The stars are a pleasant calming sight, even if you don’t why it is so for yourself. Perhaps, you think, it’s because it offers the possibility something beyond this world, it offers a possibility of you leaving, a small measure of calming hope. As you look at the sky you see that the stars are as varied as the trees of this world, they flicker in all sorts of colors and even seem to be moving on their own volition.

You turn away from the sky to lie on your side. One would have to be terribly powerful to create a world to an extent that it included the stars in the sky.

You sigh as yet another pebble is thrown at your face, interrupting precious sleep.

Your assailant is quite stealthy, since the last rock you haven’t closed your eyes to return back to sleep, yet you didn’t see any signs of movement. Although, the rocks do come infrequently enough to allow a decent period of sleep, so being too tired to fight it at the moment, you close your eyes.

Hey Auri, Never use worst of X rolls, holy fucking shit that's so stupid.

You march on through the bizarre and never predictable forest, with Cecilia humming serenely at your side and with Vi perched on her shoulder.

The grass underfoot is a light purple color.

You lean your head over to the side. “You still won’t tell us where we’re going, nor what your plan is?”
“Where’s the fun in that?” Vi pulls on Cecilia’s ear. “Turn in the direction of that twisted yellow tree.” Vi turns to face you. “We’re almost there, so please try to stay patient, hmm?” She oozes those words out in the most condescending tone she can muster.

For the sake of progress you let her have her fun, but you most certainly don’t like being kept in the dark. The more you march, the more you mull over how little you know and it frustrates you. Perhaps, if you played the fool you could get more information out of her by playing on her nature, you want to be sure that she even has a plan to begin with. Or maybe a change of topics would serve as a distraction from your feelings.

You doubt you’re going to get anything more out of her about your journey for now.

“So, what’s life like in this forest?” you ask.
Cecilia begins to speak, but is quickly cut off by Vi. “Life is just that, I don’t even know where to begin, you idiot. I don’t know how different this place is from the world that you come from, but if you are like anyone else who came through here in the past, you don’t know either.”

You can’t argue with that, while you can’t remember the exact details of what your life was like before waking up in the garden, you have an intuitive feeling that it was nothing like this place.

“Alright then, is there anything about this world that we should know?” you press on.
Vi sighs, “I suppose there is one thing that you must know.” She pauses. “The person who created this world, the Sorceress as my ancestors called her, created it to be a garden. She doesn’t want anything in the garden that she didn’t put in herself.”

Vi gives your whole body a long look. “I doubt she placed you here, so about that one thing you must know." She pauses yet again. "You'll know if you ever see her, so avoid her at all costs. That’s all.”

The three of you stop in front of a small stream.

Vi points with her leg. “We’re here. Ed, be a good boy and see if you can find anyone across the water. The pig and I will check this side.”

You sigh and for the sake of progress jump across the stream. You venture a few yards into the tree line on the other side, careful to keep view of the water.

The trees here grow out of the ground with roots turned to the sky and fruit bearing branches close to the ground. What would compel a tree to grow in a way, you don’t know.

You turn back to check where the stream is. It’s about a dozen yards behind you, and then suddenly it’s not.
Leaves and branches stick to you as you roll down a hill unable to stop yourself. You paw desperately at the ground to slow your descent, but thankfully end up stopping in something quite soft.

A bear. A rather large bear stopped your roll down the hill, for the moment he stares at your body. Panic surges through your body as your heart starts to beat erratically. Your hand reaches for your sword.

You unsheathe your sword and stab into the bear’s front leg as quickly as you can.

“Hey man, what the fuck is wrong with you!?” A normal sounding man’s voice shouts out at you.

You’re certain that the voice came from in front of you, but your brain is telling that would be impossible. The bear sits back on his haunches, as he observes his paw in the air.

He looks at you indignantly. “You better not be thinking about doing that again!” His mouth moved to the words.

You stand there holding your sword awkwardly in the air, stupefied. This is a bear, bears don’t speak now nor have they ever. You sigh, an exasperated sigh at the whole world and sheathe your sword.

“Are you alright?” You ask tentatively as you walk closer to the bear. “Ooof” The air is pushed out of you as the bear swipes into your stomach with his good paw.
“Now were even for that.” The bear says dismissively as you lie on the ground, gasping.

Behind you, you hear a familiar evil giggling.

Not really even, but you’re not going to complain. You get back up, brushes the dirt and crumpled leaves off your body.

“Hello Ryg, I’ve been looking for you.” Vi says floating in the air next to you. “You’ll have to forgive this one, he’s quite slow, unfortunately.”
“I was merely defending myself. She never told me that we were looking for you.” You reply.
“He attacked you?” Cecilia asks with genuine curiosity.

Sensing that you have already lost this battle you remain silent.

“Well, what is it then?” Ryg asks huffily.
“I was hoping that you would perhaps answer a few questions that these two characters have” Vi points back to you and Cecilia. “And maybe tell us where we might find the Warden…” Vi blinks her eyes coquettishly.

Ryg turns his head to face the air. “Your first request can be arranged, on some conditions, but the second I’ll have to think about.”
“What are your conditions, sir?” Cecilia steps forward.
“Hmm, you three will bring me the leaves to make a salve for my wound, and…” He pauses for dramatic effect. “That one will bow before me and beg for my forgiveness, right now.” He points a paw directly at you.
“Sounds easy enough.” Vi says casually.
“Wait…” You interject.
Both Vi and Ryg turn to you “What?”

don't say nothing. bow and beg forgivenes

it is the honorable thing to do anyways since you have attacked an innocent in your foolish ignorance
>>
>>36310423

“Nothing.” You say quietly.
Vi grins madly “Well, get on with it.” She floats over you and pushes down on your head with her foot.

A brief fantasy of you living in a cabin with a bearskin rug and a fairy in a jar flashes in your mind. You bend down at the knees and then bow low to the ground.

“Please, forgive me for stabbing you so foolishly.” You say into the dirt, keeping your anger out of your voice.

Ryg remains silent, so after a few more seconds of bowing you get up.

“I…I didn’t really expect you to do it.” Ryg chuckles lightly and raises his wounded limb in the air. “I really can’t stay angry at you after that, but I will still need that salve, it should look like...”.
He pauses, a mischievous look comes over his face. He laughs and continues “Follow the stream up there, that way…” He indicates with his good paw. “Until you come across a pond, the herb I want will be not blue, and it will have the cleanest looking leaves. Bring back only one” He finishes.

“Why don’t you just tell us what herb you need?” You ask, frustrated.

“I’m not so badly injured. I also want to see if you’re as slow as Vi suggests, and it’s not too often that I get to entertain myself. Oh and you can’t help them Vi.” Ryg replies.

You sigh.

“Well you heard him, get on with it. Don’t be slow in more than one way.” Vi pulls on your ear. “Make sure this one doesn’t get lost.” Vi says to Cecilia.

“I won’t!” Cecilia cheerfully replies.

You turn to march off to find the stream again.

“So about the warden…” you hear Vi say as you walk off.
[1/?]
>>
>>36311370
The stream was easy enough to find again. You and Cecilia follow it in the direction that Ryg indicated.

“Isn’t this world so much fun?” Cecilia asks you.
“Fun is most certainly not the word I would use.” You reply flatly to emphasize your feelings.
“Oh come on, keep an open mind.” She runs ahead of you. “Have you ever seen anything so beautiful in your life?” She raises her arms in the air to indicate she’s talking about the forest.

You look at your surroundings to see multicolored trees in the shape of waves crashing into one another. The branches and leaves twist into one another. The sunlight pokes through the leaves here and there, all of which gives you the impression of a multicolored sky with stars shining brightly.
You turn away. You can’t deny that it’s beautiful, but you still can’t shake the feeling that there’s some other place, some other world that you call home. But it’s just that, a feeling with no memories to back it up.

“It’s beautiful.” You admit sadly.

“Isn’t it?” Cecilia says brightly as she turns forward and starts humming.

The two of you finally reach the pond after walking for about half an hour. You see that it’s practically a rainbow of colors surrounding the pond.

“Why make this easy?” You say to no one in particular.

Cecilia runs ahead and starts looking through the herbs. You circle around the pond remembering Ryg’s instructions as you look as you observe a myriad of different colored herbs all with a few to many spots on their leaves. Green, purple, yellow, red, and blue, all with different types of leaves. A few minutes later Cecilia comes back with a green herb in her hand.

“Look at the leaves! There’s not even the tiniest spot on them!” She says excitedly.

You take the herb from her to see that it is indeed perfectly clean, you look back to the pond to see what other herbs you saw.

“No.” You say quickly.
You walk over the slightly dirty yellow herbs and pick them up. “These are the one’s we want, I think.”
“Okay, if you say so” Cecilia takes a look at the green herbs and the drops them to the ground. “Let’s go, Ryg must be in pain without that.”

You take one last look at the rainbow ring surrounding the pond. The water is so clear one might briefly think that there was none there.

“Beautiful.” You say quietly and turn to leave with Cecilia.

As you journey back, you can’t help but notice Cecilia grinning and staring at you.

“What?” You eventually ask.
“You like this world.” She smiles.
“I most certainly do not.” You wave her off. “We don’t belong here…” You mutter quietly.
“Oh, then where do we belong?” Cecilia asks.
“I don’t know. I just think that we don’t belong here, plus Vi said that sorceress probably didn’t put us here, so if that’s the case then we truly need to leave.” You reply.
“You don’t know tha…” Cecilia stops midsentence.

On the path in front of you is a menacing looking boar, sniffing about the plants. The tusks on it are quite large and could easily gore a man.
You’ve seen this trick before. “Hello!” You call out to it.

The boar turns to you, and lowers his head to the ground. It gives no response to your call. Your hand instinctively goes to your sword as you see it run over to you.

“Please don’t be running to greet me.” Flashes through your head as you unsheathe your sword and stab forward.

Your sword runs through the boar’s snout all the way to the hilt. The boar stops dead in its tracks.
You wait a few seconds to make sure that the boar is no longer a threat. Giving it a look, you see that it is indeed quite dead so you brace yourself with your leg and pull out your sword.
A feeling of confliction comes over you. It’s just a boar, it’s just an animal, yet you feel as if you may have killed something more than that, something almost, human.
“Thank you for protecting me.” Cecilia puts a hand on your shoulder as if sensing your doubt.

Her words are strangely soothing, but the doubt still lingers inside of you. The woods themselves are quieter as if they played witness to the first thing that you killed in this world.

You wipe your sword on the boar’s fur. “Let’s go.” You say to Cecilia, eager to leave the corpse behind.

~

“Let me see what you have.” Ryg says as you and Cecilia return.

Out of your pouch, you pull out a slightly spotted bundle of yellow herbs.

“Hmm. Looks like there’s more to them than you give them credit, Vi.” Ryg takes the herbs from your hands and begins to crush them with his paw.
“Even idiots are blessed by luck sometimes.” Vi shrugs.
“Umm…” You start, slightly hesitant to continue in case you’re about to admit you murdered one of their friends. “Back on the path there, we encountered a boar.”
“Yeah, what about him?” Ryg asks as he rubs the crushed herbs into his wound.
“I killed him.” You say quietly.
“You did what!?” Ryg exclaims, eyes going wide.
Your heart rate increases as you wish you hadn’t brought any of that up in the first place.
You gulp. “I ran him through with my sword after he charged at me.”
[1/2]
>>
>>36314199

Ryg stares at you for a few agonizing seconds. “Good! Boars are assholes. Uncivilized, uncaring, and selfish assholes.”Ryg returns to tending his wound.
“So, he wasn’t like you?” you ask tentatively.
Ryg stops. “What? No, didn’t you say he was a boar and not a bear?”

Vi interjects “Boars don’t have the intelligence to fully recognize that they are boars, let alone delineate between boars and bears. So don’t worry, my little fool, you are not a senseless murderer. But you may be a boar.” She giggles.

“Enough talk about the boars and the bears. I believe you have some questions for me” Ryg finishes rubbing the herbs into his wound. “But I suggest you pick carefully and quickly. This herb is quite the potent pain reliever, as time goes on, the more questions you ask, the less accurate my answers will be. I may even fall asleep after long enough, and I sleep for a long time, even without the herbs.”

Vi flies over to you and whispers in your ear. “Be sure to ask him about the warden.”

You start with:

“Yeah, I figured that would be one of your questions.” Ryg continues. “Allow me to first tell you that this world is divided into six pieces. Each piece is highly different. Five pieces are watched over by individual wardens and one core is surrounded by the others pieces, that’s where the sorceress resides. Most of the time, anyway.”

“I’m friends with the warden of this piece, so I’m pretty much privy to everything that he knows” Ryg says proudly. “As to what he is exactly, he one of the treefolk, and as to where…”

Ryg yawns and points behind you “He’s a few days walk to the west of here, you will need to find him before you can leave this piece. But don’t worry too much about that, from what he told me, this forest is the most peaceful piece of the five.”

“How will I get the help of the warden?” You press on quickly seeing the effects clearly on Ryg’s body as his head begins to stoop more and more with each passing minute.

Ryg yawns again. “He’s not just going to help you for no reason. He’s a prideful guy, use that against him. Break his pride or feed it, those are your choices if want to leave this piece.” He pauses for long enough to make you wonder if he fell asleep and then finally say. “Well, all the wardens accept a differnnnnnnt way…..” Ryg begins to nod off.

“You’d have to make a choice…fertilize the garden.” Ryg manages to squeeze out before slumping to the ground, soundly asleep.
All is quiet except the sound of Ryg’s heavy breathing.
“Well, we have our plan.” Vi says, breaking the silence. “We can still make it a ways to the warden before dark.”
“Don’t you have people to say goodbye to?” Cecilia asks.
“Nahh.” Vi pauses. “I already did.”
With that the three of you leave the sleeping bear behind to journey onwards. The sun is low in the sky as it shines through the shadows trees to you, surrounding you a multitude of colors, with red being the most prominent.

>>36316275
Cool, like the fact you run hard quests. Just hate how the last one ended. Hoping we'll do better this time. Was the hiccup attacking the bear?
>>
>>36316328
I like running quests with a bit more difficulty to them too! Indeed, how Miasma Quest ended was terribly sad, I look forward to when we run it again in the future. Yes, that was the hiccup, the quest would be going in a bit of different direction if we hadn't, but I can't divulge any more than that.
>>
>>36316397
Kinda figured that was were we messed up. The more realistic difficulty makes our choices weightier and makes us more attached. That being said if we keep rolling ones like last time, this will not end well.
>>
>>36316477
That's a great way of putting it! That being said, I thought about that and decided that this will be a little less focused on the dice themselves and more on the choices. That being said, I don't think it's going to be any easier. Perhaps it will be a little more difficult?
>>
>>36316604
Fair enough. Just out of curiosity what would have happened if we rolled a 100 on miasmic resistance?
>>
>>36316736
I can't tell you everything, since there people that want to run it again in the future, but a maximum roll on miasma resistance would have piqued a lot of interest from many different people, and there are many things that come from that good and bad.

I'm going to step out of the thread now so thank you for all your comments and questions, I had fun answering them. And once again thank you to all the players! Good-night!
