>Anai has 3 Experience points.

You took your seat at the mostly empty bar, avoiding other patrons as much as possible, and successfully convinced the innkeep to feed and house you for your last remaining gold coin. You were about to call this a very nice day, for once. Unfortunately, some old fart with an eyepatch and breath that smells like the underworld is now in possession of the real estate surrounding your bar stool. He also brought his two big dumb friends.

You are Anai, an Atlas-user, and you really wish you had picked a different pub.

As the drunk old man continues, you really wish you had had the opportunity to change into your new leathers. “So look, as I be sayin’ lassie, this be me own pub. Owner in all but name. An’ I cannae help but notice ye completely brush me off, wha’s wit tha? We be entertainin' some long-legged lassies like you in the back, and ye show not even the slightest bit o’ interest.” He looks you up and down, still dressed in your comparatively skimpy clothing for the climate, and motions to his friends. “See, if ye want to share a meal and some booze, come over with us peaceful-like, an’ we’ll show ye a good time.” He leans down towards your ear for that last part, his sickening mead-and-scurvy breath wafting in front of your highly sensitive nose.

The two goons on either side look at you much like a jackal would a fresh carcass. You imagine Eyepatch wears the same sick smile, but haven’t turned your head to meet his gaze. His arm is still limply grasping your bare shoulder. This situation feels really, really familiar, but again your memory is so foggy you can’t quite place why.

How do you proceed?

You sigh, maybe they’ll listen to reason. “Look, I’m really sorry but I just got to town and I’m very tired. Maybe some other time?”

This only seems to irritate Eyepatch, who shifts uncomfortably. “I don’t think ye be understandin’ lassie. Ye got to pay tha toll if ye want to cross the bridge see? Same deal. Ye come with us nicely, we show ya a good time. Otherwise we ‘persuade’ ye. Understand?”

Oh. You understand. His goons have moved ever so slightly closer, and are standing with their arms crossed. His grip tightens a bit. Seems ‘No’ isn’t in their vocabulary.

We got teleported to this world, as that happened we became a jackal girl. We had a magic guidebook called an atlas dropped on us and got attacked by a Nolan wumpus which we tamed and named Sesmu. We went to the nearest sign of habitation which was a guard outpost. A necromancer with an atlas had killed the guards and chased us but buggered off when day came. Sesmu got a few wounds so got to the neast city paid for his care bought some armor and some adventuring tools then left off at the inn after we persuaded the innkeep to let us have a room and food for 1gp.
>>
>>36209917
Yeah but we're not that kinda girl, so we're about to make them regret what they're thinking. Also our clothes are more conservative than that, still far more suited for warmer climates though hence why we bought the armor and furs.

That’s it. This soggy old man has crossed the line. They think you’re just some scared little girl. They might have been right about ten years ago, but not now. You’re an Atlas-user now, and on top of that, you’ve always known how to fight. The battle with the Necromancer woke your passion for fighting, and now you’re going to unleash the beast all over this guy’s stupid face.

“Sod off, ya bleedin’ tick!” you shout at him, in a mockery of his earlier remarks to the patron he threw out into the mud. You grab his arm and whirl around, planting your other hand on his back and slamming his head into the bar. His smelly form goes limp the moment polished wood and forehead meet, and you drop him to the ground with a wild smile on your face. That’s what he gets for being a creep at a bar. His goons are stunned for a moment, then spring to action towards you.

Exhilarated and panting, you wipe off the blood on your fist with a napkin, and drag the would-be studs out and throw them next to their previous victim in the mud. “And stay out, filthy old creep!” That should teach them. You turn around to see the entire pub staring at you, in total silence. Then one man in the back shouts “Damn right!” and you smile. The pub then returns to its low din of conversation as you take your place back at the bar. The barkeep has stopped polishing his mugs and speaks, “Thank you, that man has been a pox on this pub since he got kicked off his ship a month ago. I couldn't throw him out because of his thugs, and he did actually pay for everything. Sailors make quite a bit. Atlas interrupts your meal to congratulate you on successfully ridding the bar of the eyepatched eyesore. You have unlocked a new command, CALL. With this, you can register and speak to other Atlas-users you meet and exchange information with.

While you're speaking, do you have any questions for the Atlas? Or is it time for bed?

"Ah yes, quite true. It is an ancestor-worship culture, with a pantheon of gods based around the concept of death and afterlife. The area is hot and barren, save for the provinces around the river we're currently near, so water also holds great significance." Sounds interesting, you think. You have vague memories that don't feel like your own about colorful plazas, towering temples and statues, and others like yourself.

You bid the barkeep good night and thank him for the lodging. He tells you where your room is and you turn in for the night. It’s been an interesting few days, and you still don’t quite know who you were before arriving at that lake where you tamed Sesmu. You wonder for a moment why you’re here, and what you’re supposed to do. You open atlas and look at the commands, the final one listed in grey particularly. “Origin” you say to yourself. Atlas notices your interest and answers your question before you ask it. “No one has reached that level yet, you could be the first if you try. As for what it does, that is for you to find out for yourself, not even I know.”

Why are you here? Why were you given power, you know you didn’t have these abilities before, you remember being a normal…whatever you were.

>To set myself free, and to judge the wicked.

You decide that if the recent days have shown you anything, it’s that you weren’t going to be put under anyone’s thumb ever again. No government, no schoolmaster, no bar creep would ever be able to touch you again, and you would make sure they couldn’t touch anyone else either. You weren’t going to stand by and suffer the existence of people like Eyepatch, who were parasites on people that made no contribution to the world at all, other than giving you some boxing practice. If you end up helping people because of it, that’s just icing on the cake.

You remember to set your HOME function, seeing as this bedroom is probably going to house you for at least a few days, and drift off to sleep.

(cont.)
>>
>>36212095
After a dreamless sleep you awaken to the low roar of hundreds of people in the streets, going about their business. You head downstairs and eat a quick meal of eggs and ham, the barkeep doesn't charge you on account of Eyepatch not returning to the pub after his severe beating.

You've changed into your warmer clothing now, and you flip your hood up to partially cover your ears before heading outside.

You pass through the streets with severe difficulty, the crowds are out in force as the smell of fresh meat and produce reaches your nose. Bumping and shoving through the crowd with your hood up, you realize that the crowds all seem to be moving East, towards the river which you can now smell as well. It smells fresh, and cold, with the scent of pine hanging lightly over it. You can’t hear much over the din of the populace jockeying for position to be the first to market with the incoming ship. You've got some time to yourself, and a pocket with three gold jingling around. What will you do?

>Sorry took so long, had to take care of some stuff.

You’re late, but that’s nothing new, you think. Seeing the crowds hustle and bustle, you opt for the clearer path, the rooftops. You run forward, ducking between people and find an alleyway, hopping on a stack of crates and then to a laundry line, climbing your way up onto the roof of the nearby house. From your new vantage point you can see most of the town, the headquarters sticking out like a sore, cobblestone thumb. From the north you can see a trail of black smoke coming towards the town. Must be the boat. You begin leaping between rooftops, running over boards and archways, until you finally reach your destination. Outside the fort you see a procession of ten people surrounding two heavily laden wagons full of produce and meats, with a treasurer’s strongbox being held by a guardsman. Of the people, two stand out to you. One is a man dressed much the same way as Captain Scott was, though seemingly a bit more important from the quality of his armor. The other is a tall man with graying hair in heavy studded leather and a cloak to match, with a claymore sword strapped to his back. He looks young despite that, though his back is turned to you so you can’t quite make out his features. As you observe, the apparent leader calls for the caravan to move, and they head towards the docks at a cautious pace. Seems they’re expecting company.

>Jump down among them and introduce yourself, ask for a job.
>Shadow the caravan for a bit to test them, maybe get an idea of why they’re so uptight
>leave it be, this seems a bit above your pay-grade.

Undead use the MP of their handler as stamina, since they only act as directed. Sentient undead likewise use MP for Stamina. You'd have to find a way to punch the mana out of them. It is very possible, provided you do, to knock out a vampire.

>Assuming they HAD damage reflection, yes. It's not an inherent trait to undead in this game, so it'd only be if they bought it as a power.

You deftly leap down and tuck into a roll in the middle of the street in front of the leader and claymore-guy. You rise to your feet and brush yourself off, smiling cheerily, right down the length of an ice-blue steel blade. Such good company you keep.

How will you disarm the situation? Tall dark and swordy seems to count you an enemy, as does the guard-captain next to him.

he specifically said he doesn't care about helping innocents so much as punishing the wicked.

help others was a choice. we did not choose it.

we only chose punish evil, don't be ruled.

Effectively, it was an alignment test. We went CN. No authority recognizing, anti-evil, but not pro-good.

Rule lawyering of the highest order.
But fine, lets say you don't actually give a damn about innocents at all whatsoever, you are a total psychopath that just gets off on punishing the wicket.

To put it crudely yes, it's one part of an ongoing alignment test to shape the character, but my system doesn't have alignments beyond the physical attributes of being a creature of darkness/light. You've already determined that you dislike wanton murder because of your previous run-in with the necromancer, and now you're expanding upon that saying you will absolutely not forgive people who exploit others for their own gain, as you feel like you had been in a previous life. You're closer to a chaotic good, using D&D charts, because you aren't above disrupting order or your own personal code to fulfill your goal of stopping people from being dicks and murderers.

Batman we're not.

The most common form of fiction is called fanfiction. do you think we should be a half vampire half succubus half angel half werewolf princess to because its common in fiction?
Also, no, those wicked punishers are always interested in helping people. they might say they have no constructive way to help, but they will certainly intervene and stop a wrongdoer before he does his misdeeds.

chaotic good requires altruism. DnD good is defined by its willingness towards altruism, just like evil is defined by willingness towards cruelty.
Then again, we did give barkeep repair money instead of keeping it all as reparations for harassment, so I suppose it's still debatable.

You get a better look at the swordsman, seeing his pale, almost blue, skin brings to mind the idea that he’s been sitting in the snow for the past hour, but it isn’t snowing. His pupils are so bright they seem to be glowing like a light shined through an ice crystal, and what looks like armor fades in and out of existence around his body.

You raise both hands and look down the sword leveled at your nose. “Ancestors!” you curse, “My apologies for startling you, the crowd was a bit insane so I took alternative routes. I hear you’re hiring security? How much?”

Frosty doesn’t lower his blade, but the captain does. “Considering your talents you just displayed, we could use your help. Twenty gold for helping and ten a head if trouble goes down. We’re expecting company of the armed and tree-hugging variety.” Frosty still has his blade an inch from your face.

Oh. Elves.

All damage is 1 hit per unless otherwise specified. Its about the tank save!

Do we do enough damage to make it reliably stick.

And as far as I know, that's weapon + beef, our knife is a +0 weapon, and our beef is at a pretty meh 3.

Our magic damage is 4 + focus + spell level, we have no focus, ergo total of 5. Our mana-costing attack just matches what the thug was doing with his punch. (17-12=5 phys damage) his BASIC PUNCH.

So, no. We do not, in fact, have impressive offensive capabilities.
We are dodgey. This is it.

Frosty lowers his sword, and the armor fades away, as you accept the captain’s offer. “Sure, if the work is legit. Nice sword by the way Frosty.”

“My name is Winter. You were close.” He says jokingly.

“By the way sir, is it alright if I fetch my mount? He’s stabled near the edge of town.” You ask. He taps his foot impatiently. “Unfortunately not, we’re on a strict schedule, and the crowds and your little stunt have already put us behind. This food needs to reach the docks when the ship pulls in, then we'll be providing security for the market. If you want to help then scout ahead of the convoy on foot, or better yet, use your ‘alternative routes’.”

Seems that it’s feet or bust. Give me an acrobatics roll, and then a smart+notice roll. I’ll add the mods myself.

>Acrobatics Success, Notice contest failed.

You climb up onto the rooftops with ease, eliciting a whistle from a few of the guards. Seems like you're pretty impressive at this. You scan the streets below and rooftops ahead for any sign of malice, but don't pick up anything. You signal to the convoy that all is well and they proceed into the market square. The ship pulls into port a short while later, and the anchor is dropped. It is an impressive beast with iron plating over most of its hull, and several cannons pointed off the sides, with a large smokestack protruding from the rear of the boat. Aft, if you remember correctly. Either way this ship looks like it's ready for a fight. You wonder why.

Once the ship pulls in, the captain motions for you to come down and join the caravan, and begins telling you about how you are going to proceed with guard duty. As you and Winter both split off to attend to your chores, you hear a sickening sound behind you, and something wet hits the back of your hood. You and Winter whirl around to see a tall man in a green studded leather armor wearing a mask made from the bones of some animal behind the guard captain. A long, curved blade is currently sticking out of the captain’s neck, a fountain of blood now dribbling down his chest.

“Requiescat in pace.” He says, as five flaming arrows rain down upon the convoy.
