>Welcome to the China The Never Was

It's like a routine with you.

Every time you spar you think you see a gap in his defense, and every single time you try to exploit it, you are struck, without exception.

The real mystery you suppose is why you keep trying; are you stupid or simply stubborn?

"I can't decide if you're stupid or stubborn," Sifu says as you stagger up to your feet. "I've given you that feint four times in the last week, but you fall for it every single time."
Sifu prounounced "Shifu", meaning "Master" is also your father, though he prefers to be called Sifu during training...and you're always training as far as you can tell.
He is a tall man with long hair totally unkept and uncombed, with a thin beard around his face he keeps cleaner then the rest of himself.
He's Han ethnically as far as you know, but his life before Ten Village Valley is a mystery to you, and he never speaks of it.

You don't even wait for him to finish talking; instead you get up and launch yourself at him like an arrow from a crossbow, fallen Autumn leaves kicking up like a whirlwind has passed through them!

Your qigong Lightfoot Skill, a variety of skills and forms that grant the pugilist in question a body that is almost lighter then air using a specific application of Qi is the ONE thing you're proud about; you can catch deer, outrun the wind, land harmlessly on the thinnest branch and glide across water like a morning mist; the THOUSAND-CLOUD STEP is a the only thing Sifu said you were good at.

Never seems to be enough though

>Strike high! A combination of blows aimed at his upper body and head!
>Sweep low! Feint for his face and use your footwork to go for his legs.

I have a trip, just not using it at the moment.

You cut through the air like a saber through flesh, pulling back a series of punches, moving so quickly the leaves swirl up around you like a hurricane!

Aiming at his face and body, your blows are effortlessly parried by his left hand (and JUST his left), and he sighs.

"Clearly I have offended the Gods to be gifted with such a-"

He stops in mid-sentence as a right hook flies harmlessly past his block and you swoop low, your left leg coming up towards his face followed by a sweeping kick, your body spinning in place like a windmill in the breeze!

He actually has to pull back to avoid the kick to the face and lifts up his left leg briefly to let the sweep pass beneath it, but this time his left eyebrow is raised, especially when you impulsively push up with your arms and go flying into the air, sending more leaves past his face!

In mid-air you spin pulling back a right punch, and then you...

>FOCUS!
>Center Yourself!
>Seperate the Yin and Yang!
>Feel the Force build!
>Direct to The Limb!

And you within a fractional instant run through the Five Steps of Heaven's Blessing's First Form; YIN-YANG ROTATION FORCE.

A sound like thunder tears through the air around you, flashing light and power surge up your arm, shooting pain and heat move through your bones and muscles as the energy of Heaven itself, pure Lightning gathers upon your blow!

>"HEAVEN'S BLESSING! HEAVEN KISSES THE EARTH!"

And the half-second you hang in the air ends as you fall, lightning trailing your blow like a God smithing the earth!

And he blocks it.
Effortlessly if you're being really honest with yourself, and Sifu has spent a great deal of time ensuring that when it comes to martial training you are ALWAYS honest with yourself.

He raises his right arm up to block, catches the blow effortlessly in his palm and your power impacts with a brief flash of light! He does...something with his left leg (it looks like he raises it and stomps the ground?), and you go flying as he tosses you away like a ragdoll and you roll through the ground, smacking up against an oak tree, causing leaves an acorns to fall around you.

He shakes off the leaves on himself, gently shaking his head with closed eyes.
"Hmph. Not bad. You made me block with both hands in the same day for once, and your control over the First Form is improved, but perhaps you shouldn't shout out the form names when I taught you all of the maneuvers and so know every single counter-mo-" he begins, but his eyes blink in surprise as an acorn hits his head.

You're still seated against the oak tree, right arm outstretched after your remarkably accurate toss.

"Hit you."
>>
>>36335051
He stares blankly for a second, then smiles a little, your Father for a brief second instead of Sifu. He's not Ba short for "Baba", basically saying "Dad" very often these days, and it's been so long since he was Father more often then Teacher that the memories involved are cloudy and vague. There's a woman in those memories too, but she isn't here anymore, and Sifu never speaks of them.

"Okay, yeah. You hit me. Want a reward?" he inquires.

"Yes!" you say, pumping your arm down in victory.

"Your reward is....going down to the village and buying some more rice, we ran our yesterday."

"YES....wait, what?"

"You heard me. And remember...."

You sigh and get up, brushing off the leaves. "Yeah yeah, I know, no fighting."

"Good. And hurry up."

You nod and jog off down the mountain.
Jiuzhaigou Nine Village Valley is beautiful this time of year, but you're used to it, having grown up here most of your twenty years of life. Five Flower Lake's shining blue waters hold no majesty for you anymore, though your father always says that "he finds the country peaceful", whatever THAT means.

You're not allowed to get into fights when you fetch supplies from the nearby village, Shuzheng, and Father even warned against you using your Lightfoot Skill when in-town, claiming that "it just attracts attention and you're more then enough trouble as it is".

Sifu NEVER leaves the mountains, always sending you for supplies and other things with money he gives you (a one-hundred coin string this time), and your few friends in the valley often joke that your father is like your imaginary friend, as you're obviously capable of hunting and taking care of yourself anyway.

It actually took you until you were fourteen to realize you'd never heard your father's name; other kids learn their parent's names often from spouses or friends using them in conversation, but you've never seen your father speak or meet with anyone except perhaps that woman who's name you can't remember so very long ago.
>>
This should be a Xiaolin showdown quest.
I thought that was haylin. Would be bitchin.
>>
>>36335674
Shuzheng's colorful buildings, banners, and farms approach and you slow your blurring speed, doing your best to not attract attention to yourself.

Some of the farmers wave to you and you wave back, passing donkeys and wagons. You're not the most common sight around here, but enough people know you live in the area for you to be considered "a local" you suppose, though everyone here is Tibetan or Qiang rather then Han, though none of them seem to mind so much.

It's fairly open knowledge that your father is a martial artist (you were never told to lie about that, and Sifu never seemed to care), who has been training you in isolation in the mountains, and while it seems weird to the villagers, they admit that jianghu literally "rivers and lakes", a slang term meaning the secret world of martial artists matters aren't really their problem anyway.

"Hey, Tiankong!" a voice says behind you as the burly frame of Lobsang,Pronounced LO-sahng. Tibetan not Mandarin., the son of a porter and a porter himself now at 19 years old approaches carrying a huge wicker basket. If you have a best friend in the Valley, Lobsang is him. You blink at the usage of your name; Tiankong, meaning "Sky", is indeed your given name but Sifu nearly never uses it. The last time you can remember him using it is when he ordered you to not fight in town unless there was absolutely nothing else you could do.

"Hi Lobsang," you say absently, but you smile at him.

"How's the wife?" you interrupt before you can say anything else, and he rolls his eyes. You've been on him about this since you found out four months ago, and you admit it's an endless source of personal amusement for you.

What can you say; entertainment's a rarefied commodity when you live in a hut in the mountains with your hermit father.

"STILL haven't met her yet...," he admits, and you can't help but start laughing at that.
"Shut UP dude! It's not my fault my parents matched me with her when I was like seven years old or something! I haven't met her because she lives at Zhengzha at the bottom of the valley and I live up here in Shuzhang, and my family doesn't make enough money to allow me to stop and take a break from work!" he says sternly, puffing up his muscular chest. He's actually taller and physically burlier then you are, though you can feel he has no Nèijìng literally "Internal strength", a term for a developed body of Qi in your system created by practicing special exercises so if you tried to be you could probably lift more then him if you wanted to.

"And you're afraid she'll be ugly."

"Oh gods YES. What if she's a cow? What if she's this really pushy and annoying? What if she has gnarled teeth and I'm meeting her for dinner tonight with her family!" he says, admitting the truth.

"Relax, at least you HAVE prospects. I'm a hobo in the woods with a hobo father working on my hobo-fu all day every day, except when I go to fetch rice or paper for writing," you say, smacking him hard on the back in reassurance.

"Wait, you can read and write?" Lobsang asks, surprised.

"Hmm? Yeah. Hey what's going on over there in the main square?" you ask, nodding at the commotion you hear.

"Some wealthy guy from out of town came up. He's fighting in the arena, beating up on local pugilists in public. Hasn't lost yet."

"Mm," you say, heading over slowly in curiosity. "Is he any good?" you ask

"Well...," Lobsang begins to say, and your question is answered when you see someone go flying out of the arena and landing on the square three feet away from you.

In the town square there is a raised circular stone dais about six inches high and twenty feet wide. At the center stands a well-dressed man in finer clothes then you've ever seen in your life, with his long hair tied up away from his face, his right hand out in a claw-like motion with his left behind his back. He's not much older then you, if he's older at all.

"Tch! Next!" he says arrogantly, which makes you frown. You're not exactly familiar with Wulin etiquette yourself, but you're pretty sure that's a pretty damn rude way to act in ANY situation.

"Is he ALWAYS like that?" you ask Lobsang as a new challenger steps onto the platform, loudly proclaiming his school and style.

"Yeah, ever since he got here. The guy's a real asshole. Is your father like that when he fights?" your friend asks, as you note the foreign fighter doesn't even bother proclaiming his name, just takes up a stance.

"Hm?" you say, not taking your eyes off the fight. "I dunno."

"What do you mean you don't know?"

"Never seen him fight anyone. Hold on, I'm trying to wa-" you say, but then there's an explosion of movement!

The local fighter moves forward and swings an easily blocked fist and then there's a flurry of movement from the new guy, striking with only three of his fingers bent like claws! The movements are a shadow, so deceptive and swift that you can hardly see what was even done to the other, only that it left him screaming in agony before a blunt, no-frills palm strike sends him sailing back out of the arena.
>>
>>36337296
The pugilist makes another "tch!" sound again and shakes his head.

"Ugh! Is this ENTIRE town filled with country hicks who can't even throw a proper blow?! What am I even DOING here if this is all a waste of time?!" he shouts loudly enough for the crowd to hear. "I came here looking for someone and since I can't find them, I might as well experience the martial skills of this land. CLEARLY I had my expectations set too high!"

Behind him on the opposite side of the arena are a group of five more Han men in similar garb looking around nervously. They seem uncomfortable with the man being the center of attention, but do nothing to stop him either.

"Can ANYONE here provide me with...," he stops...and then looks at you. As in, RIGHT at you, and you realize you might have been emitting hostile intent without even realizing it.

Oops.

"Something to say?" he says, more quietly, obviously directed at you, and the WHOLE crowd moves back from you, except for Lobsang, who tugs on you in an urgent "come on, let's go" motion.

You say nothing in response to the man at first.
"No, Gentle Sir," you say in perfect Mandarin, without a trace of accent like most of the locals have. "I was just admiring your skills. Excuse me," you say, turning and walking away without another word or a bow.

"So who's your Master, hick? I can feel your Nèijìng from here, and yet you aren't fighting?" he asks, rudely, raising his voice. One of his allies....or whatever they are speaks up.

"Young Lord, we should really....,"

"Shut up. This guy actually feels like he might be worth fighting," he interrupts without taking his eyes off your back.

You still say nothing.

"Just as well. Probably yet another no-name hick school and sifu who isn't worth my time," he says, loudly enough for EVERYONE to hear this time, which makes you stop briefly and your shoulders tense.

He just insulted your school (so what if it's just you and sifu), your Master, AND your father all in once sentence.

Basically a kind of parallel world in Chinese fiction. It is the world of heroes and villains; of emotion and honour and action, as opposed to the rigid, orderly, mundane structures of everyday life.

The two worlds occasionally touch and even effect one another, but by and large, they are two separate communities within the nation. Sadly, in the modern day, this has taken on the connotation of the criminal underbelly and regular society.

Lobsang whistles as you both leave the square. "I've never seen you look like that in your life, Sky! I thought you were going to actually FIGHT him for a second there!"

"Trust me, I THOUGHT about it. But I promised Sifu I'd never fight unless to save my life. Which is good I guess because that promise saved HIS," you growl.

"You actually sound like you think you could've beaten him....." Lobsang says, clearly not as sure as you are.

"Maybe. He's definitely tricky and I can't say I've seen his style or anything like it before, but I sure as the Ten Hells know HE hasn't seen MINE either," you admit, shrugging.

"Sky.....why learn martial arts if you're not ever supposed to use martial arts?" your best friend asks, and for once you have no actual answer.

Your father is a hermit with no relation to the Wulin, and he teaches you no spiritual systems or faiths like Daoists or Buddhists do. He just teaches you his style then commands you never use it. It's never made any sense to you.

The inn is busy enough for once, with travelers everywhere going on about troubles back in Sichuan and the Empire in general. Something about pirates.
Honestly you've always had a hard time caring about stuff like that; your father oft mentioned the old Jianghu axiom of "The Rivers should not muddy the Well". Meaning that Jianghu and Wulin affairs should be settled solely within the Jianghu and Wulin, rather then involving the secular world. How often this tradition is actually followed varies widely by individual, clan, and even era in question.

The innkeeper nods at Lobsang, but not you; you don't come here often enough to know him.

"Lobsang, you should leave before...," he says, and then your best friend sees what was concerning the innkeeper; five men dressed akin to the prick back in the square harassing a group of young women.

The first thing that pops into your mind is that the woman wearing red bridal colors actually IS pretty good-looking; hardly gorgeous, but definitely one of the nicer girls you've seen.
The second is that The Buddah is obviously testing how well you can keep a promise as the five goons continuously harass the young lady and her ladies in waiting and seem totally unconcerned with how they're acting in public.

You sigh as Lobsang begins to speak.
"Come on! I'm not going to let those assholes-"
"Hold these," you interrupt, handing him the rice bags, which weight him down as he reflexively grabs them and prevents him from getting into trouble as a side bonus.

"Hey...wait, what are you doing?"

"Breaking promises I guess," you admit with another sigh, and walk over to the gang.

"Seriously, a beauty like you is getting married? It's a mistake to get married without experiencing HRSSHFF!" he says, ending his sentence with an unintelligible noise as you replace the words in his mouth with your fist.

You feel teeth give way and something else in his mouth crack as he falls to the ground like a bolt of lightning struck him!

The other four, so engrossed in tormenting the women weren't even paying attention to you before you struck the first blow.

"H...HEY! What the fuck?! Who the fuck are-" one begins but without even bothering to answer you strike out and smash your elbow into his stomach, sending him to the ground with a sad little wheeze of what is probably an attempt at an agonized cry.

"Who the hell are you, you jackass!? Do you even know who we are!?" a final one says, as they finally take up some kind of stance.

"No," you say flatly. "And I don't care either. I'm guessing you don't know the Young Miss's name here," you point out, before blinking and before turning towards her briefly, as she and her bridesmaids are still obviously in shock.

"Oh, sorry. I'm Sky, Lobsang's friend. That's him over there, you should probably go say hi," you say to her, as politely as you can.

Etiquette was never exactly on the Heaven's Blessing's Style's teaching curriculum, so sue you.

One of the cronies charges you, with halfway decent form. Unfortunately for him halfway decent is not the same thing as ACTUALLY decent, and thus you block his relatively clumsy and inaccurate blows and return with a palm strike of your own on his chest, knocking him back!

Without pausing you leap over the table like a leaf carried on the wind and kick twice with the same leg in mid-air, smacking both of their heads they go flying in opposite directions and land hard enough to shake the tables near them!

Instantly they've had enough, and they carry each other out of the inn, knowing when to cut and run!

"Holy shit! You never told me you could fight like that!" Lobsang says as you casually walk back up to him and pick up the rice bags.

"Sure I did. I just never SHOWED you I could fight like that. Come on. Sorry for the damages," you say to the innkeeper, leaving him another thirty coins.

"Uuuh...there's no damag-" he begins, but you've already left with your rice, best friend and his new fiancee.

As you leave, everything seems to happen in slow-motion....or maybe it just felt that way.

Years later, you'll wonder if perhaps something only slightly different happened, like if you'd hit the first one a little bit harder when you originally decided to intervene or maybe had just headed home earlier everything that happened afterword would be completely different.

The first crony you downed stands with the others, who seem to urge him not to throw the small throwing blade in his hands, but he ignores them.

The blade is small, but when propelled at a proper weak point, it would be lethal. It's aimed at Lobsang, or just perhaps his fiancee, who was introducing herself to you as you walked out.

Seeing the knife, you took action...maybe the right one, maybe the wrong one, but it IS the action you took.

You dropped the bags, everything still in slow-motion to you as they fell to the ground by centimeters and the thug's arm began to slowly make the motions of throwing.

Your turned and you

>FOCUSED
>Centered Yourself!
>Separate the Yin and Yang!
>Feel the Force build!
>Direct to The Legs!

And though you'd practiced it before, you'd never actually performed it successfully in the heat of the moment...and in fact you'd only ever successfully pulled it off in practice just one.

Feeling the heat build in your legs you kick off, and a flash erupts behind you as you leave a shining cobalt afterimage of electric force, erasing the twenty feet of distance between the thug and you like a bolt of lightning taking the shortest possible distance between two points.

>HEAVEN'S BLESSINGS SECOND FORM:
TRAVERSING THE INSTANT PATH!

His arm is halfway through the throwing motion when you simply ARRIVE in front of him, leaving afterimages so bright they burn the eyes looking straight at them and a sound of distant thunder erupts behind you....and your right elbow, right fist in your left palm supporting the strike impacts directly into his sternum.

There is a sound you've heard before, but never from a human being; a crunching sound of breaking bone and ruptured organs, and blood comes up from his mouth as he falls like a tree felled by lightning, dead as a stone.

The other four's eyes are wide with fear as the thunder sound echoes slightly as you hold the position, your eyes hard and without mercy.

The other four just stand (or stagger back in terror), jaws agape.
You hear the sound of your dropped rice bags behind you, and turn and walk away, picking them back up and nodding for your friends to follow you.

You remember your Sifu's teachings;
>"When you must strike, do so like lightning. Swift, with no mercy, but hitting only what you have aimed for. The way of the jianghu is not for those of weak heart and will; men DIE for their ideals and goals in this world, so be certain you aren't the one doing the dying."

Father is a decent man. He seems to not wish harm upon anyone, and expects much of your skills, and seems quite proud when you improve.

Sifu however, is a hard one, and he seems nearly without mercy in his teachings. He's no violent killer, but like lightning from Heaven he teaches no pity or remorse, only certainty of intent and resolve.

The rest of your time with Lobsang and his fiancee (Dawa, you find out her name is) is quiet, as both are somewhere between shocked, appalled, and grateful for what you did, along with a decent helping of terror as your displayed might.

You leave them and head back up the mountain with your rice, the weight of the bags a burdon you scarcely notice after doing this sort of thing so many times.
>>
>>36340938
You arrive back up at the hut, dropping the bags heavily with a loud THUMP.

"Sifu, I've brought," you say, as you see him turned from you...and you realize why he wasn't inside.

Away from him by several feet is a large bear, furious and foaming at the mouth, eyes bloodshot with madness. Sifu's shirt is removed, revealed muscles so powerfully corded and strong that he looks to you to be made of solid steel rather then flesh and bone.

The bear gives a maddened howl and charges your teacher, who stands unmoving between you and the rabid beast, before suddenly bringing up his palm in a single strike, electrical power dancing between his fingers and STOPPING all nine hundred pounds of rampaging charging bear with a single-armed blow, deafening thunder ringing and bright light flashing but for a brief second as the huge beast's howls silence instantly and it's fur smoulders like it's been in a fire.

It smells like ozone here now, acrid and bitter.

Suddenly Sifu is gone and Ba leans down over the fallen creature. "Poor thing. Some damn hunter elsewhere poisoned his arrows. It drove him mad from agony but didn't kill him. Nothing else to be done but to put him out of his misery before he hurt anyone or anything else," he says to you, sounding regretful.

"Get the rice?" he asks, and you jump a little bit as he turns towards you.

He only used the first form of Heaven's Blessings, but his raw power was so much greater then yours....

"Yea," you say.

"Did you fight?" he asks, getting off his knee and turning away walking towards the cabin you share.d

"Yes," you answer truthfully, and the shame you were pushing away earlier hits you. It's the first time you've ever actually broken a promise, even if you've made very few of them to anyone in your two decades of life.

Ba doesn't get angry.
He doesn't even seem a little bit mad, or even particularly surprised. You hear him sigh, a sound very much like you made just before you got involved back at the inn...pretty much the EXACT same sound actually.

"Did you win, at least?" he asks, which completely surprises you.

"Uuuh....what?

"You heard me."

"Uh....yes?"

He sighs again. "Well, that's something at least."

"Sifu...Ba, I only did it beca-"

"Save it. I know you. You're my student," he says, his voice full of something you've not heard in....a very long time; complete understanding and sympathy.

"You're my son," he finishes as he heads inside. "Now hurry and help me with this, we need to make dinner."

"Why? What's for dinner?"

"Bear and rice."

Even though I was late to this quest and didn't get to contribute I love Wuxia stories and will wait with anticipation for the next thread.

>>36341562
Makes me wonder what MC's dad did, before MC was born.

One big thing with Wuxia is that stories have no clear beginning or ending. Our dad has a past, as all martial artists do, and we're going to have to face the consequences of it.

Should be interesting.
>>
>>36341772
I hope I can keep this one going for awhile; the story I've put together is somewhat....extensive, I admit. Maybe a bit too much honestly.
I had to pick from one of five potential main character ideas just for starters, all of whom will STILL exist in this storyline.
>>36341790
Once a friend who I was watching Legend of Condor Heroes with asked why that was, and I told him the basic explanation is cultural in nature.

In Chinese culture your parents and family heavily determine who you are and are expected to become and be later in life.
A protagonist without parents or without any knowledge of them is considered extremely shallow because without parents there's no "context" so to speak in Chinese culture for who they are and are supposed to be or are rebelling against, so thus the MC's parents backstories must be extremely heavily detailed (there's many wuxia that go on for chapter after chapter without the real main character even being BORN yet).

Suffice to say, Sky's father has a similarly convoluted and complex past.

>>36341894
Looking forward to being able to participate in future threads. You've got the Wuxia ascetic flowing pretty good so I'm excited to see things progress and unfold. Liking the lightning motif as well.

Another goal I wanted to do with this was to Harry Potter this shit up.

Basically the idea is this; you understand how everything in Harry Potter works because you are introduced to it by a bit by bit basis in the novels. You don't get Apparating, Dementors, Patronuses, Snake-speak, Death-eaters, and Horcruxes all at once in the first book. You instead are introduced to every single basic concept one at a time so when all of it comes into play it's not an overwhelming mess.

Part of the reason (aside from cultural value differences) Wuxia is such a difficult genre to approach for many is because most wuxia stories begin assuming that you ALREADY have an understanding of the basic concepts of wuxia.

Think of it like this; why do they ride brooms in Harry Potter? Because witches are supposed to ride brooms. But why DO they? Well, there actually ISN'T a reason, they do it because that's always how it worked in stories we've heard since we were little kids, and wuxia operates under a similar assumption, that qi and qigong and neijia won't need an explanation as to how all that shit works.

Sky on the other had is only immediately familiar with the basics of his world, and thus makes an excellent introduction into the rules and tropes of wuxia stories so that the information isn't overwhelming all at once.

I'm partially formatting this quest to help explain wuxia by telling a good story about it and get people who don't understand it very well into the idea, much as Harry Potter stories gradually introduce their world to the reader.

In short, not so much, no.
Going for more of a VN feel here, since it lets me focus more actively on story. Keeping track of what skills and techniques you learn and practice on the other hand is something that eventually will need to start happening, since that kind of thing ends of being relevant even in wuxia novels where narrative stuff takes maximum priority.

I'd recommend at least a basic system, so the players know what they're getting into. Just what the styles we know are good at and what they're bad against, as well as our mastery level, would do. Like...

>Black Turtle Style
Adept
>Laughs At
Highly aggressive and energetic styles exhaust themselves rapidly on the turtle's iron shell and leave themselves vulnerable.
>Fears
Cunning styles can spot the weak points in the Black Turtle's defense and strike at them, making the slow-moving turtle easy prey for pinpoint attacks. Long-ranged styles also excel in staying beyond the turtle's limited reach.
