my hands softly at him, crouching down and then gesturing with the ball. The little shit ain’t having it. He barks at me, a few sparks popping out of his mouth, and then he twitches about, devolving into a barking little mess.

“Fine… you wanna play hardball? We can play hardball.” I toss away the ball and grab out some beef. He sniffs the air, and his posture changes slightly. His growl deepens. “Good . You’re hungry, ain’tcha! Come on!” He follows my hand and the beef with his eyes, and when I toss him some he pounces onto it voraciously, turning his back to me.

“Gotcha.”

I quickly come up behind him, grabbing him by the haunches. He yelps, and starts kicking and fighting to get out of my grasp. Nope! I grab onto his jaws with the gloved hand, keeping it tightly closed while I “Shh!” him repeatedly. His fighting falters a bit, but he’s still to feisty.

“Fine! Time for spritzing town. Population? Mr. Fluffy Asshole!” I grab the water bottle and begin squirting him with it.

>A few minutes later…

Well, I finally got him to calm down… The growlithe has turned into a “Little cutie patootie, aren’t youuuu?” and is enjoying me feeding him beef and scratching his belly. After a moment or two, Ranger Ortega takes out a pokeball and returns him, and the second cage opens.

It’s been two minutes of waving a banana in this stupid sudowoodo’s face, and nothing. No movement. No response. If I hadn’t used all the beef you would have tried that, but I’m pretty sure sudowoodo’s are omnivorous scavengers. It should take the banana!

“Why won’t you take my banana!?!”

>>>>

You are Gregory Waln, Scientist, and you just witnessed a young girl throw a banana at a Sudowoodo while screaming at it. For his part, your new “friend” Ortega is snorting and chuckling under his breath. You just rub your brow again. It’s been a long day.

>>>

Time to try something different. My teachers always worked to reinforce one idea in my head: if at first you don’t succeed, try something different!

And if they say me now, furiously blowing into a silver whistle at a sudowoodo they probably would have quit their jobs out of hopelessness for the next generation.

I’m just about to give up and get the squirt bottle, and I’m throwing my arms up while blowing the whistle when-

It mimics me.

I stand there, starting, whistle dangling in my mouth with my arms in the air – and the sudowoodo has copied me. Now we’re in business.

>>>>

If I never make it as a trainer, sudowoodo fitness instructor is a real possibility. By trying various trills, whistles, shrills, and sequences I have figured out that this sudowoodo, or the whole species, like dancing. Making a little tune on the whistle and waving my arms about, I dance the sudowoodo right out of the cage. I get so excited when it steps out of the cage that I actually hug it a little, and it hugs me back.

Nice. Beat that, suckahs.
>>
>>36145305

I’m almost there. 1 cage to go. Ortega returns the sudowoodo, Gregory flips some switches, presses some buttons, and….

The door opens. A thick plume of smoke rises, and the acrid smell fills my nostrils.

“Ms. 2795, I must advise you – if you feel overwhelmed just say the word and Ortega will return it!”

“Uhhh… Thanks Gregory!” I’m probably shaking a little, and I know my voice was trembling. What the heck are they throwing me to now…? A charizard? Am I going to be some overgrown lizard’s roast luncheon...? Will I never see Grey or Mary again...? I don't want to die I'm-too-youn-

It’s a clefairy.

I blink. It blinks back. My mouth hangs open.

So check it's face for anomalies and then make it laugh if we reckon it's a ditto.

A smile creeps onto my face as relief washes over me. I am a…. little confused, yes, but at least it’s not a Charizard! “Isn’t that rightttt…?” I crouch down, gesturing to the little pink furball. “You little adorable thing? You’re not a Charizard, are y-“

What is it doing?

The clefairy steps out of the cage as I gesture to it, big dopey smile on its face. Its speed increases as it begins singing a haunting melody, and its arms…. Start twirling. Holding one finger up on each hand, the Clefairy begins twirling its arms and singing, its eyes slowly drifting closed as…

“A storm cloud…!?” I jump up from my crouched position, watching as lightning builds in the cloud. I quickly move away, knocking over the materials table and taking cover.

The sound of lighting fills the room.

“Holy shit! That… that little thing’s fucking deadly!” I can scarcely hear myself over the howling of wind, and I can’t elp but flinch as a lightning bolt strikes near my leg.

“Dani…! Dani…. Just say the word and we’ll return it…!” Gregory is crouched behind his dias, hands over his head and praying he doesn’t get hit by a bolt again. Ortega is trying to stand against the storm, shouting to his clefairy.

“Blanca…! Blanca, turn it down a notch…!”

The clefairy can’t hear him, or maybe the destructive little shit doesn’t care. The lightning storm just continues to grow.

“Do it, Ortega! Do it! I can’t stop her in this!” I yell out from behind the table, but I can’t even be sure that he heard me until he raises his hands to return –

A lightning bolt strikes him, square in the chest.

“Holy shit! Ortega!” I’m on my hands and knees, wanting to run over to his still form but not daring to rise from the safety of the table.

“Dani…! Dani, we have to get out of here! It’s too dangerous!" Gregory is gesturing to me from behind the dais. "But what about Ortega?!" We can't just leave him, and it's too dangerous to move his body like this...! I don’t know what to do, who knew clefairy could be so dangerous! Somebody... help...!

But nobody comes to help.

I'm desperate at this point. My arms are wrapped about my knees, and I'm tucked into a little ball just waiting to die. “Come’on…. Think Dani, Think! This is no time to hide! This is the time…”

A mysterious voice, hispanic and manly, answers me,“….To be a hero, Dani. OOH YEAHHHHH!” No. It can't be.

“… Hawlucha man?” I look out into the storm and, sure enough, it’s the ghost of the golden mask himself. His spectral form leans down, handing me a golden lucha mask.

“That’s right, Dani. But I’m not the hero here. You are! OOOOH YEAHHHH!”

I tie the strings of the mask behind my head. It fits well. It feels.... right.

I take a deep breath, and stand to face the little monster.

“Hey, you PINK BITCH!” The clefairy is momentarily snapped out of its song and looks at me, confused. I leap over the table, golden mask gleaming in the faint light. The clefairy takes on a look of horror. “That’s right! WHY DON’T YOU TAKE A BITE OUT OF THIS..!?” I Flex, ripping the sleeves of my shirt. “DANGEROUS DANI IS GONNA SLAP SOME SENSE INTO YOU! GET’SUM!” The clefairy begins to twirl faster and faster in desperation as I march towards it in slow, steady strides.

Oh no. Not today. It can try, but it can’t stop the lucha.

I approach the little thing. It panics, and turns to run. “NOT TODAY, FUZZBALL! OHHH YEAH!” I grab onto its shoulders, and it begins squeaking and thrashing its little limbs about. “Time for a ride…. ON THE PAIN TRAIN!” I wrap my arms about its chest, coil my knees….

And then I rear back.

Perfect suplex. Hawlucha man would be proud.

>If you are unhappy with the suplex-isn't-canon.... well, let me know and I can try to work something out.
Enh, well suplexing is a bit over the top but having Dani be above average in wrassling pokemans would be fun. Maybe make it so that she dodged a few lightning strikes, slapped the clefairy, it retaliated with a doubleslap that she dodges and retaliates with a finishing slap. Series of events shocks the clefairy so much it just sits down stunned. Or something.

But yeah, shopping:
- Pokeballs are a must
- We'll need food supplies, presumably some camping gear (tent or tarps/couple aluminium poles, trangia, bottle of fuel for it, water purification tablets, bivvy bags for emergency temperature changes or when we hit the mountains,
- Depending on what clothing we already have to hand, we'll want solid walking boots, few changes of walking socks so we always have a dry pair, large rucksacks to carry anything we can't stick in a SILPH item ball and the power supplies to charge stuff
- Food specifically for potential pokemon
- Obligatory towel

>>
>>36146739
also buy a map and the book from that guy we left our first pokemon with.
>>
>>36146739
Adding to that:
- Rope or something to act as a washing line to dry stuff on
- Plastic crockery and cutlery, nothing fancy, but worth mentioning
- Torches
- First aid kit, alongside standard pokemon healing items (unless they work on humans too?)
- Maybe an emergency super repel in case we wind up with a near fainted party or something
- Comfy shorts heuheuehu

>>36146824
Definitely this too

Mareep
Espurr
Tentacool

>We now rejoin Grey

You are Grey, aspiring trainer and young man bored out of his mind. It’s been three hours since you defeated that graveler, and you’re STILL waiting on your test results.

>>>>

The graveler scrabbles at the edge of the wall. Grey looks to the door – his “escape,” the completion of the test. Success. “No,” he mumbles while turning around, retracting his hand from the large button on the wall. He runs over to the virtual graveler, extending a hand.

“Come on! I’ll help you! It’s okay!” He reaches, trying to grab onto the large rock beast –

The test dematerializes. The graveler disappears. Grey plops down, hand still outstretched. Spiny scrabbles over beside him, cooing and gurgling.

“You are brave, and clever. But you are also… rash.” The woman scientist’s voice echoes out from an intercom. Her face appears on the large screen where the countdown once was. Grey turns to her. “You could have built a raft. You could have climbed the rope ladder... Could have avoided the graveler and gone around. You could have let it fall. Instead… you always take the path less chosen.” She chuckles a bit. “No doubt you have the skills to be a great trainer, and to survive… but make sure that in the pursuit of glory you remember that your safety is your number one priority. Then, your Pokémon. Then your friends and other citizens. Then, other Pokémon. Etc.”

“Okay, sure. Be safe/// But,I have to do my best to do what is right.”

“Of course. But… do not lose yourself in the process of becoming greater, Grey.”

Thinking on that in the present, you run a hand through your hair. “Don’t lose myself… Take care of myself…” You’re reminded of the words of Nick, who you spoke to before the tests.

>>>>

“Hey, Nick!” Grey calls out to the back of the blonde standing in the same line. Team Gray. They are in the same color. Should be interesting. Nick turns. He seems surprised anyone called out to him. He catches Grey’s face and, then a little… anger appears on his face when he realizes who it is. Grey can’t blame him.

“Hey, I heard about your apology. I’m sorry too. No hard feelings?” Grey tries to bury the axew, as it were.

“Yeah, sure.” Nick’s tone is a little cold, but the anger seems to have been dampened. “But I swear I’m gonna beat your ass in a battle one day. You better not let our color down! I wanna challenge you at your best, you understand?” Grey smiles a bit, nodding.

“Yeah, I understand!”

“I’m gonna be the best, Grey! This guy right here!”

You text off a quick message to the professor (“Of course. Apologies, sir. On my way, then!”) and then another to Dani (“Have to meet prof. Please text me my results if you see them?”) as you head towards the main elevators for the Arena.

>>>>

The doors swing open onto a dimmer section of the arenas. Instead of the bright, loud, practically electric spirit of the crowded main floors you have a dark tunnel cast in a stark incandescent light.

You navigate through various numbers, all of which have a variety of names and numbers on them alluding to titles, departments, and things you never would have thought of. “Arena Janitorial Union Representative…?” Huh. Soon enough you arrive at the right door. Before you go to enter, however, you receive a text from Dani telling you that she will be on the lookout and that she looks forward to seeing you. You smile, then tuck your phone away. You press the enter key on the doorpad and it opens with a swish to a room much like the testing chambers. This one, however, is filled with various machinery and a…. glass dome?

There is a large glass dome in the center of the room, with a sort of meta cage-exoskeleton on the outside of it. The metal bits connect to a series of wires and antennae…. Interesting. Inside the cage, even more interestingly, is… it’s like a little piece of forest, with a Nidorino inside.

“Grey. Glad you could make it, you little shit.” The Professor appears from a sort of cubicle, wheeling a chair away from a desk and getting out of it. He’s still smoking a cigar. “I was about to continue without you.”

“Now… do you have any idea what I’m doing here?”

Ohshit, didn't notice that it was a nidorino, thought it was a nidoran. Making it evolve without a moon stone sounds like a sensible suggestion
>>
>>36148639

You peer around at the cage, the machinery, and the wires connecting the various computers and systems. You really can’t make much out, but you can at least guess. “You’re…. either trying to make that Nidoran evolve without a stone, or you’re going to put me in there, flip the switch, and make a Nidoran-human hybrid.”

Pine just smokes on his cigar for a bit while giving you a squint-eyed look. Finally, he pulls it out, lets out a firm “No,” and walks back to his computer. “Those are good ideas, though! I’m definitely writing that second one done as a future research project.”

You gulp a little.

He walks over to the cage, gesturing him to join you. You notice that the glass is probably reflective on the other side, making it one-way. “You couldn’t be expected to know what I’m working on. Nobody knows. It’s highly secret, and hardly anyone talks about the phenomenon that I am study.”

You stand there for a moment before you figure you need to follow through on that. “… Which is?”

“Why Pokémon don’t naturally attack humans without provocation. Why Zapdos, Dragonites, and Salamance don’t rampage through our cities and kill us all.” Despite the severity of that statement he doesn’t seem surprised, worried, concerned…. As if it’s normal to talk about the death of humankind. "Why they act like they don't even know we exist unless we do something first."

You muse on it for a bit, drawing up on the whisperings you heard from teachers and adults. Things you pieced together from conspiracy theories, internet scraps, personal experience. You had never really thought about the “peaceful” state of things. It’s quite the mystery. In plain sight but never questioned. “Maybe it’s because we’ve come up with this sort of harmony..? They know and respect our abilities, we theirs…? OR, maybe… maybe it’s an artifact of their original design or purpose? They were weapons for the war, after all.”

“We’re about to find out, Grey. You don’t have the specifics down, and the true answer is something else entirely, but… yes, it’s something about their intentional design. That book I was reading in the train?”

You nod your head. You remember – “You wouldn’t put it down.”

“That’s because it had a part, or should I say key, to the puzzle. Pokémon are weapons of war, yes – but the intricacies of their natures are of no human design. No goddamned records mention any sort of general... programming, worldwide, that protects humans. It’s actually the OPPOSITE of their original design – to kill.”

“Come on. We’re going inside.”

>>>>

A minute later and you stand in the chamber with the professor, facing the Nidorino who is lazily laying in the dirt, enjoying the warmth of the artificial sun above him.

“This is not a registered ‘mon, Grey. It’s wild. The only reason it hasn’t attacked is because we haven’t broken the… natural law, if you will. It feels safe. It has grown accustomed to this chamber and we haven’t threatened it.”

“Right, okay….” You don’t feel too good about this.

He just gives you another look. “Tha’fuck you mean by that, boy?”

“Just… my teacher threw rocks at me. My dodging ability is better than most. What about you, old man? You’ going to be alright?”

He gives you a large resounding slap on the back. “I'll have to meet your teacher one day. Buy him a drink." You laugh sarcastically. "As for me? You’re talking to a former regional champ, ya little shit. I’ll be fine.” He produces a small remote out of one of his coat pockets, flipping open a glass case on top covering a large white dial. “Do you know how the concept of dissonance works on a basic physical level?” You nod. “Good. Basically, what Is about to happen is I’m going to produce a set of electromagnetic pulses which is going to disrupt a specific… signal, if you will. It has never worked before, but this time… the Nidorino should attack us. I want you here to make sure that it doesn’t just like me.”

“Well I’m a pretty likable gu-“

“Shut up.”

He clicks the dial on and starts cranking on the pulse.

There’s a faint humming coming from outside the glass now. The nidorino is laying there-
“Get ready. It’s working this time.” He keeps cranking the dial.

The nidorino starts clumsily getting up onto its legs, shaking its head. It looks… confused. The dial keeps turning, the humming increases. The nidorino-

It jumps onto all four legs at once, all hints of confusion or laziness completely gone. It turns its head to the left and glares at you, pure hatred and killing intent rolling off of the beast. You steel yourself, but there is a definite trembling to your knees. The Nidorino takes a step towards you, a low growl beginning to emit from its throat. “This has never happened before. It’s working… The little shit is acknowledging us. See that? The true nature of these things – killing machines-“

The nidorino charges.

You begin to dive to the side, but the nidorino anticipates your movement and shifts its momentum to meet you. It’s moving too fast, your fear got the best of you.

Thankfully, the Professor is there to grab you, and yank you out of its path. “The thing’s aggression, its reflexes… we need to get out of here.” The Nidorino is already turning back to charge you again, but a flash of light is emitted and a Rhyhorn appears. “Maximus! Take down!”

The large gray beast grapples with the head of the nidorino for a moment, meeting its charge. A moment later and it has tossed the purple monstrosity bodily. You and the professor are already at the door at that point when he tosses you out. He retrieves Maximus and then exits himself. A moment later there is a series of loud banging. You suspect the nidorino is trying to break through to you, the “threats.”

You both take a moment to ease off the adrenaline and catch your breath. Your thoughts are “Wow,” “holy shit,” and “… this is incredible!” Not exactly reflections to publish in an academic journal but… you’ll leave those to the professor for now.
The professor is busy lighting up another cigar before he speaks again. “It’s… as I suspected. I didn’t expect such an increase in aggression and strength, though. I’ll have to do future experiments with weaker monsters in the future.” A large draw from the smoking paper. “This’ll rock the academic world… biggest damn secret the world over… But still…. Bigger mysteries…” He gets up from the cold floor and hurries over to a computer, where he furiously begins typing.

You put your hand on the glass, peering through to the Nidorino inside. It’s raging, ramming against glass, trees, and the rocks inside. Kicking up a veritable storm of anger and confusion. Pity runs through your soul… it just looks so… unlike a Pokémon. You walk over to the Professor. He might have his answers for now, but you still have questions. “Professor.”

He grunts, but doesn’t look up.

“You should turn it off. The Nidorino is suffering.” He grunts again and pushes the remote towards you. You take it, and crank the dial back down before clicking it off. “And why wasn’t Maximus affected? And… what did you mean, its true nature was that of a killing machine? Pokémon aren’t like that. Not until you… do THAT to them.”

“Look… Kid.” He puts out his cigar and cradles his head in his hands, letting out a long sigh. “I loved being a trainer, and what we have been able to do with Pokémon is… nothing short of amazing. Most of currently here wouldn’t be alive right now without them. Course, the human race wouldn’t have been so decimated if it wasn’t for them… that’s what I meant. They’re weapons. They are different now, but we need to understand why. We can’t live in the dark with a mystery this big, this… dangerous.”

You nod along. You understand, but it’s… troubling in a way.

“What’s your take, kid? Give me the damn truth, too. I don’t want no pretty lies. Always do more trouble than good.”

this is some fucked up shit.

The implications are quite dangerous. If you were able to figure it out some sort of "evil" organisation could as well. If they did figure out how to do that... well a lot of people could end up dead.
>>
>>36150551
>"Publishing this could be dangerous you know. It'd only take one madman who's dissatisfied with the world as it is to do an awful lot of damage."
>"Perhaps if your research advanced to a point that you knew how to do the opposite, how to enforce the docility in the event of someone attempting the opposite... Perhaps that would be a much better time to let the world learn of this."
>>
>>36150551
This should be a secret of the highest order at least until we can neutralize the signal someone else sets out. imagine what some manic could do with his thing.

>"This is definitely a huge breakthrough, but we need to be cautious about it. Isn't that what scientists do? Factors of safety and all that?"
>"Publishing anything now without further research into what this is and how to potentially stop it would just be reckless."

We will go over this conversation a bit later. I have noted your responses. I want to keep moving, hoping to cover a bit more ground tonight....

>>>>

Not five minutes after the experiment’s over you receive a text from Dani (“Test scores in. You ranked highest in your color! Nick second. You ranked 6th in region! Congrats!”)

>Response?

You mention to the Prof. that the test results are in. He gives a little “Oh, is that so?” and after a bit of navigating on his computer he turns his screen towards you. You take a look and… sure enough, you are the top of Gray. Gray…. Why did they have to put you in-

“Hah! You’re Grey in Gray. That’s funny shit, kid.” You groan.

>>>>

A couple hours later, after having talked with the Professor about being a trainer, rankings, and his research, you find yourself waiting in the main hall. You check your watch again and do another scan of the crowd… “Where could she be…?”

“Talking to yourself again?” Dani. “It’s just like when we first met earlier today!” She does her little giggle, and you can’t help but smile and turn around.

“Yeah. I hope you don’t mind it too much once we get on the road.” She laughs at that, and then the two of you start walking towards the area where you first registered for Gray Team. Dani already picked up her standard issue gear and personal items that were cleared to be taken with her, now it’s your turn.

You step up to the attendant and hand him your ticket and list off your registration code. A minute later and he comes back, carrying a container ball. You note that its contents contain your color’s standard issue clothes, which are…

You step out of the men’s locker room a few minutes later, wearing some durable, medium-weight synthetic clothing. Your pants are black and allow you to breathe but maintain a nice temperature. Same with your shirt (all colors have white and black shirts). Your jacket, hat, and shoes however are of different shades of gray – and you have a couple layers for your tops. You have the clothing you wore in, but you like the uniform. Comfortable yet functional.

Dani comes out a little later, sporting the girls’ uniform in a nice dark red. Upon seeing you her face begins to match the pigment of her clothes, and she coughs into her hand a couple times. “Y-you… you uh, look really nice in that, Grey. I mean you look nice in gray, Grey. Uh… nice, uh…” She sets into a bit of nervous laughing after that. You just smile and laugh a bit with her.

“You look nice too, Dani.” Yeah, you had wondered if she could get any more red- she can.

Your first stop is retrieving your Pokémon, so you return to Erwin’s. It looks like he’s attracted a customer… albeit a very young one. When you approach, Erwin is showing off some of his diagrams and sketches to a little boy who is holding a mareep balloon. The boy seems very engrossed in whatever story Erwin is reading.

“Well hello there, you’d fine folks! We’ve got some fresh’ Sorties here! Congratulations!” Erwin greets you with a wide smile and a clap on the back as the little boy wanders off. “Here to collect’n your Pokémon, Grey?”

“And help you, of course!” Dani nods her head in agreement with that. “I’m going to sell 10 of your books before the end of today – mark my words.”

“Haha. I like’n that kind of fightin’ spirit, friend. Any help is appreciated, of course’n.”

Dani speaks up after that. “Hey, Grey? Just wanted to check – do you want me to help you sell, or would you prefer I go shopping for supplies to save time?”

It'll be more fun and effective with both us, especially with Dani's infectious enthusiasm.
As for saving time, wouldn't worry about a single day. Our collective aptitude from the tests shows we're more than capable of catching up and we've got a headstart with Espurr anyway
>>
>>36151401

>>
>>36151337

You pick up your sign, shaking your head back and forth a bit as you think about it. A day won’t be much time in the long run, and you already have Espurr. You’re doing great. Besides, with your collective aptitudes you’ll be fine. No need to rush or take on the shopping separate.“I trust your judgment, Dani. It’s your call – but you’re welcome to stay. I’m sure that your energy and smile makes you a great salesperson.”

That’s 3 for 3 on the “Making Dani Blush” counter. You’ve got a good streak going.
>>>>

You lift up the sign that you made, start shouting out positive phrases (“If you want the best you have to know the best – the best places! Let Erwin show you where to go!”) as you scan the milling crowds for targets.
